Jessica Kingsley Publishers Extraordinary Chinese Medicine: The Extraordinary
Book SynopsisExploring the relationship between the eight extraordinary vessels, and the zangfu and extraordinary organs, this ground-breaking book provides a new way of looking at the deep connection between the flow of qi through the primary channels, the placement of the confluent points of the extraordinary vessels along the primary channel system, and Daoist conceptions of the evolution of consciousness. He emphasizes the importance of the dai mai channel in integration. The author points to direct relationships between the primary channels, the extraordinary channels, and the zangfu and extraordinary organs which demonstrate a deep, underlying, and continuous connection between the individual and their environment, a continuous connection to Heaven above and Earth below, and, perhaps most importantly, an underlying drive of the channel systems to continually, experientially bring us back to the transcendent unity that we are always a part of, the natural state. This book will enlarge the perspective of Chinese medicine practitioners, and martial artists, and prompt new approaches to treatment.Trade ReviewThis is a valuable book for Chinese Medicine and qigong practitioners. As a Chinese Medicine and qigong practitioner myself, I felt that not enough attention was paid to the Extraordinary Vessels and Organs in my university degree course. The author does a great job in restoring some of the spiritual and Daoist concepts back into Chinese Medicine. I recommend this book to Chinese Medicine students and practitioners because I am sure it will deepen their understanding and expand their view of Chinese Medicine, restoring some of its lost depth. -- Kenneth Morgan * Medical Qigong Education Centre *Table of Contents1. This book is certainly the best one I have had the pleasure to read and assess. You will not be disappointed. * Positive Health Online *I found the overall layout of the book very pleasing. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Essential Teachings of Sasang Medicine: An
Book SynopsisSasang Medicine, the only complete Korean medical system and philosophy, is made accessible in English for the first time through this annotated translation of Lee Je-ma's foundational text, the Dongeui Susei Bowon. Including a philosophical exploration of human emotions and constitutions, and comprehensive explanation of the Four Constitutions and their effects on health, the Dongeui Susei Bowon offers a unique approach to any health concern. It also includes examples of specific cases and how to apply over one hundred herbal formulae for effective treatment according to the energetic requirements of each Sasang constitution.Rigorous translation, explanatory introduction explaining the relationship to and differences from Chinese medicine, detailed footnotes, and commentary by a practicing doctor of Korean medicine fully elucidates Lee Je-ma's text for a thorough understanding of Sasang Medicine.Trade ReviewThe Sasang method was developed by a Korean scholar named Lee Je-ma, who published a single medical text entitled Dongeui Susei Bowon. The product of prolonged study and several years of extensive research, Gary Wagman's annotated translation of this text is a significant accomplishment. Despite the numerous differences between the East and the West, this translation is the culmination of a dedicated effort to bridge cultural dissimilarities while preserving the essence of Lee Je-ma's teachings. -- Kim Man San, PhD - Director of the Institute of Classic Asian Studies and Professor of Asian Philosophy, Chungnam State University, Daejeon, Republic of KoreaI would like to wholeheartedly congratulate Gary Wagman on the completion of his English translation of the Dongeui Susei Bowon. While reviewing the manuscript, I reflected on how much effort, enthusiasm, and time this translation must have taken to complete. It is my sincere hope that Sasang Medicine will spread to every corner of the earth, calming and healing the bodies and minds of more and more people. -- Hwang Minwoo, KMD, PhD, Professor, College of Korean Medicine, Kyunghee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea, and Clinical Doctor, Sasang Medicine Clinic, Kyung Hee University Hospital at GangdongDr Wagman has produced a text of unusual clarity about a tradition of medicine that can appear opaque and difficult to westerners. Lee Je-ma was a great philosopher as well as the pioneer of Sa-Sang medicine. Wagman has distilled both aspects of his work. -- Professor Denis Noble, Balliol College, Oxford, author of The Music of LifeThe Essential Teachings of Sasang Medicine is a brilliant piece of work! Not only is this book comprehensive and practical, but it is written to help the reader cultivate the proper balance of mind and body. An exciting feature of this book is specific cases showing how to apply over one hundred herbal formula for effective treatment. -- Sande McDaniel, Publisher of Oriental Medicine JournalEvery ancient culture developed unique versions of medical practice. Each included components from religion, natural history and often remedies derived from animals and plants. Almost every internal and external disease known to humans possessed an anatomical (internal and external) remedy providing relatively effective approaches to assist the sick. Now we move forward in time with a focus on the merits of Korean approaches to treatment and healing. Gary Wagman practices Sasang Medicine with distinctive experience: he has created a comprehensively annotated translation of the Dongeui Susei Bowon original text of Sasang Medicine written by Lee Je-ma. Based on ancient teachings of Asian philosophy, Sasang Medicine is now noticed in modern research as it relates to genetic, biological, and behavioral sciences. Lee Je-ma's original text, and Gary Wagman's precisely annotated translation, reveal an insightful doctor and scholar who saw that the human body is an integrative biological system deeply influenced by constitutionally-specific physiological and psychological traits. Supporting his scholarly expertise Gary has lived in Korea for eight years, allowing him devotion to the Korean language and analyses of Sasang Medicine. He monitored a collaborative study between KIOM (Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine) via Dr. Kim Jong Yeal and the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland Oregon where he lives. Not resting, Gary has written a book entitled Your Yin Yang Body Type and other relevant publications defining etiological approaches to Sasang Medicine. Gary has now translated Dongeui Susei Bowon, an amalgam of Sasang philosophy, theory, diagnostic criteria and clinical application. With a firm theoretical basis and numerous clinical applications, the Sasang method offers a unique approach that could potentially narrow gaps between Eastern and Western medicine. -- Edwin L. Cooper, Distinguished Professor of neurobiology, UCLA and Founding Editor-in-Chief, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine JournalThe Essential Teachings' contains more than 100 herbal formulae (...) as with many ancient medicinal texts, some of the formulae are no longer available (...) but nonetheless worthy of study by the serious student or practitioner of herbal medicine. -- John E Smith * The Herbalist *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Intuitive Acupuncture
Book SynopsisThe role of intuition is seldom identified in acupuncture training as one of the keys to effective practice. John Hamwee here explores its paramount importance in diagnosis and treatment, showing how development of the intuitive sense, and its appropriate use in the treatment room, is vital to building the most effective individual practice.Through discussion of theory, clinical example, and the experiences of leading acupuncturists, the author shows how intuition, or the grasping of subliminal clues, can be developed, based on the practitioner's growing `storeroom' of clinical experience and why it is so useful for this to become a conscious and rigorously examined process. He discusses the process of testing intuition against objective observation of the patient, and how an intuitive leap can provide a shortcut across an innumerable series of diagnostic steps, and lead to diagnostic and treatment decisions that make complete sense of the observable phenomena. He suggests that learning to trust the intuitive faculty, while still fully interrogating conclusions, is the basis of better patient outcomes and significantly advanced practice. This thoughtful and engaging book will be one that acupuncturists will want to read and reread, and will speak to all therapists, counsellors, and health practitioners.Trade ReviewWe need more books like this. The author uses his considerable expertise and intelligence to explore aspects of the therapeutic relationship that are seldom discussed. Chapters entitled 'Intuition', 'Attention', 'Relationship' and 'Cultivation' give a sense of the kinds of issues that are crucial to the work of all physicians but are so hard to teach or even to discuss. This is an important book for any acupuncturist who wants to think more deeply about the work that they do. -- Peter Mole, Dean of the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and author of 'Acupuncture for Body, Mind and Spirit'This is a courageous and important book. It looks at what cannot be measured or analysed in medicine, Western or Eastern, and in life in general. And it looks at it because it is essential to all healing. John Hamwee shows us that Intuition, or 'sudden knowing' profoundly informs a therapeutic intervention. It can open a window, and initiate in the patient "the will to live" in the broadest sense. The book shows us how to grow our own intuitive sensibilities, step by step, and how this will enliven our practices, and our lives. His work is richly illustrated by stories from his own years in practice, and from wide ranging research in Chinese classics, western medicine, science and philosophy. Above all it is very accessible, not only to acupuncturists but to all those interested in healing. -- Isobel Cosgrove, acupuncture practitioner and teacherOne of the most valiant endeavors of this book, and one of the best reasons to read it, is its attempt to confer some validity on this most unscientific of concepts: to make intuition overt, instead of something we covertly, slightly shamefacedly, indulge in our treatment rooms. -- Karen Charlesworth, BAcC member * Acu. *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments. Shanghai Press Your Guide to Holistic Beauty: Using the Wisdom
Book SynopsisTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) approaches the concept of achieving and maintaining beauty from the inside out. A tree can't have beautiful foliage unless it has a strong root system, and likewise the human body can't show beautiful radiance unless its internal organs and systems are kept healthy and nourished. This exemplifies the core concept of yi nei yang wai—to nourish the inside so it shines outside. In the West, exterior conditions such as wrinkles are often just seen as a mark of the ravages of time, and are treated topically and, therefore, superficially. TCM believes these conditions communicate a message about something happening inside the body. For example, spots or wrinkles that appear on a spleen meridian line may indicate dysfunction of that organ, and when the spleen is nourished and rebalanced, it can help correct problems such as edema, cellulite and sagging skin. Therefore the TCM approach is holistic, striving to solve the root cause, looking at the particular organ system that is affected and bringing it back in harmony through diet and other natural means. By introducing vital TCM concepts—such as the Five Elements, qi, meridians and organ systems—this book will help you unlock the secrets to optimizing natural beauty. Using a traditional Chinese approach you can improve your skin, hair and nails, increase fitness, help stop aging, and so much more.

TCM is a popular method of treatment -- is actually called Chinese Drug Therapy in China because it uses a wide variety of substances and therapeutic modalities. Plant, animal and mineral substances are all included in the Materia Medica of Chinese Drug Therapy. The earliest uses date back at least 4000 years to the Shang dynasty. Characters representing medicinal substances have been found carved into oracular bone fragments. These were used diagnostically by the Wu Shaman of this time. The earliest materia Medica, the Sheng Nung Peng Tsao, recorded over 10,000 medicinal substances. While there seems to be an almost unlimited amount of medicinal substances, the most commonly used number around 200. Watkins Media Limited The Wisdom of Mental Illness: Shamanism, Mental
Book SynopsisWritten for those who are experiencing mental illness, or whose loved ones are going through such episodes, or who are mental wellbeing practitioners, this is a guide to the potentially transformational experience of that which we label mental illness. It explores the ancient concept of the "shamanic sickness", whereby the prospective shaman underwent many years of mental distress as part of their initiation, and looks at what this can teach us about mental health. It argues that, in some cases, what we seek to medicate could actually be a calling to a path of service and healing. The book also explores our cultural biases around mental illness. What we define as pathological, many cultures see as a sign of being inspired and in touch with greater powers. It looks at our uneasy relationship with altered states of consciousness and how these might hold the key to healing many symptoms of mental illness. Finally it looks at how we, as species, have come out of balance in our relationship to nature and the devastating affect this is having on our mental health. By learning from ancient indigenous cultures who have remained in balance with the natural world, this book looks at solutions to heal this modern imbalance and find a way forward for the Earth and ourselves.
