  • Painting as an Art

Princeton University Press Painting as an Art

Book SynopsisTrade Review"There are books aplenty on painting and art, but this is the first to explain seriously what makes painting an art, and it is our good luck to have it from a notable philosopher who is also on an intimate footing with the tradition of Western painting and who knows how to stand in front of a painting and spin tales that sparkle with truth. . . . Wollheim's interpretations are bold, revisionary and cogent. Only a philosopher of his rare gifts, and a connoisseur with his command of the art-historical tradition, could possibly have the confidence to bring off his feat of virtuoso interpretation."---Flint Schier, New York Times Book Review"It is one of the achievements of Richard Wollheim's superb book that it offers an extremely subtle sense of the mind's functioning, while providing a theory of critical relevance: it shows how psychological and cultural factors enter a painting's content, and how arguments on relevance can be conducted in difficult cases."---Michael Podro, Times Literary Supplement

  • Loving Orphaned Space

Temple University Press,U.S. Loving Orphaned Space

Book SynopsisHow we relate to orphaned space matters. Voids, marginalia, empty spacesfrom abandoned gas stations to polluted waterwaysare created and maintained by politics, and often go unquestioned. In Loving Orphaned Space, Mrill Ingram provides a call to action to claim and to cherish these neglected spaces and make them a source of inspiration through art and/or remuneration.Ingram advocates not only for urban greening and green planning, but also for radical caring. These efforts create awareness and understanding of ecological connectivity and environmental justice issuesfrom the expropriation of land from tribal nations, to how race and class issues contribute to creating orphaned space. Case studies feature artists, scientists, and community collaborations in Chicago, New York, and Fargo, ND, where grounded and practical work of a fundamentally feminist nature challenges us to build networks of connection and care. The work of environmental artists who venture into and transform these discoTrade Review“In a time when people need places to gather and be outside in nature, Loving Orphaned Space is an essential guide for how to activate forgotten spaces in our landscape. It strikes the perfect balance of being inspiring and practical. With lively examples and impressive research, Ingram took me by the hand and walked me through the nuances of working with orphaned spaces. If only I had this book when I started out as an eco-artist!”—Stacy Levy, artist“In this remarkable book, Mrill Ingram challenges us to think of vacant land not as abandoned but as orphaned. She takes us on tours where we meet communities and artists who have adopted orphaned land and are using community art to care for these places. Ingram’s stories have changed the way I see and think about the land around me. I now see orphaned land wherever I go, and because of this book, I know how—and why—to love and care for these places.”—Samuel Dennis Jr., Professor of Planning and Landscape Architecture and Director of the Environmental Design Lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison"As a result of the book’s cross-categorical structure, it has a broad range of appeal, connecting ecological restoration to activism, social justice, art and environmentalism, and public engagement. It also presents a model for collaboration: bringing together artists and scientists to work with community groups. I can envision an urban planning studio project focusing on caring for orphaned space as a rich and meaningful life experience for students."—Journal of Urban Affairs"Loving Orphaned Space offers important insights into nature-society relations regarding dwelling, home and belonging, and a conceptual framework about processes of disconnection that also materialize in housing.... [T]he book is recommended to urban scholars, artists, activists, or anyone with an interest in ecological restoration, maintenance and repair studies, feminist ethics, or creative and collaborative knowledge production."—Housing Studies

  • Unruly Visions

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn Unruly Visions Gayatri Gopinath brings queer studies to bear on investigations of diaspora and visuality, tracing the interrelation of affect, archive, region, and aesthetics through an examination of a wide range of contemporary queer visual culture. Spanning film, fine art, poetry, and photography, these cultural forms—which Gopinath conceptualizes as aesthetic practices of queer diaspora—reveal the intimacies of seemingly disparate histories of (post)colonial dwelling and displacement and are a product of diasporic trajectories. Countering standard formulations of diaspora that inevitably foreground the nation-state, as well as familiar formulations of queerness that ignore regional gender and sexual formations, she stages unexpected encounters between works by South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Australian, and Latinx artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Akram Zaatari, and Allan deSouza. Gopinath shows how their art functions as regional queer archives that Trade Review"Unruly Visions is a significant addition to the groundbreaking Perverse Modernities series published by Duke University Press and edited by Jack Halberstam and Lisa Lowe. . . . This book is highly recommended for academic libraries, especially those that serve institutions with heavy emphasis on research in visual studies, contemporary art history, postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality studies, and diaspora studies." -- Andrew Wang * ARLIS/NA Reviews *"Unruly Visions demonstrates how, in curating and (re)positioning juxtaposed archives, regions and temporalities, new affective linkages are formed. Sitting at the intersection of queer, affect and area studies, this book peers backwards into queer regional archives with unruly, resistant and keen eyes that look to new modes of curating, writing and scholarship that all see(k) to confound conventional conceptions of local/global and metropolis/diaspora divisions." -- Polly Hember * LSE Review of Books *"Unruly Visions is a formidable, powerful, and necessary study of queer diasporas that a wide range of readers, from the general public to diaspora studies scholars, will at once find illuminating and profound." -- Shabnam Rathee and Rahul K. Gairola * South Asian Review *"Gopinath’s arguments are complicated but elegant and powerful. . . . I deeply recommend this well-written and thought-provoking book. We can compellingly travel through the various queer artworks following Gopinath’s guide to destruct contemporary modern normativities, which is surely a much-needed project. Researchers of queer subjects and theory, and humanities scholars and social scientists working on issues of immigration and globalization, as well as laypersons interested in queer diaspora and queer art will enjoy this book. In the end, I found myself inspired by Gopinath to queer everything constantly, including queerness itself." -- Weejun Park * Antipode *"Gopinath’s theorization of the region offers transgender studies a new analytic to meet the challenge of undoing its US exceptionalism. . . . [Her] reading of regions offers a method to draw connections between multiple regions in the way they disrupt and get folded within nation-states." -- Sayan Bhattacharya * TSQ *"Unruly Visions provides unique insight into the ways in which aesthetics of queerness provide potentially alternative lenses through which to view the concepts of region and area." -- Hafsa Arain * Asian Journal of Social Science *"Centering contemporary art of the queer diaspora, Unruly Visions develops a queer optic across regions and across archives in a poignantly affective register, as she offers a blueprint for what aesthetic analysis located within and across diasporas might look and feel like. Crucially, this book proposes a radical relationality, embracing José Muñoz’s utopian horizon of queer possibility." -- Natasha Bissonauth * Women & Performance *“With the author’s insistence on questioning some of the most widely held and least criticised notions of queer belonging, this text becomes invaluable in considering alternative, deviant futures in our midst. Unruly Visions is to be held as a necessary engagement for those scholars interested in advocating relational and relevant queer theory that seeks out the potential of unexpected and strange affiliations and intimacies against the odds.” -- Lars Olav Aaberg * Feminist Review *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction. • Horn or The Counterside of Media

Duke University Press Horn or The Counterside of Media

Book SynopsisWe regularly touch and handle media devices. At the same time, media devices such as body scanners, car seat pressure sensors, and smart phones scan and touch us. In Horn, Henning Schmidgen reflects on the bidirectional nature of touch and the ways in which surfaces constitute sites of mediation between interior and exterior. Schmidgen uses the concept of 'horn'—whether manifested as a rhinoceros horn or a musical instrument—to stand for both natural substances and artificial objects as spaces of tactility. He enters into creative dialogue with artists, scientists, and philosophers, ranging from Salvador Dalí, William Kentridge, and Rebecca Horn to Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, and Marshall McLuhan, who plumb the complex interplay between tactility and technological and biological surfaces. Whether analyzing how Dalí conceived of images as tactile entities during his “rhinoceros phase” or examining the problem of tactility in Thomas PynchoTrade Review"As a scholar of touch and technology but not, it must be said, of media, I was rarely surprised by the historical content or media examples. • Poetic Thinking Today: An Essay

Stanford University Press Poetic Thinking Today: An Essay

Book SynopsisThinking is much broader than what our science-obsessed, utilitarian culture often takes it to be. More than mere problem solving or the methodical comprehension of our personal and natural circumstances, thinking may take the form of a poem, a painting, a sculpture, a museum exhibition, or a documentary film. Exploring a variety of works by contemporary artists and writers who exemplify poetic thinking, this book draws our attention to one of the crucial affordances of this form of creative human insight and wisdom: its capacity to help protect and cultivate human freedom. All the contemporary works of art and literature that Poetic Thinking Today examines touch on our recent experiences with tyranny in culture and politics. They express the uninhibited thoughts and ideas of their creators even as they foster poetic thinking in us. In an era characterized by the global reemergence of authoritarian tendencies, Amir Eshel writes with the future of the humanities in mind. He urges the acknowledgment and cultivation of poetic thinking as a crucial component of our intellectual pursuits in general and of our educational systems more specifically. Trade Review"In this beautifully woven book, Eshel demonstrates what twenty-first-century 'thinking without a banister' can be: a life-affirming chance to open up the world poetically and ethically to new and transformative possibilities."—Todd Samuel Presner, University of California, Los Angeles"Poetic Thinking Today should be required reading for defenders of the humanities in our current political moment. Eshel's assiduous research, sensitive readings, and light touch of self-reflection make for a moving, inspiring essay: a testament to the enduring relevance of thinking as freedom, of art as resistance."—Lital Levy, Princeton University"In this beautiful, brilliant, and moving study, Eshel calls attention to poetic thinking as indispensable to understanding the human condition and especially to the challenge of defining freedom without limitations. Itself an enactment of embodied and empowered thinking, reading, and observing, his book offers a guide to a meaningful and responsible life."—Ulrich Baer, New York University"This exciting work asks important questions and defends the significance of the humanities. One of Eshel's inspirations is Arendt's ideal of 'thinking without banisters.' He has the intellectual daring to follow her example. Highly recommended."—B. Almon, CHOICE"Even if knowledge is power, the capacity to judge cannot be entirely subsumed by power but offers a way out of our current dilemmas. It shares this openness with art....Poetic Thinking alerts us to the relevance of our capacity to judge for both art and morality. [Eshel] has written a practical guide to recall and activate our capacity for judgment—and exactly in this heartfelt invitation for us to use our capacity to judge rests its explosive power."—Volkmar Mühleis, DeutschlandfunkTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. • Critique of Critique

Stanford University Press Critique of Critique

Book SynopsisWhat is critique? How is it used and abused? At a moment when popular discourse is saturated with voices confronting each other about not being critical enough, while academic discourses proclaim to have moved past critique, this provocative book reawakens the foundational question of what 'critique' is in the first place. Roy Ben-Shai inspects critique as an orientation of critical thinking, probing its structures and assumptions, its limits and its risks, its history and its possibilities. The book is a journey through a landscape of ideas, images, and texts from diverse sources—theological, psychological, etymological, and artistic, but mainly across the history of philosophy, from Plato and Saint Augustine, through Kant and Hegel, Marx and Heidegger, up to contemporary critical theory. Along the way, Ben-Shai invites the reader to examine their own orientation of thought, even at the moment of reading the book; to question popular discourse; and to revisit the philosophical canon, revealing affinities among often antagonistic traditions, such as Catholicism and Marxism. Most importantly, Critique of Critique sets the ground for an examination of alternative orientations of critical thinking, other ways of inhabiting and grasping the world.Trade Review"Ben-Shai exposes the rhizomatic orientations of critique, its multiple topologies, chronologies, positionalities, perversions and betrayals. A masterful analysis of where we are and what we are doing when we engage in critique."—Peg Birmingham, DePaul University"This is one hell of a book—a decisive intervention in the inheritance of the critical theory tradition. Political philosophers and political theorists will want to read this, as will everyone concerned with criticism in film and the arts today."—Anne O'Byrne, Stony Brook University"What does it mean to orient ourselves critically rather than in some other way? In answering this question Ben-Shai brilliantly shows how to critically circumscribe the limits of critique."—Andrew Cutrofello, Loyola University Chicago"Ben-Shai orients, in a remarkable way, the critical theory that emerged in particular from Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno'sDialectic of Enlightenment(1944).... Valuable for those interested in social philosophy and critical theory. Highly recommended."—J. C. Swindal, CHOICE"If critique is the act of pointing, Ben-Shai points both at the hand of the finger that is pointing and its environment. The book aims to bring the structural premises and essential features of critique into view to limit its scope, which Ben-Shai fears has become relentlessly repetitious and blind to its own repetitions."—O. • The Arts of Logistics

Stanford University Press The Arts of Logistics

Book SynopsisWe live in a world where nothing is untouched by supply chainsart included. In this major contribution to the study of contemporary culture and supply chains, Michael Shane Boyle has assembled a global inventory of aesthetics since the 1950s that reveals logistics to be a pervasive means of artistic production. The Arts of Logistics provides a new map of supply chain capitalism, scrutinizing how artists retool technologies designed for circulating commodities. What emerges is a magisterial account of the logistics revolution that foregrounds the role played by art in the long downturn of global capitalism. With chapters on art produced from technologies including ships, barrels, containers, and drones, Boyle narrates the long history of art's connection to logistics, beginning in the transatlantic slave trade and continuing today in Silicon Valley's dreams of automation. The global reach of the artists considered reflects the geographies of supply chain capitalism itself. In taking stock of how performance, sculpture, and popular culture are entangled in trade and racialized labor regimes, Boyle profiles influential work by artists such as Christo and Allan Kaprow alongside that of contemporary figures including Cai Guo-Qiang and Selina Thompson. This incisive study demonstrates that art and logistics are linked by the infrastructures and violence that keep supply chains moving.

Book SynopsisHow new media art informed by feminism yields important and original insights about interacting with technologies In A Capsule Aesthetic, Kate Mondloch examines how new media installation art intervenes in the fields of technoscience and new materialism, showing how three diverse artists—Pipilotti Rist, Patricia Piccinini, and Mariko Mori—contribute to the urgent conversation about everyday technology and the ways it constructs our bodies. A Capsule Aesthetic establishes the unique insights that feminist theory offers to new media art and new materialisms, offering a fuller picture of human–nonhuman relations. In-depth readings of works by Rist, Piccinini, and Mori explore such questions as the role of the contemporary art museum in our experience of media art, how the human is conceived of by biotechnologies, and how installation art can complicate and enrich contemporary science’s understanding of the brain. With vivid, firsthand descriptions of the artworks, Mondloch takes the reader inside immersive installation pieces, showing how they allow us to inhabit challenging theoretical concepts and nonanthropomorphic perspectives. Striving to think beyond the anthropocentric and fully consider the material world, A Capsule Aesthetic brings new approaches to questions surrounding our technology-saturated culture and its proliferation of human-to-nonhuman interfaces.Trade Review"Mondloch shows that new media art installations and theories of feminist materialism inform one another in ways of interest to artists, art historians, and new media and feminist scholars."—CHOICE"Mondloch’s approach couples aesthetics and ethics through activist prose that is unafraid to embrace populism or pleasure, or to revisit theoretical and historical misreadings of the past (and present). This book does not attempt to explain anything. Rather, it practices, and invites us to practice, conceptual-material engagements with art, and thus sensation, perception, and action. Such practice, the author convincingly argues over the entirety of her manuscript, is intrinsically feminist."—Theory & Event"Mondloch shows that new media art installations and theories of feminist materialism inform one another in ways of interest to artists, art historians, and new media and feminist scholars."—CHOICE"Mondloch’s approach couples aesthetics and ethics through activist prose that is unafraid to embrace populism or pleasure, or to revisit theoretical and historical misreadings of the past (and present). • Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in

University of Minnesota Press Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in

Book SynopsisTraces a tradition of ironic and irreverent environmentalism, asking us to rethink the movement’s reputation for gloom and doomActivists today strive to educate the public about climate change, but sociologists have found that the more we know about alarming issues, the less likely we are to act. Meanwhile, environmentalists have acquired a reputation as gloom-and-doom killjoys. Bad Environmentalism identifies contemporary texts that respond to these absurdities and ironies through absurdity and irony—as well as camp, frivolity, irreverence, perversity, and playfulness. Nicole Seymour develops the concept of “bad environmentalism”: cultural thought that employs dissident affects and sensibilities to reflect critically on our current moment and on mainstream environmental activism. From the television show Wildboyz to the short film series Green Porno, Seymour shows that this tradition of thought is widespread—spanning animation, documentary, fiction film, performance art, poetry, prose fiction, social media, and stand-up comedy since at least 1975. Seymour argues that these texts reject self-righteousness and sentimentality, undercutting public negativity toward activism and questioning basic environmentalist assumptions: that love and reverence are required for ethical relationships with the nonhuman and that knowledge is key to addressing problems like climate change.Funny and original, Bad Environmentalism champions the practice of alternative green politics. From drag performance to Indigenous comedy, Seymour expands our understanding of how environmental art and activism can be pleasurable, even in a time of undeniable crisis.Trade Review"Bad Environmentalism confronts serious environmental problems by way of ‘unserious’ texts. Nicole Seymour takes on complex ideas with lucidity, economy, and a witty sense of humor. Against the familiar affects that tend to characterize both environmentalism and environmental studies—such as awe, love, guilt, reverence, and earnestness—Bad Environmentalism pits less solemn alternatives, including playfulness, impropriety, irreverence, irony, frivolity, and glee. I am a convert. Bad environmentalists, unite!"—Jennifer K. Ladino, author of Reclaiming Nostalgia: Longing for Nature in American Literature"In an era in which environmental crises have been normalized and environmentalists are viewed by many as overly earnest irritants, Nicole Seymour gives us something we crave (even if we’re loathe to admit it!). Bad Environmentalism offers stunningly original, creative, and playful readings of a diverse range of cultural forms, refuses the binaries of eco-purity politics, and advances a hearty support of ambiguity, irreverence, contradiction, humor, and pleasure, while holding firm against the racism and homophobia that often undergird mainstream environmentalist campaigns and logics. This is a challenging, often hilarious, and game-changing book."—David Naguib Pellow, author of What is Critical Environmental Justice? "As it turns out, climate change and the environment can be a laughing matter—at least, at an absurd or satirical level."—Foreword Reviews "Bad Environmentalism stands as an important example of the ways that humanities scholarship can make important interventions into issues of great political importance such as climate change."—LSE Review of Books "A valuable contribution to ecocriticism"—CHOICE "Given the increasingly flawed assumption that environmental knowledge will inevitably lead to action, Seymour’s Bad Environmentalism creates a space to engage with texts and critical approaches that question, ironize, and challenge the limits of environmental knowledge and feeling, and that open up new ways of thinking ecologically."—The Goose "One must give credit to Bad Environmentalism for creating space for such self-reflexivity among political activists, scholars, and students alike."—Social and Cultural Geography "Films... burden the environmental movement with demands for an unattainable and easily critiqued form of perfect environmental morality. Rather, as Bad Environmentalism unswervingly proposes, environmentalists do not need to be perfect. Demands of flawlessness often allow those who deny climate change to consistently define activists as hypocritical when those campaigners drive gas-powered cars to protests, use jet fuel to fly to movie premieres, or load trash bins with protest signs."—Interface "This book was a joy to read. That is not how I feel about anything Wendell Berry or Terry Tempest Williams ever wrote, however, and Nicole Seymour’s aim (in part) is to explain why, and why I should not feel ashamed about it. Environmentalism, she insists, is a performance, and, more often than not, its performance has featured suffocating earnestness, sanctimony, seriousness, and self-righteousness. Bad Environmentalism exposes and challenges this “good affect” by turning attention away from the mainstream and toward “dissident” cultural margins. "—Environmental History "Calling for alternative and expressive environmentalisms, Nicole Seymour’s Bad Environmentalism exposes the limited affects associated with mainstream environmentalism."—ISLE "She has crafted an important book that asks us—but also teaches us—to drop hierarchies of morality and identity and open our eyes to alternative visions of surviving on this planet, equitably, together."—Public Books "I consider Seymour’s analysis a crucial intervention in the privileging of the mainstream environmental messages found in documentaries by Al Gore, James Balog, and others. "—The Year’s Work in Critical and Cultural Theory "A crucial intervention in the privileging of the mainstream environmental messages found in documentaries by Al Gore, James Balog, and others."—Ecocriticism "Nicole Seymour’s Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in the Ecological Age offers its archive of “bad environmentalism” to help dismantle the affective and ideological barriers that situate the environment as our sanctified, unfunny, nonhuman Other, one whose moral, ethical, and aesthetic standards we fail to live up to (even as we threaten to destroy it)."—H-Net Reviews "Bad Environmentalism, besides reminding us to check our privilege and our blind spots, gives us permission to employ affective modes that we might, in these troubling times, be tempted to suppress. Perhaps it’s not wrong to laugh as well as cry, even as the Amazon burns. Perhaps we can allow ourselves to be irritated by the sanctimony of some environmentalist voices. "—Ecozon@ "Theoretical in nature, the book never overwhelms the reader with deep dives into critical theorists unfamiliar to historians. Instead, it is funny, enjoyable and a call for a new type of action. New Village Press Ecoart in Action: Activities, Case Studies, and

Book SynopsisReady-to-go, vetted approaches for facilitating artistic environmental projects How do we educate those who feel an urgency to address our environmental and social challenges? What ethical concerns do art-makers face who are committed to a deep green agenda? How can we refocus education to emphasize integrative thinking and inspire hope? What role might art play in actualizing environmental resilience? Compiled from 67 members of the Ecoart Network, a group of more than 200 internationally established practitioners, Ecoart in Action stands as a field guide that offers practical solutions to critical environmental challenges. Organized into three sections—Activities, Case Studies, and Provocations—each contribution provides models for ecoart practice that are adaptable for use within a variety of classrooms, communities, and contexts. Educators developing project and place-based learning curricula, citizens, policymakers, scientists, land managers, and those who work with communities (human and other) will find inspiration for integrating art, science, and community-engaged practices into on-the-ground environmental projects. If you share a concern for the environmental crisis and believe art can provide new options, this book is for you!Trade Review"Art is essential to our movements: environmentalists have always been good at appealing to the hemisphere of the human brain that values bar graphs and pie charts, but the message of our peril needs to get across in far more visceral ways as well. And here artists are as important as scientists, as this wonderfully comprehensive account makes clear." -- Bill McKibben, environmentalist and author of The End of Nature"Ecoart in Action is an extensive and invaluable field guide to the ways in which the arts can raise consciousness and instigate action on ecological issues. Transformative projects are carefully laid out by an amazing group of artists and writers whose dedication to the issues goes back decades. Packed with brilliant ideas for a vast number of contexts and participants, this book is crucial to our hopes for a sustainable future." -- Lucy R. Lippard, art critic and author of Undermining: A Wild Ride Through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West"Even as California combusts, Greenland’s vaulting ancient ice dome sweats, and seas swell, this Anthropocene period of Earth history, hubristically named by and for our species, is in its earliest formative stages. That’s both good and bad news. The bad news, of course, is that we haven’t seen anything yet. The good news is that humanity and the wider living world won’t see the worst outcomes if we all spread the activities, learn from the case studies and amplify the provocations offered in this vital field guide to ecoart in action." -- Andrew Revkin, journalist, educator, musician, and author of five environmental books, including The Burning Season and The North Pole Was Here

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art The Late Works of J. M. W. Turner: The Artist and

Book SynopsisAn exploration of Turner’s final, vital years, including new readings of some of his most significant paintings The paintings and drawings Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) produced from 1835 to his death are seen by many as his most audacious and compelling work, a highly personal final vision that ranks with the late styles of the greatest artists. In this study, Sam Smiles shows how a richer account of Turner’s achievement can be presented once his historical circumstances are given proper attention. He discusses the style and subject matter of Turner’s later oil paintings and watercolours, his commercial dealings and his relations with patrons; he examines the artist’s critical reception and scrutinises accounts of his physical and mental health to see what can be reliably said about this last phase of creative endeavour. Emerging from this study is an artist who used his final years to consolidate the principles that had motivated him throughout his career.Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British ArtTrade Review“[A] scholarly and impeccably detailed examination of Turner’s art and its critical reception . . . presenting a rich, absorbing account of his later career. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisArt after Liberalism is an account of creative practice at a moment of converging social crises. It is also an inquiry into emergent ways of living, acting, and making art in the company of others. The apparent failures of liberal thinking mark its starting point. No longer can the framework of the nation-state, the figure of the enterprising individual, and the premise of limitless development be counted on to produce a world worth living in. No longer can talk of inclusion, representation, or a neutral public sphere pass for something like equality. It is increasingly clear that these commonplace liberal conceptions have failed to improve life in any lasting way. In fact, they conceal fundamental connections to enslavement, conscription, colonization, moral debt, and ecological devastation. Now we must decide what comes after. The essays in this book attempt to register these connections by following itinerant artists, artworks, and art publics as they move across comparative political environments. Boulton.'One of the greatest essays ever written on art.'â The GuardianEdmund Burkeâs A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful is one of the most important works of aesthetics ever published. Whilst many writers have taken up their pen to write of the beautiful, Burkeâs subject here was the quality he uniquely distinguished as the sublimeâan all-consuming force beyond beauty that compelled terror as much as rapture in all who beheld it. It was an analysis that would go on to inspire some of the leading thinkers of the age, including Immanuel Kant and Denis Diderot. The Routledge Classics edition presents the authoritative text of the first critical edition of Burkeâs essay ever published, including a substantial critical and historical commentary.Edmund Burke (1729â1797). Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd Monet and London

Book SynopsisThis beautiful volume accompanies a major exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery that will reunite for the first time in 120 years an extraordinary group of Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings of London. The exhibition will realise the artist's unfulfilled ambition of showing the group on the banks of the Thames, just a stone's throw away from where many of them were created.Claude Monet (18401926) is world renowned as the leading figure of French Impressionism, the movement that changed the course of modern art. Less known is the fact that some of Monet's most remarkable Impressionist paintings were made not in France but in London. They depict extraordinary views of the Thames as it had never been seen before, full of evocative atmospheres, mysterious light and radiant colours. Begun over three stays in the capital between 1899 and 1901, the series depicting Charing Cross Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and the Houses of Parliament was unveiled at a landmark exhibition in Paris in 1904. Monet fervently wanted to show them in London the following year, 1905, but plans fell through. To this day, they have never been the subject of an exhibition in the UK.Monet and London: Views of the Thames will realise Monet's unfulfilled ambition of showing this extraordinary group of paintings in London, on the banks of the Thames and a mere 300 metres from the Savoy Hotel where most were painted. By presenting the paintings Monet himself selected for his public in Paris and London, it will provide visitors with the unique experience of seeing the show Monet curated and the works he felt best represented his ambitious artistic enterprise brought together for the first time over a century after their inaugural exhibition. The accompanying catalogue is richly illustrated and includes 21 entries and four original essays that shed new light on this famous series.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA must-have reference book for today's artists and art students. Every artist needs to learn and master the still life. Written by a well-known artist and expert instructor, The Art of Still Life offers a comprehensive, contemporary approach to the subject that instructs artists on the foundation basics and advanced techniques they need for successful drawing and painting. In addition to Casey's stunning paintings, the work of over fifty past and present masters is included, so that the book will do double duty as a hardworking how-to manual and a visual treasure trove of some of the finest still life art throughout history and being created today.Trade ReviewIt is rare for an art book to combine history, theory, and practice in one volume, but this book really delivers. Painting inanimate objects under controlled conditions has always served as a laboratory for artists to study the behavior of light and form. As a laboratory of learning for art students, still life setups are a regular part of atelier practice. Students arrange objects under fixed lights and capture as perfect an illusion as possible. After an introduction that tells his personal story, Casey shares his knowledge about oil painting in a series of clear-headed explanations, demonstrations, and exercises. The book covers materials for drawing and painting, principles of composition, light and shadow, drawing procedure, color theory, modeling of form, and paint technique. It ends with a practical step-by-step guide that walks you through all the decisions you'll need to make as you execute a painting from start to finish. The coverage would be helpful for any artist, beginner or advanced, and whether or not they specialize in still life. James Gurney, Gurney Journey When another still life book arrived, I was convinced it would be just another book to review, which is about the same as any other. But, once I dug in, I discovered it was anything but just another book. The Art of the Still Life, A Contemporary Guide to Classical Techniques, Composition, and Painting in Oil, by Todd Casey is an extraordinary painting technique book unlike any I've seen before. The coffee table book, 320 pages in all is filled with rich color reproductions of still life paintings through history, as well as paintings by contemporary still life artists. But the book is so much more. Not only does it outline technique, it provides technique on steroids, with amazing graphs, charts and illustrations which make things like lighting, light drop off, color, color temperature, form and so much more easy to grasp. Though I've been around the principles in my own life for the past couple of decades, I discovered concepts I never had seen or understood before. The book offers examples in lighting, examples of various forms of still life from common household objects, food, flowers, fish, game and birds, narrative themes, painting interiors, various backgrounds and more. Its chapters on light and another on composition are worth the price of the book alone, but there is so much more, with incredible information on color, on light planes and form, the science of painting and color, painting methods and more. And, the exercises and demonstrations are clear to understand and to follow. The price tag of $40 is a bargain, I'd pay $150 or $200 for the content in this book. It is one of the finest examples of a painting instruction book I've experienced in my collection of over 500 art books. - B. • Cambridge University Press The Economics of Cultural Policy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCultural policy is changing. Traditionally, cultural policies have been concerned with providing financial support for the arts, for cultural heritage and for institutions such as museums and galleries. In recent years, around the world, interest has grown in the creative industries as a source of innovation and economic dynamism. This book argues that an understanding of the nature of both the economic and the cultural value created by the cultural sector is essential to good policy-making. The book is the first comprehensive account of the application of economic theory and analysis to the broad field of cultural policy. It deals with general principles of policy-making in the cultural arena as seen from an economic point of view, and goes on to examine a range of specific cultural policy areas, including the arts, heritage, the cultural industries, urban development, tourism, education, trade, cultural diversity, economic development, intellectual property and cultural statistics.Trade Review'As is to be expected of this leading writer on the economics of the arts, this book is yet another valuable contribution. It covers areas not previously well trodden and covers a subject of vital importance for the flourishing of the arts. Well written, as pieces by Throsby always are, it will add to the enjoyment as well as knowledge and understanding of its readers.' William J. Baumol, Harold Price Professor of Entrepreneurship, New York University'David Throsby has again met the challenge of making cultural economics accessible to non-specialists while maintaining the interest of more specialised readers. His summaries of the various theories and their application to cultural policy could not be bettered and demonstrate his thorough understanding of both. I can recommend the book to everyone concerned with cultural economics and with cultural policy.' Ruth Towse, Professor of Economics of Creative Industries, Bournemouth University and Professor Emerita, Erasmus University Rotterdam'Drawing on the best traditions of classical political economy, Throsby shows how the processes of cultural policy-making can be illuminated by the application of economic theory. In its insistence on a distinction between economic and cultural value, the book offers little support to those who see culture as just another branch of economic activity. What Throsby gives us is a rigorously worked out framework for economic analysis, but one that remains receptive to other intellectual influences. Written with great lucidity, using language that non-economists will understand, this is essential reading for anyone engaged in the study or making of cultural policies.' Oliver Bennett, Professor of Cultural Policy Studies, University of Warwick, and Editor, International Journal of Cultural Policy'David Throsby promises to provide a comprehensive synopsis of all economic contributions to the analysis of cultural policy while extending the discussion beyond the usual questions, inviting non-economists and specialists alike to join the conversation … [He] identifies important aspects of cultural policy and argues that it can be enriched rather than debased by economic logic. He persuasively argues this by elaborating on various theories and their application to broader areas of cultural interest.'
