Random House USA Inc Why Wall Street Matters
Book SynopsisA timely, counterintuitive defense of Wall Street and the big banks as the invisible—albeit flawed—engines that power our ideas, and should be made to work better for all of us Maybe you think the banks should be broken up and the bankers should be held accountable for the financial crisis in 2008. Maybe you hate the greed of Wall Street but know that it’s important to the proper functioning of the world economy. Maybe you don’t really understand Wall Street, and phrases such as “credit default swap” make your eyes glaze over. Maybe you are utterly confused by the fact that after attacking Wall Street mercilessly during his campaign, Donald Trump has surrounded himself with Wall Street veterans. But if you like your smart phone or your widescreen TV, your car or your morning bacon, your pension or your 401(k), then—whether you know it or not—you are a fan of Wall Street. William D. Cohan is no knee-jerk advocate for

Taylor & Francis Inc Bioterrorism
Book SynopsisThe outbreak of anthrax infections that followed September 11, 2001, showed all too clearly that while we can defend ourselves against bioterrorism, our defenses need improvement. What''s most important is the ability to recognize the associated disease, and recognize them quickly. Yet, many in the medical world are unfamiliar with the characteristic signs and symptoms of bioterrorism agents and are unable to differentiate between diseases whose symptoms appear almost identical. While a plethora of information on such diseases is available, finding it is time consuming.Bioterrorism: Field Guide to Disease Identification and Initial Patient Management is an accessible resource that helps first-responders to quickly recognize the signs and symptoms caused by exposure to bioterrorism agents. It provides enough information to initiate treatment while a definitive diagnosis is being determined and presents measures for preventing contamination of those involved in the victims'' mediTrade Review"Finding the best information that is currently available frequently requires persistence and effort. Von Lubitz … here provides ready access to information about infectious diseases for health care workers … . … [The book] presents information … in a manner that would prove useful even in very stressful moments. Thus it is a book suitable for true field use. … If needed, it would provide the essential information to start treatment, and maintain it until expert assistance become available. Summing Up: Recommended." - CHOICE "As the title implies this field guide can be used as a starting place for obtaining rapid access to relevant medical information. … Recommended for non-specialists medical personnel at any level e.g. physicians, nurses, paramedics and first responders, and for establishments responsible for public safety." - E-Streams, Vol. 7, No. 11Won Highly Commended in the Public Health category of the 2004 British Medical Association Library Book Competition. "Field Guides like this are exactly what our country needs to address the hysteria that seems to surround the subject of chemical and biological attack. We must address this hysteria through education and training programs to educate the public, health care professionals, and our senior leaders. This field guide gives concise usable information to diagnose and treat such problems. I heartily recommend it for every practitioner in the field and for our public so that they are educated about the threat and can replace the hysteria with a reasoned approach based on fact." - Lt. General Paul K. Carlton, Jr. (Ret.), Director, Integrative Center for Homeland Security, Texas A&M University "Dr. von Lubitz is a world leader in the field of high fidelity medical simulation. This manual, which provides a basic and accessible summary of information on possible bioterrorism agents, is a timely addition to the literature on this topic. Through concise prose and formatting, Dr. von Lubitz presents information necessary for those wishing to simulate bioterrorism events, teach about the topic, or recognize and treat these conditions at a basic level." - Kenneth A. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC 3D Printing Design
Book SynopsisTo work with the materials of tomorrow, design students across visual arts disciplines need to understand the cutting edge of today. Whether you're modelling in interiors, designing in fashion or constructing for interiors, in your work or as part of a final project, 3D Printing design is an encouraging guide to additive manufacturing within design disciplines. Francis Bitonti gives an insider's view from his design studio on how 3D printing is already shaking up the industry, and where it's likely to go next. Complete with interviews from designers, business owners and 3D-print experts throughout, Bitonti considers whether 3D body scans mean couture for all, how rapid prototyping can change your design method and if 3D printing materials can enhance medical design, amongst other areas of this emerging method of manufacture. This is inspirational reading for the designers of tomorrow.Trade ReviewI highly recommend this book to any designers wanting to delve deeper into the world of 3D printing. It is full of great ideas and case studies, and successfully introduces additive manufacturing from the ground up, sharing the author’s insight, passion and involvement in emerging trends. * Anatol Just, Digital Manufacturing Technical Demonstrator, London Metropolitan University, UK *Francis Bitonti’s luminous book calls attention to the extraordinary opportunities afforded in this dazzling era of disruptive technology, painting a breathtaking portrait of a bold new world. * Evan Douglis, Dean, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA *A consistent investigation of the emerging fields at the crossroads of fashion, technology and architecture... literature is currently lacking a serious and structured book that engages with production technologies and computational design with a precise emphasis on 3D printed fashion. It is a unique instrument for the understanding of the third industrial revolution. I would strongly recommend this book to my students. *proposal review * Niccolo Casas, R.I.S.D. Rhode Island School of Design, USA / Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK *Its greatest strength is that it’s written from the perspective of a fashion insider with the technical chops to create beyond the fashion world. His insight is incomparable and there is no better source than Francis Bitonti to cite this kind of work. I can’t think of any other book that specifically focuses on 3D printing for fashion. This book is necessary for the future of the field, and is also very forward-thinking. Its approach to 3D printing as a challenge to modern-day industrial conventions is also interesting and provides a theoretical background to the functional topics. *proposal review * Antonius Wiriadjaja, Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at New York University, USA *Fills a void in terms of educational texts: there is no direct competitor that I know of on this admittedly focused topic. This is one of the first texts to address emerging design and fabrication techniques in the fashion industry. By coupling both topics, the book merges these formerly discrete activities into a cohesive single process. *proposal review * Fleet Hower, Lecturer, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, USA *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. The materials revolution of 3D printing 2. The future of materials 3. Disruptive distribution 4. Case studies Conclusion

Apple Academic Press Inc. Conservation, Tourism, and Identity of
Book SynopsisThis unique volume aims to promote new models of sustainable management in the field of contemporary mural art. Cultural heritage has become an essential tool for society, stressing the necessity to properly conserve cultural resources in order to maintain a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable development. In this book, the mural "Allegory to Work" by the artist Felipe Seade, located in Uruguay, is used as a case study. The work of Felipe Seade, a prominent political mural artist of the twentieth century, reflects the influence of Mexican heritage and the socio-political themes of that time, which were commonly used by the Social Realism art movement. The authors look at the mural—and its restoration—through the lens of tourism, globalization, and new interest in cultural heritage. The book demonstrates that the restoration should be aware that the perspective of the protagonists must be incorporated in the intervention process. This first-of-its-kind volume brings together historical, ethnographic, tourism, and scientific research that leads to a sustainable project, from the point of view of identity, economy, politics, and society. This volume, with over 50 color illustrations and many black and white photos, will be valuable for college and research libraries, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors in the field of cultural heritage and art as well as those involved in community-based research. Trade Review"Presents the point of view of the conservation and restoration of cultural assets, through the eyes of multiple disciplines: ethnography, art, science, and culture. It is a great work that clearly shows how to address the conservation of artworks in the society in which we live. The book provides the scientific method that professionals of the conservation of cultural heritage may apply to other cases. . . . Easy to read and well written, it has a coherent structure, where an accurate method is proposed, where all the links of the chain of protection of contemporary mural painting are linked, from research and study that includes its evaluation as works of art, up to its study as assets of social interest, combining the strategies and techniques of preventive conservation and museography, deepening in the contributions of science to reach its diffusion. It is a book that unites art and science, theory and practice, linking past and present but looking to the future." —María Dolores Ruiz de Lacanal Ruiz-Mateos, Professor, Department of Culture and History of Visual Arts, Seville University, SpainTable of ContentsIntroduction. Contemporary Uruguayan Mural Painting. Tradition and Relevance. Social Realism in Contemporary Mural Painting. Felipe Seade as the Main Figure of the Uruguayan Social Realism. Apple Academic Press Inc. Hospitality Sales and Marketing: An Evolutionary
Book SynopsisGrouped by general topic, this collection of the best "Sales Clinic" columns in Hotel Management written by Howard Feiertag over the course of 35 years provides an abundance of juicy nuggets of tips, tactics, and techniques for professionals and newbies alike in the hospitality sales field. Readers will take a journey down the road of the development of hospitality sales from the pre-technology era (when knowing how to use a typewriter was a must) to today’s reliance on digital technology, rediscovering that many of the old techniques that are still applicable today.Trade Review“This collection of ‘Sales Clinic’ columns provides an eye-opening account from one of the industry’s true leaders, defining how we operated and how it has evolved over the years. In compiling his many instructive ‘Sales Clinic’ columns, which Howard Feiertag contributed to Hotel Management magazine over a period of 35 years, he has created a real-life narrative of the evolution of hotel sales. Reflecting on earlier years when Howard and I conducted sales calls for our own hotel properties, I find it truly amazing how this business and its professional practices have evolved. For instance, Howard’s first article in January 1980 noted that sales people needed a car and should know how to type. In those days, of course, we communicated with clients and prospects much differently than today—by letter, in person or with a phone call. While many of the time-tested practices for sales engagement remain the same, there’s no question the process has vastly advanced. Having a record of this development is both constructive and valuable.”—Roger J. Dow, President and CEO, U.S. Travel Association“When Howard Feiertag called me in 1979 to lament what he perceived as a lack of focus on sales topics in, Hotel & Motel Management he modeled the best behavior of a hotel sales professional. He was well informed, cordial, respectful, and direct. He identified a need to be filled, and in his own gracious way, asked for the order. How could I have done anything other than give him an opportunity to pen an article for the magazine? Howard’s first column, published in 1980, wa sso well received that I hired him to be a regular contributor. Little did I know that he would retain his column, despite multiple management and ownership changes, 35 years later. His longevity with the magazine is a testament to the wisdom of his words. Imagine how many sales professionals have gained knowledge and received career guidance through Howard’s sage insight and advice. This compilation of Howard’s work assures its legacy and illuminates the timeless tenets of hospitality.”—From the Foreword by Mary Gendron, Former Editor of Hotel Motel Management (now called Hotel Management“I have the great fortune to get to spend every work day with this living legend in the hospitality industry. Now readers can get a taste of what that’s like through this compilation of Howard Feiertag’s sales clinic columns posted in Hotel Magazine over an incredible 35 years. The collection is a tangible representation of the history of hotel and meetings sales and the embodiment of ‘the more things change the more things stay the same.’ As Howard is fond of saying, despite vast changes in technology, the overall hospitality market, and the global marketplace, providing excellent service to people is still at the core of what we do in the hospitality and tourism business. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Chinese Fashion Industry: An Ethnographic
Book SynopsisLess than three decades ago, when the Chinese bought cloth or clothes, they would have had to use a government-issued coupon. Today the Chinese fashion industry is one of the most dynamic in the world - it not only supplies fashions to the increasingly discerning domestic market, but also provides one-third of the clothing sold in the global market. How did this phenomenal transition come about? What can the growth of the Chinese fashion industry tell us about the post-Mao China? What roles do the local and the global play in the dramatic changes? This book offers a historically informed, ethnographically grounded and interpretive analysis of contemporary Chinese fashion and the fashion industry. It examines the interplay of state politics, market forces, local social and cultural factors, and the global political economy, both in the rise of the Chinese fashion industry and in the life and work of Chinese fashion professionals. As the first ethnographic account of the Chinese fashion industry in the post-Mao era, The Chinese Fashion Industry combines first-hand accounts with sophisticated cultural analysis to offer new insights, and will be of interest to students and scholars of fashion, anthropology and China.Trade ReviewThe analyses are timely and important, and Zhao shows conclusively that many of our assumptions about fashion, the market, and modernization do not apply simplistically in the case of China. The book is short and readable and would be of interest to anthropologists working on material culture, globalization, and fashion and would be accessible to students and the general public. -- Jack David Eller * Anthropology Review Database *The book is a “must-read” for anyone who wants to know about China’s fashion scene. Zhao has contributed many unique and interesting insights that are informed by his scholarly background in anthropology. His ability to challenge established theories and traditional views deserves admiration from both scholars and general readers. Another noteworthy point is Zhao’s accessible yet informed writing style. This is not just a book for scholars in the field, but also an interesting text for anyone who wants to understand more about Chinese political, social and economic culture, as it has applied to the fashion industry. -- Christine Tsui, Parsons The New School for Design * The China Journal, No. 72 *Table of ContentsI. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Unravelling the Rag Trade: Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Seven World Cities
Book SynopsisThe garment industry is one of the world's largest industries, yet there are few sustained examinations of its importance to the global economy and the very vital role that immigrant entrepreneurship has played. Focusing on the garment industry in seven world cities -Paris, London, Birmingham, Amsterdam, New York, Miami and Los Angeles- this book tackles the complex relationship between the development of immigrant entrepreneurship and the shift to global, post-industrial urban economies. The interconnections among immigrant entrepreneurs, social networks, market conditions and regulatory matters are thoroughly explored in a comparative way. Starting from the idea that general social, economic and political processes manifest themselves in ever changing, historically specific shapes, the contributors offer intriguing insights into the dynamics of entrepreneurial management against the backdrop of such processes as: the differential spatial impact of economic restructuring; the significance of governance at various levels; and the conditional use of social capital. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this is a must for those wishing to supplement their knowledge in globalization, labour, economics, immigration and the garment industry broadly speaking.Trade Review'Confounding the predictions of prophets and social thinkers alike, the garment industry, that avatar of cut-throat capitalism, 19th century style, hangs on in the new millennium, and by more than a thread. Travel the global cities with the contributors to this book, and one sees why: drawing on the insights of historians, sociologists, and anthropologists, Unravelling the Rag Trade shows how markets, politics, and migration ensure that clothing is still made in the advanced, post-industrial West. A true effort at comparative, not parallel, analysis, this book deserves the attention of anyone interested in migration, urban change, and globalization.'Roger Waldinger, UCLA'An innovative and fascinating comparison of parallel studies on the garment industry in seven major immigration receiving cities ... sets a new standard for research on the ethnic economy, and brings a range of new issues to the fore.'Jeffrey Reitz, University of Toronto'The wealth of detailed information on t

Clarus Press Ltd Brewers and Distillers in Ireland: The Complete
Book SynopsisThe distillation (sometimes illegal) of uisce beatha, poitín and gin has existed in Ireland over many centuries. In 1806, over 25% of the entire production of Irish whiskey was estimated to come from illicit stills. While the process of brewing and distilling has come a long way since the days Molly Gallivan produced her homemade poitín known as Molly’s Mountain Dew in the Kerry Mountains, laws from 1831 still apply to breweries and distilleries today. In 1887, the annual output of whiskey manufactured in Ireland was 10,620,584 gallons. There were many thriving distilleries in Dublin and Cork, and in Tullamore and Kilbeggan, and elsewhere, many of which still survive and are indeed thriving today. As of June 2019, Ireland has twenty-five distilleries in operation, with a further twenty-four either planned or under development. As of 2018, sales of Irish whiskey stood at 10.7 million 9-litres cases, up from 4.4 million cases in 2008, with sales projected to exceed 12 million cases (its historical peak) by 2020. Brewers and Distillers in Ireland: The Complete Licensing Guide discusses all the different types of manufacturers’ licences, the rights and obligations of the manufacturer and how to obtain a manufacturer’s licence from Revenue. The sale of the manufactured product by wholesale is also discussed, as is its retail sale, which was introduced for the first time by the Act of 2018. Differing permitted hours for on-sales and off-sales are discussed, as are offences and penalties. The Intoxicating Liquor (Breweries and Distilleries) Act 2018 has allowed for the first time the retail sale of alcohol (spirits and/or beer) on the premises where such alcohol is manufactured.Table of ContentsPart I: Licences: Manufacturer Chapter 1: Manufacturers’ Licences Chapter 2: Distiller of Spirits Chapter 3: Rectifier of Spirits, Compounder of Spirits Chapter 4: Brewer of Beer for Sale Chapter 5: Maker of Cider or Perry for Sale Chapter 6: Maker for Sale of Sweets Part II: Wholesale Dealing and Retail Sale Chapter 7: Wholesale Dealing Chapter 8: Producer’s Retail Licence Part III: Practical Issues Chapter 9: Offences and Penalties Chapter 10: Practice and Procedure Appendix 1: Forms Appendix 2: The Intoxicating Liquor (Breweries and Distilleries) Act 2018 Appendix 3: Rules of Court
