Springer International Publishing AG Art-Based Social Enterprise, Young Creatives and
Book SynopsisThis book analyses the challenges and opportunities faced by art-based social enterprises (ASEs) engaging young creatives in education and training and supporting their pathways to the creative industries. In doing so, it addresses the complex intersecting issues of marginality and entrepreneurship, particularly in relation to young creatives from socially, economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with twelve key organisations, and three in-depth case studies in Australia, the book offers a detailed analysis of using enterprise to engage with the structural challenges of marginality. The book explores the local and global contexts through which art-based social enterprises (ASEs) operate and within which they attempt – often successfully – to improve access to education and work for emerging creatives. It also attends to the findings generated through engaging with the lived experiences of the staff and young creatives involved in our ASE case studies, in order to understand both the challenges and impacts of the ASE model on young people’s education, training, and employment pathways. The book focuses on three broad themes; precarious youth and digital futures, material practice and sustainable economies, and cultural citizenship in the urban fringe. In exploring these themes, the book contributes to debates about the limits, possibilities and challenges that attach to, and emerge from, an ASE model and highlights the ways in which these models can contribute to young people’s well-being, engagement, education and training, and work pathways. More broadly, it examines the possibilities of art as a means of social and cultural engagement. In the context of the precarious future of the creative industries, this book emphasise the ways in which young artists are building alternative economic and cultural models that support both individual pathways and collective change. This book will move the field forward with a critical lens that engages closely with experience and the lived realities of juggling multiple priorities of social, economic and artistic goals.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: Artistic practice and social outcomes in a market-driven landscape.- Chapter 2: Precarious youth and digital futures.- Chapter 3: The Youthworx model: Disengaged young people and creative digital training.- Chapter 4: Fashioning a future: Material practice, creativity and sustainable economies.- Chapter 5: The Social Studio: Hope and pragmatic ambition.- Chapter 6: Creative practice, cultural citizenship and the urban fringe.- Chapter 7: Outer Urban Projects: Community building versus mainstreaming.- Chapter 8: Conclusion.

Springer International Publishing AG IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education
Book SynopsisThis open access publication outlines the underlying framework for gathering data on civic knowledge, attitudes, and engagement as well as contextual information, and it describes the assessment design for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s (IEA) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2022.The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) investigates how young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. ICCS 2022 is a continuation of two earlier IEA studies, ICCS 2009 and ICCS 2016, and, for the first time, this survey includes the option of a computer-based assessment. Responding to enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change, the study addresses issues related to young people’s engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Over the past 50 years, IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, IEA conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second one in 1999, third in 2009 and fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data will allow education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, both internationally, and in a regional context, and to measure progress in achieving critical components of their educational policy agendas.Table of ContentsOverview.- Civic knowledge framework.- Civic attitudes and engagement framework.- Contextual framework.- Assessment design.- References.- Appendices.

Springer International Publishing AG The New Science of Medicine & Management: A
Book SynopsisThis exciting, first-of-its-kind title describes the blossoming new science of medicine and management—the concepts, methodologies, techniques, and tools that create value for patients, populations, caregivers, staff, and healthcare organizations. Developed out of the innovative and powerful physician executive MBA program at the Heller School of Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, The New Science of Medicine & Management describes what physician leaders need to know and do to fix problems that can erode value in complex healthcare environments in which they practice medicine. The book is motivated by a singular proposition—Every Physician a Leader; Every Leader a Collaborative Team Player and a new definition of high-value health care. Composed of the best 18 of approximately 200 outstanding physician-led business school projects, the book is based on the collective efforts and experiences of 33 authors and coauthors, 28 of whom are physicians and 19 of whom have an MD and an MBA degree. The work is grounded in three important assertions: First, the clinical side of complex professional medical organizations such as hospitals has traditionally been led by highly skilled, highly experienced medical practitioners trained in the underlying biomedical disciplines and applied medical sciences. Second, there is research evidence that managers with clinical backgrounds can run better healthcare organizations, and a growing number of physician-led multispecialty groups are outperforming organizations run by lay managers. Third, physicians and other caregivers should have some training in the new science of medicine and management; moreover, and very importantly, the transition from clinician to clinical manager and leader is challenging and requires training in the new science of medicine and management. State of the art, developed by expert physician leaders in the field, and replete with a wide range of management insights and lessons, this book asks important questions and offers an exciting and comprehensive resource for all physicians, health administrators, and clinicians interested in not only the science of medicine and management and in developing physician-led teams but, crucially, in ensuring value in healthcare by improving patient outcomes, safety, affordability, and employee well-being.Table of Contents Improving access to and quality of palliative & hospice care via provider and patient education Operating Room rapid response Innovation team impacting measurable efficiencies Improved transplantation operational performance through a transplant specific database integration with the hospital electronic medical record. Birkhauser Inhabited Machines: Genealogy of an Architectural
Book SynopsisAround 1800, one of the most influential architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged—that of built spaces as technical devices. Climate, morality, and comfort are the three main themes of this study, and each is vividly examined in separate chapters through synchronous comparison and with the help of examples. The emergence of corresponding metaphors, knowledge, and construction forms is traced over a period of about 70 years. The author focuses particularly on the operative dimension of architecture. Thus, the book provides a historical perspective on a key topic for the future of architecture. The book is aimed at readers interested in architecture, technology or the cultural history of building and living. The Exploring Architecture series makes architectural scholarship accessible, introduces the latest research methods, and covers a wide range of periods, regions, and topics.

Diaphanes AG How to Teach Art?
Book SynopsisA cooperative reflection on how to teach art. How should art be taught? What kind of knowledge should artists absorb? How might an ordinary person become a creature addicted to the creative process? In other words, how can a non-artist become an artist? Such programmatic questions articulated by acclaimed Polish artist Artur Żmijewski were at the heart of the workshop “How to Teach Art?” Żmijewski invited a group of graduate and doctoral students from three Zurich universities—the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Zurich, and the Zurich University of the Arts—to collectively reflect on their artistic practices. Over the course of four months, the group met several times a week for hourlong sessions, following individual and collective exercises induced by Żmijewski himself. This book retraces the workshop and its process by showing inconclusive, fragmentary results between theory and practice. How to Teach Art? presents drawings, videos, photographs, 16mm films, and accompanying reflections on the central premise, “How to teach art?”

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden “Intention is not method, belief is not evidence”: Civic Education and Prevention with Former Right-Wing Extremists in German Schools
Book SynopsisFor over 20 years, school interventions involving former right-wing extremists have been popular in Germany. In practice, they are advertised and conducted as both civic education and extremism prevention. This book uses an evidence-based and interdisciplinary approach to examine the potentials and challenges of this format. It provides a thematic embedding of German application, a comprehensive review of attributed impact assumptions and the state of related research. Furthermore, this research offers highly valuable, unique and comprehensive insights based on empirical evidence. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the format and its complexity. Overall, the findings give no clear indication that the involvement of former right-wing extremists in schools initiate civic education processes or prevent political extremism. Rather, the investigation found fundamental needs for additional research, modification, and sensitization. In this vein, this book makes a pioneer contribution to quality assurance and evaluation research in civic education and extremism prevention.Table of ContentsStructure of the book.- Synopsis.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Artists in the University: Positioning Artistic Research in Higher Education
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the relationship between the university and a particular cohort of academic staff: those in visual and performing arts disciplines who joined the university sector in the 1990s. It explores how artistic researchers have been accommodated in the Australian university management framework and the impact that this has had on their careers, identities, approaches to their practice and the final works that they produce. The book provides the first analysis of this topic across the artistic disciplinary domain in Australia and updates the findings of Australia’s only comprehensive study of the position of research in the creative arts within the government funding policy setting reported in 1998 (The Strand Report).Using lived examples and a forensic approach to the research policy challenges, it shows that while limited progress has been made in the acceptance of artistic research as legitimate research, significant structural, cultural and practical challenges continue to undermine relationships between universities and their artistic staff and affect the nature and quality of artistic work.Table of ContentsForeword.- Artists in the University: An introduction.- Worlds colliding - the ongoing influence of amalgamation.- The University as a Site for Artistic Practice .- Is Artistic Practice Research?.- Artistic Research Within National Research Policy.- Artistic Research and university research management practices.- Institutional research management from the inside.- Beyond Equivalency: Repositioning Artistic Research Within higher education.- Appendix.

Hence, while other IELTS books teach strategies with long wordy explanations that hardly make sense to the average student, Top the IELTS focuses on teaching students in the most intuitive way possible: examples. Each unit is systematically broken down to make it simple for any student to Top the IELTS. First, 'Simple Steps' are condensed at the outset for easy reference. Next begins 'Elaboration with Examples' — a section where the 'Simple Steps' are put into practice. As an added bonus, actual student work is included in the elaboration section to reveal the common mistakes made by IELTS-takers. The unit concludes with the 'IELTS Trainer' which allows students a chance to directly put the strategies to practice rather than just throwing students into the deep end by providing a full set of IELTS practice tests.

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn this genre-bending work of art, words and images morph in ways that free the reader's imagination to think and write differently. Mona Oraby, Emilie Flamme, and their ghostwriters create the kind of visionary experimentation and innovation that are sorely lacking, but very much needed both within and beyond the academy today. -- Mark C. Taylor, Columbia UniversityOraby and Flamme invite readers into an impressive, courageous, and innovative experiment in communicative arts, an interpretive work of political action, a wager at broader engagement for important ideas raised in expertly curated words and equally scintillating images. New Village Press Ecoart in Action: Activities, Case Studies, and
Book SynopsisReady-to-go, vetted approaches for facilitating artistic environmental projects How do we educate those who feel an urgency to address our environmental and social challenges? What ethical concerns do art-makers face who are committed to a deep green agenda? How can we refocus education to emphasize integrative thinking and inspire hope? What role might art play in actualizing environmental resilience? Compiled from 67 members of the Ecoart Network, a group of more than 200 internationally established practitioners, Ecoart in Action stands as a field guide that offers practical solutions to critical environmental challenges. Organized into three sections—Activities, Case Studies, and Provocations—each contribution provides models for ecoart practice that are adaptable for use within a variety of classrooms, communities, and contexts. Educators developing project and place-based learning curricula, citizens, policymakers, scientists, land managers, and those who work with communities (human and other) will find inspiration for integrating art, science, and community-engaged practices into on-the-ground environmental projects. If you share a concern for the environmental crisis and believe art can provide new options, this book is for you!Trade Review"Art is essential to our movements: environmentalists have always been good at appealing to the hemisphere of the human brain that values bar graphs and pie charts, but the message of our peril needs to get across in far more visceral ways as well. And here artists are as important as scientists, as this wonderfully comprehensive account makes clear." -- Bill McKibben, environmentalist and author of The End of Nature"Ecoart in Action is an extensive and invaluable field guide to the ways in which the arts can raise consciousness and instigate action on ecological issues. Transformative projects are carefully laid out by an amazing group of artists and writers whose dedication to the issues goes back decades. Packed with brilliant ideas for a vast number of contexts and participants, this book is crucial to our hopes for a sustainable future." -- Lucy R. Lippard, art critic and author of Undermining: A Wild Ride Through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West"Even as California combusts, Greenland’s vaulting ancient ice dome sweats, and seas swell, this Anthropocene period of Earth history, hubristically named by and for our species, is in its earliest formative stages. That’s both good and bad news. The bad news, of course, is that we haven’t seen anything yet. The good news is that humanity and the wider living world won’t see the worst outcomes if we all spread the activities, learn from the case studies and amplify the provocations offered in this vital field guide to ecoart in action." -- Andrew Revkin, journalist, educator, musician, and author of five environmental books, including The Burning Season and The North Pole Was Here

Information Age Publishing Improving Instruction Through Supervision, Evaluation, and Professional Development
Book SynopsisIn this second edition of Improving Instruction Through Supervision, Evaluation, and Professional Development we’ve maintained the conceptual framework while updating sections to provide the most recent research on instructional strategies that have the most promise of helping all students learn. Modifications of the law resulting from the reauthorization of the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act—Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (2015)—and their implication for practice are embedded throughout this new edition. Updated data collection tools for classroom observations are also provided. We included a link to a website that contains all the observation tools in electronic format so that observers can have the opportunity to collect data on a tablet or laptop, save the observation data as a PDF file and e-mail those data to the teacher observed. This new edition recognizes the reality that all principals are responsible for supervision, evaluation, and professional development of their teachers—tasks that are neither simple nor without conflict. The primary audience of this text is aspiring and practicing principals. We hope to help them understand both the theory and practice of supervision, evaluation, and professional development. However, observing instruction, collecting data for reflection, and having conversations about teaching, are not the sole provinces of principals. Master teachers, teacher leaders, and teacher colleagues can also benefit from the supervisory sections of the book, especially the chapters on high-quality instruction, improving instruction, and the classroom data collecting tools. The book provides numerous tools specifically designed to collect a variety of data in classrooms to improve instruction. Embedded in each chapter are exercises to apply Theory into Practice by responding to a set of questions posed by the key issues of the chapter. After the explication and illustration of the key concepts and principles of the chapter, actual Instructional Leadership Challenges as described by a successful practicing principal for reflection and analysis.Table of Contents Preface Chapter 1: Learning Leadership Chapter 2: An Integrated Model of Learning Leadership Chapter 3: Creating a School Context to Improve Student Learning Chapter 4: A Model for Classroom Supervision Chapter 5: Supervision of Instruction Chapter 6: Supervisory Skills Chapter 7: High Quality Instruction Chapter 8: Improving Instruction Chapter 9: Professional Development Chapter 10: Evaluation Chapter 11: Implementing Evaluation Chapter 12: Supervision and Professional Development: An Application Chapter 13: Evaluation, Supervision and Professional Development: Applications Appendixes References About the Authors Index

Plus, it's an interesting way to teach phonics I hadn't seen before." —David Weller, The Barefoot TEFL Teacher“While working within a university-school partnership, I trained, supervised, and guided my teacher candidates as they implemented Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons with the lowest performing first grade readers at a large urban elementary school. Semester after semester, I witnessed children who were considered 'nonreaders' or poor readers advance to reading with joy and confidence and candidates who became skilled and proud of their newfound craft.” —Dr. Susan Syverud, Ph.D"I have spent years of my life being passionate about literacy and reading... In college I took a path that led me to keep teaching younger and younger children, trying to figure out why they were not prepared until I began directing childcare centers in 2015. I keep hearing/finding the same things. Children are not being taught to read! And parent/teachers have no idea this is happening until about 2nd or 3rd grade. The main reading curriculum is not scientifically researched or backed! Being an educator in this work, I recognize all the care, thought and research it takes to create a resource like this that is so easy for children and facilitators to understand and teach!” —Brittany Lemons, Family and Community Engagement Specialist–Birth to Five Illinois"Teach Your Child to Read In 100 Easy Lessons has been endorsed by the National Right to Read Foundation as an exemplary instructional program for teaching children to read...The program is academically sound--the results speak for themselves. The continued problem of illiteracy is an enormous one, but [this book has] made a very significant contribution to solving one of American’s greatest needs.” —Robert W.
