City Books London's Monumental Walks: 16 Walks Taking in the
Book SynopsisNot surprisingly in a city as old and rich in history as London, there's a wealth of public monuments, statues and memorials: in fact London probably has more statues than any other major city in the world. It's streets, squares, parks and gardens are packed with monuments to kings and queens, military heroes, politicians and local worthies, artists and writers, and notables from every walk of life - including a few anti-heroes such as Cromwell and Wat Tyler. Many monuments celebrate great victories - not surprisingly - but there are also those that recall less momentous events, and even some that we may wish to disown today Everywhere you look in London there are statues to be seen: there are literally hundreds of major artworks. Many subjects remain famous (or infamous), some once-famous, while others are obscure and known only locally - but all contributed to this great city and nation in some way and most are deserving of their place in history. Some are works of art, others less so, but most are worthy in some way. What's more, we haven't just included statues and monuments, but also magnificent fountains, wall reliefs, street art and furniture, graffiti and murals, and more. Our 20 walks take in most of the city's great monuments, statues and memorials, but also many obscure, but no less interesting, other public works of art. All you need to enjoy them is a stout pair of shoes, a sense of adventure - and this book. We hope you find them as enjoyable and rewarding as we did.

Both countries have industrial cities and tourist-oriented cities, as well as important cultural heritage including beautiful islands, mountains, rivers, gardens, walking paths, battlefields and castles. This book offers another chance for deepening our friendship and helping Japanese people understand our unique Scottish culture.' From the foreword by MIKE CANTLAY, Chairman, Visit Scotland The guide was created to cater for a growing number of younger visitors from Japan who want to discover the Scotland beyond the castles and golf courses. EXPRESS.CO.UK The list of dos and don'ts represents a cultural minefield for inexperienced travellers, particularly those ignorant of the finer points of Scottish football. It implores readers not to approach "men in green or blue football tops" and to steer clear of council estates. Don't be surprised, it adds, when the first sign of rain does not produce a flurry of umbrella-opening. GUARDIAN

Quercus Publishing Beached in Calabria
Book Synopsis'Belissimo' - Daily Mail 'an amusing and charming read...Ross is the champion of the impulsive adventurer...If you are interested in Italy, in travel writing and the tales of a decent raconteur then this is for you.' - Paul Burke, NB Magazine Where do you go to when you only have a pittance for a home away from home for a huge family? Ian Ross realises that his small inheritance won't get him a place in France or even Spain, so he heads for southern Italy where he remembers the Blue Guide describing long empty sandy beaches in southern Calabria. When he arrives in Southern Italy he finds the house prices are encouragingly low. Why does no one go there? It's inaccessible and it's beloved of the Mafia. Not to be put off Ross stumes on the perfect beach on a crystal-clear bay in the deeply southern province of Reggio Calabria, an area he is soon advised is 'Bandit Country'. And the fact that there is a house right on the beach big enough for all the family at a price he can afford overcomes all fears and to a large extent all common sense. Buying it was only the beginning. Beached in Calabria catalogues the things that can go wrong in southern Italy for this English fish-out-of-waterman; he's out of his depth in a whirlpool of incomprehensible rules and regulations, family systems, conflicting advice and linguistic conundrums. Disaster follows disaster, but this travelogue encompasses tales of the friendships Ross makes on the way in this forgotten corner of Old Italy where the food and the 326 days of sunshine a year make for a perfect setting to a triumphant escapade.

Turtle Point Press Nomadologies
Book SynopsisNomadologies is a complex and brilliant evocation of the fractured and hyphenated mindset of the contemporary Turkish writer and thinker. Erdag Göknar takes us on a dazzling virtual world tour encompassing history, aesthetics, and politics, from Bosnia to Chechnya to the Silk Road to Union Square and back to the place that was once the center of the civilized world, Istanbul/Constantinople. Turkophiles like myself have been waiting for years for Göknar to publish his findings from the multilayered world he inhabits, and here it is. This is a book I shall be returning to often.Richard Tillinghast, author of An Armchair Traveller’s History of Istanbul and cotranslator of Dirty August by Edip CanseverThe poems in Nomadologies connect moments of separation and union in a life lived between Turkey and America. Taking its organizing principle from the grammar of nomadic life, Nomadologies reveals that mobility is the most efficient strategy for sustaining contradictory existences. Here, we learn that poetry is a landscape of inhabitation, and perpetual exile is one's home.Erdag Göknar is a scholar, writer, and translator. He is best known for his award-winning translation of Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk's novel My Name Is Red. He is a faculty member at Duke University where he researches, teaches, and writes on Turkish Studies.Trade Review"Göknar writes against silence and the esoteric, offering narratives and lyrics that are dense with multicultural referents and language, yet readily accessible and full of human feeling."—The Georgia Review“In the space of a few lines we traverse [Göknar's] personal and family history and the paradoxes of how memory is refracted through different family members. The cumulative effect is understated and affecting.”—Hurriyet Daily News

De Gruyter Frankreich in Potsdam
Book SynopsisPotsdam has more in common with the magnificent residence of the French Sun King Louis XIV, Versailles, than with any other French city. Did the city of Potsdam become what it is today not least because the Prussian rulers sought to emulate the French court during the 17th and 18th centuries? Potsdam’s institutions house many artistic highlights from our neighbouring country, like French Impressionist works from the Hasso Plattner Collection in Museum Barberini and the French Rococo paintings to be found in the palaces of Sanssouci and Neues Palais. These outstanding art venues are the main stops on a new city tour developed in collaboration between the Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens and Museum Barberini.
