Book SynopsisThe vitreous body long has been the most mysterious of all ocular structures, owing perhaps to its seeming simplicity. There have been few concerted, sustained efforts to unravel the mysteries of how vitreous is composed and what role it plays in normal physiology as well as pathology. Over the years, however, many studies have produced important findings concerning vitreous biochemistry, structure, physiology, and pathobiology. Published on the 25th anniversary of Sebag''s first book on Vitreous, this second installment is nearly five times longer than its predecessor, reflecting how much has been learned in the past quarter century. This well-constructed compendium not only addresses the most current scientific knowledge, but also reviews clinical perspectives in a manner that lends richness to the scope of the book. Written by 90 authors, this book has 56 chapters organized into 7 sections: Biochemistry; Anatomy, Development, and Aging; Pathology/Pathobiology; PhysiTrade Review“A striking feature of this textbook is the stunningly vivid color illustrations that have remarkable resolution, in spite of considerably large size. Graphs and tables are featured in both grayscale and color, adding significantly to the ease of comprehension when reading this book. … this book is not only useful to skilled clinicians and expert scientists, but also students, as the book has no competition anywhere in the world.” (Taiji Sakamoto, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 257, 2019) Table of ContentsPREFACE: J. Book SynopsisBrilliant, volatile and invariably male, the surgeon stereotype is a widespread and instantly recognisable part of western culture. Setting out to anatomise this stereotype, Cold, hard steel offers an exciting new history of modern and contemporary British surgery. The book draws on archival materials and original interviews with surgeons, analysing them alongside a range of fictional depictions, from the Doctor in the House novels to Mills & Boon romances and the pioneering soap opera Emergency Ward 10. Presenting a unique social, cultural and emotional history, it sheds light on the development and maintenance of the surgical stereotype and explains why it has proved so enduring. At the same time, the book explores the more candid and compassionate image of the surgeon that has begun to emerge in recent years, revealing how a series of high-profile memoirs both challenge the surgical stereotype and simultaneously confirm it.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Sir Lancelot Spratt and the myth of the modern surgeon1 Self-made myths2 Surgeons in film, fiction, and on TV screens 3 Surgical conduct and surgical communities4 Gender in surgery5 Race and ethnicity in surgery6 Surgical time7 Military myths and metaphorsConclusion: moving mythsBibliographyIndex

Medical writing at its most exhilarating." - Michael Paul Mason"Comprehensively researched, deftly told, and radiating both intellect and passion... Essential reading for anyone interested not only in the history but also in the future of medicine." - Frank Huyler"A history of surgery that is informative, entertaining, and highly readable." Library JournalA fascinating history of the practice of surgery from one of the leading figures in the field, chronicling centuries of scientific breakthroughs by the discipline's most dynamic, pioneering doctors.Written by an author with plenty of experience holding a scalpel, Dr. David Schneider's The Invention of Surgery is an in-depth biography of the practice that has leapt forward over the centuries from the dangerous guesswork of ancient Greek physicians through the world-changing "implant revolution" of the twentieth century. The Invention of Surgery explains this dramatic progress and highlights the personalities of the discipline's most dynamic historical figures. It links together the lives of the pioneering scientists who first understood what causes disease, how organs become infected or cancerous, and how surgery could powerfully intercede in people's lives, and then shows how the rise of surgery intersected with many of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last century, including the evolution of medical education, the transformation of the hospital from a place of dying to a habitation of healing, the development of antibiotics, and the rise of transistors and polymer science. And as Schneider argues, surgery has not finished transforming; new technologies are constantly reinventing both the practice of surgery and the nature of the objects we are permanently implanting in our bodies. Schneider considers these latest developments, asking "What's next?" and analyzing how our conception of surgery has changed alongside our evolving ideas of medicine, technology, and our bodies.Trade ReviewBold and compelling - The Wall Street Journal

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSurgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most frequent complications after abdominal surgery as abdominal procedures are often clean-contaminated, contaminated or even dirty procedures, so long the gastrointestinal tract, plenty of microorganisms, is entered. SSI is associated with morbidity and mortality, and reduces the patients' quality of life after surgery. Moreover, it prolongs hospital stay and requires increased instrumentation, medication and complementary tests, altogether representing an economic burden for the Health Services. This has led to the development of several Guidelines and Consensus documents, including prophylactic measures to prevent SSI. Different scientific societies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), have published recommendations for the prevention of SSI in the last years. All the documents agree with most of the recommendations. However, the evidence grade of these recommendations is often low to moderate and with the aim to generalise these measures to all the surgical procedures, the extrapolations lead to a lowered evidence power. Thus, in some cases the force of the recommendations is based on the opinion of experts in the field. The aim of this book is to revise the actual evidence about these prophylactic measures in abdominal surgery.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/prophylaxis-of-surgical-site-infection-in-abdominal-surgery/

Book SynopsisSOLVING FOR WHY chronicles one man's journey to find the answer to the biggest of all life's questions: "Why?" Following a traumatic car accident, Dr. Shrime-the child of Lebanese immigrants fleeing a civil war, who later became a successful practicing surgeon in Boston-found himself compelled to change the course of his life, determined to find meaning and satisfaction even if it meant diverting from America's idea of "success." Featuring stories, insights, and research from his own exceptional life and work, SOLVING FOR WHY is the story of Dr. Shrime's search for-and discovery of-lifelong fulfillment. Now a global surgeon operating on a hospital ship docked off the coast of West Africa and one of the few global experts on surgery in low- and middle-income countries, Dr. Shrime seeks to impart the wisdom of the lessons he's learned over the course of his search for a life of true contentment. In the tradition of Dr. Paul Farmer's To Repair the World, Dr. Atul Gawande's Better, and Dr. Michele Harper's The Beauty in Breaking, SOLVING FOR WHY combines personal stories with deep, thoughtful research into the challenges of working in modern medicine in the 21st century and the commodification of work in America.A story of discovery and transformation, SOLVING FOR WHY seeks to help readers answer the "why" of their own lives and ultimately find joy outside the status quo.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRichard Karl, a doctor and teacher, takes the reader closer than any writer before into the corridors of the hospital, on the surgical table, and into the world of medicine. In these pages we see the tragedies and triumphs of modern medicine: the beauty of surgery done well, and the aftermath of operations that fail to deliver on the hopes of the doctor and patient. We witness the "M&M"-the morbidity and mortality meeting-where doctors scrutinize their own work and mistakes, and the often inevitable outcomes of treatment. Suffused throughout are Karl’s keen observations on the workings of the human body and its immense capacity for healing. "...I celebrate the rich privilege accorded the practicing surgeon. The surgical life is really about bearing witness to the human condition and about respecting the many almost whimsical variations of biology and about the intersection of the two. It is remarkable, really, the way I get to know people so intimately so quickly, and to observe the brave and often noble behavior in them, while I witness the relentless push of biology, the aging and decay, the growth and development, but most especially the healing, both physical and emotional. It is this natural drive of our bodies to repair themselves from all injuries (including the surgeon's wounds) that is the centerpiece of medicine. Without it no surgeon could cut." Written with economy and subtlety, Across the Red Line offers a vivid picture of disease and the miracle of life. It will interest anyone who's ever been on either side of the surgical table.Trade Review"Richard Karl appears to be one of those rare surgeons who cares about as well as for his patients, who speaks to them in English, rather than confusing them with complex medical terms, and who in these difficult days still loves surgery. I admire his ability to describe technical matters in simple language. His book is engagingly conversational, and, like many surgeons, he's a great storyteller."-Joan Cassell, Ph.D., Department of Surgery, Washington Medical School, St. Louis "[Karl is] a natural storyteller and writer... He writes short, pithy sentences and gives a description of an MRI that should speak for everyone who has survived that procedure. Dr. Karl has an acute sense of patients' rights, and members of Congress would do well to read his book before voting on the matter."-Mary McGrory, The Washington Post "From the introduction, readers will be struck with how well this book captures the human side of medicine... It's enlightening to read as Karl eloquently chronicles the sleepless nights spent worrying about patients, the outcomes that were more related to luck than his expertise and the very moving conversations held at the end of life."-Tribune & Times (Tampa, Florida) "In Across the Red Line the author describes much that is satisfying in being an academic surgeon. [Karl] emphasizes the pleasures of teaching, the satisfaction of performing complex surgery, and the great joy in participating in the course of patient recovery...he emphasizes the emotional rewards of surgical work and the privileged interaction with the secrets of bodies and patients."-Dr. Sanford E. Feldman, The Journal of the American Medical Association "...[A] collection of vignettes about the training, practice, and personal life of a busy surgeon...The chapter about the M&M conference is especially revealing and familiar...I recommend this easy-to-read, heartwarming, and familiar book. It will cause you to reflect, remember, and smile."-James O. Menzoian, The Journal of Vascular Surgery "14 tough and gritty essays... If you want to know what it's like to chat with someone one minute and cut into him in the next... this book won't disappoint."-Albert Howard Carter III, St. Petersburg Times "Dr. Karl is a good storyteller. No, make that a very good storyteller... This book will appeal to laypeople as well as to health care practitioners. The book contains no revelations for the surgeon-nor need it contain any. Across the Red Line provides enjoyable reading about things infrequently discussed, and that's reason enough to pick it up."-The Permanente Journal "...spellbinding...The book is entertaining in some parts, but very intense in others, making it difficult to put down. It has value for anyone interested in medical matters or simply a good read, and will be helpful for prospective medical students to decide whether surgery interests them."-KliattTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: Across the Red Line1. Book SynopsisThere are two types of brain tumours: primary brain tumours that originate in the brain and metastatic (secondary) brain tumours that originate from cancer cells that have migrated from other parts of the body. Primary brain cancer rarely spreads beyond the central nervous system, and death results from uncontrolled tumour growth within the limited space of the skull. Metastatic brain cancer indicates advanced disease and has a poor prognosis. Primary brain tumours can be cancerous or non-cancerous. Both types take up space in the brain and may cause serious symptoms (eg: vision or hearing loss) and complications (eg: stroke). All cancerous brain tumours are life threatening (malignant) because they have an aggressive and invasive nature. A non-cancerous primary brain tumour is life threatening when it compromises vital structures (eg: an artery). In the United States, the annual incidence of brain cancer generally is 15-20 cases per 100,000 people. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in patients younger than 35. This new book brings together the leading research in this dynamic area of research.

Book SynopsisInjuries and disease commonly affect the hand and these can significantly affect the ability of an individual to perform activities of daily living. The use of regional outcome measures or scoring systems is important as it allows comparison between these injuries and disease, and allows clinicians to assess progression and the effects of different treatment modalities. A patient-completed questionnaire is efficient in terms of time and resources, and allows the assessment of outcome without the need to attend an outpatient clinic. The Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, the Patient Evaluation Measure (PEM) questionnaire, and the Michigan Hand Outcome (MHO) questionnaire are a few of the region-specific outcome measures commonly used for the hand, and are patient-completed questionnaires. They are frequently used to assess self-reported patient outcome in orthopaedics, rheumatology and neurology. In this book, the validity, reliability, responsiveness and bias of the various questionnaires used for the assessment of the hand is discussed.

Book SynopsisDuring the past decade, significant progress in molecular and cellular te- niques has greatly advanced our understanding of the wound healing p- cess. Many of these new techniques have been utilized in the context of more classic models of wound healing. The combination of new and classic approaches has allowed scientists to make exciting discoveries in the field of tissue repair, resulting in an explosion of information about the healing p- cess. Importantly, these new findings have great relevance beyond wound healing itself. The injury repair process cuts across many disciplines, exte- ing to such broad fields as cancer, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. The relevance of the field to these many disciplines has generated great interest in models and methods for the study of wound healing. The goal of Wound Healing: Methods and Protocols is to provide scientists from many dis- plines with a compendium of classic and contemporary protocols from r- ognized experts in the field of wound healing. We hope this volume will be useful not only to those working within the field itself, but also to scientists from other disciplines who wish to adapt wound healing models to their own experimental needs. The process of wound healing encompasses many different biologic p- cesses, including epithelial growth and differentiation, fibrous tissue prod- tion and function, angiogenesis, and inflammation.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "Clinical and basic science researchers with an interest in wound healing of various kinds are an appropriate audience for this work. Editors and authors represent some of the leading wound healing laboratories in the United States with a smaller number of presentations from overseas. . .Chapters are written in a straightforward manner. . .This book is a collection of techniques and insights which belongs on the shelf of laboratories or research organizations having an interest in wounds." -Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal"This informative volume provides a highly practical collection of widely used model systems and methods for studying the injury repair process and is therefore highly recommended as a valuable reference source for all individuals with interests in wound healing." - Carbohydrate Polymers"The editors have done an impressive job of editing the book into both a practical and readable style. It is highly recommended for any group that wishes to participate in this exciting and expanding field of research." -British Journal of Surgery "This book … provides a range of classical and more recent tools in wound research. … an impressive collection of both animal and in vitro-based techniques useful for experimental studies of tissue damage and repair. … Each chapter has a concluding notes section offering valuable suggestions and warnings based on practical experience. The book is highly recommended for all basic and clinical researchers involved in tissue repair biology and particularly those with an interest in experimental wound modelling and analysis." Book SynopsisInterest in surgical research was a decisive factor in the surgical advances seen in the 20th century. From the "stormy petrel" of surgery (John B. Murphy) to the pioneering Mayo brothers and the gifted surgeons who revolutionised cardiac surgery (Drs Blalock, DeBakey, both Lilleheis, and Wangensteen), surgeons have advanced their practice by carefully planned and conducted studies. The principles of surgical research formulated by these leaders still pertain to the many challenges of contemporary surgery. Research results have a direct benefit when applied to the clinical sciences and patient care. Procedures that were once extraordinary, such as open-heart surgery, are now almost routine. Knowing that research is the basis for evidence-based medicine makes it obvious that interest in research facilitates the understanding and application of evidence-based principles. Principles of Research: From Idea to Publication draws on Dr Toledo-Pereyra''s extensive experience as a surgeon, teacher, researcher, and research director to present profiles of accomplished scientists who exemplify the best traditions of surgical research.

Book SynopsisFilled with take-away messages and valuable insights, Aesthetic Breast Surgery by Elizabeth Hall-Findlay, MD, is a masterful text that you will refer to time and again. It presents a personal and time-proven approach to all forms of aesthetic breast surgery. This book is a distillation of the author's extensive experience and provides her unique perspective on problem-solving and patient analysis. Dr. Hall-Findlay has spent years measuring and studying patient results to help other surgeons use "science" to improve the "art" of aesthetic breast surgery. She has developed an approach to analysis and surgery which is simple and consistent-with results that can be achieved by all surgeons. Prepare Yourself for a Master Class in Aesthetic Breast Surgery With personal insights and wisdom pervading every page, this book provides the reader with a master class in aesthetic breast surgery by one of the world's leading experts. Dr. Hall-Findlay is widely known for her popularization of the medial pedicle approach to vertical breast reduction and this is covered in depth. However, her accomplishments in breast surgery extend far beyond this technique. Her ongoing innovations continue to advance the field. In this semi-atlas work, she brings her considerable expertise to bear on the range of aesthetic breast surgery procedures as she describes her individual approach to patient evaluation, operative planning, clinical decision-making, and operative technique. Comprehensive Coverage Divided into nine comprehensive chapters, the book begins with key chapters on analysis, concepts, applied anatomy, and patient selection that lay the foundation for the technical descriptions that follow. These introductory chapters are not to be missed. They offer a unique approach to patient assessment and alert the reader to critical anatomic landmarks that strongly influence the success of operative procedures. Concepts such as the breast footprint (high-breasted and low-breasted patients) are examined to help readers understand the realistic possibilities for what can and cannot be achieved when planning breast surgery. The emphasis is on the decision-making process involved in choosing the right approach for each patient and then planning the procedure with these landmarks in mind. The next seven chapters are devoted to operative technique. A consistent format is used in each chapter with detailed information on patient evaluation, planning, technique, revisions, complications, and outcomes. These pages are liberally illustrated with step-by-step descriptions depicting breast augmentation, vertical breast reduction with the medial pedicle, liposuction-only breast reduction, mastopexy, mastopexy/augmentation, and surgery for breast asymmetries. Information on avoidance and treatment of problems and complications is also highlighted throughout the book. Of particular note is the comprehensive information on nipple necrosis in the reduction chapter; this provides essential information to help surgeons who are faced with decreased blood supply to the nipple. Beautifully Illustrated Beautiful and dramatic color illustrations and numerous preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative images help the reader visualize the steps of each procedure and appreciate the excellent long-term results that can be achieved. Unique Features Throughout the technique chapters, artwork icons are paired with photographic images to better elucidate the surgical technique being described. Key points are highlighted, and a summary box outlining central issues concludes each chapter. Two DVDs contain operative video to complement the text.Table of ContentsContents PART I Concepts and Principles 1 Breast Analysis and Clinical Concepts 2 Applied Anatomy: Key Concepts for Modern Breast Surgery 3 Surgical Principles 4 Patient Selection, Education, and Surgical Decision Making PART II Technique 5 Breast Augmentation 6 Vertical Breast Reduction 7 Liposuction-Only Breast Reduction 8 Breast Re-reduction 9 Mastopexy 10 Mastopexy-Augmentation 11 Nipple Necrosis 12 Breast Asymmetry Index Video Contents Breast Augmentation Video A-1: Preoperative markings for subglandular breast augmentation Video A-2: Intraoperative review of markings for subglandular breastaugmentation Video A-3: Infiltration for subglandular breast augmentation Video A-4: Pocket dissection for subglandular breast augmentation Video A-5: Implant insertion for subglandular breast augmentation Video A-6: Incision closure for subglandular breast augmentation Video A-7: Wrap-up for subglandular breast augmentation Video B-1: Preoperative markings for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-2: Intraoperative review of markings for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-3: Infiltration for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-4: Pocket dissection for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-5: Implant insertion for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-6: Incision closure for subpectoral breast augmentation Video B-7: Wrap-up for subpectoral breast augmentation Vertical Breast Reduction Preoperative markings Intraoperative review of markings Infiltration Pedicle creation Parenchymal resection Pillar closure Closure of dermis Liposuction for contouring Skin closure Wrap-up Breast Re-reduction Video A: Re-reduction of previous vertical breast reduction Video B: Re-reduction of previous inverted-T breast reduction Mastopexy Preoperative markings Intraoperative review of markings Infiltration Deepithelialization Creation of inferior wedge Elevation of pectoralis strip Closure of pillars Closure of dermis Skin closure Wrap-up Mastopexy-Augmentation Preoperative markings Intraoperative review of markings Infiltration Pedicle creation Inferior wedge excision Subpectoral pocket dissection Pillar closure Skin closure Wrap-up

Book SynopsisThis book represents a refreshing and broad view of the nature of allografts, as well as the challenges involved in their use as critical therapy for a variety of different health problems. It is the work of a group of very talented and experienced physicians representing different medical disciplines, but all of them intimately involved with the use of allografts, presenting their distilled experience. The notion of allografts is explored in specialty areas ranging from orthopaedics and thoracic surgery to kidney and liver transplantation, in an effort to identify certain common themes having to do with the immunological response to the allograft and the various methods to avoid rejection. Chapters in this book present current challenges in the use of bone allografts in complex orthopaedic procedures, in addition to dealing in depth with the use of hepatic and renal allografts in liver and kidney transplantation. Complex issues, such as the role of the immune system trying to deal with allograft acceptance or rejection on the one hand, and the presence of hepatitis B or C infection on the other hand, with the addition of the possibility of coexisting hepatocellular malignancy, are at the core of this book. The authors present the therapeutic problems seen in clinical practice and offer possible solutions, based on their extensive experience. This book will be a valuable resource to scientists involved in disciplines such as transplantation, immunology, and orthopaedics, as the themes that are analysed here cover a broad range of areas.

Book SynopsisVertebroplasty and kyphoplasty represented and represent two mainstays of minimally invasive spine surgery. Inevitably, these procedures left some unresolved issues that must be solved. This monograph is born from a concrete and shared necessity: to clarify indications and limits, to assess advantages and disadvantages and to identify new perspectives relating to use of third generation devices for percutaneous vertebral augmentation. Actually, the concept of minimally invasive surgery and tissue sparing surgery are revolutionizing always the surgical approach to many diseases, especially for spine surgery: therefore it is important to know the "when and how". This text does not want to be anything more than a "short essay", and it is aimed especially to young people, residents and specialists, but also to all those who are desirous to find and to read "something" that can be a basis for reflection, even in order to improve their surgical technique. In line with United States and Northern Europe, we are sure that the differences between Orthopaedic Surgeon and Neurosurgeon should be complementary, in order to prompt a curious comparison for creating partnerships and not barriers. In fact, this monograph is the result of the work among Neurosurgeons and Orthopaedic Surgeons. This work is born from the collaboration of many surgeons: the "elder" ones, who have offered all their knowledge and experience and the "young" ones, who are eager to learn, know and especially to share between them. In this text, spine functional anatomy and biomechanics brief mentions will be done, in order to understand well the etiology and the evolution of spinal pathology, both traumatic, metabolic and tumoral; the different treatment options will be taken into account, the open and minimally invasive techniques, the percutaneous approaches as well as third generation devices for percutaneous vertebral augmentation. The goal is not to compare the different devices in order to identify a winner. The real goal is to understand what pathological condition can bring out the best properties of a specific device, in order to establish which device is the most appropriate in a specific case. Therefore, through the experiences of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons and Neuroradiologists, we will explore and identify the correct procedures, but especially the potential "red flags", in this field of research.
