Taylor & Francis Ltd Collaborative Ethnographic Working in Mental
Book SynopsisCollaborative Ethnographic Working in Mental Health seeks to chart a new direction for research into mental healthcare, with the aim of creating the conditions for more productive interdisciplinary dialogue. People involved in mental health often fail to recognise how they are described by researchers from the humanities and social sciences, which inhibits productive collaboration. This book seeks to address this problem, by including clinicians and patients in the research process and by shifting attention away from power and knowledge and towards the organisational context. It explores how clinical thinking and behaviour, illness experience, and clinical relationships are all shaped by the bureaucratic context. In particular, it examines tensions between what we want from mental healthcare and how accountable bureaucracies actually work, and proposes that mental healthcare research should not just evaluate new interventions but should investigate new ways of organiTrade Review"Each chapter has a clear message and offers conceptual insight unmasked by anthropologists’ usual convoluted prose. The focus on bureaucracy in practice, and its internal effects, has wide implications for clinical research, opening the lid on that which is neglected in usual intervention-focused studies. In this sense, the book is a major cross-disciplinary bridge-building contribution. Indeed, I think the book makes clear in a way that few others have, why ethnographic research is important to getting to the heart of contemporary dilemmas in psychiatric care; especially by taking seriously the everyday experience and representational practices of patients and staff. The book avoids polarising debate around psychiatry, and taking a fresh viewpoint provides a common platform of shared concern about real challenges." -- David Mosse, Professor of Social Anthropology, SOAS, University of London, UK"Dr Armstrong’s incisive analysis of the mental health system challenges complacent and particularised explanations and presents a mature and systemic account of why mental health systems continue to struggle – harm – fail. Sharing his own lived experience of recovery and evolving agency, we see the demise of well-intentioned and highly trained clinicians to serve the structural and bureaucratic agency of the institution, be that the state, the hospital, the prison and criminal justice system. He does this through the powerful stories and voice of the most afflicted, marginalised, and excluded, providing some seminal lessons for practitioners, policy makers, legislators. Although he brings theory into to the analysis, he does so cautiously, never failing to sketch out the limitations of worshipping theory rather than testing it through real world experience and local realities." -- Professor Kamaldeep Bhui, Professor of Psychiatry and Senior Research Fellow, University of Oxford, UK"Each chapter has a clear message and offers conceptual insight unmasked by anthropologists’ usual convoluted prose. Taylor & Francis Surveys In Social Research
Book SynopsisDavid de Vaus' classic text Surveys in Social Research provides clear advice on how to plan, conduct and analyse social surveys. It emphasises the links between theory and research, the logic and interpretation of statistics and the practices of social research. This sixth edition has been completely revised and updated, and contains new examples, data and extensive lists of web resources. As well as explaining how to conduct good surveys, de Vaus shows how to become a critical consumer of research. He argues that the logic of surveys and statistics is simply an extension of the logic we use in everyday life; analysis, however, requires creativity and imagination rather than the application of sterile mechanical procedures. The prime goal of research should be to gain accurate understanding and, as a researcher, use methods and techniques which enhance understanding. De Vaus advocates researchers use the method, rather than letting the method use you.Surveys in Social Research is essential reading for students and researchers working with surveys. It assumes no background in statistical analysis, and gives you the tools you need to come to grips with this often challenging field of work.Trade ReviewPraise for earlier editions of Surveys in Social Research‘This excellent book presents a lucid and comprehensive overview of all the contemporary issues in the development of surveys in social research ... SAGE Publications Inc StandardsBased and Responsive Evaluation
Book SynopsisWe can be grateful that Dr. Stake decided to cap his distinguished career by sharing his ideas in writing. This is a book that evaluators will want to have in their personal library. It tells us a lot about our field, highlights contrasting ways of evaluating without pitting one against the other, and manages to remind us why many of us chose this line of work in the first place.--EVALUATION AND PROGRAM PLANNINGAuthored by a master writer and evaluator, Standards-Based and Responsive Evaluation explores the many conceptual choices an evaluator needs to make when doing an evaluation, devoting attention to stakeholders, weighing ethical risks, and writing a useful report. The book begins with the main strategic choices an evaluator needs to make between approaches: quantitatively,by explicating criteria, needs, standards, and performances, or qualitatively, by studying the activity, aspirations, problems, and accomplishments of the participants and critical observers. After reading the text, students will have a better appreciation of evaluation as a process that needs to be custom-fit to the situation. Throughout the book, Stake presents evaluation as a series of choices for the reader: - To remain independent or to join with program staff or stakeholders- To value personal experience as evidence or to shun it as biased- To aid development formatively or to assess the existing program summatively- To use issues, goals, gains, efficiency, or problem solving as the key conceptual structure- To invest small or large in trying out and validating data-gathering procedures- To support the standards and ethical codes of professional associationsStandards-Based and Responsive Evaluation will prove an essential text for program evaluation courses in education, nursing, social work, psychology, sociology, communication, and anthropology. Experienced researchers and professional evaluators will also find this an invaluable reference for a more experiential, interpretive approach to evaluation work and policy setting.Key Features:- Provides readers with the tools they need to make choices while practicing evaluation- Employs quotations, poetry, and cartoons to help the reader experience the concepts of evaluation - Includes boxed examples from a variety of cases, giving readers the opportunity to compare an actual evaluation situation with one in which they may be engaged- Allows readers to access extensive examples of evaluation reports, coding excerpts, and more, through a complementary Web site appendixTrade ReviewWe can be grateful that Dr. Stake decided to cap his distinguished career by sharing his ideas in writing. SAGE Publications, Inc Fourth Generation Evaluation
Book SynopsisIn Fourth Generation Evaluation, Guba and Lincoln present a strong, unequivocal argument for the epistemological, methodological, and ethical superiority of their refined constructivist inquiry paradigm for the political and practical demands of program evaluation. --Jennifer Greene, Cornell University I would warmly recommend it as stimulating and challenging reading. --Systems Practice I consider Fourth Generation Evaluation to be an exceptionally daring and insightful book. It has done more than most books to further loosen the grip of liberal, instrumental ''common sense'' (i.e., ideology) that has constricted the field of evaluation for the past 30 years. The book's idealism is energizing and must only be matched, as the authors certainly know, by yet more hard-headed analysis. Its radical ambitions are inspiring if not always apparently achievable. However, fair is fair: radical ends demand radical means. --Evaluation Practice Fourth Generation Evaluation represents a monumental shift in evaluation practice. Guba and Lincoln point to the inherent problems faced by previous generations of evaluators--politics, ethical dilemmas, imperfections and gaps, inconclusive deductions--and lay the blame for failure and nonutilization at the feet of the unquestioned reliance on the scientific/positivist paradigm of research. Fourth Generation Evaluation, a more informed and sophisticated approach, moves beyond science to include the myriad human, political, social, cultural, and contextual elements that are involved. Based upon relativism, a unity between knower and known, and a subjective epistemology, the authors show how fourth generation evaluation unites the evaluator and the stakeholders in an interaction that creates the product of the evaluation. Differing from previously existing generations, this new approach moves evaluation to a new level, whose key dynamic is negotiation. The constructivist paradigm is espoused by the authors and shown to offer multiple advantages, including empowerment and enfranchisement of stakeholders, as well as an action orientation that defines a course to be followed. Not merely a treatise on evaluation theory, Guba and Lincoln also comprehensively describe the differences between the positivist and constructivist paradigms of research, and provide a practical plan of the steps and processes in conducting a fourth generation evaluation. This is a book that no evaluator can afford to ignore and an important advance in the study of applied research. Table of ContentsThe Coming of Age of Evaluation What Is Fourth Generation Evaluation? New York University Press Mastering the SemiStructured Interview and Beyond
Book SynopsisMastering the Semi-Structured Interview and Beyond offers an in-depth and captivating step-by-step guide to the use of semi-structured interviews in qualitative research. By tracing the life of an actual research projectan exploration of a school district''s effort over 40 years to address racial equalityas a consistent example threaded across the volume, Anne Galletta shows in concrete terms how readers can approach the planning and execution of their own new research endeavor, and illuminates unexpected real-life challenges they may confront and how to address them. The volume offers a close look at the inductive nature of qualitative research, the use of researcher reflexivity, and the systematic and iterative steps involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. It offers guidance on how to develop an interview protocol, including the arrangement of questions and ways to evoke analytically rich data. Particularly useful for those who may be familiar with qTrade ReviewA beautifully crafted book. Methodologically authoritative and narratively engaging, its comprehensive description of the semi-structured interview introduces established and emerging social scientists to a versatile, informative, inductive qualitative method that too often is treated as if it were methodologically self-evident. Galletta describes how this method can include diverse participants voices, experiences, understandings, and concerns with rigor and rich conceptual and narrative effects. Taylor & Francis The Philosophy of Management Research
Book SynopsisDespite an increasing number of scattered philosophy-based discussions of management research methodology, there has not been a book that provides a systematic and more comprehensive treatment of the subject. This book addresses this gap in the market and provides new ideas and arguments for guiding management researchers.Trade Review‘At a time when empirical social science research is being questioned as never before the timing of this book could not have been better. Professor Eric Tsang assembled a collection of earlier papers and new materials covering every aspect of empirical social science research that guide scholars in their quest to undertake empirical work underlying management research that satisfies criteria of Popperian falsifiability, data transparency, robustness, replication, treatment of outliers and null findings. I strongly recommend this volume for advanced research methodology courses and for all scholars aspiring to undertake empirical social science research consistent with new emphasis on data transparency, replication and falsifiability. ‘— Arie Y. Lewin, Editor in Chief Management and Organization Review, and Professor at Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, U.S.A.'Most PhD programs in management include a major course on research methods or a separate course on the philosophy of science because of its importance for understanding the philosophical underpinnings of research. Until now, however, there was no book that explained the philosophical underpinnings of management research. Eric Tsang in his new book does just that by explaining the philosophical base for the different methodological approaches to management research. In so doing, he examines the nature of assumptions, theory testing, generalization and replication, among other critical issues. This book makes a critical contribution to management research and is an especially valuable addition for scholars who are early in their research careers. It will enrich the research in our field.’ — Michael A. Hitt, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University; Distinguished Research Fellow, Texas Christian University, U.S.A.‘This is a much-needed book for all students and scholars interested in understanding and explaining management and business practices, including decisions and behaviors, at all levels of analysis. It’s not a book about philosophy but a practical treatment of important foundational knowledge of science that all who are claiming or aspiring to be scientists must understand. Questions of what constitutes science, what critical assumptions render some theories valid and some invalid, and why current management research may not qualify as science are addressed. I recommend this as a core text for all research methods courses at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels. I recommend this as a must read for all novice and experienced management and organization researchers. It will help you do better research and be a true scientist, living up to the goal of science, which is to seek true explanations and accurate predictions and to generate useful knowledge to inform policies and improve practices.’ — Anne Tsui, Distinguished Professor of Management at Peking University and Fudan University, China, and Motorola Professor Emerita of International Management at Arizona State University, U.S.A.Table of Contents1. Sage Publications Ltd Qualitative Inquiry in Everyday Life
Book SynopsisThis book is a 'survival guide' for students and researchers who would like to conduct a qualitative study with limited resources. Brinkmann shows how everyday life materials such as books, television, the internet, the media and everyday conversations and interactions can help us to understand larger social issues. As living human beings in cultural worlds, we are constantly surrounded by 'data' that call for analysis, and as we cope with the different situations and episodes of our lives, we are engaged in understanding and interpreting the world as a form of qualitative inquiry. The book helps its reader develop a disciplined and analytic awareness informed by theory, and shows how less can be more in qualitative research. Each chapter introduces theoretical tools to think with, and demonstrates how they can be put to use in working concretely with everyday life materials.Trade ReviewBrinkmann′s text works out of the well-established tradition of everyday life studies and the critical narrative framework developed by Steinar Kvale. It is clearly written, it is accessible, it has good examples and it systematically works through the use and study of self-observations, conversations, media, cinema, and literature Norman DenzinUniversity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Overall, Brinkmann adds a welcome and informative contribution to the existing body of research methods literature. He presents and explains the varying theoretical and practical aspects of carrying out a relatively new and unexplored type of qualitative inquiry-everyday life research. Brinkmann’s arguments are clearly articulated, and where appropriate, often supplemented by commentary on his own personal research experiences, breakdowns of key terms and concepts, and practical exercises/points for reflection. With the exception of a few areas, in which Brinkmann might have expanded the range of issues discussed (relating to ethics), or made some points clearer (on approaches involved in self-observation studies), this book could be considered very readable, accessible, and would make a useful point of reference for students, academics and researchers alike. Emma SmithBook reviews, Methodspace The book could be used interdisciplinary, in different scientific areas - by sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, experts in literature, even the ordinary reader who is interested in a more scientific approach to everyday life events and experiences. Stanislava StoyanovaMethodspace Brinkmann immediately won my interest in his book with his less is more argument... In each chapter, he provides a deeply theoretical analysis of the source and methods of studying it, lightened by an extended illustrative example exploring some aspect of the new experience or expression of guilt and shame... Throughout this book, Brinkmann is drawing on his extensive knowledge of philosophical, psychological and literary sources to argue for and exemplify a style of research that draws on points of breakdown, when everyday expectations aren′t met. This book is not for the faint hearted... This is a book for the serious researcher, one from which, if you are prepared to put in the work to read, study, and apply, you will reap stimulating ideas and rich intellectual rewards. Pat BazeleyBooks Reviews, Methodspace Brinkmann successfully achieves ‘conceptual audacity’ in his text. It comes across as multilayered, rich in description, and analysis, while at the same time providing a valuable stock of qualitative theory, and useful examples. Cambridge University Press External Validity and Evidence Accumulation
Book SynopsisThe accumulation of empirical evidence that has been collected in multiple contexts, places, and times requires a more comprehensive understanding of empirical research than is typically required for interpreting the findings from individual studies. We advance a novel conceptual framework where causal mechanisms are central to characterizing social phenomena that transcend context, place, or time. We distinguish various concepts of external validity, all of which characterize the relationship between the effects produced by mechanisms in different settings. Approaches to evidence accumulation require careful consideration of cross-study features, including theoretical considerations that link constituent studies and measurement considerations about how phenomena are quantifed. Our main theoretical contribution is developing uniting principles that constitute the qualitative and quantitative assumptions that form the basis for a quantitative relationship between constituent studies. We then apply our framework to three approaches to studying general social phenomena: meta-analysis, replication, and extrapolation.

Cambridge University Press Inside Parties
Book SynopsisWhile extensive research examines electoral systems and institutions at the country-level, few studies investigate rules within parties. Inside Parties changes the research landscape by systematically examining 65 parties in 20 parliamentary democracies around the world. Georgia Kernell develops a formal model of party membership and tests the hypotheses using cross-national surveys, member studies, experiments, and computer simulations of projected vote shares. She finds that a party''s level of decentralization ? the degree to which it incorporates rank and file members into decision making ? determines which voters it best represents. Decentralized parties may attract more members to campaign for the party, but they do so at the cost of adopting more extreme positions that pull them away from moderate voters. Novel and comprehensive, Inside Parties is an indispensable study of how parties select candidates, nominate leaders, and set policy goals.

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Peoples Book of Human Sexuality
Book SynopsisThis collection aims to fill in the deep gaps of vital contributions that have been erased from the sexuality field, illuminating the historical and current work, strategies, solutions, and thoughts from sexologists that have been excluded until now. Historically, the US sexuality field has not included the experiences and wisdom of racialized sexologists, educators, therapists, or professionals. Instead, sexuality professionals have been trained using a color-free narrative that does an injustice by excluding their work as well as failing to offer a fuller examination of how they have expanded the field and held it accountable. The result of this wholesale erasure is that today many sexuality professionals understand these contributions as extra or tangential, and not part of the full vision and history of the field of sexology. Highlighting the voices and experiences of those who have been racialized and thus excluded, isolated, erased, and yet have still emerged as vital cTrade Review"The People’s Book of Human Sexuality: Expanding the Sexology Archive offers us a compelling narrative and strategy for leading and engaging in inclusive conversations. Professor Julie Hodges, Professor in Management, Durham University Business School 'This book provides a timely and highly useful companion for executive students grappling with the challenge of analysing complex case data on their postgraduate programmes. Chris Williams has extensive experience in lecturing our students at all levels of business education, and he clearly stands out in case-based teaching. Great that his experience and method are now available to everyone by this publication. I would highly recommend engaging with this book before and during a significant case analysis module.' Professor Mark van der Veen, Director of the Amsterdam Graduate School of Business, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam 'This book fills a massive gap in the business and management literature, providing excellent guidance on how to analyse cases that will benefit students, academics and consultants. Cases form a key part of education in business and management; yet there has not been, until now, a book that clearly sets out the various ways that exist to analyse and then create career impact from them. Taylor & Francis Ltd Constructivism and the Metaphysics of Qualitative
Book SynopsisThis book challenges the widespread assumption that a necessary preliminary to qualitative research is the formulation of ontological and epistemological beliefs. It argues that the metaphysical claims which supposedly underpin different approaches to social research do not make sense. Literally. Sentences such as There is a single objective reality' and There are multiple constructed realities' fail to make information-providing statements. They do not refer or describe. Despite appearances, they say nothing about reality (or realities) at a fundamental level, so they cannot be used to justify, ground, or align with, methodological decisions. Taylor & Francis Ltd Models for NonModelers
Book SynopsisModels for Non-Modelers focuses not on how to design models but on how to understand and critically appraise them.
