McGraw-Hill Education ISE System Dynamics
Book SynopsisThe subject of system dynamics deals with mathematical modeling and analysis of devices and processes for the purpose of understanding their time-dependent behavior. It emphasizes applications containing multiple types of components and processes such as electromechanical devices, electrohydraulic devices, and fluid-thermal processes. Because systems of interconnected elements often require a control system to work properly, control system design is a major application area in system dynamics. System Dynamics covers these topics, has application case studies, more homework problems than other texts, and the strongest treatment of computational software and system simulation, with its early introduction of MATLAB and Simulink.Table of Contents1) Introduction2) Dynamic Response Methods3) Modeling of Rigid-Body Mechanical Systems4) Spring and Damper Elements in Mechanical Systems5) Block Diagrams, State-Variable Models, and Simulation Methods6) Electrical and Electromechanical Systems7) Fluid and Thermal Systems8) System Analysis in the Time Domain9) System Analysis in the Frequency Domain10) Introduction to Feedback Control Systems11) Control System Design and the Root Locus Plot12) Compensator Design13) Vibration Applications (On Website)AppendicesA) Guide to Selected MATLAB Commands and FunctionsB) Fourier SeriesC) Developing Models from DataD) Introduction to MATLAB (On Website)E) Numerical Methods (On Website)

Pen & Sword Books Ltd A Short History of Britains Fisheries
Book SynopsisWherever you fit into the debate about food - vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, or carnivore - you cannot argue against the fact that fish have influenced our diet for millennia, and, for many, continue to do so today. We are, after all, an island nation surrounded by seas that were once extremely rich and diverse in its variety of both fish and shellfish, and it's well known that early man was as much a hunter-gatherer on water as on land for fish are a great supplier of protein. Yet only in the last couple of centuries has fishing become an established occupation, and the last forty years has seen a multitude of change in what is now an industry.Outside the industry, little has been written about how this seafood is caught, landed and then reaches us, the consumer. We all know about fish and chip shops, but do we know the difference between a beam and otter trawl? What is the difference between a lobster pot and a lobster creel? Did you know oysters and salmon were once ca

New York University Press The Television Will Be Revolutionized Second
Book SynopsisGo behind the TV screen to explore what is changing, why it is changing, and why the changes mattersMany proclaimed the end of television in the early years of the twenty-first century, as capabilities and features of the boxes that occupied a central space in American living rooms for the preceding fifty years were radically remade. In this revised, second edition of her definitive book, Amanda D. Lotz proves that rumors of the death of television were greatly exaggerated and explores how new distribution and viewing technologies have resurrected the medium. Shifts in the basic practices of making and distributing television have not been hastening its demise, but are redefining what we can do with television, what we expect from it, how we use itin short, revolutionizing it.Television, as both a technology and a tool for cultural storytelling, remains as important today as ever, but it has changed in fundamental ways. The Television Will Be Revolutionized providTrade Review"In thissecond edition, Lotz not only updates us on developments over the past seven years; she digs deeper and thinks harder about the revolutionary changes taking place in the television today. An outstanding contribution to television studies and an invaluable guide for students, scholars, and professionals." -- Michael Curtin,co-director, Media Industries Project"Television is anything but dead, but we are now fully into the post-network era that Amanda D. Crecy Publishing British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power:
Book SynopsisA popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our fascimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The next reissue in the series - British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power: Combined Volume 1967. Two years before in 1965, there had been 3,000 steam locos on BR''s books. But such was the remorseless march of diesel and electric traction, by the end of 1967, this had shrunk to a mere 361; 307 of LMS origin, 2 ex LNER locos and only 52 out of the 999 BR Standard locos built. This is also the first of our abc reprints which uses the term ''British Rail'' in its title, that having been introduced in 1965. The focus of the 1967 abc Combined is therefore firmly on diesel and electric motive power with new locos being added all the time and almost all of the early Modernisation Plan types still in service. For generations of enthusiasts, these were the locos they grew up with and spotted so this volume will be one many can relate to more strongly than the rapidly fading age of steam.

Crecy Publishing Enginemen Elite
Book SynopsisOver the course of the age of steam on Britain''s railways, relatively few engine men picked up the pen to write about their life on the footplate and the engines on which they worked. One who did was Norman McKillop, who also wrote under the pseudonym of ''Toram Beg'' (''little Norman''), a nod towards his Gaelic parentage and heritage, whilst still working as an engine driver, contributing to publications such as Trains Illustrated. Enginemen Elite was first published in 1958 and is an account of Mc Killop''s railway career which began in 1910 when he joined the North British Railway as a cleaner. He rose through the ranks and in time, based at Haymarket shed in Edinburgh, he became one of the top link drivers on the East Coast Main Line. He has been described, as at once a master and a lover of the locomotiveman''s craft and his observations relating to the various types of engines on which he worked are both fascinating and insightful. He was also an active trade unionist who wrote a history of his union, ASLEF, which was published in 1950 and there is a strong tread of social concern running through his autobiography focusing on the sometimes appalling working conditions of railway staff especially in the dark economic landscape of the 1930s. This reissue of a superbly written work on life on the footplate which has been out of print for many years, one both romantic and thoughtful in turn, will be much welcomed by a new generation of readers.

The result is a book of major importance that challenges one of the orthodoxies of our day and provides a benchmark for future debate.Trade Review'In the golden days of the Washington consensus, privatization was viewed as one of the central pillars of successful development. Ideology and interests triumphed over economic theory and experience, both of which noted the difficulties posed by privatization and its limitations. Through a series of case studies, Weizsäcker and his colleagues illustrate the limits to privatization' JOSEPH E. STIGLITZ, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics and former chief economist and senior vice-president of the World Bank 'Detailed case analysis is the only way to ensure that we learn how to get privatization policies right. This book with a sound ethical foundation is an invaluable resource for policy-makers, trade unions, the business community and all who are interested in what should be publicly or privately owned' JUAN SOMAVIA, Director-General, ILO 'This timely new book is an important contribution as we explore the crisis in good jobs for working people the world over' JOHN SWEENEY, President for Public Affairs, AFL-CIO 'Indigenous peoples are among those caught in the cracks between public and private ownership. Territories and resources which we traditionally own have been systematically and immorally appropriated both by states or the private sector. This book presents solutions for balanced approaches to regulate privatization which otherwise threatens to endanger our continuing existence' VICTORIA TAULI CORPUZ, Executive Director, Tebtebba (Indigenous Peoples' International Centre for Policy Research and Education), PhilippinesTable of ContentsPART I INTRODUCTION * Limits to Privatization * PART II PRIVATIZATION IN MANY SECTORS: CASE STUDIES AND SNAPSHOTS * Initial remarks * NATURAL RESOURCES AND RELATED INDUSTRIES * Water * Metals and Cement * Other Resources * NETWORK INDUSTRIES * Energy * Telecommunication and Postal Services * Transportation * OTHER SERVICES * Waste Disposal * Insurance * Culture and Media * Health * Education * Pensions * Police and Security * PART III PRIVATIZATION IN CONTEXT * Initial remarks * The General Context * The Regional Context * Special Issues * PART IV GOVERNANCE OF PRIVATIZATION * Initial remarks * Regulation * Privatization and Municipal Democracy * Financing Global Public Goods: Challenges * Escaping Pernicious Dualism: Civil Society between the State and the Firm * Private Governance: Private Rules for Privatization? * 'Co-evolution' between State Regulation and the Private Sector * PART V CONCLUSION * Lessons Learned from Privatization *

Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd Mediterranean Weather Handbook for Sailors
Book Synopsis'Mediterranean Weather Handbook for Sailors' is an indispensable reference providing a general understanding of the various phenomena concurring to determine weather in the Mediterranean as well as useful forecasting aids. It is written for sailors, not meteorologists; theory is kept to a minimum, while every effort is made to provide clear interpretative tools that are helpful in understanding actual weather and forecasting. Roberto Ritossa is a meteorology expert and this handbook is a result of many years research on Mediterranean weather patterns. This second edition includes details of new and changed websites that offer meteorological services. Throughout the graphics have been improved and for some sections additional illustrations have been added. "Roberto Ritossa has produced an excellent weather text book for those who choose to sail in the Mediterranean. Although it claims to be 'written for sailors, not meteorologists' there is more than enough essential theory to satisfy the keenest of amateur meteorologists. I would certainly buy a copy if I were to ever plan to return to the Mediterranean, as a sailor." - IG, Cruising.
