Book SynopsisPrioritizes survivors of abuse by reexamining Christian ideals about suffering and salvation More than half of women and almost one in three of men in the United States have experienced sexual violence at some time in their lives. Yet our Christian tradition has failed survivors of sexual violence, who have been taught to believe that traumatic suffering brings us closer to God. Incarnating Grace attempts to save our broken ways of talking about God’s grace by unearthing liberating resources buried in the Christian tradition. Christian ideas about salvation have historically contributed to sexual violence in our communities by reinforcing the idea that suffering is salvific. But a God worth worshiping does not want human beings to suffer. Drawing on the sixteenth-century Spanish mystic Teresa of Avila as well as contemporary political and feminist theologians, philosophers, and legal scholars, author and Associate Professor of theology Julia Feder offers an account of Christian salvation as mystical-political. Feder begins by describing the breadth of traumatic wounding and the shape of traumatic recovery, as articulated by psychologists. Since the fullness of post-traumatic healing requires reserves deeper than those which can be articulated by the secular field of psychology alone, the book then introduces the Spanish Carmelite Saint Teresa of Avila and her theological insights, which are most helpful for constructing a post-traumatic theology of healing. Arguing that God stands against violence and suffering, the book also examines the notion of “senseless suffering,” a technical term that comes from Edward Schillebeeckx, a Catholic twentieth-century Flemish priest and theologian. The suffering of sexual violence serves no higher purpose or greater human value and pushes against all ways of making sense of the world as good and orderly. In the following chapters, Feder turns to two Christian virtues that animate post-traumatic recovery, courage and hope, and explores how Christian hope can provide a language to empower courageous activity undertaken toward healing. Incarnating Grace opens a new dialogue about salvation and violence that does not allow evil to have the last word.Table of ContentsForeword by Donna Freitas | ix Introduction: Saving Grace | 1 1 Salvation as Mystical-Political Healing | 7 2 Teresa of Avila: A Saint for Survivors | 27 3 Teresa’s Embodied Anthropology | 49 4 The Survivor as Imago Dei: Created for Friendship | 69 5 Edward Schillebeeckx’s Theology of Suffering | 90 6 The Story of Jesus and the Mystical-Political Shape of Salvation | 103 7 Courage in the Work of Posttraumatic Healing | 122 8 Recovery and Hope | 152 Conclusion: A Theology of Healing | 165 Acknowledgments | 181 Notes | 183 Index | 235

  • The Future of Training in Psychotherapy and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Future of Training in Psychotherapy and Counselling presents a revealing and stimulating account of the current state of training that demonstrates how training will have to adapt if it is to sucessfully meet the needs and challenges of the future. In an attempt to look afresh at the whole question of training, John Rowan proposes that there are three ways of doing therapy and any examination of training has to consider each of these:* the instrumental, where the main emphasis is on the treating the client or patient * the authentic way, where the main emphasis is on meeting the client or patient* the transpersonal way, where main emphasis is on linking with the client in a more personal way. Each approach makes different assumptions about the self, about the relationship, and about the level of consciousness involved in doing therapy. By challenging the basic precepts of traditional training, John Rowan encourages the reader to reconsider subjects including the difference between counselling and psychotherapy, culture and ethics, the origins of disturbance in clients, and child development. The Future of Training in Psychotherapy and Counselling provides a much needed new perspective that will compel all psychotherapists and counsellors to take a closer look at training in the field.Trade Review'A book principally aimed at psychotherapists to encourage them to think about the nature of training and therefore practice... a complex but highly informed discussion that will enhance the understanding of practitioners in the field.' - The Scientific Medical Network Review'to my mind all counselling and psychotherapy trainers and tutors should be reading this if they have any intention to remain updated and to make necessary changes to courses'. - Colin Feltham, British Journal of Guidance and Counselling'With its presentation of new perspectives and detailed exploration of issues key to the future of psychotherapy and counselling, this book will be of interest and value to both trainers and trainees' - Vikki Kelly, The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy (Vol. 7, No. 4)'A book principally aimed at psychotherapists to encourage them to think about the nature of training and therefore practice... a complex but highly informed discussion that will enhance the understanding of practitioners in the field.'- The Scientific Medical Network ReviewTable of ContentsPreface Introduction 1. • The Connections Paradigm: Ancient Jewish Wisdom

Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. The Connections Paradigm: Ancient Jewish Wisdom

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book introduces an approach to mental health that dates back 3,000 years to an ancient body of Jewish spiritual wisdom. Known as the Connections Paradigm, the millennia-old method has been empirically shown to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. After being passed down from generation to generation and tested in clinical settings with private clients, it is presented to a broad audience for the first time. The idea behind the paradigm is that at any given moment, human beings are either “connected” or “disconnected” across three key relationships. To be “connected” means to be in a loving, harmonious, and fulfilling relationship; to be “disconnected” means, of course, the opposite. The three relationships are those between our souls and our bodies, ourselves and others, and ourselves and God. These relationships are hierarchal; each depends on the one that precedes it. This means that we can only connect with God to the extent that we associate with others, and we cannot connect with others if we don’t connect with ourselves. The author, Dr. David H. Rosmarin, devotes a section to each relationship and describes techniques and practices to become a more connected individual. He also brings in compelling stories from his clinical practice to show the process in action. Whether you’re a clinician working with clients, or a person seeking the healing balm of wisdom; whether you’re a member of the Jewish faith, or a person open to new spiritual perspectives, you will find this book sensible, practical, and timely because, for all of us, connection leads to mental health.Trade Review “A leading voice in the psychology of religion and its application to mental health problems, Dr. Rosmarin has given faith-based providers an entirely new language for intertwining spiritual, interpersonal, and mental health domains in the interests of clinical care. This innovative volume shows how ancient Jewish teachings on the relation of body and soul can be combined with a broad array of modern evidence-based approaches to psychological care, from exposure to experiential acceptance, from nutrition to interpersonal compassion. There is a significant body of science showing that embedding evidence-based intervention into a spiritual journey is a powerful combination for people of faith. Still, providers need a more general approach that stands one step above the details of particular religious commitments. Filled with clinical examples, this book radiates kindness and empathic concern, and its use of ‘body and soul’ could be effective with a wide range of people of faith.” —Steven C. Hayes, PhD, Originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, author of A Liberated Mind, and Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno “Dr. Rosmarin has done a great mental health service for the general public. With so many today beset by anxiety and depression and tiring of modern answers that feel superficial, The Connections Paradigm offers a profound, centuries-old method to relieve mental distress, enhance life’s most important relationships, and achieve genuine peace of mind.” —Harold G. Koenig, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Duke University Health Systems, and director of the Duke Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health “The Connections Paradigm is not only timely but Dr. David Rosmarin’s careful attention to its rich traditionands practical relevance for each of us is a gift. I am truly grateful for how well he unpacks these three critical forms of connection—Inner Connection, Interpersonal Connection, and Spiritual Connection—with such clarity alongside the relatable stories he weaves throughout this book!” —Holly K. Oxhandler, PhD, LMSW, associate professor of social work and associate dean for research faculty development, Baylor University’s Diana R. Garland School of Social Work “Infused with the warmth and wisdom of Judaism, this book offers a deeply thoughtful psychological and spiritual guide for those seeking greater connectedness within themselves, with others, and with God. Using poignant stories from his clinical practice, Rosmarin illustrates how a ‘connections paradigm’ can foster transformations among people facing the full range of psychological problems. This book will deepen the practice of many providers and the lives of many clients.” —Kenneth I. Pargament, PhD, professor emeritus, department of psychology, Bowling Green State University, author of Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy “David Rosmarin has compiled a thoughtful and relatable guide to help us reconnect with our body and soul. He shares practical instructions supported by theory, case studies,s, and ancient Jewish spiritual teachings to show that we can live more fully when we are truly connected to all our parts. The Connections Paradigm is good for the body, mind, and soul.” —Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Real Change “Jung famously claimed that every patient he treated over age thirty-five needed in the end to find a spiritual outlook on life. In The Connections Paradigm, mental and spiritual health are beautifully intertwined, and Jewish wisdom becomes a stabilizing and uplifting force in an often dark and confusing world.” —Rabbi David Wolpe, Max Webb Senior Rabbi, Sinai Temple “Written in a lucid and graceful style and full of applicable case studies, this book is an authoritative statement on the importance of spirituality in mental health. I highly recommend The Connection Paradigm either as a self-help guide or as a blueprint for interventions by mental health professionals. The cure for human suffering lies in healing the brokenness in a divided self, conflict in relationships, and separation from God.” —Paul T. P. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisSpirituality is an important part of many clients’ lives. It can be a resource for stabilization, healing, and growth. It can also be the cause of struggle and even harm. More and more therapists—those who consider themselves spiritual and those who do not—recognize the value of addressing spirituality in therapy and increasing their skill for engaging it ethically and effectively. In this immensely practical book, Russell Siler Jones helps therapists feel more competent and confident about having spiritual conversations with clients. With a refreshing, down-to-earth style, he describes how to recognize the diverse explicit and implicit ways spirituality can appear in psychotherapy, how to assess the impact spirituality is having on clients, how to make interventions to maximize its healthy impact and lessen its unhealthy impact, and how therapists can draw upon their own spirituality in ethical and skillful ways. He includes extended case studies and clinical dialogue so readers can hear how spirituality becomes part of case conceptualization and what spiritual conversation actually sounds like in psychotherapy. Jones has been a therapist for nearly 30 years and has trained therapists in the use of spirituality for over a decade. He writes about a complex topic with an elegant simplicity and provides how-to advice in a way that encourages therapists to find their own way to apply it.Spirit in Session is a pragmatic guide that therapists will turn to again and again as they engage their clients in one of the most meaningful and consequential dimensions of human experience. Prometheus Books Freedom at Last: Healing the Shame of Childhood

Book SynopsisChildhood sexual abuse (or child sexual abuse/CSA) is not only an assault on the body—it is an assault on the mind and on the spirit. It is an insult to the victim’s integrity, her self-esteem, his very being. Besides imposing a significantly higher risk of conditions like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, suicidality, substance abuse, and learning & educational difficulties, the most devastating consequence of childhood sexual abuse is shame. Freedom at Last will help victims of this form of abuse recover from all aspects of this extreme shame and its damaging after-effects.Not only does shame from CSA cause a multitude of problems, but this very same shame stands in the way of a victim’s ability to recover and heal. Victims often struggle with shame’s correlation with dissociation, difficulty forming relationships, emotional barriers to disclosing abuse and seeking help, and a lasting negative effect on victim’s sense of self. In this groundbreaking book, leading psychologist Dr. Beverly Engel reveals the truth about how CSA affects victims, dispels common myths surrounding this type of abuse, explains the nuances behind the emotion of shame, and teaches readers how to develop more self-awareness about how shame has manifested in their lives along with powerful and effective shame-reduction strategies. Freedom at Last offers effective strategies for not only healing the negative effects of abuse-related shame, but also to help overcome the shame that keeps survivors from seeking help. Using the most recent research along with her 35-year career working with victims of child sexual abuse, Dr. Engel provides a blueprint for readers and their loved ones to overcome the debilitating effects of shame, including strategies for emotional release, encouragement to free themselves from their secrets, teaching self-forgiveness, eliminating shame-causing behaviors, and removing shame from unhealthy behaviors and attitudes.

Book SynopsisIn The Heart of ACT, renowned acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) trainer Robyn Walser explores ACT as a process-based therapy incorporating interpersonal, intrapersonal, and overarching and ongoing processes, as well as the integration of six core components of psychological flexibility to connect clinicians to the dynamic and relational implementation of ACT.Engaging clinical scenarios, therapeutic insights, and supervision dialogues are offered to help clinicians move beyond their conceptual understanding of ACT principles to master the nuances of the therapeutic relationship at the heart of ACT. Using the tips and strategies in this professional guide, you'll develop a flexible, grounded, and client-centered practice. With this comprehensive resource, you'll learn to cultivate an organic, process-driven practice, grounded in the heart of the therapeutic relationship and responsive to clients in the moment. The Heart of ACT is designed to mimic the supervision experience by presenting material in thought-provoking chapters grounded in real-life clinical situations and challenges. In the book, you'll also find supervision dialogues inspired by Walser's work with her supervisees, Carlton Coulter and Manuela O'Connell. Carlton and Manuela comment and ask questions related to the material in the book and their own ACT learning process. These are then addressed by Walser in a dialogue designed to assist clinicians in connecting to the material. These sections mimic the helpful mentoring process of one-on-one training and supervision, and offer insights into specific therapeutic challenges that can unfold in structured conversation. As the applications of ACT grow, so does the need for up-to-date professional resources. Unlike many advanced ACT books that focus on procedures and techniques, The Heart of ACT focuses on the heart of the therapeutic relationship, as well as the "soft skills" that are difficult to describe, but which often mark the difference between a merely good clinician and an excellent one. If you're looking to take your ACT delivery to a new, exciting level, this book is a must-have addition to your professional library.

  • Social Exclusion, Compound Trauma and Recovery:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Social Exclusion, Compound Trauma and Recovery:

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisResponding to the growing number of psychologically-informed services for people experiencing social exclusion and, in particular, homelessness, this book gives professionals the information and understanding they need to be fully informed in their practice with this client group. It begins with theory, looking at the psychology of social exclusion and the processes that underlie it, and considers the relationship between trauma, complex needs, homelessness and social exclusion. Presenting practical interventions and case studies, the authors then reveal what makes an effective service in practice and a client perspective on social exclusion and recovery is provided. This is essential reading for all those involved in developing services that meet the needs of socially excluded people with histories of complex trauma or presentations of complex needs, including those who are homeless, refugees and asylum seekers, Traveller and Roma communities and people involved with the criminal justice system.Trade ReviewBased on his many years' work with some of society's most excluded and alienated people, Cockersell has coined the term 'compound trauma' and produced a vivid account of how life goes wrong, and what we can do about it. By drawing on modern psychoanalytic thinking, developmental neurobiology and current ideas of therapeutic environments, he presents the most complex problems in an accessible and engaging way. -- Rex Haigh, Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Therapeutic Environments and Relational Health, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, Nottingham UniversityPeter Cockersell sets out a compelling and plausible narrative for how homelessness can follow successive experiences of trauma and abandonment rather than just being the result of "bad choices". His psychodynamic model of understanding social exclusion gives us a better way of understanding why some homeless people seem to reject help - and some real clues as to how we can change our practice to work more effectively for such people. -- Dr Philip Timms FRCPsych, Honorary Senior Lecturer, King’s College LondonBecoming homeless is a traumatic experience, but very, very often it is just one more such experience in a life characterised by exclusion, neglect and abuse. A powerful and hopeful call for us to recognise how our common humanity makes us all 'interdependent', this new book will help colleagues right across the homeless sector (and beyond) reflect on the central importance of building and modelling good quality relationships. As they explore the many paradoxes that inhabit the world of homelessness - clients who reject care may need the most care, caring for others can help us care for ourselves - Peter Cockersell and colleagues challenge us to recognise multi-morbidity as a condition in its own right, and one that demands a long-term, psychologically informed, compassionate response. If you work in the homelessness sector you need to read this book. -- Alex Bax, Chief Executive, PathwayTable of ContentsPart 1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Bereaved Parents and their Continuing Bonds: Love

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisFor bereaved parents the development of a continuing bond with the child who has died is a key element in their grieving and in how they manage the future. Using her experience of working in a children's hospital as a counsellor with bereaved parents, Catherine Seigal looks at how continuing bonds are formed, what facilitates and sustains them and what can undermine them. She reflects on what she learned about the counsellor's role supporting parents in extremely distressing situations.Using the words and experiences of bereaved parents, and drawing on current theories of continuing bonds, the book is relevant to both professionals and parents. It covers important subjects such as the benefits of a therapeutic group for bereaved parents, the challenges for parents when another child is born, the important role of siblings in keeping the bonds alive and how it is for parents whose child dies before birth or in early infancy. The book uses theory lightly but relevantly and places it into the heart of the lived experience. It offers anyone working with bereaved parents insight into the many and varied ways grief is experienced and expressed and what can be helpful and unhelpful. And it offers bereaved parents the opportunity to share other parents' experiences, to understand a little more about their own feelings and to know they are not alone, providing an original and valuable guide to continuing love after death.Trade ReviewIn this profound and beautifully written book Cathie Seigal opens our minds and hearts to a world of loss, grief and transformation that is far outside the experience of most people. She weaves together the stories of bereaved parents with her own capacity for deep reflection and understanding, and disturbs our settled notions of what grieving might be. The work she describes is not easy, and reading this book was a painful experience for me at times, but it is an indispensable resource for anyone concerned with accompanying other human beings in extreme pain. Truthful, grounded, intense, emotionally accurate, and ultimately spiritual in its sensibilities, I cannot recommend it too highly. -- Andrew Cooper, Professor of Social Work at Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation TrustThis book can be read by anyone, but will be an incredibly valuable resource for parents, professionals and those supporting the bereaved. It manages to convey the complex array of human responses to the death of a child with clarity and compassion. Her central thesis of the importance of creating a lasting relationship between the child who has died and those left behind is powerfully and beautifully rendered. -- Timothy Watts, Consultant Neonatologist at St Thomas' Hospital, LondonA humble, thoughtful and reflective book that demonstrates the author's ability to care for and emotionally hold her clients by bearing witness to their pain and walking alongside them as they recreate their relationships with their child after death. -- British Journal of Social WorkI would certainly recommend that this book be placed on the reading list for bereavement counselling courses. And I for one will be recommending it to parents struggling with a profundity beyond words, because this book speaks to that profundity. * Cruse Bereavement Care *In this remarkable book Catherine Seigal has distilled her work with bereaved parents and created a profound gift for anyone who has lost a child...Catherine goes right to the heart of the matter, writing about the love that is greater than death, and how it is in this love we find the continued bond with our dead children. Yet this book is not only for parents, it is also a resource for counsellors. This book is a definitive guide to understanding talking therapies. It will clarify questions, misunderstandings, myths and grey areas in therapy, compassionately guiding the reader through their journey from beginning to consider therapy, to finding the right therapist, preparing for the first session, surviving common challenges, knowing when to end therapy, and when to return. Karin Blak reveals the rarely considered facts of how therapists work, how they themselves are supervised, how to know if your therapist is overstepping boundaries, the role of a supporting partner, family member or friend, what the jargon really means, how to manage expectations, and when to move on from therapy. Each section contains honest commentary about the process of therapy, case studies showing examples applicable to real life, encouragements to act, practical suggestions and actions to apply if needed.Trade Review'A beautifully written demystification of the therapeutic journey, with intimate sharing from Karin’s life – an invaluable book.' - Malcolm Stern, psychotherapist and author of Slay Your Dragons With Compassion"A clear, humane and honest guide full of insider tips to support anyone in therapy." Book SynopsisWINNER - NAUTILUS GOLD BOOK AWARDExploring how the essentialism of the gender binary impacts on clients of all genders, this ground-breaking book examines how historical, social and culturally gendered trauma emerges in clinical settings. Weaving together systemic ideas, autoethnography, narrative therapy and somatic experiencing, the book charts the history of the gender binary and its roots in colonialism, as well as the way this culture is perpetuated intergenerationally, and the impact this trauma has on all bodies, gender identities and experiences.Featuring clinical vignettes, exercises and reflexive practices, this is an accessible and intersectional guide for professionals to develop their understanding of gender-derived trauma for supporting clients. Highlighting the importance of applying a trauma-informed approach in practice, this book provides insights as to how we can work towards collective healing, for future generations and for ourselves.Trade ReviewAs a thought provoking critical text, Gender Trauma speaks to the need to see gender as a category complicit with, and indeed formed by, practices of colonisation. Iantaffi calls our attention to the multiple, intersecting ways in which gender shapes relationships, institutions, and individual practices. In so doing, Iantaffi creates a space for new ways of thinking about and relating to gender as a category. -- Professor Damien W. Riggs, Flinders University, AustraliaDr Alex Iantaffi is one of the smartest gender theorists I know. A compassionate clinician and a brilliant educator they have produced one of the most compelling books on gender diversity and human rights you will ever read. JKP has published a plethora of books on gender diversity in recent years. Dr Iantaffi's book on Gender Trauma deserves to be amongst the best of them. -- Dominic Davies, Founder & CEO, Pink TherapyDr. Iantaffi's book is a homage to our diversely gendered and courageously queer ancestors, a guidebook for those here on Earth working to recover and create healthy culture, and an act of service for those who have yet to return to a world that will be just a bit more inclusive and kind. -- Dr. Daniel Foor, author of Ancestral Medicine: Rituals for Personal and Family Healing

Book SynopsisThis handbook provides mental health professionals with a thorough understanding of the biopsychosocial nature of disordered gambling and shares current evidence-based theories, interventions and strategies to use in clinical practice. It provides guidance for working with individuals of any age and covers different gambling modes, activities and subtypes, including new forms of gambling through online and virtual platforms. Drawing on the authors' substantial experience working with and researching gambling addiction, it considers how treatment can be specialized for particular client groups, including trauma survivors, military, older adults, adolescents and diverse communities. It provides detailed diagnostic and screening resources and includes important information on the financial and legal aspects. This is essential reading for any therapist treating clients with gambling disorder.Trade ReviewNot all addictions are the same, so treating them should address the unique features of the addiction, in this case gambling disorder. Bechtold and Wilson highlight aspects of gambling disorder that differ from other addictions and provide concrete ideas for therapists and other professional helpers to improve their practice, whether they treat the gambling or refer someone for treatment. The rich details are rooted in up-to-date evidence, and case examples illustrate how to tailor and use core therapeutic skills in treating persons with gambling disorder and their families. They explain how boundary setting, addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, addressing finances, and interacting with and documenting for the judicial system are critical and different for people facing gambling problems. It highlights key screening and assessment tools and provides resources that can supplement therapy and increase the likelihood of recovery. This book offers insights for both new and seasoned professionals. -- Elizabeth Mulvaney, MSW, LCSW-PA, Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh School of Social WorkThe Gambling Disorder Handbook by Jody Bechtold and Alyssa Wilson is the most comprehensive, current guide for the treatment of gambling disorder I have encountered. It provides a solid, evidence-informed rationale for a broad range of treatment approaches while also addressing "real-life" clinical applications. The authors, using their significant clinical experience, also address under-researched topics that are critical to the treatment of gambling disorder such as financial management, restitution, money protection planning and coping with legal issues. This book is a must have for any clinician working with clients and their families struggling with gambling disorder. -- Lori Rugle, PhD, ICGC-II/BACCNew to treating gambling disorders? Struggling to translate theory/research? Well, Bechtold and Wilson provide an updated, clear, concise, practical, and evidence-based treatment guide. Current trends, gambling subtypes, holistic emphasis, case illustrations, and models of intervention--application connect the dots! This is a must-read treatment roadmap for every addiction professional. -- Deborah G. Haskins, Ph.D., LCPC, ACS, MAC, ICGC-II, CCGSO, BACC Owner/Chief Clinical Consultant – MOSAIC Consulting and Counseling Services President, Maryland Council on Problem GamblingA must read! "The Gambling Disorder Treatment Handbook" serves as a much needed, modern resource for those treating problem gambling. Addressing a wide range of relevant topics and offering up to date statistics, this book is a valuable asset to any treatment professional, educator or parent dealing with gambling related issues. -- Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of PennsylvaniaI appreciate the opportunity to review and recommend this informative and well laid out manuscript written by Jody Bechtold and Alyssa Wilson. I am sure the clinicians that will utilize this book will gain the knowledge necessary to provide excellent therapeutic skills to the problem/disordered gambler. I look forward to being able to share this book with our treatment providers. The case studies will help the clinician to understand the dynamics of the problem/disordered gambler. I would recommend this book to others in this field. -- Neva Pryor, MSTable of ContentsCHAPTER 1: GAMBLING IS EVERYWHERE, (and it doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon) 11Global Gambling
