  • Oxford University Press Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure COPE

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisConcurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) is a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy program designed for patients who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a co-occurring alcohol or drug use disorder. COPE represents an integration of two evidence-based treatments: Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD and Relapse Prevention for substance use disorders. COPE is an integrated treatment, meaning that both the PTSD and substance use disorder are addressed concurrently in therapy by the same clinician, and patients can experience substantial reductions in both PTSD symptoms and substance use severity. Patients use the COPE Patient Workbook while their clinician uses the Therapist Guide to deliver treatment. The program is comprised of 12 individual, 60 to 90 minute therapy sessions. The program includes several components: information about how PTSD symptoms and substance use interact with one another; information about the most common reactions to trauma; techniques to help the patient manage cravings and thoughts about using alcohol or drugs; coping skills to help the patient prevent relapse to substances; a breathing retraining relaxation exercise; and in vivo (real life) and imaginal exposures to target the patient''s PTSD symptoms.Trade ReviewCo-morbidity of PTSD and substance use disorders is as challenging as it is common in clinical practice. COPE offers the first integrated approach to treatment of these patients that has a solid foundation in evidence-based techniques and applies insights from basic neuroscience. Our experience with COPE for PTSD patients with alcohol addiction has been truly amazing. * Markus Heilig, MD PhD, Chief, Lab of Clinical and Translational Studies, NIAAA *COPE is a much-needed integrated treatment for substance use and posttraumatic stress disorders. This excellent therapist manual, and its accompanying patient workbook, will provide important guidance for clinicians in delivering COPE, thereby expanding the possibility of providing high-quality integrated care for individuals suffering from both of these illnesses. * Shelly F. Greenfield, MD, MPH, Chief Academic Officer, Chief, Division of Women's Mental Health, and Director of Clinical and Health Services Research and Education, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, McLean Hospital, and Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School *COPE is a long awaited and much needed treatment manual, developed by an outstanding group of clinicians and researchers. COPE will allow exposure therapy, a highly effective treatment for PTSD, to be more readily available to patients who also have a substance use disorder. • Oxford University Press How and Why Thoughts Change

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCognitive therapy, a core approach within a collection of psychotherapeutic techniques known as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is fundamentally about changing peoples'' thoughts-helping them overcome difficulties by recognizing and changing dysfunctional thinking styles. Among other strategies, it requires encouraging the development of skills for rehearsing new habits of thought, modifying biases in judging and interpreting social and emotional information, and for testing assumptions underlying dysfunctional and negative, distorted thinking. In How and Why Thoughts Change, Dr. Ian Evans deconstructs the nature of cognitive therapy by examining the cognitive element of CBT, that is, how and why thoughts change behavior and emotion. There are a number of different approaches to cognitive therapy, including the classic Beck approach, the late Albert Ellis''s rational-emotive psychotherapy, Young''s schema-focused therapy, and newer varieties such as mindfulness training, AcceptanceTrade ReviewA very good read for any current or aspiring cognitive and behavioural therapist. * Carla Lane, The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy *Every now and then, and this book is a prime representative, almost every page has indicators of importance and, in some cases, whole pages and series of pages. . . It is very thought-provoking, clear, thorough, and well done. * Howard A. Paul, PhD, ABPP; Child & Family Behavior Therapy, 38:1, April 2016 *The book is refreshingly non-partisan and does not attempt to convince the reader of the superiority of any particular approach to cognitive psychotherapy. Instead it discusses essential concepts, reviews the most important research in a clear and succinct way, and helps readers draw their own conclusions about the value of any particular approach. Rather than concentrating on unhelpful 'problematic' thinking, this book focuses on thinking that is constructive * that does us good, solves problems, improves relationships, and leads to better mental health including positive feelings and positive behavior change. The author's highly personable, non-technical, clear, and occasionally humorous writing style makes the content not only accessible to academics but to anyone interested in modern psychotherapy.Georg H. Eifert, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Crean College of Health & Behavioral Sciences, Chapman University *Further advancing How and Why People Change (Evans, 2013), Evans presents the 'broadest possible interpretation of what cognitive therapy is all about' in this remarkable synthesis of diverse cognitive therapies with plenty of clinical case examples. Written in a beautiful style, How and Why Thoughts Change is a must-read for graduate students and professional clinical psychologists to appreciate general principles and methods of positive cognitive change in psychotherapies. * Junko Tanaka-Matsumi, Ph.D., Dean, School of Humanities, and Professor of Psychology, Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan, and Professor Emeritus, Hofstra University *Evidence-based accounts of cognitive change in psychological therapies are still in the process of being refined. In this latest contribution, Dr. Ian Evans provides an important and timely conceptual synthesis of change mechanisms and how interventions directly and indirectly target a client's negatively biased thought content and process. The result is an elegant account of cognitive and cognitive-behavior therapies that will be useful for individualized case formulation and treatment planning, and the provision of clear rationales for interventions during consultation sessions. * Nikolaos Kazantzis, PhD, Associate Professor and Director the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Research Unit, Monash University, and author of The Therapeutic Relationship in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Cognitive and Behavior Theories in Clinical Practice *Engaging, humorous, enlightening, and well-paced I would suggest that any practitioner who is interested in what a client thinks about their situation will benefit from reading ^iHow and Why Thoughts Change^r. I would also recommend it to clinical and counselling psychology students, as a foundational text which should be read before they dive into hardcore cognitive therapy. * Psychology Aotearoa *Table of ContentsContents ; Preface ; Chapter 1: Introduction: Cogito Ergo Sum ; Chapter 2: Changing Thoughts in Practice: The Basic Concepts of Cognitive Therapies ; Chapter 3: Thinking About Thoughts ; Chapter 4: The "Stream" of Consciousness: Mind-wandering, Introspection, Rumination, ; Meditation, and Mindfulness ; Chapter 5: Distorted Thoughts ; Chapter 6: How Thoughts Influence Mood and Feelings-Or Is It the Other Way Around? ; Chapter 7: How Thoughts Lead to Action-and Why They Sometimes Do Not ; Chapter 8: General Principles of How and Why Thoughts Change ; Chapter 9: Can Cognitive Treatments Be Enhanced? ; References ; About the Author

  • Oxford University Press Casebook of Interpersonal Psychotherapy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisInterpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), an empirically validated treatment for depression and other disorders, is becoming more frequently used to treat a range of psychiatric diagnoses. Based on evidence that interpersonal problems contribute to the onset of psychiatric disorders, IPT helps patients to change interpersonal behavior in order to improve psychosocial functioning and relieve symptoms. IPT both relieves psychiatric symptoms and helps to build social skills.Bringing together experts who have treated patients with and conducted clinical research on IPT, the Casebook of Interpersonal Psychotherapy responds to the growing need for a foundational text to supplement the available manuals on IPT. The Casebook provides a wealth of real life treatment material, and illustrates the use of IPT in the hands of expert psychotherapists treating patients with a range of conditions and complications in different IPT treatment formats. The detailed cases give a sense of how IPT proceeds and how it works. Chapter authors describe specific adaptations of IPT for patients with particular disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders. The book also covers different contexts in which IPT may be practiced, including group therapy, inpatient settings, and telephone therapy. The Casebook of Interpersonal Psychotherapy is an invaluable resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and other mental health professionals interested in psychotherapy.Trade ReviewMarkowitz and Weissman succeed brilliantly at interweaving science, medicine, psychology, and culture, and I highly recommend it to clinicians interested in expanding their repertoire and to psychologists interested in contemporary clinical practice. What makes this casebook so compelling is that the editors have succeeded at making IPT accessible to the uninitiated while still providing ample references to the research behind the techniques. * PsycCritiques *Each author provides a thorough review of the literature on treatment effectiveness for the particular situation being explored. This aspect of the book is a powerful reminder of how much the field of psychotherapy research has developed since the advent ofIPT... The editors provide a clear framework for understanding the principles of IPT... This book is an important addition to the literature on brief psychotherapy. It will be useful to both the novice and the experienced psychotherapist. * David I. Joseph for the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, July 2013 *Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction ; John C. Book SynopsisThe importance of spiritual well-being and the role of meaning in moderating depression, hopelessness and desire for death in terminally-ill cancer and AIDS patients has been well-supported by research, and has led many palliative clinicians to look beyond the role of antidepressant treatment in this population. Clinicians are focusing on the development of non-pharmacologic interventions that can address issues such as hopelessness, loss of meaning, and spiritual well-being in patients with advanced cancer at the end of life. This effort led to an exploration and analysis of the work of Viktor Frankl and his concepts of logotherapy, or meaning-based psychotherapy. While Frankl''s logotherapy was not designed for the treatment of patients with life-threatening illnesses, his concepts of meaning and spirituality have inspired applications in psychotherapeutic work with advanced cancer patients, many of whom seek guidance and help in dealing with issues of sustaining meaning, hope, and uTrade ReviewThis is a priceless resource for those working with patients with advanced cancer and other terminal illnesses. Unlike so much literature on existential psychotherapy with its grand theories, this book shows how to work with dying patients step by step. Readers will be rewarded with a new-found confidence when working with dying patients... 5 stars! * Doody's Notes *Few would argue with the importance of helping patients sustain a sense of meaning, particularly in the last months of life as they confront death... Change can be thought of as planful when it is motivated by the desire to be and feel different, such as the change that comes about as a result of deliberate intervention, usually initiated by a troubled individual and aided by another, typically a professional. In How and Why People Change Dr. Ian M. Evans revisits many of the fundamental principles of behavior change in order to deconstruct what it is we try to achieve in psychological therapies. All of the conditions that impact people when seeking therapy are brought together in one cohesive framework: assumptions of learning, motivation, approach and avoidance, barriers to change, personality dynamics, and the way that individual behavioral repertoires are inter-related. Special emphasis is placed on environmental, social, and cultural influencTrade ReviewOverall, this book is comprehensive, thought provoking, reflective and highly engaging. Book SynopsisNarrative psychiatry empowers patients to shape their lives through story. Rather than focusing only on finding the source of the problem, in this collaborative clinical approach psychiatrists also help patients diagnose and develop their sources of strength. By encouraging the patient to explore their personal narrative through questioning and story-telling, the clinician helps the patient participate in and discover the ways in which they construct meaning, how they view themselves, what their values are, and who it is exactly that they want to be. These revelations in turn inform clinical decision-making about what it is that ails them, how they''d like to treat it, and what recovery might look like. The Art of Narrative Psychiatry is the first comprehensive description of narrative psychiatry in action. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough more people than ever are in psychotherapy, confusion about what it is, who needs it, and who doesn''t still exists. Drawing on over thirty years of experience as a psychotherapist, analyst, and teacher, Dr. Gaylin addresses the fundamentals of the therapeutic process: How does therapy work? Can talking truly precipitate a change in behavior? Why do therapists rely so heavily on childhood experiences? Does the past really affect the present? Gaylin speaks plainly but profoundly about the art of therapy, what the roles of the patient and therapist should be, and what it takes, on the part of each, for a patient to get better. The result is an enlightening tour through one of the most misunderstood sciences of our time. As insurance companies limit the number of therapy sessions they will cover and people look for quick-fix cures for their psychological ailments, Dr. Gaylin explains the importance of long-term therapy. This book has a natural audience of people in therapy. Cu
