David & Charles Cranswick on Ford Maverick and Mercury Comet
Book SynopsisThe Ford Maverick was a horse of a different color - four different colors, in fact. It was America's first modern subcompact; as 'The Simple Machine' it combined rugged Ford durability with looks that belied its bargain basement starter sticker. Secondly, the Maverick was an attainable junior supercar. When ponies got pricey, the Maverick Grabber stepped in to fight inflation. And if the Mustang had the Cougar as an upscale cousin, the Grabber could have the Comet GT as its partner in crime. Indeed, it was in the third area of small car luxury, that Maverick LDO (Luxury Decor Option), and Mercury Comet with Custom Option, were truly innovative. Ford was the first domestic to break the previously accepted tenet that luxury went with size. Still, all plush and no sport makes Henry a dull lad. In Super Stock and Pro Stock, the Ford Maverick was raced by Dyno Don Nicholson, Fast Eddie Schartman and Gapp & Roush to victory! Overall, the Ford Maverick was a winner on the track, and in the showroom. Thanks a couple of million Henry! Marc Cranswick's homage to the small US Fords of the 1970s is essential reading for all Maverick and Comet enthusiasts.Trade Reviewa good read - Auto Express --- Overall, a highly comprehensive and focussed look at a couple of very successful Ford U.S.A. products. Definitely recommended. - Model A Ford Club of GB Newsletter --- a good book for those enthusiasts interested in the 'malaise era' of the American automotive industry as well as fans of this niche model. - Classic Car Weekly --- Lavishly illustrated - which is vital when dealing with a model with which we may not be familiar - the story of the Maverick is also the story of the US manufacturers' attempt to fight back against the growing import invasion from Europe and Japan - Classics Monthly --- Marc Cranswick's take on the 1970-'77 Maverick and Comet shines a light in a topic rarely covered in print. - Classic & Sports Car --- Well-illustrated and very readable, this 160 page hardback is an interesting read. David & Charles Preston Tucker and Others: Tales of Brilliant
Book SynopsisCan you imagine a world where people drive beautiful and unusual cars, created by designers prodigiously endowed with talent and imagination? Names like Preston Tucker, Carl Borgward and John DeLorean are hardly known today. Nevertheless, today's cars would be a lot different without their contributions to automotive engineering. Although the car is a technological and rational affair, it's the dreamers and eccentrics like these who have made the biggest contribution to the development of the industry; those who have had the ability to think beyond their time and conventions. Money doesn't drive progress in the car business - it is a passion for speed, and an obsession with mechanisms. Yet for many a dreamer, this passion has ended in fiasco. Misunderstood and pushed aside by their contemporaries, they have been forced to watch their dreams trampled underfoot. This book takes a look at the history of the car from a different angle, avoiding the mainstream moguls and telling a story about a man and his dream, and the like-minded people that came before and after him. Lavishly illustrated and intensively researched, it documents the making of some of the strangest and greatest cars of the past century. The main section is devoted to the unsung heroes of motoring, and the rest of the book shines a light on the many ingenious inventions we now take for granted. Let's show some respect to the dreamers. Our world wouldn't be so exciting without them.Trade Review"Packs plenty to fascinate anoraks of obscure cars and their masterminds." - Classic & Sports Car "Well worth a read." - Octane "This is a fascinating book - an excellent selection of pictures bears testimony to the far side of car design." - Classic Cars "Innovation and engineers go hand in hand, and this book celebrate automotive trail blazers such as Preston Tucker and Guy Negre. There's a lot in here, which proves how ahead of their time many of these automotive geniuses really were." - Practical Classics "Preston Tucker & Others is highly recommended for any auto buff interested in automotive innovators. It celebrates the pioneering innovators of automotive designs who took radical approaches to design, and offers a history lavishly illustrated, well researched and packed with color photos. A top pick for any collection strong in auto innovations and history!" - Bookwatch "A great look at the more unusual elements of automotive history." - Daily Express We at Car Articles can thoroughly recommend Preston Tucker & Others - Tales of brilliant automotive innovators & innovations. It offers a rather unique insight into automotive history without being overly dense and difficult to read. As the book states on page 5 in the Introduction - "Let's show some respect to the dreamers. Our world wouldn't be quite so exciting without them." We salute that sentiment, just make sure not to bore too many people at the pub with your new found car knowledge! cararticles.co.uk This is a superb round-up of noteworthy inventions by unsung heroes of the automotive industry that have shaped the design and technology of today’s cars. fleet transport magazineTable of ContentsPart 1 - The dreamers John DeLorean - Sweet, Fast Life A look into both the private and business life of the famous John DeLorean, following his extraordinary road from success to complete failure. Preston Tucker - Too Good for his Time The life of Indy 500 engineer Preston Tucker, and the strange fate of his helicopter-powered car, Torpedo, still regarded as one of the best cars of all times. Felix Wankel The genius German engineer, author of the only working prototype of a rotary engine, who was not recognized until after his death. Gabriel Voisin Known as the greatest design philosopher of his time. Inspired by industrial fantasists Clement Ader and Le Corbusier, his cars fulfilled an idea of ergonomics coupled with unusual shapes. Carl Borgward Building the best cars in Germany was not enough. A true story about how BMW destroyed its competitor in 1961. Malcolm Bricklin Also known as the unsinkable Bricklin. He has had more failures and scandals than anyone else in the car business, yet surprisingly he has never been in jail and still keeps generating crazy ideas. Gerald Wiegert A man whose quest was to build the first All-American supercar that would be better than Lamborghini. He fulfilled his dream by creating the Vector W8, but had to pay a price like other dreamers. Roumen Antonov The Bulgarian inventor, currently living in Paris, invented a revolutionary new type of internal combustion engine, a new gearbox, and tried to revive the Bugatti Atlantic in his 4-stroke prototype. Still operating with huge losses, he will probably come out as a winner eventually. Guy Negre He surprised the world by inventing a way to produce cheap zero-emission vehicles. His Air-car is powered by compressed air, but the start of mass-production has been postponed since 2000. The next launch date is 2011 - is it going to be yet another failure? Part 2 - Times and countries Panhard & Levassor The trailblazers of the French car industry, Panhard & Levassor are now totally forgotten, despite pioneering the front engine layout that is still used in modern day car production. The last romantics Producing exclusive and pricey cars in France of the 50s and 60s was probably a crazy idea. That's why Facel Vega, Monica and even Citroen failed. No luxury car has been mass-produced in France after 1970. The end of the royal cars The unfortunate timeline of events that led Britain from being the top car manufacturer in Europe to a country where there are no native cars produced at all. Under the red stamp A tribute to the talented car designers of Russia whose projects failed to see daylight. The story ends on a more positive note, telling about the achievements of Russian contemporary designers. Part 3 - There is nothing new about a car Internal combustion engine Popular culture has made Gottlieb Daimler the inventor of the internal combustion engine. However, the idea was first described by Al-Jazari and Leonardo da Vinci, the first working prototype was allegedly built by Huygens back in 1673, but it was an Englishman who patented the first working engine. Electric cars An electric car is not an invention of the 21st century. In fact, the concept has existed for more than 170 years. The first working example was built in 1834. Fuel cells How about the naughty announcement by General Motors in 1967 that it had invented a fuel cell powered car, suggesting it had developed the entire idea? The first fuel cell was built by William Robert Grove in 1838. Turbo boost The invaluable invention was patented by coal-miner Francis Roots in 1860. Carburettor Neither Karl Benz nor Donat Banki was the first man to build a carburettor. Siegfried Markus created a brush carburettor in 1875, and Frederick Lanchester built his wick carburettor around 1890. Disc brakes The first set of disc brakes was produced by Frederick Lanchester in 1901, yet 107 years later, there are producers that still mount drum brakes on their cars. 4x4 car Four-wheel drive was first designed by a Dutch firm, Spyker, in 1902. Just five years later the Caldwell brothers pushed the boundaries even further by creating a 4x4 car with a four-wheel steering system that allowed the car to move sideways. Windscreen wiper One of the only automotive inventions contributed by a lady. Mary Anderson patented the first windscreen wiper in 1905 and Charlotte Bridgewood improved her design in 1917. Electric horn Although pneumatic klaxons were in use up until the early '30s, the first electric horn was invented in 1908. Fuel injection system Although the modern fuel injection system was perfected by Bosch during the '50s, it was as early as 1898 that Frederick Lanchester started experimenting with injection. 1910 is the year when the first steadily working fuel injection system was built by Adam Farwell. Motor starter A simple hand crank was used to start an engine in early motor cars. It was both tough and dangerous. Charles Kettering built a working example of an electric starter in 1910 but it took almost 40 years for all carmakers around the world to stop using hand cranks. Hydraulic brakes Malcolm Lockheed invented hydraulic brakes in 1918. Although his invention was considered suspicious, it took only three years for hydraulic brakes to appear on a Duesenberg. They had no choice - the car was too fast and too heavy for anything else to be able to stop it. Short and exciting facts about car ergonomics and other inventions, like the first car stereo, first front-wheel drive car, first fuel station, electric windows and air-bags. 6 Index by model name, code, issue date

David & Charles American Independent Automakers: AMC to Willys
Book Synopsis"American Independent Automakers 1945-1960" covers the attempts by major makes such as Kaiser-Frazer, Willys, Packard, Studebaker, Tucker, Nash and Hudson to compete with the 'Big Three' in America. The 'Independents' were the first to introduce all-new models in an attempt to increase their market share and ensure the future. Also, there were dozens of backyard enthusiasts trying to design the perfect American sports car, such as Cunningham, Fitch, Darrin, Williams, etc. A similar number endeavoured to build small, economical cars such as Davis, Allstate, Playboy, Crosley and the diminutive King Midget, yet all were ultimately doomed to fail. There were steam cars, microcars, three-wheel cars and flying cars, all competing to capture the consumer's fancy and become significant builders in the years following World War II. Detailed captions and supportive text combine with the use of contemporary brochures, period literature, factory photos, and over 90 new, unpublished colour photos of restored examples to relate the importance of these historic vehicles. This book looks at all the major makers, focusing on the innovations, unique styling and features, and why, ultimately, all failed.

David & Charles Don Hayter's MGB Story: The birth of the MGB in
Book SynopsisThis is the inside story of the workings of the MG Design and Development Office in Abingdon, from 1956 until MG's closure in 1980, as told by Chief Design & Development Engineer, Don Hayter. This book explains how the various models were conceived, drawn, planned and developed by a small team of engineers. It also shows how the constant evolution of BMC, including the Triumph-Austin merger, frequently changed input to, and control of, the department. Safety legislation, mainly imposed by the United States, could have killed MG, but detailed here are the design changes that allowed the MGB, and other models, to survive. Trying to remain as individual as possible, MG developed record-breakers and a unique Competition Department during the period covered by this book. Special cars were built and tested, and prototypes for the MGB replacement, using engines from any part of the group, were drawn up. The continuing support of the American market was essential and much valued, but holding company, British Leyland, prioritised the TR7 – a decision that, ultimately, led to the closure of a successful, happy MG company.

David & Charles Bugatti Type 46 & 50: The Big Bugattis
Book SynopsisThe Bugatti Type 46 was announced in the autumn of 1929. The new Bugatti chassis, at almost twelve feet in length and powered by an 8-cylinder engine of 5300cc, was intended to be the basis of a superlative large luxury car - and so it proved to be. Bodied by the greatest European coachbuilders to the highest standards of quality and style for rich and discerning clientele, the T46 was in many ways a smaller Royale and is said to have been the favourite of Ettore Bugatti. Later, an optional supercharger became available to create the 46S model. In 1930 the Bugatti Type 50 superseded the T46. The new model still used the T46's chassis and most of its running gear, but featured a new, high-performance, twin-overhead-camshaft engine of just under 5-litre capacity. This supercharged unit gave the T50 very spirited performance for such a large and luxurious car, placing the model firmly in the Grand Sport category.1931 saw a team of T50s take part in the Le Mans 24-Hour race, but the cars were withdrawn before the race finished after Rost's car crashed, tragically killing a spectator in the process. In total, fewer than five hundred T46 and T50 Bugattis were built in but, with the obvious exception of the Royale, these cars represented the pinnacle of luxury car manufacture for the famous Molsheim marque. Book SynopsisThe pace at which technology progresses within the motor industry can be incredibly fast. What may have seemed an almost insurmountable problem in the late 80s and early 90s and therefore a major achievement when resolved, would now seem a minor inconvenience due to the advances made in component technology. Aston Martin Engine Development thoroughly details the design and development of Aston Martin engines including the 580X Vantage, the Virage, and the V8 Coupe. In particular it focusses on the twin supercharged 32 valve Vantage engine - an engine which set new standards, being the most powerful production car engine in the world at the time of its release in 1992. Illustrated with photographs from that time and including power and torque curves, this book provides a unique look into a period of Aston's history, written by one of the key men involved in making it happen. It gives an insight into life at the AM factory at Newport Pagnell; an understanding of the benefits of Supercharging at the time of manufacture; and a historic record of engine design, development and production that would otherwise have been lost to time.Aston Martin Engine Development will appeal to Aston Martin owners and enthusiasts and to anyone else with an interest in engines and high-performance cars.

Book SynopsisAn engaging history of the people and policies that profoundly transformed the American landscape—and the daily lives of Americans.Trade ReviewDivided Highways is the best and most important book yet published about how asphalt and concrete have changed the United States. Quite simply, the Interstate Highway System is the longest and largest engineered structure in the history of the world, and it has enormously influenced every aspect of American life. Tom Lewis is an engaging prose stylist with a gift for the telling anecdote and appropriate example. -- Kenneth T. Jackson * Harvard Design Magazine *A fascinating work... with a subject central to contemporary life but to which few, if any, have devoted so much thoughtful analysis and good humor. * Minneapolis Star-Tribune *Anyone who has ever driven on a U.S. interstate highway or eaten at an exit-ramp McDonald's will come away from this book with a better understanding of what makes modern America what it is. * Chicago Tribune *Lewis describes in a convincing, lively, and well-documented narrative the evolution of America's roadway system from one of the world's worst road networks to its best. -- John Pucher * Journal of the American Planning Association *Lewis provides a comprehensive and balanced examination of America's century-long infatuation with the automobile and the insatiable demands for more and better road systems. University of Pennsylvania Press Women at the Wheel
Book SynopsisWomen at the Wheel shows how stereotypes of women as uninterested in automobiles and, more perniciously, as poor drivers, has little basis in historical reality. However, Katherine J. Parkin argues that in American culture women are still considered imposters when they are at the wheel.Trade ReviewWomen at the Wheel is a remarkable tour de force. The book sweeps through the twentieth century and into current times to examine how American women have been associated with the car. The scale of the coverage is awesome, and the sources are both numerous and diverse . . . Katherine Parkin has combined the traditional diligence of the historian digging through archives and libraries with the technology of the internet to create an analysis which should appeal not only to academics, but to a much wider audience. * The Journal of Transport History *[T]ranscends historical narration, offering a meditation on gender roles and power relations . . . Women at the Wheel does a wonderful job of analyzing the relationship of women to automobiles. * Business History Review *Parkin challenges many of our historical notions about women and driving, especially in the early period, and her work adds greatly to the ongoing conversation about automobility in the United States . . . Woman at the Wheel adds depth to well-known stories and brings a fresh perspective to the table. * Technology and Culture *Now I understand why I so often end up in the passenger seat! Katherine Parkin has convinced me that driving-and all that surrounds it-is one of the most gendered experiences in American history. Women at the Wheel reads like a romp through American popular culture, but Parkin's claims are well worth taking seriously. * Beth Bailey, author of Sex in the Heartland *Buying, driving, and fixing cars has always been a highly gendered experience, as Katherine Parkin shows in this engaging and richly researched narrative. But when the focus is shifted from an experience overwhelmingly understood to be male to what it was like for women at the wheel, a deeper meaning is revealed: the ongoing power imbalance between women and men. * Susan Ware, author of Game, Set, Match: Billie Jean King and the Revolution in Women's Sports *If you've ever wondered just what it was that drove Thelma and Louise over a cliff, you need to read this book. In her fascinating work of historical scholarship, Katherine Parkin uses twentieth-century popular culture-from lowbrow to high, from the front pages of newspapers to the poetry of e.e. cummings, from an interview with Newt Gingrich to the fiction in magazines-to demonstrate how American men tried to stop American women from discovering the empowerment possibilities that lay 'behind the wheel.' * Ruth Schwartz Cowan, author of More Work for Mother: The Ironies of Household Technology from the Open Hearth to the Microwave *Women at the Wheel takes a novel approach to exploring-and debunking-the tired but persistent clichés about women's ineptitude behind the wheel. Katherine Parkin's examination of archival and popular sources reveals how both cars and drivers have been gendered in fascinating and provocative ways. * Jennifer Scanlon, author of Bad Girls Go Everywhere: The Life of Helen Gurley Brown *

All credit, then, to those people at Jaguar who truly believed in the car and, over a period of nearly 20 years, turned the ugly duckling into a swan. From the moment the XJ-S HE arrived in 1981, there seemed to be renewed hope, and from then on, the car went from strength to strength to become the much-admired grand tourer it always should have been. The book contains a timeline of the key events in the history of the XJ-S and an overview of the evolution of the XJ-S from the XJ27 prototype. There are Appendices covering identification/serial numbers, UK showroom prices through the years and sales in the US by year.

The Crowood Press Ltd Rover SD1: The Full Story 1976-1986
Book SynopsisDavid Bache’s superbly styled hatchback gave Rover a highly distinctive large executive-class car in the 1970s and 1980s, and a successful motorsport programme in the first half of the 1980s only added to its desirability. The original carburetted V8 and 6-cylinder petrol models were supplemented by injected V8s and by 4-cylinder petrol and diesel types to widen the range’s appeal – and yet sales would always be disappointing, thanks in no small measure to variable and sometimes simply awful build quality. Nevertheless, the SD1 remains a favourite with enthusiasts today, and stands out at classic car gatherings just as it always stood out on the road when it was new. Now in paperback for 2021, this is the complete story of the Rover SD1, including full production histories and comprehensive and specification details.

Aarhus University Press Between Denmark and Detroit: Ford Motor Company
Book SynopsisIn 1919, the Ford Motor Company – the world’s largest automobile manufacturer – decided to make a small Nordic country its bridgehead to continental Europe. Denmark was a good choice geographically and because of the country’s favourable customs policy. During the 1920s, Ford’s iconic Model T was assembled in Copenhagen, with large quantities exported from there to most of north-eastern Europe. The innovative manufacturing technology employed in Copenhagen was the same as that used in Ford’s American assembly plants, and the Copenhagen plant was actually designed by Albert Kahn – the architect behind Ford’s famous Highland Park factory in Detroit, Michigan. The Danish Ford Motor Company successfully continued production throughout the recession of the 1930s, the German occupation of Denmark in 1940–1945 and the Cold War and economic boom of the 1950s. The Copenhagen factory closed in 1966, obliged to give way to Ford’s larger operations elsewhere in Europe.Henry Ford’s pioneering principles of mass production went beyond mere technology. The large-scale serial manufacturing of uniform products was also a way of fulfilling his vision of an affluent consumer society. But as Fordism was relocated across the Atlantic, the rigorous discipline and fast-paced work routines applied in Detroit were challenged by local traditions, shifting market conditions and, most notably, a labour movement that was far more powerful than its American counterpart.Between Denmark and Detroit offers a detailed history of the Danish Ford Motor Company, but the book also has a wider scope, elucidating the concept of Fordism and how it was transformed by its move across the Atlantic.Lars K. Christensen holds a PhD in history. He is the author of several publications on labour history and industrial heritage. Presently, he is head of research and cultural heritage at the ROMU museums group.
