Lippincott Williams and Wilkins Epidemiology in Medicine

Book SynopsisEpidemiology is the simplest and most direct method of studying the causes of disease in humans, and many major contributions have been made by studies that have demanded nothing more than the ability to count, to think logically, and to have an imaginative idea. With the accumulation of knowledge, however, its has become harder for individuals working alone to make effective contributions, and epidemiological research is becoming increasingly a matter of teamwork, not only because of the large number of people that may have to be studied and the large amount of data that have to be collected and analyzed, but also because of the need to bring together for the design and conduct of the study clinical experience, biological understanding, statistical expertise, and many other special skills that vary from one study to another. But if, in this sense, epidemiological research is becoming more complex, the core of the subject remains essentially simple, and a good epidemiological study sho

Book SynopsisThe book is an evidence-based source of information on women's health issues for health professionals already practicing lifestyle medicine, as well as an entry level textbook for those new to the field of lifestyle medicine. The collective expertise of each of the editors along with content provided by leaders within the American College of Lifestyle Medicine fills a much-needed void within the specialty of Lifestyle Medicine and is for providers of women's health globally.Trade Review"This women's health book is evidence based and comprehensive. There is nothing like it. Women need up to date information about physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress resilience, social connection and substance use. In addition, there is a desire to better understand the power of these pillars throughout a woman's life including pregnancy, menopause and the golden years. This book fills that need." Elizabeth Pegg Frates, MD, DipABLM, FACLM, President Elect of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine"Healthy aging begins at pre-conception. Evidence overwhelmingly shows that it’s we women who—through our lifestyle behavior choices—can take far greater control of our own health destinies, as well as the health destinies of our children and generations to come. We cannot underestimate the power of what we eat, how we move, and what we think in regard to our optimal health or lack thereof. This book is a must-read for all medical professionals!" Susan Benigas, Executive Director of the American College of Lifestyle MedicineLifestyle Medicine is the science of taking core principles and customizing how they're applied to each individual and each situation to achieve positive health behavior change. This book sets the evidence based foundation for how that process happens, and why it needs to happen, with the most important segment of health consumers - women. It is the next for all who are passionate about changing how health care is delivered." Wayne S. Dysinger, MD, MPH, Physician, Founder and Chair, Lifestyle Medical“Lifestyle factors have a powerful role in chronic disease prevention, underscoring the profound control we have over our health. Improving Women’s Health Across the Lifespan applies lifestyle medicine to women’s health, empowering women and their clinicians with the tools to transform their lives, and fostering a legacy of health for future generations.” JoAnn E. • Taylor & Francis Climate Change and Urban Health The Case of Hong

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a theoretical framework and related technical skills for investigating climate change and its public health consequences and responses with a focus on urban settings, and in particular Hong Kong, a subtropical metropolis in Asia. Specifically, the book examines the impact of climate change on health in terms of mortality, hospital admissions and help-seeking, as well as key response strategies of adaptation and mitigation. Many existing books tend to consider the relationship of climate change and public health as two connected issues divided into various discrete topics. Conversely, this book explicitly applies public health concepts to study the human impact of climate change, for example, by conceptualising climate change impact and its alleviation, mitigation and adaptation in a public health framework. Overall, this volume summarises what is known about climate change and health and ignites further debates in the area, especially for urban subtropical communities from within a wider global perspective. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental health, public health, climate change, urban studies and Asian studies.Table of Contents1. Introduction 2. Principles of Health, Public Health and Climate Change 3. Climate Change Impact on Disease and Health 4.Climate Change and Disasters 5. Research Methodology I: Climate and Health Outcome Modelling 6. Book SynopsisOnly one generation ago, entomology was a proudly isolated discipline. In Comstock Hall, the building of the Department of Entomology at Cornell University where I was first introduced to experimental science in the laboratory of Tom Eisner, those of us interested in the chemistry of life felt like interlopers. In the 35 years that have elapsed since then, all of biology has changed, and entomology with it. Arrogant molecular biologists and resentful classical biologists might think that what has happened is a hostile take-over of biology by molecular biology. But they are wrong. More and more we now understand that the events were happier and much more exciting, amounting to a new synthesis. Molecular Biology, which was initially focused on the simplest of organisms, bacteria and viruses, broke out of its confines after the initial fundamental questions were answered - the strucTable of ContentsSection 1: Care and maintenance of insect colonies. • Epidemic Modelling An Introduction 15 Cambridge

Cambridge University Press Epidemic Modelling An Introduction 15 Cambridge

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis general introduction to the ideas and techniques required for the mathematical modelling of diseases begins with an outline of some disease statistics dating from Daniel Bernoulli's 1760 smallpox data. The authors then describe simple deterministic and stochastic models in continuous and discrete time for epidemics taking place in either homogeneous or stratified (non-homogeneous) populations. Several techniques for constructing and analysing models are provided, mostly in the context of viral and bacterial diseases of human populations. These models are contrasted with models for rumours and vector-borne diseases like malaria. Questions of fitting data to models, and their use in understanding methods for controlling the spread of infection, are discussed. Exercises and complementary results at the end of each chapter extend the scope of the text, which will be useful for students taking courses in mathematical biology who have some basic knowledge of probability and statistics.Trade Review'… It gives an excellent general introduction to epidemic modelling, starting with an interesting historical account and then describing the most important and useful models which can be used.' Robert MacMillan, Mathematical Gazette'The book will be accessible … and its study highly rewarding, to anyone with an interest in epidemic models…' V. S. Isham, Short Book Reviews'Daley and Gani's monograph is a concise and useful presentation of a variety of epidemiological models.' Daniel Haydon, Trends in Ecology and Evolution'… gives an excellent general introduction to epidemic modelling … should certainly be available to undergraduates.' Robert MacMillan, The Mathematical Gazette'This book had us hooked … [it] remains an important reference in our library and is frequently consulted for advice on how to think about modelling in related contexts.' Darfiana Nur and Kerrie L. Mengersen, The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics'… the book is clear and well written … could serve as course literature for graduate, or possibly last year undergraduate, course in epidemic modelling.' Statistics in Medicine'I found the book very clear, concise and useful … I recommend the book very strongly as a teaching tool and as a research tool to academics and scientists who are interested in epidemic modeling. I also strongly recommend the book to applied mathematicians who are intetrested in stochastic models in general.' Mathematics TodayTable of ContentsPreface; 1. Some history; 2. University of Pittsburgh Press The Lung Block

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublic health, housing, poverty, and immigration dominated social and political discourse in early twentieth-century New York, much as they do today. The Lower East Side provided an urban environment where infectious disease and other public health concerns flourished. One city block in particular, known in muckraking circles as The Lung Block, housed four thousand first- and second-generation Americans in dilapidated tenements where deadly tuberculosis spread uninhibited. The Lung Block looks at a 1903 reform crusade to demolish this working-class tenement neighborhood and replace it with a park. Progressive reformers aimed to confront the area's moral and environmental dangers, but their conceptualization of the problem and methods for addressing it placed them into direct conflict with the hand-to-mouth priorities of the residents. The campaign and its eventual failure illuminate the formidable social barriers distancing urban reformers and the marginalized populations they intend t

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis innovative and engaging book argues that because our genetic information is directly linked to the genetic information of others, it is impossible to assert a âright to privacyâ in the same way that we can in other areas of life. This position throws up questions around access to sensitive data. It suggests that we may have to abandon certain intuitions about who may access our genetic information; and it raises concerns about discrimination against people with certain genetic characteristics. But the author asserts that regulating access to genetic information requires a more nuanced perspective that does not rely on the familiar language of rights. The book proposes new ways in which we may think about who has access to what genetic information, and on what basis they do so. Conceptually challenging, the book will prove engaging reading for scholars and students interested in the area of bioethics and medical law, as well as policy makers working with these pressing issues.

  • CRC Press Quantum Algorithms for Enhancing Cybersecurity in Computational Intelligence in Healthcare

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the exciting field of quantum computing, which is changing how we approach computation. It covers the basics, cybersecurity aspects, advanced machine learning techniques, and the many ways quantum computing can be used. Quantum computing is much more powerful than traditional computing. The book starts by explaining the core concepts like qubits, quantum gates, superposition, entanglement, quantum memory, and quantum parallelism. One important area is how quantum computing can improve machine learning for cybersecurity. It can handle huge amounts of data and find complex patterns faster than regular computers. This is especially useful for finding cyber threats in real time, like spotting unusual activity in healthcare networks that might mean a security breach. Quantum machine learning can help healthcare organizations better defend against advanced cyberattacks that try to steal patient data. The book also looks at how quantum computing is changing cybersecurity itself. It discusses quantum cryptography, post-quantum cryptography, and secure communication, explaining how quantum computing is leading to new ways of encrypting data, detecting threats, and protecting information. Beyond cybersecurity, the book shows how quantum computing impacts many other fields, such as medicine, finance, materials science, and logistics. It's poised to revolutionize AI in healthcare and many other sectors. Because quantum computing is constantly developing, with discoveries and applications happening all the time, this book brings together researchers from universities and industries to share their latest findings. It aims to help shape the future of this technology. It offers a solid foundation, detailed explanations of advanced techniques, and a fascinating look at how quantum computing is being used in the real world. As quantum computing becomes easier to access through new tools and cloud platforms, this book hopes to inspire new research in artificial intelligence and spark innovative applications that were previously thought impossible.

    Cambridge University Press Planetary Health

Book SynopsisWe live in unprecedented times - the Anthropocene - defined by far-reaching human impacts on the natural systems that underpin civilisation. Planetary Health explores the many environmental changes that threaten to undermine progress in human health, and explains how these changes affect health outcomes, from pandemics to infectious diseases to mental health, from chronic diseases to injuries. It shows how people can adapt to those changes that are now unavoidable, through actions that both improve health and safeguard the environment. But humanity must do more than just adapt: we need transformative changes across many sectors - energy, housing, transport, food, and health care. The book discusses specific policies, technologies, and interventions to achieve the change required, and explains how these can be implemented. It presents the evidence, builds hope in our common future, and aims to motivate action by everyone, from the general public to policymakers to health practitioners.Trade Review'This book illustrates the dramatic change in humanity's awareness about the realities of our world and our destiny. Planetary Health describes the transformation that will move us to a healthier, safer and more sustainable future, with hope, optimism and confidence.' Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and former Director-General of the World Health Organization'Andy Haines and Howie Frumkin's book provides an accessible and fast-paced account of the challenges we face in improving human health in parallel with our environment in the next decades. A must read for anyone involved in global health, and a must read for anyone interested in the future of our children and grandchildren.' Joy Phumaphi, Former Vice President of the World Bank and Director of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance'The climate crisis and other environmental challenges pose growing threats to the continued health of humanity. Andy Haines and Howie Frumkin's book cogently and accessibly summarizes these growing threats to human health, and outlines the transformative changes we need to enact to improve health around the world and at the same time safeguard the environment for our children and grandchildren. This book is essential reading for every decision-maker in government and NGOs formulating health or environmental policy. The book is also a wonderful overview of planetary health issues for the general reader and student. A more important topic for the future of humanity from two leading experts is hard to imagine. A very timely analysis of the central issues of our time.' Helen Clark, Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Former Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme'Andrew Haines and Howard Frumkin are two of the modern giants in planetary health. Their book highlights the value of cross-cutting approaches to human health and the health of the environment, combining resilience, health, equity, and prosperity. The book highlights the potential for the topic of planetary health to transform higher education, helping us rise to the challenge of multiple global crises. As we emerge from a global pandemic, I cannot imagine a more timely and important topic. An amazing, brilliantly argued compendium.' Judith Rodin, former President of the Rockefeller Foundation and former President of the University of Pennsylvania'By its very nature, planetary health is a vast and multidisciplinary subject. Our understanding of the field is constantly expanding, our approaches to addressing it rapidly evolving, and the political landscape surrounding it increasingly complex, and yet, Haines and Frumkin masterfully summarize the issue in all of its complexity, leaving the reader with a solid foundation of essential knowledge and - more importantly - hope, and a clearly delineated path forward.' Michele Barry, Director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford University, California'The Anthropocene Era. Our children and our children's children will be astonished that the first fully comprehensive book to describe their everyday life, was not written till 2021. And as they reflect on what Sir Andy Haines and Howard Frumkin have laid out, they will either ask why did we not follow the ideas for transformative change in this book; or they will stand together in hope saying, humanity took heed, it listened to evidence and common sense, and we were able to tilt the earth's systems on their axis. This book is a watershed, its integrated science combines separate strands of knowledge, and creates the space for far more equitable participation in and ownership of the actions needed. This book is published at a watershed moment in history, when the health of the planet is in our hands. Can Planetary Health become our zeitgeist?' Liz Grant, Assistant Principal, University of Edinburgh'Sir Andy Haines and Howard Frumkin's book Planetary Health: Safeguarding Human Health and the Environment in the Anthropocene is a fact-filled and thought-provoking volume that explains the origins and proposes sound solutions to the existential crises of the Anthropocene Era … This book offers a holistic approach that helps us understand why we must respect, protect and enforce multisectorial frameworks if we are to maintain the integrity of the unique integrated complex system that is the Earth. The book also describes the many actions each of us can choose to take across sectors and within the finite planetary boundaries and cultural context, to reverse and reduce the current risks to a minimum and to remain healthy. An important read!' Agnes Binagwaho, Vice Chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda'A brilliant book: Planetary Health, defined by founders of the field.' Tony Capon, Monash University, Victoria'A splendid and important piece of work. Andy Haines and Howard Frumkin have, over many decades, led the world in the understanding of the relationships between environment and health. In this crucially important book, they show how our destructive behaviour, on a huge scale, has undermined our environment in ways that foster pandemics and infectious diseases, and which profoundly damage our physical and mental health. They also show, through careful and evidence-based analysis, how we can transform how we live, work, and consume to not only restore our environment but also live in much healthier and more enjoyable ways.' Lord Nicholas Stern, London School of Economics'Wow! If you want state-of-the-art knowledge on humanity's future on Earth - here it is! From the depths of the great acceleration, tipping points and inequity, to transformative pathways, global justice and our grand prize - planetary health. Read it and you're equipped to navigate the Anthropocene.' Johan Rockström, Director, Potsdam Institute Climate Impact Research, and co-Chair of Future Earth'Focusing on potential solutions, the authors emphasize the integration of knowledge from different disciplinary and geographic perspectives to advance understanding. They cite at least 1,618 timely and scholarly sources, and dozens of tables, charts, and graphs enhance the text. Helpful chapter conclusions and the detailed index make this an excellent teaching tool … Essential. ' A. S. Ricker, Choice ConnectTable of Contents1. Our Changing Planet; 2. Climate Change; 3.
