Beacon Press Just Add Hormones An Insiders Guide to the Transsexual Experience
Book SynopsisMatt Kailey lived as a straight woman for the first forty-two years of his life. Though happy as a social worker and teacher, he knew something wasn't right. Then he made some changes. With the help of a good therapist, chest surgery, and some strong doses of testosterone, Kailey began his journey toward becoming a man. As his body morphed and his voice dropped, Kailey began noticing subtle shifts in the way he was treated. Men suddenly stopped offering to change flat tires for him but insisted on talking to him about women and bodily functions. Women got nervous when he baby-talked to their infants but routinely asked him to move heavy things around the office. In these everyday exchanges, Kailey recognized the many ways we define what it means to be male. He also realized that, with few role models, he had to learn to accept himself as a person between two genders. As he writes about his transition from female to male, Kailey answers all the questions you've ever had a

Book SynopsisPlaces sexuality at the centre of slavery studies in the Americas. While scholars have marginalized or simply overlooked the importance of sexual practices in most mainstream studies of slavery, Daina Ramey Berry and Leslie M. Harris argue here that sexual intimacy constituted a core terrain of struggle between slaveholders and the enslaved.

Rowman & Littlefield Polyamorous Elders: Aging in Open Relationships
Book SynopsisThis book explores the unique group of elders, age 55 and older, who practice some form of consensual non-monogamy. It covers both the joys and challenges of multiple relationships for elders. Poly elders have the complexities of juggling multiple relationships, as well as managing all the issues of aging: managing medical conditions and disabilities (their own and/or their partners’), caregiving responsibilities for aging relatives, grieving the deaths of parents, siblings, and partners, retiring from careers and starting new lives, and/or moving into some form of senior living. Elders appear to be the fastest-growing segment of the polyamorous community. About one-fifth of Americans have been in a polyamorous relationship at some point, and around 5% currently are practicing it. Many elders have practiced polyamory for over 40 years, and are currently in stable, very long-term relationships. The book provides anecdotes from poly elders’ lives, including the constellation of relationships surrounding each individual, couple, or triad. It explores how their relationships develop and evolve. Many of the issues that face older poly folks are issues directly related to aging, but they usually have a uniquely poly "spin" to them that can make them more complex and challenging. Trade ReviewAs a Relational Therapist who works with polyamorous clients, I was delighted to read Polyamorous Elders. This book offers a comprehensive and evidence-based guide to better understand the lived experiences of aging polyamorous folks. After reading Polyamorous Elders, I believe that practitioners will be more equipped to facilitate effective individual and relational therapeutic services to polyamorous clients. -- Carling Mashinter, MSc, registered psychotherapist, Relationship Matters Therapy CentreHaving enjoyed Kathy Labriola's previous work, I was delighted to read her latest. She approaches polyamorous relationships with an accessible, thoughtful, and deft sense of compassion and thorough research. -- Rosie Wilby, author of Is Monogamy Dead? and The Breakup MonologuesThis text is a readable and engaging look into the lives of polyamorous elders. It is suitable for researchers or clinical practitioners hoping to apply the work, but would also serve well as an entranceway for academics and students investigating sex and aging and looking for more data and overall consideration of polyamorous relationships. A timely topic deserving of more attention. -- Jeanne Marie Kusina, interim director of The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; Distinguished University Lecturer, The University of ToledoThis book is engaging, accessible, expansive, and detailed. Obviously, it helps that the topic is fascinating, but Labriola presents these issues and cases in a straightforward and non-judgmental fashion. I routinely had my assumptions challenged even though I consider myself open-minded and have studied polyamory and human sexuality for several years. The strengths of this text include the author's expertise and clinical experience, the broad variety of polyamorous relationships presented, sympathetic attention to their challenges, and the good faith effort to honor intersectionality so as to sufficiently represent as many polyamorous people and relationships as possible. -- Albert Spencer, Communications Director, Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy and assistant professor, Department of Philosophy, Portland State UniversityThis book uniquely considers the special needs and outlook of people 55+ who identify as polyamorous. Not just an overview or a self-help book, the approach and information are very well-supported from the author's deep knowledge of polyamory, polyamorous communities, and her ongoing work with aging clients. -- Annalisa Castaldo, associate professor of English, Director of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Widener UniversityThis is an essential guide for counselors, therapists and healthcare professionals working with polyamorous clients. The author has managed to address so many issues, from sex life to retirement to facing death and grief, and has done so insightfully, drawing on several case studies. As a family therapist and an openly polyamorous person over 50, I am thrilled to see this book finally out in the world! -- Alex Iantaffi, PhD, MS, SEP, CST, LMFT, award-winning author of Gender Trauma: Healing Cultural, Social, and Historical Gendered Trauma and independent scholarIn Polyamous Elders: Aging in Open Relationships, Kathy Labriola gives us an intimate window into the lives of older individuals whose zest for life still burns bright. Whether for love, sex, companionship or all of the above, older individuals know they have earned the right to choose the path that fits them best and enables them to enjoy levels of satisfaction and bliss that often elude the younger and less experienced. My wish for you, dear reader, is that these personal stories will inspire you to live your life to its very fullest regardless of your age. -- Veronica Monet, ACS, author, coach, and founder of The Shame Free ZoneAs both an aspiring “polygeezer” and CNM (consensual non-monogamy) psychologist, this volume spoke to my heart and my practice. Labriola’s work opens up the often untold stories of polyamorous elders and allows us to learn from their lived experiences and worlds. The accounts Labriola shares are multifaceted and honest portrayals of the distinct challenges polyamorous elders face and the ways that they are navigated! -- Elizabeth Duke, PsyDTable of ContentsIntroductionWhat is the Prevalence of Polyamory Among Elders?“The Greatest Generation” and the “Baby Boomers”Intersectionality and Poly EldersStudies that Attempt to Fill in the Gaps on Information about Poly EldersResearch MethodsThe Demographics of Case Studies and Examples Presented of Poly Elders Part I: What Challenges are Most Common for Poly Geezers?Chapter 1: First of All, Sex!The Changing Nature of Sex for Poly GeezersCase Study #1: EliseThe Challenges of Sex for Poly GeezersJoshua’s StoryGinny’s storyCase Study #2: DaniloCase Study #3: AnastasiaJesse’s storyCase Study #4: LibbyStrategies Developed by Poly Elders to Solve the Sexual Changes of AgingCase Study #5: Jake and NoraCase Study #6: JosephCase Study #7: SitaMarilyn’s StoryCase Study #8: LiseJana’s StoryBeing Poly can Help Couples Navigate Sexual Problems and Find Delightful SolutionsCase Study #9: Jordan and LourdesCase Study #10: Dolly and JimChapter 2: Some Poly People Shift to Monogamy as They AgeCase Study #1: Mary and GeneCase Study #2: Vicky and BartCase Study #3: Terry and RandyChapter 3: Poly Elders and Celibacy: Is There a Contradiction? She Writes Press Fetish Girl: A Memoir of Sex, Domination, and Motherhood
Book SynopsisFetish Girl is a provocative, dark, and erotic memoir that tells it like it is. LaVey pulls readers into her evolving journey: dancer to stripper to dominatrix to erotic wrestler to BDSM aficionado—and all of this while being a single mother trying to do right by her son. This true story doesn’t hold back from diving into these subcultures with a keen eye for the kinky, for the sexy, for the power of taking a risk. “Fans of the Fifty Shades series will undoubtedly find much to savor in this ribald, risqué, and captivating remembrance.” —Kirkus ReviewTrade Review2019 Next Generation Indie Book Awards: Finalist in Memoir (Other) “LaVey’s prose has an unfettered honesty as she proudly displays the joys, scars, triumphs, disappointments, and hard-won lessons of her lifestyle. The tone of the narrative is educational and never judgmental or arrogant, allowing readers to understand the author on several different levels...Fans of the Fifty Shades series will undoubtedly find much to savor in this ribald, risqué, and captivating remembrance.” —Kirkus Reviews “Skip Sunday School and read this book instead! Join Bella LaVey on her unflinching journey through the underworld of sex, where the mingling of pleasure and pain reopen the childhood wound of love withheld and eventually lead to healing. Defined by compassion, humor, and violence, Fetish Girl proves that the spiritual path can be one of adventure, startling discovery, and large men in pink tutus. A moving and courageous book, full of outcasts and deviants--the kind of folks Jesus called friends.” —Donna M. Johnson, author of Holy Ghost Girl: A Memoir “Rich and evocative, Fetish Girl is an unflinching look at learning to live life on one’s own terms while making peace with the past. Bella LaVey compellingly renders the hard choices a single mother makes to support her child and define herself. At its center, this book celebrates healing, connection, and the power we have to shift our narratives.” —Charlotte Gullick, author of By Way of Water “Experience an unforgettable sense of discovery about your own erotic potential as you connect with Fetish Girl. Deep pain that Lavey turns from the inside out gives her permission to be 'sexy, fearless, and wild both in life and art—my life became my art.' You’re right there with her. Smell the ocean, the smoky clubs, the leather. Feel the raw energy that drives a force she embraces since childhood: 'Live free or die'.” —Susan Kaye, Ph.D. Sexologist “The storms LaVey weathers in Fetish Girl are bright, violent, and mostly internal: from breast milk to BDSM, sex work, drug addiction and single motherhood, she ultimately lap dances her way into a life she can truly prize.” —Antonia Crane, author of Spent “Bella is no nonsense, a hustler, and a savvy business woman. She jumps into everything she tries with an enviable amount of enthusiasm, whether it be working as a stripper or dominatrix, female wrestling, raising her kid, or starting a relationship. She makes mistake after mistake, but she owns it. Although her heart is always in the right place (her son), she is often distracted by sex, violence, relationships, drugs, relationships and relationships. There were lots of relationship problems that she wasn’t able to anticipate . . . Bella’s story resonates with truth, and that is invaluable in this day and age.” —NetGalley, 4 out of 5

Academica Press Sex and Privacy in American Law
Book SynopsisSex and Privacy in American Law presents empirical analyses of civil and criminal state court decisions applying the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in Lawrence v. Texas. After tracing key historical and legal developments leading up to the Lawrence decision's decriminalization of sodomy on substantive due process grounds in 2003, the study employs both quantitative and qualitative content analyses of 307 cases citing Lawrence over the two decades since it was decided. Results indicate that judicial decisions rarely embraced broad readings of Lawrence in criminal cases. In fact, Lawrence's long-term impact on criminal law has largely remained as limited as some commentators predicted shortly after the case was decided. In civil cases, courts tended not to rely on Lawrence significantly in most business and employment law cases. Courts that applied Lawrence in family law disputes – especially those involving same-sex couples – often construed the case narrowly at first, but broadened their interpretations after Obergefell v. Hodges brought marriage equality to the United States. Lawrence also impacted LGBTQ+ civil rights claims. Statistically significant geographic differences were found relating to how courts used Lawrence in those cases, with judges in Northeastern and Pacific coastal states having applied the precedent broadly, while judges in Southern and Midwestern states tending to have applied the case more narrowly. The implications are explored generally and within the specific context of the constriction of substantive due process rights in the wake Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

University Press of Florida Staging Discomfort: Performance and Queerness in Contemporary Cuba
Book SynopsisThis visionary volume examines how queer bodies are theatrically represented on the Cuban stage in ways that challenge one of the state's primary revolutionary tools, the categorization and homogenization of individuals. Bretton White critically analyzes contemporary performances that upset traditional understandings of performer and spectator, as well as what constitutes the ideal Cuban citizenry.Following the 1959 revolution, nonconformists were monitored and reported by local committees and punished or reformed by the government. Censorship was rampant, and Cuban art suffered as the state tried to control the national message. Through the lens of queer theory, White explores how the body has been central to the state's fear-based marginalization of gay life and looks at the ways these theatrical performances defuse that fear. She highlights the revolutionary model of masculinity and the role it plays in excluding people based upon visible queer difference. White finds that, through experimental performances of sexuality, actors create connections with audiences to evoke shared feelings of discomfort, intimacy, shame, longing, frustration, and failure, which echo the prevalence of these feelings in other Cuban spaces. By performing queerness, these plays question the state's narrative of heteronormativity and empower citizens to negotiate alternative understandings of Cuban identity.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Sexual History of the Global South: Sexual Politics in Africa, Asia and Latin America
Book SynopsisThe Sexual History of the Global South explores the gap between sexuality studies and post-colonial cultural critique. Featuring twelve case studies, based on original historical and ethnographic research from countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the book examines the sexual investments underlying the colonial project and the construction of modern nation-states. Covering issues of heteronormativity, post-colonial amnesia regarding non-normative sexualities, women's sexual agency, the policing of the boundaries between the public and the private realm, sexual citizenship, the connections between LGBTQ activism and processes of state formation, and the emergence of sexuality studies in the global South, this collection is of great geographical, historical, and topical significance.Trade ReviewThis is an exciting collection that delivers what it promises: a truly transnational investigation of sexuality from the perspective of scholars from the Global South. Much more than a history of sexualities, or an exploration of sexual diversity cross-culturally, it offers compelling insights into the close interaction between political and social histories and ideologies of sexuality. It gives the reader a broad view of the colonial, the post-colonial, and the often reactionary ways that new and modernizing states shored up heterosexuality while condemning other types of gendered and sexual expressions. This will undoubtedly be a foundational text in sexual histories of the global South. * Dr Evelyn Blackwood, author of Falling into the Lesbi World: Desire and Difference in Indonesia *In examining transnational genealogies of sexualities, this book connects many lost dots. The cartographies it draws of both the Western gaze and of gendered and sexualized constructs in the Global South will undoubtedly enrich the field of sexual theorizing and research. Good reading! * Dr Sonia Corrêa, research associate at ABIA (Brazilian Interdisciplinary Association for AIDS) and co-chair of Sexuality Policy Watch *The Sexual History of the Global South is an exciting and challenging read. It puts together solid and original research with highly engaging analysis of sexuality in the colonial constructs of development. In the twelve chapters it covers huge ground, making it important reading for both students and scholars. It promises to be a landmark in the booming field of sexualities. * Dr Wendy Harcourt, Sexuality Research Institute at the Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, The Hague *The Sexual History of the Global South is urgent reading for anyone interested in not only the history of sexual practices but also in critical theory and sexual politics. Its brilliant contributions go beyond mere "case studies" of diverse desires, pleasures, sexual subjects, and their regulation in colonial and post-colonial settings. By adapting Foucault and showing his Eurocentric limits, they open up whole new ways of thinking about sexual diversity as it interweaves with race, ethnicity, gender, class and the meanings of power in modernity. * Rosalind Petchesky, Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Hunter College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York *Table of Contents1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC War in the Blood: Sex, Politics and AIDS in
Book SynopsisEffective treatment for HIV and AIDS came in 1996. For sufferers in the developed world, this marked a true watershed moment: the end of the death sentence. But for many in the developing world, including in Southeast Asia, these new treatments remained far out of reach. In his early thirties, following the loss of his partner to an AIDS-related illness, Chris Beyrer wrote the first edition of War in the Blood. Three decades later, having served as president of the International AIDS Society, he believes we have arrived at an extraordinary milestone. For the first time, a patient has been demonstrably cured of HIV, new vaccine trials in Thailand have shown great promise, and the PrEP programme genuinely works. So why are over half of the estimated 38.8 million people living with HIV still not on treatment? War in the Blood is a labour of love, both a celebratory account of Southeast Asia and the story of our failure to protect those most vulnerable the world over – gay men, adolescent girls, sex workers, drug users, and transgender women. Beyrer offers an impassioned plea for our communities and governments – and our own hearts and minds – to stop denying the realities of sex, sexuality, and gender, and to take affirmative action.Trade ReviewPart travelogue, part ethnography, with an eye for the details of daily life, Beyrer takes the reader on a journey through the cultural and political contours of contemporary Southeast Asia... skilfully weaves diverse voices into a broad tapestry which includes the political economy of HIV... This informal, engaging book will appeal to a wide audience. * Praise for the First Edition, China Information *Excellent... hard-hitting and clear-sighted... A first-rate book, both scientifically based and written in terms the lay reader can understand. * Praise for the First Edition, South China Morning Post *Beyrer has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the global HIV epidemic that this book so richly describes. More than any other Western researcher, he understands the cultural and political factors that impact local epidemics. * Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Dean of the University of Malaya Faculty of Medicine *A Powerful testimony to the capacity to unite care with practical action... there is no other equally comprehensive account to match it of the travels of HIV infection through the peoples and landscapes of Asia. * Praise for the First Edition, Jeremy Seabrook *As timely and relevant today as it was when it was first published, telling a deeply personal account of the AIDS epidemic and the people still being left behind. * Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS *Offers honest insights on sex between men, drug use, sex work, and transgender people in Southeast Asia. Chris Beyrer offers pragmatic solutions to inspire a new generation of leaders. * Midnight Poonkasetwattana, Asia-Pacific Community of MSM Organizations (APCOM) *Beyrer writes with the rigour of an outstanding scientist, and the compassion and energy of a tireless advocate. * Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine *Table of ContentsPreface to the Second Edition Introduction Part I: Countries 1. The Choir Press Flaps and Chats: My own personal journal of bereavement and grief
Book SynopsisA true story about coping and dealing with the many different emotions felt from bereavement and grief. Flaps and Chats follows the sad, traumatic but also liberating, and sometimes hilarious, journey of the author 'going it alone' after the loss of her beloved husband, her mother-in-law and finally her own mother. From Chatlines to affairs, from dating apps to swinging clubs, from foot fetishes to random sexual encounters. Free-falling into a hedonistic but unrealistic and unsustainable lifestyle. Brill Erotic Subjects and Outlaws: Sketching the Borders of Sexual Citizenship
Book SynopsisThis book examines the intricacies of emergent sexual citizenship. Designed for academics and broader audiences alike, the collection covers the theorization of sexual citizenship, the exploration of case studies in law, the relationship between sexual citizenship and bio-politics, and finally the erotic dissidence of sexual outlaws. The borders of sexual citizenship are traced, as authors investigate what it means to be ‘inside,’ as erotic subjects, or outside, as ‘sexual outlaws.’ The issues of inclusion and exclusion are approached through diverse methodological and analytical lenses: some articles are theoretical and philosophical, others are empirically based, presenting the findings of sociological and ethnographic research projects; some are textual analyses, of religious texts, film texts, and of legal discourse. Contributors are Abidemi Fasanmi, René Hirsch, Elene Lam, Jaclyn Lanthier, Todd G. Morrison, Nick J. Mulé, Elly-Jean Nielsen, Serena Petrella, Olivia Schuman and Deww Zhang.Table of ContentsNotes on Contributors Erotic Subjects and Outlaws: Sketching the Borders of Sexual Citizenship. Brill Expanding the Rainbow: Exploring the Relationships of Bi+, Polyamorous, Kinky, Ace, Intersex, and Trans People
Book SynopsisExpanding the Rainbow is the first comprehensive collection of research on the relationships of people who identify as bi+, poly, kinky, asexual, intersex, and/or trans that is written to be accessible to an undergraduate audience. The volume highlights a diverse range of identities, relationship structures, and understandings of bodies, sexualities, and interpersonal relationships. Contributions to the volume include original empirical research, personal narratives and reflections, and theoretical pieces that center the experiences of members of these communities, as well as teaching resources. Collectively, the chapters present a diverse, nuanced, and empirically rich picture of the variety of relationships and identities that individuals are creating in the twenty-first century.Trade Review"Altogether an important contribution, Expanding the Rainbow provides not only valuable information but also insight into the lives, relationships, and identities of people who are sexually marginalized." – C. Apt, South Carolina State University, in: CHOICE Magazine "If you want to understand the identities, relationships, and family forms in the contemporary US, you need this book. Too much in the sociology (often unconsciously) treats the terms that define what’s largely considered ‘normal’ as essential to humanity and society: that sex and gender are binaries; that true love occurs only in sexual pairings; that intimate relationships, while usually full of power relations, only work when that power remains invisible; that there’s something wrong with the people who reveal how wrong these assumptions can be. Expanding the Rainbow shows us how the world works from the perspectives of people who are bi/pan+, asexual, polyamorous, intersex, trans, and into BDSM—the very people whose experiences, because they have been marginalized, stand to teach us the most about what it means to relate intimately to others, to form families and communities, to be human." – Dawne Moon, Associate Professor of Sociology and Gender/Sexuality Studies, Marquette University "This book is the urgently needed next step in examining relationships and families, as well as the lives of LGBTIQ+ people. Through theoretical, empirical, and personal pieces, the authors in Expanding the Rainbow push sociological work on ‘the family’ to take seriously types of families that are systematically ignored by researchers. They push us past the mainstream (even normative) profile of ‘same-sex families’: two middle-class white cisgender gay men (sometimes lesbian women) who are married and have 2.5 kids. The text introduces readers to relationships and families that are hardly ever visible in the mainstream, even in this time of ‘marriage equality.’ It also does the important work of pushing us to stop viewing trans and intersex individuals as just ‘individuals,’ as though these members of the LGBTIQ+ community are perpetually single, sexless, and lonely. As a Black queer non-binary person, I’m so happy to finally encounter a book that reflects me, my identities, and my family." – Eric Anthony Grollman, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Richmond "Expanding the Rainbow is a breath of fresh air in the field of sexualities and gender. The current lack of scholarship on bi+, poly, kink, asexual, intersex, and/or trans presents a challenge in the classroom when discussing the intricacies of these relationships and identities. Now, Expanding the Rainbow offers a comprehensive review of the LGBTQQIAP spectrum that´s accessible to academic and non-academic audiences alike. The insightful and deeply personal narratives of members from these diverse communities, including activists and scholars, help readers to better relate to experiences outside their own purview. This timely volume would make a great addition to undergraduate courses addressing sexualities, gender identities, relationships and the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religious affiliation, and nationality." – Mandi Barringer, Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of North Florida "Expanding the Rainbow illuminates complexities of sex, gender, and sexuality that remain largely overlooked and underemphasized within sociology. Editors Brandy L. Simula, J. E. Sumerau, and Andrea Miller begin this volume with great care, introducing readers to the marginalized identities and corresponding terminology that the content showcases: bisexuality, polyamory, kink, asexuality, intersex, and transgender. The ensuing content is carefully curated, featuring the research and personal experiences of established scholars alongside the innovative perspectives of emerging scholars. The diverse standpoints, methods, and theoretical insights of these writers highlight complex hues of the rainbow that many people struggle to see." – Helana Darwin, Doctoral Candidate, Stony Brook University "The collection is an accessible read and useful for readers who want to know more about people on the sexual fringes of society, as it considers a seemingly exhaustive list of sexual orientations and identities. Altogether an important contribution, Expanding the Rainbow provides not only valuable information but also insight into the lives, relationships, and identities of people who are sexually marginalized." – C.
