    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom humble beginning as a 1970s motoring show, Top Gear has achieved world domination. Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series faced the axe in 2001 - but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irrevernt, funny and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments ove the Cool Wall and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig. Recent series have been defined by their madcap challenges - with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1000-mile journey across the Africa in cars bought for only GBP1500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole, have cemented Top Gear's reputation as much more than just a motoring show. But the show's most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300mph.

  • Dodge Challenger & Plymouth Barracuda: Chrysler's

David & Charles Dodge Challenger & Plymouth Barracuda: Chrysler's

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe ultimate Chrysler pony car book written in Peter's now familiar and welcome unpretentious style, featuring every series and model of pony car made by the Chrysler Corporation in the 1960s and 70s, including the slippery Barracuda and classic Dodge Challenger, along with stars of the big screen and drag strip.Trade ReviewThere's a continuing mystique surrounding Chrysler's sibling muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda, reflected in their sometimes astronomic prices on the classic car market. What is it about Morpars pony cars that commands such enduring loyalty to the marque? You can find out in Peter Grist's comprehensive history of the development of the two cars, recently reprinted in paperback form. Its 192 pages are full of photos, many from Chryslers archives and contemporary advertising. Grist has clearly done his homework, interviewing many of the people who worked on the designs of the cars. As with most of the great muscle cars, success did not come overnight. The Barracuda concept started in the late fifties ad the compact Plymouth Valiant, a direct competitor to Fords Falcon, Chervolets Corsair and AMCs Rambler. Dodges Challenger was a latecomer, as by the late sixties they needed something bigger than their compact Dart, yet smaller that the Charger. The resulting rivalry between the Plymouth and Dodge styling houses, racing to produce a sales-beaitng body on the E-Body chassis, is quite a story. Despite the increasing Establishment resistance to muscle cars, their efforts bore fruit with the stunning 1970 Challenger and Cuda, designs destined for immortality. This should be essential reading for all Mopar muscle fans. – Classic American.Table of ContentsChapter 1 - Valiant beginningCovers the development of the Barracuda from its Plymouth Valiant donor.Chapter 2 - The slippery fish 1964-66The first incarnation of the Barracuda that beat the Ford Mustang to the dealerships by a clear two weeks.Chapter 3 - Second generation 1967-69Shows the revamp and relaunch of an all-new Barracuda to take on the likes of the Camaro, Cougar and Mustang.Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Pony Cars 1970- 74Introduction of the Dodge Challenger and third incarnation of the Barracuda.Chapter 5 - (OPTIONAL) A chapter covering the latest 2008 Dodge Challenger.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe incredibly popular sixties design classics, with their enduring appeal, the original air-cooled Volkswagen cars and Transporters are fully explored in this fascinating book. A unique picture-led chronicle of the Volkswagen story through the 1950s and '60s, this book makes extensive use of the artwork from contemporary promotional literature for a real 'retro' feel. A must have for motoring enthusiasts and VW devotees alike.Trade ReviewThis coffee-table companion describes the incredibly popular `Sixties design of VW classics, exploring their enduring appeal, the original air-cooled cars and the Transporter models in fascinating detail. It's an absolute must-read for Volkswagen enthusiasts.- Classic Car Buyer. VW owners are hardly wanting for relevant books, but Volkswagen: The Air-Cooled Era in Colour focuses on the marketing and production of postwar to 1970 VWs in a light, easily accessed way with very little tedious data. Pretty 1940s and 50s stylised artwork gives way to the brutal honesty of the 1960s, and there is a pleasing amount of Type 3 and Razor Edge coverage included. Great for the newcomer to the work of Beetles and buses.- Classic Car Weekly. Veloce Publishing has newly reprinted this 176-page softcover, which has been one of its most popular classic-VW books for good reason. Copping begins with a history lesson that acknowledges the Volkswagen's Nazi roots, and continues the lessons through six chapters that are generously illustrated with 255 mostly colour images. Readers follow along as the beautiful drawings of the early 1950s gave way to photographs in the early 1960s, and the vehicles likewise evolved to appeal to changing tastes and regulations. This book even includes such rare vehicles as the Type 3-based 1500 "razor" Karmann Ghia and stillborn 1500 Convertible. In addition to its visual appeal, this book is filled with interesting VW trivia; it's an excellent piece for any imported-car fan's bookshelf. – Hemmings Motor News.

  • VW Bus - 40 Years of Splitties, Bays & Wedges

David & Charles VW Bus - 40 Years of Splitties, Bays & Wedges

Book SynopsisVisit any VW show and what do you find? Correct - wall-to-wall Campers. Interest in the numerous conversions offered over the years spirals ever-upwards as do asking prices for even the most dilapidated examples of the first three generations and 40-years of VW Bus conversions. But are there books to match? No - not, that is, until VW Bus - 40 years of Splitties, Bays & Wedges was conceived. As a direct consequence of the lack of print available, author Richard Copping has collected a wealth of contemporary brochures from all the leading converters, knitted them together and produced a unique and vibrant story of the VW Camper from the first and often rustic conversions of the 1950s to the sophisticated homes on wheels of the late 1980s.Stripping out the original text, Richard has carefully replaced it with his own lively yet informative story - while carefully retaining both the popular look and nostalgic feel of the age. From the untangling of the many stories that contributed to VW Camper history to a restorer's dream of detailed specifications and from the quirkiest of marketing strategies amazingly and endearingly primitive in the 1950s to suavely sophisticated in the latter days, if the word Camper is in it, it's covered. The meticulous reproduction of advertising brochures, many of which can easily be the best part of 50-years old, make this a hard to put down coffee table volume for some - a book with very much in vogue nostalgic visual appeal. For others, the lure of a lively and informative story peppered with carefully detailed pictures will ensure the book is a useful reference to visit over and over again. This extensive collection of rarely seen advertising material provides a unique background to a much-needed book, designed to delight the multitude of VW Camper fans far and wide.Trade ReviewCapturing the marketing and evolution of one of the most revolutionary vehicles to spin off from the original Beetle, VW Bus- Forty Years of Splitters, Bays and Wedges devotes an immense amount of space to the original VW Transporter and the marketing challenge it presented. The brochures collated within show a reactive approach as the market matured. The later Wedge/Vanagon models are relatively quickly covered, though the Synchro and diesel get a look in before a swift gathering of campers. younger bus enthusiasts will love the variety of colourful brochures and marketing shots.- Classic Car Weekly.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book details the origin and history of the Mirage sports cars, designed by the British-based John Wyer Automotive firm to contest the various versions of the World Sports Car Championship between 1967 and 1975, funded by the Gulf Oil Corporation. The cars began as developments of the Ford GT40, but they soon assumed their own identity. After 1975, the Mirage was no longer in John Wyer hands, but the name lived on, and the marque remained a significant player in the World Championship for some years. This book includes the developmental and race history, with a full list of all events and individual chassis numbers.Trade ReviewOriginally released in 2012, this book has been reprinted under the Veloce Classic Reprint series. It details the creation of the first Mirage sport car, a development of the Ford GT40 that founder John Wyer had previously run successfully, through to the development of new chassis design to meet the new regulations in successive seasons, all with the branding and financial support of the Gulf Oil company. That association came to an end at the end of the 1975 season, the cars then being bought up by Harley Claxton and raced with various modifications at Le Mans annually through to 1982 when the marque was ended. It covers detailed car records and specifications of each chassis design, and a complete results list of all the races attended over this period. The author includes personal stories and recollections to colour some parts of the story, as well as conversations with drivers and personnel connected with the project. The book will appeal to the motorsport enthusiast and budding historian looking to fill in the details behind the headlines when looking back in the history of Le Mans and sportscar racing in the Group 4/5/6 years. - Chequered Flag Services. In the book series World Sports Cars a reprint of the fabulous Gulf-Mirage prototypes has appeared on the circuits from 1967-1982. David & Charles Custom Air Suspension: How to install air

Book SynopsisA step-by-step guide to DIY air suspension for your road car. Manufacturers like Mercedes, Tesla, Audi and Cadillac choose air suspension because they can achieve the highest quality in ride and handling, but until now, there hasn't been a book that shows you how to get the best from aftermarket air suspension for your road car. This book covers both theory and practice - from the technical advantages of air suspension through to detailed coverage of the development, installation and tuning of a custom air suspension system. It looks at wiring and plumbing, covers a brilliant new low cost electronic air suspension controller, and even shows how to source low-cost components from cars originally sold with air suspension. Want to buy an air suspension kit off the shelf? That's covered as well, with the six key questions to ask before buying. Whether you're after the best ride and handling, or simply like being able to raise or lower your car at the turn of a knob, this book will show you how to do it.Trade ReviewThis is the first book that shows you how to fit air suspension to your car. It covers both theory and practice, and includes the step by step fitting of a custom air suspension system. If you want the best ride and handling for your road car, this is a must-read book. Want to buy an air suspension kit off the shelf? That is covered as well, with the six key questions to ask before buying. - CarSport. If you have a car with air suspension that needs refurbishing or you fancy installing it, then this new book by Julian Edgar, published by Veloce, will guide you through the complete process in an easy-to-follow step-by-step format. The book covers both theory and practice discussing the technological advantages of riding on air through to its development and place in history. Edgar guides you through tuning, plumbing and costs of a system. Off-the-shelf kits are also covered, covering the major points you need to consider such as whether you just want to improve the quality of your ride, have the ability to raise and lower your car on demand or anything else, this book will help. - tkc. Julian Edgar points out in this book, another in Veloce's popular 'SpeedPro' series, air, as opposed to coil springing, is a suspension medium used by current top-end manufacturer such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Rolls-Royce and many others and has many advantages. They include easy maintenance of ride height irrespective of load, rising rate suspension that remains liberal over most if its travel, plus the ability to change both ride height and spring rate with cockpit control. An explanation of how the basic systems work and their variations is followed by a full description of the hardware, both mechanical and electronic, involved, enabling the reader (provided he has the requisite engineering ability) to carry out such work, even by using salvaged air suspension components which are apparently obtainable quite cheaply and often suitable for re-use. The Australian author has written 18 previous books covering a range of automotive DIY topics and is a hands-on modifier who performs all work on his car himself in an extensively equipped home workshop. He ends the book with a full description of how he successfully converted his own Honda Insight to air suspension. While this may not be a task that will be seriously contemplated by the average home mechanic, the author assures the reader that it's entirely possible and for anyone wishing to take the plunge, this book gives a good grounding in theory and practice of converting a car to air suspension. - Speedscene. The author seems to understand what is required; he pitches it well, assuming a degree of understanding on the part of the reader, without assuming that we all have a Masters in pneumatics and fluid dynamics from Oxford. It's a good, informative read, well illustrated and with some simple diagrams and some less-than-simple graphs. If you have a clue already, this title will help you along nicely. – Street Machine.Table of Contents* About the author * Introduction * Further reading * Chapter 1 - Benefits of air Suspension * Chapter 2 - Air spring designs * Chapter 3 - Air suspension systems * Chapter 4 - Selecting air springs * Chapter 5 - Using salvaged air suspension components * Chapter 6 - Wiring air suspension systems * Chapter 7 - The eLabtronics Air Suspension Controller * Chapter 8 - Air suspension natural frequencies * Chapter 9 - Tuning air suspension * Chapter 10 - Fitting a car with custom air suspension * Chapter 11 - Air suspension hints and tips * Chapter 12 - Selecting an air suspension kit * Index

  • An Austin Anthology II

David & Charles An Austin Anthology II

Book SynopsisFollowing on from Jim Stringer's first book `An Austin Anthology,' this second volume features 20 more stories relating to the Austin Motor Company, its products and the people who purchased them. The author takes a look at the very first Austin to be built, and discovers why it was able to be offered to the public so quickly after the Company's formation only a few month's earlier. He also uncovers how the single-cylinder Austin Seven, whilst designed at Longbridge, was actually built at the Swift Motor Car factory in Coventry, and offered as a Swift or an Austin. In 1908 Herbert Austin produced four 100hp racing cars to compete at the French Grand Prix in Dieppe. But what happened to them afterwards? And is the only survivor, now on display at the British Heritage Museum, Gaydon as genuine as it would appear? And then there is the story of Daisy Fearon, whose only means of transport was a 1928 Austin which she'd owned since 1931. As Daisy aged, her driving became less and less predictable, causing those who knew her to run for cover when she was seen at the wheel. To fully understand and enjoy this car it should be appreciated on many different levels: a racing car for the road, and a road car that can excel on the track; its unique composition and aerodynamic qualities; its design and aesthetics. The X-BOW was brought to life by the virtually unlimited resources of an industrial giant steeped in motorsport, which demanded that it be technologically cutting-edge. It is an objet d'art that can race in anger, or can transport in style. It startles, it fascinates, it wins. As Mr Toad (of The Wind in the Willows fame) would undoubtedly have said, it is "A most unusual car!" - we are lucky that this most unusual car, the KTM X-BOW, exists in our lifetime. This book details the design and development, the build process, racing history, and what it's like to live with and maintain a X-BOW, written by joint owners and enthusiasts, with the full cooperation of the car's designers and developers.Trade ReviewThe test in this book is fairly technical, so might be heavy going for some readers. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisBefore yesterday's dream car became today's SUV, the reputation of Porsche as a manufacturer of fine sports cars was established. It started with the ideas of Dr Ferdinand Porsche, and a world best seller that spawned a revered line of sports cars. The Porsche 356 and 911 dominated their classes in international racing, leading to more specialized designs that brought glory to the marque, most famously at Le Mans. Porsche's success was based on excellent engineering. The firm's design consultancy has brought automotive innovation. Such excellence has been centered upon Weissach, the go to place for companies needing a high tech helping hand. Commercial achievement is based on image too. Here, Porsche has carefully chosen its models, and the way they have been sold and promoted. The result, is a unique position in public perception and media coverage. Even during the golden air-cooled era, Porsche wasn't afraid to experiment. The Square Porsche and front-engined coupes, all courted controversy. However, Zuffenhausen believed a Porsche was a Porsche, and soon others did too. The company's tremendous influence in design and engineering has even inspired artistic creation. Like the cars, they represent an inseparable combination of style and substance.Trade ReviewAn ideal book for readers who like to browse Porsche's past. www.autotaal.be --- Highly recommended. • Racing Camaros: An International Photographic

David & Charles Racing Camaros: An International Photographic

Book SynopsisChevrolet created the Camaro in response to the runaway sales success of the Ford Mustang, the first pony car. The Mustang went on sale in April 1964, and by August that same year, General Motors launched an intensive program to bring its own pony car to market. In September 1966, the Camaro went on sale. Chevrolet wanted the Camaro to be better than the Mustang in every area, including style, ride-quality, and performance. To that end, with the Mustang having already achieved so much racing success, Chevrolet wanted to beat it on the track also. Racing Camaros: An International Photographic History 1966 - 1986 is a photographic celebration of road racing Camaros throughout the world. It focuses on production-based cars, rather than the heavily modified tube-frame silhouette machines that began appearing in the late 1970s. Included are images of big-budget factory-supported cars competing in the Trans-Am series, right through to low-buck independents, and cars competing throughout the world. For the first time, the international road racing representation of the Camaro is featured in a book, which includes countless photos that have never been published. Technical detail is provided throughout, from concept and design, right through its racing career, and the challenges and developments that took place to make it a winner. Only period images have been used. This is a true photographic history depicting the global popularity of the Chevrolet Camaro as a road racing car.Trade Reviewit's a highly detailed deep-dive into this classic racer's evolution. Photography is often candid and previously unseen rather than slick and corporate, emphasising the sense of a privileged inside glimpse. - Classic Cars --- Fans of big, brash American saloons in a typically colourful racing environment featuring both big budget organisations and low-buck independents will enjoy this one. - Speedscene --- Good book. - www.silhouet.com --- showcases excellent quality images from a wide range of contributors, and really captures the essence of why so many of us still have such a love affair with that short-lived series all these years later. - Classic & Sports Car --- Indispensable reading for fans of the Camaro, as well as for US car maniacs and fans of sophisticated motorsport. - autobuch.guru --- Yet another winning book from Steve, and one that all fans of the Chevrolet Camaro will want to add to their collection. - Classic Driver --- It's well written and a different take on American racing, which so often concentrates on drag racing. Recommended! - Classic American --- There are some lovely period photographs with technical data on the cars to back it up. A proper photographic history that pays homage to the Camaro as a true road racer. - tkc (Totalkitcar) --- this photographic celebration of the Camaro brings to life a fabulous period of production-based racing with a serious V8 flavour ...
