Taylor & Francis Cargo Claims
Book SynopsisCargo claims are the most frequent form of third-party liability incurred by carriers by sea and their P&I insurers. They are the bread-and-butter work of ship operators and P&I clubs, with each club handling thousands of cargo claims every year. Taylor & Francis Ltd Planning for Public Transport Accessibility
Book SynopsisBringing together a comparative analysis of the accessibility by public transport of 23 cities spanning four continents, this book provides a hands-on introduction to the evolution, rationale and effectiveness of a new generation of accessibility planning tools that have emerged since the mid-2000s. The Spatial Network Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems (SNAMUTS) tool is used as a practical example to demonstrate how city planners can find answers as they seek to improve public transport accessibility. Uniquely among the new generation of accessibility tools, SNAMUTS has been designed for multi-city comparisons. A range of indicators are employed in each city including: the effectiveness of the public transport network; the relationship between the transport network and land use activity; who gets access within the city; and how resilient the city will be. The cities selected enable a comparison between cities by old worldnew world; public transport modes; governance apTrade Review"The final chapter of the book (Chapter 9) summarizes the overall findings and reflects upon answers to introductory questions such as “What structures and types of urban form can optimize accessibility?” or “How should we invest in public transport infrastructure?” (p. 3) leading to the conclusion that a “one size fits all-appoach” (p. 291) does not provide a realistic accessibility-optimizing perspective. This is also what I consider the top contribution of this book. [T]his book an important and well-needed pioneering contribution for accessibility planners worldwide."Katrin Lättman, Journal of Transport GeographyPublic transit is an essential component of a sustainable future, but how to design a system that meets accessibility needs given finite budgets? Curtis and Scheurer offer help in the form of a sophisticated yet practical tool for analyzing transit accessibility. They demonstrate its use with a fascinating comparison across four continents that yields insightful lessons for planners. Susan Handy, University of California, Davis, USAThis is a unique and comprehensive sourcebook in the field of transport and urban planning. If you want to understand how cities and metropolitan areas around the globe are performing in terms of public transport accessibility, and what opportunities there are to improve it, read this book. PublicAffairs,U.S. No One at the Wheel: Driverless Cars and the Road
Book SynopsisOur time at the wheel is done. Driving will become illegal, as human drivers will be demonstrably more dangerous than cars that pilot themselves. Is this an impossible future, or a revolution just around the corner?Sam Schwartz, America's most celebrated transportation guru, describes in this book the revolution in self-driving cars. It will further erode our privacy, since the vehicle can relay our location at any moment. And, like every other computer-controlled device, it can be vulnerable to hacking.Right now, every major car maker here and abroad is working on bringing autonomous vehicles to consumers. The fleets are getting ready to roll and nothing will ever be the same, and this book shows us what the future has in store.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Debattista on Bills of Lading in Commodities
Book SynopsisDebattista on Bills of Lading in Commodity Trade provides not so much a linear road-map as a GPS system, allowing the reader to locate which aspect of the bill of lading is central to the dispute they are dealing with and evaluating that aspect from the perspective of each of: (1) the contract of sale; (2) carriage contract and (3) letter of credit. The title examines questions such as: How can a buyer ensure in their sale contract that the bill of lading the buyer receives from the seller gives them secure title to sue the carrier? What impact does the choice of a particular Incoterms rule have on whom the carrier can sue under the contract of carriage? Where there is a claim by a buyer/cargo-claimant for loss, damage or delay to goods, must they factor any gains or benefits made under the sale contract claim/settlement into the quantum claimed in the cargo-claim against the carrier? What is a ‘charterparty bill of lading’ - and can it be tendered under a letter of credit? When and why might a seller need to “switch” bills of lading for its buyer or its bank - and does the seller have a right to demand the switching of bills under the Hague-Visby Rules? All of these questions – and many others like them – cut across areas of law normally siloed in academic and practitioner texts. The purpose of this title is to make links and draw out connections, with a view to assisting lawyers when a dispute arises – and others drafting different contracts seeking to avoid problems arising in the first place. The fourth edition of this work, now bearing a new title and benefitting from the arrival of a co-author, has been fully revised to take account of case-law and regulatory developments in the twelve years since the last edition. Taylor & Francis Ltd Marine Insurance: Law and Practice
Book SynopsisMarine Insurance: Law and Practice, Second Edition, continues to provide the most comprehensive and integrated account of the English law and practice of marine insurance. It provides readers with a fresh and up-to-date review of the modern law in the light of traditional principles and rules of underlying commercial law, and the specific statutory rules of marine insurance as interpreted by case law, as moderated in practice by market practices and standard form marine insurance clauses. Francis Rose clarifies the law’s underlying framework of principles and illustrates how it works in common contractual situations, explaining how the different components of the law interact. The new edition has been updated to incorporate:• the most recent case law: there have been some very important judgments handed down since the book first published, including: The Cendor MOP, The Silva, The Resolute and The Marina Iris• the implications of the introduction of: Institute Cargo Clauses 2009, the effect of the Gambling Act 2005 and the Third Parties (Rights Against Insurers) Act 2010 Law Commission reform proposalsThe book explores in detail the following areas:• the nature of insurance• insurable interest• the insurance contract• the premium• insured risks• marine risks• exclusions• losses• claims• subrogation• double insuranceTrade Review"The second edition has, in my view, achieved the difficult task of surpassing the first edition in terms of scholarship and analytical discussion. Whittles Publishing Flight from the Croft
Book SynopsisAs a barefoot lad in the Outer Hebrides, Bill Innes dreamed the impossible dream of becoming a pilot and this book tells how that dream came to pass. The author's career of over forty years spanned a period of incredible advances in the air - now regarded as a golden era in aviation. After gaining his RAF wings in Canada he really started to learn his trade by flying pre-war Dakotas for British European Airways around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland - one of the most testing aviation-operating areas in the world. The experience was to stand him in good stead as he moved to London to fly classic 20th century British aircraft such as the Viscount, Comet, Vanguard and Trident. The narrative comes alive through tales of the many characters encountered in a time before flight recorders. There are authentic versions of some of the most famous anecdotes in the folklore of the sky, but also reflections on training philosophy and techniques which have a relevance outwith aviation. Along the way he explored his limits, barnstorming vintage aircraft in Tiger Club displays - surviving one breach of those limits which should have proved fatal! Progressing to being a training captain, Bill was happy to pass on his experience to colleagues. As one of the team that introduced the Boeing 757 to British Airways, post-retirement, he was privileged to be the trainer on the first flights of charter airlines such as Air 2000 and Canada 3000 before his swansong, flying long range Boeing 767s for Alitalia. Technical background is lightened by the thread of humour which runs throughout and there are also some sage words of comfort for the nervous passenger.Trade Review'...is generously illustrated with many personal photographs, and is an engaging and delightful read'. The Log, BALPA -------------------- `There are copious good quality illustrations - some of BEA Herons took my eye in particular. ...well written, with lashings of humour, and will no doubt prove very nostalgic for those many members who started their commercial career in the piston era'. Air Pilot -------------------- 'His accounts of planes and the people involved with them are both perceptive and amusing. Go, fly with Bill!' Scottish Island Explorer -------------------- `...funny, full of anecdotes and bristling with unforgettable characters'. West Highland Free Press -------------------- `...contains a wealth of stories from the hilarious to the heart warming to the tragic, and includes some of the pranks he got up to with others in his early years as a pilot. ...his memoir is a fascinating, informative and entertaining story...' Am Bratach -------------------- `...an inspirational book... ...an amazing account of an insider's view of commercial aviation in Britain... ...his tales of flying, initially mainly based in Scotland, bring vividly to life a world that is now long gone. ...should be regarded as essential reading by anyone with an interest in aviation, and especially commercial aviation'. Special Interest Model Books The Countryman's Steam Manual
Book SynopsisFor nearly thirty years, John Haining (under the pen name 'Countryman's Steam') contributed a vast range of designs and constructional articles to the pages of Model Engineer magazine. These covered all types and sizes of engine:- steam traction engines for the road and field and standing engines, and the way they worked with ploughs, cider mills, elevators and threshing machines. The articles were always popular with those seeking steam experiences away from the railways, and as a result the author built up an authoritative reputation for the extent of his knowledge in this area. As a technical consultant to Model Engineer, the author built up an enviable reputation for the extent of his knowledge and the immense trouble he took to reply fully and clearly to readers' queries and problems. This book was originally written in 1982 to expound on some of the problems encountered by engine owners, both in full size and in small scale. It places particular emphasis on design and construction, and the care of steel boilers, with formulae and data used by the top firms. A new and enlarged edition was extended to cover more fully the design, construction and care of steel boilers in general, with formulae and data used by firms of repute. An extra chapter was included covering the author's designs of three vertical boilers, the Sentinel, the Caradoc and a 3 inch scale version.Table of ContentsSteel boilers and welding requirements. Steel boilers - vertical types. Copper boilers. Testing and care. Safety valves. Boiler feed pumps and engine notes. Wheel construction and general platework.

University of Hertfordshire Press Passing Through: The Grand Junction Canal in West
Book SynopsisThe fifty years from the last decade of the eighteenth century saw great changes in Britain. Significant technological and economic change, not to mention wars, affected great swathes of the population and profoundly changed many aspects of life. In this book Fabian Hiscock considers this dramatic upheaval as it played out in western Hertfordshire, focusing in particular on just one of the many innovations of the time: the Grand Junction Canal, created to connect the Midlands with London. Having described the complex process of creating the Canal itself, the author turns to how western Hertfordshire experienced, and responded to, the new trade route that now traversed its fields and settlements. In the area’s towns and villages - particularly Rickmansworth, Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring - the Canal made an impact, but to what extent did it live up to the promises made by its promoters? And what were the impacts on trade and transport, on work and home life? Did it create jobs and wealth for local people? Or did it simply pass through, leaving those living on either side relatively unaffected? Whether and in what way western Hertfordshire changed as a result of the Grand Junction Canal is the focus of this work. 1841 is the chosen end date for the study period because of the coincidence of the Census undertaken that year, which sheds some light on the industrial make-up of the area, the tithe awards made between 1838 and 1844, allowing study of the Canal’s effect on land ownership and usage across the area, and the start of the London and Birmingham Railway’s real economic effect. In combining canal history with a detailed social and economic study of a part of the county that is not much written about, Fabian Hiscock has written a superbly researched and wide-reaching book that will be of interest to a broad range of readers.

Columbia University Press Asias Space Race
Book SynopsisJames Clay Moltz explores efforts by China, Japan, India, South Korea, and ten other countries to boost their civil, commercial, and, in some cases, military profiles in orbit. He investigates these nations’ divergent goals and their tendency to focus on national solutions rather than on regionwide cooperation and multilateral initiatives.Trade ReviewClay Moltz's masterful survey of rapidly developing Asian space programs sheds new light on the complex economic, military, and political forces driving them. The significance of Asian space efforts extends beyond immediate technical and scientific achievements and foreshadows the future of international cooperation and competition across the Asia-Pacific region. -- Scott Pace, director, Space Policy Institute, George Washington University Asian states are latecomers to space, yet their collective choices will shape the space environment in the twenty-first century. Clay Moltz has written a theoretically informed, comparative book that expertly analyzes the strategic, economic, and domestic factors driving Asian states into space. He highlights the national and regional dynamics that are making space an increasingly 'congested, contested, and competitive environment,' but also identifies common interests and incentives that could support more cooperative outcomes. A must-read for space experts and Asia specialists alike. -- Phillip C. Saunders, National Defense University, coauthor of The Paradox of Power: Sino-American Strategic Restraint in an Era of Vulnerability As humankind enters a new and more globalized spacefaring era, many hope outer space can become a commons for cooperation. Yet Asian space powers risk a more divisive and destabilizing prospect: an Asian space race.
