Key Publishing Ltd 125: The Jet Dragon that Roared

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe 125, with its various prefixes, was first conceived in the 1960s. Initially the response was lukewarm, but as the benefits of individual jet travel began to become apparent, particularly in North America, the orders began to arrive. This mid-cabin size business jet had a huge appeal to the corporate business market, and its list of operators read like something out of the Forbes 500. It was also sold widely to the military market and was the first western aircraft ever to achieve full certification in the former Soviet Union. This fully illustrated book looks at the development and history of this hugely popular jet.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEstablished in 1979 as Jersey European Airways from the merger of Intra Airways and Express Air Services, by the start of the 21st century, Flybe had grown to become the largest regional airline in Europe. From small beginnings, it operated passenger and cargo flights between the Channel Islands and mainland UK using various turboprop aircraft. Acquired by the Walker Group in 1983, route expansion and the introduction of larger aircraft into the fleet followed. Jersey European's first jet aircraft, the BAe 146, arrived in 1993 in response to increasing passenger numbers, and network development into Europe, including a franchise partnership with Air France. Renamed British European in 2000 to better reflect the airline's business, a further change followed in 2002 when the airline rebranded itself as a low-fare carrier and changed its name to Flybe. Flybe was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2010, but during the subsequent ten years, encountered a series of financial problems and faced substantial losses. It was taken over by the Connect Airways Consortium in 2019 but financial difficulties ensued. The company went into administration in March 2020\. Flybe returned to the skies in 2022 as an entirely new company. With more than 140 images, this book charts the rise and fall of Flybe and the relaunch of Flybe 2.0.

  • BAC One-Eleven

    Key Publishing Ltd BAC One-Eleven

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAt the time of the One-Eleven's first flight, BAC seemed to have stolen a march on its American rivals. It was comfortably ahead of the similarly configured DC-9, and the Boeing 737 was barely a gleam in Boeing's eye at the time. So why was it that Douglas went on to sell over 1,000 DC-9s (to say nothing of the developed MD-80 and Boeing 717) while BAC shifted only 244 One-Elevens? The answer to that question is just one part of the fascinating tale of the One-Eleven. Also told in these pages is the full story of its concept and design against the troubled background of the industry's consolidation and of its entry into service. So sturdy was the One-Eleven's construction that its service life continued into the 21st century. At least two examples remain airworthy and leading active lives. The One-Eleven was undoubtedly a great British achievement, yet anybody studying the aircraft's history is left with the feeling that it represents an opportunity lost; this book explores why.

  • Junkers 1895 1969

Key Publishing Ltd Junkers 1895 1969

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisProfessor Hugo Junkers can be described as one of the greatest aviation pioneers and a maverick to boot. His approach to how an aircraft should be built was like no other and, rather than modifying, re-designing or copying ideas from other pioneers, Junkers took his own unique route and doggedly stuck to it for the two decades. Proceeding in the face of the theory that aircraft should be built from wood and fabric, all Junkers aircraft were made of metal, a material that was regarded as being too heavy. The Junkers aircraft story can be told in three parts: the first was under the control of Hugo Junkers, the second by the Nazis until the end of World War Two, and the final post-war period, which saw the company exist as a remnant of its former self. The first part of the story is clearly dominated by Junkers' efforts in commercial aircraft production, while the Nazis focused on military machines to help rapidly re-build a new Luftwaffe. Only the iconic Ju 52/3m and the Ju 90 straddle these two periods of the company's history. A pacifist, Junkers, who died in 1935, must have been turning in his grave when the skies were filled with aircraft in his name, waging war a few years later across Europe. This new book edition of Aeroplane's Junkers Company Profile 1895-1969 showcases the aircraft of this manufacturer from the start of operations until the end.

  • Vickers 1911-77

    Key Publishing Ltd Vickers 1911-77

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIt seems incredible that a mere 33 years separates the maiden flights of the Barnes Wallis-designed R.100 airship from the beautiful VC10 airliner. It is also remarkable that, in 2013, the latter is still in service, albeit in dwindling numbers, but still representing a company that was formed 102 years ago! Although the VC10 was prefixed with BAC by the time of its entry into service, the aircraft represents the rapid rise of Vickers, which actually embarked on its first aeronautical project in 1908, before establishing an official aviation department in 1911. Vickers produced over 70 different types of aircraft during a 49-year period, not including a host of sub-variants, the Wellington, for example, having 19 alone. Not all were successful, but every one contributed, however small, another nugget of experience, which was either ploughed into the next aircraft or stored away for the future. An ability to think outside the box', was another of Vickers' fortes. A good example of this was not only employing Barnes Wallis, but having such faith in his ideas, which must have seemed quite radical at the time, especially his perseverance and ultimate success with geodetic construction. Wallis had no shortage of critics and many dyed in the wool' employees of Vickers, during the early days, left the company because of his ideas. However, history has shown us that he was right about geodetics, and like Hawker with its Hurricane and Supermarine with its Spitfire, only God knows what the RAF would have done without the Wellington at the beginning of the Second World War. This book gives readers an insight into the aircraft produced by Vickers, as well as a history of the aircraft company itself.

Book SynopsisIt may be hard to imagine in 2012, but Great Britain was once filled with a plethora of aircraft manufacturers. One hundred years ago, the seeds of many of them were being sown, as the demand for aircraft gained pace following the outbreak of the First World War. Not all survived following the armistice and the subject of this book, Supermarine, only kept going by the skin of its teeth and certainly did not settle into a profitable aircraft manufacturing business until the mid to late 1920s. However, with the genius mind of Reginald Joseph Mitchell on board, the company could do no wrong and without doubt, the company's most famous and well-known product was the Spitfire. The colossal orders received for the fighter set the company on a steady post-war course which, once again, was a period that saw other companies fall by the wayside. Following Mitchell's demise, we must not forget the man who carried the baton, Joe Smith, who developed the Spitfire and Seafire into a machine that remained in production for ten years, ultimately ending its service career in Korea. Smith did not just ride on that back of Mitchell's designs and was responsible for the Spiteful, Seafang and the Attacker to name but a few. This book gives readers an insight into the aircraft produced by Supermarine, and those that did not quite make it, as well as a history of the aircraft company itself.

Book SynopsisCurtiss, as a company, contributed a great deal in establishing the US aircraft industry firmly on the world stage, but behind every great company is usually one forward thinking man, and in this case, it was Glenn Hammond Curtiss. By the end of World War One, the company had built over 10,000 aircraft. Glenn Curtiss would remain a director until his premature death in 1930\. In 1929, the company merged to become Curtiss-Wright. The lack of research and development invested in the company leading up to the jet age also saw the premature demise of Curtiss-Wright itself. The aircraft Curtiss-Wright created leading up to World War Two were not the best, but the company's business-like approach to aircraft manufacturing meant that it could produce large numbers for a variety of customers, foreign included, at a reasonable price. However, in 1947, its one attempt at breaking into the area of jet aircraft had failed and the aviation side of Curtiss-Wright was sold to North American Aviation. This new book edition of Aeroplane's Curtiss Company Profile 1907-1947 showcases the aircraft of this manufacturer from the start of operations until the end.

  • Concorde

    Key Publishing Ltd Concorde

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe desire for airliners that could fly faster and higher than all that had gone before them was ingrained into the commercial aviation world from the end of the Second World War. The STAC (Supersonic Transport Advisory Committee) was formed in October 1956 and would be in charge of development of and responsible for the many manufacturers that would be needed to build an aircraft named Concorde. Bearing in mind the complexity of the aircraft, Concorde was one of the world's safest considering the distances it travelled and the eye-watering speed at which it flew. This made the loss of the Air France Concorde in 2000 a particularly unfitting beginning of the end' for the airliner which courted controversy right to the final . It was a combination of factors that saw the airliner enter retirement three years later but the bottom line is that Concorde was getting old and, despite being built like the proverbial brick out-house', constant supersonic cycles take their toll, and that kind of punishment would not be expected of a military aircraft, let alone a civilian one. The Concorde was an incredible achievement from the outset, built by two different nations that overcame every technical problem that arose (which were innumerable) to produce, by far, the most iconic airliner ever built. This book explores the failures, triumphs and history of this aircraft, from its beginning to its end.

Book SynopsisWhile not the first aircraft manufacturer in Britain, Bristol had the distinct advantage of being created by a well-established businessman, rather than an enthusiastic aviator, by the name of Sir George White. Bristol grew rapidly, from a few hangars at the influential Larkhill in Wiltshire to a new site at Filton, and, up to 2012, was one of the key aviation design, development and manufacturing locations in Britain. Thanks to the many talented designers, engineers, test pilots, not to mention the vision of Sir George over a century ago, Bristol has made its mark on the aviation industry with revolutionary aircraft, and a number of firsts and records along the way. Both military and civilian aircraft and the engines, piston, turboprop and jet have benefited from the standard in engineering excellence that was set on the hallowed turf of Filton. This book explores the history of the company, and the aircraft that it produced.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisExcluding military variants, sales of the Boeing 707's family of large jet airliners are about double those of their nearest rival, the Douglas DC-8; yet, with nearly four hundred of all Douglas DC-8 variants ordered, the DC-8 design is far from being overshadowed from Boeing at Renton. The Douglas DC-8, which began life in the 1950s as the Douglas Model 1881, became available to the airliners about a year later than the first Boeing 707's, but from the outset Douglas regarded this time lag as an advantage rather than otherwise. In particular, it determined that safety and performance standards should be maintained without loss of flying qualities, and, unlike Boeing, was able to persue its design unhampered by consideration of military requirements. A total of 556 Douglas DC-8s were built. Some DC-8s are still in service, their airframe life is excellent, and some are re-engining with the CFM56 turbofan, giving efficient propulsion and much higher flight performance; the re-engined aircraft will be styled as 70 series. This book, which features images that have never been published before, explores the history of the DC-8 and those who made it the success it still is today.

    Key Publishing Ltd Sunderland

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe arrival of the Short Sunderland into RAF service in 1938 raised the bar considerably with regard to flying-boat design, compared with what airmen had previously experienced. Gone were the draughty, cluttered cockpits, cramped fuselages and mediocre performance associated with the average inter-war flying boat. The Sunderland brought a host of improvements, which remained only marginally altered for the aircraft’s 21 years of RAF service. The Sunderland was by far the best flying-boat the RAF had ever received, and, sadly, it was also the last. This new book edition of Aeroplane’s deep dive into the history of the Sunderland looks at how this aircraft served our country through the Second World War and beyond, both in civil and military roles, and helps to keep the memory of this wonderful aircraft alive.

Book SynopsisCubana has had to adapt to a number of different scenarios, from its early days as a flying club, through the heady days of the 1940s and 1960s, when its nation became America’s party island and the country was taken over by Fidel Castro, which turned the politics of the country on its head. Suddenly, Cuba’s best friend, the Soviet Union was 6,000 miles away and all connections to its nearest neighbour, the USA, were cut, and the country was, in effect, closed off from the rest of the world. In the 1980s, the country once again began to open to tourism, and in more recent years, relations with the US, but, through all this, Cubana has sought to keep the island connected to the rest of the world, with equipment sourced from both the Soviet Union and Europe. This book will tell the story from the beginning until the present day.

Key Publishing Ltd Lockheed L-188 Electra

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn January 1955, an industry-wide call from American Airlines for a new aircraft resulted in Lockheed's newest creation - the L-188 Electra. American ordered 35 straight from the drawing board, and this was quickly followed by Eastern Air Lines' order for 40 aircraft. Despite being a turboprop in an increasingly jet world, the Electra continued to be used by US airlines across the country, and the US military also used a prototype as the basis for the P-3 Orion anti-submarine aircraft. While the Electra found success in both North and South America, the sales to Europe were much more limited, with only KLM placing an order for the aircraft. The final iteration was the L-188C, which boasted increased fuel capacity and seating for up to 99 passengers. Owing to some serious accidents and speed restrictions in the late 1950s and early 1960s, newer Electras underwent strengthening of their nacelle and wing structure. There were 170 Electras built in total, and, incredibly, a few are still in service today. With over 180 images, this book details the L-188 Electra across the globe, showing the different variants and liveries throughout the years.

Book SynopsisThe C-135 series, along with its civilian counterpart, the Boeing 707, emerged on to the drawing boards of technical design teams at the end of the 1940s. Twenty years later, the first C-135 was delivered to the Military Air Transport Service in 1961, five years after the first KC-135 Stratotanker made its first flight for the United States Air Force. Since then, C-135 series aircraft have performed a wide variety of military and civilian tasks. To enable them to be carried out effectively, the majority of aircraft, including the electronic, observation, reconnaissance, and weather-monitoring variants, had extensive modifications carried out both internally and externally. Some were extreme, yet no prefix was assigned, whereas others had the designation amended accordingly. Illustrated with over 150 images, and following on from Seattle Stratotanker Veterans: Boeing KC-135 Variants, this book explores the highly specialist roles that these aircraft and their crews have undertaken in more than 60 years of service.

Book SynopsisCovering the period from the establishment of the Royal Flying Corps in 1912 to the end of World War One, this book explores the development of the major stalwart of military aviation: biplanes. Throughout this period, the birth of the British aviation industry took place with names such as de Havilland, Bristol, Handley-Page and many others emerging and eventually becoming synonymous with British aviation. World War One spurred innovation and development with the need to maintain or restore competitive advantage in air warfare. During this period, in addition to those aircraft that became household names, many prototype and experimental aircraft were constructed for military purposes, but did not enter service, either at all or in meaningful numbers. Nevertheless, the science of aviation was advanced. This book is a unique reference source for aviation historians and enthusiasts.

Book SynopsisThe story of aviation is, above all, the story of success. Few, if any, industries could have equalled the astounding pace of the development of flight. For many, however, it was also the story of failure – of wasted ideas, wasted designs and wasted money. There is also a third category of aviation. A sort of success-failure story. These were the aircraft that never completely made the grade – and their histories and development are as fascinating as any. This book explores ten of these ‘middle of the road’ aircraft. Some were just poor aircraft; some came at the wrong time; some were misused; and some found themselves in the most awful of predicaments – they became the target of political bias. But they were all characters. They all had a working life, however limited, and they all had their vices and virtues. Including first-hand accounts from designers, test pilots, operators and aircrew, this book presents detailed research into the truth behind the image. The aircraft included are the B.E.2c, R.E.8, General Aircraft Monospar, Armstrong Whitworth Argosy, Fairey Battle, Blackburn Roc, Westland Whirlwind, Saro Lerwick, Avro Manchester, and Vickers Supermarine Swift.

Book SynopsisFirst flown in 1948 and in service from 1953, the Viscount was manufactured to help transform the commercial travel market. In total, more than 400 were built and sold across every continent. Beloved by pilots, the groundcrew who maintained the aircraft, and by passengers, the Vickers Viscount proved to be transformative, providing air travel with pressurised cabin space, meaning a quiet journey for travellers with less noise vibration and windows that offered sweeping views. Many were sold to commercial airlines, while others were owned by private companies and individuals. Some changed hands quickly, while others stayed with their owners for years. Many Viscounts still exist, often now in museums and occasionally remodelled into quirky venues for lunch or weddings. With such a number of aircraft constructed and a long service life, inevitably there were accidents and incidents and the details of many are recounted here. This book also covers the service lives of the Viscounts, including construction and serial numbers and the routes served. With more than 140 historic black and white and colour photographs, this volume offers a comprehensive guide to one of the most popular passenger aircraft.

Book SynopsisTAC was the largest of the USAF’s major Cold War combatant commands. Formed in 1946 and headquartered at Langley AFB, Virginia, it operated a huge range of aircraft over the following 46 years until it was inactivated in 1992. In 1946, it was equipped with mainly World War Two aircraft types including P-47s and P-51s. It soon ushered into service jet aircraft operations with the P-80 and F-86. Within a few years, TAC was operating a wide range of tactical fighters, ground attack fighters, light bombers, tactical missiles, photographic reconnaissance and special mission aircraft (reconnaissance, special operations, and electronic warfare). TAC played a significant part in the Korean War, the Cuban missile crisis and later the wars in SE Asia and the Gulf in 1991. It came to operate a large number of tactical fighter and attack aircraft including the F-84, F-100 and F-105. As the 1960s progressed, they were joined by the A-7, F-111 and F-4 and, in the 1980s, supplemented by A-10s, F-15s and F-16s through to the end of the Cold War. In the run-up to any war with the USSR, Tactical Air Command was expected to deploy its combat airpower to USAF Commands in Europe and/or the Pacific. That deployment capability struggled during the 1970s. However, from 1978 to 1984, the strength and capability of TAC was transformed by its new commander, General Wilbur ‘Bill’ Creech. He organised, equipped and prepared his units (including ANG and AFRES elements) to deploy from the continental US to the frontline in Europe. Ready to fight and familiarized with their area of operations they could have joined the war immediately, drawing on pre-positioned weapons stocks. As the Soviet threat diminished towards the end of the 1980s, all TAC’s preparations, planning and capabilities were tested for real following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. Suddenly sent to Middle East in the countries surrounding Iraq, those well tested plans saw TAC aircraft form a major part of all coalition air forces that took part in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1992, in a major USAF reorganisation TAC became Air Combat Command.

Key Publishing Ltd Jet: The Engine the Changed the World

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe invention of the jet engine had a profound effect on the world. Commercial jet aircraft revolutionised travel, opening up every corner of the planet. Few know that the jet engine was invented by an Englishman in 1929. The invention was a masterstroke of genius by 21-year-old Frank Whittle, replacing the piston engine’s thousands of reciprocating parts with one part: a single smoothly revolving turbine. Although the world’s first jet airliner was the British de Havilland Comet, Britain then gave away the technology – not only to the United States but to the Soviet Union as well. The Jet Set, the air hostess and the package holiday all followed. The dream of cheap, exotic travel had been realised. Yet, just like the impact of the internet, there were downsides to the world-reaching power of this phenomenon. Jet tells the story of this brilliant new technology, how it shrank the world and how it changed life forever.

Book SynopsisThe Boeing 737 was developed following the success of the 707 and 727, offering airlines an alternative to the larger models - ideal for shorter routes with fewer passengers. It undertook its maiden flight in 1967 and began flying commercially for Lufthansa as the 737-100. A significant order from United Airlines saw the slightly larger 737-200 built, which would soon become the standard size model. Despite slow sales initially, these early models would eventually prove to be an enormous success, and herald the beginnings of a family of airliners that are still in production today as the 737 MAX. By the time the final 737-200 was delivered in 1988, over 1,000 examples had been built for customers around the world. These included military variants and those capable of carrying cargo. Today, a small number remain in service, providing a useful role in serving Canada's remote communities and in developing countries. With over 150 images, this book looks at the history of the Boeing 737-100 and -200 and the many airlines and operators around the world that have flown them.

Book SynopsisThe history of El Al, the Israeli national flag carrier, dates back to September 1948, when a former Israeli Air Force C-54B-15-DO Skymaster cargo/passenger aircraft was repurposed for paying passengers.Since that time, the airline has connected Israel with many destinations around the world, as far afield as New York in the US and Johannesburg in South Africa.Today it operates with a fleet of 46 passenger planes and one cargo aircraft. The airline's growth and development have been determined in part by its geographical location and the politics of its nation.Challenged by the lack of opportunity to refuel mid-journey, Israel's isolation provided the incentive and opportunity to design and build jets that flew further and used fuel more efficiently in order to travel faster across greater distances. The airline upgrades its aircraft regularly, with new, efficient aircraft a priority. Its back catalogue of aircraft includes Boeing 707 narrow-body passenger aircraft, as well as 720s, 747s and 787 Dream liners.Today its Boeing 787 aircraft are helping expand the airline's routes as well as profitability. El Al's aircraft have often participated in major humanitarian relief operations and repatriated Jewish peoples to Israel. With more than 100 historic and contemporary photographs of El Al's aircraft in action, this is a highly illustrated account of the growth and development of a national carrier.
