  • Why We Make Art: And Why it is Taught

Intellect Books Why We Make Art: And Why it is Taught

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisGovernments around the world spend millions on art and cultural institutions, evidence of a basic human need for what the author refers to as 'creating aesthetic significance'. Yet what function or purpose does art satisfy in today’s society? In this thorough and accessible text, Richard Hickman rejects the current vogue for social and cultural accounts of the nature of art-making in favour of a largely psychological approach aimed at addressing contemporary developmental issues in art education. Bringing to bear current ideas about evolutionary psychology, this second edition will be an important resource for anyone interested in arts education.Trade Review'Hickman’s consideration of why we make art and why it is taught asserts his support for the creative potential inherent within art education. He doesn’t resort to championing one canon over another, nor does he completely discount any research he has addressed. His open and honest considerations of topics addressed create a much-needed space for discussion within the realm of education. If more educators could gain this clarity of vision through imaginative consideration, our educative systems might one day reflect the imaginings of an artist. And to that end, we might embrace our innate curiosity and allow ourselves the opportunity to see our world differently and perhaps, with the artistry and imagination Hickman knows and seeks for all.' -- Stephanie Baer, art educator, University of Nebraska, * Lincoln Education Review *'Richard Hickman has described the complex workings in the art classroom with literary elegance. His sensitive and astute conceptualisation of the many factors which surround the success of the art education domain emanate from the empirical evidence of his research, his depth of knowledge as an artist and art educator and his experiences as a teacher and inspector within the British education system during the past three decades.' -- Dr Susan Paterson, art educator, University of Tasmania * IJADE 25.2 *'Why We Make Art and Why it is Taught has been a major influence in my career as an artist and an art educator. The depth of research that Dr. Hickman has undergone in the areas of creativity and self-esteem have impacted my way of thinking in a most positive manner. His ideas on our capacity to notice, understand and communicate visually, should be a part of every artist/educator's pedagogy. -- Julie Stanek, art educator Memphis, Tennessee'This book deserves close attention by those artists, teachers and academics who identify themselves with art education not simply as a subject in the curriculum but as a way of understanding and engaging with a wider meaning in life.' -- Professor John Baldacchino * Teachers’ College Record *'We should welcome and inwardly digest this excellent book that examines the necessity for art as a basic human need' -- Antony Gormley, artist'Richard Hickman seamlessly brings together modern and postmodern perspectives in visual art and education and in so doing offers a truly engaging argument for why we make art and why it is taught. The strength of this book is in Hickman's ability to write lucidly (and entertainingly!) about a complex subject, blend theory and research, and maintain his unique voice throughout' -- Dr Kristen Eglinton, social scientist, New YorkTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface Foreword by Antony Gormley Section One Art and art education Section Two Conversations and reflections – some ‘mini case-studies’ Section Three Issues in art and learning Section Four Concluding chapter Concluding remarks Notes and references for Section Four Bibliography Subject Index Name Index Appendixes

  • First Quarter

The Lilliput Press Ltd First Quarter

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this reflective and enriching memoir, John Tuomey navigates the places and memories of his life over the scope of twenty-five years. First recognised for the urban regeneration of Dublin’s Temple Bar, which included the construction of the Irish Film Institute, the National Photographic Archive and Gallery of Photography, his life in architecture led him to design social and cultural spaces such as the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, the Glucksman Gallery in UCC and the Victoria & Albert East Museum in London. Imbued with many inter-textual references to poetry, drama and literature and written in limpid prose, this memoir is inherently literary in nature. Tuomey looks back to his early life where he was born in Tralee and lived in different counties around Ireland, from small towns to country landscapes, from schooldays in Dundalk to student activism at University College Dublin. He traces the pathways that led to his formation as an architect, reflecting on the many cultural and social influences on his life. He excels in capturing the social landscape of Dublin in the 1980s and pays particular attention to the many buildings and social hubs of the inner city. His transient years of moving from Dublin to London, and subsequently working in places like Nairobi and Milan, chronicle the international influences on his outlook. The key relationships in his life, including meeting his future wife, Sheila – a fellow student of architecture in UCD – and his pivotal employment by James Stirling in 1976, form the backbone of his personal and professional life. Tuomey’s expertise in his field is unsurpassed, with meticulous detail given to the finer aspects of design and architecture. His thoughts on the challenges facing the encroaching erasure of city life in Dublin are essential reading for anyone with an interest in the future of building in the city.Trade Review'First Quarter is light, strong book, beautifully balanced and crafted; there is a sense of rightness to it. A wise and lovely read.' Anne Enright 'First Quarter is a book rich in imagery through words, in recollection and in reflection … Tuomey’s writing has a poetic style that balances on echoes. As a writer, as well as a person, he reveals a sensitivity, alive to poetry and beauty. He also reveals an irreverent streak of wit and fun.’ Gemma Tipton, Irish Times‘There's a dry wit about his writing, suggesting a man not averse to comedies big and small, and this slim but eloquent little volume gives the reader an insight into the man behind the innovative design.’ Anne Cunningham, Meath Chronicle‘[A] spare, purposeful memoir … It is a pleasure to read John’s account of the intellectual excitement of his student years.’ Irish Examiner ‘Beautifully rendered, carefully pared-back … modest, witty and stylish.’ Sunday Independent‘A rich and beautifully crafted tapestry of Tuomey’s early years delivered with effortless wit and balance. It is a very personal exploration of self-identity by way of skilful and captivating storytelling.’ Tina-Marie O'Neill, Sunday Business Post‘It is beautifully written, in plain English … each lucid and often witty page holds and repays your interest and attention, and you find yourself at moments tracking back just for the pleasure of reading a passage again. … Read the Tuomey book, I’d advise. It’s wise, tender and – human.’ Hugh Pearman, RIBA Journal

  • Pallas Athene Publishers A Memoir of Vincent van Gogh

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisVincent van Gogh's short, passionate life was driven by an almost unimaginable creative energy that eventually overwhelmed him. The outlines of his story - the early strivings in Holland and Paris, the revelatory impact of the move to Provence, the attacks of madness that led ineluctably to his suicide - are almost as familiar as the paintings. Yet it is more than possible that neither the paintings nor Van Gogh's story would have survived at all if it had not been for his remarkable sister-in-law, Jo van Gogh-Bonger. After Vincent's death and that of her husband, his brother Theo, Jo devoted her life to preserving and exhibiting the paintings, and editing the letters. It is in her short and unaccountably neglected biography that we can come closest to Vincent the man.Trade Review"The London publishing house Pallas Athene has come up with the very welcome and worthwhile project of assembling English translations of early biographies of artists in an easily accessible publication." - Historians of Netherlands Art Reviews

Taylor & Francis Ltd Sustainable by Design: Explorations in Theory and

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTo advance the subject of design one has to engage in the activity of designing. Sustainable by Design offers a compelling and innovative, design-centred approach that explores both the meaning and practice of sustainable design. Walker explores the design process in the context of sustainability, and challenges conventional ways of defining, designing and producing functional objects. He discusses the personal design process, tacit knowledge, ephemeral design, experimental design, and the relationship between intellectual design criteria, physical expression and aesthetic experience. This book will introduce vital concepts to students and will inspire designers by providing a well-articulated basis for understanding the complexity and potential of sustainable design, and extolling the contribution of design to the creation of a more meaningful material culture.Trade Review'Definitely to be on the booklist of any product design course' Professor Jack Ingram, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design 'A fascinating book that takes the reader on a journey that is both diverse and full of surprise' Jonathan Chapman, Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton 'A sensitive, thought-provoking book that explores fresh possibilities.' Alastair Fuad-Luke, sustainable design facilitator, lecturer, writer and maker 'Sustainable by Design is a key addition to the ... bookshelf' Martin Charter, Director, The Centre for Sustainable Design, UCCA 'At once inspiring and informative ... It offers designers, students, and practitioners alike a journey into the heart of design through philosophical questioning of place, time, materiality, self, society, and meaning, without sacrificing the practical concerns regarding the transition from models of consumption to sustainability. The sophistication of the exploration cannot be overstated and should be required reading for students of design. Summing Up: Highly recommended.' Choice 'With beautiful images to back up his words, Walker tutors, suggests and inspires...this book is a must for students and designers, its thoughtful approach also makes it an interesting read for anyone who's excited by the current shift of play.' Sally White, Resource, 2008. 'Walker presents an investigation of sustainable desgign that is at once inspiring and informative...The sophistication of the exploration cannot be overstated and should be required reading for students of design.' L. Farooque, CHOICE‘This book delves into the mindset and philosophy that should drive sustainable design and not just token gestures in product innovation like 100% recyclable eco efficiency labels, although every little helps. Walker takes you on a journey from the enlightenment period to modern day consumerism and shows how our perception of time, place and aesthetic norms affect our ecosphere. His analysis is deep, insightful and regularly refers to case studies and his own experimentation… Overall this is an inspiring book for design students, academics and professionals. Book SynopsisIn 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The thirty-three-year-old Michelangelo had very little experience of the physically and technically taxing art of fresco; and, at twelve thousand square feet, the ceiling represented one of the largest such projects ever attempted. Nevertheless, for the next four years he and a hand-picked team of assistants laboured over the vast ceiling, making thousands of drawings and spending back-breaking hours on a scaffold fifty feet above the floor. The result was one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. This fascinating book tells the story of those four extraordinary years and paints a magnificent picture of day-to-day life on the Sistine scaffolding - and outside, in the upheaval of early sixteenth-century Rome.Trade ReviewRoss King deftly stitches modern Michelangelo scholarship into his fluent and gripping narrative. • Jean Haines’ Atmospheric Watercolours: Painting

Search Press Ltd Jean Haines’ Atmospheric Watercolours: Painting

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAccomplished artist Jean Haines shares her passion for watercolours in this wonderfully practical book. Known for her exciting techniques and love of colour, Jean takes you on an inspirational painting journey on which you’ll encounter, amongst other things, magical watercolour flow, glorious washes, sunbursts, and a magnificent ‘hotting it up’ finale. With her simple exercises, clear advice and easy-to-follow projects, Jean pushes the boundaries and will alter the way you think about watercolours and painting for ever. With a selection of popular subjects, including animals, landscapes, buildings, flowers and people, there is something for everyone here, whatever their artistic ability.Trade ReviewTHE ARTIST MAGAZINE : BOOK REVIEW Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours The book is nothing less than a paean to the wet in wet technique. If that's your thing, prepare to be amazed. Jean Haines credits Jean Louis Morelle, and in many ways this book is the sequel to Morelle's remarkable, but very technical work, showing the wealth of creative possibilities the technique offers. A lot of the images are barely recognisable and yet you instinctively know what they are. I wish I knew how, because this is impressionism taken to its logical conclusion and reminiscent of some of the later work by JMW Turner. You will have to take it from me that "First signs of a face appearing magically from a first wash of watercolour" is pure alchemy. This is an extraordinary book. * The Artist Magazine *July 12 Nothing short of fantastic. I first fell in love with Jean's work when she wrote 'Colour and Light in Watercolour', I thought it was wonderful and still do. Yet with this new book, we've moved on ten steps ahead. You have to buy this book if you are remotely interested in watercolour. Known as a difficult medium to master, Jean shares her knowledge and style so that we can learn and improve. Her loose style won't be to everyone's taste, but you don't know until you try it. Painting this ways liberates your art. The book covers many subjects including flowers, portraits and animals so it has wide appeal. It will take you from first steps yet is still suitable for experienced watercolorists. I love it. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *May 12 This is one of those books that you can’t help but pick up and flick through even if you are not a watercolourist. Beautifully put together with wonderful images throughout, with 176 pages full of tips, techniques, watercolour secrets, and chapters with titles like: Glorious washes, Magical water flow, Sunbursts, Hotting it up, Fabulous effects, and Suggestive seduction, etc, how can anyone not be enticed to want to read this??? Even though I have only skimmed through this book tonight, I already know this book will more than satisfy that hunger I have for this style. I will savour and enjoy more slowly the wonderful 33 image step by step showing how to paint a historic door in Venice, a 28 image step by step showing how to paint a three sheep composition, sections on textural effects with cling film and salt, etc, and lots... and lots more... I know this book will never make it to my art book shelf as it will be in constant use with me referring back to it frequently. * lauramoorewatercolourart.blogspot.co.uk *Summer 12 Encouraged by the saying 'don't be a sheep, be unique', Jean Haines hopes to bring the best out of all artists by being more creative with the colours they use, the freedom of their brushstrokes, or simply an attitude of mind. Techniques, such as using your brush to its full potential, applying washes and, in particular, using colour, are described in great detail with many step-by-step examples and projects to follow. If nothing else, Jean's work is sure to inspire you to let go of some of your inhibitions. It simply dazzles on the page and makes you want to grab your brushes and get going straight away. * Leisure Painter, The *July 12 Hi Jean, I have just bought your new book and love it!! I had to let you know that I think your work really is lovely and so atmospheric...........as the title says!!!! I also have your first book! Oh to be able to paint nearly as good as you do!! Warm Regards, Colleen. * Customer *July 12 Hi Jean, Just wanted to say that I bought your book "Atmospheric Watercolours" yesterday and what an absolutely fabulous book it is. I have dozens of art books but this is far and away the very best. As an artist, I know that you will understand if I tell you that it "moved me". I connected straight away when I read about how we need to create and not care about what anyone else thinks.....I have often worried that I might be doing something wrong or with the wrong techniques and yet I wanted to do my own thing ! (the rebel artist in me...lol) It reminded me of when I found a super freeform crochet book over 30 years ago, by the lovely Sylvia Cosh (sadly no longer with us). When I found her book , I knew that I had found what I had been looking for in my crochet and went on to spend many happy years designing beautiful knitwear. Sadly because of repetitive strain to my wrists from all the crochet, I had to give it up and so turned to art but couldn't find anything except the conventional style, and this wasn't what I was looking for. YOUR book has inspired me just like Sylvia's book did all those years ago. I have joined the SAA as there are no art groups near to me and try to paint every day. Thank you for such wonderful inspiration...I now can't wait to get painting and see what evolves. Thank you Brenda Cumming * Customer *Sept 12 Search Press doesn't publish many hardcover books, but when it does, I expect something a bit special. This is no exception to the rule, so prepare yourself for a large format coffee table book filled with sumptuous illustrations. Her is a book to get your creative juices flowing and make you abandon the coffee in favor of your easel. Well, maybe that is overdoing it a bit, but the subtitle of this book is painting with freedom, expression and style. Ms Haines' painting style verges on the abstract in many cases, and comes across as being free and spontaneous. East meets west here as the author talks about her love of Chinese brushwork and brings some of that to her work, as well as a lot of sheer enthusiasm and a throwing away of the rulebook. I'm always keen on people who do that, and there are lots of exercises to try out to free up one's hand and generally have fun with paint. Of course, you can expect all the usual topics found in books on watercolor painting: working with color, mixing washes, choosing materials etc. But here they are explored in unconventional ways, and I can recommend this book to all those who think they can't paint and find most painting styles too rigid and structured. There is a lot in here and all of it is suitable both for beginners and those who have painted for years but want to try something new. A lovely book that should have wide appeal, I enjoyed Ms Haines' huge enthusiasm for her subject. * Myshelf.com *Aug 12 WOW! is just a big understatement. Jean's latest book "Atmospheric Watercolors" is packed full of her gorgeous paintings which include florals, portraits, animals, street scenes and architecture as well as fabulous textures and stunning color palettes. Did I mention 'WOW?' I had a wonderful time, paging through the book, trying out some of Jean's techniques and following along with her step-by-step demos and lessons. She is not only a talented painter but a gifted instructor as well.-paintedheartstudio.blogspot.co.uk * Customer *Dear Jean, I am writing back to say I have now picked up Atmospheric Watercolours from the library - I had to wait for it to arrive in the country! I haven’t finished it yet but I love it already, and have ordered a copy of my own. It is hard to explain how wonderful your books are. It is partly your style of painting which is just amazing, and partly the way you write so enthusiastically. In any case I feel like I have found a way forward with my painting, and I am very excited about it!-Stephanie Parkes * Customer *Sept 12 Hi, Jean! I know you must read a lot of e-mails about your latest book, Atmospheric Watercolours, but I had to send you at least one more thanks for such a great book and inspiration!!!! I never took you seriously when I read, "If you don't wish to be addicted to watercolour as I am, now is the time to escape." I feel like the flood gates have been opened and I can't stop painting just one more! What I really appreciated was that you didn't start your watercolor book out with all the "don'ts" (don't use cadmiums, etc.)... but encouraged me to break all the rules, so to speak - and even paint for the bin... and I am having a ball! Sometimes I think a necessary step to "loosening up" is that one can actually paint in a tight, exact manner... then choose "not" to. Your book came at a perfect time for me, and I am really enjoying the journey! Thank you so much for such a well written, honest and inspirational book!~Linda Borch * Customer *Sept 12 Dear Jean, I felt that I had to contact you to express my gratitude for your book "Atmospheric Watercolours ". I have been struggling with watercolour for some time now without much success but after reading your book and trying out some of the exercises, I have managed to do some work that pleases me although I know I need a lot more practice. Thank you so much for the encouragement which your book gives!-Geri Bunting (retired teacher, Belfast ) * Customer *December 2014 DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK Unless you want to be completely addicted to painting watercolours. I never buy art books as most are an ABC on how to paint a tree, landscape, vase of flowers and everyone who reads the book produces almost identical paintings. This book will not do that. Jean teaches you techniques that you can apply to your own style of painting, so you unlock the artist within you and develop and grow as an authentic artist in your own right. I have painted subjects I never dreamt I could paint before I read this book. Jean is such a charismatic person, her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious. So, if you buy this book and cannot concentrate on anything for thinking of painting, or can't sleep for the same reason, don't blame me, I did try and warn you! p.s. The first painting I did after learning Jean's techniques helped me secure my first exhibition! * Laura Wilson - Waterstones *May 12 Well haven't finished it yet but am savouring every page!!!! It's stopped me eating and sleeping a good thing maybe??? Haven't done a book review before (and after reading this you may think "hope she never does one again!!!!") and maybe I should wait until it's finished but am just a lot excited about this one!!!!! It is full of Jean's secrets written in her own easy, inimitable, encouraging way, as if she is talking intimately to you, the reader. She shares moments and memories of her past..... a lovely insight into the Jean we don't get to hear about..... I have done the first few exercises in the book following just what she did and guess what?????? They turned out and I think the penny might finally be dropping. If any of you have been lucky enough to either see Jean demonstrate or go to a workshop, she makes things look so easy.... well we all know it isn't... right???? Easy comes from years of practice, experience and desire, but.... and this is what I really want to share, this book opens the door and certainly for me has given me those all so sought after glimpses of what I'm looking for...... that's why I was so excited about it and apart from everything else, retiring, exhibition on Saturday, holiday next Wednesday etc etc....... well you can now understand why I couldn't sleep. I said to my husband at 3:30 I think I might get up... he said "What are you going to do.... paint?" Of course I said no....... hmmmm thought she indignantly does he really think I was going to get up and paint at 3;30 in the morning, how ridiculous!!!!!! Am beginning to think he knows me too well (note to self... need to become more mysterious!!!) So hope to read and reread more today and the next weeks and months of course, I think Jean was wise to have this published in hardback as I think it will become one of those "bible" sort of books which in paperback may become too worn!!! Am sorry for those of you who have to wait for a copy, it will be worth the wait I promise!!! Will keep you updated and maybe write another review when I have had more chance to work through and digest... it is a treat for sure. I normally like to flick through books before I buy but I had faith that this one would be what I was looking for and it is ...... in bucket loads!!!!!! It is a book full of hope, colour and life and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!! * judithfarnworthart.blogspot.co.uk *May 12 Dear Jean, I know we have never met but i wanted to write to express my thoughts to you. I received your stunning new book today and I simply cant wait to try out some ideas. I began working as an artist a year ago after a lot of personal trauma. Over the years I have dipped into a lot of art books, but I have to say that this is the most inspiring and liberating book that I have ever seen. Thank you so very much, and i wish you every success. Yours in gratitude, liz Bolloten * Customer *June 12 This is one of those books where the above-the-title billing for the author is actually more than just a conceit. To call this book just “Atmospheric Watercolours” would completely miss the point. Atmosphere is one of the hardest words to define in relation to art. On the one hand, we all know what we mean by it: it’s the sense of time and place that can be achieved by the use of washes, glazes and wet-in-wet, but also by composition and colour choice – pretty much the standard technical arsenal, in fact. On the other hand, it’s a woolly term that really means nothing except that the work has an essential quality of je ne sais quoi. So that’s a good start, then. And what do we actually have here? Well, it’s easy to say what Jean Haines’ work is. It’s definitely well into the spectrum of abstraction, and she uses a lot of washes to create a sense of what her subjects are about, more than just what they are. Is this “atmospheric”? Not really, if you buy my definition, but do please feel free to come up with a better word. I do think we’re getting there, though. I don’t think this could really be classed as an instruction manual, even though there are plenty of demonstrations and lots of discussions of how Jean works – for someone with such a personal style, she’s actually very good at this part. Yes, it’s practical, but the approach isn’t half so much do-this, do-that as an analysis of Jean’s own working methods and, through that, showing you how you can achieve not so much the same thing, as something similar. This is perhaps a first, and an invaluable aid for anyone wanting to move beyond representation and to develop their own way of describing what they see. If this sounds like the heart of abstraction, it is, and this book is probably one of the best ways of learning about a technique that so frequently defies description and really has to be absorbed rather than learnt. If you’ve followed what I’ve said, then I’m pretty sure you’ll like the book. If not, proceed with caution; it may be that you’re not ready for it yet – but persevere! * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsA unique and inspiring book suitable for people of all artistic abilities. Packed full of exercises, projects and easy-to-follow advice, as well as numerous finished paintings to excite and inspire you. Jean Haines’ techniques can be applied to flowers, landscapes, buildings, animals and people, so whatever subject you are interested in, you will find it in this book.

Techniques range from dyeing and piecing to embroidery and working with dissovable fabrics which are accompanied by six step-by-step projects with expert advice, plus an inspirational gallery of vibrant and contemporary designs. * Sew *This book is full of lovely designs to produce lovely designs as great presents for bird loving friends - like works of art!! * Joanna Terry *An amazing book with clear descriptive photographs and instructions. Contains some beautiful projects and truly quite inspirational. I am currently attempting to reproduce "Blackbirds". * Claire Cleaver *What a glorious book this is. So many clear beautiful images. It is a feast for the eyes. Clearly written, so many useful hints and tips. Its a pleasure to read. Ideas and projects to follow, inspiration to keep you busy, and to keep dipping into. If birds and fabric and stitch are your thing, this is the book for you. * Judith Clarke *This is a beautifully illustrated book with thick glossy pages, the sort of book that makes a lovely gift for anyone into needlecraft. The book has six projects but its the inspiration from these projects that sets the book apart. Loads of gorgeous photos of the pictures/project that you could make and details of how to mount to a picture frame for instance or turn into a cushion. The book has five pages of templates of birds, boats and other related items to help bring your projects to life * Amanda Hayes *Issue 37 Rachel Sumner describes herself as an artist who uses textile techniques. She is also a self confessed hoarder of recycled materials. In this highly imaginative reference book she showcases the ways of capturing the essence of birds through the medium of stitch, using old pieces of fabric, recycled haberdashery items and found objects (nature-inspired postage stamps and tangled fishing thread). Incorporating techniques such as dyeing, working with disolvable fabric, applique and machine embroidery she explores designing, sketching, laying out, stitching scenes featuring puffins, seagulls, chickens, and blackbirds, in six different projects inspired by nature. Chapters focus on materials, equipment, designs, techniques, capturing character, depicting a scene and telling a story. Templates, photographs and simple instructions to help you along the way in this truly inspirational gallery of ideas. * Reloved *Search Press’ Stitched Textiles series focuses on contemporary textile artists’ work and features staged projects and techniques using a wide range of materials. This latest title shows how to depict birds through the medium of fabric and thread. This series is a good way of learning how to use a wide range of materials and methods including dyeing, appliqué, hand and machine embroidery, dissolvable fabrics and even found objects. If you have a stash of fabric scraps left over from other projects this book has many ways of using them up to make collage pictures. The bulk of this book is taken up with six projects but the first part focuses on what you need, an overview of techniques used and information about mounting, design and creating backgrounds. If you want to go into dyeing cloth and trying out shibori techniques the information here is not full enough for beginners but serves more to suggest another way of using fabrics. The projects themselves are a great way of learning to make pictures out of stitched cloth and you can choose from puffins, blackbirds, gulls (two projects depict these), chickens and an ark filled with birds. Each project features a series of captioned photographs including close ups of key areas. There are also galleries of other works by the author which briefly outline methods used and at the back all the templates are given at 50% size. I love the way you can make a whole picture out of scraps and most people who already use textiles in their crafts will have most if not all of the materials and tools already. A good addition to the series. * myshelf.com *I really didn't know you could create such amazing pictures with textiles. If you have never used textiles in this way before don't worry this book is going to take you through everything you need to know. You learn all about the equipment you will need. How to create your design and sketch out your ideas. If you struggle to create designs it's okay as the book takes you through using artworks as inspiration. The book then takes you through how you will be using the fabric and how to use the colours. You are then taught how to use the fabrics to build up a background, create a foreground, stitching, final touches and how to adapt your design. Types of fabric selection are discussed so that you can make the right decisions. The book even takes you through how to dye fabrics as well as using dissolvable fabric. The techniques you learn can be used to create any textile picture you want. You can either follow the designs in the book or create your own designs. You are then taken through a number of designs so that you can recreate them: Puffin, Chickens, Seagulls on a Boat, Blackbirds, Seagull on a Beach and Bird Ark. You also have galleries throughout of different designs that you can make. At the back of the book are the templates you will need to create the designs within the book. The book is inspiring and informative. http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2016/09/stitched-textiles-birds-search-press.html. * Crochet Addict UK *This is a most inspirational book, beautifully illustrated and with clear instructions and interesting insights into how Rachel Sumner gets her ideas. I have long been an admirer of her work and have some of her cards but this book is just stunning. There are step by step guides on finding inspiration, building a background, using colour and everything you need to adapt your own ideas. There are techniques and stitches to use, even how to mount your work in different ways. The quality of the illustrations is excellent and the bird subjects beautifully represented. Not only is it a wonderful book to keep for yourself but also a brilliant present for anyone who likes textile work, I can't praise it enough, must get some fabric sorted now! * Sonia Hawes *This book is just full of gorgeous inspiration and great basic starter tips for anyone who would love to begin this beautiful art form. It has plenty to attract both a beginner and a more experienced artist and is full of great photos to inspire you. I am definitely going to start today by building up a collection of suitable materials in line with my chosen colour scheme! * Gill Phipps *This book is full of the most gorgeous birds to stitch backed up with useful tips and techniques to try. Six original step-by-step projects complete with templates and suggestions for fabrics to use with helpful advice on how to build up the backgrounds and foregrounds. The instructions on dyeing fabrics and use of dissolvable fabric were particularly valuable. I really adored the Puffin,Chickens and Seagull projects which just captured the attributes of these birds so well and can't wait to get started with creating my own stitched picture and cushion versions of these. You do need a sewing machine, preferably one equipped for embroidery but with even a very basic one it should be possible to produce some pleasing results. * Sassie Clarke *I really can't see anyone not getting excited about this book. Everyone loves birds and Rachel's birds really are chirpy. You'll love the interpretations in stitch of blackbirds, chickens, puffins and seagulls. Find 6 step-by-step projects to create birds plus galleries of finished work. Create a lovely bird ark or tell a story with stitch. You'll discover all the techniques used to make the birds - dyeing, dissolvable fabric, piecing by machine and hand embroidery. Work up a background with fabric scraps then create foreground elements, discovering how to use plain and patterned fabrics and stitch to advantage. This is a very colourful book full of wondrous stitch. Templates are provided at the back of the book. * YarnsandFabrics.co.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 10 Equipment 14 Design 16 Techniques 26 Capturing Character 44 Puffin 46 Chickens 52 Gallery 60 Depicting a Scene 68 Seagulls on a boat 70 Blackbirds 80 Gallery 90 Telling a Story 98 Seagulls on a Beach 100 Bird Ark 108 Gallery 118 Templates  124 Index 128

Book SynopsisSarah Thomas''s study moves beyond the image of the brooding, destructive man at odds with employers and his own star status to explore the complexity of Mason's career and star persona. Her analysis is structured around three strands central to understanding stardom: the star persona, industry and power, and screen performance. Thomas addresses the incredible range of Mason's star career 1930s quota quickies'; 1940s Gainsborough melodramas; the desperate IRA man in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out' (1947); from the 1950s onwards, Hollywood classics including starring in Hitchcock's North by Northwest' (1959) and playing Humbert Humbert in Kubrick's Lolita' (1962). She also considers in depth his undervalued post-1962 career, off-screen celebrity status, non-film work, comic and vocal performances, and the star's own self-commentary. In doing so, she offers a new perspective on such subjects as power and powerlessness; public image and national identity, contextualizing Mason''s career in wid

She demonstrates how the visual interpretation of land as landscape reflects and reinforces contemporary political, social and environmental attitudes. She also asks what is at stake in landscape photography now through placing critical appraisal of key examples of work by photographers working in, for example, the USA, in Europe, Scandinavia and Baltic areas, within broader art historical and political concerns. Book SynopsisThis 1997 revised and updated biography of the celebrated artist, using the mass of new material which has come to light since Holroyd's two-volume first edition in the mid 1970s, reveals the complete story of John and his circle, from one of our great biographers. John studied at the Slade with his sister Gwen before both of them went to Paris. He lived and worked at feverish speed and his drawings were astonishing for their fluid lyrical line, their vigor and spontaneity. His life became a complex tale of two cities, London and Paris, of two wives and many families. 'The age of Augustus John was dawning,' Virginia Woolf wrote of the year 1908, which saw many portraits of writers and artists and small glowing oil panels of figures in a landscape. His most striking work was done in the years before the First World War and when he died in 1961 his death was treated as a landmark signaling the end of a distant era.Trade ReviewSuperb biography. . . . The celebration of a man of enormous vitality, intermittent zest and remarkable magnetism, and of the most naturally gifted artist that the English-speaking world has produced in the last hundred years; and the tragedy of a man who never came to terms with himself... Quiller Publishing Ltd The Forgotten Country House: The Rise and Fall of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis fine Palladian house known as New Park was built between 1777 and 1783 and became part of the golden age of the Georgian country house. Its owner, James Sutton, was one of a new breed of landowners, benefitting from the proceeds of the boom in late eighteenth century trade and from local political influence. The house was a celebration of the dynamism and success of Georgian Devizes, built on its thriving wool trade. As neoclassicism became the defining style for the late eighteenth English country house, New Park, later re-named Roundway Park, perfectly represented the high ambition of the age, the product of the prestigious architect, James Wyatt, and landscape designer, Humphry Repton. Roundway continued to prosper in the Victorian and Edwardian eras under the ownership of the Colston family of Bristol fame. In 1938, on the death of Rosalind Colston, the first Lady Roundway, the house and estate were, on the surface, indistinguishable from their Victorian heyday. But just sixteen years later, the estate had been sold and the house largely demolished as the effects of family tragedy and the weight of social and economic change took their toll. The Forgotten Country House tells for the first time the story of Roundway's rise and fall, the people who built and owned it, lived and worked there, and the contribution they made to their local community. It paints a vivid picture of the lives of gentry families who far outnumbered their more aristocratic counterparts and who played a central role in the rural communities that characterised much of Britain up until the mid-twentieth century. Part family history, part love letter to the English country house, Simon Baynes draws on family papers and new research to pay a fitting, evocative tribute not just to his ancestors, but also to a lost world and the people who lived in it.Trade ReviewHistories of lost country houses involve sophisticated detective work. Simon Baynes’ new book is impressive for its wide ranging research and his absorbing text illustrates just how many stories these houses have to tell. -- Marcus BinneyThe Forgotten Country House is a fascinating history of a colourful family and a remarkable building told with passion and authority. -- Simon ThurleyThis book is a comprehensive record of a notable country house in Wiltshire. Many long lost photographs and personal family details have been documented under one cover by Simon Baynes and his late father to create this excellent publication. -- John GirvanThis handsomely produced volume recounts the history of Roundway Park in Wiltshire, a now mostly demolished Georgian mansion... Part house, part family history, the final decades at Roundway are tinged with sadness... [The] book is a fitting tribute to the house and estate that it commemorates. -- Historic HousesQuiller Publishing has once again done an excellent job in presenting this enthralling photographic and literary exposition which has been researched thoroughly by author Simon Baynes... Book SynopsisIn 1975, David Shepherd wrote The Man Who Loves Giants – an autobiography. Even though he was only forty-four, he had already achieved more than most could have in three lifetimes. In the intervening years, until his death in 2017, he painted a huge variety of subjects; founded the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation; renovated and restored everything from steam engines to dolls’ houses; and appeared on both radio and television. ‘Being the extrovert I am,’ he once said, ‘I like things large and exciting … especially elephants …’ However, this enthusiasm wasn’t restricted to animals; it extended to his love and ownership of several full-sized steam engines, including locomotive number 92203, otherwise known as Black Prince. David’s friends ranged from showbiz celebrities to well-known sportsmen and women; and British and European royalty to internationally influential politicians and presidents. He was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands for his services to conservation in Zambia, and the Order of Distinguished Service, First Class, by President Kaunda. Her Majesty The Queen presented David with the OBE and CBE. David’s first gallery successes were not of the African wildlife for which he is now best known. London scenes, planes, boats and trains have long featured in his portfolio – as do English landscapes and bygone rural life. Since David’s autobiography, no book has dealt so comprehensively with his life, painting, and conservation work as this biography by J. C. Jeremy Hobson, professional author and David’s youngest son-in-law. With access to family archives and photographs, private diaries and reminiscences, this is a unique portrait of a remarkable man.

In three richly interlinked but distinct 'acts' - Politics, Kinship and Craft - Sarah Thornton compares and contrasts answers to the simple but profound question: what is an artist? 33 Artists in 3 Acts draws on hundreds of personal encounters with the world's most important artists, to ask what it means to be making artworks in different parts of the world today. With Thornton as expert guide and trusted insider, we have unprecedented access to the lives of the artists, from late-night Skype chats with Ai Weiwei to taxi rides with Maurizio Cattelan on the way to and from the show that announces his death. We join Thornton as she rummages through artists' studios, homes and solo shows, inquiring about everything from their bank accounts to their bedrooms. The result is a series of cinematic experiences, which juxtapose artists in thought-provoking ways, and build up narratives that end with epiphanies. 33 Artists in 3 Acts is a generational touchstone, a powerful triptych and gripping anti-monograph about truth, integrity, credibility and recognition. Essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art, this masterful act of storytelling will also delight any reader seeking to understand creative lives.

What if I told you there was a group of men on the front lines who didn’t carry machine guns or drive tanks; a new kind of soldier, one charged with saving, not destroying. From caves to castles in a thrilling race against time, these men risked their lives daily to save hundreds of thousands of the world’s greatest works of art. It is excellent that Mr Edsel has now recorded this remarkable episode, and I am grateful to him for devoting so much energy to telling the stories of those involved -- Anne Olivier BellIn the great storytelling tradition of my longtime friend, Stephen Ambrose, Monuments Men is a marvelous addition to the many great books on World War II and is a reminder that we fought to save western civilization as well as our freedom. Book SynopsisAs we stand on the cusp of a fundamental restructuring of the housing and building industries, this book provides timely insights into the promise of prefabricated housing. The idea of a more industrialised approach to house building is not a new one: since the 19th century, designers, inventors, engineers, builders, developers, and entrepreneurs have all been fascinated by the idea of the factory-built, modular home. But international housing affordability crises, emerging technologies, and concerns for more sustainable building practices have given a new urgency to the need to transform building construction in the 21st century. Richly illustrated and drawing on historical examples and contemporary design studies, the book takes the reader through the foundations of prefab, leading up to a discussion of contemporary problems and opportunities. It includes a broad international survey of leading companies and their products, and draws on research from an international team of experts in the field. Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Walter Segal: Self-Built Architect

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a study of the architect Walter Segal (1907-1985): his background, influences, thoughts, writings, his unique approach to architectural practice (and his built work) and his enduring impact on architecture and attitudes to housing across the world. It firstly sets out his formative years in Continental Europe. Segal’s father was an eminent modernist painter and a founder of the Dada movement. Walter grew up surrounded by leaders of the European avant-garde. Qualifying as architect in Germany just as the Nazi party came to power, Segal moved to Switzerland, Mallorca, Egypt and finally to London in 1936. The second section focuses on Walter Segal’s central theme of popular housing, his unique and independent form of professional practice, how he managed to spread his ideas through writing and teaching, and how his architecture developed towards the timber-frame form known world-wide today as ‘the Segal system’, which could be used by people to build their own houses. The third section follows the development of the timber-frame form known world-wide today as ‘the Segal method’ and how it came to be used by people to build and indeed design their own houses. This culminated at the time of Segal’s death in two areas of self-built public authority social housing in London - housing which, nearly half a century later, remains as unique and highly desirable neighbourhoods. The final section explores the legacy offered by Segal to younger generations; how his work and example, half a century after his timber ‘method’ was developed, leads to the possibility of making, and then living within, communities whose places are constructed with a flexible, easily assembled, planet-friendly timber-frame building system today and tomorrow.Trade Review‘This book is a huge pleasure because it reveals the man and revels in his energy and wit. Book SynopsisEllen Gallagher (b.1965) is one of the most celebrated painters of her generation, coming to prominence in the mid-1990s in the wake of the so-called 'culture wars' and the art world's controversial embrace of identity-politics and multiculturalism. In this in-depth look at her oeuvre, Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith unpacks the complexities of her richly layered paintings, examining themes such as identity, race, displacement and the ecological environment, which Gallagher has explored throughout her work. The author takes the reader from Gallagher's early years — looking at her formative influences — through her engagement, from the late 1990s on, with the inherited modernist forms of the monochrome and the grid and with the violence and division at the root of modernism itself. Also explored are her phantasmagoric explorations of oceanic life, which draw on the discoveries of natural science, the traumatic history of the Atlantic slave trade and the speculative fictions of Afrofuturism. For anyone interested in contemporary art and the ways particular artists are expanding its borders, in form and content, this is essential reading. Book SynopsisExploring the ways in which painting, applied design and illustration intertwined over the course of the accomplished career of Paul Nash (1889-1946), this book provides a new perspective on one of the most gifted and celebrated English artists of the twentieth century. Skilfully navigating the diversity of Nash’s design output, which drew in illustration, book jackets, posters, set design, pattern papers, fabrics, glass, ceramics and photography, in the context of Nash’s painting and wider pre-occupations, James King presents an artist who strove to resolve his artistic vision. With Nash's work informed by seismic shifts within the visual arts during his lifetime – from the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the one hand, to Surrealism and Abstraction on the other – this fascinating book reveals the considerable gifts that allowed Nash to create a wholly original vision in turn.Trade Review'This unusually beautiful octavo book shows that the design work of English surrealist, landscape painter and official war artist Paul Nash (1889-1946), although spasmodic and commissioned in many media, was a central part of his production.' – The Art NewspaperTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Introduction; Chapter 1: The Artist as Acrobat; Chapter 2: Meeting Places; Chapter 3: The Artist Outside the Theatre; Chapter 4: An Artist Turned Loose; Chapter 5: 'Vast Primitive Things'; Chapter 6: Marketing Modernism; Chapter 7: A New Eye; Chapter 8: Fine and Applied Art; Notes; Bibliography; Index

  • Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd London 1870-1914: A City at its Zenith

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book conveys the excitement, diversity and richness of London at a time when the city was arguably at the height of its power, uniqueness and attraction. Balancing the social, the topographical and the visible aspects of the great city, author Andrew Saint uses buildings, architecture, literature and art as a way into understanding social and historical phenomena. While many volumes on Victorian London focus on poverty (an issue which is included in this book), the author here provides a broader picture of life in the city. It is enlivened with a rich line-up of colourful characters, including Baron Albert Grant; Henry Mayers Hyndman and his connections with Karl Marx, William Morris and George Bernard Shaw; John Burns; Octavia Hill; Aubrey Beardsley and the artistic bohemians; Alfred Harmsworth and the Garrett sisters, and includes insightful quotes on London by esteemed authors such as Trollope, Henry James and Rudyard Kipling. Divided into four long chapters, each dealing with a decade, London’s evolution between 1870 and 1914 comes across clearly. Although not intended to be a complete history, it does cover all the most important historical developments in London and London life.  Particular issues are allotted to the decade in which they seem to have been most critical. Topics covered include: the creation of new neighbourhoods and roads; how the Victorians dealt with their housing crisis; why certain architectural styles were preferred; and the fashion for focusing on certain types of building, such as ice rinks, schools, houses, hospitals, fire stations, exhibition halls, water works, music halls, recital rooms and pubs. This is an up-to-date, readable and well-illustrated book which embraces the whole in a positive spirit. Saint’s interpretation of London’s history in the period covered is unashamedly one of progress in the face of great odds. He shows that, in almost every aspect, it was a much better city in1914 than in 1870. At a time when local autonomy in Britain has been ruthlessly downgraded and London’s face is every year coarsened further by money-led developments, this story of gradual and earnest improvement may have lessons to teach.Trade Review' a virtuoso urban history' – RIBA Journal'Saint magnificently conveys just how much shifted in the decades he describes. A superb architectural historian, he is of course completely assured in accounting for changing fashions in architecture. But he is equally compelling in his discussion of the impact of the telephone and electric light on London… He writes convincingly about politics as well as about social and cultural life… The outcome of a lifetime’s labour, Andrew Saint’s London is a triumph.' – Literary Review'Saint’s page-turner chronicle offers an immersive historical perspective on many of the struggles that Londoners are facing today.' – Morning Star'When Saint writes about London’s built environment he is always captivating, and no matter how much we think we know about London on the ground he can always tell us something new.' – Times Literary SupplementTable of ContentsPreface; London in the 1870s; London in the 1880s; London in the 1890s; London 1900-1914; Sources and References; Index

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWoodland Imagery in Northern Art reconnects us with the woodland scenery that abounds in Western painting, from Albrecht Dürer’s intense studies of verdant trees, to the works of many other Northern European artists who captured 'the truth of vegetation' in their work. These incidents of remarkable scenery in the visual arts have received little attention in the history of art, until now. Prosperetti brings together a set of essays which are devoted to the poetics of the woodlands in the work of the great masters, including Claude Lorrain, Jan van Eyck, Jacob van Ruisdael, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci, amongst others. Through an examination of aesthetics and eco-poetics, this book draws attention to the idea of lyrical naturalism as a conceptual bridge that unites the power of poetry with the allurement of the natural world. Engagingly written and beautifully illustrated throughout, Woodland Imagery in Northern Art strives to stimulate the return of the woodlands to the places where they belong — in people’s minds and close to home. Trade Review'Woodland Imagery is a beautiful piece of writing. Akin to the living objects that it treats, the book branches out unconfinedly from its core, moving towards the light along varied and lively paths. The author writes in economical sentences pleasing in cadence and rhythm. Her descriptions of woodland paintings are notably sensitive, delightful, and revealing. Academic jargon and endnotes are held to a minimum. These features make the book a joy to read accessible to a broad audience.' – David A. Book SynopsisElisabetta Sirani of Bologna (1638-1665) was one of the most innovative and prolific artists of the Bolognese School. Not only a painter, she was also a printmaker and a teacher. Based on extensive archival documentation and primary sources — including inventories, sale catalogues and her work diary — Elisabetta Sirani provides an overview of the life, work, critical fortune and legacy of this successful Baroque artist. Placing her within the context of the post-Tridentine society that both inhibited and supported her, Modesti examines Sirani's influence on many of the artists studying at Bologna's school for professional women artists, as well as her significance in the professionalisation of women’s artistic practice in the seventeenth century.Beautifully illustrated throughout, Elisabetta Sirani focuses on women’s agency. More specifically, it explores Sirani’s identity as both a woman and an artist, including her professional ambition, self-fashioning and literary construction as Bologna’s pre-eminent cultural heroine.Trade Review‘Modesti’s account of the paintings demonstrates that, while Sirani naturally learned from the work of others, her compositions and execution were original. Book SynopsisThe most ambitious project of Henry Avray Tipping, the influential architectural editor of Country Life, Mounton was a new country house and garden, designed without limitations of expense to be the perfect expression of his immense knowledge of history, architecture and horticulture. All was designed to impress a distinguished social circle. However, within weeks of its completion, the Great War started. The world of English country-house living changed irrevocably, so Tipping never saw his hopes for the house come to fruition. Featuring a wealth of previously unseen material including correspondence, articles and illustrations, this book insightfully details the design and building of the home H. Avray Tipping created for himself with the help of the young Chepstow architect Eric Carwardine Francis. It also gives a rich and evocative portrait of Tipping and his friends, with visits from Lloyd George and from Tipping’s gardening colleagues, including Harold Peto, Gertrude Jekyll and William Robinson. The grand layout of the Mounton gardens on the plateau above a limestone gorge included a 24-pillar pergola, terraces overlooking the Severn estuary, a two-storey tea house, a rock garden and remarkable and innovative water gardens. Over time, the house was neglected and the magnificent gardens became overgrown. Mounton could so easily have been demolished and yet, a hundred years after Tipping completed it, a loving work of restoration of house and gardens was launched. The final two chapters reveal the careful adaptation of the interiors of Mounton House and the spectacular remaking of the gardens by the renowned garden designer Arne Maynard, all fully illustrated with plans and striking new photography. This is the story of the creation, destruction and regeneration of a singular vision.Trade Review‘a pleasure to read in one sitting’ ‘The book is lavishly illustrated, including both archive material and newly-commissioned photographs by John Campbell’ – Dr Paul Giangrande, TopiariusTable of Contents1: The search for a setting. 2: The Mounton water garden. 3: Mounton House. 4: The gardens of Mounton House. 5: From high summer to wartime. 6: Decline and fall. 7: The recreation of a house. 8: The resurrection of a garden.

  • The Wooden Architecture of Northern Europe: From

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd The Wooden Architecture of Northern Europe: From

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the wealth of wooden architecture that is to be found in Northern Europe, in particular, the Fennoscandian Peninsula. This distinct region, which includes Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Republic of Karelia, was dominated by coniferous forest and remained until well into the 20th century a largely rural society. Wood was seen as a living material - one that was permeated with myth and folklore - while the forest itself formed the background to everyday life. Indeed, no single source of material wealth has contributed more to the economy, art and culture of Fennoscandia than the forests. Nowhere is this contribution clearer than in the region's historic buildings, the vast majority of which were constructed in wood up until the late 19th century. This is the first book to examine and record the distinctive wooden architecture of this region from the early medieval period to the early 20th century. Structured according to different wood types, it concentrates on domestic and religious buildings, as these formed the great bulk of historic architecture in the peninsula over many centuries. It begins by setting out the geographical, social and historic background, before discussing the way in which two different timber-building traditions emerged in the region. It then provides a detailed examination of different types of dwellings (rural and urban) and storage lofts, followed by a section on Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, along with their free-standing bell-towers. The book concludes with a chapter outlining the development of wooden domestic and religious buildings during the closing decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe history of modern architecture has been well covered in the classical surveys of Sigfried Giedion, Kenneth Frampton, William Curtis, Alan Colquhoun, and others who traced the developments of this major movement that dominated the architectural landscape of the 20th century until the beginning of the 1970s, when a major contesting movement appeared on the scene, labelled as Post-Modernism. Taking a similar approach, this book explores the different tendencies that affected the developments of the past six decades, beginning around the 1960s, when a new wind started to blow from within Modernism, leading to different reactions and counter-reactions, the effects of which are still felt today. This book provides a survey of contemporary developments, starting with an introductory chapter on the transitional period of the 1960s and then examining the different movements that followed, charting a middle course between the ‘aesthetic’ histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the ‘ideological’ histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects. Global in scope, each chapter begins with a theoretical overview of the ‘paradigm’ in question, leading to an examination of its main actors and projects. The survey concludes with a section on more recent trends, including environmental concerns that placed sustainability as one of the main objectives in architecture in parallel to an aesthetic direction that blurs the boundaries between architecture and art, relying on technological innovations to develop ever more complex forms.Table of ContentsForeword – Joan Ockman. Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd How Not to Exclude Artist Mothers (and other

Book SynopsisFor too long, artists have been told that they can't have both motherhood and a successful career. In this polemical volume, critic and campaigner Hettie Judah argues that a paradigm shift is needed within the art world to take account of the needs of artist mothers (and other parents: artist fathers, parents who don't identify with the term 'mother', and parents in other sectors of the art world). Drawing on interviews with artists internationally, the book highlights some of the success stories that offer models for the future, from alternative support networks and residency models, to studio complexes with onsite childcare, and galleries with family-friendly policies. Some artists have described motherhood as providing them with renewed focus, a new direction in their work, and even inspiration for a complete change of career. Other artists choose to keep their domestic and creative lives compartmentalised. All are placed at a disadvantage by the art world as it is currently structured. This book argues that by making changes and becoming more sensitive to the needs of artist parents, the art world has much to gain.Trade Review'Hettie Judah’s How Not to Exclude Artist Mothers and Other Parents is a manifesto for change at every level, from art schools to studios to institutions and beyond.' – Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett, The Guardian‘Judah’s important book examines the current climate of discrimination against parents who are also artists and points to the impediments of motherhood as symptomatic of wilder societal ills.
