University of Notre Dame Press Being in the World
Book SynopsisBeing in the World contains seven hundred and fifty of the most salient quotations found in the English translations of fifty-four works by Jacques Maritain organized into thematic chapters.Trade Review"Fr. Mario O. D'Souza's careful selection from the works of Jacques Maritain provides the reader with an invaluable sampling of Maritain's extensive philosophical work. In it, we find examples of Maritain's almost lyrical gift of expression as well as of his trenchant wit. More than a scholarly contribution, the volume also ably serves as an introduction and entrance into Maritain's corpus." —William Sweet, St. Francis Xavier University, Canada"Father D'Souza's wide-ranging collection of Maritain insights and reflections is most welcome. It is an extraordinarily useful and organized review of his mind at its best. I thought, as I read through these reminders of Maritain's genius, that I should like to have a class in which we did nothing for a semester or two but read carefully through the 'range of reason' that Maritain provides for us. We know of Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas and what such genius can see. We have in this collection a reminder of what this tradition could do and of what it did do when a man like Maritain worked his way through, in his own way, all that is. This contemplative 'working' is the true work of a genuine philosopher. This book is both needed and, yes, unexpected. Indeed, it is a delight in that proper sense of a 'delight of the mind.'" —James V. Schall, S. J., emeritus, Georgetown University"Being in the World: A Quotable Maritain Reader makes an original contribution to the field of Maritain studies and to philosophy generally. Maritain is a thinker of great insight and a writer with a fine style. It is very useful to lay out these quotes containing many of his insights and showing his methods and lines of argument. The volume will be of interest not only to philosophers but also to scholars and readers from other fields such as politics, the arts, religion, and education." —John Hittinger, University of St. Thomas“Being in the World is a collection of some seven hundred and fifty quotations selected and thematically arranged with the primary purpose of re-introducing a modern audience to Jacques Maritain . . . . Mario O. D’Souza expertly chose quotations that speak to or resonate with issues relevant to twenty-first century philosophical inquiry . . . . D’Souza provides an excellent overview to Maritain in the forward of the book plus a bibliography of Maritain sources and a useful index of concepts and names. Being in the World is recommended for all academic libraries.” —Catholic Library World“The editors of this collection of the writings of Jacques Maritain, one of the outstanding philosopher/theologians of the mid-20th century, provide a readable and ‘quotable’ resource for contemporary students, scholars, and theologians. D’Souza re-read 55 of Jacques Maritain’s works, took over 1,700 pages of notes, and organized them into a quotable corpus of 40 topics from ‘Aristotle’ to ‘Wisdom.’ The result is what well may be a classic study.” —The Catholic Journalist

Zondervan 30 Old Testament Passages with Deeper Meaning
Book Synopsis30 Old Testament Passages with Deeper Meaning invites everyday Bible readers to discover the greater depth in familiar verses. Michael Williams brings years of experience in explaining how often-overlooked cultural, linguistic, historical, and theological clues in ordinary biblical texts reveal deeper meaning for those who are made aware of them.Trade Review'An illuminating exploration of 30 remarkable Old Testament texts by a master teacher. Each chapter provides an entry point into not only a single verse's meaning, but to larger dimensions of the worldview and culture reflected in the Hebrew scriptures. The book is accessible to all, and will also inspire teachers who seek to translate insights from advanced theological study for wide audiences.' * John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship *'I love finding new treasures in Scripture, further enhancing seemingly familiar and ordinary verses. By uncovering some of the word plays and allusions original readers would notice, Michael Williams shares some of these gems with us, reinvigorating our time in Scripture with the sparkle of God's glory.' * Aimee Byrd, author of The Sexual Reformation and Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood *'I thoroughly enjoyed reading Old Testament Passages with Deeper Meaning. Michael Williams brings out the 'hidden depths' of thirty Old Testament passages by careful attention to context and the details of the passage. He is not discovering some secret meaning, but rather brings out the surprising dimensions of the passage he is so skillfully reading. Written in an accessible and winsome style, I recommend this book for all lovers of the Bible.' * Tremper Longman III, PhD, Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Westmont College *'Michael Williams is a highly perceptive reader of the Bible and his insights into it are sharp and penetrating. But he wears his rich learning lightly and writes so clearly so that we can readily absorb his fine teaching. This book is a gift.' * Cornelius Plantinga, Author of Under the Wings of God *'Michael Williams masters technical Old Testament scholarship and makes it accessible to the ordinary layperson. He understands how Old Testament passages point to Christ and apply to believers today. His deeper meanings are neither allegorical nor idiosyncratic but highlight what the original authors intended with the words they chose. He reinforces his interpretations with memorable puns himself. This book could be used in the classroom or for devotions but will enjoyably inform many other readers as well. Countless thanks to Williams for these valuable insights!' * Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Denver Seminary *'Michael Williams writes a gem of a book showing how 'ordinary' Old Testament moments have more to teach us than we might suspect. He shines a light on thirty passages, taking a closer look at their contexts. Historical insights joined with close attention to the details of the text bring these passages to life in new ways. 30 Old Testament Passages is as engaging as it is accessible. I highly recommend it.' * Jeannine K. Brown, Bethel Seminary, Saint Paul, Minnesota *'My good friend and brother in Christ, and Associate Editor of the NIV Study Bible has produced a most interesting book, which I enthusiastically endorse. His approach sheds further light on the meaning of the Scripture passages he considers. In his approach he employs comparative literature, inclusios; commentaries' Hebrew grammar, syntax, and lexicography; etymologies; paranomasia; archaeology; ancient Near Eastern texts and contexts; and other literary and textual features. Much of the material in this book could be subsumed under the general rubric of Bible backgrounds. The author's goal is not to surface a meaning different from traditional understandings but a deeper meaning, thus what I call enhancing the meaning. It is my great pleasure to highly recommend this work of careful scholarship. The treatment of these selected passages is balanced, thorough and well reasoned. The author provides examples of how to enhance the semantic range of the texts he discusses. My heartfelt appreciation and congratulations go to Michael Williams.' * Kenneth L. Barker, General Editor, NIV Study Bible *'What does the Church and our World need more than ever? I would propose that the Church needs deeper discipleship from understanding the Bible and living in light of God's Word. Michael Williams is a gifted Bible scholar and teacher who has a passion for all believers to understand the faithfulness of God through all generations by seeing how even one verse in Scripture can help a person see the bigger picture of God's grace. Through short, but penetrating studies of 30 Old Testament texts, we are given a tour of the Old Testament to see the wider frame for understanding the scope of God's care for us. Beyond personal edification, the material is already set up through key questions at the end of each chapter to be the basis for preaching and teaching series as well as for small group studies. While original languages are referenced, Michael Williams with clarity and compassion makes sure that all readers gain confidence in trusting that the God who makes His promises known has kept those promises through all generations. Enjoy this journey!' * Jul Medenblik, President of Calvin Theological Seminary *

Soon, she began to discover quotes she liked—words from other people that she wanted to keep and hold on to. She started to write them down on those smooth ivory pages. That habit of gathering sayings has stayed with Danielle throughout the years. And now, after a lifetime of collecting, she shares the quotations that have meant the most to her—lines from books and magazines, pieces of poetry, short passages from the Bible, and quotes gathered from the world around her. These are the words that bring her wisdom and humor, inspiration and comfort, and, above all, joy. May Expect a Miracle bring the same to you, too.
