Rowman & Littlefield Failure to Launch
Book SynopsisFailure to Launch is a book geared towards helping clinicians work with dependent adult children. The book first attempts to define the problem of failure to launch as well as identify the underlying causes such as entitlement, narcissism, enabling family systems, and undiagnosed mental health problems. Failure to Launch also lays out a step-by-step treatment plan to help guide clinicians with these clients to help facilitate change. The book includes case studies, sample chapters, and the latest research to help illustrate the theoretical basis for the treatments in this book.Trade Review“Michael DeVine has done it! The challenges of a science/practitioner model have been one of the most hotly debated topics in psychology for decades—i.e. the rigors of academic science vs. the practice of psychology. Yet, in Failure to Launch, DeVine takes us on a journey to understand narcissism today by incorporating both the science and practice of psychology. Through DeVine’s honest and lucid writing style, he integrates counseling theory, family systems theory, psychiatry, and cutting edge neurological research. With ease, he guides us to an understanding of how his generation bridges the ‘Baby Boomers’ and the ‘Millenials.’ He writes with passion and verve. The case examples are wonderfully clear examples of real life happening all around us. This is a book for everyday people and those of us honored and privileged enough to work with narcissism as it is seen today through the eyes of a brilliant young mind—a mind willing to mirror the truth back to us, even when we prefer not to see it. This book is a must read for any professional with ‘stuck’ individuals, as well as their families who often unwittingly contribute to the ‘failure to launch.’” -- Larry Bugen, PhD, private practice, author of "Stuck on Me, Missing You: Getting Past Self-Absorption to Find Love"“The topic of dependent adult children is one that needs to be addressed. Clinicians who work with the young adult population have long been forecasting this generational issue of a 'failure to launch.' Thus, it is no surprise that Michael's work is filling a need for clinicians at just the right time. Michael has done his research. While this book looks at the sociological dynamics of the trend of overly dependent adult children, Michael also provides concrete, practical ways in which clinicians can address this problem. For this reason and many more, I strongly recommend Michael Devine's Failure to Launch.” -- Roger L. PCCS Books Carl Rogers' Person-centered Approach: Toward an Understanding of Its Implications
Book SynopsisJohn K. Wood was one of the leading theoreticians and practitioners of the person-centered approach, its psychology and therapy. This welcome and well-presented book brings his work to a wider audience. His writings - on the person-centered approach as an approach, and on principles, groups and culture - reveal not only a widely-read and rigorous intellectual who is fearless in bringing his critical reflection to bear on his subjects, but also a passionate man deeply committed to radical practice and social change.Trade ReviewJohn K. Wood was one of the leading theoreticians and practitioners of the person-centred approach, its psychology and therapy. This welcome and well-presented book brings his work to a wider audience. His writings - on the person-centred approach as an approach, and on principles, groups and culture - reveal not only a widely-read and rigorous intellectual who is fearless in bringing his critical reflection to bear on his subjects, but also a passionate man deeply committed to radical practice and social change.Keith Tudor, Person-Centred Practitioner, Director of Temenos, Sheffield, UKIn this book, which is in many ways his legacy to his colleagues throughout the world, John is bold enough to express thoughts and feelings which are the outcome of a life lived in depth and of a fidelity to an approach which he believed could be transformative and whose potential had only been partly glimpsed. The emphasis throughout is indeed on an approach as John is quick to castigate those who, in his opinion, have become needlessly caught up in attempts to differentiate the person-centred approach from client-centred therapy or to categorise it as a psychology, a philosophy, a school or movement. The final chapter concludes with a breathtakingly simple summary of the quintessence of this approach which Carl Rogers spent a lifetime embodying and implementing. A"The most important thing Rogers had to sayA", John writes, A"was simply A"yesA" to personal improvement, to real learning, to constructive behaviour, to nourishing relationships, to honest thinking, to lifeA".Professor Brian Thorne, Norwich Centre, Norwich, UKTable of Contents1. PCCS Books Emerging Developments in Pre-therapy: A Pre-Therapy Reader
Book SynopsisGarry Prouty writes: In developing this book with my colleagues, I have come to realize that Pre-Therapy is not only a theory and technique of psychotherapy, but also a method of understanding psychological phenomena. Western humanistic psychology has traditionally focused on higher levels of human functioning such as peak experiences or self actualization. In contrast, Pre-Therapy focuses on lower levels of functioning - learning disability, regression, chronic schizophrenia and dementia. Pre-Therapy is a commitment to understand and treat the regressed levels of 'Being in the World'. It is possibly a paradigm shift within western humanistic psychology. In a different sense, Pre-Therapy is a cultural conserve. It maintains a consistent 'non-directive' position derived from mid-20th Century Rogerian Psychology. It also embraces a 'concrete phenomenology'. In Martin Buber's language this is described as 'pointing at the concrete'. Pre-Therapy enables the therapist to contact the patient's regressed levels through the concreteness of the Contact Reflections. What is important about this text, is not Pre-Therapy itself. This can be read in other books and papers. What is important in this text is the growth resulting from Pre-Therapy. Roughly speaking Pre-Therapy has undergone three changes: 1966-1986 'birth' in the United States; 1986-2006 Expansion and growth in Europe; and, The expansion beyond itself to other distinct and separate psychological phenomena - a second generation of theorizing and applications. For the reader not familiar with Pre-Therapy, Part I outlines a brief history of the approach and Part II is a review of the theory itself. Part III contains independent approaches to divergent issues and problems. They have their commonality only by being rooted in Pre-Therapy. They are emergent developments.Table of ContentsPrefacePart I: A brief history of Pre-TherapyPart II: A review of Pre-TherapyPart III: Emergent DevelopmentsCh 1 Pre-Therapeutic approaches with people 'with special needs'. PCCS Books Implausible Professions: Arguments for Pluralism and Autonomy in Psychotherapy and Counselling
Book SynopsisThe first edition of Implausible Professions, published in 1997, foretold many of the core issues around therapy 'professionalisation' that have come to dominate the field in recent years as the shadow of possible state regulation has loomed ever larger over the psy landscape. In the current highly charged context, this new edition could not be better timed. The many and diverse chapters, written by a mix of well-known names and new arrivals, are as fresh and relevant today as they were in the 1990s. The back cover of the first edition described how the contributors to Implausible Professions 'throw into question many of the most taken-for-granted assumptions on which the professionalisationA" and commodification of psychotherapy and counselling are based. The essays display the creative pluralism and passionate vitality which typify the best aspects of therapeutic work.' This edition contains a completely new editorial Introduction and Conclusion, updating the story to 2011.For those engaging with the politics of professionalisation for the first time, or wanting to refresh themselves about the reasons why counselling and psychotherapy are in principle 'implausible professions', this text is even more indispensable than it was in 1997.Trade ReviewThe price of the book is worth it for the wisdom of the introduction let alone the other thoughtful pieces in where and how we - who seek to understand people - have moved forward. Read it. Susie Orbach, author of 'Fat Is A Feminist Issue' (1982) and 'Bodies: Big Ideas' (2009) An excellent book that shows the astonishing diversity of therapeutic practice and makes clear why the field cannot be regulated by the state without losing its soul. An invaluable book in today's climate of control. Paul Gordon, Chair of the Philadelphia Association and author of 'The Hope of Therapy' and 'An Uneasy Dwelling' This was, when first published, an invaluable conceptual and practical resource for working against the grain of the 'professionalisation' of our care for each other, and now, in this second edition, doubly so!
