Fondé sur des archives inédites et des sources imprimées, il situe les différentes firmes françaises par rapport à leurs homologues dans le monde : Allemagne, Suisse, Italie, Grande-Bretagne, États-Unis, Japon. Cet ouvrage traite aussi de leurs relations avec les banques et avec l'État. Le livre apporte un renouvellement en profondeur des connaissances et des appréciations qui sont souvent portées sur l'industrie chimique en France à cette époque. Il en ressort que les condamnations sans appel sont à réviser, que certaines initiatives étaient lucides, que des réussites ont pris place dans la durée étudiée. En effet de 1870 à 1913 la croissance française dans cette branche est de 5 % par an, avec un bon rang en grande chimie minérale (y compris l'électrochimie) mais une moindre performance en chimie organique. Puis avec la guerre de 1914, l'indifférence de l'État vis-à-vis de ce secteur s'efface et de nouvelles tendances apparaissent. C'est ainsi qu'après-guerre trois secteurs réussissent particulièrement : une chimie de nouveaux médicaments, une chimie de matières plastiques de synthèse et une chimie de spécialités à petits tonnages. Paru à Tokyo en 1995, ce livre est traduit pour la première fois dans une langue occidentale grâce à une souscription de 128 historiens japonais. Une préface et une bibliographie complémentaire réalisées par deux historiens français apportent les repères ultérieurs à la date de la publication japonaise. Présentant les innovations, les investissements et les stratégies des ingénieurs, des dirigeants et des financiers français et étrangers, sans les séparer de la formation des hommes, de la législation des brevets et de la politique des droits de douane, ce livre éclaire à la fois l'histoire de la chimie et celle des modèles nationaux d'industrialisation.
