  • X-Teams, Updated Edition, With a New Preface: How

Harvard Business Review Press X-Teams, Updated Edition, With a New Preface: How

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn essential work on teams—now updated with new research and tools and a new preface—X-Teams shows how an externally focused team model is the key to fueling innovation and your organization's success. You build a team around top-notch talent. The team members work well together; they're committed to the mission and are highly motivated to perform. Yet the results are disappointing. You're not seeing creativity and flexibility. You're not getting breakthrough ideas."Good" teams build camaraderie, confidence in their abilities, and a solid process for working together. But these internal dynamics—while positive in themselves—can create a wall between the team and the outside world. And that wall can prevent the team from adapting to change and delivering value to the organization. In this updated, streamlined edition, with a new preface and practical tools, Deborah Ancona and Henrik Bresman describe an externally focused team model—the x-team—that is even more relevant today than when it was first introduced. With their distinctively flexible membership and leadership structure, x-teams continuously reach outward to fuel the innovation process. With new examples and research from organizations such as Microsoft, Takeda, and the Museum of Modern Art, Ancona and Bresman show you how to build x-teams that: Keep pace with shifts in markets, technologies, cultures, and your competition Innovate by moving quickly from generating ideas to executing and diffusing them throughout your organization Employ "distributed leadership" to unlock crucial information, expertise, and new ways of working together—wherever these qualities reside, whether within or outside your company In an increasingly complex and ever-changing world, where adaptability and creativity are paramount to an enterprise's success—and even its survival—X-Teams is your handbook for winning.Trade ReviewAdvance Praise for the Updated Edition of X-Teams:"The authors succeed in conveying the importance of wide-ranging exploration and teamwork as essential for innovation." — Financial Times"The authors dive into the nitty-gritty details of engineering a better team." — Time.com"X-teams are the answer to performing in today's turbulent world. They enable organizations to move from strategy to implementation and from bureaucracy to innovation, creating value and profitable growth. The key is to combine external outreach to all stakeholders with an internal focus on creating a safe, disciplined, and learning culture." — Alan Mulally, former CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; former CEO, Ford Motor Company"When X-Teams was first written, Ancona and Bresman were prescient, well ahead of their time. They understood the changing landscape of teamwork and what it meant long before it was clear. Now, this terrific book is even better: well-researched, packed with engaging stories, and immensely practical." — Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School; author, Right Kind of Wrong"A game-changing book. X-Teams provides a compelling case for the importance of combining a sharp external focus with robust internal processes to overcome inertia and unlock transformational outcomes. The authors' practical framework is both insightful and actionable, and their real-world examples demonstrate the power of this approach." — Elcin Barker Ergun, CEO, Menarini Group"While strong internal cohesion and alignment are key to team success, it's crucial for team leaders at every level to have the humility and vigilance to look outward. X-teams spread leadership across the organization and facilitate learning and coordination within and across boundaries. This is a must-read for anyone trying to accelerate innovation." — Jerry Ng, founder and Chairman, Bank Jago"There are teams and there are x-teams. X-teams combat our inward-facing tendencies, opening our minds to the diversity and power of the world around us. They have helped us at Takeda R&D to increase our external learning and partnering. Use them as a tool to transform your organization." — Andrew Plump, MD, President, Research & Development, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company

Book SynopsisContrary to the common saying: we do want you to judge this new edition of Organizational Behavior by its front cover. Specifically, featured is that this is the 14th edition, it takes an ""Evidence-Based Approach," and similar to the previous edition there are now three Luthans authors. This 14th edition is based on the foundation provided by the first mainline text which has become the classic for the study and understanding of organizational behavior. However, by taking an evidence based approach, this insures that, even though a classic, this new edition adds the most recent and relevant research to the most extensive, up-to-date reference-base of any organizational behavior text. By adding the two closely related authors (professor sons) literally pumps ""new blood"" into the sustainability of this classic text by Fred Luthans. Importantly, Fred has recently been recognized with: 1) Lifetime Achievement Award in Organizational Behavior; 2) Top 1% of Citation Count of all researchers in the world; and 3) the #1 most cited author in Organizational Behavior textbooks. Finally, this new edition recognizes that even though the theoretical framework and coverage largely remains, the context of organizational behavior is rapidly changing. This new edition reflects the ""New Age"" environment, but still holds to the premise that in today's organizations, success and competitive advantage still comes from the understanding, prediction, and effective management of human resources. With this new edition we invite you to continue the never-ending journey guided by the best organizational behavior theory, research, and application.

Book SynopsisHow do today’s leaders shift from playing it safe to playing for great? In a volatile and complex world roiled by a climate crisis, global pandemics, and disruptive technologies like AI, hyper-individualized leadership models no longer make sense. To seize emerging opportunities and achieve sustainable growth, leaders must recognize that a team’s success flows from the intelligence, achievements, and growth of the entire collective. In Safe to Great, Skip Bowman proposes a leadership sea change that puts purpose before profit, and the team before the individual. He draws on the concept of psychological safety as the key to unlocking an organization’s growth mindset, and unites theory and practice in principles that will help leaders shape innovative workplaces that thrive on experimentation.Grounded in more than 25 years of experience working with global organizations, Safe to Great is designed for leaders who want to bring more hope and critical thinking to how they manage. Bowman makes a compelling appeal for a new standard of leadership that moves people and organizations from a place of relative comfort and little risk to a space of daring curiosity, engagement, and collaboration.Trade Review"A timely and positive way forward in our time-starved and often bleakly-portrayed future."—Ricardo Troiano, Global Head, Change and Organizational Development, Syngenta"This is a call to action that no thinking person can ignore! 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book marks a milestone in Economics publishing. Sustainable Economics is *the* subject of the moment, as businesses across the globe face up to peak oil prices, climate instability, increasingly complex environmental legislation and the challenge of adapting to a new business landscape. Sustainable Economics: Context, Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st Century Practitioner debugs the language of sustainable development. It explores the strengths and weaknesses of the many and diverse schools of thought. The book enables the modern business student and practitioner to disentangle the complex, often convoluted debate relating to sustainability, and it provides the tools necessary to lead their organizations through the murky waters of current times and prepare for the challenges of the future. Eschewing the linear – take, make and waste – approach of current business and manufacturing thinking, this book revisits the ecological models underpinning recent economic sustainability theory, and re-examines the consequences of modern ecological thought upon business strategies relating to sustainability. A chapter is also dedicated to the "circular economy", already in common parlance at policy levels in the UK, and notably in China and other developing countries.Packed with the most recent research papers, Sustainable Economics is an essential resource for the 21st-century business practitioner and legislator. The book is supported with a large array of teaching and learning material, for both formal and informal use, ranging from role play to data analysis which are available on request with the purchase of this book. Trade Review I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a clear and expansive view of this complex but vital field. - Ian Roderick, Director, The Schumacher Institute || Prudence dictates that every business person — not only the students among us — read and heed what Skene and Murray have to say. - Crosslands BulletinTable of ContentsPreface1. Book SynopsisWhat exactly is it that good leaders do to enable their teams to succeed? How do they think? What do findings from neuroscience teach us about effective leadership? Leader explores and answers these crucial questions. In this wide-ranging book, Katy and Emmie eloquently combine up-to-date research in psychology and neuroscience with inspiring examples of success to show that leadership can be learned and that it is all about looking after your people. They take you on a journey to meet a diverse selection of great leaders from multiple spheres - from the sports field to the corporate world - and talk you through the process by which effective leaders have become great leaders. The secret lies in mastering three key principles: know your people, love your people, inspire your people. These three principles form the core of the book, which also provides a range of practical activities designed to help you reflect on your own and your team's progress and performance. The authors contend that leadership which focuses on the flourishing of people is not only intrinsically valuable, but is also the most important factor in achieving success in any domain. To provide proof, the book features inspiring examples of leaders who have made a significant impact in their organisation, alongside insightful analysis of how and why effective leaders outperform others - not just in terms of results, but, even more importantly, through the contributions they make to people's lives. Emerald Publishing Limited Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLeadership is a slippery concept. Researchers disagree on its essence, describing it variously as behaviours, character traits or styles. Effective leaders understand that we make meaning of our experiences by creating stories we believe to be true, but which are largely based on fragmentary evidence filtered through our biases, beliefs and dispositions. Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence draws on a range of disciplines and scholarly traditions to build a compelling case for a new perspective on leadership, seeing it as a deeply embodied, intuitive skill of curating shared narratives, in influence relationships. Defining narrative intelligence as 'our ability to evaluate the efficacy of the stories we create to serve our needs, our capacity to rewrite them, and the practical skill to take effective action', this book methodically outlines how leaders cultivate their own narrative intelligence to: Become the person they seek to be by aligning narratives and core values with actions Navigate through the challenging leadership space of populism and the erosion of traditional values Ethically curate the narrative others hold of them Strengthen self-efficacy, take more effective actions, and avoid stories which inadvertently undermine goals Communicate with trust and influence Build energy and alignment within teams by generating shared narratives Cultivate a culture of narrative intelligence This book will prepare leaders to reshape their own and others' stories to be more aligned with achieving goals and wellbeing. It will prove a useful resource to undergraduates and post-graduates in courses on leadership and management, as well as organizational development consultants and senior executives.Trade Review‘Many people live in a fixed narrative. Few people see themselves as the creators of their own culture. Leaders are rare people who learn to create genuine, shared narratives. In such networks people flourish and expectations are exceeded. This is a landmark book that explains how to do what many people cannot imagine doing.’ -- Professor Robert E. Quinn, Center for Positive Organizations, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan; Author of The Economics of Higher Purpose‘This is a book of sweeping scope. Morgan artfully synthesizes research and practice with a blend of compelling examples and stories. These provide the depth and breadth to provoke leadership self-reflection. For anyone interested in fresh approaches to leadership, this is a powerful resource.' -- Dr John Edwards, Researcher and Co-author of Schools That Deliver; International Co-ordinator: schools-that-deliver.com‘Comprehensive, insightful and thought-provoking; Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence offers both leaders and leadership scholars a truly innovative way of approaching the work of leadership. Enhanced by apt reflective prompts as well as activities to try, this book provides a welcome antidote to tired recipes for leadership which ignore its co-created, contextually sensitive nature.’ -- Professor Donna Ladkin, Graduate School of Leadership and Change, Antioch University; Author of Mastering the Ethical Dimension of Organizations: A Self-Reflective Guide to Developing Ethical Astuteness, and Rethinking Leadership: A New Look at Old Leadership Questions'Dr Morgan’s book is a ray of bright hope that opens the window on the mindset of leaders and the power of narratives to shape leadership, and in turn to shape followership. This book is a must-read for all involved in the study and practice of leadership.’ -- Rob Elkington, PhD, Adjunct Professor, University of Ontario Institute of Technology; Co-Author of Visionary Leadership in a Turbulent World: Thriving in the New VUCA Context and Exceptional Leadership by Design: How Design in Great Organizations Produces Great Leadership'Dr Greg Morgan has written at once a scholarly, practical and profound exploration of the stories we tell ourselves, how they impact us and how we can best manage and leverage them to be more effective leaders in this complex work world which we now live. I recommend it highly.’ -- John Campbell, Founding Director, Growth Coaching International, Sydney, Australia; Bend, Oregon, USA‘Greg Morgan’s new book is a challenge on many levels to the “data orthodoxy” of contemporary leadership practice. The senses of narrative and their appropriateness to leadership are cogently and compellingly laid out and supported. It is an explanation of how meaningful data amidst the richness of narrative can illuminate and lead us onto deeper learning and greater, real effectiveness in leadership. This very readable book has an important place today and for the future.’ -- Malcolm Elliott, President, Australian Primary Principals Association'A lot of books on leadership focus on the organizational “what” and “how” of leadership. Morgan takes a different, and important, stance in highlighting the “who” of leadership. By developing their narrative intelligence, leaders find practical wisdom from which they can co-create a reality of sustainability, well-being and success in their organization. It is a groundbreaking book.’ -- Professor Reinhard Stelter, University of Copenhagen; Author of The Art of Dialogue in Coaching: Towards Transformative Exchange and A Guide to Third Generation Coaching‘Greg Morgan's beautifully written manuscript embodies a resonating personal and collective truth that guides us down a deep and interconnected journey to illuminate the bonds between narrative intelligence, leadership influence and the execution of leadership intentions. After decades of working with organisations and individuals, John G. Miller knows that the troubles that plague them cannot be solved by pointing fingers and blaming others. Rather, the real solutions are found when each of us recognizes the value of our own accountability. In this book, Miller explains how negative, ill-focused questions like "Who dropped the ball?" harm rather than help. Conversely, when we begin to ask better questions - QBQs, questions behind the questions - and to see power in ourselves, then our lives and organisations are transformed. The chapters end with reflective questions, which would be the great basis of a journaling process, or discussion topics with a friend or colleague.... or simply to ponder. I read a lot of leadership books, and sometimes they can get a little repetitive, and end up just saying this one. The examples and questions make this one really engaging and I highly recommend picking this one. up! Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm so pleased I've read it and will definitely return to it over the years. * NetGalley *Table of ContentsPart 1 – Strategic Decision FiltersChapter 1 – Find your PurposeBusinesses need to find their reason for being, or their purpose. It gives employees a reason to come to work in the morning and leaders a way of filtering their decisions into right and wrong. A Purpose can be as simple as ‘Disney’s’ Creating Happiness’. It informs how you act and will build in an emotional attachment to your business. Disney have a saying that for 100% of your time you have to be ‘on purpose’, but you can be ‘off task’, but you can never be ‘on task’ and ‘off purpose’.Chapter 2 – Create an Unreasonable DreamEveryone and every business needs a Vision, or Dream, that describes where they want to be. It builds in direction and excitement about the future and provides a clear direction to build your Strategic Priorities and Goals around. If it reasonable, it means that is can be done today and allows us to stay within our comfort zones, if it is unreasonable, then it means we have a stretch and grow to get there. That means learning and growth, energy and excitement follow. This is chapter is not about building a just a vision statement, this is about building a detailed Vision that brings the future to life for your top team and your people.Chapter 3 – Live your ValuesThe behaviours we show in a business are reflections of our culture. Great values in a business help to decide who you want to recruit, who you promote, who you reward and who you fire. They bring people together and show how you are different. This chapter looks at what good looks like, how values are used in business and how to create them in an authentic and engaging way for your business.Chapter 4 – Set your StrategyYour strategy is what makes you different versus your competition. It is your competitive advantage. A clear strategy allows you to align where you spend money, how you structure your business, which products and service to bring to market and which markets to do business in. It is the final decision filter for a business.Part 2 – People and TeamsChapter 5 – Challenge the Status QuoWe need to create agile businesses, where we are all flexible enough to change and grow constantly; we need to adopt a growth mindset. Leaders need to challenge the small tactical as well as the big strategic things in a business all the time. Not only do leaders need to challenge and be challenged, but they need to be able to reset the business to absorb the changes constantly so that a new normal can be quickly established.Chapter 6 – Develop your Dream TeamThe most important team in any business is the senior management team and its challenge is to become high performing and to embrace excellence. Great teams start with a set of common goals, a vision, a purpose and some values, the leader must then create a feeling of safety so that members feel they can take a risk and make a mistake. From this will start to flow a feeling of trust, but this can only be truly enabled through being vulnerable and showing who you are. This means that people will try new things and be open when they don’t work out. From deep levels of trust comes Challenge, which is at the heart of my Team Excellence Model. Teams that challenge each other as a matter of course, don’t make it personal and are capable of moving on, growing the team and starting to embrace excellence. After Challenge follows Commitment and Accountability which ultimately leads to great Team Outcomes.Chapter 7 – Engage the EmotionsChapter 7 covers the areas of motivation, happiness, positivity and engagement; all the areas that leaders must understand if they are to get the most out of their people. The only way to grow a business is to grow the people within the business. Growth means stepping outside your comfort zone and having the support from leaders to see you reach your goals. This chapter also covers the importance of creating a happy and engaged workforce who are prepared to put in the discretionary effort, because they will willingly follow you.Chapter 8 – Show GritResilience, which is at the heart of Grit, is a massive part of success. All businesses will hit challenging times and people within those businesses will have challenging times too, at times, just in their own part of the business. This chapter unwraps Grit and shows how to develop it in your team so that you can cope with what life and business throws at us.Part 3 – Strategy ExecutionChapter 9 – Create the Optimal StructureMost businesses create a hierarchical structure. It is the default setting in PowerPoint, if you look for a diagram on structure. The reality is that there are numerous types of structure that organisations can adopt, that will support the execution of their strategy. In this chapter we cover the main types of organisational sstructure that are adopted in today’s businesses, and discuss the pros and cons of each one. The Structures include: The Hierachy, The Matrix, The Core Plus and the Dynamic.Chapter 10 – Plan your Strategic PrioritiesEvery business needs a plan. This chapter explores what a good business plan looks like, what the contents should be and how to engage you team in creating one. It shows how to create an annual planning cycle and what it means to be strategic. It also discusses the importance of focus and not losing sight of what the most important priority is at any given time.Chapter 11 – Measure your SuccessYou manage what you measure, so what are you measuring? Everyone measures the financial aspects of a business, and this chapter explores the creation of a scorecard, based on Key Performance Indicators, that come from your Strategic Priorities. Your scorecard must not only show the essential financial indicators of a business but must also include how your people are feeling (e.g. staff engagement, churn), what you customers are saying about you (e.g.Net Promoter Score, number of projects from existing clients)and how good your systems and processes are supporting the delivery of your strategy (speed of delivery, number of faults, breakages etc. turnaround time).Chapter 12 – Execute through Great MeetingsMeetings should be the best part of your day, but they are often boring and inefficient. This last chapter shows what kind of meetings you should have, what the cadence should be, how they should be run and how to make them engaging and compelling.

Book SynopsisNobody likes to talk about endings. Here''s why we need to. Leaders spend a lot of time planning new initiatives. But what about the endings that go along with them? Most leaders are not taught how to manage themselves, let alone their teams and organization, through the messy, multifaceted discomfort of an ending. Making a team member redundant, merging two teams, cutting funding to a failed project: in all these situations we tend to focus on the new beginning, and rush past the ending that needs our care and attention. Dealing with endings well takes maturity and emotional intelligence. Leaders need to understand and process their own feelings before they can lead others through transition. Why does this matter? Because poorly managed endings leave a scar on everyone involved. Discretionary energy and motivation are not so forthcoming. Change programmes don't get traction, resistance and cynicism take root. Change fails. Leading Executive Coaches Alison Lucas and Lizzie Bentley Bowers provide this missing piece of the change leadership puzzle: a way of leading yourself and others through change in a respectful, emotionally agile way. Because better endings mean better beginnings.
