Surgery Books
Nova Science Publishers Inc Postoperative Pain: From Management to Recovery
Book SynopsisMost patients who undergo surgery will experience acute postoperative pain, making postoperative pain management an important topic. Pain management has shifted towards a multimodal approach and away from the traditional opioid administration due in part to the opioid crisis. As opioids came to be abused, with many starting after initially being prescribed opioids by their physician, the focus on how to manage pain changed. However, a multimodal approach also has benefits outside of decreasing use of opioids such as targeting multiple pathways of pain to lead to more favorable outcomes for patients. A multimodal approach does not consist of the same approach for each patient. It gives the ability to tailor the pain management approach to the patient and the type of surgery. In this textbook, the approach to postoperative pain management for different surgeries will be highlighted. The different modalities used for a multimodal approach will be defined with their underlying pathophysiology explained. This textbook will give a basic understanding of how the combination of multiple medications often results in superior outcomes, with better patient satisfaction and often lower doses being required due the additive effects of different pathways being targeted.

Pitch Publishing Ltd Knife in the Fast Lane: A Surgeon's Perspective
Book SynopsisKnife in the Fast Lane charts the history of care for sportspeople from the expert view of a doctor and orthopaedic surgeon with over 40 years' experience. Bill Ribbans gives you the inside track on the life of a surgeon operating on some of sport's biggest names. From looking after world champions from eight different sports and Olympians with 27 medals between them, to having his actions scrutinised by millions at Twickenham, Bill's experiences are interwoven with fascinating, surprising and controversial subjects from the annals of sports medicine. Taylor & Francis Ltd General Surgery Outpatient Decisions
Book SynopsisFew doctors receive formal training in how to conduct an outpatient consultation or how to compose and dictate an outpatient letter. Trainee surgeons in each new specialty spend their first few weeks in outpatient clinics learning by experience with all the pitfalls this entails. Much work involves seeing patients who have been brought back for review by their predecessors. Problems are caused by inexperience, unfamiliarity, fear of making mistakes, the pressure of patient numbers and lack of training.New doctors will find little help in the standard textbooks on how to follow-up patients. This book provides the necessary background information to enable rational decision making in a concise and economical style. It describes reasonable and safe lines of management suitable for most patients, ideal for when discussion with a senior colleague is not possible. Since the First Edition was published surgical outpatient services have undergone tremendous change. The traditional general surgical clinic has been replaced by specialist clinics where decisions on patient management are taken by multidisciplinary teams. This new edition is multi-authored to take account of the multidisciplinary approach. As well as an overall review of general outpatient issues, every major specialty is covered, with clear notes for each condition covering history, examination, investigations, results, treatment, follow-up and post-operative follow-up. The book can be read before or during clinics, and enables trainees to have an action plan in mind before they walk into a consultation. All surgeons have to be trained to go through the process of dealing with unfamiliar clinical conditions for the first time. Surgeons will use this book as a useful foundation on which to build their own personal knowledge.Trade Review'Fills a gap in most surgical trainees' reading and education...This book provides an outstanding framework for trainees to confidently and capably care for outpatients -- whether in consultation, during the preoperative workup, or during postoperative care...rigorous and authoritative...This is a worthwhile purchase for any physician who wants to improve the experience of caring for outpatient surgical patients.' Imperial College Press Surgical Talk: Lecture Notes In Undergraduate
Book SynopsisThis textbook is an introduction and guide to undergraduate surgery. It has been a bestseller since its first edition in 2001.The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better students reaching the end of their undergraduate training. Avoiding a book that is too cumbersome, we have tried to make this volume readable and enjoyable, using various techniques to help the reader remember key facts: the text has been deliberately written in a tutorial-like story format as opposed to a set of lists, since this makes it easier to understand and remember. In addition to general surgery, the book contains sections on trauma, orthopaedics, urology and ENT, making it the only comprehensive textbook for medical students wishing to learn top tips in surgery.Subjects that are poorly covered in other main texts — such as fluid balance management and minor surgical procedures — are dealt with in a tutorial fashion in this book, and there is a section on how to problem-solve even in the context of areas unknown to the student. This book is useful for medical students and also for junior doctors during their day-to-day working lives, as well as those coming up to postgraduate exams. Each chapter is written by an authoritative author, alongside the book editors, and they have ensured it remains in the spirit of the bestselling previous editions.Table of ContentsSurgical Talk; Fluid Balance and Nutrition; Pre- and Post-Operative Management; Trauma, Shock, Head Injury, Burns; Hepatobiliary and Pancreas; Upper GI; Small Intestine and Colon; Rectum/Anus; Acute Abdomen; Breast; Lumps in Head, Neck and Skin; Hernias; Vascular Disease; Urology; Orthopaedics; ENT; Mock Questions.

This book is one of the first to provide strong evidence for the way in which patients can be assisted in the management of their anxiety. Moreover, it provides future direction for surgical nursing intervention in this new era of minimal invasive surgery where patients undergoing elective procedures increasingly require less physical nursing intervention and spend very little time within the acute hospital setting.Table of Contents21st Century: A Time for Change. TFM Publishing Ltd The Memoirs of Allen Oldfather Whipple: The man
Book SynopsisTo the abdominal surgeon a first successful Whipple procedure is what a first combat mission is to the fighter pilot: a symbol of competence -- the fruits of prolonged training. Not many surgeons managed to incorporate their names into a commonly used eponym; Allen Whipple did and so became immortalised as a household name to surgeons world-wide. Yet, little has been known and written about Whipple, the great American surgeon -- the person and his other interests. This is what this book is about: an edited version of Whipple's previously unpublished memories, which until now -- for more than forty years -- has collected dust. In these pages the retired Whipple describes the journey of his life from the very beginning in Persia, where he was born, to the very end in New Jersey where he died. He provides snap shots of himself, his family and friends, his colleagues, and the changing times in which he lived. The editors have abbreviated the original manuscript by a third and have added footnotes and illustrations. An introduction and 'end page' adds perspective to the memoirs. It has been said "God put the pancreas in the back because he did not want surgeons messing with it". Allen Whipple had the courage to mess with the pancreas and to show us how to mess with it successfully. But what kind of man was he and how did he arrive at his achievements? Find out in this book.

TFM Publishing Ltd EMQs for surgery
Book SynopsisThe assessment of medical knowledge is evolving and Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) are fast becoming one of the preferred structured question assessment of how well medical knowledge is applied in the clinical setting. The editors have enlisted the help of specialists in all relevant clinical specialties to create a bank of questions typical of the assessment of candidates in postgraduate examinations such as the MRCS/FRCS in the United Kingdom. It is likely that the Board Exams in the United States may follow and the question structure is of considerable help in self assessment at all levels.

TFM Publishing Ltd Cultivating a Thinking Surgeon: New perspectives
Book SynopsisThis book provides a classic supporting text for teachers and learners in the surgical field. The European Working Time Directive is just one of many factors that will radically change the way doctors work in the future. The aim of this book is to enable all those who teach young surgeons in the clinical setting to think about and prepare for a new and fresh approach to learning. The particular significance of this publication is that it makes a proper distinction between education and training, identifies the reasons why the postgraduate development of doctors as surgeons must involve education rather than merely training, and recognises that the education of surgeons must take place in the clinical setting. The book provides support in five areas: 1. It will enable surgical educators to develop on from the current and traditional teaching/learning relationship. 2. It takes as its basis the importance of professional values. 3. It provides for the first time a thorough educational framework, which will need to be utilised by the learner and educator to establish the educational focus of each trainee placement. 4. For the first time, it supports teachers and learners in developing the processes of reflective practice on a formal basis in surgical education. 5. It takes a new look at the assessment of the trainee in the light of new requirements and the needs of the new approaches to surgical education.Table of ContentsThe significance of clinical practice in the education of a surgeon; Professional values and the traditions of practice in surgery; The importance in postgraduate medicine of educational clues, principles and aims; Nurturing the learner and supporting learning in the clinical settings; Assessment and its role in education for clinical practice: an overview; Understanding and developing clinical thinking; Assessing clinical thinking; Exploring the knowledge base of surgical practice; Assessing technical and operative procedures in the context of teaching and learning surgery; Developing and enriching surgical teaching and learning through practitioner research; Index.

TFM Publishing Ltd Dead Medics’ Society
Book SynopsisDavid Gray is a disillusioned surgeon approaching retirement. One night, on the way home from an emergency aneurysm repair, he has a car crash and meets the spirit of the patient he's just operated on -- a man called Alf Angel. Alf, a simple and straightforward character, becomes Gray's guardian and travelling companion on a fantastic journey through time. They visit scenes from Gray's formative years as a young medic, before moving further back in time to learn something of the early trials and tribulations of scientific surgery. Through it all, Gray earnestly seeks the worth of his calling as a doctor and surgeon and ultimately, the nature and meaning of life itself. This is a short novella told in a tongue-in-cheek style using a mixture of amusing whimsy and, at times, profound insight into the minds of men who wield scalpels for a living. Although this short tale is clearly fiction, the historical figures and operations depicted are real, though the characterisation is down to poetic license. Read it and wonder.

TFM Publishing Ltd Pearce's Surgical Companion: Essential notes for
Book SynopsisThis book represents a review of all the subjects with which a junior doctor needs to be effortlessly conversant in their postgraduate surgical exams in order to qualify as a specialist trainee. It covers a full range of subjects, concisely written to aid the revision process and includes basic science, physiology, anatomy, examination techniques, operative surgery and clinical surgery topics. The latter two sections are further subdivided into their relevant surgical speciality for clarity and ease of learning: general surgery, orthopaedics, vascular surgery, ENT surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, and urology. The physiology section is further sub-divided into the following areas: respiratory, cardiac, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and general. The purpose of the book is to pull together the main subject areas to provide a coherent overview of the facts, as well as the principles, which examiners are looking for when deciding whether a doctor has the requisite skills and knowledge to proceed further with their training in surgery as a specialist. It contains essential required information, which would otherwise take months to gather by reading a variety of textbooks, each one specifically aimed at its own specialist topic.

TFM Publishing Ltd Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to
Book SynopsisThis book is a succinct set of notes in a question and answer format covering the fundamental principles of surgery. It is aimed at anyone who works in a surgical speciality, not only surgeons, but also nurses, operating department assistants, assistants in surgical practice, trainee surgeons, junior doctors, dentists, podiatrists and medical students of all surgically-oriented disciplines. Many facts and principles are important to those who work in a surgical field, but there is no single unifying book that has covered all the basic, essential material that EVERYONE should know, regardless of their discipline. Equally, many of the existing surgical principle books are written purely for surgeons and, of course, eighty percent of their content is relevant only to surgeons and medical students, and not the wider audience. There is a lot of redundancy, not to mention expense, in reading these books. As well as surgeons, there is a large group of people who work in surgery who need to know the answers to such things, for example: How the sizing system for needles works? How does diathermy work? Why do we wear gloves? What types of suture materials are available? How do wounds heal? This book is equally relevant to postgraduate surgeons, especially with the reorganisation in surgical training becoming ever more prevalent. It is now even more essential to have a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of surgery before specialising into one of today's surgical disciplines.Table of ContentsPre-operative investigations; Management of concomitant medical conditions; Preparation for theatre; Pathways and protocols; Theatre design and function; Anaesthesia; Principles of surgery; Basic surgical techniques; Recovery and immediate postoperative care; Postoperative ward care; Postoperative complications; Late complications, discharge and follow-up; Index.

TFM Publishing Ltd Clinical Surgery Made Easy: A companion to
Book SynopsisCreating a differential diagnosis and rationalising a treatment plan is a challenging task for medical students and young doctors at the early stage of their training. This process will also expose deficiencies in core knowledge and problems in applying certain components of their knowledge to varied clinical situations. Guided by experienced teachers, students and doctors in training best learn these skills at the bedside. Patients do not always present with classic textbook descriptions and clinical scenarios can often be varied. During the limited period of clinical training allocated in the surgical curriculum, students may not receive sufficient exposure to an evidence-based approach and decision making in clinical surgery. There is evidence that problem-based learning (PBL) stimulates critical thinking; frequent patient encounters, focused reading, commitment and enthusiasm to acquire the essential core knowledge are all necessary prerequisites in achieving the best outcome from problem-based learning. This book addresses the essentials; common clinical encounters, a clinical decision-making approach, care pathways, the essential core knowledge of clinical anatomy, pathophysiology pertinent to the topic and a concise discussion of management pathways based on the most up-to-date guidelines (e.g. NICE, SIGN, BASO, BSG) are presented in a student friendly style which makes it easier to retain facts. Frequently asked questions at examinations are emphasised during the discussion. This approach will guide and stimulate the reader to recognise, recall and apply the relevant facts to given clinical situations. Also included are self-assessment questions: EMQs (Extended Matching Questions), SBAs (Single Best Answers) and True/False types with relevant explanatory notes. The questions are created to reinforce the concepts and to try to inspire the student's thirst for knowledge. The book is primarily aimed at undergraduates and junior doctors.

TFM Publishing Ltd Smart Surgeons; Sharp Decisions: Cognitive skills
Book SynopsisA vital question that concerns many: how to make surgery safer? Is it by tightening the regulations and imposing rigid protocols or by empowering surgeons with the resources to help them make safer decisions? This is the book for those who would choose the second option. What do you think separates smart surgeons from the rest? Why, on the other hand, do surgeons make blunders despite having experience and knowledge? There is only one answer to both questions -- it is decision-making. Decision-making is an art and is at the heart of surgery. It decides between excellent and poor surgical performance. Although a vital part of professional activity, surgeons are not generally aware of how to optimise decision-making skills. Making a good decision is a skill that, like any skill, needs to be developed and this book reveals how surgeons can sharpen these skills. Presented here are the findings from decision science that surgeons, irrespective of speciality or seniority, can apply to everyday practice. Surgeons and pilots have many things in common. The field of aviation has improved passengers' safety over the years and some of the ideas used in the aviation industry can be translated to surgery to achieve better outcomes. Surgeons are required to adapt new strategies throughout their careers. Ideas taken from this book will help to speed up the learning curve. It offers answers to the questions which experienced surgeons may find difficult to explain. Equally, it answers the questions that trainees may even find difficult to ask. You are expected to be cognisant of the knowledge behind making decisions. Nonetheless, no-one tells you how to access this information easily. This book is the key to that vital information.Trade Review"This is a very helpful book, written in a friendly and accessible style. It provides many fascinating examples of the phenomenon which so interests us surgeons. Surgeons of all ages and specialties will find it helpful to know about themselves and how they are challenged." -- Mr Tony Giddings, Past President of the Association of Surgeons of GB & Ireland

TFM Publishing Ltd Schein's Common Sense Prevention and Management
Book SynopsisThe enthusiastic feedback received from readers of the international best-seller "Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery" inspired the editors to do a similar book dedicated to surgical complications: practical, non-formal, internationally relevant (in all types of practice and levels of hospitals) -- and definitely not politically correct: what is considered taboo by others is not taboo for us; here we discuss everything! As in the editors' previous book, the use of references is restricted to the absolute minimum, and citing figures and percentages is avoided as much as possible. The chapters in this book are the opinion of experts -- each contributor has a vast personal knowledge and clinical experience in the field he is writing about. This book will help all surgeons (and their patients), avoid the misery of complications, and will provide advice on the management of those that are unavoidable. Complications and death are an integral component of surgery. Surgeons have to look death in the eyes, try to prevent it and vanquish it -- this is what this book is all about.Table of ContentsWhat Are Complications? TFM Publishing Ltd The Little Book of Surgical Cartoons
Book SynopsisEvgeniy Perelygin -- a surgeon who is known to his friends as Perya -- has managed to capture the funny, the amusing, and the ridiculous aspects of what surgeons do and think. Yes, surgeons take their profession very seriously and their patients even more so. But, what is true in any aspect of human life is also true for surgery -- there is always something to laugh about, or even ridicule. And this includes, above all, surgeons themselves! In each of these cartoons lurks the kernel of a basic surgical truth. This truth has been blown up, distorted, and exaggerated, but remains at the heart of the picture. Each picture has a legend describing the situation, which is followed by an aphorism, quote, or comment. This book is essentially for surgical eyes -- they are all cutting edge, and will have the reader in stitches. Readers may also wish to use the images to enliven PowerPoint lectures!
