Regnery Publishing Inc Knowledge and Power: The Information Theory of
Book SynopsisLegendary economist, investor, tech philosopher, and public treasure George Gilder argues that a hard-driving culture of entrepreneurial ideas is now in conflict with a growing mindset of government regulation combined with a total surrender of the individual imagination. The winner of this battle may determine a new paradigm of economics and thought for the next century, whether we like it or not.Ronald Reagan’s most-quoted living author—George Gilder—is back with an all-new paradigm-shifting theory of capitalism that will upturn conventional wisdom. Gilder breaks away from the supply-side model of economics to present a new economic paradigm: the epic conflict between the knowledge of entrepreneurs on one side, and the blunt power of government on the other. The knowledge of entrepreneurs, and their freedom to share and use that knowledge, are the sparks that light up the economy and set its gears in motion. The power of government to regulate, stifle, manipulate, subsidize or suppress knowledge and ideas is the inertia that slows those gears down, or keeps them from turning at all. One of the twentieth century’s defining economic minds has returned with a new philosophy to carry us into the twenty-first. Knowledge and Power is a must-read for fiscal conservatives, business owners, CEOs, investors, and anyone interested in propelling America’s economy to future success.

Brandeis University Press The Book of Looms – A History of the Handloom
Book SynopsisA heavily illustrated classic on the evolution of the handloom. The handloom—often no more than a bundle of sticks and a few lengths of cordage—has been known to almost all cultures for thousands of years. Eric Broudy places the wide variety of handlooms in their historical context. What influenced their development? How did they travel from one geographic area to another? Were they invented independently by different cultures? How have modern cultures improved on ancient weaving skills and methods? Broudy shows how virtually every culture has woven on handlooms. He highlights the incredible technical achievement of early cultures that created magnificent textiles with the crudest of tools and demonstrates that modern technology has done nothing to surpass their skill or inventiveness. Trade Review“Broudy extracts his evidence from such unlikely places as Egyptian tombs to the unearthed ruins of a ninth century Viking ship in Norway. . . . In this awesome feat of research, recounted with storytelling expertise, he traces the growth of weaving from simple matting and wickerwork basketry to the massive tapestry (haute-lisse) looms of the Gobelin workshop of Paris and the silk-producing izaribata looms of China. . . . If you are a weaver by profession or hobby, this book will make you proud of it, and, if you have never touched a loom and are thinking of a new career, this book will, once you tear yourself away from it, send you spinning off to the yarn store.” * Goodfellow Review of Craft *“If you are also fascinated by the historical and cultural aspects of weaving, this book should find a place in your library.” * Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers *Table of ContentsIntroduction, 1. Brandeis University Press The Myth of Progress – Toward a Sustainable
Book SynopsisA powerful argument that our current path toward progress, based on continual economic expansion and inefficient use of resources, runs contrary to three foundational scientific laws. In this compelling, cogently argued, and acclaimed book, Tom Wessels demonstrates how our current path toward progress, based on continual economic expansion and inefficient use of resources, runs contrary to three foundational scientific laws that govern all complex natural systems. It is a myth, he contends, that progress depends on a growing economy. Wessels explains his theory with his three laws of sustainability: the law of limits to growth; the second law of thermodynamics, which exposes the dangers of increased energy consumption; and the law of self-organization, which results in the marvelous diversity of such highly evolved systems as the human body and complex ecosystems. Wessels argues that these laws, scientifically proven to sustain life in its myriad forms, have been cast aside since the eighteenth century, first by Western economists, political pragmatists, and governments attracted by the idea of unlimited growth, and more recently by a global economy dominated by large corporations, in which consolidation and oversimplification have created large-scale inefficiencies in both material and energy usage. Wessels makes scientific theory readily accessible by offering examples of how the laws of sustainability function in the complex systems we can observe in the natural world around us. Demonstrating that all environmental problems have their source in a disregard for the laws of sustainability, he concludes with an impassioned argument for cultural change. This new edition has a new preface wherein the author regards The Myth of Progress as his most important work. It has been in constant demand since it was first published in 2006. Trade Review“Wessels is a tried-and-true master of nature writing. . . . [He] argues deftly that due to the limits of material resources, the finitude of time itself and the laws which govern the states in which energy can be captured, transferred or lost, we simply cannot expect to progress for no other reason than progress itself. We must have a moral underpinning that grounds and informs our interactions, both economic and interpersonal, within the world we inhabit.” * Monadnock Ledger-Transcript *“This is an impassioned, critical, and bold book. Wessels is guided by his overwhelming sense that the laws of sustainability demand respect, understanding, and interpretation, and unless we educate ourselves about their full complexity and truth, we will do irreparable damage to the landscapes we love.” * Northern Woodlands *Table of ContentsPreface to the Revised EditionAcknowledgmentsPrologueIntroduction1.The Myth of Control: Complex versus Linear Systems2.The Myth of Growth: Limits and Sustainability3.The Myth of Energy: The Second Law of Thermodynamics4.The Myth of the Free Market: The Loss of Diversity, Democracy, and Economic Resiliency5.The Myth of Progress: A Need for Cultural ChangeEpilogue: From Consumption to ConnectionGlossary of Scientific TermsIndex

G&D Media Connect!: How to Build Trust-Based Relationships
Book SynopsisAt Dale Carnegie Training, we agree that some things never change. After all, the timeless principles that our founder Dale Carnegie established are still as practical and relevant today as ever. Now that the citizens of our world have made radical shifts because of the global pandemic, and adjusted to remote work and social distancing, the ways we used to connect with others may seem distant or even obsolete. We yearn for real connection, deep and meaningful interactions that are based on commonality instead of what we can get from one another.Connections can happen anywhere and can range from the simple to the profound. They are what adds the seasoning to the stew of life. They are the things that can make their day, and make ours, and leave us smiling. And who doesn't want to smile?Does this mean that it's easy? That there are no challenges to connecting with different people? Of course not. In our modern world, it's become normalized to have conflict with those who are different from us. This can make some people skeptical and suspicious when we reach out to them for connection. What do you want from me? can be a response. I'm not going to change for you.Yet, those are the very situations where connection matters most. True, genuine connection can create commonality from difference. And once that is done, conflict decreases. We may not agree with the other person, but we can step inside their world for awhile. And understand their perspective, and maybe change our own, or at least understand the true source of disagreement. The truth is, it's easier to change ourselves than our circumstances. And, we can change our circumstances by changing ourselves.

G&D Media Take Charge of Your Life: The 12 Master Skills
Book SynopsisOne of the hallmark''s of Brian Tracy''s philosophy is that you are 100% responsible for the results in your life. While Brian Tracy has discussed this philosophy since the 1980''s, it is increasingly out of place in our current cultural moment. Today there are numerous voices telling you that any of your struggles or challenges are due to other people or societal conditions that are beyond your control. But, as you''ll read in this life-changing book, the philosophy of complaint and "blaming others" is ultimately a dead-end path that leads to despair. G&D Media Why People Work
Book SynopsisWhy do people work? This appears to be a very simple and obvious question. And when we ask this question to people, we usually get a simple and seemingly obvious answer - “DUH!
