    2 in stock

The first biography of one of the North East’s best-known artists. Written by well-known local art historian and author Marshall Hall, and titled John Falconar Slater – The North East’s Weatherproof Artist, it tells of how the Newcastle-born artist acquired his nickname by wearing his weatherproof oilskins to paint the local coastline in the wildest of climatic conditions. At a time when artists on the Continent were increasingly succumbing to the attractions of open-air painting, leading to their identification as “Impressionists”, a North East artist had been independently practising it for several years, and in weather conditions rarely tackled by its followers in France and elsewhere.

Book SynopsisOn 31st January 2020, Newcastle Hospitals became the first hospital in the UK to receive patients suffering from a new illness - Covid-19. At the time Tom Warburton was a senior director at Newcastle City Council and was directly involved in organising many of the city’s responses to the Covid pandemic. As a keen amateur photographer, he knew he would be in a unique position to try and make a photographic record of the pandemic's effect on Newcastle and its people during one of the most difficult periods in recent history. Over the next two years, and with controlled access to some of the most sensitive and strategic areas of the battle against the virus, Tom recorded both the sadness and desperation as well as the achievements and sacrifices of those in the frontline fight against the pandemic. Tom’s photographs will serve as an important historical reminder of one of the most significant and strange times in Newcastle’s history and as a fitting tribute to those who took risks to help others and provide life-saving services. A proportion of the book’s sales revenue will go to Newcastle Hospitals Charity and West End Food Bank.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION ... 9 EARLY DAYS ... 10 FIRST LOCKDOWN ... 14  CITY LIFE LINE & FOOD SUPPLY ... 20  PPE SUPPLY ... 26 CARE HOMES ... 30 TESTING FOR COVID ... 36 NEWCASTLE HOSPITALS ... 44  NORTH EAST AMBULANCE TRUST ... 68 INCREASED DEATH RATE ... 72 SUMMER 2020 UNLOCKED ... 80 AUTUMN 2020 ... 88 CHRISTMAS 2020 ... 102 VACCINATION PROGRAMMES ... 108 ANTI-VAX DEMOS ... 120 UNSUNG HEROES ... 130 COMMUNITY RESPONSE ... 138 LOOKING BACK ... 146

Book Synopsis‘We face forward’ Kwame Nkrumah, 7th April 1960 From Amanda Gorman resplendent in kente cloth (courtesy of Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton) on the cover of US Vogue, to Michelle Obama’s repeated outings in Duro Olowu, African fashion exerts worldwide influence. Africa Fashion discusses how radical post-independence social and political re-ordering sparked a cultural renaissance across the continent. Designers such as Shade Thomas-Fahm, Chris Seydou, Kofi Ansa and Alphadi drew on past traditions, recovered and reinvented them and so laid the foundation for today’s fashion revolution. The authors then present the work of the new generation of creatives such as Nigerian fashion designer Lisa Folawiyo, Somali visual artist Gouled Ahmed, Ghanaian woven bag maker AAKS, and Kenyan jeweler Ami Doshi Shah. Their work shows that there is no one way to be African and no single African aesthetic. The contemporary African fashion scene is as diverse and dynamic as the continent itself, and crucially always has been. With contributions from experts on cloth, fashion and cultural history as well as the voices of makers and designers, this inspiring and arresting book offers a window into one of the most innovative, exciting and thoughtful areas of fashion today.Trade Review'arresting on the shelf and packed with insight', The hottest coffee table books to buy right now, Joe Bromley, Evening Standard, July 2022 -- 'With Africa Fashion...it is minds that will be captivated.' Book SynopsisLighthouses may stand watchfully over serene waters one day and be bombarded by immense waves the next. They may look out on the most spectacular views, mark the entrance to a busy harbour or be placed in some of the world’s most desolate locations. To seafarers they are guiding lights in dangerous waters, but, once decommissioned, they can acquire an air of mystery. They are the most strictly functional of all civilian buildings and yet they can be surprisingly beautiful and varied in design. Are they square, cylindrical or octagonal? Are they single structures or towers on top of other buildings? Are they made of wood, stone, brick, or concrete? Are they coloured with stripes or bands? From Lake Michigan to the Arctic Circle, from the British Isles to Brazil, Lighthouses celebrates more than 200 structures and the stunning vistas that surround them. Taking examples from all around the world, the book features an immense array of operating and disused lighthouses from the 18th century to the present day, from those marking ocean coastlines to structures besides lakes and on rivers, from lighthouses cloaked in ice to Art Deco classics to tilting structures abandoned in sand dunes. Book SynopsisOften associated with spring and Easter, fluffy bunnies and rabbits are also synonymous with undeniably cute animals. You may have read the Velveteen Rabbit as a child or seen Bambi – where rabbits are portrayed as sweet, sympathetic characters. However, wild rabbits are relatively independent and territorial creatures, making them prone to aggression when they have not been domesticated as household pets. Read Rabbits and learn about the many breeds found across the world, from the Riverine rabbit, solitary and nocturnal, one of the most endangered animals in the world, to the French Angora, docile and sociable, often bred for the long hair of its coat, known as Angora wool. Discover the miniature lop, which with its cute floppy ears and button nose, rarely weighs more than three kilograms (six pounds); learn how rabbits and hares use their large, translucent ears to regulate their body temperature; and see how the black-tailed jackrabbit can run at speeds of 65 km/h (40 mph) to dodge predators in the deserts of North America. With informative, detailed captions accompanying each image explaining the origins, habitat and behaviour of these unmistakable hunters, Rabbits is a vivid pictorial guide in 130 brilliant photographs.Table of ContentsIntroduction1: RABBIT BREEDS Holland lop Netherland dwarf rabbit Angora rabbit Mini rex Teddy dwarf Dutch rabbit Miniature lop Lionhead rabbit Harlequin rabbit French Angora Silver fox rabbit Satin rabbit White Vienna rabbit Jersey Wooly Gotland rabbit Pannon white Hyplus Mellerud rabbit2: WILD RABBITS Colombian Pygmy rabbit Cottontail rabbit European rabbit Amami rabbit Sumatran striped rabbit Riverine rabbit Volcano rabbit and zacatuche Sumatran rabbit Riverine rabbits3: JACKRABBITS, HARES & PIKAS Lagomorphs – hares and pikas Currently, we recognize 80 living species of lagomorphs, placed in 2 families containing 13 genera. Book SynopsisA hotspot in the North Atlantic, Iceland is one of the world's most unusual countries. It is Europe's second largest island but its most sparsely populated country. Sitting astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, linking the North Atlantic plate with the Eurasian plate, it is closer to Greenland than Europe. It lies just south of the Arctic Circle, but, warmed by Gulf Stream waters, has a temperate climate. It has fiery volcanoes and freezing glaciers, striking black sand beaches and hot geysers the word geyser itself comes from Icelandic. And a geologically young landmass, Iceland is still taking shape: a volcanic eruption in 1963 caused the formation of the new island of Surtsey. Iceland is a fascinating exploration of this most beautiful island. From volcanoes and lava flows to geysers and geothermal pools, from bird life to whale-watching, from national parks, verdant valleys to inland tundra, and from how waterfalls are used for hydro-electric power to Reykjavik's city life,

Book SynopsisThe Renaissance of the 14th–16th centuries was, and forever will be, one of the most pivotal periods in the development of Western art. Its roots spread wide and deep, and much social and intellectual revitalization had begun before this revered time, but the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman texts and the development of expanding trade, which brought greater wealth, meant that classical and humanist thought combined with lavish patronage resulted in major breakthroughs across all spheres of human endeavour – art, architecture, music, literature, science, philosophy and more. And, while it spread across Europe, it was Italy that was to be its crucible. With 2020 marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael, one of the stars of the Renaissance, this sumptuous book celebrates the prolific output of this era. From the radical perspective of Giotto di Bondone (1267–1337), breaking out of the Middles Ages, to the giants of the High Renaissance: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael, and many more, the reader will delight in the fascinating insights offered by the text accompanied by lush reproductions.

Book SynopsisPhotography was invented between the publication of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations and Karl Marx and Frederick Engels's The Communist Manifesto. Taking the intertwined development of capitalism and the camera as their starting point, the essays in Capitalism and the Camera investigate the relationship between capitalist accumulation and the photographic image, and ask whether photography might allow us to refuse capitalism's violence-and if so, how?Drawn together in productive disagreement, the essays in this collection explore the relationship of photography to resource extraction and capital accumulation, from 1492 to the postcolonial; the camera's potential to make visible critical understandings of capitalist production and society, especially economies of class and desire; and propose ways that the camera and the image can be used to build cultural and political counterpublics from which a democratic struggle against capitalism might emerge. With essays by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, Siobhan Angus, Kajri Jain, Walter Benn Michaels, T. J. Clark, John Paul Ricco, Blake Stimson, Chris Stolarski, Tong Lam, and Jacob Emery.Trade ReviewThese essays scrutinize the photograph from multiple angles to expose the image-capitalism of our ongoing Imperial Age. A treasure trove of contemporary approaches to critical visual studies. -- Susan Buck-Morss, CUNY Graduate CenterThis is the most original and ground-breaking collection of essays on photography that I have seen in many years, featuring notable critics and scholars at the height of their powers. Do not look for consensus here, but a refreshing take on the enduring contradictions that beset this essential medium of modernity. -- W. J. T. Book SynopsisIn this exciting, innovative work, Polish feminist philosopher Ewa Majewska maps the creation of feminist counterpublics around the world-spaces of protest and ideas, community and common struggle, that can challenge the emergence of fascist states as well as Western democratic "public spheres" populated by atomized, individual subjects.Drawing from Eastern Europe and the Global South, Majewska describes the mass labor movement of Poland's Solidarnosc in 1980 and contemporary feminist movements across Poland and South America, arguing that it is outside of the West that we can see the most promising left futures. Majewska argues for the creation of a feminist public-a politics and a world held in common-and outlines the tactics this political goal demands, arguing for a feminist political theory that does not reproduce the same forms of domination it seeks to overcome.Trade ReviewEwa Majewska looks at the ways that feminist spaces resist the tide of fascism. * Lit Hub (75 Nonfiction Books You Should Read This Summer) *A central figure in Polish feminism. -- Amia Srinivasan * New Yorker *
