Book SynopsisThe book investigates omissions in the textual transmission of the Hebrew scriptures. Literary criticism (Literarkritik) commonly assumes that later editors only expanded the older text; omissions would not have taken place. This axiom is implied in analyses and introductions to the methodology. The book investigates the validity of the axiom. After a review of literature, books of methodology, and past research, texts from different parts of the Hebrew Bible are discussed with this aim in view. The investigated texts consist of examples which preserve documented evidence about editorial changes. Passages with variant editions are compared in order to understand omissions as an editorial technique. The comparison of variant witnesses includes, for example, passages where the Greek and Hebrew versions differ and cases where parallel passages differ (e.g., Chronicles in relation to Kings, the Temple Scroll in relation the Pentateuch). Example texts have been taken from the Pentateuch, Samuel, Kings, Ezra-Nehemiah, Esther, Jubilees, etc.The investigation shows that omissions took place in part of the transmission of the Hebrew scriptures. Although omissions were clearly less common than additions, the conclusion challenges the axiom of literary criticism. Rejecting the conventional implementation of the methodology, the book provides a new model for understanding the transmission of the Hebrew scriptures that integrates omissions as a possible editorial technique.

Der Verfasser des zweiten Briefs antwortet auf sie mit einer bisher in der Exegese kaum bedachten eschatologischen Position: Er antwortet mit einer Erneuerung der Naherwartung, die Paulus im ersten Brief vertreten hat. Taeseong Roh gelingt es, den zweiten Brief des Paulus an die Thessalonicher (sozial-) geschichtlich zu erhellen. Er tritt damit einer in der Exegese weit verbreiteten Resignation entgegen, das im zentralen apokalyptischen Teil in 2Thess 2,3ff Gesagte sei so sehr verschlësselt, dass es heute nicht mehr zu enträtseln ist. Aus diesem Grund besitzen gerade die Armen einen wahren und unvergänglichen Reichtum; sie gelten als wahrhaftige Könige.Die lukanische Erzählung von Jesus, der in Niedrigkeit geboren und gleichzeitig als Herrscher proklamiert wird, lässt sich vor dem Hintergrund der menippeischen Literatur, die aus dem Bereich der kynischen Philosophie stammt, plausibel interpretieren. Neumann benennt diese Bezëge und beschreibt sie im Einzelnen. Damit leistet er einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der hellenistischen Denkvoraussetzungen im Lukasevangelium.

Book SynopsisText in English & French. For 60 years Qumran research has been focused on epigraphy, exegesis, and the historical sources of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The manuscripts are now published and accessible, and research is turning in a positive way to the archaeology of the site and its context. The time has come to provide researchers with a complete documentation. The excavator, Roland de Vaux, had given preliminary reports and a valuable interpretation made in the immediate aftermath of the excavations. Since considerable progress has been made in the archeology of Hellenistic and Roman Palestine, however, Qumran has to be reassessed and the interpretation objectively verified. Volume IIIA presents an up-to-date archaeological reconsideration: a shorter and more precise chronology, in which the earthquake of 31 BC is deleted; the concept of an Essene community is challenged, owing to the lack of a suitable infrastructure; the cemetery itself is connected with a Jewish diaspora scattered around the Dead Sea. Other facilities strengthen the Jewish character of the site, however. The function of Qumran fits better with the rites of a pilgrimage on the occasion of the festivals of Passover and Pentecost. In the second part, the peripheral Essene facilities, expanded around an earlier Hellenistic center, are analyzed and described. The essay seeks to outline their internal consistency and to determine their function. The restoration of a stratigraphy, by cross-checking the excavation archives, leads to a redistribution of pottery in four levels in a more precise chronology.m The reconsideration makes use of anthropology, which opens up the archaeological field and throws additional light on the manuscripts.

Book SynopsisThe Sahidic version of 1 Samuel is an ancient daughter version of the Septuagint. Because the Sahidic translation was made before most of the Greek manuscripts we know were copied, it potentially contains ancient readings no longer preserved or only faintly attested in the Greek tradition. This study considers the Sahidic version of 1 Samuel as a translation and how it may best be used in Greek textual criticism. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to examine the translation technique of the Sahidic translator. Second, to analyze the affiliations between the Sahidic manuscripts as well as the affiliations between the Sahidic version and Greek traditions. In the translation-technical section, clause connections and translator s additions feature prominently. In the chapter concerning the affiliations of the Sahidic text, detailed textual analyses prevail. These analyses describe the textual character of each Sahidic manuscript, and search for the existence of secondary readings and/or corruptions. This study supports the creation of a new critical edition of the Septuagint of 1 Samuel for the Göttingen series. With respect to this edition, the primary goal is to identify the affiliations of the Sahidic version. This translation-technical study, however, will additionally allow for a more careful and accurate citation of the Sahidic version within the critical apparatus of the Greek text.

Book SynopsisThere is a longstanding scholarly debate on the nature of prophecy in ancient Israel. Until now, no study has based itself on the semantics of the Hebrew lexeme for "prophet". This investigation by William L. Kelly discusses the nature and function of prophecy in the corpus of the Hebrew book of Jeremiah. It analyses all occurrences of the lexeme in Jeremiah and performs a close reading of three primary texts, Jeremiah 1.4-19, 23.9-40 and 27.1-28.17. The result is a detailed explanation of how prophecy works, and what it meant to call someone by that name in ancient Israel. Combining the results of the semantic analysis and close readings, the study reaches conclusions for six main areas of study: (1) the function and nature of prophecy; (2) dreams and visions; (3) being sent; (4) prophets, priests and cult; (5) salvation and doom; and (6) legitimacy and authority. I then situate these findings in two current debates, one on the definition of the lexeme; and one on cultic prophecy. This study contributes to critical scholarship on prophecy in the ancient world, on the book of Jeremiah, and on prophets in ancient Israel. It is the first major study to analyse the lexeme; based on its semantic associations. It adds to a growing consensus which understands prophecy as a form of divination. Contrary to some trends in Jeremiah scholarship, this work demonstrates the importance of a close reading of the Masoretic (Hebrew) text. This study uses a method of a general nature which can be applied to other texts. Thus there are significant implications for further research on prophecy and prophetic literature.

Book SynopsisThe impressive image of the winged Yahweh is encountered in six psalms. The scholars argue about the background and the meaning of the picture with the arguments that it 1. compares the Israelite deity to a bird, 2. points to the winged sun disk, 3. uses Egyptian symbols for protection, 4. the picture of winged ones Goddesses conjured up or 5th to the winged cherubim in the temple or on the ark. These various arguments illustrate the need for a clearer way to interpret biblical images in the context of Middle Eastern art. This volume further develops the iconographic methods by looking at the image of the winged Yahweh in the middle of the literary images of a psalm. Various overlaps with Syro-Palestinian iconographic material can be discovered. These overlaps include: 1) the winged sun disk, 2) the Horus falcon, 3) winged suckling goddesses, 4) winged deities in battle. There is not a single idea behind the picture of the winged Yahweh. The winged Yahweh is an excellent example of a multi-layered literary image that is reminiscent of several iconographic motifs.

Which possibilities do exist to communicate with old, foreign cultures without being tempted to discover ones own self? The task of this book is to answer these questions in a commensurable way, by a comprehensive study of the prominent but also controversial document of the Memphite Theology. The research took advantage of both, the theoretical concerns of the cultural studies as well as the traditional egyptological methods. The Memphite Theology was over and over again the object of philological research, but never before was it documented in total and studied in a way to answer the questions of the human sciences today. The aim of the thick description of this document, which is crucial for scholars of Egyptology and comparative religion, is to fill this gap. For instance, new insights of literary studies about the text-context-divide are applied to get a broadened perspective. Therefore the triumphal Stela of Piye, which is the best-known and most comprehensive textual source of the Kushite era, and which dates to the same period as the Memphite Theology, will be analyzed for the first time as a textualized context of the Memphite Theology. The circulation of power, hegemony, and cultural representations in the ancient Egyptian 25th Dynasty are illustrated to the reader in a dynamic manner by this pluralistic approach. German text.
