Book Synopsis*A Sunday Times Bestseller***INCLUDES AN EXTRA Q&A CHAPTER EXCLUSIVE TO THE PAPERBACK**For five generations, the Pemberton family have farmed at Birks Farm in the picturesque town of Lytham on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, working at the heart of the area since the 1830s and supplying dairy produce to the local community ever since. In 2016, Tom Pemberton uploaded a one-minute video to YouTube about how to use the farm shop's new raw milk vending machine. He thought a handful of people would watch it. It turns out many more did. And so he began uploading regular videos, every Tuesday, Friday and the occasional Sunday to show what he gets up to on the farm. Things don't always go to plan, especially when you're the farmer's son, but every day's a learning day and Tom approaches work as he does life in general: stay positive and don't take yourself too seriously. Make Hay While the Sun Shines takes us behind the farm gate and follows a year on the farm: from calving to maintaining machinery, from mucking out to planning and building a brand-new cow shed. Tom gives us a unique insight into everyday life on a busy dairy farm with all its highs, lows and hard graft. Full of heart, amusing anecdotes and unforgettable characters like Tom's dad, Andy - aka the Ginger Warrior - this is Tom's story of determination, adventure and how to keep a smile on your face even when you're knee-deep in cow poo.

Dalton Watson Fine Books Bugatti: The Italian Decade
Book SynopsisIn the late 1980s, the storied Italian automaker Bugatti positioned itself for a massive relaunch, defying widespread concerns and pinning its hopes on the innovative EB110 sports car. The EB110, which was eventually unveiled in 1991, was the fastest street-legal car of its time and was greeted with acclaim from industry insiders and trade journalists alike. Yet, soon thereafter, things started unraveling: faster cars came onto the market, sales collapsed, and eight years after its relaunch, Bugatti was bankrupt. This book details the car maker's unexpected revival, from the meteoric rise of the EB110 to its dramatic fall, as well as the tales of intrigue and shenanigans from the many prominent automotive personalities who worked behind the scenes. Though the Bugatti name lives on, still signaling the pinnacle in luxury sports car performance, this compelling and confounding automotive fiasco remains an unforgettable chapter in its one-hundred-plus years of existence.Trade Review"No one is more qualified to write the story of Bugatti’s Italian Decade than the irrepressible, prolific, and truly enjoyable Gautam Sen." * Veloce Today *"A very detailed account of a brave undertaking." * Motor Sport *"Sen sources first-hand voices and previously unseen photos to document an era of promising might-have-beens and dashed hopes." * Classic Cars *"This is a supremely thorough book that not only moves the goalposts farther forward but also proffers reasons for reevaluating certain aspects of the delivered canon." * Speedreaders *"A fascinating story that's well told, with illuminating insights from those right at the heart of the adventure." * Magneto *Table of ContentsPREFACE PROLOGUE - FROM MILAN TO MOLSHEIM I - THE BEGINNINGS OF A DREAM II - GETTING IT RIGHT III - DESIGNING THE DREAM IV - COMPLETING THE DESIGN V - UNVEILING OF THE DREAM VI - TESTING THE DREAM VII - MEETING THE PRESS VIII - THE BEST SUPERCAR IN THE WORLD IX - THE BEST YEARS YET X - BUGATTI AT LE MANS XI - THE BEGINNING OF THE END EPILOGUE - AFTER THE CLOSURE APPENDICES BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX

RIBA Publishing Urban Lighting for People: Evidence-Based
Book SynopsisLighting has the power to illuminate and enhance our experience within the built environment. The light that enables people to travel around their neighbourhood or their city; the light which they see themselves and their neighbourhood under. Research into the effects of urban lighting on behaviour, environmental psychology and social interaction is developing at a rapid rate. Yet, despite the affect it has on our daily lives, the practical application of this research is a relatively untapped resource. RIBA Publishing Revaluing Modern Architecture: Changing
Book SynopsisThe conservation of our Modern architectural heritage is a subject of vehement debate. When do buildings become old or significant enough to warrant special heritage status and protection? Should Modern listed buildings be treated differently from those of earlier periods? And what does all this mean for building users and owners, who might be better served if their buildings were less authentic, but more comfortable and usable? Presenting a clear line of sight through these complex questions, this book explores the conservation, regeneration and adaptive re-use of Modern architecture. It provides a general grounding in the field, its recent history and current development, including chapters on authenticity, charters, listing and protection. Case studies drawing on the author’s extensive practical experience offer valuable lessons learnt in the conservation of Modern heritage buildings. Looking beyond the specialist field of ‘elite’ heritage, Revaluing Modern Architecture also considers the changing culture of conservation for ‘sub-iconic’ buildings in relation to de-carbonisation and the climate emergency. It suggests how revaluing the vast legacy of modern architecture can help to promote a more sustainable future. Features leading conservation projects, such as the celebrated Penguin Pool at London Zoo, Finsbury Health Centre by Lubetkin & Tecton and Wells Coates’ Isokon (Lawn Road) Flats, as well as previously unpublished projects. Analyses key Modern conservation controversies of recent years Illustrated with over 160 photos and drawings. An essential primer for architectural students and practitioners, academics, those employed in conservation and planning, property owners, developers, surveyors and building managers. Oro Editions Designing the Computational Image, Imagining
Book SynopsisDuring the three decades following the Second World War, and before the advent of personal computers, government investment in university research in North America and the UK funded multidisciplinary projects to investigate the use of computers for manufacturing and design. Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design explores this period of remarkable inventiveness, and traces its repercussions on architecture and other creative fields through a selection of computational designers working today. Situating contemporary expressions of design in relation to broader historical, disciplinary, and technical frames, the book showcases the confluence, during the second half of the 20th century, of publicly funded technical innovations in software, geometry, and hardware with a cultural imaginary of design endowing computer-generated images with both geometric plasticity and a new type of agency as operative design artifacts.Table of ContentsMaterialities 16 Images to Think With Daniel Cardoso Llach 24 On the Surface Theodora Vardouli Archive 36 Servomechanisms Laboratory, MIT, United States 48 Cambridge CAD Group, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom 50 Sperry Gyroscope Co. of Canada Ltd., Canada Works 54 Ben Snell 56 BairBalliet (Kristy Balliet and Kelly Bair) 58 Joseph Choma 61 Vernelle Noel 64 Jonah Marrs 66 Nicolas Reeves 67 Jer Thorp and Diane Thorp Visualities 102 The Computer-Aided Design Project, MIT, United States 114 Cambridge CAD Group, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom 119 University of Utah, United States 120 Bell Labs, United States 126 McGill University, Canada 130 Computer Graphics Group, University of Toronto, Canada 142 Alan Warburton 143 Dana Cupkova 144 Andrew Heumann 146 Zach Lieberman 150 Carl Lostritto 151 Joseph Choma 152 Golan Levin 154 BairBalliet (Kristy Balliet and Kelly Bair) 156 Benedikt Groß 157 Kyuha Shim 158 Ben Snell 160 Shaheer Zazai 161 Jonah Marrs Agencies 240 The Computer-Aided Design Project, MIT, United States 250 The Architecture Machine, MIT, United States 254 Institute for Physical Planning, CMU, United States 260 Centre for Land Use and Built Form Studies, Cambridge University, United Kingdom 261 Centre for Configurational Studies, The Open University, United Kingdom 262 University of Waterloo, Canada 266 Civil Engineering Systems Laboratory, MIT, United States 268 University of Toronto, Canada 270 Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis, United States 272 Université de Montréal, Canada 273 Université Laval, Canada 274 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada journal, Canada 280 Madeline Gannon 281 George Stiny 282 Felecia Davis and Delia Dumitrescu 283 Dana Cupkova and Daragh Byrne 284 Jürg Lehni 286 Golan Levin 287 Elizabeth Vander Zaag 289 Daniel Iregui 292 Rafael Lozano-Hemmer 293 Jean Dubois 294 Joanna Berzowska 296 Philip Beesley Materialities Essays 70 Binary Image, Visual Latency Andrés Burbano 74 The Manufacturing Hand: Tactility and Abstraction in Robotics Emek Erdolu 78 Olympic Calculations Sean Keller 82 Processing Models, Modeling Processes for the HfG Ulm ca. 1952 Anna-Maria Meister Conversations 88 Unsmooth Images: A Conversation about the Materialities of Computational Design Kristy Balliet, Sean Keller, Nathalie Bredella, and Jonah Marrs moderated by Molly Wright Steenson 374 Biographies 380 Acknowledgments 382 Exhibition credits 383 Photo credits Visualities 164 Materialities of Shiny Surfacing with Chrome Akshita Sivakumar 170 “Digit Goes to Hawaii” (1976) and “Baby Eyes” (1984) Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda 176 Depth and Historical Vision in Computer Simulation Jacob Gaboury 180 Topology, Crystals, and A Multitude of Futures David Theodore 184 “Metamorphosis” (1976) by Lillian Schwartz Olga Touloumi 190 Interfaces of the Self: A Conversation about the Structures and Histories of ComputationalImages Joseph Choma, Carl Lostritto, Theodora Vardouli, and Jacob Gaboury moderated byOlga Touloumi 202 Imagination Machines: A Conversation with George Stiny Moderated by Daniel Cardoso Llach and Theodora Vardouli 218 Computer Art and Information Aesthetics: A Conversation with Leslie Mezei and Frieder Nake Moderated by Theodora Vardouli 300 Data for Decision (film, 1967) Moa Carlsson 304 Seeing with a Machine: Notes on Early SpatialComputing Ranjodh Singh Dhaliwal 308 Alternative Land-Use Map of a Simulated City Matthew Allen 312 @home Mario Carpo 318 Digital Pantheisms: A Conversation About Computational Agencies across Art and Design Madeline Gannon, Andrew Heumann, Dana Cupkova, and Golan Levin moderated by FeleciaDavis 332 Feminist Embodiments of Interactivity: A Conversation with Elizabeth Vander Zaag Moderated by Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda 350 Machine Misbehavior and Ethical Interfaces: A Conversation with Rachel Strickland and PaulPangaro Moderated by Daniel Cardoso Llach

Book SynopsisWhy, surrounded by screens and smart devices, we feel a deep connection to the analog—vinyl records, fountain pens, Kodak film, and other nondigital tools. We’re surrounded by screens; our music comes in the form of digital files; we tap words into a notes app. Why do we still crave the “realness” of analog, seeking out vinyl records, fountain pens, cameras with film? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Robert Hassan explores our deep connection to analog technology. Our analog urge, he explains, is about what we’ve lost from our technological past, something that’s not there in our digital present. We’re nostalgic for what we remember indistinctly as somehow more real, more human. Surveying some of the major developments of analog technology, Hassan shows us what’s been lost with the digital. Along the way, he discusses the appeal of the 2011 silent, black-and-white Oscar-winning film

Whittles Publishing A Natural History of Lighthouses
Book SynopsisThis is the story of lightkeepers’ contributions to the natural history of lighthouses in conjunction with the history and maintenance of the manned navigation beacons – their primary function of course – ‘for the safety of all’. Since keepers were first engaged to maintain lighthouses around our coast they have encountered wildlife, and in some cases developed a keen interest and expertise on the subject. Towards the end of the nineteenth century keepers were encouraged to submit annual returns of bird movements enabling reports on bird migration and several authoritative books to be compiled. As a result, ornithologists began to recognise how many lighthouses were well-placed to establish bird observatories – a few were in redundant lighthouses, often on offshore islands. However, lightkeepers also recognised that in certain weather conditions and during migration times, flocks of birds were attracted to the beam, resulting in many fatalities. While the problem is now better understood and considerably reduced, the automation of all British lighthouses has resulted in there no longer being lighthouse keepers to monitor the situation and report bird, sea mammal, insect and bat movements. The Natural History of Lighthouses highlights the contribution made by lighthouse keepers over the last century or two to the study of natural history, and ornithology in particular. Much of this is discussed in the words of the keepers themselves, set in the context of lighthouse history. Scotland has an especially rich lighthouse tradition, mainly due to a dynasty of Stevenson engineers covering over a century, all of whom also had a profound understanding of weather and geology – and indeed natural history – so important in the placing of their lighthouses. Several redundant lighthouse buildings still function as bird observatories as well as wildlife viewpoints and study centres, museums, hotels, restaurants and private homes. The lanterns themselves are still maintained in this digital and satellite age, monitored remotely from a strategic control centre.Trade Review'...a collection of great stories about the life of the keepers, as well as references to the work of lightships and their crew. ...there are plenty of marvellous stories here. This well-produced book also contains some terrific photography.' Nautilus Telgraph

Birlinn General The Making of the Crofting Community
Book SynopsisThis book has been seminal in bringing to the fore the injustices that have been inflicted on the Highlands in the name of government and landlord – injustices often lost in the name of dry statistics and academic balance. Written by a man who has gone on to become both an award-winning historian of the Highlands and a leading figure in the public life of the region, The Making of the Crofting Community has attracted praise, inspired debate, and provoked outrage and controversy over the years. This book remains necessary to challenge standard academic interpretations of the Highland past. Having long been one of the classics of Birlinn’s John Donald list, this revised and updated new edition includes a substantial new preface and an extensive reworking of the existing text.

Vertebrate Publishing Ltd The Land That Made Us: The Peak District farmer’s
Book SynopsisThe South West Peak is a lesser-known part of the Peak District stretching from Lyme Park in Cheshire in the north to Onecote in Staffordshire in the south, and from Macclesfield in the west to Buxton in the east. This landscape area includes tracts of high moorland, fertile valleys, wooded cloughs, picturesque villages and tiny hamlets. The farmers of the South West Peak are the people who have made the landscape what it is today, and it is their personal accounts of working in this often challenging land that form the basis of The Land That Made Us. Edited by local author Christine Gregory and dairy farmer Sheila Hine, and published in partnership with the Farming Life Centre and the Peak District National Park Authority with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this book includes the testimony of over twenty farmers, and it is illustrated with photographs of them and their farming landscapes. We hear stories from across the generations of heroic endeavour in difficult terrain, as well as accounts of day-to-day work and family life spanning eighty years of farming history. The land had been farmed in traditional ways for centuries, but the Second World War changed that, and in succeeding years politics and increasing mechanisation have constantly rewritten the rule book for farmers. There is pride in achievement as well as frustration at the often conflicting demands of food production and wildlife conservation. The Land That Made Us asks what makes for sustainability in the short and the long term. The future of this landscape and of the farming communities that sustain it hangs in the balance, and it is the farmers’ turn to reflect on their past and speculate about the future.Trade Review'[An] excellent history of modern farming – the best I have come across precisely because the words are those of the farmers themselves and their families, who have lived through and are still living through its transformation.'from the Foreword by Colin Tudge, co-founder of the Oxford Real Farming Conference and the College for Real Farming and Food CultureTable of ContentsForewordIntroductionPart 1: From Horses to Tractors – 1940s to 1950s- Working with horses; the war years; government involvement in farming; children on the farm; the first tractors and milking machines; power and water come to the hills; the snows of ’47Part 2: Last of the Old Days and Ways – 1960s to 1970s- A shepherd’s life; the value of wool; farming subsidies; sheep dipping; local sheep sales; family life on a remote hill farmPart 3: From Buckets to Bulk Tanks – 1970s to 1980s- Making hay; silage rye-grass monoculture; ‘improving’ the land; the decline of mixed farming; self-sufficient farms; old milking systems give way to the new; new breeds; joining the Common Market; subsidies and surpluses; milk quotas; changing the landscape; the Harpur Crewe EstatePart 4: Winners and Losers – 1990s to 2018- BSE, foot-and-mouth disease and TB; the price of milk; wildlife losses; farming for conservation; waders in the South West PeakPart 5: The Future for Farming in the South West Peak- New directions in agricultural policy; farming organically; diversifying; finding a niche, ‘hobby farmers’; keeping it in the family; the futureAcknowledgements
