Batsford Ltd Watercolour Workshop: projects and
Book SynopsisAn inspirational and practical art manual, packed with step-by-step projects. Artist Ann Blockley is renowned for her innovative approach to watercolour painting. Her highly anticipated new book provides a series of workshops demonstrating how to push the boundaries of watercolour, using key techniques to develop your own work and take your paintings to the next level. Ann's easy-to-follow, step-by-step projects demonstrate how some of her most dramatic paintings are created. She describes in detail some of the key techniques used and how you can experiment with alternative methods to create your own interpretations. Finally, her beautiful and inspirational artworks demonstrate how different interpretations of a subject might take an unexpected or unusual direction, and how to make the most of these opportunities. The book moves, with progressively challenging projects, from loose wildflower meadows, textured woodland and rustic rambling walls to atmospheric or semi-abstract landscape corners, all rendered in Ann’s adventurous signature style. Loose, expressive mark-making and unusual techniques include combining water-based paint and ink with granulation medium for dramatic texture, drawing with twigs, using gesso and collage to create unique effects; manipulating paint with materials such as plastic wrap (clingfilm); developing printed marks made using found materials. Following the huge demand for more practical guidance in experimental painting, the book provides plenty of techniques and instruction. Ann’s personal commentary also gives a unique insight into the mind of the artist – ways of looking at your subject, how to explore and experiment – to unlock the potential of your watercolour painting.Trade Review‘This is both a masterpiece and thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring.' -- The Artist * Book Review *

Search Press Ltd Love to Sew: Lagom-Style Accessories
Book SynopsisGet that ‘just right’ balance into your home and life with the 20 fresh Scandinavian-inspired designs in this book. Lagom är bäst, or ‘the right amount is best’ – a Swedish philosophy that fosters the concept of living a simpler and more balanced life. In this book, author and blogger Debbie von Grabler-Crozier shows you how to embrace the ethos of Lagom by teaching you how to sew 20 beautiful accessories for your home that combine Scandi style with simple and practical design. Trade ReviewLagom is a Swedish word that means “just right”. It is all about achieving a good balance in life and part of this is being self-sufficient. Making useful, practical items with what you already have that make life easier is a good place to start. Anybody who sews will already have a stash of fabric they can use and a spot of decluttering is very much in the spirit of lagom. Add in the basics of sewing and you probably already have most of what you need to start right away. I like the way the author tells you not only what to buy but why you need it. There are lots of tips on how to get the best out of tools and supplies and all told in a chatty style as though she was talking to you, a nice touch. Although this book is not aimed at the total beginner it is suitable for somebody with some basic experience under their belt who wants to progress to the next stage. To that end there are clear diagrams of simple stitches and sections on topics like appliqué, making your own bias binding, putting on a pocket and basic freestyle quilting. Armed with this knowledge the projects themselves dispense with staged photographs and merely have a list of written steps, plus lists of materials and tools and several useful tips. Turn to the back and there is a pocket containing the full-sized patterns plus a glossary of all the Swedish terms used. The projects include practical items like a tea cozy, fabric basket, placemats, coasters, mug hug and pin cushion as well as wall hangings, decorations and bunting. Traditional Scandinavian motifs such as elk, Dala horse, tomte, birds etc are featured and there is an emphasis on homespun charm. Fans of all things Nordic will enjoy making these appealing items and filling their home with the essence of lagom. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *20 Scandinavian-inspired projects to sew. Lagom is a Swedish philosophy for balance. Nicely designed projects, but I did think some of them looked for Swedish than others. There are projects to fall in love with here. Use stash and scraps to make simple designs that can transform your home or make perfect gifts. Step by step instructions are accompanied by excellent photos. Full-size templates are included too. You'll find a basic techniques section. Favourite projects for me are the apron, plant pot cover, tote bag, apple kitchen set and the fabulous fabric basket. -- Karen Platt * www.karenplatt.co.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials & tools 8 Essential hand stitches 10 Basic techniques 14 Projects 18 Acknowledgments 80

C & T Publishing Teeny-Tiny Quilts: 35 Miniature Projects - Tips &
Book SynopsisMaster the precision and attention to detail needed for small quilts! In this book, author Donna Lynn Thomas teaches you the skills you need to create accurately pieced quilts in miniature. Choosing fabrics (with emphasis on print size), cutting (with emphasis on accuracy), sewing (with techniques for how to sew small pieces and tiny half-square triangles), pressing, and finishing are all covered in depth. Build your confidence and skills at your own pace with easy-to-follow instructions and a progression of 12 main projects, from easier to more challenging. Plus, each project comes in up to 3 sizes, so you can choose how small you want to go!Trade ReviewI am slowly becoming more and more interested in miniature quilts. I was mesmerised by them at a recent quilt show. It is such a struggle on a domestic machine to wrestle with a gigantic quilt. Yet minis present their own set of challenges. This book presents fabulous images of 35 mini quilts and 12 wonderful projects. You are going to fall in love with doing this. Each pattern has two or three sizes to ease you into getting smaller and smaller. A bit like Alice in Wonderland! Note that if you are making miniature quilts for exhibition, you need to follow the organiser's instructions on size. The book takes you through the basic supplies, fabrics and quilting basics. Useful information is found on triangles, on point, nesting, quarter inch perfect seams and finishing. Even if you are a beginner, there is enough practical information here. The projects are also graded for skill level. The projects are a delight, I love the thought that has gone into this book. The instructions and diagrams are first class. When you move onto the next level, it's all about making the parts smaller. All in all a fabulous primer on mini quilts and one I am happy to recommend. -- Karen Platt * www.karenplatt.co.uk *There are 35 miniature quilts, each come in three sizes; small 4" - 6" blocks; smaller 3" - 4" blocks and smallest 1 1/8" - 3" blocks. A round single hole stitch plate is recommended plus Microtex 70 needles and 60 wt cotton thread. Short stitches i.e. 15 to the inch, prevent the short seams unravelling. A seam ripper to guide, rather than pins, and sewing slowly are also suggested. The first 39 pages are a masterclass in precise piecing, suitable for any block. The instructions and diagrams for cutting and assembling the quilts follow. The amazing miniature quilts are photographed beautifully. A book to awe and inspire. * British Patchwork & Quilting *

Book SynopsisThe perfect fun and relaxing art project for adults and children, this activity pack includes everything needed for readers to make their own Pointillist sticker masterpiece. Containing 14 sticker sheets with over three-thousand colored circular stickers and an 18" x 32" (46 x 82.5 cm) poster "canvas" of colored outlines, readers simply need to match the colored stickers to the outlines found on the poster to recreate the painting. Given that Pointillism relies on the ability of the eye and brain to blend colored dots into a fuller range of tones, it's not necessary to place each sticker on precisely the right outline. As a result, every finished poster will be somewhat different- and extremely satisfying. With a handy folder-style flap that allows for easy storage and transportation of the artwork in progress, Dot Art: Sticker Seurat makes the perfect activity to take on vacation or to unwind after a busy day.
