Book SynopsisBy bridging the gap between conventional medical interventions and complementary approaches using aromatherapy, palliative care nurse and clinical aromatherapist, Carol Rose, demonstrates how an integrated and evidence-based approach can have the most significant impact on quality-of-life in patients with life-limiting illness.Aromatherapy is already a fundamental practice in many palliative care settings but its benefits remain under-researched and under-represented. Each chapter of this book incorporates a person-centred focus to consider the integration of various aromatherapy approaches for a range of end-of-life symptoms, alongside conventional medical options. The specificity of this approach and the emphasis of empowering patients to be involved in the process of choosing oils and applications, allows for improved results in the palliation of common symptoms.Integrating Clinical Aromatherapy in Palliative Care has a foundation in research from the patient's point of view. Book SynopsisAromatherapy has seen a huge surge in popularity in the past decade, and has proven effective for a wide array of women's health problems. However, the number of women interested in introducing aromatherapy to their personal health care dwarfs the number of clinicians formally trained in it. As a result, large numbers of women self-treat with aromatherapy, which can increase risk factors particularly during pregnancy and lactation. It will provide the nurse and nurse-midwife with valuable information to be able to advise women about the safety of aromatherapy in maternity care. I had the pleasure of working with Pam in the UK whilst she was completing a Masters' degree in Complementary Therapies at the University of Westminster, and I know that her focus is on safe and appropriate application of aromatherapy for pregnant and birthing women, supported by research evidence. -- Denise Tiran, FRCM, MSc, RM, PGCEA, Education Director at ExpectancyPam Conrad gracefully combines both the art and science of aromatherapy. She has a profound knowledge about the clinical use of essential oils but also the artful use of aromatherapy in daily life.As essential oils are so easily accessible as home remedies, it is very tempting to believe that there are no risks in using them. One main thing that I love and respect about Pam's teachings is that she puts safety first, especially for vulnerable patients like pregnant women, infants and young children. As parents and patients use essential oils for conditions ranging from benign viral illnesses to advanced malignancies, it is paramount for any medical health practitioner to have at least basic knowledge of the benefits and safety of essential oils. I highly recommend Pam's book to all my colleagues and patients. -- Dr Alina Olteanu, MD, PhD, FAAP, ABIHM, Whole Child TexasThis book represents years of nursing and midwifery practice, research and education in Women's Health aromatherapy. I use this valuable information on a daily basis. -- Stephanie VanderHorst CNM, RN, Past President of Indiana Association of Nurse MidwivesPam's course on aromatherapy for women's health has been so beneficial for me in my practice as a nurse. The education I received has allowed me to practice safe aromatherapy for my pregnant and laboring mommas! Practicing clinically evidenced based aromatherapy is a must in the hospital setting. By having a book to help guide this practice that can be referenced while at the bedside would be an invaluable asset to the aromatherapy world as it begins to be used more and more in hospitals alongside traditional medicine. -- Katlyn Devereux RN, BSN, CMSRN, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, KentuckyPam Conrad is a Purdue trained nurse and valued NAHA Certified Clinical Aromatherapist®. It is wonderful to see NAHA members like Pam who are active in authoring books, participating in studies, and teaching. I very much look forward to the publication of Pam's new book "Women's Health Aromatherapy". -- Annette Davis ND, Certified Clinical Aromatherapist & Nutritionist, President National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy NAHAAlthough there is an abundance of essential oil information flooding the market, very little is clinically evidenced based and safe for perinatal use. In fact much of the information is harmful. Pam Conrad's expertise and experience is what is needed for an OB/GYN aromatherapy guidebook for practicing professionals. -- Kathy Ryan RN CCAP, Perinatal Support Services St Vincents Women’s Hospital, Indianapolis, INWith the growing popularity of integrative medicine, essential oils have found their way back into health care. Book SynopsisFor thousands of years fragrance has been used, across many varied cultures, for altering mental and emotional states, and as part of spiritual practice. This book explores the impact of fragrance on the psyche from biological, anthropological, perfumery and aromatherapy viewpoints. Beginning with an exploration of our olfactory system and a discussion of the language of odour, the author examines the ways in which fragrance can influence our perceptions and experiences. She introduces us to a broad range of fragrance types - woody, resinous, spicy, herbaceous, agrestic, floral and citrus, as well as the attars that form part of Unani Tibb medicine. Traditional and contemporary uses and the mood-enhancing properties of fragrance types are presented. The book then provides an overview of the theoretical and philosophical frameworks that have been used to analyse how and why we choose fragrance. Finally readers are given guidance on how to cultivate their olfactory palate, which reveals a new dimension in the use of fragrance to enhance wellbeing. This book offers a wealth of knowledge on plant aromatics and the powerful influence of fragrance on wellbeing. It will be of particular interest to aromatherapists, perfumers, psychotherapists, ethnobotanists and anthropologists.Trade ReviewThis book explores the impact of fragrance on the psyche from biological, anthropological, perfumery and aromatherapy viewpoints... Readers are given guidance on how to cultivate their olfactory plate, which reveals a new dimension in the use of fragrance to enhance wellbeing. This book offers a wealth of knowledge on plant aromatics and the powerful influence of fragrance on wellbeing. It will be of particular interest to aromatherapists, perfumers, psychotherapists, ethnobotanists and anthropologists. -- Embody MagazineThis book takes in a fantastic range of topics, including the biology of fragrance, the social life of scents, the healing powers of smell and incense rituals from around the world. Its central chapters profile the uses of an impressive list of aromatics (blending myth, folklore and science) and it concludes with some vital suggestions for cultivating our olfactory palate. Written by a true perfume lover, Fragrance and Wellbeing makes for heady reading. -- David Howes, Professor of Anthropology, Concordia University, Montreal and co-author of Aroma: The Cultural History of Smell (1994) and Ways of Sensing: Understanding the Senses in Society (2013)Jennifer Peace Rhind transports the reader on a fascinating journey while exploring the influence of scent on the development of civilization. This well-referenced book includes research within the last century regarding the use of fragrance throughout history. Fragrance and Wellbeing investigates our evolving relationship with the language of scent and its impact on the personal, cultural, spiritual and therapeutic domains with an acknowledgement to new observations for the possible effects of fragrance. A thoroughly interesting, informative and engaging read! -- Lora Cantele, Editor, International Journal of Professional Holistic AromatherapyA walk through an oriental bazaar, contemplation in a Hindu temple, and reading Rhind's Fragrance and Wellbeing are three experiences that provide a clear insight into what Westerners miss by pushing our sense of smell aside. By presenting ample cross-cultural, historical and psychological evidence, Rhind persuasively argues why we should take our nose seriously. -- Dr Jan Havlícek, Department of Anthropology, Charles University, Prague, Czech RepublicJennifer Peace Rhind's classic delivers an in depth explanation of the effect natural plant perfumes have on the human psyche. This work not only covers a scientific summary of plant chemistry, but also the historical use of plants in shamanic and mystical traditions throughout the world...In this great work, the author explores the various odour types and characteristics encountered in plant fragrances in great detail, and goes on to list and describe plant categories... Having read (or at least scanned) many books on the subject of "Aromatherapy", I have found Jennifer Peace Rhind's "Fragrance and Wellbeing" - to be the one which will remain on my bookshelf, to be referred to and delved into often. A great work which deserves much revisiting. -- The HerbalistJennifer Peace Rhind is a trained chartered biologist who then undertook further studies in complementary therapies, including aromatherapy... She explores the sense of smell and how it works with the psyche... the emotional response to odors.... The evolution of perfume is explored..introduces us to the language of fragrance... Book SynopsisCardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with hypertension standing out as one of the most relevant risk factors. As such, in this compilation, an update on the hypotensive and vasorelaxant effects of essential oils and isolated compounds is presented. The authors determine the chemical constituents and evaluate the anti-pain properties of essential oils from Thuja plicata var. The chemical composition, antimicrobial activity and mosquito larvicidal action of essential oils from the leaves, pseudo-stem, rhizome and fruits of Alpinia malaccensis grown in Vietnam is also discussed. Essential oils are explored in the context of their ethnobotanical survey in the treatment of one or more gastrointestinal troubles. The medicinal benefits of lemon, lavender and peppermint essential oils are described. Further research should be performed to discover more uses for these oils so that we can gain the most benefit from use. Later, the medicinal uses of essential oils from ancient times to the present are highlighted, particularly their mosquito repellent activities, toxicity and side effects. The in vitro and in vivo pharmacological activities of Jasminum grandiflorum are assessed, and current insights are provided with regards to clinical efficacy and safety. A critical overview is provided focusing on the diverse roles of the most abundant compounds in essential oil samples as determinants of the influence of impact notes and biological activities, calling for genuine and reproducible characterisation of such dominant compounds. In the penultimate chapter, an integrated summary of the authors' experimental findings from an analysis of the community of fluorescent Pseudomonas strains in the rhizosphere of commercially grown Mentha piperita is presented.
