Bruce S. Liese and Aaron T. Beck provide critical tools for understanding and treating the full range of addictive behaviors. Vivid case examples are used to illustrate CBT techniques, structure, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, group treatment, relapse prevention, and other effective therapeutic components. Several reproducible forms can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size.Trade Review"One of the most significant clinical paradigm shifts in the treatment of addictive disorders in the past 50 years has been the birth and growth of CBT, which has enabled clinicians worldwide to help patients more effectively. Beck and Liese have done a superb job of describing the theory, scientific foundations, and applications of CBT for addictive disorders, while simultaneously demonstrating how their approach fits into the larger continuum of care. The authors highlight the need to address stigma and discrimination and recognize the shifting legal and sociopolitical contexts of substance use and nonchemical addictions. Whether students, clinical novices, or seasoned professionals, readers will find their own thinking and behavior changed as they become empowered to provide more efficient, effective treatment."--John F. Kelly, PhD, ABPP, Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in the Field of Addiction Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Founder and Director, Recovery Research Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital "This timely successor to the classic book on CBT for addictive disorders is replete with proven practices, case reports, and innovative supplemental interventions. This is a practical, useful guidebook for clinicians. Kudos to the authors!"--Donald Meichenbaum, PhD, Research Director, Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment “The addictions field has long needed an updated guide to the cognitive-behavioral approach to treating substance use disorders, because evaluating beliefs is a central feature of diagnosing and treating these problems. Who better to provide such a resource than Liese and Beck, two of the pioneers? This is a very welcome and valuable resource for clinicians working with persons who have addictive disorders.”--Mark B. Sobell, PhD, ABPP, President's Distinguished Professor, and Linda C. Sobell, PhD, ABPP, President's Distinguished Professor, College of Psychology, Nova Southeastern University-This book will benefit anyone seeking to provide effective treatment for addictions. Book SynopsisThis book provides the first comprehensive guide to enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E), the leading empirically supported treatment for eating disorders in adults. Written with the practitioner in mind, the book demonstrates how this transdiagnostic approach can be used with the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice. Christopher Fairburn and colleagues describe in detail how to tailor CBT-E to the needs of individual patients, and how to adapt it for patients who require hospitalization. Also addressed are frequently encountered co-occurring disorders and how to manage them. Reproducible appendices feature the Eating Disorder Examination interview and questionnaire. CBT-E is recognized as a best practice for the treatment of adult eating disorders by the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).Trade Review"With his evidence-based, 'enhanced' treatment, Fairburn takes CBT to a new level. This book is written explicitly for clinicians, who will find the clearly written, practical guidance invaluable. Of particular interest are the authoritative description of the psychopathology of eating disorders and the lucid analysis of the management and treatment of underweight patients and those with multiple comorbidities. This is the definitive clinical account of CBT for eating disorders."--G. Terence Wilson, PhD, Oscar K. Buros Professor of Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey"Over the past 30 years, Fairburn has made immense contributions to our understanding and treatment of patients with eating disorders. This timely, clearly written, immensely informative, and very user-friendly book provides just what the clinician needs--a practical guide to all phases of treatment. Outlining his transdiagnostic model, Fairburn describes the processes that underlie all eating disorders and gives specific examples of how to assess, educate, and help patients with any eating disorder. Treatment is divided into stages, with clear guidelines for exactly what to say or do. This book will quickly become the preferred clinical guide in the eating disorders field. Fairburn and his colleagues should be commended for bringing state-of-the-art research to state-of-the-art practice. Bravo!"--Robert L. Leahy, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York Presbyterian Hospital"Another milestone by the field’s foremost pioneer, this book explains how to treat eating disorders in exquisite detail, and does so with a rich theoretical and empirical foundation as its basis. This will be the authoritative volume for many years to come."--Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, Robert L. Book SynopsisThis compassionate book presents dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a proven psychological intervention that Marsha M. Linehan developed specifically for the impossible situations of life--and which she and Elizabeth Cohn Stuntz now apply to the unique challenges of cancer for the first time. *How can you face the fear, sadness, and anger without being paralyzed by them? *Is it possible to hold on to hope without being in denial? *How can you nurture supportive relationships when you have barely enough energy to take care of yourself? Learn powerful DBT skills that can help you make difficult treatment decisions, manage overwhelming emotions, speak up for your needs, and tolerate distress. The stories and collective wisdom of other cancer patients and survivors illustrate the coping skills and show how you can live meaningfully, even during the darkest days.Trade Review"I will always remember the exact moment I received my first diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as my second diagnosis 15 years later. Over the years, I have nourished myself emotionally and intellectually by reading books on the challenges of living with cancer. None has had a greater impact than Coping with Cancer. This book is a treasure trove of tools and skill sets that can be life changing as you navigate the road ahead. It is beautifully written in a personal, authentic, totally relatable voice. It holds a special place on my shelf--as I predict it will on yours!"--Debbie L., New York City "This book is absolutely fantastic--it will be so very impactful and helpful. I am thrilled to have this widely available."--William S. Breitbart, MD, Jimmie C. Holland Chair in Psychiatric Oncology; Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center “In my 30-plus years as an oncology social worker, many books on living with cancer have crossed my desk. Books on this topic tend to be based on either personal experience or professional know-how; this guide is an excellent combination of the two and perfect to help you feel more in control and manage the uncertainty of living with a cancer diagnosis.”--Sara Goldberger, MSSW, ACSW, LCSW-R, cancer survivor and President, Association of Oncology Social Workers "I am deeply grateful to the authors for this respectful, compassionate, very practical guide. There was nothing like this book when my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 1954, back when people would not even say 'the C-word.' In fact, there has been nothing like it until now! As the survivor of two aggressive cancers myself, I wish I had had this book when I was diagnosed. The authors provide a manageable, step-wise approach to coping with an individual and interpersonal disaster. They draw on knowledge from both DBT and psychoanalysis to produce a welcome, creative synthesis."--Nancy McWilliams, PhD, ABPP, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey “As a DBT clinician and cancer survivor/fighter myself, I rely on the skills in this book to face my diagnosis, treatments, and uncertainties, and to continue engaging in my personal and professional life. This book is an invaluable resource for patients, loved ones, and support groups facing the emotional rollercoaster of a cancer diagnosis."--Seth Axelrod, PhD, Director of DBT Services and Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Yale–New Haven Psychiatric Hospital "An important book for us all to read. It is practical, actionable, down to earth, and wise."--Rev. Joan Halifax, Abbot, Upaya Zen Center, and author of Standing at the Edge-In this exceptionally well-written book, this expert duo conveys compassion, empathy and encouragement as they walk the reader through a host of different behavioral and introspective coping techniques. It reads like a step-by-step guide to the phases of coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis and feeling effective in negotiating one's own needs. While DBT may be intimidating for some psycho-oncology clinicians because of the level of certification involved as well as the skills groups and supports inherent in formal DBT Programs, this book makes DBT approachable for clinicians and cancer patients alike….The first-person writing of this book conveys a warmth and ease that is inviting. It strikes the right note between being compassionate without being sentimental and direct without being judgmental. Furthermore, the book brings important DBT skills to life using authentic patient examples and affirmations that are balanced, genuine and transformational. This book and its skills are worth adding to your wheelhouse.--Association of Oncology Social Work, 10/20/2021ƒƒThe book gives wise guidance on how to reduce stress, make better decisions, protect important relationships, and increase overall well-being while fighting off the disease--all of which can support a better prognosis, too….This advice is useful for anyone going through difficult times, health-related or not. We could all be more mindful, offer ourselves more self-compassion, be better factcheckers, treat our support networks kindly, and search for meaning in life. The book, though geared to cancer survivors, really speaks to us all.--Greater Good Magazine, 5/21/2021Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Dealing with the News That You Have Cancer 2. • Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy

Guilford Publications Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom pioneering therapist Cathy A. Malchiodi, this book synthesizes the breadth of research on trauma and the brain and presents an innovative framework for treating trauma through the expressive arts. The volume describes powerful ways to tap into deeply felt bodily and sensory experiences as a foundation for safely exploring emotions, memories, and personal narratives. Rich clinical examples illustrate the use of movement, sound, play, art, and drama with children and adults. Malchiodi's approach not only enables survivors to express experiences that defy verbalization, but also helps them to transform and integrate the trauma, regain a sense of aliveness, and imagine a new future. Purchasers get access to a companion website where they can download and print reproducible tools from the book in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size, as well as full-color versions of 26 figures.Trade Review“This book is at once encyclopedic in scope and profoundly poetic, meticulously observed and heartfelt--as scientific as it is creative. Malchiodi shows us how the legacy of trauma comprises not only distressing memories and disturbing thoughts, but also heartbreaking, gut-wrenching sensory experiences. Throughout history, just about every culture has coped with trauma by activating collective rhythms, sounds, music, improvisation and dramatic enactments, storytelling, and other ways of self-soothing and reconnecting with community. Malchiodi masterfully demonstrates how the expressive arts can mobilize the body and fire the imagination, and thereby help to restore vitality, self-efficacy, mastery, and self-expression."--Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD, author of The Body Keeps the Score; Founder and President, Trauma Research Foundation, Boston, Massachusetts "For those of us who believe that imagination is at the core of what it is to be human, expressive arts therapies are obvious tools in the process of addressing mental disorders and psychic pain. This book takes a systematic, rigorous, highly informative approach to exploring how therapies that lean on the human ability to create and depict experience can take an individual beyond a history of adversity and trauma. This is the best introduction to expressive arts therapies for trauma that I've seen; it will be of immense value to anyone who is engaged in learning about these interventions or who just wants to find out how and why they can be so very effective."--Peter Fonagy, OBE, FMedSci, FBA, FAcSS, Head, Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, University College London, United Kingdom; Chief Executive, Anna Freud Centre "We are seeing a momentous shift in therapeutic approaches that help treat distressed individuals--the inclusion of the living, sensing, knowing body. This book offers a vital contribution by incorporating painting, dance, theatre, music, and more into the trauma therapy armamentarium. It is a clear guide both for therapists and educators who already utilize expressive arts and for all those who want to expand their depth of practice."--Peter A. Levine, PhD, Founder, Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, Boulder, Colorado "This truly groundbreaking text is what the field has been waiting for! It is the first resource to thread together interpersonal neurobiological research on trauma with the role that expressive arts modalities can play in facilitating posttraumatic growth. Especially important is the systemic, culturally informed social justice perspective within which Malchiodi contextualizes her work. The book presents a healing-centered approach that embraces the intrinsic human capacity to use visual arts, movement, music, song, the written and spoken word, and drama for self- and co-regulation and mutual empowerment. We will adopt this book as a core text with specific relevance to our courses in Psychological Assessment and Creative Arts Therapy, Family and Couples Dynamics, and Expressive Arts and Trauma."--Shoshana Simons, PhD, RDT, Program Chair and Professor, Expressive Arts Therapy, California Institute of Integral Studies "This is the most important book I have read recently. Malchiodi provides powerful evidence for the significance of the expressive arts in trauma healing, making this an essential resource for all students and practitioners in the helping professions. The volume deepens current theory as well as breaking new ground. It places the individual engaged in creative expression as the authority--or, at the very least, a co-creator with the therapist--in healing action. Malchiodi names the expressive arts as a form of social action, and her book has worldwide relevance across all age levels. This is a brilliant book that builds on what we already know from indigenous therapies--the 'ancient university'--for healing trauma in individuals, families, and communities."--Judy Atkinson, PhD, Emeritus Professor and former Head, Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples, Southern Cross University, Australia "This book is poised to become the defining manual for expressive arts therapists and a key source of inspiration for those trained in 'talk therapies' only. It is exciting reading. The book is deeply informed by neurobiology, trauma theories, research, and decades of clinical practice--the crossover between creative and body-focused approaches has never before been discussed in this breadth. The book abundantly illustrates creative strategies to enhance relationships, safety, self-regulation, resilience, mindfulness, meaning making, and posttraumatic growth. Body-based, healing-focused arts modalities have undeniably found their place in psychotherapy."--Cornelia Elbrecht, MA, AThR, SEP, REAT, Institute for Sensorimotor Art Therapy, Australia "Compelling evidence attests to the value of the expressive therapies as a treatment of choice for psychological trauma. Malchiodi offers practical, science-supported treatment strategies, illustrated by sensitive clinical vignettes from decades of experience. Without ever losing sight of the therapeutic relationship, the book emphasizes the action-oriented nature of the expressive therapies and their power to enhance self-regulation and communicate difficult emotional content. Written through a contemporary lens, and peppered with pop culture references, this text is an accessible staple for any graduate art therapy training classroom, and will be appreciated by all clinicians interested in holistic, whole-body care."--Juliet L. King MA, ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC, Associate Professor of Art Therapy, The George Washington University; Adjunct Associate Professor of Neurology, Indiana University School of Medicine "Malchiodi has written the comprehensive work on trauma treatment and the expressive arts. Moving case descriptions demonstrate the power of images, movement, and music to transform the legacy of the past."--Janina Fisher, PhD, psychotherapist, consultant, and trainer, Oakland, California-This book is thought provoking and reminds us that how and why therapists do what they do can make all the difference in patients achieving health, feelings of safety, and self-efficacy. This well-written contribution to the expressive arts is a must-read….The book is a blend of real-life trauma casework, seminal references and research, and the author's own honed intuition into patient needs for expression. From beginning to end, objectives are met and readers are left in awe of individuals' humanness and capacity for resilience when given the right tools and experiences….This book is a delight to read. This author is committed to a process of learning, growing, and becoming positively alive through self-expression. I was left heavy-hearted with real-life story reminders of how brutality can crush the human spirit and experience. Thank goodness the weight was lifted by an innovative exploration into patient/client safety, reparation, and resilience and a brilliant, effective provision of well-thought-out information and activities.--Doody's Review Service, 07/10/2020Table of ContentsPreface 1. PCCS Books Tales of Unknowing: Therapeutic Encounters from

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisErnesto Spinelli is one of the leading exponents existential therapy today and one of its most brilliant practitioners. Rather than expounding a set of theories, Spinelli here gives an account of some of the most unforgettable therapeutic encounters that he has experienced during his professional life. His method comes to life in a way that is compelling and often profoundly moving. These stories of conflict and anxiety derived from human relationships illustrate the existential concern with 'being in the world' and act as catalysts to challenge the reader's personal experience even if he or she has had no direct experience of therapy. Told with an Oliver Sacks - like skill, these encounters introduce us to Mr Jones who refused to grow old gracefully, to moody and introverted Amanda who believed she had been given the wrong body, to Jim the octogenarian who lived in two time zones and to Giles whose obsessive identification with Einstein meant that his sexual activity was like a 'living mathematics' full of enthralling permutations. In the course of this book, Spinelli also tackles head on the last great taboo of therapeutic practice - sexual attraction between therapist and client. In Spinelli's previous and highly acclaimed book "Demystifying Therapy", he began the process of peeling away the layers of mystery that surround therapeutic practice. Now, with astonishing effectiveness, he explains the core of his work and why the existential approach is the way forward in the treatment of the psychological condition. This is not the way of psychotherapeutic certainty and reductionism. It is a way of 'Un-knowing'.Trade ReviewHis modesty inclines me to believe that he is a therapist who can be trusted.' Anthony Storr 'To a certain extent every attempt to translate lived experience onto paper is doomed to failure, and it takes not only a skilled writer but also a skilful practitioner to elicit in the reader some of the sense of humanity, immediacy and reality of the original relationship while not retreating into sentimentality and narcissism ... Spinelli's book is difficult to put down and one is continually reminded with vivid cliarity of the personal and universal dilemas of the interlocking of normal and therapeutic life.' This clear, authoritative, exceptionally practical guide empowers therapists with a roadmap for offering this powerful therapy to their clients. The authors are second to none in their field; they have taken an already excellent book and improved it further with this second edition. BA offers the possibility for hundreds of millions of people not only to recover from depression, but also to build a better life with and beyond depression."--Willem Kuyken, PhD, Ritblat Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science, University of Oxford, United Kingdom "In its second edition, this book remains the foundational guide to the principles and practices of BA. The authors masterfully weave compelling clinical narratives into a crisp description of ways to interrupt the low interest, fatigue, and withdrawal that are inherent in the vicious cycle of depression. BA takes us back to fundamental operant principles of behavior change while also acknowledging the bidirectional influence of the patient's internal and external environment. The authors create a space for the clinical integration of the literature on emotional regulation, rumination, and mindful presence. Beginning and experienced clinicians alike will improve their evidence-based practice by applying the knowledge in this book. It will serve as an important source of information for graduate students before, during, and after their practicum and internship placements."--Robin B. Jarrett, PhD, ABPP, Professor of Psychiatry and Elizabeth H. Penn Professorship in Clinical Psychology, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center "Like the ancient game of Go, the principles of BA are simple, but their successful application demands study, practice, skill, and strategy. I have used Behavioral Activation for Depression as one of the assigned texts in my graduate course on behavior therapy since 2013. This text consistently receives positive reviews from my students and helps them establish the skills to effectively carry out BA in their practicum placements. The second edition retains the original work's clear exposition and guiding principles, while adding an important discussion of the transdiagnostic movement in psychotherapy, among other updates. This second edition is an invaluable read for beginning clinicians in all the helping disciplines and a useful review for experienced therapists."--Alvin E. House, PhD, Department of Psychology, Illinois State University-When I saw that the authors released a second edition of their book on the topic, I knew I had to read it. It is excellent! They've added chapters on transdiagnostic practice and new treatment settings. They've also included new tools to help quantify and gauge progress in behavioral activation. I also like some of the shifts in language in the second edition. There is an increased emphasis on compassion….I wholeheartedly recommend it.--Advances in Cognitive Therapy Newsletter, 06/08/2022ƒƒThis work is clearly a labor of love, and its strengths shine through. Book SynopsisThis book deals with what is perhaps the central question in therapy - who is the therapist? And how does that actually come across and manifest itself in the therapeutic relationship? A good deal of the thinking about this in psychoanalysis has come under the heading of countertransference. Much of the thinking in the humanistic approaches has come under such headings as empathy, genuineness, nonpossessive warmth, presence, personhood. These two streams of thinking about the therapist's own self provide much material for the bulk of the book - but other aspects of the therapist also enter the picture, including the way a therapist is trained, and uses supervision, in order to make fuller use of her or his own reactions, responses and experience in working with any one client. The book is aimed primarily at counsellors and psychotherapists, or trainees in these disciplines. It has been written in a way that is accessible to students at all levels, but it is also of particularTable of ContentsSeries editor's prefacePreface IntroductionThe instrumental selfThe authentic selfThe transpersonal self Training and supervisionA dialogue: the authors discuss the therapist's use of selfReferencesIndex.

Book SynopsisDo you beat yourself up after making a mistake? Do you treat yourself worse than you would a good friend? If these questions strike a chord, it''s likely that you contend with unhealthy self-criticism. This mental habit is the cause of so much emotional suffering, and lies at the root of most of the problems that psychotherapists and counsellors encounter. In Everyone''s a Critic, psychotherapist Julia Bueno shares seven case studies, inspired by her practice. They explore some of the reasons why we learn to turn against ourselves, encourage readers to be more curious about their self-critic, and inspire a practice of greater self-compassion instead.Praise for Everyone''s a Critic:''Julia Bueno explores such an important topic, and one that holds so many people back: our inner critic. Book SynopsisDepressive Disorders uses an integrative view to explore the etiology of depression, its development, and maintenance and highlights contemporary unified psychotherapy approaches. The text includes case examples that illustrate how to use integrated and unified psychotherapy approaches to help patients with depressive disorders. Dr. Koenigsberg demonstrates how research-based approaches may be used to treat individuals with different types of depressive disorders, such as major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, cyclothymia, and adjustment disorder with depression. It encourages therapists to recognize that the complex themes of the depressive disorders may be more fully realized within the context of integrated and unified psychotherapy perspectives. This text is essential for early-career and seasoned therapists, graduate students, and psychotherapy researchers who wish to explore the past and contemporary history of psychoTrade Review"Rates of depression in children, adolescents, and young adults have been exponentially increasing in recent years, thus there is a profound need to not only improve our understanding of clinical depression but also promote standards of care based on evidence-based treatments and compassion. In her book, Depressive Disorders: Integrated and Unified Psychotherapy Approaches, Dr. Koenigsberg provides a comprehensive review of the literature and guidance for effective psychotherapies. The book focuses on the etiology of emotional disorders and integrated and unified treatments that practitioners can use in the treatment of patients with depressive disorders. This book raises the bar."Vladimir Nacev, Ph.D., ABPP, Board Certified in Clinical Psychology, Chair of the Board of Directors, ABPP-Foundation"With recent skyrocketing increases in the rates of depression, a book that strives to understand the relationship between the etiology and treatment of depressive disorders from integrated and unified perspectives is a critically important contribution to the field of psychotherapy. Dr. Koenigsberg’s most recent book draws from a vast array of different therapeutic approaches and is quite comprehensive in scope. Offering a sound rationale for the use of integrative and unified treatments from a variety of evidence-based approaches for each of the depressive disorders—as well as a special section on depression in the age of COVID-19—this book will be of great value to clinicians, supervisors, researchers and students of mental health disciplines."Andre Marquis, Ph.D., University of Rochester, author of Integral Psychotherapy: A Unifying Approach"The training of psychotherapists in the US has traditionally been focused on ensuring that students adhered to a particular theoretical model or orientation, and to reject consideration of alternative methods or clinical conceptualizations. In her new book, Dr. Koenigsberg essentially provides 'permission' to therapists to relinquish long held and essentially unnecessary resistance to using methodological flexibility in the pursuit of caring for their patients with depression. In a methodical and comprehensive way, the author carefully lays out fundamental concepts underlying each depressive disorder, including etiology and diagnostic process, describes and contrasts various traditional treatment models, and then offers optimal methodologies for their integration within the context of psychotherapy case examples. Rather than encouraging the therapist to limit the way one analyzes and develops an understanding of a patient, it illuminates the availability of the integrative process by which the clinician can best help depressed patients: that is, by treating them with what they truly need."Mark Paris, Ph.D., ABPP, Consultative evaluator, Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Administration; former mental health policy analyst, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs)"In her new work, Judy Koenigsberg eloquently and comprehensively guides mental health professionals on a journey beyond single-school, monotherapy approaches toward a broader, integrative approach to the treatment of depressive disorders. From a solid discussion of the etiology of depression and the history of underlying theory, to the nuanced examination of integrative and unified approaches within this disease model, Koenigsberg organizes the material in a manner that optimizes clinical synthesis and promotes practical applications across a continuum of depressive disorders – Major Depressive Dx, Persistent Depressive Dx, Bipolar Dx, Cyclothymic Dx, and Adjustment Dx with Depressed Mood. Lastly, she illustrates how an integrative, unified therapeutic approach may be even more essential in the context of a post-pandemic world that has seen escalations in the prevalence, as well as the severity, of depression. I highly recommend this timely and invaluable tool for all mental health providers and allied health professionals."Michelle Rodoletz, Ph.D., co-founder and director of HealthForumOnline.com; licensed clinical psychologist; former assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC); former adjunct faculty at the Temple University School of Medicine faculty; and former associate director of the Psychosocial and Behavioral Medicine Program at FCCC"Dr. Koenigsberg’s book is a must read and an outstanding resource for experienced and early career clinicians. Truly seasoned clinicians have a variety of techniques available to them and do not rely on any one technique to treat a depressed patient. They selectively choose a method or combine methods that are appropriate to the individual patient’s needs. This book presents empirical evidence in support of such an approach as well as a comprehensive review of treatment models. Early career practitioners will use this book, which is rich in research and clinical case vignettes, to understand how Integrative and Unified psychotherapy can provide more effective treatment of depression and help them gain more maturity in their work. This book teaches them how to custom tailor psychotherapy to the needs of the client rather than molding the client to a single treatment modality. Dr. Koenigsberg’s book is a valuable resource for teachers and clinical supervisors who want to expand their students’ repertoire facilitating a quicker advancement into becoming more effective therapists better able to deal with complexity."Terrence Koller, PhD, ABPP, Past Executive Director of the Illinois Psychological Association, Current Legislative Liaison of the Illinois Psychological Association, Past President of IPATable of ContentsPart I: Integrated and Unified Psychotherapy Approaches 1. Including influential readings of Sophocles' Antigone and Elizabethan courtly love poetry in relation to female sexuality, The Ethics of Psychoanalysis remains a powerful and controversial work that is still argued over today by the likes of Judith Butler and Slavoj Žižek. Book SynopsisBased on George Engel's model, The Biopsychosocial Formulation Manual presents ways to help psychiatry residents and students effectively gather and organize patient data to arrive at a complete mental health history in a limited timeframe. While most current models only take one factor into account, Campbell and Rohrbaugh emphasize and analyze three essential components (biological, social, and psychological). The process of identifying pertinent data for each component of the biopsychosocial formulation is explicated in detail. A separate section outlines how to use the biopsychosocial formulation to generate treatment recommendations. This volume includes a complete package for practicing the biopsychosocial method; this easy-to-use guide includes a data record sheet and downloadable resources to facilitate organization and assessment, appealing to both the psychiatric professional and the trainee.Trade Review"Drs. Campbell and Rohrbaugh have written a highly readable, practical, balanced, thoughtful and helpful guide to biopsychosocial formulation. It is sure to become one of the classics in the field of clinical psychiatry education." - Dr. Anthony Rostain, MD, MA, Director of Education, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania, USA"Both authors are practicing and academic psychiatrists, and together they have designed a manual that offers a practical approach to organizing the wealth of data obtained from patients into some meaningful formulation. They have created a unique format that ensures appropriate emphasis of all three components delineated in Engel's original model (biological, psychological, and social). Even the most experienced clinician may discover that there are gaps in his or her typical formulation of patient complaints and, therefore, may find the manual useful in assisting him or her in more productively using the data collected. • The Authority of Tenderness

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis insightful and beautifully written work explores nonlinear processes of recovery of the loss of Self. The inherent healing power of hard-earned, wholehearted self-acceptance is conceived through the authority of tenderness. The book is the final volume in The Fifth Principle trilogy (the second book being Scum), which chronicled, through the course of one boy's lifetime, the methods of a mind which is not a mind, in its efforts to prevail under oppressive circumstances. The Authority of Tenderness comes at the end of the journey, is written by the adult self of the child, and uses poetic vignettes, references to foundational psychoanalytic literature and analyses of critical treatment situations to convey the experiences of someone who has been both patient and analyst. The book offers a vivid psychotherapeutic perspective for clinicians, trainees, students and general readers alike.Trade Review"In the trilogy that concludes with The Authority of Tenderness, Paul Williams proves himself a fearless explorer of some of the darkest reaches of the human psyche." – JM Coetzee"This third book of Paul Williams’ trilogy—a book at once fiction, nonfiction and memoir—is like no other work I have ever read. Williams’ use of language unobtrusively achieves the music of poetry and the enlightened absurdity of Beckett. Even in the most dark, most disturbing parts of this book, there lives a thread of hope that is safeguarded by the potential of the human spirit for ‘the authority of tenderness’. This book offers an experience in reading not to be missed." – Thomas Ogden"This final volume in the trilogy by Paul Williams is a searing journey into the heart of darkness. As a psychoanalyst who has treated disturbed patients throughout his career, Williams shares his unique and brilliant way of being with these individuals that helps them to live with themselves and with others. His creative use of the concept of tenderness is novel and original in this context. I highly recommend this gem of a book for all psychoanalysts and psychotherapists of patients who struggle to emerge from the darkness." – Glen O. Gabbard, MD"Each sentence of this book is constructed with exceptional depth and acuity. Traumatized individuals bear the unbearable, the authentic self exposed to unthinkable anxiety. Paul Williams reflects on his experience and that as a psychoanalyst of severely traumatized patients. His path to the patient’s authentic self through the authority exercised by the clinician’s tenderness is profoundly moving, of great clinical value not only to psychoanalysts but to all individuals who wonder about the problematic nature of human existence." – Franco De Masi"Donald Winnicott wrote of a state of inward being that requires the utmost privacy. Intrusions into this most intimate of places can result in a violent destruction of personality. The result can be a total catastrophe. This is surely among the most important themes in psychoanalysis. Paul Williams, writing out of personal experience as well as out of a long-time experience as a psychoanalyst, considers what Yeats called ‘the deep heart’s core’ with a sonority and depth of feeling that puts me in mind of masterly music making." – Eric Rhode, author and retired psychotherapistTable of ContentsSolitude 2. Book SynopsisA great effort has been made in contemporary Western culture to move beyond jealousy in our private lives. This collection takes the temperature of jealousy today â how does it show up in the clinic? Does this differ from how it used to? What can be said of how jealousy functions both psychically and socially?Clinicians and writers working from within a Lacanian psychoanalytic framework explore the concept and unpack not only its numerous guises and forms, but its founding effects both on the level of the individual and the social. The question as to where jealousy is located today leads to a deeper look at the feelingâs origins: its close relation to identification and with envy, its interaction with early infantile complexes, its constant interplay with the social realm and its systems of governance, and its complex expression of ambivalence towards the maternal. This book is for anyone interested in psychoanalysis, be they readers or historians of psychoanalysis, or clinicians looking for ways to approach jealousy in their practice. It is also for anyone who knows what it is to suffer jealousy, which if Freud was right, is most of us.

Book SynopsisIn Myers-Briggs Typology vs Jungian Individuation: Overcoming One-Sidedness in Self and Society, Steve Myers unravels the century-long misinterpretation of Jung's seminal text, Psychological Types, to show how Jung's thinking offers solutions to the conflicts that have torn apart our societies. By challenging the popular interpretation of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and similar instruments, Myers argues that we have not only missed Jung's main proposition, but our contemporary interpretation runs counter to it. Myers aims to rediscover the overlooked argument of Jung's Psychological Types and make it of practical relevance to contemporary issues. He intends to refocus rather than discard Myers-Briggs typology, showing that there are further stages of development after becoming a type and that typological principles have a much broader application. Raising queries about the way typology is used in contemporary society, Myers uses liteTrade Review"Imaginative, captivating, and thoughtful, Myers provides a useful look into the malaise of contemporary culture and psychology. Through the lens of how a popular psychological tool (the MBTI) magnifies one sidedness in individuals, Myers explores the question of whether we can use Jung’s real purpose of psychological types to identify and maximize the energy of opposites to build a healthier world." - Roger R. Pearman, Past President, International Association for Psychological Type; recipient of the Isabel Myers Research Award and the Association for Psychological Type Lifetime Contribution Award; researcher, coach and consultant"The central thesis of the book, Jung’s explanation of human one-sidedness, came as a revelation to me. Myers sets out to unravel a very complex story, and he does it with panache. He lays out what is meant by the transcendent function in such a fashion that it can seem like a realisable thing. He works through examples in our recent history of how transcendent results occur (and don’t occur) because of attitudes major players have." - Wynn Rees, former President, British Association of Psychological Type"In a beautifully readable style, Steve Myers clarifies the connection between Myers-Briggs typology and Jungian individuation. He goes much further though by applying typological theory, spiced with contemporary psychological developments, to a conflicted political arena. Myers uses copious examples to illustrate, such as Nelson Mandela, the ‘Chuckle Brothers’ (Trimble and McGuiness from Northern Ireland), as well as more contemporary examples such as Trump and Brexit. This is undoubtedly an important book for our times." - Mathew Mather, author of The Alchemical Mercurius; director of the Certificate in Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy and lecturer at Limerick School of Art and Design, Ireland"Susan Sontag once said, ‘The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions.’ In a sense, that's what this book sets out to do -- to reframe the way Jung's type theory has been understood, thus to provide answers that are larger than the questions that are usually asked. By accomplishing this, the book stands as an application of its thesis: that the transcendent function, which Jung intended as the beating heart of psychological type, moves one outside oppositions that cannot be cognitively reconciled -- not just opposing type functions, but opposing models, opposing political standpoints, imagination vs. common sense, adaptation vs. individuation. I learned a great deal from this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Jung, psychological types, the MBTI, and a practical understanding of one-sidedness -- its contribution to the moral problems of our time and what can be done to solve them." - Lenore Thomson, M.Div., author of Personality Type: An Owner's Manual and former managing editor of Quadrant: The Journal of Contemporary Jungian Thought"Myers-Briggs Typology vs Jungian Individuation raises fundamental issues and challenges current practices that concern all type/MBTI practitioners. If we are to truly tap into the potential of Jung's theory of psychological types, Steve Myers' book is a must read." - Danielle Poirier, MBTI qualifying faculty member, trainer and author of The Magnificent 16"By challenging us to think beyond the limits of typologies, Steve skilfully guides us through an understanding of Jung’s problem of opposites. Using artful metaphors and insights drawn from contemporary global events, this insightful book calls us to confront and transcend one-sidedness in ourselves and the institutions we are part of." - Ray Linder, Leadership Development consultant and trainer"Steve Myers has written an important and timely book. Not only does he do a masterful job of explaining Carl Jung’s concept of the problem of one-sidedness in Western society, he also corrects the widespread misunderstanding of Jung’s seminal work, Psychological Types. While doing so, Myers also provides powerful examples of how moving beyond one-sidedness in our individual and collective development offers a better way to be and relate to each other. Given the polarized nature of much of contemporary discourse, this is a timely message indeed." - Scott Campbell, international speaker, consultant, and author"Imaginative, captivating, and thoughtful, Myers provides a useful look into the malaise of contemporary culture and psychology. Given the polarized nature of much of contemporary discourse, this is a timely message indeed." - Scott Campbell, international speaker, consultant, and authorTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: The type problem; Chapter 3: The solution; Chapter 4: The transcendent function; Chapter 5: Many forms of opposite; Chapter 6: Individuals, relationships, groups, society; Chapter 7: The caduceus; Chapter 8: Two movements; Chapter 9: Axiom of Maria; Chapter 10; Four perspectives; Chapter 11: One-sidedness and analytical psychology; Chapter 12: The future of reconciliation; Appendix A: Prometheus and Epimetheus; Appendix B: Psychological Types; Index

Book SynopsisPresenting both a theoretical foundation and proven strategies for helping caregivers become more attuned and responsive to their young children's emotional needs (ages 0-5), this is the first comprehensive presentation of the Circle of Security (COS) intervention. The book lucidly explains the conceptual underpinnings of COS and demonstrates the innovative attachment-based assessment and intervention strategies in rich clinical detail, including three chapter-length case examples. Reproducible forms and handouts can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size. COS is an effective research-based program that has been implemented throughout the world with children and parents experiencing attachment difficulties. The authors are corecipients of the 2013 Bowlby-Ainsworth Award, presented by the New York Attachment Consortium, for developing and implementing COS. See also the authors' related parent guide: Raising a Secure Child: How Circle of Security Trade Review"Brilliant, creative, and transformative are words that don't fully capture the true power of this approach. The authors have woven attachment theory into a research-based, innovative intervention that helps infants and their parents move toward security and a life of resilience and well-being. Soak in the wisdom of these masters and you'll be forever grateful--I certainly am. The book provides an intricate yet practical therapeutic exploration infused with the dedication and insights of its authors."--Daniel J. Siegel, MD, Clinical Professor, UCLA School of Medicine; Executive Director, Mindsight Institute; author of Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain "What a beautiful book! Insightful, compassionate, emotionally moving, crystal clear, eminently useful--this book offers the best combination of excellent science, deep clinical experience, and coherent guidance for therapists that I have ever encountered. A 'must read' for anyone who wishes to understand and promote effective parenting."--Phillip R. Shaver, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of California, Davis"In this important book, the authors provide a masterful translation of complex concepts into an approach to enhancing attachments that makes intuitive sense and is supported by effectiveness research. The sensitive use of video enables parents to see themselves in a new light and gain awareness of how they enact their own early experiences in raising their children. COS frees the parent to respond to the child's needs for protection and support in ways that build trust and promote self-confidence. The gems of wisdom coupled with practical intervention strategies are a gift for any clinician seeking to enhance parenting and prevent child maltreatment."--Alicia F. Lieberman, PhD, Irving B. Harris Endowed Chair in Infant Mental Health and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco"COS is solidly based on attachment theory and research. With a surprising combination of simplicity, clinical relevance, and academic rigor, this book effectively teaches the reader what children need for secure attachment and clarifies what might stand in the way of parents being able to respond to these needs. For clinicians and students alike, the book brings to life what is viewed, both nationally and internationally, as the cutting edge of early parent-child intervention programs."--Jude Cassidy, PhD, Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and Professor of Psychology, University of Maryland, College Park "In my view, the Circle of Security (COS) is an approach that has changed the game….This intervention translates attachment research more meaningfully and more directly than anything we have seen before."--from the Foreword by Charles H. • DBT Teams

    Guilford Publications DBT Teams

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe treatment team is an essential component of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). This much-needed resource from Jennifer H. R. Sayrs and DBT originator Marsha M. Linehan explains how DBT teams work, ways in which they differ from traditional consultation teams, and how to establish an effective team culture. The book addresses the role of the DBT team leader; the structure of meetings; the use of DBT strategies within teams; identifying and resolving common team problems; and important functions before, during, and after suicide crises. User-friendly features include end-of-chapter exercises and reproducible handouts and forms. Purchasers get access to a Web page where they can download and print the reproducible materials in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size.Trade Review"In my experience, the team is the least focused-on and yet most critical component of the delivery of DBT. Working with clients with extremely challenging conditions can lead to burnout, helplessness, despair, and resignation. It is the role of the team to prevent that from happening--and teams need to adhere to the protocols and principles of DBT in order to function effectively. Sayrs and Linehan's book is clear, compassionate, methodical, and comprehensive. It provides essential practices for all consultation teams, whether newly formed or well established."--Blaise Aguirre, MD, Medical Director, 3East Dialectical Behavior Therapy program, McLean Hospital; Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School "A fabulous book. The principles and strategies for implementing a DBT team described in this volume are useful for all psychotherapists. Teams help prevent and address burnout, reduce drift, and promote learning, so that therapists can take their skills to the highest level. The list of team agreements alone is worth the price of the book! It includes items like: 'Be willing to call out the "elephant in the room" when others do not.'"--Jacqueline B. Persons, PhD, Director, Oakland Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center "It takes a village to really do DBT, yet creating that village is far from easy. Nothing in graduate or medical school prepared most of us to get emotionally vulnerable with peers, help colleagues find their way when they’re therapeutically lost, or speak directly about concerns that a particular patient is getting worse and not better. This book distills decades of experimentation and thinking about how to develop and sustain strong, vibrant DBT teams. Highly accessible, it breaks down the 'whats' and 'how-tos' of consultation teams into easy-to-follow steps and strategies. Each chapter concludes with practical exercises. Innovations include expanded team agreements and a thoughtful set of dialectical dilemmas for team leaders, as well as numerous clever team practices developed at the authors’ respective clinical settings."--Linda A. Dimeff, PhD, Director, Portland DBT Institute; Chief Scientific Officer and President, Evidence-Based Practice Institute, Seattle, Washington "A 'must have' for every DBT therapist and every DBT program. Sayrs and Linehan spell out in specific detail how to add the key treatment element that sets DBT apart from other therapies for extremely vulnerable populations. Finally, the guidebook we have been waiting for on how to set up effective teams and clarify the roles of the participants, how to run teams in ways that truly make a difference, and what to do when problems arise. It's all here, including reproducible forms, examples of what to say (and what not to say), and practice exercises. Your team will run better and you will be a better team member if you read and apply what is in this book."--Joan C. Russo, PhD, President, DBT–Linehan Board of Certification "This book shows how to accomplish the central task of the DBT consultation team--providing 'therapy for the therapist.' It is a comprehensive manual that is both deeply insightful and genuinely practical. Sayrs and Linehan describe the tools with which a group of DBT therapists create, structure, and conduct a consultation team; define meeting agendas and stick to them; balance dedication and rigor with vulnerability and flexibility; solve sticky and stubborn intrateam problems; and help each other with the ever-looming predicaments of suicide. The examples of problematic team functioning, with solutions brought from the authors’ own teams, are invaluable. This book is a brilliant synthesis, written in a straightforward manner by the best minds in DBT and studded with pearls of wisdom. It should be required reading for DBT newcomers and advanced clinicians alike."--Charles R. Swenson, MD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School "Practical and radically genuine, like a private DBT seminar tailored to the difficult and exhilarating work of DBT teams. I appreciate the clear guidelines and refreshingly straightforward advice and examples. Offering principles, not rules, this book is endlessly adaptable to the many settings where DBT is delivered and taught, and especially when exposure to traumatic content increases the risks of vicarious trauma and burnout. I will be pulling this book off the shelf often and will encourage all my colleagues and the students rotating through our program to read and use it."--Kathryn Kieran, MSN, Director of Nursing Operations, Hill Center for Women, McLean Hospital, Belmont, Massachusetts -Table of Contents1. Several important new chapters address the revised diagnostic criteria for PTSD, the establishment of a PTSD brain bank, treatment of comorbid disorders, the psychoneurobiology of resilience, and dissemination and implementation science. The volume provides excellent coverage of the most vital topics for clinicians and researchers. I would use it as a required text for our doctoral course titled Military Health Psychology."--Alan L. Peterson, PhD, ABPP, Krus Endowed Chair in Psychiatry and Director, STRONG STAR Consortium to Alleviate PTSD, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio "Once again, the Handbook meets its lofty goal of advancing our understanding of PTSD. This volume fully updates the field and is a cornucopia of synthesis, integration, and review of the cradle-to-grave issues involving PTSD. The examination of treatments at the family and community levels is especially important, given how we have seen families and communities so affected by world events. Book SynopsisThe leading guide to group-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has now been significantly revised with 70% new material, reflecting over 15 years of research and clinical advances. Too often, CBT training resources treat groups as simply an extension of individual therapy. Filling an important need, this text helps students and practitioners build essential skills for leveraging group process to optimize outcomes. Featuring sample dialogues, clinical pointers, and troubleshooting tips, the book provides practical answers to group leaders' most pressing questions. Effective protocols for treating specific disorders are presented, with a focus on CBT techniques and group process factors unique to each type of group. New to This Edition *Chapters on inpatient groups and mindfulness-based CBT. *Chapters on additional disorders: posttraumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. *Fully rewritten chapters on anxiety disorders, substance use Trade Review"Group CBT is similarly effective to individual CBT, but is more cost-effective and allows for more clients to be treated in a given period of time. Unfortunately, most evidence-based CBT protocols are developed for individual delivery, with only superficial instructions for how to deliver in groups. Bieling, McCabe, and Antony offer a much-needed corrective, expertly explaining how to set up and manage CBT groups for a range of presenting problems and disorders. A 'must have' for any clinician."--Peter J. Norton, PhD, School of Psychology, Counseling and Psychotherapy, Cairnmillar Institute, Melbourne, Australia "The majority of clinicians are still trained in doing CBT with individuals only, making this broad-ranging, comprehensive guide essential reading. The second edition has been revised throughout to include updates from the literature and to achieve the explicit aim of making the book more user friendly. Significant revisions reflect the latest advances in our understanding of the nature and treatment of psychological disorders, such as the merger of the various anxiety disorders into a single chapter, the incorporation of 'third-wave' approaches, and the chapter on transdiagnostic treatment in acute inpatient settings. This state-of-the-art book should be read by any clinician or student who wants to integrate CBT techniques with group process factors." --Simon A. Rego, PsyD, ABPP, Chief of Psychology, Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York; Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Albert Einstein College of Medicine-This is the book I would have liked to have been able to read when I started running CBT groups….A very valuable resource for professionals setting up and running CBT groups for a wide range of clients, as well as for professionals supervising CBT groups. The third edition of this book is a resource that every clinician would benefit from reading and drawing on in times of crisis. Rizvi, PhD, ABPP, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey "Through his remarkable, sustained 40-year career focused on studying and helping people who experience suicidal thoughts and behavior, Jobes has moved the field toward a more patient-centered approach. An emphasis on the patient's perspective and the clinical alliance is reflected in the four pillars of CAMS: empathy, collaboration, honesty, and suicide focus. Many examples of successful (and less optimal) client outcomes, helpful worksheets, frequently asked questions, and innovative applications, including using CAMS via telehealth, contribute to the book's clinical utility. Adoption of the comprehensive CAMS framework will help allay the anxiety that clinicians experience when treating suicidal clients. The wealth of clinical wisdom imparted throughout this book makes it a 'must read.'"--Anthony Spirito, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Alpert Medical School of Brown University "CAMS is arguably one of the most widely used approaches to clinical care for suicidal patients. Book SynopsisNot a typical biography, Ralph Steadman examines Freud using Freud's 1905 essay on Jokes and illustrates his points with 75 drawings. The result is a masterful interplay of text and illustration, visual and verbal puns, and unexpected insight. One genius takes on another. In what is a thoroughly atypical biography, Ralph Steadman examines Freud using his 1905 book The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious to illustrate his points with 75 illustrations. The result is a masterful interplay of text and illustration, visual and verbal puns, and unexpected insight. Sigmund Freud bursts defiantly and gleefully beyond the bounds of orthodox biography. It is a wildly humorous exercise in bending, stretching and speculating on the activities of the so-called Father of Psychoanalysis. Ralph Steadman wields his shrewd wit and fierce pen to highlight the ebbs and tides of Freud's life and career from early childhood to the moment of death. But there's a twist. Rich illustrations and witty text work hand in hand to transform each scene into a "joking situation," which the artist hilariously examines according to the techniques wielded by Freud himself in his 1905 book on humour and the unconscious mind. The result is a fantastic Freudian festival of visual and verbal puns, unexpected insights, and sheer intellectual enjoyment. Sigmund Freud is superbly illustrated with more than 50 major drawings and 25 vignettes by a renowned master of the pen. It remains one of the most original illustrated books of our times and a Ralph Steadman classic. AUTHOR: Ralph Steadman has been a cartoonist since 1956, starting as a caustic observer of Britain's political and social scene. He is well known as the illustrator of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Steadman's work appears regularly in newspapers and magazines, including Rolling Stone and the Atlantic Monthly, and his many published books include Tales of the Weirrd and Alice in Wonderland.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisLike a treasure chest, this resource overflows with valuable resources - information, ideas and techniques to inspire and support those working with children who have experienced relational and developmental trauma. Drawing on a range of therapeutic models including systemic, psychodynamic, trauma, sensory, neurobiological, neurocognitive, attachment, cognitive behavioural, and creative ideas, Dr Karen Treisman explains how we understand trauma and its impact on children, teens and their families. She details how it can be seen in symptoms such as nightmares, sleeping difficulties, emotional dysregulation, rage, and outbursts. Theory and strategies are accompanied by a treasure trove of practical, creative, and ready-to-use resources including over 100 illustrated worksheets and handouts, top tips, recommended sample questions, and photographed examples.Trade ReviewWhen we lift the lid on a child's trauma it can feel overwhelming and impossible to address. Dr Karen Treisman's accessible, insightful and resource laden book will change this for ever for every practitioner, therapist, parent and carer and the precious children they support. -- Jane Evans, Childhood Trauma & Parenting Expert, author of Cyril Squirrel Finds Out About Love and How Are You Feeling Today Baby Bear?Children are doers more than they are talkers, and when we join them in doing, we find we are able to discover the story at the child's pace. Dr Treisman has given us a wonderful book to help us to do this. Full of ideas, exercises and compassionate ways of joining with children to fully discover who they are, and to help them to manage difficulties that they are experiencing. This is grounded in the best of what we know about relational trauma. This book will enhance the most creative of us, and be a rich resource for those of us who doubt our own creativity. It will give all of us ways to go slower, to help children to feel safe enough to reveal their own story, and to find the confidence to allow us to share this story with their safe parents. Now healing can begin. My treasure box is certainly richer for having this book on my shelf. -- Dr. Kim S. Golding, Clinical Psychologist and authorAs a Treasure Box, Treisman has created exactly what it says on the tin. Embedded in the relational world of development, this book takes us on a journey of thoughtful, sensitive, creative and deeply moving interventions. The lives and minds of children and young people can only be enriched if we embed this magic in our work. -- John Simmonds, OBE, Director of Policy, Research and Development at CoramBAAF, LondonThis book is an extraordinary achievement. It is packed with myriad, tools, methods and suggestions that will be indispensable to therapists, parents and anyone working with traumatised kids. Most importantly, the book's simplicity is deceptive as every page is built on the firm foundations of the latest science and a deep understanding of the effects of developmental trauma. I predict this will be a book that trauma therapists will be scared to leave home without. -- Dr. Graham Music, Consultant Psychotherapist, Tavistock Clinic and author of Nurturing NaturesRelational trauma requires relational repair' says Dr Treisman throughout her book and it's a mantra worth repeating. Her book explains what relational repair really involves, from creating safety and regulation, to exploring complex and layered emotions to tackling rage and sleep disturbances. It is packed with ideas and materials to guide and support therapeutic conversations, much of which could be used by therapeutic parents. What I especially love is the combination of compassion both for child and parent and its insistence on a sound, scientific approach. The pictures, the pebbles, the glue and the glitter are all set within a robust trauma-informed framework that reflect the emotional complexity of building a meaningful relationship with a traumatised child. For those who labour at the coalface of relational repair, it is a nourishing read that will top up your therapeutic tank and make you feel just that little bit more encouraged and cherished and perhaps even vindicated. It deserves to be widely read by all those involved in supporting the healing of relationally traumatised children from commissioners, policy makers and academics right up to foster carers and adoptive parents. -- Sally Donovan OBE, editor for Adoption UK and author of 'No Matter What' and 'The Unofficial Guide to Adoptive Parenting'Are you working with traumatized children? Karen Treisman's book is a MUST read! -- Liana Lowenstein MSW, RSW, CPT-S, Registered Clinical Social Worker, Certified Play Therapist-Supervisor and Certified TF-CBT TherapistThis book is truly a treasure trove of ideas, resources, illustrations, and practical photocopiable worksheets. It is written in an accessible, engaging, and practitioner friendly way, with a real focus on the "how to". It combines the latest trauma, neuroscience, sensory, and attachment theories and then describes how to intervene with children in an engaging, creative, and multi-sensory way. The mantra of the book is "relational trauma requires relational repair"; and this ethos echoes throughout the entire book. The book covers the whole spectrum needing to be addressed in a developmental trauma context, from assessment, to strengths and resilience, to self-care, to specific presentations such as outbursts and nightmares; through to endings and goodbyes. This book is a MUST HAVE for mental health practitioners working with traumatized children. In fact, this is the best mental health book I have read in 2017! -- Liana LowensteinOverflowing with creative ideas and activities, the thing that makes this resource especially valuable is its sensitivity to the ever-present need for safe containment when using intervention. The author gently prompts our awareness of how creative ways of working can provide safe access to the treasures within, for the children so often hardest to reach. Logically organised and indexed, each section is held together by well-written, informative insights. -- Lisa Nel * BACP - Children, Young people & families *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisCounselling, therapy, and coaching always work with the use of language. With art-oriented approaches, the limitations of language can be overcome. One of the most important works of expressive arts therapy, Lösungskunst is now available in English translation. The key concept of intermodality- the authors' term for oscillation between art-analog methods- combines with the primary focus on resources and strong emphasis on solutions to lay the groundwork for the method that is as vital now as it was originally. The importance of imagination, artistic and aesthetic experience to mental wellbeing is showcased, challenging the common focus on the cognitive and emotional facets of mental health.In-depth case studies and explanations illuminate the origins and use of the theoretical frameworks, helping experienced practitioners and trainees alike to engage with the fundamental methods and concepts of expressive arts therapy.Trade ReviewThe seminal Solution Art is a welcome translation for many reasons. Readers are treated to a rare glimpse into the foundations of expressive arts therapy. And it validates what many of us now understand about the arts -- that experiencing the senses are key to the healing process. -- Cathy Malchiodi, PhD, author, Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy: Brain, Body, and Imagination in the Healing ProcessWhat a gift! This elegant, generous translation makes the wisdom of Lösungskunst available in English. As a helpful clarification and expansion of Principles and Practice of Expressive Arts Therapy (2005), it further supports keeping the arts at the center of helping practices. -- Ellen G. Levine, MSW, Ph.D, EGS Core Faculty MemberIn the translation of Solution Art, the spirit of the authors reaches back through time offering an invitation, an open door beckoning us beyond conditioned existence. To change the world, we must change our minds, our approach. We must de-center from who we think we are and remember who we really are and the resources that lie within. If we accept their invitation, we cross a threshold into the wilderness-unmapped, untamed, unknown. To live as awake and sensitive beings in these problem-saturated times, we must improvise, welcome back the marginalized aspects of ourselves-the vastness of the human imagination, our embodied curiosity and our capacity to make, to play, to love, to listen. And, what of unseen forces, the grace of surprise, the sudden shift of perception that redirects a life? As a therapist, educator, and poet I am grateful to stand on the shoulders of these elders whose spirited invitations have shaped my work and my Self. May we all be incorporated into the 'solution' the authors offer, one that is alchemical and transformational, decentralized and grounded in the very qualities that make us human. -- Melia Snyder, Ph.D., LPC, REAT, Education Director & Clinical Therapist at Open SkyThis book is a gift. First published in 2010 in German, this literal translation now offers readers of English the unique opportunity to glimpse a 30-year discursive journey about art, psychology, and change between two pioneers whose thinking is foundational to the development of expressive arts work in the world. With references to theoretical and philosophical underpinnings and numerous examples of application, the authors elaborate the emerging theories and practice from which developed the unique methodological practice of Intermodal Decentering for creating processes of change in therapy, coaching, supervision, and group work in a variety of settings. -- Sally Atkins, Ed.D., REAT, REACE, Licensed Psychologist Professor Emerita, Appalachian State University Core Faculty, The European Graduate SchoolThis textbook contains both the theoretical roots of the concept and many examples of advice in which we can look over the shoulders of the actors. They touch you with serious lightness. -- E. Kandziora, reviewing Lösungskunst in 2010, review extract translated by Margo Fuchs Knill

Book SynopsisWhat happens when the physical body and the subjective sense of self part company? How do we explain phantom limbs and alien abduction? What are the cognitive, neurobiological mechanisms that support such phenomena? In this special issue of Cognitive Neuropsychiatry, Spence and Halligan explore all these issues and more, with contributions drawn from an internationally renowned panel of authors, most of whom contributed to a symposium held in Sheffield, England in June 2001 ('The Neuropsychiatry of the Body in Space'). That meeting was primarily concerned with those bizarre and disturbing syndromes that arise when 'body' and 'self', soma and psyche are dissociated from each other, within or beyond the body's surface. Some disorders constrain the space of the body (as in neglect and dissociation syndromes), others seem to extend the boundaries (as with phantom limbs and autoscopy). Still others suggest a permeability of those boundaries (as in alien control and thought insertion, each occurring in schizophrenia). Finally, the body may itself be perceived as having passed into space, the most extreme exemplar being 'alien abduction'. Each paper contains a description of disturbed phenomenology and an account and critique of current cognitive neuropsychiatric findings.Table of ContentsS. Spence, P.W.
