Book SynopsisFounded in 1916 by William E. Boeing, a wealthy timber merchant, the mighty Boeing Company’s long history spans decades of rich achievement and technological development. Beginning with the manufacture of seaplanes, fighters and, from the 1930s onwards, huge bombers, Boeing pioneered innovative transports – gigantic airliners, missiles, rockets and, most recently, vehicles for space exploration and satellites.Constantly evolving, Boeing set out to develop an entirely new jet transport, and in 1954 the innovative 707 appeared. The 727 and 737 airliners quickly followed and in 1969 the revolutionary 747. By 1975 the ‘Jumbo Jet’ was being produced in seven different models and new versions continue to be developed to this day.Boeing in Photographs is a glorious photographic history, detailing the story of the company from its humble side-project beginnings to its ascent into being one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers.

  • Miles M.52: Gateway to Supersonic Flight

The History Press Ltd Miles M.52: Gateway to Supersonic Flight

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn December 1943, a top secret contract (E.24/43) was awarded to Miles Aircraft. The contract was to build the world's first supersonic jet capable of 1000mph. The only reliable source of data on supersonic objects came from the Armament Research Dept and their wind tunnel tests on ammunition. From this, Miles developed an exceptionally thin-winged, bullet-shaped aircraft. the research was inexplicably passed to the Americans in 1944. By December 1945, one prototype was virtually complete. The second, destined for an attempt at the sound barrier was 80 per cent complete. In February 1946, Capt Eric Brown was confirmed as the test pilot and October 1946 was set for the supersonic trials. However, on 12 February 1946, Miles were ordered to stop production. No plausible explanation was given for the cancellation when Britain was within six months of breaking the sound barrier. Eric Brown and others directly involved including Dennis Bancroft, the Chief Aerodynamicist on the M.52, have now come together to try and finally solve the mystery behind the cancellation.

The History Press Ltd Tales of Lancasters and Other Aircraft: Dangerous

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOf every 100 operational airmen in the Second World War, nearly seven were killed flying in England and more than three severely injured in crashes. With a total of 12,398, the number of non-operational casualties was significant. Operational casualties were of course chillingly grim – over 56,000 airmen died in the war.George Culling was a 19-year-old Lancaster navigator whose own experiences often involved battling tricky and dangerous conditions. Fascinated by the ever-present dangers for airmen even well away from combat, he has collated tales from comrades and combined them with his own to preserve some of the unexpected, inconvenient, dangerous, and often downright bizarre experiences that frequently typified daily life for airmen in the Second World War.

Examined in this volume are the aircraft, events and personalities that have shaped it over the decades.Elstree is one of only a dozen or so civil aerodromes in the UK which have been in continuous operation for at least the last ninety years. Book SynopsisThe Douglas DC-3 is as iconic an aircraft design as the Mustang or the Spitfire. It has endured more than any other, with a few hundred examples still in use across the world: from Africa, to Antarctica, to the USA. Many of the DC-3''s current operators use turbine conversions of the type, with the main proponents from South Africa and Wisconsin, USA. Many fledgling US airlines blossomed due to their DC-3s, and almost every major post-war airline started running their schedules with this type; they took advantage of the surplus in military DC-3s (C-47s) after the Second World War, which had already helped to make history in operations such as the huge support for the D-Day Normandy Landings. In Douglas DC-3: 80 Glorious Years, Geoff Jones explores the rich history of the DC-3 from its beginnings in Southern California to its use across the world. Even today, numerous enthusiast organizations continue to keep DC-3s airworthy and fly them for their members. The days of DC-3 commercial operations are now nearing an end, due to the unavailability of spare parts and the scarcity of expensive avgas fuel in remote parts of the world. And yet, the legacy of the DC-3 has endured; the Airbus and Boeing operators of today have the DC-3 operations of the previous century to thank for their current success.

  • High Flight: The Life and Poetry of Pilot Officer

Fighting High Ltd High Flight: The Life and Poetry of Pilot Officer

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhen Second World War Spitfire pilot John Gillespie Magee penned his poem `High Flight', little did he know that his words would inspire legions of aspiring aviators who had a similar wish to fly their `eager craft through footless halls of air'. Founded on years of detailed research, Roger Cole's book High Flight tells John Magee's extraordinary story, describing hitherto-unknown details of his short life, and providing insight into the inspiration for the poems that have found a unique place in history. Born of an English mother and American father in Nanking in China, Magee grew up and was educated in different parts of the world, proving to be a highly accomplished student. Through his experiences, he developed principles that made him determined to defend the rights of those he loved and respected. Exhilarated by flight and finding unique language in poetry, John was able to use words to express the emotions and sentiments of all who fly in a manner that is acknowledged and applauded throughout the world. The outbreak of war in Europe violated his beliefs, and, determined to fight for freedom, John left America and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, qualifying as a pilot and travelling to England to fight Nazism. Tragically, John would lose his life, aged 19 years, in an accident, so never know how his words would serve posterity. Roger Cole's High Flight traces the path of John Magee's achievement, revealing an incredible story of human endeavor, vision, determination and self-sacrifice.Trade Review'An excellent biography of this extraordinary young man.' (Yorkshire Gazette and Herald, January 2014) '... the author has eloquently traced his life, achievements, human endeavour, vision, determination and self-sacrifice. Photographic plate sections add to the text, rounding the picture. This is a military history that will appeal to all those interested in understanding the military past, but it is also a very personal history and a look into the creativity of Pilot Office Magee that should appeal to a very much wider readership.' (Firetrench, January 2014) 'Excellent book ... beautifully written.' (War History Online March 2014)

The History Press Ltd Ascend or Die: Richard Crosbie, Pioneer of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisRichard Crosbie (1756-1824) is rightly celebrated as Ireland’s first aeronaut. Inspired by balloon experiments in France, he constructed a hydrogen balloon with the aim of flying across the Irish Sea. A crowd of 20,000 people witnessed his first flight from Ranelagh Gardens, Dublin in January 1785. He organised two further flights in Dublin, from Royal Barracks and from Leinster Lawn, and made a final flight from Limerick in 1786. Crosbie’s adventures enthralled the public and won him the support of many influential figures, but he never achieved his goal of crossing the Irish Sea. That honour finally fell to Windham Sadler in 1817 in a flight from Portobello Barracks. This book tells the dramatic story of the intrepid scientist and showman, Richard Crosbie, and places his extraordinary achievements in the context of European ballooning. It reveals new information about Crosbie’s subsequent career as an actor in New York, where he also organised a balloon spectacle for public entertainment in 1800. It includes a poignant account of Crosbie’s final years when he was living in poverty in Baltimore, Maryland.

Book SynopsisAfter the fall of France in 1940, Germany attempted to strangle Britain into submission by attacking the Atlantic Convoys, which brought much need supplies and war material from the USA and Canada. While the U-boats attacked from beneath the seas, the Germans modified a civilian airliner to create the Fw-200 Condor to attack from the skies. By the summer of 1941, the Condor attacks had succeeded to the extent that Winston Churchill called them 'the scourge of the Atlantic'. This book discusses the development of the Condor, and analyzes the various Allied responses, including the development of the Hurricat, a modified hurricane that could be launched via catapult from modified merchant ships.Table of ContentsIntroduction/ Design & development/ Technical Specifications / Combatants/ Combat/ Statistics & Analysis/ Conclusion/ Further Reading

  • Berkshire Airfields in the Second World War

Countryside Books Berkshire Airfields in the Second World War

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBerkshire began the Second World War in 1939 with virtually no military airfields. However, this quickly changed and a massive building programme was soon underway, initially intended to provide training facilities for bomber crews. As the newly built airfields became operational, some were taken over by the USAAF including Greenham Common, Membury and Welford and they were involved in the planning and eventual execution of operation Overlord, the Allied D-Day assault upon Fortress Europe. White Waltham near Maidenhead will always be remembered as the headquarters of the legendary Air Transport Auxiliary, whose male and then increasingly female pilots - including Amy Johnson - ferried every type of aircraft from the factories to the front line airfields. Not only did the ATA prove that girls had excellent flying skills, but also that they were capable of piloting solo the largest bombers. This book describes the history of each airfield, highlights some of the major operations carried out from them, and marks their overall contribution to the great war effort. The effects of the war on the daily lives of the people living in Berkshire are also described. Reading and Newbury in particular realised the constant dangers they faced from random daylight attacks by German planes. Robin Brook's action-packed account will bring back vivid memories for many. It is a sharp reminder of the time when the skies never ceased to throb with the drone of departing and returning aircraft.
