    10 in stock

Book SynopsisLearn how to create bright and colourful knits using the intarsia method of colour knitting. This clear and simple book is ideal for anyone who wants to learn the art of knitting with different coloured yarns. It guides you effortlessly through the process of choosing colours, preparing yarn bobbins and working out yarn quantities through to the basic intarsia techniques such as joining in new colours and working from charts. At the end of the book there is a mouth-watering collection of 11 gorgeous projects including a fox-themed cushion, an eye-catching chevron scarf and a show-stopping star blanket – all designed with the beginner in mind. Whether you prefer vibrant, multi-coloured knits or more muted tones, this easy-to-follow book will teach you all you need to know to create contemporary colourwork.Trade ReviewIf you've yet to try intarsia colourwork, this book offers all the tips and tricks you'll need to know to achieve neat results. The technical advice is clear and concise, and the 11 projects will help you practise your skills. These include fun cushions, including a fox design, a chevron scarf, a baby blanket sprinkled with stars, and a sweater for women decorated with two flamingo motifs, and sized to fit busts of 32-46in. * The Knitter (Issue 136) *This book is very easy to follow if this is your first time at Intarsia Knitting. Great projects with easy to follow instructions and charts to follow. Highly recommended as a beginner's book for this type of knitting. -- Jackie Lewis * Customer review *I am a seasoned knitter and have done Scandi patterns and similar, but only very limited experience with intarsia as I generally find it a bit confusing to work with several different threads. This book, however, makes it all very clear and easy to follow. It has a step by step guide to all the basics and gives great hints and tips. I also love it that the patterns are written in "full hand" as I originally learned to knit in Germany and - although I CAN do it - still find it somewhat difficult and tedious to follow patterns in English abbreviations. There is a nice collection of pattern charts included, anything from children's items to accessories and home decor. The patterns can be mixed and matched or used as a template for own patterns. All in all it is a very enjoyable and inspiring book and I am already halfway through my first project! -- Petra Beck * Customer review *I have been knitting for a while but am fairly new to intarsia. This book gives a good explanation of how to do it correctly with good tips (before I never really knew what to do with the yarn at the back when I picked up another colour as part of the pattern). I particularly love the flamingo jumper and the fox cushion cover in this book but intend to use the alphabet to make a baby blanket. I would recommend this book to beginners as well as more experienced knitters. -- Vicky Vincent * Customer review *This book is very easy to follow if this is your first time at Intarsia Knitting. Great projects with easy to follow instructions and charts to follow. Highly recommended as a beginner's book for this type of knitting. -- Linda Truswell * Customer review *Brilliant book, great for beginners, loved all the projects and can’t wait to start on one. -- Kitt Harris * Customer review *A very straightforward book with lots of illustration, ideas, and helpful information and tips. Some interesting patterns and lots to inspire a beginner at intarsia to have a go. I can see that some of the techniques used in the book would be transferable to my knitting machine too, although the book has no claim to be for machine knitters. The scarf is at the top of my list and the flamingos are a must too! -- Jenny Pritchard * Customer review *I am an experienced knitter and have knitted intarsia garments over the years - but have done so on instinct - with no guidance. This book is invaluable - covering any questions which may arise in a clear and concise way. The patterns are lovely and the charts clear and easy to understand. My only complaint is that this book wasn't published years ago! -- Diana Allen * Customer review *A great introduction to intarsia knitting. Simple step-by-step instructions and some lovely patterns. I can't wait to get my needles and yarn out. -- Debbie Chambers * Customer review *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION 5 INTARSIA BASICS 6 - What is intarsia knitting? 7 - Useful materials 8 - Choosing yarn 10 - Abbreviations 11 - Preparing yarn 12 - Making a yarn butterfl y 13 - Joining in a new colour 14 - Changing colour on a straight line 15 - Changing colour on a diagonal line 16 - Stranding across a knit row 17 - Stranding across a purl row 18 - Understanding tension (gauge) 19 - Working from charts 20 - Swiss darning 21 - Finishing 22 - Pressing and blocking 23 PROJECTS - Fox pillow 46 - Draught excluder 50 - Tea cosy 54 - Diamond pillow 58 - Door stop 62 - Chevron scarf 66 - Child’s hat 70 - Child’s mittens 74 - Star blanket 78 - Child’s motif sweater 82 - Flamingo motif sweater 90

Book SynopsisUnlike chess or backgammon, tabletop wargames have no single, accepted set of rules. Most wargamers at some point have had a go at writing their own rules and virtually all have modified commercially available sets to better suit their idea of the ideal game or to adapt favourite rules to a different historical period or setting. But many who try soon find that writing a coherent set of rules is harder than they thought, while tweaking one part of an existing set can often have unforeseen consequences for the game as a whole. Now, at last, help is at hand. Veteran gamer and rules writer John Lambshead has teamed up with the legendary Rick Priestley, creator of Games Workshop's phenomenally successful Warhammer system, to create this essential guide for any would-be wargame designer or tinkerer. Rick and John give excellent advice on deciding what you want from a wargame and balancing 'realism' (be it in a historical or a fantasy/sci-fi context) with playability. They discuss the relative merits of various mechanisms (cards, dice, tables) then discuss how to select and combine these to handle the various essential game elements of turn sequences, combat resolution, morale etc to create a rewarding and playable game that suits your tastes and requirements

This final chapter features an inspirational index of over 12’’ 60 HST block designs and encourages the reader to design their own quilts using a single block or combining a few.Trade ReviewThe Half-Square Triangle (HST) is a quilt making staple. Whilst the HST may be a simple block, it yields complex results. A series of 12 patterns start with a beginner friendly, fast and easy design and progress to more challenging designs. The HST is a basic block unit that can be used to make beautiful, timeless quilts. This book shows you the multiple methods for making them (from the slow to the speedy) and combines the HSTs with other pieced blocks that complement the triangle blocks. The final chapter features an inspirational index of over 60 HST block variations and encourages the reader to design their own quilts using a single block design or combining a few. * Sewing World *In this interesting book all the 12 quilts are entirely made with half square triangles (HSTs). There is an introduction to making HSTs, all are made larger than needed and trimmed to the correct size. The designs progress from simple rows of HSTs to a quilt resembling a medallion quilt made from 3 different sized HSTs. Scrappy HSTs can even be made by sewing 2" squares and small rectangles of fabric together to form squares. A gallery of 60 blocks shows HSTs in different arrangements. There are black and white grids to photocopy and colour. An original approach to a simple block. * British Patchwork and Quilting *Jeni takes the maths out of quilting and makes it easier for you to create amazing designs with half-square triangles. After she has shared her cutting menus so that you can create without having to do the maths, she then builds on this with 12 beautiful step-by-step designs. Each of the designs is presented in it's finished format. You are given details of how the look was created. You are then taken through the materials required, the cutting required and how to assemble the HST's. From there you are given details of how to add the borders. At each stage there are pictures to guide you on your way. I love the modern designs and colours that have been used in each of the projects. However these are only guides so you can make your own look for your own taste. Jeni takes you through everything you need to know about colour & scale. The book is jam packed with different designs that you can use with your HST's. As a newbie to quilting I found this invaluable. I love the fact that you can make the projects or use the information to create your own designs. I love the section on Patchwork Play. It's so much fun and seems such an easy method to create a unique quilt of your own. I also love the fact that you get projects to be able to try new methods out. The block party is filled with an amazing array of block designs. It has so many designs the only problem you might have is trying to pick which blocks you want to start off with. I think this book is one I'll be using time and again. I can't wait to get started on my project and seeing how mine comes out. My fingers are crossed and I am very hopeful that it will turn out well. I am sure it will with all the clear and easy to understand. * Crochet Addict UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction Techniques - Traditional Construction Method - 4-at-a-time Construction Method - 8-at- a-time Construction Method - Trimming Chapter 1: Colour - The affects of colour and fabric choices - Colour basics - Fabric placement quilt pattern - Warm/cool value quilt pattern - Black/white + colour quilt pattern Chapter 2: Size Matters - The affects of scale - Super sized quilt pattern - Two different sized HSTs quilt pattern - Three different sized HSTs quilt pattern Chapter 3: Patchwork Play - Incorporating other elements into a HSTs - String HST quilt - Patchwork HST quilt - Scrappy QST quilt Chapter 4: Half-Square Triangles Only - Index of different 60 HST blocks - Single block quilt pattern - Quarter block quilt pattern - 32 block sampler quilt pattern Chapter 5: Tools & Quilting Basics - Tools specific to HSTs - General quilting tools - Basic quilting techniques Resources & Acknowledgements

  • Moche Fineline Painting From San Jose De Moro

Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA Moche Fineline Painting From San Jose De Moro

Book SynopsisMoche civilization flourished on the north coast of Peru from AD 200 to 800. Although the Moche had no writing system, they left a vivid artistic record of their beliefs and activities on intricately painted ceramic vessels, several thousand of which are scattered in museums and private collections throughout the world today. Unfortunately, nearly all were looted by grave robbers so their origin and context are unknown. In recent years, however, through a combination of archaeological excavation and stylistic analysis, it has been possible to identify more than 250 painted vessels from the site of San Jose de Moro. To date, this is the largest sample of Moche art from a single place and time. Thus it provides a unique opportunity to identify a distinct sub-style of Moche ceramics, and to assess its range of artistic and technological variation. Moreover, within the sample it is possible to identify multiple paintings by 18 different artists, thus elucidating the range of subject matter that an artist would paint, as well as the variation in the way he would portray the same scene. By discussing and illustrating more than 200 painted vessels from San Jose de Moro, this volume provides insights about a community of ancient Peruvian potters who shared a distinctive painting style and left a fascinating record of their achievement.

Book SynopsisEndgames with kings, bishops, knights, and pawns are generally considered among the most complex and can seem quite bewildering to improving players. Book SynopsisThis book deals with the process of choosing and using a milling machine and its accessories. In addition to the machine itself, the accessories include the cutters, cutter chucks, workpiece clamps, vices, angle plates, dividing heads, rotary tables, boring heads and other minor items. The content is divided into three main sections. Firstly, it describes what machines and accessories are available and covering each one in detail. The author explains which are essential and which can be obtained when the workshop activity eventually demands one. There are also suggestions on how the equipment chosen should be installed. The usage of each machine and accessory is covered for all but their most complex uses. Typically, using the rotary table and the dividing head are both described to a detail sufficient for the majority of uses that will surface in the home workshop. The third section deals with the actual machining process, covering the choice of the cutter for the task in hand, the speeds to use and how the direction of the feed relative to the cutter rotation is vitally important. A less-understood feature of milling, back cutting, is also explained. The subject of sharpening milling tools is briefly covered and a simple off hand grinder fixture that will bring new life to a used end mill is described.Table of ContentsChoosing the Machine.
