Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG The Finite Element Method: Theory,
Book SynopsisThis book gives an introduction to the finite element method as a general computational method for solving partial differential equations approximately. Our approach is mathematical in nature with a strong focus on the underlying mathematical principles, such as approximation properties of piecewise polynomial spaces, and variational formulations of partial differential equations, but with a minimum level of advanced mathematical machinery from functional analysis and partial differential equations. In principle, the material should be accessible to students with only knowledge of calculus of several variables, basic partial differential equations, and linear algebra, as the necessary concepts from more advanced analysis are introduced when needed. Throughout the text we emphasize implementation of the involved algorithms, and have therefore mixed mathematical theory with concrete computer code using the numerical software MATLAB is and its PDE-Toolbox. We have also had the ambition to cover some of the most important applications of finite elements and the basic finite element methods developed for those applications, including diffusion and transport phenomena, solid and fluid mechanics, and also electromagnetics. Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The authors give an introduction to the finite element method as a general computational method for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) approximately. … The book should be accessible to students with only knowledge of calculus of several variables, basic partial differential equations, and linear algebra, as the necessary concepts from more advanced analysis are introduced when needed.” (Răzvan Răducanu, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1263, 2013)Table of Contents1. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Effects of Thermal Stimulation during Passive Driver Fatigue
Book SynopsisElisabeth Schmidt investigates the effect of thermal stimulation during passive driver fatigue in a series of driving simulator experiments. Thermal stimulation of the upper body resulted in significantly decreased subjective fatigue ratings as well as an increase in pupil diameter and skin conductance. The effects of different stimulus temperatures, durations, lower leg cooling and repetitive cooling were also examined. The studies show that thermal stimulation of the upper body causes physiological and subjective effects, which can be associated with a short-term sympathetic activation, whereas lower leg cooling does not cause physiological activation.Table of ContentsFatigue Induction in Simulated Driving.- Effect of Thermal Stimuli on Passive Fatigue.- Detection of Fatigue based on Physiological Measurements.- Driver Vitalization through Fatigue-Based Climate Control.

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Algorithm-Driven Truss Topology Optimization for Additive Manufacturing
Book SynopsisSince Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques allow the manufacture of complex-shaped structures the combination of lightweight construction, topology optimization, and AM is of significant interest. Besides the established continuum topology optimization methods, less attention is paid to algorithm-driven optimization based on linear optimization, which can also be used for topology optimization of truss-like structures. To overcome this shortcoming, we combined linear optimization, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), numerical shape optimization, and numerical simulation into an algorithm-driven product design process for additively manufactured truss-like structures. With our Ansys SpaceClaim add-in construcTOR, which is capable of obtaining ready-for-machine-interpretation CAD data of truss-like structures out of raw mathematical optimization data, the high performance of (heuristic-based) optimization algorithms implemented in linear programming software is now available to the CAD community.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Physical and Technical Background.- Optimization of Truss Structures.- Bridging Algorithm-Driven Truss Optimization and Additive Manufacturing.- Mixed-Integer Linear Programming for Truss Optimization.- CAD-Based Mathematical Optimization.- Computational Study.- Conclusion and Outlook.

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Machine Learning under Malware Attack
Book SynopsisMachine learning has become key in supporting decision-making processes across a wide array of applications, ranging from autonomous vehicles to malware detection. However, while highly accurate, these algorithms have been shown to exhibit vulnerabilities, in which they could be deceived to return preferred predictions. Therefore, carefully crafted adversarial objects may impact the trust of machine learning systems compromising the reliability of their predictions, irrespective of the field in which they are deployed. The goal of this book is to improve the understanding of adversarial attacks, particularly in the malware context, and leverage the knowledge to explore defenses against adaptive adversaries. Furthermore, to study systemic weaknesses that can improve the resilience of machine learning models. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Making Presentation Math Computable: A Context-Sensitive Approach for Translating LaTeX to Computer Algebra Systems
Book SynopsisThis Open-Access-book addresses the issue of translating mathematical expressions from LaTeX to the syntax of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS). Over the past decades, especially in the domain of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), LaTeX has become the de-facto standard to typeset mathematical formulae in publications. Since scientists are generally required to publish their work, LaTeX has become an integral part of today's publishing workflow. On the other hand, modern research increasingly relies on CAS to simplify, manipulate, compute, and visualize mathematics. However, existing LaTeX import functions in CAS are limited to simple arithmetic expressions and are, therefore, insufficient for most use cases. Consequently, the workflow of experimenting and publishing in the Sciences often includes time-consuming and error-prone manual conversions between presentational LaTeX and computational CAS formats. To address the lack of a reliable and comprehensive translation tool between LaTeX and CAS, this thesis makes the following three contributions. First, it provides an approach to semantically enhance LaTeX expressions with sufficient semantic information for translations into CAS syntaxes. Second, it demonstrates the first context-aware LaTeX to CAS translation framework LaCASt. Third, the thesis provides a novel approach to evaluate the performance for LaTeX to CAS translations on large-scaled datasets with an automatic verification of equations in digital mathematical libraries. This is an open access book.Table of Contents1. Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG The Welfare of Performing Animals: A Historical
Book SynopsisThis timely book describes and analyses a neglected area of the history of concern for animal welfare, discussing the ends and means of the capture, transport, housing and training of performing animals, as well as the role of pressure groups, politics, the press and vested interests. It examines primary source material of considerable interdisciplinary interest, and addresses the influence of scientific and veterinary opinion and the effectiveness of proposals for supervisory legislation, noting the current international status and characteristics of present-day practice within the commercial sector.Animal performance has a long history, and at the beginning of the twentieth century this aspect of popular entertainment became the subject not just of a major public controversy but also of prolonged British parliamentary attention to animal welfare.Following an assessment of the use of trained animals in the more distant historical past, the book charts the emergence of criticism and analyses the arguments and evidence used by the opponents and proponents in Britain from the early twentieth century to the present, noting comparable events in the United States and elsewhere.Trade Review“This book makes a valuable contribution to animal studies. It investigates the social and political processes concerned with the welfare of performing animals in Britain from the nineteenth century into the twentieth century. … Drawing on highly detailed research, this book provides a comprehensive account of the individuals and organisations that campaigned against animal performance and its cruelties and, in turn, those who campaigned for its continuation.” (Peta Tait, Animal Studies Journal, Vol. 5 (1), 2016)“A comprehensive history of human attitudes and actions in relation to the welfare of performing animals from Roman times to the present day. As such, it reveals a great deal about human behavior; attitudes that evolve, attitudes that never change and the motivations that lie behind what we say, write and do. … It has been meticulously researched and it is very well written. It is also thought-provoking.” (John Webster, Animal Welfare, Vol. 24 (3), August, 2015)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- The Legacy of Animal Performance.- Open Debate in the British Parliament and Beyond.- Means and Ends.- Unfinished Business.- Agitation After the Act.- Conclusion.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Geothermal Energy: From Theoretical Models to Exploration and Development
Book SynopsisThe internal heat of the planet Earth represents an inexhaustible reservoir of thermal energy. This form of energy, known as geothermal energy has been utilized throughout human history in the form of hot water from hot springs. Modern utilization of geothermal energy includes direct use of the heat and its conversion to other forms of energy, mainly electricity. Geothermal energy is a form of renewable energy and its use is associated with very little or no CO2-emissions and its importance as an energy source has greatly increased as the effects of climate change become more prominent. Because of its inexhaustibility it is obvious that utilization of geothermal energy will become a cornerstone of future energy supplies. The exploration of geothermal resources has become an important topic of study as geology and earth science students prepare to meet the demands of a rapidly growing industry, which involves an increasing number professionals and public institutions participating in geothermal energy related projects. This book meets the demands of both groups of readers, students and professionals. Geothermal Energy and its utilization is systematically presented and contains the necessary technical information needed for developing and understanding geothermal energy projects. It presents basic knowledge on the Earth’s thermal regime and its geothermal energy resources, the types of geothermal energy used as well as its future potential and the perspectives of the industry. Specific chapters of the book deal with borehole heat exchangers and with the direct use of groundwater and thermal water in hydrogeothermal systems. A central topic are Enhanced Geothermal Systems (hot-dry-rock systems), a key technology for energy supply in the near future. Pre-drilling site investigations, drilling technology, well logging and hydraulic test programs are important subjects related to the exploration phase of developing Geothermal Energy sites. The chemical composition of the natural waters used as a heat transport medium in geothermal systems can be used as an exploration tool, but chemistry is also important during operation of a geothermal power plant because of potential scale formation and corrosion of pipes and installations, which needs to be prevented. Graduate students and professionals will find in depth information on Geothermal Energy, its exploration and utilization.Trade ReviewBook: Petrogenesis of metamorphic rocks (Bucher & Frey) Springer-Verlag 2002 Customer reviews on Amazon.com one of the best textbooks available, 10. April 2000 Von Katharina Dubach Petrogenesis of metamorphic rocks is probable the best textbook available for students of metamorphic petrology. In a short, concise form it introduces the reader to the principles of metamorphic petrology as well as to the evolution of different rock types under changing metamorphic conditions. Excellent source for anyone studying metamorphic rocks., 2. Juni 1999 Von Ein Kunde This book is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the basic princiles of metamorphism, including composition of source rocks, types, processes and condidtions of metamorphism. A very detailed description on the construction of metamorphic projections is also included. Part two covers the metamorphism of different rock compositions including ultramafic, mafic, carbonate, pelitic, and granitoid rocks. This section is very detailed, without bogging down with specific examples of metamorphism.Table of Contents1.
