Intellect Books Design in the Age of Change

Book SynopsisChange is inevitable. This is the only constant in our lives. Yet, change is also something that we fear. We seek comfort in the familiar, in routines and in conventions. We are afraid of things that we don't know or we don’t understand. We fear change because we don’t know how change will affect us. Change, however, is necessary for progress. Sometimes, change happens naturally due to circumstances beyond our control, and sometimes we initiate change because we can or because we must. In 2020, we experienced the biggest change of our lifetimes. For a brief moment in history, the world came to a halt. Then, everything changed. Many things that we used to take for granted no longer applied. We experienced major disruptions to our daily lives. As if in some kind of perfect storm, so many things happened all at once – global pandemic, social inequalities, climate change, racial injustices, riots and unrests, gender struggles and rapid advances of new technologies. This book started to take shape in the midst of it all, and in a way, it is a time capsule of how we experienced the birth of what became known as the 'new normal'. Designers are the kind of people who thrive in times of change. In fact, it is their job to create change. The nature of their job is such that they have to take an existing situation and change it into a better, or a more preferred situation. Some do this by relying on their imagination and personal experiences, and some use evidence-based research to inform their work. Regardless of this, many share the belief that they can somehow make the world a better place – on a micro or a macro level. During this period of massive change, Gjoko Muratovski invited ten highly influential design figures – including iconic design leaders such as Carole Bilson, Karim Rashid, Bruce Mau, Steven Heller and Don Norman – to reflect on the state of things today. In return, each one of them shares a highly personal account on why change is good. The book also features a foreword written by the president of the World Design Organisation (WDO), Srini Srinisavan, and a conclusion by one of the greatest design philosophers of our time, Ken Friedman. By looking to the past and reflecting on the present, these designers project very personal images of the future that they would like to see. The conversations are very broad, and they cover highly diverse topics. From the effects of the pandemic, to issues of race and gender, notions of beauty, technology and industry, to global and local economies, politics, power, privilege and the importance of community. A 'must-read' for anyone interested in how designers and design can change the world. Gjoko Muratovski is a university executive, award-winning designer and innovation consultant working with leading organisations, Fortune 500 companies and governments from around the world, and a fellow of the Design Research Society. Trade ReviewWith societies and economies rapidly shifting in ways that we have never seen before; all our certainties may seem to be sliding away making us feel more vulnerable than ever. Designers play an important part in reshaping a ‘new normal’ during these challenging times. This book is a testament to how designers innovate and thrive in most circumstances. The perspectives of impressive designers and thought leaders, collected in this book, gives hope for a brighter future as informed by design. -- Lisa Scharoun, Professor and Head of the School of Design, Queensland University of Technology2020 put everyone on 'pause', interrupting fast-paced routines that left little time for reflection on forces shaping where design might and should go. Although conducted during a unique year, Muratovski’s interviews reveal an important paradigm shift from industrial to social; physical to intangible; singular to plural; and functional to meaningful. These interviewees are evidence that designers have a voice, asserting through their work visions of a future grounded in consequence rather than consumption. -- Meredith Davis, Professor Emerita, North Carolina State UniversityIn Design in the Age of Change, Muratovski has captured highly important insights and ideas from a diverse group of experts for these times of massive change. These viewpoints are valuable now and will be more so in the future as they guide us to find answers to future challenges. This book should be required reading for anyone questioning where the field(s) of design are going and where you will fit in. -- Lorraine Justice, Professor and Dean Emerita of the School of DesignTable of ContentsTime capsule – Foreword by Srini R. • Intellect Books Painting in the 1980s: Reimagining the Medium

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first to explore, in depth, major painters of the period and the factors that shaped their art. Accessible to both art novice and specialist, it is written in jargon-free, readable language, blending vignettes about the soaring art market of the eighties with illuminating interpretations of paintings by leading artists from around the world. Painting in the 1980s details where and how painting embodied the zeitgeist of the 1980s in original fusions of style and content. Erpf knows each artist’s work well, and her discussions of the individual paintings are vivid and insightful. They bring the vitality of the art world in this understudied period to the fore. The individual descriptions and discussions of paintings are lively, engaging and provocative. They infuse each chapter with the author’s passion for the subject and carry the reader along. The thematics – painting as puzzle, German history, Italian place – hold each chapter together and set the foundation for the author’s original thinking and point of view. This book explores painting by a broad swathe of artists who were at the heart of that painting resurgence. The many books that examine twentieth-century art tend to emphasize painting as part of European Modernism, American Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art, with late twentieth-century painting often given short shrift. Excellent monographs and exhibition catalogues on individual artists exist, but Erpf’s intention is to counter the paucity of literature devoted to a larger group of painters. This is not a comprehensive look at all the artists who contributed to 1980s paintings revival. Gallerists, curators and art historians assigned labels such as New Image Painting, Neo-Expressionism, Italian Transavanguardia, Neo-Geo and the blanket designation Postmodernism to categorize painting in this era. Yet these classifications denote a false sense of homogeneity, which will be made clear in this book. This book’s narrative aims to excavate and analyse the art and ideas that shaped each artist’s style and their diverse and often ambiguous content. Works by the following artists are included: Nicolas Africano, Georg Baselitz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joseph Beuys, Francesco Clemente, Sandro Chia, George Condo, Enzo Cucchi, Marlene Dumas, Eric Fischl, Denise Green, Philip Guston, Peter Halley, Mary Heilmann, Neil Jenney, Donald Judd, Anselm Kiefer, Gordon Matta-Clark, Robert Moskowitz, Mimmo Paladino, A.R.Penck, Lari Pittman, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Susan Rothenberg, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, Joel Shapiro, Frank Stella and David True. The artists discussed are all well known, but the surprises are in the innovative ways the artists insisted on returning to painting in a decade when it had been pronounced dead. Their courage and creativity comes through in the text. This will appeal to artists, art and cultural historians more broadly, and is suitable as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in twentieth-century and contemporary art history. Novice art historians, art enthusiasts and collectors will also find much to enjoy here – it has appeal well beyond simply those professionally involved in the art world.Trade Review'The re-emergence of painting in the 1980s in Europe and the United States is as exciting as it is confusing. In her in-depth analysis, Rosemary Erpf counters the false sense of homogeneity and problematic art historical labels attached to painterly practices of that era. Bypassing academic theories, hers is a human and empathic approach towards individual artists at work in the studio. Combining knowledge and passion, her book shines a clarifying light on the last great reset in the history of painting.' -- Dominic van den Boogerd is an art critic and Head of Research and Education at De Ateliers, Amsterdam, where he was director from 1995 to 2018.'As "indispensable" as Gerhard Richter described painting to life, this book brilliantly weaves together accounts of painting in its decade of resurgence. Featuring close analysis alongside interviews with key participants, the book makes for a crucial companion to understanding this vital period of art history.' -- Eleanor Nairne, curator at the Barbican Art Gallery and co-editor of Basquiat: Boom for Real (2017)'Rosemary Erpf energetically and cogently takes on the chaotic, polymorphous art scene of the 1980s where localism collided with the first inklings of globalism. Focusing on the three arenas familiar to denizens of the decade—the United States, Germany and Italy—she examines how abstraction and figuration jostled one another for primacy. What we see in hindsight is the active interconnection between these stylistic approaches, the role of the legacies of the immediate pasts in those areas in shaping the work, and how the work of artists she considers propelled art to new horizons, albeit not according to usual art historical orthodoxies and definitions. A distinctive aspect of this narrative, however, is Erpf’s focus on several women artists in these discourses—notably Mary Heilmann, Jennifer Bartlett, Susan Rothenberg and Marlene Dumas—whose presences in chronicles such as this, tend to be downplayed or marginalized despite the protean nature of the painterly enterprises.' -- Lowery Stokes Sims, Kress Beinecke Professor, 2021-22 The Center, National Gallery of Art and curator emerita at the Museum of Arts and Design, NY'During the tumultuous 1980s, nothing seemed more urgent inside the New York art world than the fate of painting, and many of the issues that burst into the open then are still important today. Unlike most overviews published at the time, Painting in the 1980s strikes a careful balance between the critical reception of the work and the artists’ own explanations for what they were doing. From Bad Painting to the Italian Transvangardia and beyond, Erpf pulls together over two dozen key painters of the period, introducing readers to a pre-global art milieu when ideas about image and surface were fervently debated, and painters were leading the way to a stylistic revolution.' -- Dan Cameron is a New York-based curator, author, and educator.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction 1. • Invisible Presence: The Representation of Women

Intellect Books Invisible Presence: The Representation of Women

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book looks at the representation of female characters in French comics from their first appearance in 1905. Organised into three sections, the book looks at the representation of women as main characters created by men, as secondary characters created by men, and as characters created by women. It focuses on female characters, both primary and secondary, in the francophone comic or bande dessinée, as well as the work of female bande dessinée creators more generally. Until now these characters and creators have received relatively little scholarly attention; this new book is set to change this status quo. Using feminist scholarship, especially from well-known film and literary theorists, the book asks what it means to draw women from within a phallocentric, male-dominated paradigm, as well as how the particular medium of bande dessinée, its form as well as its history, has shaped dominant representations of women. This is the first book to study the representation of women in the French-language drawn strip. There are no other works with this specific focus, either on women in Franco-Belgian comics, or on the drawn representation of women by men. This is a very useful addition to both general discussions of French-language comics, and to discussions of women’s comics, which are focused on comics by women only. As it is written in English, and due to the popularity of comic art in Britain and the United States, this book will primarily appeal to an Anglo-American market. However, the cultural and gender studies approach this text employs (theoretical frameworks still not widely seen in non-Anglophone studies of the bande dessinée) will ensure that the text is also of interest to a Franco-Belgian audience. With a focus on an art-form which also inspires a lot of public (non-academic) enthusiasm, it will also appeal to fans of the bande dessinée (or wider comic art medium) who are interested in the representation of women in comic art, and to comics scholars on a broad scale.Trade Review'[Invisible Presence] is a fundamental book for comics scholars, whether or not their research is focused on gender studies. Catriona MacLeod’s detailed analysis of BD, and its male and female authors, is a very valuable source of information especially the vast and varied descriptive level of characters, vignettes, plots and actions. [...] I have to highlight the importance of the vindicating aspect of this volume, namely highlighting the void regarding female characters and female authors that persists in encyclopedic and historiographical volumes on BD; the difficulty of creating genealogy about 20th-century pioneering female authors, and the gaps in the creation of female characters other than by straight white women.' -- María Márquez López, International Journal of Comic Art'Catriona MacLeod's work does not rely on archival funds: that is not her perspective. However, in terms of a culturalist method of analysis nourishing a history of representations, Invisible Presence appears to be exemplary of what gender studies can bring to the study of comics.' -- Sylvain Lesage, Genre & HistoireTable of ContentsIntroduction – Women Problems SECTION 1: PRIMARY WOMEN CHARACTERS Chapter 1 – Bécassine to Barbarella…But What Came in Between? Intellect Books Punk Art History: Artworks from the European No

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe punk movement of the 1970s to early 1980s is examined as an art movement through archive research, interviews, and art historical analysis. It is about pop, pain, poetry, presence, and about a ‘no future’ generation refusing to be the next artworld avant-garde, instead choosing to be the ‘rear-guard’. Skov draws on personal interviews with punk art protagonists from London, New York, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Berlin, among others the members Die Tödliche Doris (The Deadly Doris), members of Værkstedet Værst (The Workshop Called Worst), Nina Sten-Knudsen, Marc Miller, Diana Ozon, Hugo Kaagman, as well as email correspondence with Jon Savage, Anna Banana, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. A large portion of the discussed materials stem from the protagonists' private archives, while some very public—scandalous and spectacular—events are discussed, too, such as the Prostitution exhibition at the ICA in London in 1976 and Die Große Untergangsshow (The Grand Downfall Show) in West-Berlin in 1981. The examined materials cover almost all media: paintings, drawings, bricolages, collages, booklets, posters, zines, installations, sculptures, Super 8 films, documentation of performances and happenings, body art, street art. What emerges is how crucial the concept of history was in punk at that point in time. The punk movement's rejection of the tale of progress and prosperity, as it was being propagated on both sides of the iron curtain, evidently manifested itself in punk visual art too. Central to the book is the thesis that punks placed themselves as the rear-guards, not the avant-gardes, a statement which was in made by Danish punks in 1981, when they called themselves “bagtropperne". Behind the rear-guard watchword was the rejection of the inherent notion of progress that the avant-garde name brings with it; how could a "no future" movement want to lead the way? Although aimed at students and scholars of art, design, music and performance history, the subject as well as the author’s accessible, occasionally playful style will no doubt draw readers with an interest in punk, music, and urban histories.Trade Review'Punk Art History is a dazzling and original exploration of punk’s relationship to contemporary art. Skov has produced a rigorously-researched, engaging, and accessible journey into punk’s art-historical foundations. Drawing on her PhD research, personal history, archival material, and interviews with those active within first-wave punk, Skov creates a tapestry of punk-art-history from Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and London throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Her work is so rich it could be examined within a myriad of disciplines – art, music, subcultural studies, history, psychology – however, as a writer and researcher of punk and philosophy I found the philosophical threads running throughout Punk Art History the most fascinating and insightful aspect of her work. [...] Punk’s beauty lies in its ability to simultaneously embody both death and creation, and Skov demonstrates the plentiful ways in which punk-art captured this paradox. Furthermore, she eschews the ‘punk-as-postmodernism’ argument in favour of ‘punk-as-post-historical’, a reading which allows for a more fruitful discussion. [...] There is so much more to this work than I have managed to capture here – you’ll have to read it to find out.' Full review at Loud Women -- Grace Healy, Loud Women'Capturing the sharp, subversive energy that fueled punk art and music, Punk Art History is a blistering, scintillating chronicle of rebellious brilliance' -- Foreword'Skov describes incendiary punk artworks in vivid detail and with an eye for humor. The book is equally for scholars and for punk kids in cities with DIY music scenes.' -- Sarah Wolberg, Library Journal'What Skov has achieved with this book is to shine the light on a much-ignored part of punk, pulling on exemplary research and an insightful vision to illuminate an important art movement. It will be a sourcebook on the subject for many years to come. It is an essential addition to any serious punk library. Skov is a Danish art historian, author and curator based in Berlin. She works on the subjects of music, art and sexuality, with a historical focus on Surrealism and the punk movement of the 1970–80s. She is also an international affiliate of the Punk Scholars Network, and it’s clear from this book that she knows, and loves, her subject well' Full review at Louder Than War -- Mark Ray, Louder Than War“If you have ever wondered why you read about Marcel Duchamp in the morning, visit Kippenberger exhibitions in the afternoon, and listen to Black Flag or Suicide in a club at night, this is your book. It reveals the suspicion we’ve always had about the deep affinity between contemporary art and punk, that appropriation and do-it-yourself are the same, as much as the Sex Pistols’ ‘no future’ and Arthur Danto’s ‘The Death of Art.’ Marie Arleth Skov had that suspicion, because this is also a personal book: a story full of affinities shared in a wild cry that longs to destroy art in order to change life.” -- David G. Torres, art critic, curator, and professor, Barcelona“Punk Art History is an energetic, unique, and engaging exploration of punk’s relationship to both art and the associated discourse of art history. Marie Arleth Skov takes you along on a sometimes chaotic and dangerous journey, working the pressure points of her material focus with great detail, accuracy, and crossdisciplinary analysis.” -- Ian Trowell, independent scholar and writer, Cambridge“As an art historian who is both a fan and a scholar of punk, I have been waiting for someone to write this book! Punk Art History is the first real scholarly survey of both the art-historical influences and visual culture of the artists to emerge from punk in Europe and the United States. Rigorously researched and accessibly written, spanning Duchamp to Divine to Die Tödliche Doris, Marie Arleth Skov has finally written an art history that is truly punk AF.” -- Maria Elena Buszek, curator and professor, University of Colorado Denver'Punk Art History, which describes the history of artists, works and exhibitions that consciously stepped aside from the mainstream of art, is a refreshing reading experience precisely because it looks at Art history of the turn of the 1970s and 1980s from a fresh angle. Although the subculture formed around punk rock has already been studied in the 1970s, the areas of interest have recently expanded, as Skov brings out in this book, for example women's agency or scenes outside the Anglo-American context. Punk culture is also studied in new disciplines. Skov also reminds me that art history is a discipline where the study of punk culture is relatively new.' -- Riikka Niemelä, Tahiti - art history as a science [translated from Finnish through Google]Table of ContentsAcknowledgements 1 Prelude 1.1 What are we looking at? The World Aflame embraces not only the total conflagrations of 1914–18 and 1939–45 and the international tensions, conflicting ideologies and malign economic forces that set them in train, but also the civil wars of the interwar period in Ireland and Spain, wars in Latin America, Britain's imperial travails in such places as Ireland, Somalia and Palestine, and events on the domestic 'fronts' of the belligerent nations. Like The Colour of Time, this is a collaboration between the gifted Brazilian artist Marina Amaral, and the leading British historian Dan Jones. • A Catalogue of the Sculpture Collection at Wilton

Archaeopress A Catalogue of the Sculpture Collection at Wilton

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Wilton House sculptures constituted one of the largest and most celebrated collections of ancient art in Europe. Originally comprising some 340 works, the collection was formed around the late 1710s and 1720s by Thomas Herbert, the eccentric 8th Earl of Pembroke, who stubbornly ‘re-baptized’ his busts and statues with names of his own choosing. His sources included the famous collection of Cardinal Mazarin, assembled in Paris in the 1640s and 1650s, and recent discoveries on the Via Appia outside Rome. Earl Thomas regarded the sculptures as ancient – some of them among the oldest works of art in existence – but in fact much of the collection is modern and represents the neglected talents of sixteenth-and seventeenth-century artists, restorers and copyists who were inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture. About half of the original collection remains intact today, adorning the Gothic Cloisters that were built for it two centuries ago. After a long decline, accelerated by the impact of the Second World War, the sculptures have been rehabilitated in recent years. They include masterpieces of Roman and early modern art, which cast fresh light on Graeco-Roman antiquity, the classical tradition, and the history of collecting. Illustrated with specially commissioned photographs, this catalogue offers the first comprehensive publication of the 8th Earl’s collection, including an inventory of works dispersed from Wilton. It re-presents his personal vision of the collection recorded in contemporary manuscripts. At the same time, it dismantles some of the myths about it which originated with the earl himself, and provides an authoritative archaeological and art-historical analysis of the artefacts.Trade Review'This volume on the marbles at Wilton House forms an impressive addition to the literature on the privately owned collections of antiquities in Britain.' – Clare Hornsby, Journal of the History of Collections (2021)'This impressive book is the first comprehensive publication of the sculptures assembled in the early eighteenth century at Wilton House near Salisbury in Wiltshire by Thomas Herbert (1656–1733), eighth Earl of Pembroke... This book is a must for anyone interested in classical art and its subsequent artistic history, interpretation, and reception.' – Mark Merrony, Antiqvvs, Issue 9, Winter 2021/22'Attentive readers will glean that a number of pieces sold off in the last century have returned to Wilton, a poignant demonstration of the current generation’s devotion to preserving the family’s important classical legacy. Stewart, too, advances this effort; his up-to-date, informative catalogue admirably succeeds in introducing the 150 or so sculptures on view at Wilton today to a scholarly audience. His work clears away the many cobwebs that have entangled the reception of Wilton’s antiquities and lays a solid foundation for future investigations.' – Elizabeth Bartman (2022): American Journal of Archaeology‘P. Stewart does not fail to capture the personality of Pembroke, to evoke its eccentricity – which has earned a number of works preposterous identifications – but also its culture, which was also reflected in an impressive collection old books and medals, successively sold between 1828 and 1920. What was undoubtedly the largest collection of antiques in the kingdom and a real tourist attraction of which the guides of the 18th century keep the memory had almost sunk into oblivion and it is all the credit of William, 18th Earl of Pembroke and 15th Earl of Montgomery, and the Wilton Trustees for restoring it to some luster by truly resuscitating it, at the price of redemptions in public sales where reappeared certain works and research in the various dependencies of the area where a few items had gone astray in conservation conditions often deplorable, to have carried out certain restorations and decided to entrust P. Stewart the task of producing this catalog, which he has done all the more exemplary that the difficulties were numerous. …this large volume is very well edited (beautiful matte paper, sturdy hardback and illustrated dust jacket) by Archaeopress Publishing Ltd.’ – translation of Jean-Charles Balty (2022): L’Antiquité Classique 90Table of ContentsPreface ; Image Credits ; Introduction ; Catalogue ; Statues, Statuettes, and Herms ; Busts and Heads ; Reliefs and Miscellaneous Objects ; Architectural Elements ; Plates ; Appendix 1 Works Formerly in the Collection ; Appendix 2 Concordance to Michaelis ; Index of Names and Places

With clear step-by-step instructions accompanying each design, and beautiful photographs to inspire you, Painting Stones will soon have you on your way to creating your own rock art collection. You can even share the fun by creating a quirky treasure trail around your neighbourhood for passers-by to discover!Trade ReviewThe beauty of the front cover indicates the quality of the contents, every page filled with incredible photographs, all Marion's work. For novices, through to real artists, the book is a true inspiration, vibrant, exciting, a step-by-step guide to achieving true pieces of art. The excitement of my granddaughters on seeing the book and the equipment I had bought, all listed clearly in the book, was a joy to see but it was at least an hour before we could get started. They were so entranced with the photographs they had to see each page first of all and then their personal thoughts of Marion had to be read and discussed. This is so much more than a guide, it is a thing of beauty in itself. The three of us decided to start with the first design, the Ladybird which we sketched the basic design but then added our own decoration which the girls loved doing and achieved an excellent result. The instructions are so easy to follow, very clear, and in simple language for all to follow. I honestly cannot praise this book enough and am certain it is going to be referred to many, many times in our craft sessions. Painting stones has never been such fun. All three of us, 6-year-old, 9-year-old, and 73-year-old all gave it 10/10 and at £9.99 is one of the best value books I have owned. -- Jean Vaughan * Customer Review *In four decades of writing about art books, this is only the second one I have seen that is about the well-established practice of painting stones. I may have missed a few smaller ones, but it's not something that's troubled the mainstream. Where the previous one (also published by Search Press) concentrated on animals, this takes a general approach that offers the opportunity to suit subject matter to shape. While Michelangelo's remark about finding out what's in the block might be taking it a bit too far, the principle is not dissimilar. The book is project-based, something bedevilled by the now de rigeur funky typeface used for the headings. The materials list is clear and concise and the stage instructions are very much to the point. The illustrations are sharp and well-sized, which is to be welcomed, and you should have little trouble producing results like the examples Marion provides. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Getting started doesn't need expensive materials or complicated techniques. • Gauguin and Polynesia

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Gauguin and Polynesia

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisPaul Gauguin is commonly regarded as one of the greatest modern artists. He is renowned for resplendent, mythic imagery from Oceania, for a life of restless travel and for his supposed immersion in Polynesian life. But he has long been regarded ambivalently, and in recent years both Gauguin's sexual behaviour, and his paintings, have been considered exploitative. Gauguin and Polynesia offers a fresh view on the artist, not from the perspective of European art history, but from the contemporary vantage point of the region – Oceania – which he so famously moved to. Gauguin's art is revealed, for the first time, to be richer and more eclectic than has been recognised. The artist indeed did invent enigmatic and symbolic images, but he also depicted Polynesia's colonial modernity, acknowledging the life of the time and the dignity and power of some of the Islanders he encountered. Gauguin and Polynesia neither celebrates nor condemns an extraordinary painter, who at times denounced and at other times affirmed the French empire that shaped his own life and the places he moved between. It is a revelation, of a formative artist of modern life, and of multicultural worlds in the making.Trade ReviewImagine a book about Gauguin written by someone who truly knows, first hand, the Pacific islands, their history, their cultures. Imagine an author capable of looking at Gauguin’s paintings not as illustrations of ‘primitivism’ or ‘colonialism’ but as attempts – failures, successes, improbabilities – to come to terms with another way of life. This is the book. There is no other like it. * T. J. Clark, art historian and author of The Painting of Modern Life *Refreshingly original, Gauguin and Polynesia is an impressive and deeply engaging dive into aspects of Gauguin’s oeuvre that have largely evaded discussion and analysis. Guiding the reader through a crisscrossing series of historical trajectories and personal encounters, the author leans confidently into the puzzling contradictions and ambiguities that have intrigued Gauguin’s admirers and detractors alike, deploying paintings, people and places as sites of connection. A crucial addition to the literature, this remarkable volume draws on the unique vantage point of Indigenous histories and the powerful spiritual agency of the Islands to reveal a penetrating glimpse of life in Polynesia as it might have been for Paul Gauguin. Pointing to saliences and possible confluences, Thomas offers readers a compelling and imaginative analysis of Gauguin – one that illuminates and heightens our understandings yet leaves things open, fugitive and deliciously unresolved (just as the artist himself would have it). * Maia Nuku, Metropolitan Museum of Art *This brilliantly argued book by a distinguished anthropologist and historian of Oceania offers new perspectives on a figure until now understood through a Western-centred history of art. Drawing on ethnographic and historical sources, local knowledges and the experiences of Pacific artists, he reopens our response to many familiar paintings, complicating the ideas of primitivism, cultural appropriation, and sexual exploitation that currently frame discussions of Gauguin. By showing both Europe and Oceania in transformation, their histories dialectically linked, Thomas crafts a complex realism – a model for studies of travelling art and artists in an uneven modernity. * James Clifford, author of The Predicament of Culture *PRAISE FOR VOYAGERS 'Takes readers on a narrative odyssey' Wall Street Journal, Books of the Year 'Highlights a dizzying burst of new research' The Economist 'A refreshing addition to the canon of literature that contemplates Oceanic navigation' Noelle Kahanu 'I would not be surprised if, after reading this masterpiece, many readers are compelled to take up voyaging themselves' Science Magazine ‘An elucidating, accessible, and well-illustrated guide to the long history of Oceanic settlement and connections' * Minerva Magazine *

  • Collinson & Lock: Art Furnishers, Interior

Troubador Publishing Collinson & Lock: Art Furnishers, Interior

Book SynopsisVictorian furnishers and decorators Collinson & Lock were a model of the art furniture business of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm’s customers and competitors. Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London ‘art furniture’ trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm’s business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock’s creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period. Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

Book SynopsisRising out of the depths of the North Atlantic, the great cathedral-like sea stacks of Stac Lee and Stac an Armin and the jagged outlines of the islands of Hirta, Dùn, Levenish, Borerary and Soay make up one of the most famous groups of islands in the world, the archipelago of St Kilda. The names we have given to the islands reflect our own impressions of a place which in the minds of many lie far off in the west, 100 miles distant from mainland Scotland, surrounded by the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic. From Britain's Loneliest Islands' to the Islands at the Edge of the World', the archipelago is often considered to be an outlier both physically and culturally from the British Isles, a place where a separate, supposedly more basic existence took place in an environment whose stark natural beauty is matched by its harsh and unforgiving location.
