Linguistics Books
Equinox Publishing Ltd Describing Language: Form and Function
Book SynopsisHow does one's grammar depend on one's conception of language? In systemic functional linguistics, language is viewed as a meaning potential, thus embracing the view, now supported by contemporary theories of the evolution of human consciousness, that language has evolved in the living of life in society. Using the theoretical framework of systemic functional linguistics, the chapters of this book explore the nature of language, the relations of meaning and society, of form and meaning, and of grammar and lexis. Halliday has referred to the level of lexicogrammar as the powerhouse of language: this is where the resource for creating linguistic meaning resides. But language as resource cannot be adequately described as a set of syntagmatic structures; instead, the primary focus must be on the paradigmatic axis, which after all furnishes the principle for the actualisation of syntagms. Accordingly, aspects of Urdu and English semantics, grammar and lexis are presented here in terms of systemic options, realised as structures.Table of ContentsEditor's Preface by Jonathan J. Equinox Publishing Ltd Choice in Language: Applications in Text Analysis
Book SynopsisThe notion of Choice provides a constant underlying theme to work in Systemic Functional Linguistics, whether this is concerned with in-depth description of the system of lexicogrammatical options available within specific languages or with the analysis of the semiotic and/or social implications of the choices taken within specific texts. Yet to date little has been published exploring the applicability of choice across various contexts. This book addresses this gap in the literature by presenting a selection of writings from internationally renowned authors that develop the analytical perspective of choice across wide-ranging contexts and in some cases in languages other than English. The book demonstrates the value of Systemic Functional Linguistics as an "applicable" linguistics, which is a core tool in broader fields such as pedagogy, literary studies and critical discourse analysis.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Gerard O'Grady, Tom Bartlett and Lise Fontaine Part A: Interpersonal Choice and the Construction of Author Identity Chapter 2 Contextual Constraints, Linguistic Choice and Social Change: Evidence from Sex-worker Discourse in a South African City Ralph Adendorff, Rhodes University, South Africa, and Kiran Pienaar Chapter 3 'Voice in a 'Partly Free' Press: Appraisal Choices in Italian Journalistic Discourse Elizabeth Swain, Trieste University Chapter 4 The Use of Appraisal Resources in the Construction of Second-language Teacher-researcher Identity Gillian Moss, Norma Bartletta, Universidad del Norte, Columbia, and Jorge Mizuno, Universidad del Norte, Columbia Part B: Choice in Political Speech: Tension between the Need to Inform and Project Solidarity Chapter 5 The Choice of Grammatical Metaphor in French Political Tracts David Banks, Universite de Bretagne Occidentale Chapter 6: Choices in Tony's Talk: Phonological Paragraphing; Information Unit Nexuses and the Presentation of Tone Units Gerard O'Grady Part C: The Effects of Choice in Text-type Chapter 7: Choice and Domain: A Corpus-based Study with Special Reference to the BNC Baby Inas Mahfouz, Ain Shams University, Egypt Chapter 8: Investigating Thematic Choices in Two Newspaper Genres: An SFL-based Analysis Julia Lavid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid Chapter 9: Systemic Choice above the Clause: Research Article Abstracts as a Case Study Akila Sellami-Baklouti, University of Sfax, Tunisia Chapter 10: Contentful and Contentlight Subject Themes in Informal Spoken English and Formal Written English Margaret Berry Chapter 11: Differential Realisation of Ellipsis in Texts Varied for Contextual Mode: Some Support for the 'Mode of Discourse - Textual Metafunction' Hook-up Ben Clarke, Cardiff University Part D: The Interplay of Choice across Different Modalities Chapter 12: Textual and Compositional Choices in the Tale of Gorilla by Anthony Browne A. Equinox Publishing Ltd Communication and Professional Relationships in Healthcare Practice
Book SynopsisCommunication and Professional Relationships in Healthcare Practice focuses on the crucial role that spoken interactions play in shaping relationships in contemporary healthcare practice. The authors apply theoretical concepts of communication to the workplace of healthcare, drawing upon scenarios based in the settings of clinical experience. The book presents a wide range of interactions (including consultations, team meetings, dialogues and casual conversations) between health professionals, their colleagues and their clients or patients in a variety of settings. Drawing on the latest research in applied linguistics and professional communication, the authors introduce readers to a number of approaches that can be used to analyse these interactions. Using these techniques, readers will discover exactly how central themes of healthcare practice (including trust, empathy, expertise and breaking bad news) are constructed through the communicative choices that participants make in these interactions. Designed specifically for medical, nursing and allied health practitioners with an interest in communication, the book makes the techniques of discourse analysis accessible and provides ample opportunities for individual practitioners to apply this knowledge to their own professional contexts.Trade Review'Refreshingly, the book addresses communication not only in interactions between health professionals and patients, but amongst team members and between health professionals in an array of communicatively challenging real world contexts. It brings home to the reader the complexity of communication in health care, and it offers practitioners many tools for reflecting on their own and others' communicative practices, and for enhancing their professional interactions.' Gallaudet University Press,U.S. Indian Sign Language – An Analysis of Its Grammar
Book SynopsisSamar Sinha presents pioneering research into the grammatical properties of Indian Sign Language (ISL), a language used by members of the Deaf community in India. This detailed and well-illustrated study describes the grammar of ISL and is supplemented by comparative and theoretical analyses in the core areas of sublexical structure, morphology, and syntax. Sinha offers a field-based, comprehensive analysis that covers topics such as sign formation parameters, syllable structure, sonority hierarchy, semantics of space, pluralization strategies, phi-features, indexing and localization, agreement, and word order. He provides a description of the Indian Deaf community that serves to frame his analysis of ISL and highlights the need for greater awareness and acknowledgment of the language and its users. The lack of research on ISL in Indian academia has slowed efforts toward the standardization of ISL and the development of pedagogical materials. This work adds to the growing understanding of natural human language in general and ISL in particular. It also contributes to the empowerment of the Deaf community in India and will strengthen the efforts carried out by d/Deaf activists and researchers.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Far-Right Discourse of Multiculturalism in
Book SynopsisThis book employs discursive psychology to examine how far-right discourse on issues related to multiculturalism is received, interpreted, adapted and contested in political rhetoric and informal talk. It brings together the latest research from sociology and media studies concerning the circulation of far-right messages in the era of digitalization and the ‘hybrid media system’, and critical discursive psychology research into political and lay discourse pertaining to multiculturalism. Drawing on empirical material from the Nordic context allows for an analysis of political discourse within societies in which a strong tradition of social democratic welfare states now exists alongside the rise of populist and far-right parties. Operating in countries with comparatively high national internet and social media penetration, this book explores the extent to which the success of these parties is linked to their skilful use of social media, in order to mobilise popular support for their political agendas. The collection’s multilevel perspective aims to further the understanding of how the anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalist ideologies propagated by these parties contributes to the mainstreaming of their rhetoric among the political ‘elite’, as well as to the societal normalization of nationalist and xenophobic discourse. In doing so it will provide fresh insights for students and scholars of sociology, social psychology, discourse analysis, media and communication, and political science.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: The far-right discourse on multiculturalism in intergroup interactions.- Chapter 2: Mobilising gender equality and protectionism in Finnish parliamentary sessions and online discussions around immigration: An intersectional and critical discursive psychological analysis.- Chapter 3: Underdogs Shepherding the Flock – Discursive outgrouping of the internal enemy in action.- Chapter 4: A critical discursive psychological study of Dialogical Constructions of Hate-speech in Established Media and Online Discussions.- Chapter 5: Trying to Ignore the Bullies and the Buzz: a critical discursive study of How Pro-Migration Activists Cope With and Contest Right-Wing Nationalist Interference.- Chapter 6: Making enemies: Reactive dynamics of discursive polarization.- Chapter 7: From angry monologues to engaged dialogue? Springer International Publishing AG Narrative as Dialectic Abduction
Book SynopsisThis book presents a fresh approach to the communicability of narratives, revealing the cognitive underpinnings of Charles Sanders Peirce’s pragmatistic model. It demonstrates how abductive processes modify habits of belief and action in what Peirce refers to as double consciousness. Abductions generated during double consciousness paradigms have increased efficacy compared to instinctual abductions. Novel inferences from working memory become consciously integrated with existing long-term memory units which permits fuller consideration of the plausibility of propositions. Special attention is given to children’s prelinguistic means to represent propositional or assertory conflicts, and to resolve these conflicts via listening and re-telling narrators’ accounts. Overall, this book serves both a theoretical and applied purpose. It is intended to support innovative therapeutic interventions to facilitate the (re)construction of narratives by adults and children. Its practical applications and theoretical grounding will appeal to graduate students and scholars alike, who wish to examine narrative as an interdisciplinary enterprise—an ontological and cultural phenomenon (narration by way of action/image sequences), not just a literary/linguistic paradigm. Ultimately, this account presents narrative as a modal forum to resolve logical and practical conflicts, compelling the interpreter to become an involved partner in the narrated event itself. Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: Promoting Dialectic Processes Through Dialogic Inquiry.- Chapter 2: Semiotic Foundations of Narrative.- Chapter 3: Prelinguistic Considerations.- Chapter 4: Processing Precursors in Narrative Genres: The Case of Abductive Instinct.

Springer International Publishing AG Linguistic Stratigraphy: Recovering Traces of
Book SynopsisThis book examines the historical linguistic panorama of Western South America, focusing on the minor languages that were partially or fully replaced by the expansion of the Quechuan family through the region. The author presents a coherent and generally applicable framework for studying prehistoric language shift processes and reconstructing earlier linguistic landscapes before significant language spreads ousted former patterns of linguistic diversity. This framework combines toponymic evidence with the analysis of substrate contact effects, and, in some cases, extralinguistic evidence, to create an integrated if incomplete of extinct and undocumented languages. In an authoritative exploration of case studies, concerning Aymara in parts of Southern Peru, Cañar in Ecuador, and Chacha in Northern Peru, the book shows how the identities of lost languages and earlier linguistic panoramas can be reconstructed.Table of Contents1. De Gruyter Innovative Investigations of Language in Autism
Book SynopsisIn recent decades, a growing number of children have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a condition characterized by, among other features, social interaction deficits and language impairment. Yet the precise nature of the disorder’s impact on language development is not well understood, in part because of the language variability among children across the autism spectrum. The contributors to this volume — experts in fields ranging from communication disorders to developmental and clinical psychology to linguistics — use innovative techniques to address two broad questions: Is the variability of language development and use in children with ASD a function of the language, such that some linguistic domains are more vulnerable to ASD than others? Or is the variability a function of the individual, such that some characteristics predispose those with ASD to have varying levels of difficulty with language development and use? Contributors investigate these questions across linguistic levels, from lexical semantics and single-clause syntax, to computationally complex phonology and the syntax-pragmatics interface. Authors address both spoken and written domains within the wider context of language acquisition. This timely and broadly accessible volume will be of interest to a broad range of specialists, including linguists, psychologists, sociologists, behavioral neurologists, and cognitive neuroscientists.Trade ReviewA useful primer for clinicians — beginning and seasoned, as well as educators.

De Gruyter Dictionary of Italian-Turkish Language (1641) by
Book SynopsisGiovanni Molino’s Dittionario Della Lingua Italiana, Turchesca (1641), is the first extensive Turkish dictionary of its kind, with nearly 8000 lexical head entries excerpted, not from the Ottoman literature, but the everyday Turkish language, the vernacular for at least a part of the population of 17th century Constantinople.Molino, born Armenus Turcicus Yovhannēs of Ankara, was exposed to the Turkish language from childhood, unlike other authors of the known ‘texts in transcription”. In Armenian cultural history, he is remembered as a man of letters, a publisher and the translator of religious texts, whose services to the history of the Turkish language and the corresponding contribution to Ottoman Turkish culture were to this date unknown. The editor has reversed and reorganised the material of the lexicon from Italian-Turkish to Turkish-Italian. The lexical entries of Molino’s dictionary are presented according to morphological and phonological principles, with their orthographic variants side by side, revealing information on the morpho-phonological patterns of Ottoman-Turkish at that time. The language Molino recorded sounds almost like contemporary Turkish and can be considered a bridge to the modern Turkish language.

De Gruyter Eugenio Coseriu: Beyond Structuralism
Book SynopsisEugenio Coseriu counts among the most important linguistic scholars of the second half of the 20th century. He is known mainly as a structuralist and a Romance linguist, but his work is in fact far more expansive in scope, including a comprehensive linguistic theory as well as writings on a wide range of issues, from semantics, syntax, typology, variational linguistics, language change, pragmatics and text linguistics to Vulgar Latin, the history of the philosophy of language and the history of Romance linguistics. Coseriu’s thought is founded on solid philosophical principles, and his life brought him into contact with a number of different academic traditions and cultures. However, for a variety of reasons (among which, the languages in which he tended to publish: Spanish, Italian, French and German), knowledge of his thought is rather marginal in the Anglo-American world. This book aims to go some way to addressing this situation by offering an overview in English of Coseriu’s main contributions to linguistics, and indeed to other disciplines. It is of general interest for the study of linguistics, the history of linguistics, and the philosophy of language, as well as for a broader reading public.

De Gruyter Performative Linguistic Space: Ethnographies of
Book SynopsisThis volume explores "performative linguistic space", namely a space which ushers or hinders linguistic practices. Space is made productive as a result of individuals who bring linguistic politics from diverse spaces into new ones. By moving away from the notions of discrete units of language and linguistic communities associated with a specific space, this volume suggests a fluid productive aspect of space. It goes beyond the assumed space-linguistic community association through ethnographic accounts that mediate linguistic anthropology, cultural geography, sociolinguistics, and deaf studies.
