Book SynopsisTrade Review“Oscar Munoz saved United Airlines. He wrote this book about the hard work, heart, and commitment of the people of the airline who wanted a leader to pull us together and fight for our shared future. Oscar healed deeply damaged morale on day one with a message of unity and hope, and I agree wholeheartedly with his recognition of my amazing colleagues. This is an incredibly inspiring story—and an instructional one for the kind of inclusive leadership we need to solve the biggest problems we face today.” — Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants–CWA, AFL-CIO “Oscar Munoz shows the heart of a true leader in Turnaround Time, sharing how he overcame incredible challenges to revive the fortunes of a legendary airline. It’s a story about building a company culture based on values such as trust, empathy, humility, and authenticity, which can transform a business and the world.” — Marc Benioff, chair and CEO of Salesforce “Oscar led United to new heights by starting from the inside out: investing first in frontline employees to empower them to better serve customers and earn their trust. His approach of listening, learning, and taking action is an inspirational lesson for leaders of our modern institutions who must earn stakeholder trust through bold action.” — Richard Edelman, CEO of Edelman “Oscar is the epitome of compassion and lives a life of triumph over adversity. He’s traveled the world and inspired so many people as a dynamic, charismatic, and empathetic leader. His passion for sharing his heart transplant story and raising awareness about the signs of heart disease have encouraged people to understand their own risk factors. The lessons and wisdom Oscar imparts remind us of what matters most.” — Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association “In this compelling story of personal survival and corporate revival, Oscar Munoz poignantly reminds us that the most important leadership test remains as it’s ever been: uniting people behind a common mission. Oscar rallied the people of United with principles of leadership that are both timely and timeless.” — Safra Catz, CEO of Oracle Corporation “The stories offer an intimate look at what it’s like to run a large corporation, and Munoz’s praise of his former employees makes a strong case that workers are central to a company’s success. This solid memoir delivers the goods.” — Publishers Weekly

  • Fundamentals of Transportation and Traffic

Emerald Publishing Limited Fundamentals of Transportation and Traffic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPresents the basic concepts in the transportation and traffic operations field. This book contains chapters on "tools", covering topics such as graphical methods, optimization, probability, stochastic processes, statistics and simulation, which are complemented by application chapters on traffic dynamics, control, observation, and scheduled modes.Trade ReviewRod Troutbeck It is refreshing to have a text that provides a complete understanding of background material that enables the reader to establish new research on a firm foundation. Daganzo's book provides this understanding and gives new insights in to contemporary issues. This text is a must for researchers and engineers who want the 'best' start possible. It should be recommended reading for all senior classes in transportation and traffic operations. H. Michael Zhang, University of Iowa I used Professor Daganzo's book in my traffic systems course at the University of Iowa and plan to use it as a text for a first year graduate core course in transportation at the University of California at Davis. What I like most about the book are its logical clarity and emphasis on fundamental concepts and principles rather than pure techniques. The book also contains many refreshing ideas on traffic flow theory and anyone who reads this text, whether a new comer or an old timer of this field, should be able to benefit from Professor Daganzo's insights. Thanasis Ziliaskopoulos, Northwestern University This is a long overdue masterpiece that pragmatically balances theory and tools for traffic and transportation operations. In times of over-emphasis on technological advancements, Daganzo reminds us of the importance of basic theory in understanding and carrying out traffic and transportation operations. Chapter 4 is an excellent pedagogic treatise of traffic flow theory, nicely leading to traffic control in Chapter 5. These two chapters alone provide enough material for a class on traffic operations fundamentals. Chapter 6 is an ingenious presentation on observation and measurement methods for transportation systems. Daganzo's "building block" approach is successfully used for most of the topics covered, opening new ways for teaching transportation and traffic courses. The book is scholarly written, but it is still simple enough to be used by students and professionals entering the field.Table of ContentsPrefaceThe Time-Space Diagram Cumulative Plots Optimization Traffic Flow Theory Control Observation and Measurement Scheduled Transportation Systems References

Emerald Publishing Limited Theoretical Foundations of Travel Choice Modeling

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDocuments the theoretical foundations of travel choice modeling. Divided into three parts, Microeconomic Theory, Behavioral Decision Theory and Statistical Theory, this book extends approaches to travel choice modeling beyond the consumer theory developed in economics by applying theories from the fields of geography, psychology and statistics.Trade ReviewBertil Vihelmson a somewhat diverse but thoughtful reminder of the problematic theoretical assumptions of present travel forecasting. It sets out to introduce a descriptive psychological framework that may provide more realistic assumptions for modelling efforts. Geografiska Annaler John Dinwoodie, University of Plymouth, UK Heated musings over the strategists' classic tension between where we are now, and where we would like to be, have rarely failed to generate incisive and fruitful debate, and that is precisely what this volume offers. In a collection of over twenty commissioned offerings by contributors with glittering credentials, the theoretical foundations of travel choice modelling are not only well and truly shaken, tried and tested, but also tentatively relaid. Each one of these papers is worthy of serious and extended study, luring even casual or unenlightened readers into a deeper understanding of pertinent historical perspectives, whilst seductively proffering a change in the way ahead... Travel choice modelling is by nature multi-disciplinary...for those readers willing to learn from colleagues in proximate disciplines there is a wealth of new ideas and experience presented here, along with pointers to challenges where they might themselves make contributions in this field. This volume should provide both useful reviews of past practice and seminal accounts of future practice for many years hence. Journal of Transport Geography Lidia P. Kostyniuk, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute ...succeeds at examining the behavioural credibility of travel choice models ... does show that the field is heading in a positive direction. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisExamines the changing regulatory climate for the liner shipping industry and explores managerial thinking about co-operation and competition within the industry. This book develops guiding principles for a common regulatory policy for liner shipping while proposing a framework for shipping managers to guide strategy formulation and implementation.Trade ReviewMichael Roe really useful for both academics and policy-makers ... develops a highly valuable set of guiding principles that are clearly useful for the industry and might even be acceptable to the regulators. ... The author's style and organisation of the work is excellent and despite its rather dull sounding topic, it is a thoroughly interesting book to read. ... wholly up to date, beautifully presented, delightfully written, combines theory and practice with ease and clarity and is thoroughly well argued. ... a very welcome addition to the literature. The author is to be congratulated on a text that is long overdue. Journal of Transport Geography Steven A. Bell Robustly bound with clear and informative tables and figures, and very well referenced, this book of 289 pages offers a logical and detailed examination of current strategic management issues in the liner shipping industry. It is aimed at current managers and regulators operating in the industry...due to the author's reliance on well-recognised economic models as the basis for analysis, it would be accessible to logistics and transport students, or others with an interest in the industry. ...Overall, this academic book is best suited to practitioners in the liner shipping industry, or people with a current interest in it, or a strong interest in developing one. Having read much of Mary Brooks' previous work, I am familiar with her detective-like research and eye for detail - this book does not disappoint. http://www.iolt.org.uk/library/BR2Nov01.htm Bernhard J. Abrahamsson (the author's)...intention is to put forth a view of liner regulation from a managerial perspective - and she is successful. She also provides, at the end, guidelines for achieving such a regulatory climate...It is clear that Professor Brooks knows the field and perhaps equally important, she has done a very good job in sharing her knowledge...the textual analysis is likely to be of lasting value. International Journal of Maritime Economics James R. Carman ...a tightly packed compendium of the liner shipping industry today. The author...is to be applauded for tackling and organizing the complexities of the subject matter. Brooks concludes her book with 15 policy proposals...the principles are wide ranging...They set an agenda that warrants much discussion. The author is to be complimented for her efforts to point a way, one that will hopefully stimulate the wide-ranging and necessary discussion. Journal of the Transportation Research Forum Evelyn Thomchick ...an excellent resource on the ocean liner industry. It is well written and extremely well documented...would certainly be appropriate in a graduate seminar on transportation or an upper-level undergraduate course on ocean shipping or management of transportation companies. Book SynopsisTrade Review"Gudmundsson has set a benchmark for textbooks on aircraft design. Within its declared bounds this book is remarkably comprehensive, with introductory material, clearly presented mathematical tools with assumptions and derivations, notes on when and where to apply them and numerous real-world examples. Gudmundsson truly has a feel for design, something he tries to convey throughout, describing each task, the nature of the designer’s approach and the wide-ranging set of constraints to be addressed. As well as all the analytical work described above, aircraft design requires graphic skills. A real pleasure in this book is the high quality of the illustrations; Gudmundsson is right to be proud of them. Of the many textbooks on aircraft design this is my favourite. The author’s declared aim remained, as with the first edition, to gather information and procedures helpful to the designer. He has achieved this to a very impressive standard. By including all aspects, even organisation and management of the process, he has made this a valuable and comprehensive ‘go-to’ reference source." --John M Robertson, CEng MIMechE MRAeS, RAeS General Aviation GroupTable of Contents1. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. Book Synopsis From Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Hiltzik, the epic tale of the clash for supremacy between America’s railroad titans In 1869, when the final spike was driven into the transcontinental railroad, few were prepared for its seismic aftershocks. Once a hodgepodge of short, squabbling lines, America’s railways soon exploded into a titanic industry helmed by a pageant of speculators, crooks, and visionaries. The vicious competition between empire builders such as Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jay Gould, J. P. Morgan, and E. H. Harriman sparked stock market frenzies, panics, and crashes; provoked strikes that upended the relationship between management and labor; transformed the nation’s geography; and culminated in a ferocious two-man battle that shook the nation’s financial markets to their foundations and produced dramatic, lasting changes in the interplay of business and government.   Spanning four decades and featuring some of the most iconic figures of the Gilded Age, Iron Empires reveals how the robber barons drove the country into the twentieth century—and almost sent it off the rails.

Book SynopsisThis book addresses each of the Air Navigation Services'' five broad categories of services provided to air traffic during all phases of operation: air traffic management (ATM), communication, navigation and surveillance services (CNS), meteorological services for air navigation (MET), aeronautical information services (AIS) and search and rescue (SAR).This book is designed for working professionals in Air Transport Management, but also undergraduate and postgraduate students studying air transport management and aeronautical engineering. It will also be very helpful for the training of air traffic control officers (ATCOs). The book does not require any prior (specialist) knowledge as it is an introduction to air navigation service provider (ANSP) business. There is very little literature available that gives a detailed appreciation of the complexities, potential risks and issues associated with the provision of air navigation services. The role of this book is to fill this sTrade Review'This textbook on air traffic management should be required reading for anyone involved in the management or regulation of this key part of the air transport ecosystem. All the key issues of supplying sufficient capacity, limiting environmental damage and the appropriate charging of users are addressed by experts in their field. For me the most important chapters are those at the end, dealing with reform and what future airspace management could deliver.' Brian Pearce, Former-Chief Economist at IATA'This textbook provides thorough inside in the current world of global ATM. The history, the future and the complexity of air navigation service provisions are well described and offer the reader a good understanding of challenges of air traffic management.' Marc Baumgartner, IFATCA SESAR/EASA Coordinator'This book is an ambitious attempt to draw together the evolution and current performance of the hidden backbone of aviation, one of our truly global industries. Air traffic management is an under researched area of human activity and this book does much to fill that gap.' David McMillan, Chair, ATM Policy Institute'The publication of this textbook could not come at a better time. In 2023, the aviation community is facing unprecedented challenges, which are also rich of opportunities. Transformations are needed and on their way. I expect this book to be a thought-provoking and useful tool for both ATM professionals and students.' Book SynopsisWithin the developed world, airlines have responded to the advice of advocates for corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER) to use the intertwined dimensions of economics, society and environment to guide their business activities. However, disingenuously, the advocates and regulators frequently pay insufficient attention to the economics which are critical to airlinesâ sustainability and profits. This omission pushes airlines into the unprofitable domain of CSERplus. The author identifies alleged market inefficiencies and failures, examines CSERplus impacts on international competition and assesses the unintended consequences of the regulations. She also provides innovative ideas for future-proofing airlines. Clipped Wings is a treatise for business professionals featuring academic research as well as industry anecdotes. • Will Sustainability Fly

Taylor & Francis Will Sustainability Fly

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile international negotiations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been less than satisfactory, there is a presumption that a significant level of multi-lateral commitment will be realized at some point. International air and marine travel have been left to one side in past talks because the pursuit of agreement proceeds on the basis of commitment by sovereign nations and the effects of these specific commercial activities are, by their nature, difficult to corral and assign to specific national jurisdictions. However, air travel is increasing and, unless something is done, emissions from this segment of our world economy will form a progressively larger percentage of the total, especially as emissions fall in other activities. This book focuses on fuel. The aim is to provide background in technical and policy terms, from the broadest reliable sources of information available, for the necessary discourse on society's reaction to the evolving aviation emissions profile. It cTrade Review'While dealing professionally with the current technologies for generating biofuel, the book also points towards broader, philosophical questions about ecological justice and what we might owe to the future. It is a well-researched and well-written book and it contributes to the important dialogue about how we can fly without changing our planet irrevocably.'Dr Ben Daley, Policy School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Aerospace Table of ContentsWill Sustainability Fly?
