Penguin Putnam Inc The Stormy Search for the Self A Guide to
Book SynopsisMany people are undergoing a profound personal transformation associated with spiritual opening. Under favorable circumstances, this process results in emotional healing, a radical shift in values, and a profound awareness of the mystical dimension of existence. For some, these changes are gradual and relatively smooth, but for others they can be so rapid and dramatic that they interfere with effective everyday functioning, creating tremendous inner turmoil. Unfortunately, many traditional health-care professionals do not recognize the positive potential of these crises; they often see them as manifestations of mental disease and repsond with stigmatizing labels, suppressive drugs, and even institutionalization. In The Stormy Search for the Self, Christina and Stanislav Grof, the world's foremost authorities on the subject of spiritual emergence, draw on years of dramatic personal and professional experience with transformative states to explore these spiritual emergencies, altered states so powerful they threaten to overwhelm the individual's oridinary reality. This book will provide insights, assurances, and practical suggestions for those who are experiencing or have experienced such a crisis, for their families and friends, and for mental-health professionals. It is also a valuable guide for anyone involved in personal transformation whose experiences, though generally untraumatic, may still at times be bewildering or disorienting.

Harvard University Press A Natural History of Human Thinking
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewMichael Tomasello is one of the few psychologists to have conducted intensive research on both human children and chimpanzees, and A Natural History of Human Thinking reflects not only the insights enabled by such cross-species comparisons but also the wisdom of a researcher who appreciates the need for asking questions whose answers generate biological insight. His book helps us to understand the differences, as well as the similarities, between human brains and other brains. -- David P. Barash * Wall Street Journal *Tomasello has spent a lifetime conducting…tests on both great apes such as chimpanzees and on humans of different ages, in order to pin down exactly where our capacities differ. In this difficult but rewarding book, he attempts to place these results into a grand theory of how and why these differences evolved… Tomasello’s account of how co-operation drove the development of our distinctive intellect is controversial… It is also highly speculative: a trait such as co-operation leaves few traces in the fossil record. But it is speculation by a thinker at the top of his field, based on the latest research, and as such is likely to be the definitive statement of human uniqueness for some time to come. -- Stephen Cave * Financial Times *Tomasello argues that human thinking is unique because it is cooperative. He posits that environmental upheavals forced early humans to channel their thinking towards collective aims through two evolutionary innovations: collaboration while foraging, and the rise of culture as population and competition burgeoned. Tomasello convincingly sets out how ‘shared intentionality,’ in which social complexity spawned conceptual complexities, sets us apart. * Nature *Compelling reading… In a reassessment of his earlier work, Tomasello argues that apes are cognitively much closer to humans than had been thought only a decade ago… The book’s great virtue is its conceptual analysis of the cumulative steps in cognition required to get us from ape to human… Highly stimulating. -- Stephen Levinson * Science *What is it that differentiates humans from other animals? It’s the question that keeps evolutionary anthropologists like Michael Tomasello up nights. But after 20-plus years wrestling with the thorny subject, he puts forward his ‘shared intentionality hypothesis,’ designed to account for how early humans learned to coordinate their actions and communicate their thoughts with collaborators. * New Scientist *Human thought, in Tomasello’s conception, is different from that of all other organisms because humans alone have the capacity to think about the thoughts of others, and do so collectively. Tomasello’s greatest strength is his insistence on relying on data to support his hypotheses, particularly the fascinating studies he summarizes comparing pre-linguistic children to our great ape relatives. * Publishers Weekly *What makes human thinking unique? Michael Tomasello’s clear and elegant new book demonstrates once more his ability to draw on his experimental work with apes and children to offer major new insights into the evolutionary origins of human cognition. -- Dan Sperber, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris

Columbia University Press The Oneness Hypothesis
Book SynopsisThe idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. This anthology explores the oneness hypothesis through East Asian and Western thought as well as sociology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive neuroscience.Trade ReviewA fascinating collection of very diverse pieces on a most important and too often neglected subject. Truly notable for the range of approaches exhibited, the different traditions or cultures treated, and the variety of questions, both theoretical and interpretative, that are examined. -- Lee H. Yearley, Walter Y. Evans-Wentz Professor of Oriental Philosophy, Religions, and Ethics, Stanford UniversityIndividualism, the assumption that humans are ontologically distinct, fully autonomous, naturally self-interested beings is a foundational philosophical idea of modern Western culture. It is also, arguably, an increasingly disastrous one for the well-being both of the individuals it celebrates and the societies to which they belong. The impressive list of distinguished contributors to this important book show in many different ways that this assumption is highly debatable and culturally contingent. It should be read by anyone interested in the roots of the grave problems currently facing the world. -- John Dupré, director of Egenis, professor of philosophy of science, University of ExeterPositing that many of the pressing problems of our age are rooted into restrictive views of the boundaries of the self, this fascinating collection of essays provides a wealth of insights about how oneness might—or might not—be relevant today. From history to religion, philosophy (East and West), and psychology, the issue is tackled from a striking variety of different angles. A stimulating and inspiring read. -- Sébastien Billioud, professor of anthropology, history, intellectual history, and religions of contemporary China, University Paris DiderotThe Oneness Hypothesis proposes a fascinating and timely exploration of the idea of oneness from different disciplinary angles, while synthesizing current knowledge and outlining a path forward. The editors of the volume are leading scholars who will have a substantial impact on future conversations and scholarship about this topic. -- Ara Norenzayan, professor of psychology and director of the Centre for Human Evolution, Cognition, and Culture, University of British ColumbiaThis innovative collection explores this theme from a variety of different angles. -- A. Prometheus Books Overcoming the Destructive Inner Voice: True
Book SynopsisMany people grapple with destructive thought processes or a "critical inner voice" that directs their behavior and, to varying degrees, limits their lives. Using deeply personal and very human stories based on his own clinical practice, noted psychologist Robert W. Firestone illustrates the struggles of his clients to give words to this "enemy within," and in the process overcome its damaging influence. These revealing and captivating stories offer glimpses into the uniquely human relationship that develops in the therapeutic encounter and demonstrate the powerful impact that the experience has on both client and therapist. Dr. Firestone is the originator of a therapeutic method called "Voice Therapy," by which clients learn to identify the language of the defense system and eventually separate their own point of view from its harmful effects. Each story provides an intimate look into one person's life, illuminates aspects of his or her "dark side," and highlights an important insight into the therapeutic process. This sensitively written book will evoke emotional responses in readers, and inspire them to take action to challenge the dictates of their own inner critic. Taken together, these stories underscore the distinctive merits and continuing relevance of the therapeutic process, especially in our distracted, technological world increasingly detached from feeling.

It integrates what is still relevant from earlier traditions (including neglected areas such as psychoanalytic perspectives), and links this to leading edge research and analysis. What is particularly refreshing is its willingness to engage with the depth and complexity of mental health difficulties - signposting a way forward that is grounded in theory and research, and taking us beyond the reactive, procedural and over-medicalised approaches that can dominate current practice. -- Jerry Tew, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, University of Birmingham, UKAn excellent book and a must for the professional who wants to further develop their knowledge and practice of psychosocial practice. It is timely as social work needs to raise its game and to establish its professional identity. Using a variety of case studies showing how a range of methods of intervention can work this makes compelling reading for those who are engaged in working with people who have mental health problems. This book will appeal to a range of mental health professional and is especially relevant for practitioners who are looking to develop advanced psychosocial practice. -- Professor Malcolm Golightley, Head of the School of Health and Social Care, University of Lincoln, UKTable of ContentsAcknowledgements. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Autism Spectrum Disorder in Mid and Later Life
Book SynopsisBringing together international academics and professionals who are actively researching and working in the field, this pioneering scholarly volume covers the issues faced by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) in mid and later life.Including a range of personal, academic and clinical perspectives, the book considers historical and contemporary perspectives on autism, including diagnosis, developmental outcomes and life course issues. Attention is given to medical, care and psychological issues that arise as people with ASD age, such as declining cognitive function and speech and communication issues. Family, community support, housing, advocacy, and socio-cultural considerations for older adults with ASD are also given careful consideration, and there are chapters on relationship and sexuality issues and on environmental design.Trade ReviewThis new textbook provides an important introduction to the broad range of issues faced by mid- and later-life adults with an autism spectrum disorder. It links the personal experiences of affected individuals and their families with the perspectives of researchers from genetics and psychology through policy. Many of the chapters acknowledge that, unfortunately, we are only at the start of research efforts to understand the challenges faced by this aging population. Nevertheless Scott Wright has produced the first comprehensive textbook on this topic and it will undoubtedly frame this critical conversation going forward. -- Joseph Piven M.D., Thomas E. Castelloe Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology, Director, Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, University of North Carolina at Chapel HillThere is a significant lack of knowledge about adults, particularly older adults, with autism. This book, on the challenges and promises of autism in later life, sets out to redress this situation, with contributions from individuals with autism, parents, clinicians and researchers from many disciplines. It focuses not just on the difficulties of growing older, but also on positive ways in which the future for older individuals with autism can be improved. It should be essential reading for anyone involved with adults with autism, and for those seeking to improve the transition from childhood to adult life. -- Patricia Howlin, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Child Psychology, King’s College, London; Professor of Developmental Disorders, University of SydneyThis is an important book on an essential topic... Scott Wright has managed to gather together a wonderful array of perspectives: cultural as well as biological; self-advocacy alongside clinical and research voices; family, community and societal viewpoints... Jessica Kingsley Publishers Islands of Genius: The Bountiful Mind of the
Book Synopsis* Gold Medal Winner in the Psychology / Mental Health Category of the 2011 IPPY Awards ** Silver Medal Winner in the 2010 BOTYA Awards Psychology Category *Savant syndrome is a rare condition in which individuals with developmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, have one or more areas of expertise, ability, or brilliance - "islands of genius" - that exist in contrast with their overall limitations. In this fascinating book, Dr. Darold Treffert looks at what we know about this remarkable condition, and at new discoveries that raise interesting questions about the hidden brain potential within us all. Dr. Treffert explores the phenomena of genetic memory - instances in which individuals somehow "know" things they never learned - and sudden genius or "acquired savantism" - where a neuro-typical person unexpectedly and spectacularly develops savant-like abilities following a head injury or stroke. Showing that these phenomena point convincingly towards a reservoir of untapped potential - an inner savant capacity - within us all, he looks both at how savant skills can be nurtured, and how they can help the person who has them, particularly if that person is on the autism spectrum. A central colour section contains the extraordinary artwork of some of the savants who are mentioned in the book. Islands of Genius will intrigue anyone who has ever wondered what makes the mind of a savant tick, as well as clinicians, parents, teachers, therapists, and others who care for, and about, individuals with savant syndrome.Trade ReviewDarold Treffert's Islands of Genius provides a fascinating and richly detailed account of the clinical and neuropsychological aspects of savant syndrome, the presence of very unusual abilities in persons with developmental disabilities. Treffert shares his lifetime of interest and learning, through clinical work and research, about persons with savant syndrome in this well-organized, timely, and respectful work... Here is a respectful, humanistic, optimistic book written by a master clinician-scientist who sees the whole person: history, gifts and challenges, environment, relationships. The book is a fascinating read that can be easily accessed by college students, professionals, and people in the general population who are interested in savant syndrome, including parents. -- American Journal of PsychiatryThis is a beautifully written, inspiring and fascinating book by the man who probably knows more than anyone else about savant syndrome - the rare condition in which some individuals with disorders such as autism have one or more areas of ability or brilliance: ''islands of genius''. -- Human GivensNo one in the world can match Darold Treffert's experience and understanding of savant syndromes - he has spent nearly half a century immersed in the subject. And when he writes of the "beautiful" mind of the savant, Treffert shows the openness and generosity of his own mind. Islands of Genius brings us fully up to date with the latest research, and like all of Treffert's work, it is imbued with deep intellectual and emotional understanding. This is an indispensable examination of a remarkable human condition. -- Oliver Sacks, Professor of Neurology & Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical CenterThis book takes you on a wondrous journey through the mind of savants. Their abilities need to be nurtured and developed. Everyone who is interested in the human mind should read this important book. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in PicturesFew people would or should want to learn to recite Pi to 22,514 decimal places, draw landmarks in breathtaking detail, or remember the contents of 12,000 books. Everyone is different. By refusing to gawp at these feats, preferring instead to focus on the person behind them, Dr Treffert sends out the message that it is the creative, imaginative processes at the root of such abilities that matter most. Only by considering the context of savants' lives can we more fully and properly understand the gifts that they possess. -- from the foreword by Daniel Tammet, author of Born On A Blue DayThis reviewer has had a great experience by reading this book and recommend it warmly to all colleagues. -- Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association (translated from the Norwegian)Walk through a bookstore or library these days, and you'll find several dozen books on the workings of your brain. I believe, though, that this one is quite likely the most intriguing of all. Using case studies, reader-friendly medicine, and contagious curiosity, Treffert leads his readers on a tour of one facet of brain science that even Hollywood seems taken with, but about which few books are written... Armchair scientists, parents, educators, and anybody with an interest in brain works will find "Islands of Genius" fascinating and fresh. For you, savoring this book is a true no-brainer. -- Washington InformerDarold Treffert's Islands of Genius provides a fascinating and richly detailed account of the clinical and neuropsychological aspects of savant syndrome, the presence of very unusual abilities in persons with developmental disabilities. Treffert shares his lifetime of interest and learning, through clinical work and research, about persons with savant syndrome in this well-organized, timely, and respectful work... The book is a fascinating read that can be easily accessed by college students, professionals, and people in the general population who are interested in savant syndrome, including parents. The author is deeply respectful of the talents of those with savant syndrome and sees these as evidence of great talent to be more fully developed, as a source of satisfaction and meaning for the talented person and a source of betterment of others. He understands people with savant syndrome as part of the whole society--not as separate, interesting "cases" but rather as growing, developing, immensely talented people involved in relationships, loved by others, and demonstrating the brain plasticity and capacity that is available to all of us. -- The American Journal of PsychiatryFor nearly half a century, Darold Treffert has single-mindedly pursued one focus: unraveling the mystery of the mind of the savant. This book is his third on savant personalities, and his vivid pictures of savant skills are always presented as attributes of real people--not as features of a clinical syndrome (Treffert, 1989, 2006). He views savants as extraordinary people with extraordinary strengths, not extraordinary weaknesses or deficits. This latest work is rich with personal histories of individuals whose unique skills would be difficult to explain in people who are labeled gifted and talented, and would be even more difficult to explain in persons diagnosed as having a disability such as autism. -- American Psychological AssociationHe never writes of savants as simply curiosities and the tenderness with which he relates their stories and those of their carers could serve as an example to us all. -- British Journal of PsychiatryTable of ContentsForeword by Daniel Tammet. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Autism Spectrum, Sexuality and the Law: What
Book SynopsisBased on Nick Dubin's own experience, and drawing on the extensive knowledge of Dr Tony Attwood and Dr Isabelle Hénault, this important book addresses the issues surrounding the autism spectrum, sexuality and the law. The complex world of sex and appropriate sexual behaviour can be extremely challenging for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and, without guidance, many find themselves in vulnerable situations. This book examines how the ASD profile typically affects sexuality and how sexual development differs between the general population and those with ASD. It explains the legalities of sexual behaviour, how laws differ from country to country, and the possibility for adjustment of existing laws as they are applied to the ASD population. With advice on how to help people with autism spectrum disorder gain a better understanding of sexuality and a comprehensive list of resources, the book highlights the need for a more informed societal approach to the psychosexual development of people with ASD.A ground-breaking and honest account, this book will be an invaluable addition to the shelves of parents of children with ASD, mental health and legal professionals, teachers, carers and other professionals working with individuals on the spectrum.Trade Review“In bravely revealing his thoughts, insights, and marshaling top experts in the field of autism and sexuality, Nick Dubin has turned a devastating involvement with the criminal justice system into an educational and learning experience. A must read for anyone supporting those on the autism spectrum in the vital area of sexuality.” -- Stephen M. Shore, Ed.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Special Education at Adelphi University, Internationally known consultant, educator, and author on issues related to the autism spectrum“Sexuality is among the most important issues in the field of ASD that no one is talking about. Well, finally that silence has been broken with an incredibly honest, moving, fascinating and informative volume. The chapters by the family, whose son was charged with viewing child pornography, are among the most honest, gripping, and intense I have ever read and include a fantastic chapter by the son himself. In addition there are two chapters written by renowned international experts in the field which contain clear, comprehensive, and practical advice about sexuality related to people on the Autism Spectrum. Readers of this book will be rewarded with a whole new understanding of the major issues concerning sexuality and sexual development in ASD and will come away from this book deeply moved, surprised, and fully informed about the most important current issues in the field.” -- Gary B. Mesibov, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of North Carolina“This courageous, insightful and provocative book opens a timely and urgent discussion on a difficult topic, presenting multiple perspectives on an issue of enormous consequence. As a lawyer who has walked with clients and families through ordeals similar to this one, I'm grateful to Nick Dubin and his co-authors for illuminating an issue too often shrouded in secrecy and shame. This book should be of wide interest to those in law enforcement and the criminal justice system as well as clinicians, individuals with autism and their families.” -- Lisa Greenman, criminal defence attorney specialising in issues relating to developmental disability and mental health and co-founder of Take-2, a summer program for children with autism, Washington, DC“Rarely has a major challenge of national import to our law enforcement and legal systems been more eloquently expressed than through this courageous story of one remarkable young man, bewildered by his own entanglements. This book may not alleviate the suffering of many before him; but it should prevent the destruction of many lives of adults with Asperger's syndrome whose fragile balance act within a society they struggle to adjust to is violently shaken by a system too rigid to understand, too self-righteous to be just, and too unforgiving to consider facts and clinical knowledge. Mr. Dubin, together with two of the foremost experts in the field, have given a powerful voice to a mission that belongs to us all: to correct an injustice that is still largely unknown but to the many families whose lives unravel at the strike of a sudden door knock.” -- Ami Klin PhD, Marcus Autism Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine“I was deeply moved by Nick Dubin's candid account of his frightening experience in the criminal justice system. This compelling and informative book shows how prosecutors can overreach in their pursuit of a criminal conviction with devastating consequences to individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Hopefully, this seminal work will shed some light on a long neglected subject and jumpstart a discussion in the legal system that includes compassion and understanding.” -- Bradley Schram, former prosecutor and founding shareholder with the law firm, Hertz Schram PC, Bloomfield Hills, MichiganThe story of Nick Dubin is sadly becoming a more common occurrence. His experience as an individual with high functioning autism is one of being misunderstood and unfortunately undiagnosed until the age of 27. This book describes the compelling story of a young man caught up in a nightmare where his symptoms of autism and an uninformed criminal justice system collide. Attwood, Henault, Mr. Dubin and his parents offer a glimpse of a possible reality that even though it is not commonly understood, many autistic teens and young adults have had to experience. Understanding societal rules for meeting others, for the development of interpersonal relationships, and sexuality in general are complex topics for any teen and young adult; it is especially complex for those on the autism spectrum. Proactive education is not only important, it is essential for those on the autism spectrum for without clear guidelines of what is right or wrong, what is allowed and what is illegal, and how to meet and express one's sexual feelings and needs, there will inevitably be more and more people on the autism spectrum finding themselves in the criminal justice system. This book is a brilliant first step or wake up call for individuals on the autism spectrum as well as their families. -- Lawrence R. Sutton, Ph.D., former Psychologist/Manager, Dept. of Public Welfare, Bureau of Autism, Western Region, State of PennsylvaniaAs the father of a 21-year-old son with autism and as a forensic psychologist who has been diagnosing sex offenders for 40 years, I have an opinion on this subject. It is critical that high functioning persons with autism read this book; and even more critical for the parents or guardians of persons with autism to read this book. -- Michael C. Teague, Ph.D., former Raleigh Police Department Psychologist and former Chief of the Violent Crimes Section, North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public SafetyThe premise of this book is to take a specific circumstance and make it tangible and educational for individuals affected by autism spectrum disorders (ASD), their families, care providers, doctors, therapists, and legal counsel. Unfortunately, it falls short of the mark because some of the contributors seemingly don't make the effort to put power into their pull. Nick Dubin's (The Autism Spectrum and Depression) tale is disturbing and will be particularly difficult to accept by those who were victims of childhood abuse. His father's chapter, however, is gripping and filled with applicable information. The book is worth reading simply for this section. Attwood's (psychology, Griffith Univ., Australia; The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome) entry is the most disappointing, considering his monumentally influential work in the field of ASD literature. Isabelle Hénault (Asperger's Syndrome and Sexuality) does what was expected of Attwood, taking readers through developing sexuality, how social and relational deficits in conjunction with bullying and conflicting sexual sensory data can cause those with ASD to struggle with their sexual identity. She provides information for therapists and psychologists that will assist them in identifying risk factors and in helping their clients. VERDICT This title is not for those who are teaching emerging adolescents about their sexuality (Davida Hartman's Sexuality and Relationship Education for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders is a more targeted guide) but is appropriate for those who feel they, or their clients, are already struggling with this intense issue. -- Library JournalTable of Contents1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Can't You Hear Them?: The Science and
Book SynopsisThe experience of 'hearing voices', once associated with lofty prophetic communications, has fallen low. Today, the experience is typically portrayed as an unambiguous harbinger of madness caused by a broken brain, an unbalanced mind, biology gone wild. Yet an alternative account, forged predominantly by people who hear voices themselves, argues that hearing voices is an understandable response to traumatic life-events. There is an urgent need to overcome the tensions between these two ways of understanding 'voice hearing'.Simon McCarthy-Jones considers neuroscience, genetics, religion, history, politics and not least the experiences of many voice hearers themselves. This enables him to challenge established and seemingly contradictory understandings and to create a joined-up explanation of voice hearing that is based on evidence rather than ideology.Trade ReviewAn engaging enquiry into the psychology and neuroscience of voice hearing that explores hallucinated voices in all their fascinating forms. -- Vaughan Bell, University College London, UKA remarkable book about voice hearing, which provides an accessible account of the science, but does not lose track of the meaning of the experience. It is compassionate, controversial and compelling! -- Chris Cook, Professor of Spirituality, Theology & Health at Durham University, UKWith rigorous science, penetrating analyses, colourful and enjoyable prose, and an astonishing breadth of knowledge - Simon McCarthy-Jones has delivered a book that will undeniably be appreciated by many. -- Frank Larøi, University of Bergen, Norway and University of Liège, BelgiumOn finishing this book my initial instinct was to re-read it in order to appreciate its insights for a second time. Can't You Hear Them? is not only a work of impressive scholarship but a compelling, beautifully-written story of human experience and endeavour. -- Dr Eleanor Longden, Psychosis Research Unit, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, UKA brilliant and thoughtful travel into the complex experience of hearing voices. Superbly written, with intelligence, but also a delightful sense of humour, this book will become an indispensable addition to the bookshelves of clinicians, scientists and people who hear voices. -- Renaud Jardri, MD, PhD, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Lille, FranceClinicians should recommend this volume to their patients, scientists should recommend it to their students, and voice hearers should recommend it to others in the voice hearing community. Profile Books Ltd Confidence: The surprising truth about how much
Book SynopsisWe're told that the key to success in life and business is confidence: believe in yourself, and the world is yours. But building confidence can be a challenging task. And, as leading psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic argues, confidence can actually get in the way of achievement; self-esteem is nothing without competence, the core skills, to back it up. Confidence is feeling capable. Competence is being capable. None of the figures whose success is put down to supreme self-belief, Barack Obama, Madonna, Muhammad Ali could have achieved their goals without the hard-won skills (and years of training) behind the confidence mask. Successful people are confident because of their success, and not the other way around. Whether you want to improve your social skills, get a promotion or that all-important first job, this game-changing exploration of how to build success, in the mould of Robert Cialdini's Influence, Susan Cain's Quiet and Steven Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, will change the way you think about achievement.Trade ReviewChamorro-Premuzic has rethought confidence - a fresh, more balanced, approach, presented in a well-researched, accessible, and, enjoyable format. I like this book: a lot -- Robert KelseyConfidence nails it - read this book and you will never look at the concept of self-esteem the same way again -- Laura VanderkamPersuasive ... fantastically sensible -- Lucy Kellaway * Financial Times *I can't remember the last time I finished reading a book and wanted to applaud. Confidence is a life-changing book - it will convince you -- Heidi Grant HalvorsonMaybe you have always intuited, as most sensitive people do, that all the talk about boosting self-confidence and raising self-esteem is not the answer to success or happiness. This charming and thoroughly fact-based book will give you the evidence to back your wisdom, that being kind and competent works best. -- Elaine Aron, author of 'The Highly Sensitive Person' and 'The Undervalued Self'

Rutgers University Press Self-Alteration: How People Change Themselves
Book SynopsisMany of us feel a pressing desire to be different—to be other than who we are. Self-conscious, we anxiously perceive our shortcomings or insufficiencies, wondering why we are how we are and whether we might be different. Often, we wish to alter ourselves, to change our relationships, and to transform the person we are in those relationships. Not only a philosophical question about how other people change, self-alteration is also a practical care—can I change, and how? Self-Alteration: How People Change Themselves across Cultures explores and analyzes these apparently universal hopes and their related existential dilemmas. The essays here come at the subject of the self and its becoming through case studies of modes of transformation of the self. They do this with social processes and projects that reveal how the self acquires a non-trivial new meaning in and through its very process of alteration. By focusing on ways we are allowed to change ourselves, including through religious and spiritual traditions and innovations, embodied participation in therapeutic programs like psychoanalysis and gendered care services, and political activism or relationships with animals, the authors in this volume create a model for cross-cultural or global analysis of social-self change that leads to fresh ways of addressing the 'self' itself. Trade Review"This remarkable volume casts new light on our understanding of selfhood, by looking at the ways different people in different contexts alter themselves."— Jon P. Mitchell, author of Ambivalent Europeans: Ritual, Memory and the Public Sphere in Malta "Anthropology has only recently focused on one of the basic human experiences: that people set out to change themselves, and they do so using the tools that their culture offers to them. This volume presents a rich array of observations around this theme to carry the conversation forward."— Tanya Luhrmann, author of How God Becomes Real: Kindling the Presence of Invisible OthersTable of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: A Time for Change: Modes of Self-Alteration Jean-Paul Baldacchino and Christopher Houston Part I: Religious Cultures, Spiritual Practices, and Self-Alteration Chapter 2 Exemplary Masters, Exemplary Reeds: Pedagogies of Self-Alteration in Sufi Music Banu Şenay Chapter 3 Re-imagining Self and Self-Alteration in Contemporary New Age, Pagan and Neo-Shamanic Spiritualities Kathryn Rountree Chapter 4 Wounded by Grace: Becoming a Prophet in an Evangelical Revival in Solomon Islands Jaap Timmer Part II: Self-Alteration and Political Activism Chapter 5 Fabricating the New Man and Woman: Self-Alteration Through Revolutionary Socialism Christopher Houston Chapter 6 Transcendental Terror: Zen Self-Transformation through White Supremacist Atrocity, from Nazi Germany to Utøya and Christchurch Max Harwood Part III: Gendered Bodies and Therapeutic Interventions Chapter 7 Beautiful, Moral, Functional: Bodily Self-Alteration in an Italian Centre for Eating Disorders Gisella Orsini Chapter 8 Porous Individuality as Self-Alteration: Commercial Self-Improvement in Urban China Gil Hizi Chapter 9 How Is Psychoanalysis a Mode of Self-Alteration?
