Book SynopsisSeven Chakras of Leadership is a transformative guide for leaders seeking to align their inner energy with their professional impact. It connects ancient wisdom with modern leadership science, offering a powerful framework for navigating the complexities of todayâs workplace while staying grounded in authenticity and purpose. At the bookâs core is the concept of The Journeyâa practice inspired by shamanism, inviting leaders to explore their inner world and align their energy centers, or chakras, to unlock their fullest leadership potential. The authors provide actionable tools rooted in ancient traditionsâsuch as meditation, breathwork, energy healing, and chakra alignmentâtailored to the demands of modern leadership. Using the chakra system as a framework, the book maps each chakra (root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown) to critical aspects of leadership development. By linking chakra principles to evidence-based practices such as emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and transformational leadership, leaders will gain practical insights into how balancing their energy centers can enhance decision-making, foster resilience, and improve team dynamics. Addressing both the empowering and shadow aspects of these energy centers, the book equips leaders with practical tools, reflective exercises, and action steps to navigate challenges, build self-awareness, and drive meaningful transformation in their organizations. With templates for energy management and chakra assessment, whether youâre a corporate executive, manager, or entrepreneur, this book equips you with practical strategies to balance your inner compass and develop conscious, compassionate leadership.

  • Taylor & Francis A Curriculum of Courage Conviction Resolve

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe world is periodically consumed in violence, in recent years by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hamasâ October 7th terrorism in Israel, and by the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by Israelis in response. To this world-historical situation, this book attempts a curriculum studies response. Drawing on foundational texts from Hongyu Wang, James B. Burns, Christopher Cruz, and Molly Quinn, as well as his own work on violence, Pinar considers nonviolence as a counterpart to the many forms of violence - specifically gendered and racialized violence, including when the two are intertwined, but also in decolonization, imperialism, colonialism, as well as in classrooms â that are ever present in our modern world.Throughout the chapters, Pinar knits together fragments of scholarly thought on nonviolence and presents a rich and at times deeply personal study of the concepts, to create a curriculum from which students can study the absurdity of the human condition: how humanity requires nonviolence to flourish, but is too often drowned out by manâs inhumanity to man. This essential work in curriculum theory will inform researchers and students of curriculum theory, peace studies, justice studies, and authoritarianism.

Book SynopsisBahá'í Faith: The Basics provides a thorough and accessible introduction to a fascinating, independent world religion. Examining its historical development, current community-building efforts and the social contributions of the Bahá'í Faith in the world today, this introduction covers: Beliefs: Bahá'í spiritual teachings Principles: Bahá'í social teachings History: Bahá'u'lláh and his covenant. Scripture: Bahá'í sacred texts and inspired guidance Institutions: The Bahá'í Administrative Order Building community: What Bahá'ís do Social action: Bahá'í social and economic development projects Public discourse: The Bahá'í International Community Vision: Foundations for a future golden age With features including a glossary of terms, and references to the Bahá'í writings throughout, this is the ideal text for students and interested readers wanting to familiarize themselves with the Bahá'í FaitTrade Review"The activities, focus, and concepts in the Baha’i world are changing so rapidly at present, especially in the area of developing new approaches to community building, that any published introductory book soon becomes out-of-date. So it is good to see another introductory book on the Baha’i Faith published, in particular since it surveys recent developments well. For anyone wishing to find out about the Baha’i Faith and the current activities of the Baha’i community, this book can be recommended. Christopher Buck presents an insider view of the Baha’i Faith, but one that is descriptive rather than prescriptive. … Buck presents all of this information in a clear and well-structured manner. He accompanies his own words with appropriate extracts from authoritative Baha’i texts to illustrate the points that he is making. He also draws on examples of the activities of the Baha’i community from different locations across the world. … In summary, there are a good many introductory books on the market but this one can be recommended for two reasons. First, it is well-written and as reasonably comprehensive as such brief introductory books can hope to be. Second, it is up-to-date covering many of the recent changes in the Baha’i community that older similar books do not."Moojan Momen, Nova Religio, Vol. 25, No. 3 (February 2022), pp. 137-138, USA."This excellent, beautifully organized introduction provides an accurate and unusually rich entré into a relatively new and still somehow frequently misunderstood religion. The author, Christopher Buck, is a leading scholar of the Baha'i religion. His book is richly enhanced with quotations from official translations of the Baha'i sacred writings, insights into the formation of distinctive Baha'i institutions and rare glimpses of key moments in Baha'i intellectual history from an introduction to the influential African-American Baha'i philosopher, Alain Locke (d. 1954) known as 'the father of the Harlem Renaissance', to a discussion of the more recent development of the Ruhi Institute process. This introduction goes beyond existing textbooks in both scope and detail. It will be warmly welcomed by researchers and students of the Baha'i Faith." Todd Lawson, University of Toronto, Canada"One outstanding feature of this book for either Bahá’ís or non-Bahá’ís is its contemporary relevance. Even well-informed readers could not possibly be fully aware of the overview presented by Buck of all the multifarious activities taking place in the Bahá’í world community. … Buck’s treatment of the material is throughout well-researched, and rich in the detail that an alert reader expects. In sum, despite its unpretentious title, this book is more than the Basics of the Bahá’í Faith. It not only covers well the religion’s early history, three central holy figures, spiritual and social teachings and organization, but also it presents a complete contemporary picture of the remarkably diverse economic, social, and spiritual activities that are being planned and executed by the Bahá’í community in all countries of the world."Jack McLean, author of Revisioning the Sacred: New Perspectives on a Bahá’í Theology"This book is a trove of insights and perspectives that will inform both the reader who is unfamiliar with the Baha’i universe and the practitioner who seeks information and inspiration. What’s more, this book will be a good resource for all fundamental aspects of the Baha’i religion and in the concert of diverse religions and spiritualities today. One should not miss its unique message to humanity."Roland Faber Kilsby Family/John B. Cobb Jr. Professor of Process Studies at Claremont School of Theology, USA. Reading Religion "The most important contribution of this work to the literature on the Baha’i Faith consists of its focus on current Baha’i community life and its description of core activities which include devotional meetings, children’s classes, junior youth groups, and adult study circles, even describing the current curriculum being used for those activities. Attention is given as well to social and economic development projects and Baha’i participation in public discourse, all elements not covered in previous introductory material. In other words, this text focuses much more broadly on what Baha’is do, rather than simply what they believe. … This text serves as a good up-to-date presentation of current Baha’i beliefs and practices." Taylor & Francis The Bible The Basics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Bible: The Basics is an accessible and engaging introduction to the Bible as both a sacred text, central to the faith of millions, and a classic work of Western literature, containing a tapestry of genres, voices, perspectives, and images. This guide skilfully addresses both aspects of the Bibleâs character by exploring: the rich variety of literary forms, from poetry to prophecy and epistles to apocalypses; the historical, geographic, and social context of the Bible; contemporary attitudes to the Bible held by believers and non-believers; the status of biblical interpretation today. The second edition has been updated throughout and includes maps and detailed suggestions for further reading. This is an ideal starting point for people of any faith, or none, who are studying the Bible in any setting or who simply want to know more about the best-selliTrade Review"This book draws on the author’s lifetime of experience in Biblical Studies to introduce in clear and simple terms some of the complex ideas and debates that have shaped the field in recent times. It succinctly introduces both the nature and background of the biblical text, making this an ideal book for anyone who wants to explore the Bible in more depth. Professor Barton understands how to read the Bible from both scholarly and faith-based perspectives, and students from many backgrounds will find this a stimulating and useful read." - Andrew Village, York St John University, UK"Barton manages to address heavy-weight topics with great care and clarity that can easily be approached by both academic students or interested readers. I highly recommend this second edition." - Kirsi Cobb, Cliff College, UK"This second edition of Barton’s introduction succeeds in introducing the reader to the pitfalls and neuralgic points of current Biblical studies. It functions as an invitation to read the Bible [...] while, at the same time, encouraging one to ask how its future readers will resolve its many conundrums. It is hoped that many people read this book with an aim towards testing their preconceptions and general knowledge of the biblical text."- Philipp Reisner, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany, Reading ReligionTable of ContentsList of figures. Book SynopsisChristian and Islamic sermons from past and present, and their preachers, are analyzed to reveal the socio-cultural dynamics of religious speeches. Part I focuses on the explicit contribution of sermons in socio-cultural transformation processes. It shows how sermons connect with holy texts, religious norms of the specific group, and social-cultural contexts. Part II analyzes the dynamic tension between normativity and popularity. Rather than juxtaposing normative stances and the popularity of sermons, it shows how that normativity can itself contribute to popularity and the quest of popularity carries its own normative stances. Part III explores the ritual embeddedness of religious speech in the sermon in relation to social dynamics, normativity, and popularity, and shows how speech and rituals have a reciprocal relationship.

Book SynopsisA 73rd National Jewish Book Awards Winner - Contemporary Jewish Life & Practice Open the Bible, and disability is everywhere. Moses stutters and thinks himself unable to answer God''s call. Isaac''s blindness lets his wife trick him into bestowing his blessing on his younger son. Jesus heals the sick the blind, the paralyzed, and the possessed. For centuries, these stories have been told and retold by commentators who treat disability as misfortune, as a metaphor for spiritual incapacity, or as a challenge to be overcome.Loving Our Own Bones turns that perspective on its head. Drawing insights from the hard-won wisdom of disabled folks who''ve forged difference into fierce and luminous cultural dissent, Belser offers fresh and unexpected readings of familiar biblical stories, showing how disability wisdom can guide us all toward a powerful reckoning with the complexities of the flesh. Book SynopsisIn 1992, Eamon Duffy created a sensation in Reformation studies by publishing his groundbreaking book The Stripping of the Altars. In it he demonstrated the health of late medieval religion in England and that the thesis hitherto accepted that the Reformation came to wipe away a corrupt and rotten Church was essentially false. In this book follow-up to The Stripping of the Altars, Duffy makes further soundings in late medieval religion, but drills down to the particular and avoids any wide historical sweep. Among the topics he covers are Purgatory, The Black Death, Adoration of the Mother of God, and Heresy. By his meticulous research, Duffy has discovered many original documents and records during his academic career, proving that his thesis about the Reformation is basically irrefutable. This book is illustrated by a small collection of full color plates which further demonstrate the richness of late medieval religion.Trade ReviewIt is 26 years since Eamon Duffy changed the way that readers of history looked at England on the eve of the Reformation, through his The Stripping of the Altars. Many of the essays here also challenge easy assumptions. All of them are written with a clarity and fluency, humour and humanity that make reading them a pleasure. -- Christopher Howse * Daily Telegraph *Erudite but never unapproachable and laced with a dry wit, [Duffy's] essays are essential reading for those with an interest in how people in the past expressed their faith * Sunday Times *Tremendous … This is a book for the general reader , spiced throughout with Duffy’s profound scholarly understanding of the giant subjects with which each essay grapples * Church Times *[Duffy's] extraordinary depth of knowledge is, throughout these essays, lit for his reader by his sense not of what medieval Christians thought but of what they believed, felt, feared, and, above all, did ... 2 in stock

Book SynopsisA timely, courageous and powerful novel about faith, the church, conscience and celibacy.Trade ReviewThe force and resonance of the issue in question - together with Keneally's wise and thoughtful treatment of it - make for another hugely satisfying read from one of the world's great writers. -- James Walton * Spectator *A provocative and powerful study of abusers and the abused. It captures the honourable priests determined to expose the outrage and the church hierarchy equally determined to discredit them. Most poignantly, it depicts ordinary Catholics caught in the crossfire . . . The writing is most powerful when it conveys the raw pain of the victims and the twisted psyches of their abusers . . . Above all, Keneally exposes the cynical casuistry of a church determined to fight critics down to "its last lawyer", an institution that puts its survival above its soul. -- Michael Arditti * Guardian *Characteristically brave and unflinching . . .Keneally's theme is sadly familiar, but in the hands of a world-renowned writer - still, on this evidence, at the height of his powers, and with a long record of shining a light on human frailty and injustice - Crimes of the Father goes way beyond the familiar. It questions what makes a good priest and, therefore, what makes a bad one. And that, Keneally concludes, isn't only to do with individual make-up, circumstances or choices, but also down to institutional Catholicism and "emotional dwarfism" . -- Peter Stanford * Observer *A compelling novel . . . One of the strengths of the novel is Keneally's depiction of the abuser. A chilling portrait is drawn of a man who despises his own actions . . . but who nevertheless seems incapable of stopping. The scenes between him and Docherty, who has uncovered the truth, are compulsive . . . Keneally is one of the great chroniclers of his country's history . . . Here he recognises the injustices done to his fellow countrymen and women by an uncaring establishment . . . to the growing body of work devoted to this most dispiriting of subject, Crimes of the Father is a welcome addition, not least for the dignity that Keneally lends to the good priest's voice as well as to those of the victims of abuse. -- John Boyne * Irish Times *A convincing argument for the power of fiction to get under the skin of a great contemporary controversy. -- James Marriott * The Times *The divine alchemy of Thomas Keneally is to take something real and make it truer still . . .Docherty is a powerful creation . . . Keneally explores the human condition almost forensically, though with an uplifting charity . . . he is extraordinarily perceptive on the pain of both the victims and those in the Church who have watched these scandals unfold with horror . . . the novel points to the pain of those who trusted and who were abused, those who gave faith and were rewarded in the coin of unspeakable criminality. It also offers the merest glint of optimism. -- Hugh MacDonald * The Herald *Pulsing with rage at ecclesiastical complacency, it's a deeply discomfiting (but never prurient) quest for redress, narrated with clarity and urgency. -- Anthony Cummins * Daily Mail *Keneally is a superb writer who tackles a complex subject calmly but incisively, creating a compelling read. * Choice *Crimes of the Father has something of the feel of John Grisham's courtroom thrillers . . . It is not an easy read, but nor should it be . . . it is a worthwhile attempt to explore how a devoted priest with a clear understanding of humanity can if not atone for, then at least fully address, the crimes of others. -- Matt Thorne * Catholic Herald *Keneally's fiction has returned again and again to the themes of thwarted justice and human opportunism. Crimes of the Father is the work of a richly experienced and compassionate writer. It has an honest understanding of a deeply wounded culture. * Sydney Morning Herald *It turns Catholicism from a matter of interest to insiders and the curious to a febrile topic for the general public . . . Apart from the fictional pleasures of the chase, the novel provides a first-rate summary of the thinking and manoeuvres of all parties caught up in the crisis. * Australian *Nuanced and relevant . . . an excellent example of fiction's capacity to pull apart and explore polarising contemporary problems. * BMA Magazine, Canberra *

A unique glimpse into the history of early-modern religious thought, this reference work includes extensive articles on the various collections of believers both Christian and non-Christian. Blunt, in a move that presaged the more comprehensive modern studies of the phenomenon of religious diversification, included exotic religions that were beginning to be taken seriously during his century.

Book SynopsisDiscover How Tagore’s Spiritual Life and Vision Can Enlighten Your Own "Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophical and spiritual thoughts transcend all limits of language, culture, and nationality. In his writings, the poet and mystic takes us on a spiritual quest and gives us a glimpse of the infinite in the midst of the finite, unity at the heart of all diversity, and the Divine in all beings and things of the universe." —from the Preface bySwami Adiswarananda Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most influential mystic poets and teachers of the last century. Deeply spiritual and profoundly sensitive, his verse speaks to people from all backgrounds who seek a deeper understanding of self, country, creation, God, and love. This beautiful sampling of Tagore’s two most important works, The Gardener and Gitanjali, offers a glimpse into his spiritual vision that has inspired people around the world. Poems from The Gardener explore youth and earthly love, while excerpts from Gitanjali express divine love and Tagore’s difficulty in satisfying it. Overwhelmingly mystical and lovely in its simplicity, this unique collection offers insight into Tagore’s heavenly desires, his ongoing quest for Brahama Vihara, the joy eternal, and illuminates the remarkable diversity that made him the most important bridge between the spirituality of the East and West in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book SynopsisAlthough parts of the Western world now appear almost totally secularised, Christianity remains the most potent worldview on earth alongside Islam. In this compelling book, Rupert Shortt gracefully argues that Christianity is a much more coherent, progressive body of belief - philosophically, scientifically and culturally - than often supposed by its critics. Alert to the menace posed by religious fundamentalism, as well as to secularist blind spots, he shows how a self-critical faith is of huge consequence to wider human flourishing, including through promoting peace and environmental sustainability

Book SynopsisNew Age and holistic beliefs and practices - sometimes called the "new spirituality" - are widely distributed across modern global society. The fluid and popular nature of new age makes these movements a very challenging field to understand using traditional models of religious analysis. Rather than treating new age as an exotic specimen on the margins of 'proper' religion, "New Age Spirituality" examines these movements as a form of everyday or lived religion. The book brings together an international range of scholars to explore the key issues: insight, healing, divination, meditation, gnosis, extraordinary experiences, and interactions with gods, spirits and superhuman powers. Combining discussion of contemporary beliefs and practices with cutting-edge theoretical analysis, the book repositions new age spirituality at the forefront of the contemporary study of religion.Trade Review"The book moves the study of new age from the margins of the comparative study of religion. It resists the claim that religion must be institutional, yet similarly resists the idea that diffuse and individualistic phenomena, like new age, lack social and historical dimensions. New age - examined methodologically and discovered in rich empirical data - is revealed as religion, not fringe but central." - Carole M. Cusack, University of Sydney "Acumen Publishing continues to lead the way in the academic study of the overlapping fields of paganism, occultism, and New Age with this new collection - By treating New Age as 'core' or 'elementary' religion and by linking contemporary studies of New Age to classic literature on religion, the book has the potential to open new avenues of analysis and critique in anthropology." - Anthropology Review DatabaseTable of ContentsIntroduction: 'All mixed up': thinking about religion in relation to new age spiritualities, Ingvild Salid Gilhus and Steven J. Book SynopsisDavid is one of the principal characters of our Bible. HIs name is mentioned over 1000 times in Scripture, and it is the most referenced name in the Bible. In the New Testament, his name comes immediately after that of the Lord Jesus: "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David" (Matt 1.1). Interestingly, David is also the second last name in the New Testament: "I am the root and offspring of David...the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen" (Rev 22.16-21). In other words, David is a character who seems to shadow our blessed Lord, and his life is full of meaning and lessons for all believers. The emphasis of this character study is not so much in re-telling David''s story, although some of that has been necessary, but rather in considering the lessons we can learn from the life of David for our lives today. Therefore, this book is devotional and practical in nature, rather than being expository. Thirteen of the titles of the 75 psalms of David share details of their settings, and these 13 psalms are all arranged chronologically in this book, after each chapter, without commentary, and after the relevant setting for each psalm has been discussed. If there is no psalm that we are aware of being written in the period under consideration, then a psalm has been selected that is relevant. It is hoped that the simple reading of the psalm in its context will prove to be a selah moment of deeper reflection upon the Word of God and appreciation of our God.
