Zubaan Motherhood and Choice – Uncommon Mothers,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs both the bedrock of human survival and an unchallenged part of the "normal" female life, motherhood expects and even compels women to be mothers both symbolic and corporeal. Motherhood and non-motherhood is not just physiological. As the pivot to a web of heteronormative institutions like marriage and family, motherhood bears an overwhelming and decisive influence on women's lives. In the face of tradition and sociopolitical discourse and policies, Motherhood and Choice explores how women as embodiments of multiple identities can live stigma-free, authentic lives without having to abandon reproductive self-determination. Amrita Nandy asks the difficult questions here: How can women live fully? If autonomy is a basic human right, why do many women have little or no choice when it comes to motherhood? Do women know they have a choice? Through remarkable research and searing analysis, Nandy brings an important addition to feminist debates on the conflation of woman and mother, political and personal.

  • The State as Parent: International Research Perspectives on Interventions with Young Persons

Springer The State as Parent: International Research Perspectives on Interventions with Young Persons

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe thirty-five chapters in this book are edited versions of papers presented at the Advanced Research Workshop, State Intervention on Behalf of Children and Youth, which took place in Maratea, Italy, February 20-24, 1989. The Workshop was attended by leading child welfare researchers from most of the Western countries. Represented were scholars and practitioners from disciplines as diverse as law, social work, neurology, economics, political science, education, psychology, and psychiatry. This variety of disciplines considerably enriched the discussions at the Workshop and is reflected in a set of interesting and, we believe, potentially useful research papers. This book is divided into four sections, each dealing with dominant themes of state intervention. The first section deals with research on organizing for state intervention and related ways of providing accountability. The second section deals with research on young persons in conflict with the law, the third with research on child abuse and the final section with research on children in care. Many of the matters addressed in these papers relate to more than one of the topical theme headings and, therefore, might well have been located in different sections of the volume. Each section is introduced by an introductory statement that provides an overview of the papers and issues addressed, and suggests an agenda of research work to be undertaken. These introductions are based largely on workshop discussions and do not necessarily represent the views of their identified authors.Table of ContentsI Introduction: Research On Organization and Accountability For State Intervention.- 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisCross-border Marriages and Mobility: Female Chinese Migrants and Hong Kong Men focuses on cross-border marriages between mainland Chinese women and Hong Kong men, a phenomenon which is of critical importance to the transformation of Hong Kong. By examining the women’s motivations for migration and lived experiences in relation to the discursive, political, economic, and social circumstances of mainland China and Hong Kong, Avital Binah-Pollak demonstrates how these marital practices are causing the expanding and blurring of borders, so that there is a much wider strip of border in which the dichotomies of the rural/urban, periphery/center, and hybrid/national identities become more complex and negotiable. While this is particularly interesting and valid in the case of the border between mainland China and Hong Kong because of the particular nature of the relationship between these two societies, it may also apply to borders between many other societies worldwide.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: The Hong Kong China Border: A Space of Confinement and Movement Chapter Two: Motivations for Crossing Borders Chapter Three: "Same as Before, Living as a House Wife" Chapter Four: Hong Kong's Education: A Bridge to the 'First World' Chapter Five: New voices in Hong Kong: Local identity formation Concluding Thoughts: Home is not where the heart is but where it wants to be Bibliography Index

  • Fosterage in Medieval Ireland: An Emotional

Amsterdam University Press Fosterage in Medieval Ireland: An Emotional

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFosterage was a central feature of medieval Irish society, yet the widespread practice of sending children to another family to be cared for until they reached adulthood is a surprisingly neglected topic. Where it has been discussed, fosterage is usually conceptualised and treated as a purely legal institution. This work seeks to outline the emotional impact of growing up within another family. What emerges is a complex picture of deeply felt emotional ties binding the foster family together. These emotions are unique to the social practice of fosterage, and we see the language and feelings originating within the foster family being used to describe other relationships such as those in the monastery or between humans and animals. This book argues that the more we understand how people felt in fosterage, the more we understand medieval Ireland.Trade Review"With Fosterage in Medieval Ireland: An Emotional History, Thomas O’Donnell has written the first book-length work on fosterage in the Middle Ages. • Manhood Is Not Easy: Egyptian Masculinities

The American University in Cairo Press Manhood Is Not Easy: Egyptian Masculinities

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this in-depth ethnography, Karin van Nieuwkerk takes the autobiographical narrative of Sayyid Henkish, a musician from a long family tradition of wedding performers in Cairo, as a lens through which to explore changing notions of masculinity in an Egyptian community over the course of a single lifetime. Central to Henkish’s story is his own conception of manhood, which is closely tied to the notion of ibn al-balad, the ‘authentically Egyptian’ lower-middle class male, with all its associated values of nobility, integrity, and toughness. How to embody these communal ideals while providing for his family in the face of economic hardship and the perceived moral ambiguities associated with his work in the entertainment trade are key themes in his narrative. Van Nieuwkerk situates his account within a growing body of literature on gender that sees masculinity as a lived experience that is constructed and embodied in specific social and historical contexts. In doing so, she shows that the challenges faced by Henkish are not limited to the world of entertainment and that his story offers profound insights into socioeconomic and political changes taking place in Egypt at large and the ways in which these transformations impact and unsettle received notions of masculinity.Trade Review"With a title taken from neighborhood graffiti, this 'bio-ethnography' of sha’bi accordionist Sayyid Henkish illustrates the challenge of living out masculine norms on Muhammad Ali Street, a lower-middle-class enclave for Cairo’s dancers, musicians and street performers throughout the 20th century."—AramcoWorld"An extraordinary work of meticulous scholarship."—Midwest Book Review"Unreservedly recommended for college and university library collections."—Al AhramTable of ContentsIntroduction Part ONE: Theoretical Reflections 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Family Violence in Japan: A Life Course

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides fresh sociological analyses on family violence in Japan. Aimed at an international audience, the authors adopt a life course perspective in presenting their research. Following a comprehensive overview of family violence in Japan in both historical and contemporary contexts, it then goes on to define the extent and causes of child abuse, intimate partner violence, filial violence, and elder abuse. In doing so, the book is the first of its kind to look at these different types of violence in Japanese families and simultaneously incorporate historical development of individuals and intergenerational factors. Furthermore, its reliance on the life course perspective enables readers to obtain a broader understanding of family violence in the country. Written by five Japanese family sociologists who have identified various major sociocultural characteristics that either induce or suppress family violence in Japan, it is a valuable resource not only to scholars and students of the topic, but also to those specializing in sociology, psychology, anthropology and comparative family studies around the globe.Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1: Introduction: Toward a Better Understanding of Family Violence in Japan.- Chapter 2: Child Abuse: The History and Current State in Japanese Context.- Chapter 3: Intimate Partner Violence: Domestic Violence from Japanese Perspectives.- Chapter 4: Filial Violence: An Unrevealed Problem for Decades.- Chapter 5: Elder Abuse and Family Transformation.- Chapter 6: Conclusion: Prevention and Intervention of Family Violence in Japan.

  • Dealing With Disagreements

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Dealing With Disagreements

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMost people can recall encounters, episodes and experiences involving disagreements over an issue. The more important the issue, the more it affects interpersonal relationships negatively when there is strong disagreement. Disagreements often generate negative thoughts, feelings and actions that significantly influence attitudes, decisions and behaviours. These dynamics in dealing with disagreement is part of our human psychology. If the underlying psychology is understood, this knowledge can facilitate personal and workplace relationships. It can also help address disagreements between policymakers and citizens or advocacy groups.Several questions have become more salient in recent years, particularly amid COVID-19 challenges, as Singapore society underwent significant changes that impact on the nature and level of attention given to the way we deal with disagreements. What factors should we pay more attention to when dealing with disagreements? What are the policy and societal contexts, and can we deal with disagreements in an ethical way? How are disagreements affected by people's social networks and social identities? What lessons can we learn from how we have dealt with disagreements? How do we approach disagreements better to effect positive changes? This book explores these and other issues about dealing with disagreements. The book is organised into four parts. Part 1 provides an overview of the issues involved in dealing with disagreements. Part 2 discusses issues of ethics and values in managing difficult situations. Part 3 analyses the relationships linking disagreements, social networks, diversity, and social identities. Part 4 addresses specific questions on dealing with disagreements in Singapore in terms of education, youths and inter-generational differences, the role and practice of the media, civil society advocacy and engagement, facts and signals in parliamentary debates and public discourse, dealing with feedback and viewpoints, political and public service leadership, and relationships between people and government. This book will provide new perspectives and possibilities on what it means to say 'dealing with disagreements', as we resolve problems and generate solutions to live a better life and build a stronger Singapore society.

Book SynopsisThis book identifies and analyzes the significant regional differences in suicide rates of various age groups and different sexes among Chinese rural residents. It goes beyond the analytic dichotomy in traditional Western suicide studies and argues that the phenomena of suicide among Chinese farmers are the result of a combination of social structure and social action, rather than being determined by either of these two factors alone. This study analyses suicide rates among young married women in rural areas as well as those of elderly people in rural areas. The responsive trend for the near future is also projected. The underlying dynamics and causal mechanisms of these phenomena are carefully analyzed using an innovative “structure – action theory” framework.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: Farmer Suicide in a Tight-knit Society.- Chapter 3: Farmer Suicide in a Loose-knit Society.- Chapter 4: Farmer Suicide in an Individualistic Society.- Chapter 5: Conclusion.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Youth Homelessness in Late Modernity: Reflexive

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the identities, embodied experiences, and personal relationships of young people experiencing homelessness, and analyses these in relation to the material and symbolic position that youth homelessness occupies in modern societies. Drawing on empirical research conducted in both urban and rural areas, the book situates young people’s experiences of homelessness within a theoretical framework that connects embodied identities and relationships with processes of social change. The book theorises a ‘symbolic economy of youth homelessness’ that encompasses the subjective, aesthetic, and relational dimensions of homelessness. This theory shows the personal, interpersonal and affective suffering that is caused by the relations of power and privilege that produce contemporary youth homelessness. The book is unique in the way in which it places youth homelessness within the wider contexts of inequality, and social change. Whilst contemporary discussions of youth homelessness understand the topic as a discrete ‘social problem’, this book demonstrates the position that youth homelessness occupies within wider social processes, inequalities, and theoretical debates, addressing theories of social change in late modernity and their relationship to the cultural construction of youth. These theoretical debates are made concrete by means of an exploration of an important form of contemporary inequality: youth homelessness.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: Understanding Youth Homelessness.- Chapter 2 Youth Homelessness, Reflexivity and Inequality in Late Modernity.- Chapter 3 Young Homeless Subjectivities: A Symbolic Economy.- Chapter 4 Identity: Becoming a Homeless Youth.- Chapter 5 Identity: Subverting Homelessness and Making a Home.- Chapter 6 Bodies: Being and Feeling Homeless.- Chapter 7 Relationships: Constructing the Other, Constructing the Self.- Chapter 8 Conclusion: The Symbolic Economy of Youth Homelessness and the Purpose of Homelessness Research.- Chapter 9 Afterword: The Practice of Ethical Research Interviews with Homeless Youth.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBorn in the Year of the Fire Tiger, Ann Wee moved to Singapore in 1950 to marry into a Singaporean Chinese family, entering into a new world of cultural expectations and domestic rituals. She went on to become a pioneer in Singapore’s fledging social welfare department and is often described as the founding mother of social work in Singapore. In A Tiger Remembers, she draws on her decades of experience getting to know the many shapes and forms of the Singapore family and witnessing how they transformed since the ’50s. Wee’s talent is for remembering and paying homage to the things history books often deem insignificant—things that can contain some of the most illuminating details about the day to day inner workings of families from many backgrounds, such as terms of endearment; the emotional nuance in social relations; questions of hygiene; the stories of convicts; tales of ghost wives and changeling babies; anecdotes from rural clan settlements and migrant dormitories; and the migration of families from squatter settlements into public housing. Affectionately observed and wittily narrated, with a deep appreciation of how far Singapore has come, this book brings to life generations of social change through a focus on the institution of the family.Trade Review“In narrating the stories of people and places Wee encountered in her years of cross-cultural learning in Singapore and Malaya (now Malaysia), she unfolds untold stories of our past. They will be new to many young Singaporeans today. I am certain this memoir will stimulate important conversations about our past heritage and culture.”

  • Changes in Work and Family Life in Japan Under

Springer Verlag, Singapore Changes in Work and Family Life in Japan Under

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way of work, the division of household labor, and family formation in Japan. One of the characteristics of Japanese employment practices is a stable employer–employment relationship and seniority-based wage system. In return, long working hours, especially for men who are called “salarymen” (salaried workers, or “company men”), are required. The pandemic has led to an expansion of telework and has reduced their working hours, which has made them return to their homes to work. In contrast, non-regular employees, who are mostly women, has become more unstable in employment and their incomes fell. This tendency has become even stronger under the pandemic.Compared with conditions in Western countries, in Japan wives have a greater responsibility for domestic chores. In the pandemic, as children's classes shifted to online and childcare support facilities were temporarily closed, the burden of housework and child-rearing increased for wives. However, husbands who worked from home shared a part of the housework, and popular home delivery services helped to reduce the burdens on wives. Japan is one of the developed countries with low fertility rates. Under the pandemic, many Japanese postponed starting a family, which further shrank the country’s birthrate. There was a remarkably significant tendency to postpone having children among economically disadvantaged and socially isolated families. This book provides a portrait of Japan’s experience regarding the notable impacts of the pandemic on work and family life.Table of Contents1.Introduction (Shigeki Matsuda).- -2.
