A A Balkema Publishers Ground Freezing: Proceedings of the 7th

Book SynopsisArtificial ground freezing has been used for over a century to form a temporary support and an impermeable barrier for underground openings and other excavations. Nowadays it can be an efficient barrier to prevent pollution spreading in permeable soils. Depending on circumstances chilled brine or liquid nitrogen is circulated through freeze tubes to form ice walls. This requires a good understanding of the thermal, mechanical and hydraulic properties of frozen and thawed soils. Topics: Heat and mass transfer; Mechanical properties; Engineering design; Case histories; Environmental soil freezing; etc.

Book SynopsisThe US Symposium on Rock Mechanics, held at Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada, is the 35th in a continuing series of now biennial meetings organized to support the national and trans-national interests of US scientists, engineers, consultants, students, and technologists interested in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The reviewed papers contained in this volume represent one or more aspects of this interdisciplinary field. This volume contains a total of 133 papers selected from 241 abstracts, in addition to 2 invited papers prepared on broad multidisciplinary issues. Session topics include: Construction; surface excavation; stability and shear strength of fractured rock; laboratory testing; rock dynamics; stress measurements; tunnels and groundwater flow; petroleum; tool-rock interaction; building stone durability; rock reinforcement; fracture mechanics; radioactive waste disposal; underground mining; fragmentation and blasting; metal mining, coal mining; planetary rock mechanics; rock properties; stochastic methods; theoretical and model studies; hydrology; and rock creep. Field trips and informal discussions associated with the symposium form an integral part of technical and social interaction among participants. Although much attention is devoted in the technical program to areas of major national concern in which rock mechanics problems represent critical or limiting factors - including energy, tunneling and excavation, waste disposal, and reactor siting - papers were sought and received with the widest possible scope of research and applications.

Book SynopsisThe modal analysis of the structures appears to be an essential tool to master their dynamic behaviour. Particularly, the modal synthesis methods combined with the updating technics of the Finite Element models lead to the definition of strategies peculiarly efficient. At present, several developments are being carried out in order to spread these procedures to the latest requirements in structural dynamics: Vibro-acoustic . behaviour; Stochastic approach; Non-linear analysis; Introduction of composite materials. The target of the MV2 International Conference was to take stock of the new methods suggested and to assess their effectiveness. The interest in this book is to gather original works that rely on high-level approaches although these works are clearly intended to industrual applications.

Book SynopsisGeosynthetic-Reinforced Soil (GRS) structures have gained increasing popularity in earthwork construction in many parts of the world. In actual construction, GRS structures have continued to demonstrate many distinct advantages over their conventional counterparts. GRS structures are typically more ductile, more flexible, more economical, more adaptable to low quality backfill, and easier to construct. This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Mechanically Stabilized Backfill. It comprises four parts: Five keynote presentations delivered by premier researchers and engineers from US, Japan, France, Italy and Canada; 26 technical papers by practitioners and researchers of reinforced soil technology; A special presentation on the performance of 7,6-m high prototype reinforced soil bridge piers and bridge abutment; Panel discussion on 4 volatile subjects: long-term deformation, connection strength, and seismic performance and design. The panel discussions feature presentations by renown experts on each subject. The ensuing floor discussions of each panel discussion is also included in the book. This unique forum shall help designers and researchers understand the divergent aspects and relative significance of each of the issues.

  • Structural Dynamic Systems Computational

Taylor & Francis Ltd Structural Dynamic Systems Computational

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNonlinear structural dynamic systems which are multi-degree of freedom systems involve, for instance, matrix dynamic equilibrium equations, which can be of various order up to very high order. In these equations, the nonlinear quantities can be dependent on time and other terms, such as scalar variables, which are dependent on time. Frequency response and response time derivatives would also, of course, be involved. Nonlinear terms can account for dissipative phenomena and can be due to other physical phenomena. In fact, many engineering structures involve time-dependent properties such as, stiffness elements of specific structural components which can change according to the stress level. Other examples of dynamic elements of nonlinear structural systems can include system mass and damping distribution elements which evolve with time, such as railway or highway bridges and other structures, which interact with external agencies generating the system motion (for example, trains, a queue of vehicles, or other external agencies.) This volume is a rather comprehensive treatment of many of the techniques and methods which are utilized for the analysis of nonlinear structural dynamic systems.Table of Contents1. Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis in the Frequency Domain of Structural Systems 2. Nonlinear Inelastic Dynamic Analysis of Beams and Beam-Columns 3. Techniques in Fourier Continuum Finite Elements for Large Deformation Structural Dynamics 4. Techniques in the Dynamic Analysis of Structures with Unilateral Constraints 5.Model Reduction Methodologies for Articulated Multi-flexible Body Systems 6. Dynamic Effects of Degenerate Singularities in the Potential Energy for Mechanical Systems

Book Synopsis51 papers which succinctly describe the state of the art in the areas: Comptutational models and techniques; Structural dynamics; Innovative construction materials; Damage simulation and Durability. The papers show the application of innovative methods to practical situations. The spectrum of the single papers ranges from experimental and theoretical investigations of structures subject to dynamic loading (wind, earthquake, church bell ringing, explosions), FE analyses of non-linear structural behaviour, innovative design and analysis concepts for reinforced concrete and steel structures and safety assessment methods with explicit damage evaluation to complex building/foundation models, structural glass and textile span investigations for existing historical steel bridges and optimization aspects.
