Book SynopsisThis book offers a unique framework to understand how public institutions and private investors can collaborate to sustain long-term investments (LTIs), with a specific focus on public private partnership for infrastructure, blended finance mechanisms, and impact investing.Offering a holistic approach to long-term investing, which encompasses both infrastructure and corporate innovation and sustainability strategies, chapters explore how collaborations can mobilize resources, overcome market failures, and maximize impacts. Furthermore, it provides a deeper understanding on LTIs, both in terms of the sustainable investment approaches that investors are progressively adopting, and in terms of the main domains of LTIs such as infrastructure and corporate investments in research and innovation, sustainability, and circularity. The book also highlights how LTIs are essential to ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, which represent an institutionalization of the concept of public value.Public-Private Collaborations for Long-Term Investments will be critical reading for policymakers, investors, and managers working in the public and private sectors. The combination of cutting-edge insights and depth of knowledge rooted in the scientific literature will also be beneficial for scholars and students in the fields of public administration and management, infrastructure finance, and sustainability.Trade Review‘The business of business is being redefined before our very eyes: inclusion, sustainability, impact and ESG are now integrated into most investment decisions. Much more needs to be done as Agenda 2030 will not be met until “all hands on deck”. This book can serve as a good starting point for this critical collaboration.’ -- Royston Braganza, Grameen Capital‘This book highlights the importance of activating private capital to close the infrastructure gap and creating stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors. This will help to drive economic recovery in the short-term whilst driving longer-term economic and social outcomes.’ -- Marie Lam-Frendo, Global Infrastructure Hub‘This book is an excellent reference to university and master students, executives and civil servants, academic researchers and many others that are keen to learn more about enabling long-term investments and public-private collaborations.’ -- Iliyana Tsanova, European CommissionTable of ContentsContents: Foreword Iliyana Tsanova, Deputy Director-General - DG Budget, European Commission Preface 1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Public Enterprise Revisited: A Closer Look at the

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAccording to conventional wisdom, public ownership of industry in post-war Britain led, invariably, to under-performance. This book casts doubt upon this view by showing that, as far as the labour productivity record of the expanding state-owned industries is concerned, this was clearly not the case. The book compares the 1954-79 labour productivity record of 5 expanding public sector industries to that of 24 expanding, capital intensive, mass-production industries in the British private sector. The author shows that the public sector industries' labour productivity growth was significantly faster than that of the private sector industries. Strikingly, he also finds that the state-owned industries were narrowing their productivity gap with their US counterparts at a significantly faster rate than the private sector industries. Dr Iordanoglou concludes that it is possible that public ownership had - in the historical period investigated - a long-term positive effect on these industries. This book will be of great interest to scholars of industrial economics, public sector economics and economic history.Trade Review'Iordanoglou has carried out a very significant piece of work. His basic idea of comparing the growth rate of productivity in the public and private sectors over a 25-year period provides a very useful method of approaching the bigger question of the relative efficiency of public enterprise . . . The book deserves wide distribution.' -- John Calvert, Labour / Le Travail'The merits of the work include a critical examination of the conventional wisdom that British nationalised companies 'failed' and the rejection of this standard view; the use of a highly original method, based on historical evidence, to examine the productivity performance of British industries; scrupulous treatment of the industrial statistics and a quite exemplary, path-breaking, approach to international productivity comparisons; a theory of industrial performance which makes full use of the latest theory, while situating industries in their social and political context.' -- John Grahl, University of North London, UKTable of ContentsContents: 1. • On Creating Competition and Strategic

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd On Creating Competition and Strategic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the ongoing transformation of public utilities, also known as network-based industries, in Western Europe and the United States. Examples are telecommunications, energy, and water distribution. Most of these network-based industries were until recently natural monopolies. Over the last two decades national governments have embarked upon privatization, deregulation and liberalization of their public utilities. The contributors in this volume examine the many related aspects, including: key characteristics and regulation of network based industries the emerging EU regulatory framework corporate strategies, industry dynamics, and organizational performance case studies from the telecommunications and water industries engineering competition versus engineering regulation. This book provides a non-ideological and multidisciplinary overview of recent views and experiences with the liberalization, privatization and regulatory reform of public utilities in Europe and the United States. As such it will be of interest to scholars and researchers of institutional economics, and organizational studies, as well as regulators, policymakers and consultants involved in both studying and governing network-based industries.Trade Review'The introductory chapter by the editors is extremely wide-ranging and therefore very useful for any reader not yet introduced to the manifold intricacies of this topic. What is remarkable about this chapter is that three aspects are dealt with at the same time: the driving forces of the reform of network industries, the economics of pro-competitive regulation of them, and the political and institutional traps/complexities of this process. If this were not enough, it is done with a view on both the US and Europe. The remainder of the book shows, sometimes with painstaking detail, not only how difficult it is for regulators and their political masters but also for incumbents and not just for new entrants, as is always stressed. It shows the tricky question of extending reforms to the water and sewage sectors, how complex state/company interactions are in the first and later stages of reform and how hard it is to design 'regulation' properly in the second generation.' -- Jacques Pelkmans, College of Europe, Bruges and Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels, BelgiumTable of ContentsContents: Introduction: Making Markets and Controlling Competition: Regulatory Reform in Public Utilities Part I: Perspectives on Engineering Competition 1. • The IPO Decision: Why and How Companies Go Public

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The IPO Decision: Why and How Companies Go Public

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe IPO Decision is an exciting new book that clarifies how the initial public offering (IPO) process actually works. It separates fact from fiction and imposes a logical structure on the most up-to-date IPO-related research. All major topics pertaining to the going-public process are included: IPO timing, the financial, strategic, and corporate governance benefits and costs of public ownership, corporate restructuring, valuation, the role of the investment bank in the primary and secondary markets, the optimality of IPO mechanisms (book-building vs. auctions), analyst coverage, and the long-run performance of IPOs. IPOs garnered unprecedented positive attention in the 1990s for their spectacular returns and central role in entrepreneurial activity. Subsequent revelations of unscrupulous IPO allocation and promotion practices cast a less favorable shadow. The latest significant event in the IPO market is Google's unconventional use of an auction for its offering. Public discussion and debate about these developments has often taken place in an information vacuum, leading to misunderstandings and false conclusions.Unparalleled in its scope, The IPO Decision presents the findings from theoretical and empirical research in a rigorous yet accessible manner. In doing so, it develops the intellectual foundation necessary for a constructive dialogue about reforming the IPO process. Scholars, students and industry professionals interested in the economics of IPOs will find this volume a comprehensive and engaging addition to their library.Trade Review'Because of its scope and detail, The IPO Decision would be a useful addition to an academic library serving a finance program or that has a financial services library. Public librarians might consider this book if they have a large constituency of sizable private businesses of finance students.' -- Janet Hartman, Research Librarian, William Blair & Co, Chicago, Business Information Alert'This volume certainly belongs in undergraduate libraries. Faculty who teach courses in the economics of finance can use the book as a reference and as a guide for students working on papers on the economics of initial public offerings (IPOs). Draho summarizes the extant literature on all aspects of the subject. For example, a student interested in the valuation process underlying initial public offerings receives a well-written overview of the approaches used, including both discounted cash flows and real option analysis. Students are also guided to the relevant literature on the subject. . . a useful resource for beginning research on this topic. Highly recommended.' -- W.S. Curran, Choice'Jason Draho's The IPO Decision is a clear, well organized, and especially well researched book on the IPO environment, process, and stock price results.' -- Roger G. Ibbotson, Yale University and Chairman, Ibbotson Associates, Inc., US'Even more important in the post-Internet bubble world, The IPO Decision by Jason Draho provides a critical, in-depth and practical perspective on the crucial terms and factors that influence the IPO process. From the company that plans to go public (or its professional advisor) to the buy side or sell side investment banker - the book provides a roadmap for all professionals associated with the IPO process.' -- Ross Barrett, President and Co-Founder, VC Experts, Inc., New York, USTable of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Its in-depth philosophical analysis of the main ethical positions adopts an interdisciplinary and international approach. This book is important reading for healthcare policy makers and shapers and healthcare managers. Academics in ethics, philosophy, economics, and all healthcare disciplines will find it useful, as will public health specialists, health economists, and social scientists with an interest in health and medicine.Trade Review"'The importance and originality of this book is that it now supplies a clearly argued ethical analysis of the complex medical, social and moral dimensions of this perceived crisis, leaving attentive readers in no doubt that the fundamental questions raised for society are indeed moral ones. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Nature of Health: How America Lost, and Can

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis pioneering work addresses a key issue that confronts all industrialised nations: How do we organise healthcare services in accordance with fundamental human rights, whilst competing with scientific and technological advances, powerful commercial interests and widespread public ignorance? "The Nature of Health" presents a coherent, affordable and logical way to build a healthcare system. It argues against a health system fixated on the pursuit of longevity and suggests an alternative where the ability of an individual to function in worthwhile relationships is a better, more human goal. By reviewing the etymology, sociology and anthropology of health, this controversial guide examines the meaning of health, and proves how a community-centred healthcare system improves local economy, creates social capital and is affordable, rational, personal, and just. "This is badly needed nourishment for a medical system glutted on technology, individualism, profit and the pursuit of longevity. Read and be fed." - Christopher Koller, Health Insurance Commissioner, The State of Rhode Island, USA. "Unique. Surprising. A real eye-opener. Just about everyone who doesn't have a vested financial interest in maintaining the status quo will agree that U.S. healthcare is badly broken. [This book] is making it possible for us to refocus from how to provide healthcare to how to achieve health. Their description of health as successful functioning in community, rather than as a measure of longevity is a definition that can make a reader feel healthier as they take gradually appreciate the power of the concept. On this foundation, it is not as hard as one might think to outline a healthcare system that is equitable, affordable and achievable." - Alexander Blount EdD, Professor of Family Medicine, University of Massacusetts Medical Center.Trade Review'Compelling [...] raises important questions about the goals of health- care spending.' • Visualising Health Care Practice Improvement:

Taylor & Francis Ltd Visualising Health Care Practice Improvement:

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy is it that in spite of all the health policy reforms, clinical practice innovations, increasing intersectoral interdependencies and new medical and information technologies, so little has changed in the way we research and evaluate health care? Don't these changes cry out for new ways of being studied and appraised? And don't our approaches to clinical practice innovation cry out for being reinvented too? Surely, we cannot continue to wheel out research and evaluation paradigms, improvement approaches and methods that were designed for 20th century problems and 20th century health care, and assume they will be able to make sense of the problems we experience and the care we provide in the 21st century? These changes necessitate a new paradigm of health service research, evaluation and improvement and this new model adopts approaches and methods that embrace complexity. The approaches and methods can account for the vicissitudes of front-line care, the activities of front-line staff and the experiences of patients and families - where care happens. Visualising Health Care Practice Improvement draws on years of video feedback research shaping an approach that enables not only a retrospective understanding but also a view into the future, of what might be possible. It presents the argument that change is not principally about adopting solutions from elsewhere but that it is conditional on people exploring whether proposed solutions suit existing habituations. It involves a process of exploration, discovery, secession and renewal. Health care managers, policy makers and shapers will find this book enlightening. It will also be empowering to all health care professionals and front-line staff.Trade Review"In my experience, healthcare is a safety-critical world (justifiably) skeptical about outside interventions to 'improve' it. Exnovations are a great answer, and this book demonstrates beautifully how improvements can be made to work from within." - Sidney Dekker, Professor, Safety Science Innovation Lab, Griffith University, Australia "This book shows how to move beyond engagement to empowerment of front-line clinicians in quality and safety improvements, expanding their skills and intelligence to a new level to create sustainable solutions for complex safety challenges." - Ian Leistikow, MD PhD, Senior Inspector, Dutch Healthcare Inspectorate, the Netherlands "Relatively recent advances in technology have accumulated like sedimentary rock on the ancient foundation of medicine to produce a complex and error-prone system. Placing the video camera in their hands, clinicians are directed to clearly view and review their daily practices in order to improve the quality of their services. Iedema and colleagues view the world of medical practice and technology with a fresh (video) eye, showing clinicians are able to heal themselves" - Associate Professor Kenneth Herrmann, MD, Neonatal-Intensive Care Specialist, Indiana University School of Medicine (Department of Paediatrics) and Women's Deaconness Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana, USTable of ContentsPreface. Book SynopsisCulture, Context and Quality in Health Sciences Research, Education, Leadership and Patient Care (Second book in a series of five) Sustainably Improving Health Care promotes the importance of integrating improved care outcomes, system performance, and professional development so that the future of health-care advancement is creative and sustainable. It addresses the challenge of creating and nurturing a culture of continuous improvement that is able to sustain and generate creative professional work for the improvement of health care. Using real-world examples, the book succinctly reveals how the model can be practically applied from a variety of different perspectives. "This book makes the persuasive argument that well-intended efforts to redesign and reform health care will enjoy only short lives without the full commitment and engagement of the health-care worker - the product of the sustainability- and capacity-building engine of professional development." Dave Davis MD, CCFP, FCFP, in the Foreword "This book is about a model that has emerged from our own work, our observations of the work of colleagues and others, and our refl ections about the requirements for the future of the continual improvement of health care. We explore its origins, its content and manifestations, and its implications, particularly for health professional leaders interested in the ongoing improvement of health care. This is the first comprehensive book that describes in detail the knowledge and skill base necessary to successfully lead these complex organizations. Written by the world's leading authorities it combines the science of leadership, organizational structure, financial and personnel management, public relations and communications, trainee and student policy, community relations, and globalization. "This volume focuses on policy considerations that provide the foundation for AHSCs to thrive. While the legislation, challenges, and strategies will change over time, the need for strong policy to influence and guide organizational and individual behavior will not. AHSCs are complex organizations that must continue to evolve to face the multifactorial nature of health care problems. Book Synopsis'In recent decades most of the international effort given over to studying and improving the safety of patient care has been focused in acute hospital settings. To some extent this was always something of a puzzle to those of us with a direct interest in this important issue...Now, however, the tide is slowly turning. Policymakers, healthcare leaders and research grant funders are beginning to recognise that greater evidence is required to understand more about what can and does go wrong in primary care, with increasing attention now being paid to what can be done to minimise avoidable harm to patients in this setting.' From the Preface This remarkable new book represents a substantial body of work - led by key educators and researchers - devoted to learning about and improving the safety of primary healthcare. It offers highly practical guidance and evidence for a broad range of related improvement methods, concepts and interventions developed and implemented by the NES primary care team, or as a direct result of fruitful partnerships between academic, professional, public or regulatory institutions across the UK and internationally. Skillfully presented, the book is organised into five interlinked parts, each with a number of related chapters. Book SynopsisGreat and increasing inequities exist between the peoples of the Third World and those of the First. As well, we find ourselves threatened by imminent environmental catastrophes largely as a result of trying to maintain such inequities. This clear and straightforward text explains the complex origins of such bodies as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and others, and demonstrates the extent to which they exacerbate the problem. The situation is now so grave that we can no longer afford the luxury of leaving it to the professionals. We are all involved. We find ourselves hearing daily news reports of wars, starvation, the HIV/AIDS pandemic and natural disasters, rendered worse by inadequate international responses. The United Nations, once seen as an effective arbiter and mediator in such matters, now finds itself unable to exercise authority adequately. Third World Health: hostage to First World Wealth adopts a positive approach and puts forward various ways in which people at all levels can become more involved. It addresses the pivotal issue of health in the Third World and argues that it is very much hostage to the globalization of trade by and for the benefit of First World agencies.Trade Review"'Splendid...thorough...balanced...astonishingly accessible...informing and inspiring.
