All the quilts are densely quilted, often with shadow quilting. A wonderful collection of beautiful quilts giving us views of African life we rarely see. It includes a gallery of gorgeous quilts and accompanying photographs of African scenes, showing the flora, fauna, landscapes and faces of Africa that have inspired their quilts. There are 13 quilt projects and a set of instructions for making two very sweet African dolls. The quilts are characteristically full of colour and vibrancy and tend to include lots of appliqué showing images from nature, African scenes and people. Although there are one or two projects involving simple piecing, which are quite contemporary in nature, the book is probably more suitable for fans of appliqué. Now she teams up with felter Toody Cassidy to produce this book on how to combine the crafts to make some stunning pieces. This book is arranged in three sections: felting, stitches and projects. The felting methods covered are wet felting for the backgrounds on which to embroider, and the more detailed needle felting for the smaller details. This is a large format book with plenty of photographs but some of them are a bit small (1½”²) and rather detailed. They are backed up by some good detailed instructions but even a little bigger would have been a lot better. There are three projects in this section (hot water bottle cover, throw and scarf) to give you a feel for making items with the method; a good idea. The middle section covers all the stitches you need and handily starts with list of all thirty-six. The stitches are then shown in large, easy to see drawings containing as many stages as you need to complete them easily. As well as a number of ribbon stitches there are the usual freestyle staples such as chain, blanket and feather but also more unusual ones and how to cover a bead with ribbon. The fourteen projects are also listed with brief descriptions at the start of their section Three of these projects are the felt items made in the first section as well as a bracelet, spectacle case, handbag, clutch bag and more. An imaginative selection, and beautifully adorned with embroidered flowers, some of which look almost real. You can imagine the price these designer items would cost in high end stores, but all can be achieved with some clear written instructions, photographs of varied sizes (some rather small again) and a list of absolutely everything you need. This is laid out clearly in sections with photographs of most of the items including thread and ribbon colors and exactly the right needles. This is a book aimed more at the intermediate needle worker who has some experience with basic sewing and embroidery but a beginning felter will find enough to learn from. With so many projects on the go, sewing supplies to store etc I’m always looking for clever patterns to make to get myself organised. I have in fact made a couple of the author, Aneela Hoey’s, patterns before so when she bought out a whole book of them I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The book is published by Stash Books in America and imported into the UK by Search Press which does make it a little more expensive than the books from British publishers. However, when you realise that Aneela’s patterns cost £7 each to buy, and you get 15 in the book it makes great value for money. Below are the projects you will find in the book. The 15 patterns are split into the following categories in the book: Small Things, Cases and Folios, Pouches and Boxes and Totes. They range from projects you can make in an hour or so to those that take most the day. I suspect most stitchers will find several they want to make. There’s also a tools and basic techniques section at the start of the book to give you the knowledge you need to make the projects. Although there’s a few generic projects like a tomato pincushion, large zippy pouch and drawstring bag most have Aneela’s unique stamp on them. I particularly like the Fold Up Sewing Folio, a great travel sewing kit, The Book and Tool Folio for keeping book, patterns and the tools you need to make the projects together in one place and The See It All Pouch, a transparent project bag. Most the projects are also fat quarter friendly so will make great stash busters. Several use clear vinyl which you can also buy from Search Press here. I’ve made four of the See All Pouches already and plan to make several more, they make ideal extras for Instagram swaps or gifts for stitchy friends. They are quick and easy to make and fat quarter friendly. The only change I’d suggest to the pattern in the book is to use a 12 inch zip, which you could cut down if needed. I found 10 inch zips a little too small and ended up cutting the pouch down on my first one, and then adding zip tabs to extend the zip on my second pouch (the purple one above). The third and fourth pouches I used 12 inch zips and it worked out great. I’m looking forward to making some of the other projects in the book, next on my list are the fabric boxes.
