MIT Press Cloud Between Paris and Tehran
Book SynopsisA theoretical examination of veiling, shame, and modesty in the films of the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami through the lenses of Islamic philosophy and Lacanian psychoanalysis. In Cloud: Between Paris and Tehran, Joan Copjec examines the films of the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. The key to these films, she argues, lies in the image of a fragile yet sheltering tree that appears in several of his films. This simple image depicts a central concept of Islamic philosophy, which is known as the ?Cloud? or the ?Imaginal World.? It designates the place out of which all the things of this world manifest themselves and ?covers,? or veils, that which must remain hidden. The concept of the Cloud plays a significant role in defining: 1) the unique nature of the Islamic God, who is not a creator or father; 2) the nature of the image, which assumes a priority and a greater power than it is elsewhere accorded; and 3) the nature of modesty, shame, and sexuality.Copjec walks her readers through the thicket of Islamic philosophy while demonstrating how its abstract concepts produce what audiences see on screen. The most ambitious aspect of the book lies in its attempt to demonstrate the inheritance by psychoanalysis of a new notion of knowledge, or gnosis, formulated by Muslim thinkers, who radically redefined the relation between body and thought.

Manchester University Press Aesthetic Theory and the Video Game
Book SynopsisThis book analyses video games like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil as aesthetic objects. Drawing on philosophical theories of art from Kant to Ranciere, it focuses on what games feel like to players and argues that their appeal can only be adequately understood by relating them to developments in contemporary art and recent cultural history.Trade Review"An established scholar of the sociology of gaming and computers, Kirkpatrick (Univ. of Manchester, UK) argues video games are autonomous cultural forms that should be considered art.""Kirkpatrick positions the aesthetics of video games in interactivity, outside the traditional realm of formal or literary representation.""......adds a distinct, if rather conservative, perspective on video game play to the burgeoning field of game studies."I have yet to encounter a book as extensive and thought-provoking as Aesthetic Theory and the Video Game....Kirkpatrick’s book is an illuminating exploration of how a players body and a game intertwine, or how, “a generation of young men have grown up dancing with their hands.”There is no doubt that this book is important: for the academic theorization of gameplay, aesthetic theory, and cultural studies in its broadest, interdisciplinary or ‘indisiciplined’ manifestations… Rancière is one of a plethora of writers with whom Kirkpatrick artfully weaves propositions and readings of games to accumulate a coherently mapped theory of gaming as an aesthetic cultural practice... I have yet to encounter a book as extensive and thought provoking as Aesthetic Theory and the Video Game. You’ll never look at a controller the same way again after Kirkpatrick explains how we’ve been conditioned to use carefully designed blobs of plastic to influence an image. -- .Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroduction1. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc David Bowie and the Art of Music Video
Book SynopsisThe first in-depth study of David Bowie's music videos across a sustained period takes on interweaving storyworlds of an iconic career. Remarkable for their capacity to conjure elaborate imagery, Bowie's videos provide fascinating exemplars of the artistry and remediation of music video. When their construction is examined across several years, they appear as time-travelling vessels, transporting kooky characters and strange story-world components across time and space. By charting Bowie's creative and collaborative process across five distinct phases, David Bowie and the Art of Music Video shows how he played a vital role in establishing music video as an artform. Filling a gap in the existing literature, this book shines a light on the significant contributions of directors such as Mick Rock, Stanley Dorfman and David Mallet, each of whom taught Bowie much about how to use the form. By examining Bowie''s collaborative process, his use of surrealist strategies and his integration of avant-garde art with popular music and media, the book provides a history of music video in relation to the broader fields of audiovisual media, visual music and art.Trade ReviewIn this wonderful book, Lisa enables us to see and hear the remarkable assemblages that we find in David Bowie’s time-travelling audio-visual work. Art and culture, the aesthetics of fashion and performance, and the politics of race and otherness, are the inter-planetary orbits that are deftly explored through close examination of Bowie’s television, promotional and music video performances. Bowie emerges as a figure who remade himself and recast the artforms that he visited – always alien-like, in flux, thirsting for water that would replenish him and us. A must-read addition to the literature on the Starman who killed and saved the world. * Sean Redmond, Professor of Film and Television, Deakin University, Australia *In David Bowie and the Art of Music Video Lisa Perrott takes us on an entertaining yet scholarly journey through David Bowie’s early music videos, from the pre-fame promos of Love You ‘Till Tuesday in 1969, all the way up to 1983’s global smash Let’s Dance. With thoughtful and satisfying analysis, she drills down through layers of representation and reference, revealing new insights into Bowie’s creative practice. Perrott’s book looks at Bowie’s work with music video as the interconnected, interdisciplinary, richly nuanced body of work that it is. She makes a compelling case for the cultural and scholarly significance of music video as a collaborative, transmedial artform, worthy of deep study. * Leah Kardos, Senior Lecturer in Music, Kingston University, UK, and author of Blackstar Theory (Bloomsbury, 2022) *It’s been a long time coming, but the wait is over! Finally, a book-length study about the music videos of David Bowie. Lisa Perrott has written a comprehensive and thought-provoking study of the music videos of Bowie from the 1969-83 (the sequel, dealing with the later videos is being published this year). This is a significant work that examines the role Bowie played as an avant-garde creator and collaborator who transformed (and helped create) the music video into an art form that generated a dialogue with music, theatre, film, dance, and other artistic forms. The writing is engaging and accessible and Perrott takes the reader on a journey through the cultural, social, and artistic processes that fuelled the mind of this larger-than-life figure and his various personas. It was an utter pleasure diving into the deep analysis of classics such as Space Oddity, Jean Genie, and Ashes to Ashes, while also reading about the intertextual threads that ran across many of the videos across time. This is a must read. * Angela Ndalianis, Professor of Screen and Entertainment Media, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia *Table of ContentsList of figures Acknowledgements Preface 1. Book SynopsisSet to generate and influence discussions in the field for years to come, this is an encyclopaedic work on the ever-evolving genre of poetry film. It will set the benchmark for all subsequent works on the subject, being the first book of its kind. Poetry films are a genre of short film, usually combining the three main elements: the poem as verbal message; the moving film image and diegetic sounds; and additional non-diegetic sounds or music, which create a soundscape. This book examines the formal characteristics of the poetic in poetry film, film poetry and video poetry, particularly in relation to lyric voice and time. Provides an introduction to the emergence and history of poetry film in a global context, defining and debating terms both philosophically and materially. Examines the formal characteristics of the poetic in poetry film, particularly in relation to lyric voice and time. Includes interviews, analysis and a rigorous and thorough investigation of the poetry film from its origins to the present. This is a very important, groundbreaking work on film poetry. The ideas discussed here are of great importance, and the diversity and breadth of the volume is especially impressive and very useful. This book brings together in one place crucial ideas and information for practitioners, students and academics, and is clearly and accessibly written. Including over 40 contributors and showcasing the work of an international array of practitioners, this will be an industry bible for anyone interested in poetry, digital media, filmmaking, art and creative writing, as well as poetry filmmakers. It explores working practices, processes of collaboration and the mechanisms which make these possible. It also reveals the network of festivals disseminating and theorizing poetry film and presents a compelling bibliography. This is the most incisive and complete analysis of filmic poetry to date. It is poised to become a major text in the field. Essential reading for academics teaching poetry filmmaking, moving image, film, media and media poetry, writing and art. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in those fields. Great potential for textbook adoption. Also relevant to poets, filmmakers, visual artists, graphic artists and theorists, filmmakers, screenwriters, art historians, philosophers, cultural commentators, arts journalists.Trade Review'Sarah Tremlett’s The Poetics of Poetry Film is a unique and extraordinary contribution to this vibrant field of expression. Her landmark volume elegantly articulates the conceptual foundations, language, grammar, and vocabulary of poetry film and its cognate forms; delivers a concise and incisive history of the genre, and introduces students, practitioners and scholars to the field’s contemporary pioneers, methods of making, and varied narrative forms. Laden with rich and provocative illustration and example, The Poetics of Poetry Film functions as Bible, Guide to the Perplexed, and indispensable reference, fluidly integrating interviews with and notes by forty contributors into a coherent and beautifully structured progression. This book—a wonder in its variety, complexity, and ambition—is a superb read.' -- Marc Zegans, poet, poetry film and immersive theatre artist'The sentence on the cover says it all for me. Hard to believe it’s been more than 50 years since Sympathies of War, my first videopoem. I’m thankful that a book like this, the first of its kind, of its sheer scope, finally exists and humbled that I had a part to play in the flowering of a new genre of poetry. No one better than the indefatigable doyenne of videopoems, my good friend Sarah Tremlett to make it come true.' -- Tom Konyves, videopoet and theorist'This is an encyclopaedic, groundbreaking manuscript on an area of film production that definitely needs more attention, and stands to be the book to surpass for quite some time; the author knows her territory intimately ... It is the most incisive and complete analysis of filmic poetry to date; it’s very diverse, includes women, minorities and transgender filmmakers, and Tremlett's descriptions of the films, and the intent of the filmmaker poets, and is both accessible and clearly written. This is a sharp, up to the minute manuscript on the bleeding edge of film criticism. ... A book exploding with dazzling, evocative images and trenchant analysis.' -- Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, Willa Cather Professor of English & Film Studies, University of Nebraska–Lincoln'This is a gem of a book. It brings together in one place crucial ideas and information for practitioner and academic. I wish very much that it had been available when I found my way into videopoetry ... Considering the scope of the subject matter, what has been achieved here in terms of clarifying and anatomizing is remarkable.' -- Dr Meriel Lland, writer, photographer and film-artist‘I loved reading this book. The Poetics of Poetry Film is an amazing resource for scholars and everyone interested in contemporary poetry.’ -- Dr Rebecca Kosick, Senior Lecturer in Translation and co-director of the Bristol Poetry Institute in the School of Modern Languages, University of Bristol'An exhaustive study of Video Poetry by the remarkable Sarah Tremlett and over 40 contributors! I was fortunate enough to have read with Sarah at the Bury Text Festival and found her work to be amazing. She also appears in an issue of Ekleksographia edited by Judith Skillman. I recognize some names among the pioneers of the movement, including the Polypoet Enzo Minarelli. Congrats on this fantastic book! This is really wonderful!' -- Jesse Glass, American poet, artist, folklorist and Professor of American Literature at Meikai University, Japan.'Sarah Tremlett’s The Poetics of Poetry Film: Film Poetry, Videopoetry, Lyric Voice, Reflection offers a breathtaking range of glimpses at the historical flashpoints, formal anatomy, and major and minor contemporary makers and trends in what Tremlett alternately calls film poems and poetry film (and their sister, video poetry). [...] The book is impressively comprehensive in its representation and acknowledgment of the wide diversity of formal experiments and elements that constitute the history and present of “poetry film,”. [...] The Poetics of Poetry Film should serve as an important resource for scholars and filmmakers interested in contemporary aesthetic trends in this interdisciplinary field. It also offers an important archive of festivals and conferences on poetry film through its inclusion of interviews with festival organizers and writings by contemporary filmmakers working at the intersection of poetry and film.' -- Rebecca A. Archaeopress The Past as a Digital Playground: Archaeology,
Book SynopsisThe Past as Digital Playground: Archaeology, Virtual Reality, and Video Games collects the contributions to a two-day conference which illustrate a digital project developed at the Archaeological and Technological Park of Poggibonsi (Siena, Tuscany), where Virtual Reality and an educational video game are being used to enhance the archaeological content deriving from the excavation of the medieval site. In recent decades, digital technologies have pervaded every aspect of the production of archaeological knowledge, from data collection to analysis and interpretation, to interaction with the public. The increasing convenience of 3D and interactive technologies has led to a proliferation of digital tools (VR, AR, mobile applications) used to communicate the past in a more engaging way, offering the public an experience that takes place largely outside of the traditional channels. Alongside the experience at Poggibonsi, the book also gathers important contributions originating from other Italian and international case studies in the fields of digital technologies applied to archaeological heritage.Table of ContentsIndice ; Introduzione – Stefano Bertoldi, Samanta Mariotti ; (Re)living Vindolanda: Designing Educational Computer Games for Outdoor Environments – Barbara Birley, Richard Davison, Claire Stocks ; Virtual Neapolis. University of Wales Press Queer for Fear: Horror Film and the Queer
Book SynopsisQueer for Fear analyses the relationship queer people have to horror film, building upon decades of theory that previously emphasised horror’s queerness as being subtextual, allegorical and figurative. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary empirical study of the LGBTQ+ community not only offers the first inclusive understanding of the horror-loving queer spectator’s opinions, habits and tastes, but also evidences how and why queers have a distinctive relationship to horror. Leveraging original survey data, in-depth oral histories and theory, Petrocelli evidences that queer people have ontological connections to the horror genre, and concludes that horror is queer to the queer spectator. This study also establishes that queer spectators actively engage with horror to work through their trauma, knowingly have a camp relationship to horror, and joyously commune through horror screenings featuring drag performance. Queer for Fear is an overdue contribution to the fields of queer, film, horror, trauma, camp and live cinema studies.

Dancing Foxes Press A.K. Burns: Negative Space
Book SynopsisChronicling an epic multimedia project 10 years in the making, A.K. Burns’ first monograph grapples with climate change, community and sociopolitical agency Deploying science fiction, material feminism, eco-anarchism, queer theory and technoscience, New York–based artist A.K. Burns (born 1975) explores the fraught relationships between humanity and nature in an epic multimedia work, Negative Space (2015–23). This nonlinear allegory provokes questions about marginalized bodies, environmental fragility and technology. Developed as a cycle of four video installations, Negative Space imagines new relationships to the spaces we occupy and the impact of our bodies in these spaces through imagery, research and critical and creative writings. Leuven University Press Francis Alys. The Nature of the Game
Book SynopsisThe first multidisciplinary analysis of one of the most impactful and popular contemporary artworks of recent years. In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children’s Games, a series of works by artist Francis Alÿs (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Alÿs and his collaborators Félix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children’s stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children’s Games. It includes an interview with Francis Alÿs and Rafael Ortega, a series of essays by well-known scholars and art critics, curatorial statements, and a logbook related to the presentation of Children’s Games at the Venice Biennale of 2022.Contributors: Francis Alÿs (artist), Gerard-Jan Claes (filmmaker, artistic director of Sabzian), Tim Ingold (anthropologist, University of Aberdeen), Zeynep Kubat (art historian, curator and writer), Karen Lang (art historian, Royal Society of Arts), Rafael Ortega (artist), Rodrigo Perez de Arce (architect, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile), Juan Martín Pérez García (Network for the Rights of Children in Mexico (REDIM), Giulio Piovesan (journalist and photographer), John Potter (media education, University College London), Virginia Roy (curator at the University Museum of Contemporary Art of the National Autonomous University of Mexico), Stéphane Symons (professor of philosophy, KU Leuven), Hilde Teerlinck (Han Nefkens Foundation /curator of the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale 2022).Ebook available in Open Access.Table of ContentsPrefaceFrancis Alÿs. Phaidon Press Ltd Internet_Art: From the Birth of the Web to the
Book SynopsisA leading figure in the world of networked culture explores the artists and events that defined the mass medium of our time Since 1989, the year the World Wide Web was born, the art world has grappled with the rise of networked culture. This unprecedented survey of the artists and innovators in this area from 1989 to today is interwoven with the personal narrative of one of the leading voices on the digital world. In this book, Omar Kholeif, whose prolific career parallels the growth of the internet, tells the story of this mass medium and how it has fostered new possibilities for artists, both analog and digital. The book showcases work spanning a range of media from legendary artists including Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Nam June Paik, Heather Phillipson, and Wu Tsang. Tracing the key artists and innovators from the emergence of browser-based art to the dawn of NFTs, this is a tale for the present and the future.Trade Review ‘A deep dive into the moments that have defined art within the digital age.’ – HYPEBEAST‘Omar Kholeif’s INTERNET_ART explores how our cyberreality has shaped creative consumption since the 1960s. Alienation from the self, in Kholeif’s telling, is art’s new crisis. I await [their] sequel 20 years hence.’ – New York Times‘Not a conventional survey in any sense, [Internet_Art] zips between Roy Ascott’s computer-based art of the early ’80s and the recent NFT craze of the past two years, stopping at various points in between to consider works [by] many other giants of the trajectory.’ – ARTnews‘[Internet_Art] tells the story of digital culture as never before told ... Dr. Kholeif successfully manages to spotlight the underrepresented voices in digital culture, particularly those who documented it [since] 1989.’ – Hypebae ‘Informative and fast-moving … Kholeif’s takes on how art can change (and be changed by) technology are shrewd. Art historians and those interested in contemporary art will find much to gain.’ – Publishers Weekly‘An accessible and enjoyable experience … Kholeif is your personal guide on a fast-paced voyage through time and cyberspace. The content in Internet_Art is thorough, comprehensive and up-to-the-minute. No stone is left unturned.’ – Aesthetica‘This will be an enlightening, intellectual ride through how the most important technological development of our time fuelled and finessed art around the world. For others, it will be a David Foster Wallace doom scroll, navel-gazing at its own anxiety spiral.‘ – New York Journal of Books'Kholeif makes a compelling case for paying special attention to artists’ voices as this great debate [about the internet] unfolds.' – Los Angeles Review of Books‘Compulsively readable and relatable. Internet_Art is a remarkable feat—a field guide and a meta-exhibition catalogue of human history. It is a rightfully gilded portrait of our less-than-gilded era.’ – Prof. Bruce Jenkins, Professor of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and co-author, Andy Warhol Film Catalogue Raisonne‘In Internet_Art , Omar Kholeif expertly traces the history of art in the networked age. Revealing new insights throughout, the author examines the work of those who contextualize and proliferate art—the individuals who far too often are overlooked.’ – Jay Mollica, Director of Digital Engagement, Perez Art Museum, Miami ‘Part memoir, part social history, this book is akin to a piece of travel writing through the internet, meeting a host of artists who challenge and make visible what the internet is, or could be. The World Wide Web is a territory we all surf, but have not experienced with the specificity or breadth of Omar Kholeif’s very personal account. There are caleidoscopic jewels all over this.’ – Khalid Abdalla, actor, activist and filmmaker‘More than a history of internet art, Kholeif has woven a vivid autobiographical tapestry. In the patterns and cultural shifts of the past three decades, they find the beauty and bravery that marked this era of experimentation.’ – Prof. Kate Crawford, author of Atlas of AI‘Outstandingly charming and insightful.’ – Prof. Roy Ascot, Artist; Founding President of the Planetary Collegium, Emeritus Professor of Technoetic Arts Plymouth University, and the De Tao Master of Technoetic Arts at the DeTao Masters Academy, Shanghai‘Kholeif has authored a memoir that seeks to challenge perceptions of representation as much as a field guide to the world of all things digital.’ – Osman Yousefzada, Artist and author of The Go-Between ‘There's no way A.I. could have written this book. It took Kholeif's genuine intelligence and their broad knowledge of recent history to make sense of something that most often feels unstructured and random.’ – Douglas Coupland, Author of Generation X, JPod, and Bit Rot‘Omar Kholeif's innovative act of storytelling brings a subterranean history of artists' endeavors to light, revealing the basis for and pointing towards the future of the most relevant themes in contemporary culture. An absolutely essential guide.’ – Trevor Paglen, Artist, author, and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow‘An essential guide and companion to what will undoubtedly be our century's most transformative journey. A gifted writer and cultural commentator, Kholeif's personal odyssey gives form and insight to the contours of a cultural landscape whose further shores have yet to be defined.’ – Neville Wakefield, Writer, Curator; Artistic Director, Desert X‘Not a standard compendium ... but an altogether odder, more intimate affair … Kholeif is adept and entertaining at showing internet art not as a school of art but work of any type characterised by its ‘knowing awareness of the networked nature of our collective culture (be that cat memes or revolutions, fake news or Twitter mobs.’ – Oliver Basciano, Art Quarterly
