New York University Press Health Care in Crisis
Book SynopsisAn inside look into how hospitals, nurses, and patients are faring under the Affordable Care Act More and more not-for-profit hospitals are becoming financially unstable and being acquired by large hospital systems. The effects range from not having necessary life-saving equipment to losing the most experienced nurses to better jobs at other hospitals. In Health Care in Crisis, Theresa Morris takes an in-depth look at how this unintended consequence of the Affordable Care Act plays out in a non-profit hospital's obstetrical ward. Based on ethnographic observations of and in-depth interviews with obstetrical nurses and hospital administrators at a community, not-for-profit hospital in New England, Health Care in Crisis examines how nurses' care of patients changed over the three-year period in which the Affordable Care Act was implemented, state Medicaid funds to hospitals were slashed, and hospitals were being acquired by a for-profit hospital system. Morris explains how the tumultuousTrade Review"Morris's detailed focus on hardworking individuals at one hospital shows in microcosm the difficult strains that plague our health care system writ large; as such, this book stands as a cautionary tale." * Choice *"Theresa Morris embeds herself with one hospital's nurses to witness firsthand how financial pressures on the institution impact patients at a particularly vulnerable moment in their lives: when they are giving birth. The news isn't good. Nurses are key here, and policy is driving them away from giving good patient care, in the delivery room and beyond. Healthcare in Crisis is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand how our health system is failing patients, especially women and babies. Too often nurses have been left out of the conversation. Morris puts them in the center." -- Jennifer Block, Author of Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care"Theresa Morris's Health Care in Crisis offers an engaging treatment of organizational change. Using a community hospital as her focus, and the Affordable Care Act as the catalyst, she examines the ways in which institutional responses affect the nurse-patient relationship. Studying a maternity unit, and paying particular attention to care delivery, the author demonstrates that the ways in which health care systems are financed really matters." -- Beth Mintz, Author of Lesbians in Academia: Degrees of Freedom"In this compelling in-depth ethnography, Morris captures what its like to work as a labor and delivery nurse at a public community hospital in uncertain times. The administrators, reeling from the effects of some penalizing policies of the Affordable Care Act, seek a corporate buyer to relieve the hospitals economic distress. Morris illustrates how interlocking changes in finances and policies result in overworked nurses and negatively impact the care of women and babies. Healthcare in Crisis clearly documents the need for a single-payer system that values patient-centered medical service providers." -- Wendy Simonds, Author of Hospital Land USA: Sociological Adventures in Medicalization"Theresa Morris offers a careful analysis of how the intimate interaction between nurse and patient is embedded in the social dynamics of the workplace, in the occasionally tense relations of authority between professions, in the hospital’s budgetary constraints, and in the uncertainties of federal and state healthcare policy in the last decade. Morris’ thoroughly detailed and highly readable ethnography provides a vivid account of how these forces shape nurses’ work lives, with broad political and economic turmoil percolating down to the front lines of patient care." * Social Forces *"Health Care in Crisis offers a significant contribution to the sociology of public policy, medicine and health, organizations, and workplaces. It also represents a compelling investigation of uncertainty and unintended consequences. Highly readable and engaging, the book is well suited for adoption in undergraduate and graduate courses on medical sociology, work, social problems, and qualitative methods." * American Journal of Sociology *

Book SynopsisDespite notable variation in health care policy from province to province, most scholarship published on the health care system in Canada uses a broad national perspective. Focusing on the health care systems of individual Canadian provinces and territories, our new series, Health System Profiles, examines the social, political, economic, and epidemiological context of health care policy in each Canadian province. Turning a critical eye to the health care system in Nova Scotia, author Katherine Fierlbeck outlines the organizational and regulatory frameworks structuring provincial health care, while providing a detailed assessment of Nova Scotia’s health financing, physical infrastructure, service provision, and the efficacy of technological resources used in data tracking and health quality assessments. University of Toronto Press A Mohawk Memoir from the War of 1812
Book SynopsisA Mohawk Memoir from the War of 1812 presents the story of John Norton, or Teyoninhokarawen, an important war chief and political figure among the Grand River Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) in Upper Canada. Norton saw more action during the conflict than almost anyone else, being present at the fall of Detroit; the capture of Fort Niagara; the battles of Queenston Heights, Fort George, Stoney Creek, Chippawa, and Lundy’s Lane; the blockades of Fort George and Fort Erie; and a large number of skirmishes and front-line patrols. His memoir describes the fighting, the stresses suffered by indigenous peoples, and the complex relationships between the Haudenosaunee and both their British allies and other First Nations communities. Norton’s account, written in 1815 and 1816, provides nearly one-third of the book’s content, with the remainder consisting of Carl Benn’s introductions and annotations, which enable readers to understand Norton’s fTrade Review“A significant achievement ... University of Nebraska Press Bodies of Truth
Book Synopsis“Medicine still contains an oral tradition, passed down in stories: the stories patients tell us, the ones we tell them, and the ones we tell ourselves” writes contributor Madaline Harrison. Bodies of Truth continues this tradition through a variety of narrative approaches by writers representing all facets of health care.Trade Review"Those seeking a fuller picture of what it's like living with disease or disability, as well as educators looking for teachable essays for a medical humanities class or writing group, will find this work outstanding."—Aaron Klink, Library Journal“Bodies of Truth takes us to a world of miraculous drugs and drug addictions, of doctors who wonder how to shake hands with the prisoners they treat and nurses who come to confession because death has worked its way into their souls. Above all, it’s truth: that our bodies, and the bodies of those we love and care for, so often take us to places we never knew existed, to find strengths we never knew we had. If illness and death are lonesome roads we must at some point travel, I can’t think of a more fitting companion than this volume. The writers here come as strangers to us, but they bring us gifts—their stories—that connect us whether in pain or compassion.”—Paul Shepherd, editor of Hospital Drive and author of More Like Not Running Away“I read Bodies of Truth almost in one sitting, so compelling are the stories. To read this many of them—different illnesses and disabilities, and from different perspectives—is strangely heartening. This is all of us, represented here, wounded in one way or another or looking after the wounded. If we can say how it is, and be listened to, surely the exposure will heal a lot of festering. I am glad to have this beautifully orchestrated, passionately written collection.”—Fleda Brown, author of My Wobbly Bicycle: Meditations on Cancer and the Creative Life“Bodies of Truth offers personal accounts of individuals caught up in the lived experience of illness. . . . They are not necessarily asking us to judge, to change the world, or even to react. They merely ask, as did Coleridge’s ancient mariner, that we pause to hear the tale, setting aside for a moment the tasks at hand.”—Jacek L. Cornell University Press The Caring Class
Book SynopsisThe number of elderly and disabled Americans in need of home health care is increasing annually, even as the pool of peoplealmost always womenwilling to do this job gets smaller and smaller. The Caring Class takes readers inside the reality of home health care by following the lives of women training and working as home health aides in the South Bronx.Richard Schweid examines home health care in detail, focusing on the women who tend to our elderly and disabled loved ones and how we fail to value their work. They are paid minimum wage so that we might be absent, getting on with our own lives. The book calls for a rethinking of home health care and explains why changes are urgent: the current system offers neither a good way to live nor a good way to die. By improving the job of home health aide, Schweid shows, we can reduce income inequality and create a pool of qualified, competent home health care providers who would contribute to the well-being of us all. Trade ReviewSchweid treats his subjects and their community with generosity of heart and purpose. He places these women and their stories in the foreground, and the entire book benefits from that choice. Schweid approaches the dilemmas within the home health aide profession from numerous informative angles, but his writing remains broadly accessible. As a result, The Caring Class is easy to imagine in the hands of undergraduates, or even thoughtful high schoolers, studying all manner of subjects related to the social sciences or public health. * Chapter 16 *The Caring Class is an extremely readable and informative book for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners alike. Wilfrid Laurier University Press Gender, Health, and Popular Culture: Historical Perspectives
Book SynopsisHealth is a gendered concept in Western cultures. Customarily it is associated with strength in men and beauty in women. This gendered concept was transmitted through visual representations of the ideal female and male bodies, and ubiquitous media images resulted in the absorption of universal standards of beauty and health and generalized desires to achieve them. Today, genuine or self-styled experts--from physicians to newspaper columnists to advertisers--offer advice on achieving optimal health. Topics in this collection are wide ranging and include childbirth advice in Victorian Australia and Cold War America, menstruation films, Canadian abortion tourism, the Pap smear, the Body Worlds exhibition, and fat liberation. Masculinity is explored among drunkards in antebellum Philadelphia and family memoirs during the 1980s AIDS epidemic. Seemingly objective public health advisories are shown to be as influenced by commercial interests, class, gender, and other social differentiations as marketing approaches are, and the message presented is mediated to varying degrees by those receiving it. This book will be of interest to scholars in women's studies, health studies, marketing, media studies, social history and anthropology, and popular culture.Trade Review``Krasnick Warsh's edited collection succeeds in providing a wide variety of interesting analyses that examine the historical intersections of gender, health, and popular culture.'' -- Rebecca Godderis, Wilfrid Laurier University -- Canadian Bulletin of Medical History, Volume 29, number 2, 2012``The articles convincingly show how gender has influenced various aspect of health experiences, including the flow of information, the availability of services, and displays of healthfulness.... [In the first section] the authors are careful to tease apart the public health discourse from the patterns of behaviou and advice set by women themselves as they encounter different sets of experts claiming to know what is best for women's bodies.... The remaining articles on bodily representations highlight some of the innovative work being done in this field by exploring more recent manifestations of gendered identities and creatively challenging the idea of women as a collective.... Taken together, these essays provide sophisticated models for exploring the interplay between health and gender as represented in popular culture.... Although the majority of articles focus on Canadian developments, the North American breadth creates space for comparative studies, such as the one explored in the side-by-side articles on cervial cancer screening programs in the US and Canada. The book will likely appeal to a wide variety of readers with interests in health, feminism, reproduction, and body politics and offers a provocative collection of historically engaging and historiographically rich articles.'' -- Erika Dyck, University of Saskatchewan -- Labour / Le Travail, 70, 201302``This important work will be a welcome addition to the literature, especially in the North American context, where most of the essays are situated. No other work attempts to draw together these disparate fields of study, and the volume's inclusion of popular culture is what makes it so truly innovative.'' -- Jane Nicholas, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, ON -- 201101Table of ContentsTable of Contents for Gender, Health, and Popular Culture, edited by Cheryl Krasnick Warsh Introduction | Cheryl Krasnick Warsh Part I: The Transmission of Health Information Confined: Constructions of Childbirth in Popular and Elite Medical Culture in Late Nineteenth-Century Australia | Lisa Featherstone Eating for Two: Shaping Mothers' Figures and Babies' Futures in Modern American Culture | Lisa Forman Cody Advice to Adolescents: Menstrual Health and Menstrual Education Films, 1946-1982 | Sharra L. University of Massachusetts Press Popular Print and Popular Medicine: Almanacs and
Book SynopsisIn this innovative study of the relationship between popular print and popular attitudes toward the body, health, and disease in antebellum America, Thomas A. Horrocks focuses our attention on a publication long neglected by scholars - the almanac. Approaching his subject as both a historian of the book and a historian of medicine, Horrocks contends that the almanac, the most popular secular publication in America from the late eighteenth century to the first quarter of the nineteenth, both shaped and was shaped by early Americans' beliefs and practices pertaining to health and medicine.Analyzing the astrological, therapeutic, and regimen advice offered in American almanacs over two centuries, and comparing it with similar advice offered in other genres of popular print of the period, Horrocks effectively demonstrates that the almanac was a leading source of health information in America prior to the Civil War. He contends that the almanac was an integral component of a complicated, fragmented, semi-vernacular health literature of the period, and that the genre played a leading role in disseminating astrological health advice as well as shaping contemporary and future perceptions of astrology. In terms of therapeutic and regimen advice, Horrocks asserts that the almanac performed a complementary role, confirming and reinforcing traditional beliefs and practices. By analyzing the almanac as a cultural artifact that represents a time, a place, and a certain set of assumptions and beliefs, he demonstrates that the genre can provide a lens through which scholars may examine early American attitudes and practices concerning their health in particular and American popular culture in general.Trade ReviewGiven the wide readership of almanacs in early America and their importance to the business of printing and publishing, the neglect of scholarship on almanacs verges on the scandalous.... Horrocks's intense focus, his broad range of primary sources, his grasp of the positions of other scholars, his crisp argumentation, and his clear, accessible prose combine to make this a valuable study. - E. Temple University Press,U.S. Alternative Health Care
Book SynopsisIn November of 1998 The Journal of the American Medical Association devoted an entire issue to alternative medicine for the first time in its publishing history. According to survey results reported in the journal, 83 million Americans used some form of alternative medicine to preserve and maintain their health in 1997, a sharp increase from the 61 million who turned to alternative forms of care in 1990. Michael S. Goldstein's Alternative Health Care is the first comprehensive account of the growing presence of alternative medicine in American society. Beginning with the basic premises of alternative medicine, Goldstein's book examines the clinical, economic, and political realities of the broad range of alternative care options and practices in the United States and explains why alternative medicine has become a viable choice for so many people who are ill or who seek to remain healthy. Bringing history, policy, practice, personal experience, and in-depth sociological analysis together into one comprehensive volume, Goldstein -- one of the first recipients of funding from the National Institute of Health for research on alternative medicine -- also studies the complexities of the relationship between spirituality and alternative medicine and the changing role of alternative medicine in the larger context of American health care. Probing such issues as the corporatization of medicine, the role of alternative medicine in health care, and the dynamic relationship between conventional and alternative treatments, Goldstein's Alternative Health Care is more than the long-awaited introduction to the many forms of alternative medicine. It is also the measure of the implications of such care for practitioners, businesses, policymakers, and patients alike. Alternative Health Care is the definitive guide for the millions of Americans interested in alternative medicine and treatment, American health care, the sociology of medicine, and American social issues.Trade Review"An important book and an informative, challenging and fun read. Goldstein's Alternative Health Care is the first, and greatly needed, extended overview of alternative health care, its development, and its impact." -Alexandra Todd, Professor and Chair of Sociology at Suffolk University "...[C]learly supportive of alternative medicine, [Goldstein] provides a logical explanation for its popularity that might enlighten its opponents. He explains alternative health care in the context of the problems with conventional health care. Indeed, looking at how these two worlds fit together or react to each other yields valuable information on how each field can respond better to patients." -Los Angeles Times "The author looks at the ethos of alternative medicine and examines broader questions of a possible 'paradigm shift' in medicine and whether alternative medicine might be integrated into mainstream medicine, given the current state of health care. Goldstein describes the range of alternative care, explores its popularity, its relation to spirituality, and its place in both the medical market and the current political climate." -The Hastings Center ReportTable of ContentsCONTENTS The Emergence of Alternative Medicine Victims of Medicine Mind and Body Health and Community Preventing versus Curing Crisis and Change in the Health Care System The Synergy of Complaint: Birth of a Grievance The Core of Alternative Medicine: Age Old Wisdom Made New Holism The Interpenetration of Mind, Body, and Spirit Health as a Positive State on a Continuum with Illness Life Suffused by the Flow of Energy Vitalism The Healing Process The Core of Alternative Medicine Medicine and the Spirit Spirituality in America Science and Spirit Conventional Medicine's Response Turning Religion into Medicine Turning Medicine into Religion Spirituality's Impact on the Future of Alternative Medicine Is There Really an Alternative Medicine? Temple University Press,U.S. Vegetarianism: Movement Or Moment: Promoting A
Book SynopsisVegetarianism seems to be increasing in popularity and acceptance in the United States and Canada, yet, quite surprisingly, the percentage of the population practicing vegetarian diets has not changed dramatically over the past 30 years. People typically view vegetarianism as a personal habit or food choice, even though organizations in North America have been promoting vegetarianism as a movement since the 1850s. This book examines the organizational aspects of vegetarianism and tries to explain why the predominant movement strategies have not successfully attracted more people to adopt a vegetarian identity. Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment? is the first book to consider the movement on a broad scale from a social science perspective. While this book takes into account the unique history of North American vegetarianism and the various reasons why people adopt vegetarian diets, it focuses on how movement leaders' beliefs regarding the dynamics of social change contributes to the selection of particular strategies for attracting people to vegetarianism. In the context of this focus, this book highlights several controversies about vegetarianism that have emerged in nutrition and popular media over the past 30 years. Author note: Donna Maurer is a long-time vegetarian and freelance academic editor who also teaches online for the University of Maryland University College, where she is Adjunct Associate Professor of Sociology. She has co-edited three books on food and body weight issues (with Jeffery Sobal), including Eating Agendas: Food and Nutrition as Social Problems. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Study of Food and Society.Trade Review"Donna Maurer's Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment? is the best resource on vegetarianism I have ever read. This book is not only filled with information; it is as readable as a best-selling novel. I was drawn into the book from start to finish and I loved reading every page."-Howard F. Lyman, author of Mad Cowboy "Donna Maurer offers a great service by taking us inside the modern vegetarian movement. She does a very fine job of explaining why people do and do not stop eating meat. [It] will serve as the basic guide to American vegetarianism for many years to come."-Warren Belasco, author of Appetite for Change: How the Counterculture Took on the Food Industry "All new vegetarian advocates should read Dr. Maurer's book. It will give them an understanding of the issues. It shows both where the movement has come from and the outreach methods it has attempted. If someone were to read Vegetarianism early in their advocacy, it would quickly advance their thought on the subject, saving them years of discovering things on their own."-Jack Norris, R.D., President, Vegan Outreach "As both a careful sociologist and a committed vegan, Donna Maurer brings fresh insight into the multi-dimensional character of vegetarianism in the United States: its values, assumptions, and practices."-Amy Bently, Department of Nutrition and Food Studies, New York University "[This book does] a good job of describing the history of a particular movement that has not received a lot of well-researched coverage."-KliattTable of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgments1. Book SynopsisThe first book to explore the effects of dramatic changes in the delivery of medical careTrade Review"The Gold Standard is an engaging, well thought-out examination of a timely topic-evidence-based medicine. Timmermans and Berg raise taken-for-granted concepts such as power, objectivity, standardization, EBM and discuss them in innovative and complicated interpretations. The arguments presented here provide clarity on animportant subject, highlighting the always interesting impact of unintended consequences."-Alexandra Dundas Todd, Department of Sociology, Suffolk University, and author of Double Vision, An East-West Collaboration for Coping with Cancer "The Gold Standard is an intelligent and well-written analysis of crucial developments in biomedical practice over the past century. Timmermans and Berg provide us with a comprehensive study of the growing movement to standardize biomedicine, calling attention to the risks and benefits for doctors and patients alike. This unique and important book should attract interest among medical sociologists, science studies scholars, bioethicists, health policy analysts, and all those who care about the practice of medicine today."-Steven Epstein, Department of Sociology, University of California, San Diego, and author of Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge "This book sets the standard for the study of standardization in medicine. Focusing on evidence based medicine's meteoric rise and influence, Timmermans and Berg go beyond the professional rhetoric to examine its impact on the practice of medicine. Well-written and replete with sociological case studies, this book is must reading for social scientists, physicians and policy-makers."-Peter Conrad, Harry Coplan Professor of Social Sciences, Brandeis University "It is rare to find a book that can serve both as an excellent introduction to its subject for people who have not previously given it much thought or study and also as an advanced reading for people who know the subject area well. Happily, The Gold Standard is such a book."-The Journal of Legal Medicine "This eminently readable book is recommended to healthcare industry personnel and to policy makers who would be interested in a thoughtful study of the political, ethical, and functional aspects of the standardization of clinical behavior."-Quality Management in Health Care "[T]his is a surprising work...its scope places it in the realm of monumental works like Paul Starr's Pulitzer-Prize winning [book]. This book is highly recommended...especially to those grappling with the challenge of creating consistently high-quality health care at a cost our nation can afford."-Inquiry "...a highly readable and comprehensive book... I can recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the subject."-Medicine Health Care and Philosophy: A European Journal (pdf) "This book is helpful to physicians and healthcare executives who need to have a better understanding of the evolution and application of evidence-based medicine."-The Journal of the National Medical AssociationTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: The Politics of Standardization1. Michigan State University Press Taking Care of Time
Book SynopsisFor poet and nurse practitioner Cortney Davis, the truth revealed through poetry is similar to what she has experienced in the heightened and urgent dramas that occur in health care - those suspended moments in which a dying heart might be revived or unbearable suffering relieved. We are vulnerable, her poems say, and we are dependent on one another - on the ways in which we care or fail to care for one another, in how we love or fail to love.In poems that are sensual, emotionally searing, and yet unfailingly tender, Davis shines a caregiver’s light on the most intimate details of the human body and the spirit within - how the flesh might betray, how it endures, and how ultimately it triumphs.

NewSouth Publishing Vital Signs: Stories from intensive care
Book SynopsisThe majority of us now die in hospitals and many of us will end up in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the last few days of our lives. Yet for most people, what happens in an ICU remains a mystery. This collection of stories about the experiences of intensive care patients, their families and carers, is about ordinary people facing terrible tragedies and the ways they cope with them. The author, a practicing intensive care clinician, takes the reader on a journey inside an ICU and reveals to the public, for the first time, what really happens inside ICU. The book traces the personal tragedies of ICU patients and their families and the struggles of staff providing care in this critical environment. The core function of the ICU has slowly changed from being life saving to becoming life sustaining - even when there is no hope of a meaningful recovery. Admission to the ICU is often sudden and unexpected and there are few guidelines for dealing with dying under these circumstances. ICU patients are often in a coma or sedated, which means decisions relating to their care must be made by their families. Many of the stories in this collection are about the dilemmas associated with withdrawing and withholding treatment that are faced by family and medical staff in ICU each day. They are about the ways we die and the ways we deal with death. They are about the people who care for us in our last moments: not only our friends and family, but the doctors and nurses who care for us and face these tragedies daily. The book carefully details the pressures on staff and the ways they cope with the intensity of providing this level of care. It is brimming with moments of humour and sadness that cut through the institutional reality of ICU, revealing the very human experience of this institution.
