Book SynopsisFirst Published in 1999. The purpose of this series is to provide a contemporary assessment and history of the entire course of philosophical thought. Each book constitutes a detailed, critical introduction to the work of a philosopher of major influence and significance. Understanding a philosophical doctrine stands close to seeing its strengths and weaknesses, how best it could be defended and how best attacked. The author therefore has tried, not merely to state Russell's philosophical doctrines, but also to appraise them: to determine, if possible, whether they are true, or at least what arguments tell in their favour, and what tell against them.Table of ContentsKnowledge VII Ontology VIII Mathematics

  • Religion in China

Book SynopsisIn recent years, there has been an astonishing revival of religious practices in China. Looking beyond numerical counts of religious practitioners, temples, and churches, anthropologist Adam Yuet Chau's vivid study explores how religion is embedded in contemporary Chinese lives and society, from personal devotion to community-wide festivals. Covering Buddhism, Daoism, and folk religion, as well as Christianity and Islam, this ethnographically rich book provides insights into the contemporary relevance of religious traditions in Chinese societies. By considering the ways in which Chinese people do' religion, Chau reveals how religious practice plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining a wide range of relationships: between people, spirits, and places; ritual service providers and their customers; the state and religious groups. He argues that relationality is the key anchor of religious lifeworlds, and this insight demands an entirely new way of approaching religion everywhere. This lively account will appeal to those studying or curious about Chinese or East Asian religions, and serves as a perfect gateway to understanding religious practices in China today.Trade Review"A wonderfully lucid and readable introduction to Chinese religious practices. Chau invites the reader to look at how Chinese people 'do' religion and presents an astonishingly wide spectrum of religious activities. A real treat!"—Peter van der Veer, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity "In this highly readable survey of popular religiosity in contemporary China, Chau clears the path to understanding religion not through the frequently superimposed categories of scripture and faiths, but through the effervescent and solemn ways in which Chinese 'do' religion."—Prasenjit Duara, Duke University "[A] rich recourse for both teaching and research on Chinese religion in years to come."—H-Net: Humanities and Social Sciences Reviews Online "Chau provides a fresh lens for understanding religious dynamics in China that […] focuses on the important social function of religion, regardless of confessional differences, in shaping and reshaping Chinese society. An excellent piece of serious academic work that opens new doors for the study of Chinese religion. It should not be missed by serious students of the field."—Pacific Affairs "[A]n immense success: Chau has an undeniable talent for ethnography and because of this is able to weave various narratives pertaining to lived religious experience in China that are certain to make the reader wish to delve deeper."—Religious Studies ReviewTable of ContentsMap Chronology Acknowledgements Notes on Orthography and Pronunciation Introduction: Relationality at the Heart of Religion in China 1. • Essay on the Life and Manners of Robert

Catholic Record Society Essay on the Life and Manners of Robert

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPhilip Perry's Essay on the Life and Manners of the Venerable Robert Grosseteste presents us not only with a high standard of biographical scholarship but also a fine example of English eighteenth-century polemical writing. Grosseteste was a formidable thirteenth-century bishop of Lincoln who, because of his insistence upon the primacy of Scripture and his apparent wrangling with the papacy, had long been claimed as a type of proto-Protestant in the English post-Reformation historical tradition. Perry sets out in his Essay a vivid account of Grosseteste's life and achievements to advance his cause as a worthy saint and to recover his reputation as a loyal son of the Roman Church. His frank discussion of the abuses that Grosseteste opposed and the controversies in which he engaged put his text beyond the limits of what a Catholic priest could advisably print in eighteenth-century England. The manuscript remained unpublished for fear of causing scandal, and now sees its first printed edition.

Book SynopsisThis book challenges the popular use of âValentinianâ to describe a Christian school of thought in the second century CE by analysing documents ascribed to âValentiniansâ by early Christian Apologists, and more recently by modern scholars after the discovery of codices near Nag Hammadi in Egypt. To this end, Ashwin-Siejkowski highlights the great diversity of views among Christian theologians associated with the label âValentinianâ, demonstrating their attachment to the Scriptures and Apostolic traditions as well as their dialogue with Graeco-Roman philosophies of their time. Among the various themes explored are âmythâ and its role in early Christian theology, the familiarity of the Gospel of Truth with Alexandrian exegetical tradition, Ptolemyâs didactic in his letter to Flora, the image of the Saviour in the Interpretation of Knowledge, reception of the Johannine motifs in Heracleonâs commentary and the Tripartite Tractate, salvation in the Excerpts

Taylor & Francis Ltd Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOccultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis traces the origins of key psychoanalytic ideas back to their roots in hypnosis and the occult. Maria Pierri follows Freud’s early interest in ‘thought-transmission’, now known as telepathy. Trade Review"This book gives back to contemporary psychoanalysis the pleasure of exploring really little-known territories, fascinatingly restoring the connection between the past, present and "elsewhere" of communications between human beings, using the Freudian experience as its starting point, in order to reconsider in a reflective way the less visible, sometimes disorienting and mysterious levels of psychoanalytic practice. offers us an especially valuable reflection on the mysterious communicating paths which put individual and group unconsciouses in contact with each other, often bypassing in an apparently disconcerting manner the border controls." - Stefano Bolognini, past President of the IPA and the Italian Psychoanalytic Society"Following the thread of thought-transference, Maria Pierri goes through the events of the Freudian endeavour starting from its roots in hypnosis and occultism, through the dialogue with the masters, the pupils and the great female patients, the leading actresses of the cure. In his disquieting curiosity for telepathy, which he shared intimately with Ferenczi, Freud discovers that fortune-tellers, who do not know the future, can read the unconscious of their clients. But the "golden coin" of occultism, the generative mother-child communication, will be the great discovery of Ferenczi." - Luis J. Martin Cabré, Training analyst, past President Madrid Psychoanalytical Association."Today we know much about the polyphonic complex of contexts, experiences, relationships and ideas which made psychoanalysis possible and still nourish its current debates. We can be very grateful to Maria Pierri for bringing us up to date with the role and meaning of some little-known aspects of Freud’s life and work concerning occultism and the fascinating dialogue of the unconsciouses developed with Ferenczi: what the Author identifies as one of the matrices of the developments of contemporary psychoanalysis." - Marco Conci, MC, IPA Committee on the History of Psychoanalysis"This book gives back to contemporary psychoanalysis the pleasure of exploring really little-known territories, fascinatingly restoring the connection between the past, present and 'elsewhere' of communications between human beings, using the Freudian experience as its starting point, in order to reconsider in a reflective way the less visible, sometimes disorienting and mysterious levels of psychoanalytic practice. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisSkilful communication and warm connection are needed today more than ever before. This book explores the potential of mindfulness skills, and how they can be applied to communication in a range of settings. Experienced mindfulness teachers and trainers Frits Koster, Jetty Heynekamp and Victoria Norton provide an outline of the mechanisms underlying mindful communication while a selection of experts presents a concise overview of six communication programs that are becoming well-known in the mindfulness world. They describe the background and structure of each course and offer tasters in the form of short exercises and online audio downloads. Each chapter is followed up by further resources, reading lists and web addresses. Mindful Communication will be of interest to professionals in mental health, social care, education and to anyone who wishes to listen and speak with more wisdom and compassion.Trade Review‘I am delighted to recommend this valuable collection of teachings on mindful communication. If there is one thing to be learned during these times of great disruption it is that the key to resilient relationships and societies lies in our capacity for authentic dialogue. This is an essential need that all human beings share … to be recognized, valued and affirmed in our fundamental goodness. Yet, in this age of disembodied social media, while chats go on all the time, we are often left feeling more isolated and discouraged. Thank goodness there is a rise of interest in mindfulness, compassion and now these specific instructions about how to open our hearts and minds with each other in genuine communication. Thank you Frits, Jetty and Victoria and to all the authors! I am confident this book will benefit countless people.’Susan Gillis Chapman is a retired Family Therapist, Dharma-teacher, author of The Five Keys To Mindful Communication (2012) and Founder of Green Zone Communication.‘It is wonderful that Frits Koster, Jetty Heynekamp and Victoria Norton have edited this excellent and very timely book on Mindful Communication. In our digital, disembodied and stressful world, where it’s hard to know whom to trust and to find the time for deeper and more meaningful communication, this book has been sorely needed. Now at last we have a practical guide on how to take things deeper and further with one another. With so many people already familiar with mindfulness practices, at least in principal, this invaluable guide can help us all to take some next important steps on the journey.’Michael Chaskalson, MA, author of Mindfulness in Eight Weeks (2014) and co-author (with Dr. Megan Reitz) of Mind Time (2018). Professor of Practice adjunct at Hult International Business School (Ashridge) and Associate at the Møller Institute, Churchill College in the University of Cambridge.‘This is a treasure trove of wisdom from a diversity of teachers sharing a diversity of approaches, held together by a common aspiration to enable us all to cultivate our skills in communicating mindfully. As a species we deeply need wise guidance on how we can integrate compassion and care into our social and relational networks. Let’s share this book widely and put into practice the wisdom it offers us!’Rebecca Crane, PhD, Director, Professor, Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, Bangor University, UK, author of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (2017) and editing author (with Karunavira and Gemma Griffith) of Essential Resources for Mindfulness Teachers (2021).‘We are born without our consent or choice, created by DNA, with minds that are responsible for the most amazing compassion but also for the most sadistic cruel and terrifying actions. Despite appeals by many of the contemplative traditions that it is essential we understand the nature of our mind and take responsibility for what they do, it has only been in the last few decades that western science and education have started to explore this as a serious possibility. For too long we have been left ignorant of our minds and vulnerable to the suffering of mental health problems, selfish and anti-social behaviour. However, within schools and workplaces and the flourishing of internet based self-training, this is beginning to change. It is therefore a delight, a pleasure and excitement to be able to recommend this wonderfully insightful and practical book that lays out some of the key challenges and opportunities for mindful awareness and compassionate action training. Bringing together some of the top international contributors in the mind training world, I for one will be referring to this book for many years to come and I'm sure others will too.’Paul Gilbert, OBE, Professor, author of Compassion Focused Therapy (2010b), co-author (with Choden) of Mindful Compassion (2015) and co-editor (with Gregoris Simos) of Compassion Focused Therapy: Clinical Practice and Applications (2022).‘We all want good relationships at home and at work, but that’s often challenging. Relationships are built from interactions, and interactions are built from communications. The authors of this ground-breaking book show us many ways to communicate honestly and effectively, even during emotionally intense conflicts. With many examples, they bring together the power of mindfulness, deep listening, compassion, and skillful assertiveness. Written with great clarity and depth, this is an excellent guidebook to harmonious, fulfilling, and productive relationships.’Rick Hanson, PhD, Senior Fellow of UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center, author of Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness (2018) and other books on positive neuroplasticity.‘This wonderful book explores the art of human communication and connection, and in doing so, takes us to the heart of what our minds most need for healing, growth, and for facing the challenges of daily life.’Charlie Heriot-Maitland, PhD, DClinPsy, Clinical Psychologist and Director of Balanced Minds, and co-author (with Eleanor Longden) of Relating to Voices using Compassion Focused Therapy (2022).‘This book teaches us interpersonal meditative skills, based on both ancient techniques and modern science to foster our ability to reconnect to others, which seems crucial in these times of polarization, me-first and us-against-them attitudes.’Rogier Hoenders, MD, PhD, psychiatrist, director of the Center for Integrative Psychiatry, Lentis, Groningen and chair of the Dutch consortium for integrative medicine and health.‘If you want to cultivate wisdom and compassion in your relationships, this book offers an accessible and practical guide to getting started. An inspiring collection of six different approaches to becoming a better listener and a more authentic speaker, I highly recommend this book to anyone who values being truly present with those they care about. In a world riddled with conflict and in our day-to-day challenges of living, our shared humanity depends on our collective ability to connect deeply with each other. This book shows you how, so let it be your next step towards mastering the art of mindful communication.’Mark Hopfenbeck is social anthropologist specialising in health and social policy, an assistant professor (and mindfulness teacher) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), visiting fellow at London South Bank University (LSBU) and individual partner at the Collaborating Centre for Values-based Practice in Health and Social Care, St Catherine’s College, Oxford University. He is the co-editor of The Practical Handbook of Hearing Voices (with Isla Parker and Joachim Schnackenberg, 2021), The Practical Handbook of Eating Difficulties (with James Downs et al., 2022) and The Practical Handbook of Living Well with Dementia (with Isla Parker and Richard Coaten, 2022).‘A quality that defines humanity is our capacity for complex communication. But in today’s modern world how we communicate with each other has transformed, and not necessarily for the better. We have almost forgotten what it means to be with, listen and share. In this comprehensive book editors Koster, Heynekamp, and Norton present six mindful communication programmes that ground us in these most fundamental human qualities of connection and communication. If you want to improve your communication and how you connect with others, this book is a must have.’James Kirby, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, Co-Director of the Compassionate Mind Research Group, School of Psychology, The University of Queensland, Australia.‘This book lets the diamond of mindful communication shine, from various perspectives. A valuable resource to create better human communication.’Wibo Koole, director of Centrum voor Mindfulness, The Netherlands and author of Mindful Leadership (2014).‘We are a social species – historically our survival depended on being part of a group. We need friendship, good relationships, and love; they are associated with good health. In contrast loneliness and chronic conflict are toxic, associated with many poor health outcomes. This edited collection of original essays draws on ancient wisdom and modern psychology to provide a fresh, engaging and eminently practical set of ideas and tools. It provides a way to realise a vision of the world in which connection, good communication, and, yes love, will enable us to meet the challenges of the next fifty years. This is no surprise given the authors’ commitment over many years to developing these ideas through deep professional and personal experience, and first and foremost an embodiment of the ideas they extol. It is a stepwise development for the field, applying what we know about mindfulness to communication.’Willem Kuyken, Ritblat Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science, University of Oxford and co-author (with Christina Feldman) of Mindfulness: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Psychology (2019).‘May this book allow many to see clearly and live with awareness of awakening together.’Florence Meleo-Meyer, Assistant Professor of the Practice, Program Director, Global Relations and Professional Education, Mindfulness Center, Brown University School of Public Health, USA.‘As social beings, people have a deep need to connect with each other. But communicating can be both healing and harming. This book explores how mindfulness and compassion can contribute to people communicating with each other in a more wholesome way. Inspiring examples are offered, from different perspectives, to apply in daily practice. For everyone who is interacting with human beings - and who isn’t - this book is warmly recommended. I think our society is in need of this more than ever before …’Anne Speckens, professor of psychiatry and founder and director of Radboudumc Centre for Mindfulness in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. ‘I particularly enjoyed how accessible the book is, with lots of simple examples and a collection of ideas I had some familiarity with but presented in a fresh way with easy to use resources. Imagine how much better the world of corporate work could be if the CEO or human resource manager about to have a difficult conversation used some of these approaches.’Fionnuala Tennyson, Senior Communication Consultant whose former roles include Director of Communications at Kraft Foods Europe, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Chief of Strategic Communications at the United Nations World Food Programme.‘Through mindful communication, the emotional ripples of presence, understanding, empathy, help and support spread out and are replicated across our communities and societies. We desperately need mindful communication, presence and compassion at this point in our evolution, to rise to the challenges we face. This wonderful book offers a powerful and practical guide to helping each of us develop those deep and essential capacities.’Michael West, CBE, is Senior Visiting Fellow at The King's Fund, London and Professor of Organisational Psychology at Lancaster University. • On the Significance of Religion for the SDGs

Taylor & Francis Ltd On the Significance of Religion for the SDGs

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis timely volume addresses the rising interest in the role of religion in global issues worldwide. The ambitious Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as the framework for this exploration, discussing questions such as: What role does religion play in poverty and poverty alleviation? How does religion inspire people in combatting gender inequality? What is religion's role in fueling conflict and which resources can religion offer for peace and reconciliation? Based on the conviction that not one single faith tradition or discipline can adequately address the complexity of current global issues, this book brings in the perspectives of different faith traditions and different disciplines. Combining cutting-edge research with case studies and concrete implications for academics, policymakers, and practitioners, this concise and easily accessible volume helps to build bridges between these different actors anTrade Review"Religion Matters makes a forceful case that a deeply embedded consideration of religious approaches to development thinking and action needs to be a central part of the international development landscape. Primarily through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the analysis focuses on both strengths and weaknesses that the myriad of religious institutions and communities bring to specific challenges. It offers well thought-out-frameworks to help policymakers as they navigate the complex religious worlds that include both powerful core ideas and fodder for ample controversy and, more hopefully, dialogue."Katherine Marshall, Senior Fellow, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, Georgetown University, USA; Executive Director, World Faiths Development Dialogue"This book highlights the important role that religion can play in achieving the SDGs as well as some of the pitfalls. It combines social science and theological approaches with ‘spotlights’ on particular topics from practitioners in the field to underscore the fact that religion matters for development and needs to be taken seriously. In contrast to many other texts in this field, the contributors are all ‘insider voices’ and ‘imminent critics’ of the faith traditions they write about. This volume, therefore, brings a fresh approach for academics, policymakers, and practitioners interested in the relationships between religion and the SDGs." Emma Tomalin, Professor of Religion and Public Life, University of Leeds, UK"This book seeks to build bridges across the secular-religious divide and between the different spheres of engagement in development, including academics, policymakers, and practitioners. The authors develop this aim in two parts: Part 1: The rise of religion and development and Part 2: Religion and the sustainable development goals. The book engages these two topics in 12 chapters from many different religious perspectives making it a wonderful example of interreligious dialogue and putting the spotlight on many different contentious and contested issues around the globe. This kind of collaborative form of research on religion and development gives expression to an African (isiXhosa) saying: "The bird builds its nest by using other birds"."Ian Nell, Professor of Practical Theology, Stellenbosch University, South Africa"The issue of the relationship between religion and the SDGs is a crucial topic, not least because the influence of the former may be crucial in achieving the latter. In this volume, Christine Schliesser analyses the role of religion in the SDGs. The book is a welcome addition to the growing literature on the role of religion in development and should be of particular interest to students and the general reader."Jeffrey Haynes, Emeritus Professor of Politics, London Metropolitan University, UK"Religion is embedded in every expression of human culture around the globe and, in spite of increasing secularism, religion continues to be a major influence for the vast majority of people in the world today. So, if we are to achieve the ambition of the Agenda 2030 with the 17 SDGs, it’s essential to consider religion in every aspect of development. This book provides an excellent introduction for policymakers and practitioners, it builds bridges across the secular-religious divide and encourages faith communities to work together to address complex issues."Tony Macaulay, Northern Ireland author, leadership consultant, peace builder and broadcaster"This book comprises of recent advancements in development theory and practice. It embraces vital discussions on gender equality, poverty, inequality, peace and justice, all of which are fundamental in understanding the significance of religion in development. These discourses take place in a network of global dialogue, involving voices from various faith traditions."Auli Vähäkangas, Professor in Practical Theology, University of Helsinki, FinlandTable of ContentsNotes on the Author, List of Contributors, Foreword, Executive Summary, List of Abbreviations, Introduction, PART I: The Rise of Religion in Development – Background and Current Trends, 1. Book SynopsisThrough analysis of the Covenants of the Prophet Mu?ammad, which pledge protection to diverse faith communities, this book makes a profoundly important contribution to research on early Islam by determining the Covenants' historicity and textual accuracy. The authors focus on the Prophet Mu?ammad's relationship with other faith communities by conducting detailed textual and linguistic analysis of documents which have received little scholarly consideration before. This not only includes decrees of the Prophet Mu?ammad, Umar ibn al-Kha??ab, Ali ibn Abi ?alib, and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, but also of important Muslim rulers. They present their findings in relation to contemporaneous historical writings, historic testimonies, official recognition, archaeological evidence, historic scribal conventions, date-matching calculations, textual parallelisms, and references in Muslim and non-Muslim sources. They also provide new and revised translations of various Covenants issued bTrade ReviewAn official endorsement was granted to the authors on 24 March 2022, in Doha, on the day that the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates St. Sophronius of Jerusalem by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Qatar:"This book has confirmed the stance of the Orthodox Church throughout the centuries as it concerns the authenticity of covenants of Muslim rulers issued mainly to Christian clergy, which had the purpose to protect monasteries, churches, or communities. The Patriarch of Jerusalem Sophronius received the covenant from Caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, respected also by Ottoman rulers, which explains why a number of copies have been preserved in the official archive of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, including even micro-sized scrolls that were used by the bearers for traveling. This historical memory and experience of co-existence is maintained until today.Belonging to the Church of Jerusalem, I have the privilege to be consecrated as the first Archbishop of Qatar by the successor of Patriarch Sophronius, our current Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, witnessing the historical connection between the Church of Jerusalem and Qatar, and at the same time renewing and extending this shared historical memory to peaceful co-existence.It is a well-documented and useful book, thanks to the authors’ academic efforts, offering fruitful conclusions and a significant contribution that sheds light on a very important field for understanding the common history of co-existence between Christians and Muslims in the East."Archbishop Makarios of Qatar, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese"Professor Ibrahim Zein and Ahmed El-Wakil’s book, The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence, is particularly important for many reasons. It is a work that delves into the historical sources, with a detailed examination of Islamic historical works concerned with co-existence between Christians and Muslims. These are key to understanding the historical events which took place many centuries later, for there is no Caliph or Sulṭān who did not issue fermāns recognizing the historical and religious value of the Monastery of St. Catherine in Mount Sinai, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and Mount Athos. This study sheds light on the reasons behind this protection and why it was extended over the centuries. Living on Mount Athos, a place exclusively dedicated to God with its 20 monasteries and theocratic status, we find the tradition of Muḥammad and the ahdnāme to be very much alive. All monasteries which have copies of the ahdnāme have preserved them with great esteem. In our time, where people can easily succumb to extremism, this book is an important reminder to return to the sources, history, and to tradition. Though there may have been conflicts, these do not define the essence of the relationship between Christians and Muslims, for there was also peace, co-existence, and mutual respect. As the pages of this study show, these are the values that reflect the Will of God. I thank the authors for this wonderful and useful work. May God bless you."Father Theophilos Pantokratorinos, Monastery of Pantokratoros, Mount Athos"This book is an important and extremely interesting contribution for the study of Islam, its traditional characteristics, its life in its earliest historical context, its relations with people of other religious traditions, especially Christians and Jews, as well as its encounter with various other people. What makes this study particularly distinct is the kind of "sources" it examines and on which it is based; something which makes the discussion about these sources, their very survival, their origin, authenticity, tradition, geography and any kind of information unveiled through them, topics of very important scholarly interest. The material is impressive; so is its treatment."Daniel J. Sahas, Professor Emeritus University of Waterloo, Canada"For its scholarship and its thoroughness of analysis, this book can open a new era in Muslim/Christian collegiality as Abrahamic Religions. This study of the covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad with Christians and other communities puts into practice and brings into our consciousness the ideals of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together issued by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, the words spoken by the Grand Ayatollah Sistani when the Pope visited him in Najaf – "You are part of us. We are part of you", and the encyclical Fratelli Tutti of Pope Francis. The research of Ibrahim Zein and Ahmed El-Wakil confounds intolerant hearsay regarding the beliefs and practices of the Prophet Muḥammad, founder of Islamic faith in the God of Abraham, traditions, both Christian and Muslim, which have not accurately conveyed the deeds of the Prophet with respect to Christians. These mistaken traditions have, over centuries, contributed to unnecessary hostility of some Muslims towards Christians and of some Christians towards Muslims. Now, with the publication of this book, there is no need for such intense suspicion and animosity between the faiths to continue. Both Muslims and Christians should read this book and reframe their appreciation of each other.Zein and El-Wakil have rigorously brought forward historic references to the covenants of the Prophet, carefully considered and authenticated the texts of such covenants convincingly, and so have given us confidence that the texts we have received of those covenants can be accepted as the testimony and the aspirations of the Prophet himself."Dr. Steve Young, Global Executive Director of the Caux Round Table for Moral Capitalism (CRT), USA"The publication of The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence marks a watershed moment in the history of Islam, one that may help provoke a paradigm shift in Muslim-Christian relations on a planetary scale. This monumental scholarly undertaking, rooted in rigorous archival research and groundwork, recenters our understanding of the religious and socio-political philosophy of the Prophet Muḥammad and contributes to realigning relations between Islam and Christianity. God and His Messenger will most certainly be pleased. Blessed be this book, blessed be its authors, and blessed be the peacemakers for they will be called children of God."Dr. John Andrew Morrow, author of The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World, The Messenger of Mercy, The Islamic Interfaith Initiative, and Islam and the People of the Book"This book merits careful consideration. Full of new research and fresh arguments about the Covenants, Zein and El-Wakil’s work could substantially revise many scholars’ understanding not just of Muḥammad’s relationships to Christians, but of early Islam and other religions. Thought-provoking!"Dr. Jason Welle, O.F.M. The Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Rome"I am particularly happy with the high-level and outstanding results that accompany The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence, a study conducted by Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion, Dr. Ibrahim Zein, and Ahmed El-Wakil, a distinguished scholar on Islamic texts of early Islam, both of whom are active researchers at the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar. Anyone who has followed the publications of these two authors will find that this book is a culmination of their previous studies concerning what happened during the first century of Islam. By respectfully treating the sources at their disposal, their new approach contests what has been almost universally established from the post-Crusade period up to our own times by mainstream academia. The authors’ methodology is based on etymology and the semantic study of terms used in early Islamic texts to reveal important historical information not so obvious at first sight. Having studied an extensive number of copies of the ahdnāme, they uncover that Muḥammad, according to the Will of God, established a huge legislative framework during the last ten years of his life orientated at the co-existence of the nations of the Holy Bible and which aimed at restricting all manner of possible conflict between them."Dimitrios E. Kalomirakis, Emeritus Director of Christian Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture"The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-Existence sheds new light on documents of protection which the early Muslims granted to the various communities of the Near-East, among which were the Armenian people. The book demonstrates how the Caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb extended his protection to the Armenian Apostolic Church when he entered Jerusalem, making a convincing case that this was based on a precedent set by the Prophet Muḥammad. Ever since, the Armenian Apostolic Church’s uninterrupted presence in the Holy Land has been universally acknowledged by Muslim rulers, including Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Ayyūbī in his memorable fermān.We thank the authors for their work which we believe will help strengthen the bonds of cooperation and brotherhood between Muslims and the adherents of the Armenian Apostolic Church."Father Koryoun Baghdasaryan, Chancellor of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Armenian Apostolic ChurchTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisThis book describes some of the major psychological processes that underpin various biblical stories and some of the theological speculation to which they have given rise. Psychological biblical criticism, as described here, is suggested as an alternative or supplement to historical-cultural, textual, philological, literary, and other types of biblical criticism.Using a combination of Jungian and psychoanalytic theory, Corbett shows how some biblical material arises from human psychodynamics, while some originates in the archetypal level of the psyche and is further elaborated as it passes through the human level of the psyche. The author addresses some of the traditional anxieties about psychological approaches to biblical stories. He views Jungâs approach as an evolving mythology of the sacred that offers an alternative to purely theological approaches to the Bible and to the traditions that emerged from it.This book will be of value to practicing psychotherapists an

While both aim to alleviate suffering, their attempts at integration often remain superficial. Rubin demonstrates how therapy and meditation compensate for each other's blind spots, providing richer understanding and opening unexpected pathways to healing and transformation. There's growing interest in blending Eastern meditative and Western psychotherapeutic traditions among practitioners and those seeking deeper self-understanding. In response, Rubin illuminates how these practices, when pursued together, create synergies and offer profound depths of insight impossible to achieve through either discipline alone.Meditative Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis provides the conceptual framework underlying the author's Psychotherapy Case Studies, offering a comprehensive theoretical foundation that enriches its practical companion volume. Together, these works create a powerful resource for therapists, spiritual seekers, and anyone interested in personal growth, offering a natural path to psychological healing and a more meaningful life.
