Book SynopsisDer Kritisch-exegetische Kommentar zum Neuen Testament (KEK) wurde von Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer im Jahr 1829 begründet. Bis heute wird dieser Kommentar noch unter dessen Namen als »Meyers Kommentar« geführt. Das Kommentarwerk bietet zunächst ausschließlich von Meyer, später dann von seinen Mitarbeitern, bald dann von Mitgliedern der Religionsgeschichtlichen Schule und der Dialektischen Theologie bis heute in 16 Abteilungen grundlegende Kommentare zur Auslegung der neutestamentlichen Schriften. Theologisch bewegt sich das Kommentarwerk in Korrespondenz zur jeweiligen Theologiegeschichte (Rationalismus, Philologie, Religionsgeschichte, Kerygmatheologie). Kennzeichen des Kommentarwerks ist jedoch eine sich durchhaltende philologische und religionsgeschichtliche Akzentuierung. Unter den Kommentaren, die stets nur auf einen einzigen Band zu einer Schrift festgelegt waren, befinden sich theologische Meisterwerke wie Rudolf Bultmanns Kommentar zum Johannesevangelium oder wie Wilhelm Boussets Kommentar zur Johannesoffenbarung. Das vorliegende Werk zeichnet die Geschichte des KEK, seiner Autoren und seiner Beziehung zum Verlagshaus Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht von seinen Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart nach und bespricht die wechselvolle Auslegung der neutestamentlichen Schriften.

So erschließen sich Kontinuität und Differenziertheit des göttlichen Redens vom Alten bis zum Neuen Bund (Hebr 1,1f). Dabei ist die wenig gewürdigte Logik der Aufhebung (10,9b; 8,13a; 11,40) grundlegend. Vor diesem Hintergrund lässt sich die sprachförmige Christologie (zwischen Schöpfung und Eschatologie) ebenso rekonstruieren wie der wortbezogene Glaube (11,1) in Relation auf die verschiedenen Gestalten göttlicher Rede sowie auch das Verhältnis von Wort und Glaube in ihrer Geschichte im Alten Testament (11,4-38). Diese führt zu einer ausgeformten Eschatologie des sich vollendenden Wortes, und sie erlaubt schließlich die für den Hebräerbrief spezifische "Typologie" als Gottes Sich-Entsprechen im heilsgeschichtlichen Weiterreden in ihrer sprachlichen Logik zu verstehen.

Book SynopsisIn the history of the Greek translation of the Bible, there are two recensions that play a very important role. The first is the Hexaplaric recension of Origen. In this work, Origen displayed the different versions of the Biblical text and aimed at bringing the Greek text as it had been submitted so far closer to the then current Hebrew text. His intervention in the Greek text has "opened the gates to a flood of approximations of the Greek text to the Hebrew" (dixit Anneli Aejmelaeus). Indeed, one can find Hexaplaric readings in many manuscripts, and even in texts, manuscripts and versions that have never been labeled like that. Filtering out what are Hexaplaric readings is of utmost importance to the reconstruction of the Old Greek text, which may then point to another Hebrew text. A similar enterprise was undertaken by Lucian, and his work too needs to be reconstructed and traced in order to establish the Old Greek text. The current volume deals with the books of 1-2 Sam, 1-2 Kings, as well as Joshua and Esther.

Book SynopsisThe gospels are usually interpreted without much reference to Paul and his theology. Eric Kun Chun Wong, on the other hand, is of the opinion that all three synoptic gospels represent an ongoing dialogue with Paul. The Gospel of Mark has a number of common stories about Jesus, which is often interpreted to mean that this text pleads its case against Paul and for returning to the original meaning. It takes on the idea of the gospel, transforms it, but is nevertheless very close to Paul's teaching of the theology of the cross. The relationship between Mark and Paul may be seen as critical but neutral. The Gospel of Matthew, on the other hand, openly attacks Paul at several junctures and emphasizes, instead of his proclamation of the gospel among the peoples of the world, the ethical nature of Christ's message. Completely different is the approach of the author of Luke's Gospel: He is an admirer of Paul and presents his doctrine of justification clearly in the tradition of Paul.These conclusions are made possible by intertextual research. A dialogue with another text is not limited to literal references to the text in its original form. Historically speaking, such a dialogue is very likely: All three synoptic gospels presume the missionary activities of Paul among the heathen and could not have been written without such knowledge. It is unlikely that the authors were unaware of Paul and his theology, even if such insights were not transmitted in letters.

Ein eigenständiges Israel ist hier noch nicht zu erkennen. Die Mentalität tonangebender Kreise der Königszeit wird somit auf neue Weise transparent. In diesem Sinne leistet das Buch auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur sog. Monotheismusdebatte.

Kor 2,14-7,4 auszulegen. Eine auf breiter Quellenbasis durchgefëhrte Einordnung des Textes in den Diskurs antiker ars moriendi zeigt, dass der Apostel damit befasst ist, sich anhand seines vorbildlichen Todesverständnisses als respektable Persönlichkeit und legitimer Apostel der korinthischen Gemeinde darzustellen.

An dieser Hypothese sind in den letzten Jahren im Zuge der Revision der klassischen Pentateuchtheorien auch in der Beurteilung der Urgeschichte vermehrt Zweifel laut geworden. Martin Arneth kommt in seiner Untersuchung zu dem Ergebnis, dass in Gen 1-11 zwar von der Priesterschrift als einer literarisch geschlossenen Quelle auszugehen ist. Die nichtpriesterschriftlichen Texte sind indes literarisch und gedanklich auf die Priesterschrift bezogen und korrigieren sie, etwa in der Deutung der Sintflutkatastrophe.

Diese Fokussierung verstellt allerdings den Blick auf die interessante und wichtige Frage, ob es sich bei der Maria beim Kreuz aufgrund besagter Parallele um Maria von Nazareth handelt.Torsten Reiprich geht in einer grÃ"ndlichen Untersuchung genau dieser Frage nach und interpretiert sie im Kontext des gesamten Markusevangeliums. Die rätselhafte Umschreibung Marias in Mk 15,40 gehört nach seinem Ansatz zum markinischen Konzept des Wechsels von der Herkunftsfamilie in die "familia dei". Dabei arbeitet Reiprich die ekklesiologische Bedeutung dieses Konzeptes heraus und beschreibt das in der Fachliteratur wenig beachtete Gemeindeverständnis des Markus. Book SynopsisThis recent study presents a hermeneutically sophisticated examination of Jewish ways of knowing as evidenced in the writings of the Hebrew Bible. Keenly aware of the philosophical and cultural currents in epistemology from ancient history to today, O'Dowd focuses on the peculiarities of the ancient Hebraic traditions. Nowhere is it more appropriate to engage these religious and philosophical questions than through the luminous history of Hebrew wisdom and Law. After a brief introduction, each of the next six chapters explores the epistemological foundations evident in readings in the Torah (principally Deuteronomy) and Wisdom Literature (Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes). The final chapter draws these readings together, commenting when relevant on the subsequent history of Jewish and Christian writings, influenced as they are by the Western Greek tradition. On the whole, the narrative style of this investigation very clearly demonstrates the mythical, religious and ethical foundations for knowing in Israel's ancient world. The study also shows that Hebraic culture had to adapt its phenomenology of religion in the light of historical, social and cultural developments. Noting these changes, it also identifies continuity between Torah and Wisdom traditions which continue into later Jewish and Christian thought. The study demonstrates how important it is to recognize the way these unique ways of knowing often stand in contrast to rational, empirical and scientific ways of knowing in the Greek and Western world since then. While the study does not critique modern ways of knowing, it does provide many helpful ways to rethink our understanding of Hebraic religion and thought.

Book SynopsisThough interest in the use of metaphor in the Hebrew Bible has gained momentum in recent years, there is, to date, no investigation which concentrates exclusively on the animal metaphors in the book of Jeremiah. In this book, the author brings to light this neglected area of study by examining the language and imagery of the animal metaphors for the people of Israel in the book of Jeremiah. The contribution that these metaphors make to the theology of the book is given special attention, and since different interpretations have been given to many of the metaphors in question, the author resolves some of the questions regarding the meaning of these images in his in-depth study. Additionally, scholars have not tended to research metaphors for the nation of Israel and thus this volume draws attention to a particular subject which has largely been overlooked.In chapter one Foreman familiarizes the reader with the major theoretical approaches to metaphor and spells out the approach taken in his investigation. Eighteen metaphors are then thoroughly analyzed in chapters two, three, and four. These metaphors are grouped into three categories, each of which constitutes a chapter: pastoral metaphors, mammal metaphors, and bird metaphors. Methodisch folgt sie einem rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der das Augenmerk auf die zeitgeschichtlichen Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten des Verstehens richtet. Erkennbar werden spezifische formale und inhaltliche Bezëge der Geburtsgeschichte zur Konzeption des Goldenen Zeitalters. That volume, which appeared in 1999, caused considerable discussion because of its suggestion that Paul's reference to "erga nomou" (Galatians 2,16 et al.) was pointing to the "boundary markers" (J.D.G. Dunn) as well as to the Halakhot. To this was added the controversy of another volume edited by Bachmann in 2005 entitled "Lutheran and New Perspectives on Paul." This collection of articles extended the discussion and included studies on other themes on which Bachmann had written very innovatively in the past decades (Paul's logic, critical interpretation of the Letter to the Hebrews (particularly 2,1-4 and 5,1-10), the heavenly temple in the Gospels of Luke and John, the positive depiction of the apocalyptic horseman, history of Bible reception and art history).This collection of some 30 articles begins with a methodological contribution (first published here): Bachmann proclaims a historically oriented method of interpretation which unites synchronous and diachronous approaches, as opposed to the method (of U. Seit den 1980er Jahren sind in der Reihe La Bible d'Alexandrie 16 Bände mit Ãbersetzungen der Erläuterungen erschienen. Das Projekt Septuaginta Deutsch (LXX.D) existiert seit 1999. Im Jahr 2009 ist die vollständige deutsche Ãbersetzung der Septuaginta erschienen. Ein Band mit Erläuterungen ist in Arbeit. In beiden Projekten sind internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaften am Werk.Die Septuaginta kann nicht ohne Gundlagenarbeit an den Texten Ã"bersetzt werden; daher sind Ãbersetzungsprojekte immer auch zugleich Forschungsprojekte. In 2014 and 2015, they were offered for the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, which existed between 2007 and 2015; its objective was the study of the practices, interpretations, and reception history of sacrifice and cult in early Judaism, Christianity, and their larger cultural contexts (ancient Near East and Greco-Roman antiquity). This program unit offered panels under the title Writing a Commentary on Leviticus that were intended to provide scholars working on such commentary volumes with a forum of scholarly discussion and exchange. The panel series was proposed by Thomas Hieke, who was then work-ing on a Leviticus commentary for the academic series Herders Theologischer Kommentar zum Alten Testament (HThKAT, published by Herder in 2014). It was welcome and adopted by Christian A. Eberhart, founder and former chair of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section. The third and final panel was housed in the Ritual in the Biblical World section at the annual conference of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2016.The present volume makes the presentations by these scholars, and with them an important segment of the work of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, available to a wider academic audience.
