  • Textiles of the Viking North Atlantic

Boydell and Brewer Textiles of the Viking North Atlantic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAn examination of the uses, meanings, and social impact of Viking Age textiles. This volume offers the first full study of archaeological fabrics and their decoration found in the North Atlantic region and dating broadly from the Viking or Norse period. With contributions from both academic scholars and practitioners, it shows how approaching early medieval textiles from archaeological, historical and literary contexts, and through the processes of learning and employing the traditional skills of making them, brings about a more nuanced understanding of early medieval cloths: their creation, use and meanings within their respective societies. The book is divided into two parts. The first, "Textiles and their Interpretation", takes the reader on a journey from how wool was processed in the Viking Age, and the conservator's role in preserving and interpreting archaeological textiles, to different types of analyses that researchers use to understand and explain textiles from across the wide area of the Viking-influenced North Atlantic region. The second, "Understanding through Replicating", investigates the results of practical experiments in the reconstruction of surviving medieval fabrics and the resulting empirical conclusions that can be made about their manufacture and wider cultural implications.

Book SynopsisChina dominates manufacturing and is the world''s largest retail market, but for companies outside of China, finding ways to do business in the country is increasingly uncertain in the face of rising US-China tension, combined with China''s crackdowns on the tech and education sectors. Shaun Rein runs the China Market Research Group and has spent his career helping multinationals understand where the opportunities are in China. An American who''s lived in Shanghai for 25 years, he has long been one of the biggest China bulls. He now argues that while China is not a must-go destination for all companies and investors, there are still many non-politically sensitive sectors where long-term opportunities can be sought. The Splitanalysis the geo-political split between the US and China, China''s sharp turn towards socialism and how this will cut into fat margins in many sectors. It explains why corporations in sectors such as semiconductors and AI should stay clear of China and relocate to other countries like Vietnam, India and Mexico. Yet principally, Rein makes the case that that fears about China''s shift are far overblown and that for most sectors it should remain the main growth driver for even the largest companies. Expert insights into China''s national policy reforms, its rising middle class seeking to save and invest, and their focus on health and wellness, will inform the international strategic decisions for companies around the world in sectors such as finance, consumer goods and auto. China will soon eclipse the United States as the world''s largest economy and companies will lose out if they do not know how to invest in China properly. No company has been able to get into China for 3 years. Shaun Rein hasn''t left. He''s therefore uniquely positioned to advise now that China is opening up again. The Splitpresents a unique and informed case for why the time is definitely now to capitalize on policy changes and trends in China that will support long-term opportunities for your business.

That story is told here for the first time in full detail and with unsparing honesty. It is a story of unimaginable trauma and political corruption. It brings to life a world of paramilitary secrecy and parallel laws, but above all it is the story of one young woman's defiance of the power wielded by ex-gunmen inspiring fear and silence, and their influence over elected politicians.Máiría Cahill grew up steeped in the traditions of Irish republicanism and the shadowy world of the IRA: her great-uncle Joe was one of the main founders of the Provisional IRA and her grandfather was Gerry Adams''s mentor in the republican movement. This engaging introduction to the new field of philosophical health, written by its forerunner, presents the core tenets of the discipline. It explains in clear and elegant prose how a reflexive practice of sense-making can create a eudynamic balance between six existential senses: body, self, belonging, possibility, purpose, and the philosophical sense.Luis de Miranda, inspired by nearly a decade of practice as a philosophical counsellor with individuals, groups, institutions, NGO's and corporations offers a pragmatic open system that is supported with evidence from psychological science, various philosophical traditions or contemporary theories, as well as fascinating real stories from world wisdom. Meaning in action is clearly the new way ahead for philosophy, rediscovered here as the responsible and practical big sister if not queen of all disciplines and ways of life. The

Book SynopsisEntering service in early 1941, the Dornier Do 217 was designed as an improved version of the Flying Pencil', the Do 17 bomber. The Do 217E-1 twin radial-engine bomber first flew in October 1940, the same month that the production of the Do 17 ceased. The Do 217 was initially used for conventional bombing and anti-shipping missions around the United Kingdom, including the infamous Baedeker Blitz against British provincial cities in 1942. The Do 217 was the main German bomber in this theatre until late 1943, when it started to be replaced by the Messerschmitt Me 410 and Junkers Ju 188. During this period, the Do 217E was improved, leading to the introduction of the Do 217K or M, the difference between the two being the engines. The Do 217 would be deployed in all of the Luftwaffe's campaigns and fronts in the Second World War. Curiously, though, the only operational units to use the type on the Eastern Front were the night reconnaissance units, aside from which only occasionally did

Book SynopsisLove Offers No Safety: Nigeria’s Queer Men Speak is a raw and powerful collection of 25 first-person narratives that explore the diverse experience of queer Nigerian men. These stirring stories cut across age, class, religion, ethnicity, family and relationships, offering a glimpse into what it means to survive as a queer man in Nigeria. From Tunji, who takes us back to the thriving networking community before social media, to Chukwori, who struggles to reconcile his need to serve God with his sexuality, and Abdulkarim, who frustratingly wonders if he’ll ever stop working twice as hard to be accepted, these stories are full of contradictions, anger, resiliency, profound insight, and radical hope. With heightened levels of oppression, violence, and discrimination faced by LGBTQ Nigerians due to the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Law, these voices remind us of what the queer community in Nigeria has always been fighting for - the freedom to be themselves, love themselves, and love each other, despite being viewed as unworthy. Love Offers No Safety is a heart-breaking yet hopeful reminder that love knows no boundaries and offers no safety, but it is worth fighting for.Table of ContentsTable Of Contents Introduction The Past Was More Accepting Than The Future I Was Never Alone With My Mother’s Love My Sexuality Is Part Of Me, But It Does Not Define Me Do Not Rely Too Much On Labels, For Too Often They Are Fables Navigating Loneliness The Many Faces Of Love Offers No Safety A Divine Life In Darkness, A Liberated Life In Light Between A Rock And A Hard Place As Long As I Love Myself, I Will Be Fine When I Am No Longer Afraid, I Will Stop Being Perfect My Future Is Not With A Woman My Sexuality Does Not Affects My Faith Every Man Is Born Gay Waiting On The Sideline For The Life I Desire Despite Pitfalls, I Have Triumphed In My Sexuality I Am Queer. Michael Muthukrishna is one of our greatest and most creative thinkers -- Matthew Syed, broadcaster and author of REBEL IDEAS and BLACK BOX THINKINGMuthukrishna has a heart as big as his intellect, which is saying something. A sprightly page-turner that entertains with specifics, astonishes with universals, and reframes the big issues facing humanity -- Robert Klitgaard, author of CONTROLLING CORRUPTION and TROPICAL GANGSTERSThis book, which I read with great fascination, shows how we can move beyond neoclassical economics with a firmer foundation in the natural sciences and energy. This is extremely important as the world soon, and Europe now, increasingly faces critical energy shortages. I hope this book helps more people understand the critical importance of energy in generating our current affluence, and its diminution as a probable root cause of future inflation. A failure to understand these relations is likely to cause our societies to become impossible to govern -- Charles Hall, ESF Foundation Distinguished Professor at State University of New York, inventor of the EROI metric, author of ENERGY AND THE WEALTH OF NATIONSThere is a truly wonderful idea at the heart of this book: that by exchanging things and thoughts, human beings became capable of doing and knowing far more than their meagre brains would have otherwise made possible. It is not an entirely new idea, but Michael Muthukrishna explores its extraordinary and hopeful implications with rich and thrilling energy -- Matt Ridley, author of THE EVOLUTION OF EVERYTHINGA Theory of Everyone flavorfully mixes a stunning breadth of scholarship with an impressive knowledge of pop-culture and current issues, boldly going where most social scientists fear to tread. Lucidly discussing ideas surrounding IQ, race, sex differences, inheritance taxes, religion, Microsoft and even monogamy, readers are treated to a fascinating intellectual flight that thoughtfully offers many new perspectives on old issues. Buckle up! -- Joseph Henrich, Professor of Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University and author of THE WEIRDEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD and THE SECRET OF OUR SUCCESSDo you know your own species? You might think so, but Muthukrishna will make you think again. With clarity, humor, and energy, he opens new vistas on how genes and cultures shaped who we are and how we can improve our lives together. A Theory of Everyone is for everyone -- Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Chauncey Stillman Professor of Practical Ethics, Duke University, author of THINK AGAINA Theory of Everyone uses the latest social science research to answer the critical question of how all human communities can be made to work better. Michael Muthukrishna's new "theory of everyone" reveals alarming threats to humanity's future - but also shows that once we understand the science behind society, we do have the power to produce permanent systemic solutions -- Ian Morris, Professor, Stanford Archaeology Center, Stanford University, author of GEOGRAPHY IS DESTINY - BRITAIN AND THE WORLDA Theory of Everyone delivers both an overarching theory and a practical toolkit for understanding and improving the human condition. What could be more important than that? -- David Sloan Wilson, author of THIS VIEW OF LIFEOne of today's most brilliant minds weighs in on what ails us and how to fix it. • Anteaesthetics: Black Aesthesis and the Critique

Stanford University Press Anteaesthetics: Black Aesthesis and the Critique

Book SynopsisIn Anteaesthetics, Rizvana Bradley begins from the proposition that blackness cannot be represented in modernity's aesthetic regime, but is nevertheless foundational to every representation. Troubling the idea that the aesthetic is sheltered from the antiblack terror that lies just beyond its sanctuary, Bradley insists that blackness cannot make a home within the aesthetic, yet is held as its threshold and aporia. The book problematizes the phenomenological and ontological conceits that underwrite the visual, sensual, and abstract logics of modernity. Moving across multiple histories and geographies, artistic mediums and forms, from nineteenth-century painting and early cinema, to the contemporary text-based works, video installations, and digital art of Glenn Ligon, Mickalene Thomas, and Sondra Perry, Bradley inaugurates a new method for interpretation—an ante-formalism which demonstrates how black art engages in the recursive deconstruction of the aesthetic forms that remain foundational to modernity. Foregrounding the negativity of black art, Bradley shows how each of these artists disclose the racialized contours of the body, form, and medium, even interrogating the form that is the world itself. Drawing from black critical theory, Continental philosophy, film and media studies, art history, and black feminist thought, Bradley explores artistic practices that inhabit the negative underside of form. Ultimately, Anteaesthetics asks us to think philosophically with black art, and with the philosophical invention black art necessarily undertakes.Trade Review"Anteaesthetics is the study of black aesthetics I didn't know I sorely needed. Bradley offers a razor-sharp and sumptuous meditation on black aesthetics in, through, and vestibular to an anti-black world."—Alexander Ghedi Weheliye, Brown University"Rizvana Bradley's searching theory of black aesthesis traces black art's recursions through the violent origins of the aesthetic. Anteaesthetics opens a mode of reading for black art's non-instrumental exploration of abyssal descent. An incisive and energizing book through and through."—Rei Terada, University of California, Irvine"In this brilliantly conceived and exquisitely rendered study, Bradley offers a path-breaking analysis that will revolutionize how we approach, contest, and undo the Western visual field. Timothy Raeymaekers shows how in the context of global supply chains and repressive border regimes, agrarian production and reproduction are based on fundamental racial hierarchies.Taking the example of the tomatoa typical ''Made in Italy'' commodityRaeymaekers asks how political boundaries are drawn around the land and the labor needed for its production, what technologies of exclusion and inclusion enable capitalist operations to take place in the Mediterranean agrarian frontier, and which practices structure the allocation, use and commodification of land and labor across the tomato chain. While the mobile infrastructures that mobilize, channel, commodify and segregate labor play a central role in the ''naturalization'' of racial segregation, they are also terrains of contestation and powerand thus, as The Na

In this book, two seasoned educators, one Indigenous and one settler, bring to bear their years of experience teaching in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary contexts to explore the ways in which Indigenous and Slow approaches to teaching and learning mirror and complement one another.Using the holistic framework of the Medicine Wheel, Shannon Leddy and Lorrie Miller illustrate the ways in which interdisciplinary thinking, a focus on experiential learning, and the thoughtful application of the 4Rs – Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility – can bring us back to the principle of teaching people, not subjects. Book Synopsis“Inspiring, refreshing and practical - a delightfully lucid guide to healing yourself.” -Bessel van der Kolk, MD., New York Times bestselling author of The Body Keeps the ScoreFrom two mind-body practitioners comes the new essential self-healing bible—a revolutionary body-first guide to reducing stress, resolving long-term pain, and healing from trauma for good using your body’s own nervous system.Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for the constant but mostly subconscious communication between your brain and body. When you experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, your nervous system formulates responses to keep you alive. But you can also become trapped in survival mode if you’re consistently exposed to unsafe environments, toxic relationships, or destructive thought patterns. When this happens it’s known as nervous system dysregulation or sensitization, which can result in chronic mental and physical pain and confusion, leaving you unable to cope with life’s strains and stresses.Mind-body practitioners Jen Mann and Karden Rabin, co-founders of the Chronic Fatigue School now provide the first in-depth look at nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, Polyvagal theory, the vagus nerve, and the mind-body connection. Combining science-backed insights and hands-on techniques, The Secret Language of the Body teaches you how to move out of survival mode, regulate your nervous system, and heal your mind and body. Rabin and Mann don’t teach stress management, but something far more powerful-how to control your body’s nervous system. With this revolutionary book, you will learn to skillfully speak the language of your body and train it to not only manage stress but achieve personal transformation. The Secret Language of the Body includes helpful illustrations.

Book SynopsisThe definitive guide for prospective graduate students in clinical and counseling psychology has now been updated for 2024/2025, with expert advice and profiles on 320 doctoral programs in the United States. This is the book you can rely on to find the programs that meet your needs and maximize your chances of getting in. Profiles cover each program's specializations or tracks, admission requirements, acceptance rates, financial aid, research areas, and clinical opportunities. The 2024/2025 edition discusses current developments in admissions, including the increase in GRE-optional programs and how to navigate choices around testing.Trade Review“When I started preparing to apply to clinical psychology doctoral programs, I was completely bewildered. How do I figure out what schools to apply to? What makes a good CV and statement? What should I be prepared to talk about in an interview? The Insider’s Guide answered all my questions and more, providing a well-researched and comprehensive system for building a strong application. The list of schools alone made it well worth the purchase. I honestly don’t know how I would have done it without this book. If you’re planning to go to graduate school for clinical or counseling psychology, I could not recommend this book more highly!”--Alexander Jusdanis, doctoral program applicant "An informative and essential guide for prospective graduate students. The topics are covered thoroughly, yet clearly and concisely. I was especially impressed with the book's inclusiveness--the authors acknowledge the challenges that LGBT, disabled, and racial/ethnic minority applicants may experience, even in fields that appear to be inclusive. The book would be extremely helpful for first-generation college students, who may have little knowledge about the pursuit of graduate school. The examples of CVs, letters, and emails are exceptional. This book would be a perfect supplemental text for my senior-level clinical assessment course."--Sonya Lawson Hutchinson, PhD, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Stillman College "Your book was the pivotal resource that helped me find my way to my current career. I was one of those first-generation college students who really had no idea what I was doing until I came across your book. The Insider’s Guide was truly indispensable and is largely responsible for my career today.”--Daniel J. Taylor, PhD, Professor of Psychology, University of Arizona "I highly recommend that all applicants to clinical and counseling psychology graduate programs use this excellent guide to identify programs that match their specific career interests, goals, and strengths....As the training director of an APA-accredited counseling psychology program, I appreciate the detailed instructions for preparing a compelling personal statement, creating a flawless CV, forging professional relationships that will lead to strong letters of recommendation, and interviewing successfully. It will be a pleasure to meet prospective graduate students who have put this 'insider' information to good use!"--Sharon (Sherry) Rostosky, PhD, Professor and Director of Training, Counseling Psychology, University of Kentucky "The Insider's Guide was an essential tool in helping me find the right doctoral program. When applying to graduate programs in psychology, it can be difficult to navigate between counseling or clinical, and PhD or PsyD. This book is organized in a way that helps you compare and contrast programs....There are so many programs to choose from--use this book to sort out those you are most interested in, and you will end up saving money on applications and finding the best fit."--Kimia Mansoor, PsyD student, The Wright Institute, Berkeley, California “The Insider's Guide was an invaluable resource for me as I tackled the tedious process of applying to graduate school. With so many programs out there, this book provided me with vital information to narrow down which ones would be right for me. The book provides important details on each program--such as types of funding, emphasis areas, and internship statistics--in a clear and organized manner....I recommend it to all my friends going through the process."--Mallorie Carroll, PhD, psychology resident, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston "The advice and insights in this book helped me figure out my career and research interests, and it saved me from a lot of extra effort and heartache that I experienced when I was working on the application process on my own. Highly recommended for anyone considering graduate school!"--Theresa Trieu, doctoral program applicant-The authors guide the applicant along every step of the application process. They point out the pitfalls, loopholes, benefits, and drawbacks to almost every element of applying to graduate school. They fulfill their purpose to the greatest possible degree and provide a resource that is thorough and articulate. Worry not, potential psychology graduates: the Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology is your number-one resource and will provide you with all of the information you need. (on the 2016/2017 edition)--PsychCentral.com, 9/17/2016ƒƒThe Insider's Guide focuses on the complete application process with sample documents, worksheets, and timelines. Advice, warnings, and an easy-to-read format give this book an edge over resources providing program descriptions only, such as the American Psychological Association's Graduate Study in Psychology and Peterson's Graduate Programs in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. (on the 2014/2015 edition)--American Reference Books Annual, 6/1/2015ƒƒThis updated 2024/2025 edition remains the definitive guide for those considering pursuing graduate degrees in clinical or counseling psychology. It is still the only in-depth and practical reference every student must have when considering attending graduate school in psychology. Institutions continue to evolve as the field does, so students planning to pursue graduate education need this guide to make the right graduate program decisions….Every undergraduate program should make this mandatory reading for their undergraduates and anyone considering graduate psychology education. I continue looking forward to reviewing each edition of this book and recommending it to my undergraduate students pursuing a psychology career. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn The Great Awakening: Defeating the Globalists and Launching the Next Great Renaissance, the most persecuted man on Earth, Alex Jones, gives you the good news about the failing plans of the globalists to control humanity. The expression “Get woke, go broke” has entered the common lexicon as we’ve seen company after company invoke the false gods of diversity, equity, and inclusion to their financial demise. But this surface discussion masks a much darker truth. What we are witnessing is nothing less than the failed plans of social Darwinists to capture free market capitalism and turn it toward their fascist aims of controlling and depopulating the globe. Working with New York Times bestselling author Kent Heckenlively, Jones masterfully gives you the deeper discussion about such hot button topics as the truth behind the globalists plans for artificial intelligence (AI), the central bank digital currency, social credit scores, Big Tech tyranny, censorship, fifteen-minute cities, the unholy alliance between big business and big government, the military-intelligence-industrial complex—which is hell-bent on eternal war—and the all-out assault on free speech and the Second Amendment. The good news is that these plans are destined to fail, if we wake up to the anti-human future the globalists have planned for us. The globalists hate freedom, and what they hate the most is the greatest freedom document in human history, the United States Constitution. Jones does not shy away from the darker parts of American history—the way we have been systematically deceived by the intelligence agencies since their assassination of President John F. Kennedy—but he provides example after example of people who have broken free from the matrix of lies to tell the truth. The people the globalists fear the most are the members of their own systems of control, who wake up and then decide to act against the machine. The globalists believe they’ve planned for every possible contingency, but they hadn’t counted on the conscience and love of truth, which lives in the souls of good people. St. Augustine once wrote: “The truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself.” No figure in our modern times has roared louder against the enemies of freedom than Alex Jones. In the calm and dispassionate style that made his first book, The Great Reset: And the War for the World, such a smash hit, Alex lays out the flaws in the plans of the globalists and how they seek to create a world in direct opposition to God’s plans for our glorious human future. But God consistently works His will in our world, even through imperfect individuals like Donald Trump, Alex Jones, or you. If you want to read one book this year to understand your world and help lead humanity to the next great human renaissance, you need to order this book today.Trade Review“Alex is right about far more than he is wrong about.... He’s the most misunderstood guy on the planet.”—JOE ROGAN “Alex Jones may be the most maligned patriot in the country, but virtually every threat to our liberty that he has predicted has come to pass.”—ROGER STONE "[Alex Jones'] reputation is amazing."—DONALD TRUMP

Book SynopsisIntegral Psychedelic Therapy is a groundbreaking, evidence-based collection that explores how psychedelic medicine can be incorporated into contemporary psychotherapy. This book builds on current psychedelic research by providing an in-depth articulation of the practice of psychedelic therapy, weaving together a variety of complementary therapeutic frameworks, case examples, and practical guidance for cultivating a highly effective, ethically grounded, integral approach. Chapters by a diverse set of practicing psychotherapists and leading researchers aim to provide practitioners with a method that centers liberation of all dimensions of being through intersectional, client-centered, trauma-informed, and attachment-focused practices, alongside thoughtful attunement to the relational, somatic, imaginal, cultural, and transpersonal dimensions of healing.Integral Psychedelic Therapy will be essential reading for psychotherapists in practice and in training as well as those Trade Review"The wild and wooly field of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is in need of expert guidance and this edited book offers a lot of it from a diverse group of experienced practitioners and researchers, who cover everything from the somatic to the spiritual and social activist sides of this important movement. I am honored that Bob Grant contributed a clear and practical chapter on integrating ketamine with my Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach. My personal and clinical experience with this combination has been amazing and Bob’s guidelines are extremely valuable. His personal journey is also inspiring." - Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D. developer of the Internal Family Systems model and adjunct faculty, Harvard Medical School."Integral Psychedelic Therapy is a cutting-edge exploration of psychedelic-assisted therapy by some of the top therapists and researchers in the field, providing an abundance of essential insights that are foundational to this work. This is a core text for practitioners looking to develop their skills as well as anyone interested in psychedelic healing." - Rick Doblin, PhD, Founder & Executive Director, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies"This is a multi-faceted gem of a book! Integral Psychedelic Therapy is practical, necessary reading for anyone looking to understand the psychedelic revolution underway in psychotherapy and psychiatry." - Julie Holland, MD "Psychedelics occasion a state of consciousness of immense therapeutic power and at the same time extraordinary vulnerability. Guidebooks are important, and this one, written by thoughtful and skillful practitioners, is a must-read for therapists who wish for these medicines to serve both personal healing and the greater good of society." - David E. Presti, University of California, Berkeley "Within this wondrously evolving field of psychedelic medicine, we are discovering that the therapeutic envelope is more important, and potentially more meaningful, than the molecule. This book provides an elegant compendium of innovations, and deepens our shared understanding of expanded states. For clinicians and explorers alike." - Brian Richards, Psy.D., Sunstone Therapies, The Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research"This timely collection, produced by clinicians and researchers at the forefront of the psychedelic movement, is a must-read for both newcomers and experts. It combines clinical inquiry and a humanistic approach, weaving in social justice and respect for Indigenous traditions. As regulation by the FDA, decriminalization, and mainstreaming advance globally, it’s urgent to cultivate a thoughtful understanding and culture around these powerful substances. This book goes beyond mere glorification, alarmist calls for "ethics" and "safety," or empty tokenization to dive deep into nuanced and complex discussions around psychedelic-assisted therapies." - Bia Labate, PhD, Executive Director, Chacruna Institute"The prevalence of mental health conditions and the speed at which psychedelics look set to be incorporated into mainstream medicine means there will need to be many more specially-trained therapists in the very near future. This will be a steep learning curve and we will need to carefully combine elements from conventional psychiatry with knowledge learned from Indigenous and underground practitioners. This book does just that - providing an excellent, multidisciplinary education covering the techniques used." - Amanda Feilding, Founder & Executive Director of the Beckley Foundation, Oxford, UK."This book is a treasure trove of ideas and practical tips, refreshingly and importantly foregrounded in acknowledgement of the debt owed to indigenous plant medicine using traditions, and the impact of colonization, patriarchy, white supremacy, and corporate greed on the trajectory of psychedelic healing traditions. The subsequent chapters offer many different types of gifts; particular key issues, such as consensual touch, are considered from different viewpoints, as well as so many other important topics for anyone working with these healing modalities. For those who feel familiar with the ‘basics’ of ‘prep-session-integration’, this book delves deeper into some of the complexities, mysteries, nuanced applications, and ethical questions. The chapter on ‘Decolonizing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy’ by Danielle Herrera, MFT was a wake up call for me, and is, I feel, a must-read for our community." - Rosalind Watts, PhD Founder and co-director of Acer Integration"Integral Psychedelic Therapy brings needed attention and wisdom to a range of the most important aspects of working with psychedelics. At a time of rapid progress in clinical research, this book is a welcome reminder of the cultural context surrounding these medicines, including the history of psychedelics, the debt owed to indigenous wisdom and the tragic damage the "War on Drugs" has done to marginalized communities and to the advancement of health care and individual freedom. The more clinically oriented chapters remind us not to lose sight of the "core, human elements of the work" and the richness and depth of the human healing process. The authors draw on their own clinical experience to offer informed and insightful discussions of ethics and consent, therapeutic relationship, safe and mindful physical touch, music, the multiplicity of the psyche, numinous mystical experience, psychedelic group therapy and the immense importance of integration following psychedelic experiences. Case examples bring these discussions to life. This is a valuable resource for therapists and anyone else interested in psychedelics." - Michael Mithoefer, MD, Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision, MAPS Public Benefit Corp. "This book arrives at a critical time in the evolution of psychedelic therapy as it articulates the challenges, mystery, and beauty of the psychedelic renaissance. The authors include diverse voices, each with their own sensitivities and refreshing perspectives, blending science, theory, ethics, and heart within broader societal forces. Being of service in partnership with compassion and ethical care are at the heart of each chapter. This book offers a wealth of information from practitioners with extensive clinical and research experience, that is fresh, relevant, and culturally responsive." - Marcela Ot’alora G. Until now.Painted People is a beguiling and intimate look at an untold history of humanity. The earliest tattoos yet identified belonged to Ötzi, the iceman', whose mummy allows us a brief glimpse into the prehistory of the practice. We know that over the more than five thousand years since he was tattooed, countless cultures have performed this ancient practice, and people in every corner of the world have been tattooed. For the most part, these fascinating histories remain stubbornly untold, and the secrets of Siberian princesses, Chinese generals and Victorian socialites have been hidden on the skin, under layers of clothing and under layers of history. It is a book that enthusiastically embraces a wide scholarship of ideas while communicating them with a lightness and whimsy that inspires you to take the needed journey that is intimated in its title. The future of math education lies in imagining classrooms that are not only equitable in their design, but also equitable in their implementation. The best mathematical experiences lie in wait with PBL. This book must be considered the gold standard for creating those student and teacher experiences. -- Sunil Singh * Pickering, ON, Canada *With compelling stories and practical strategies, McHugh gives us a vision of mathematics education that empowers all learners to experience engaging, effective, and meaningful learning. In the scenarios that McHugh brings to life, students use math to tackle projects that matter to them. When guided by teachers who know how to support each learner’s journey, these projects deepen students’ understanding of rigorous content. More importantly, students build their confidence to use math as a tool for asking questions, seeking answers, and making contributions. -- Suzie Boss * Portland, OR *I have not seen and cannot imagine a more comprehensive book about project- based learning and math than this one. It feels like the time has finally come for new approaches to teaching math, and McHugh provides a detailed yet readable road map, based on her own practice and drawing from many expert sources. I love how she includes so many classroom-tested examples, stories, and practical tools. Her depth of experience and compassion for students shines through! -- John Larmer * Mill Valley, CA *I couldn’t stop smiling while reading this book. McHugh shows how students can experience math in ways that not only are memorable and relatable, but spark curiosity as well. I cannot wait to implement what I’ve learned from this book into my teaching practice. -- Howie Hua * Fresno, CA *From start to finish, McHugh offers a unique glimpse into mathematics classrooms in which all students see themselves as mathematicians—a place in which they experience the joy, beauty, and wonder of mathematics. Her personal stories, abundance of examples and strategies, and clear guidance provide a detailed blueprint for the reimagined teaching and learning of mathematics. This book is a must-have for those who want to finally answer the question, "Why do I have to learn this?" -- Tammy Moynihan * Falls, WI *Most of my experiences as a math educator have been with problem-based learning, not project-based learning, because getting started felt daunting. This book helped me better understand the differences and gave an actionable plan to implement meaningful project-based lessons with students. Educators say we want students to be college and career ready, yet we’re using the same practices that we used decades ago. If you want your students to authentically use mathematics in their lives, this is the book for you. -- Robert Kaplinsky * Long Beach, CA *Through this book, McHugh makes project-based learning come to life in the mathematics classroom. The stories shared throughout the book from both students’ and teachers’ perspectives help us see ourselves in this important work and show the thought process in creating PBL mathematics experiences. The examples throughout help illustrate the key components in utilizing PBL to develop student understanding of mathematics. -- Kevin DykemaBringing Project-Based Learning to Life in Mathematics will support mathematics teachers with creating learning environments where students see mathematics as relevant to their lives and where students have opportunities to answer questions that matter to them. McHugh’s book provides practical strategies to enact this approach to mathematics teaching. -- Amanda Jansen * Newark, DE *This book can help teachers plan and implement authentic experiences for students. With project-based learning, students are less likely to say, "When am I going to use this?," and instead receive individualized mathematics learning opportunities that are relevant and meaningful. -- Christine Koerner * Norman, OK *In Bringing Project-Based Learning to Life in Mathematics, McHugh articulates how project-based learning can transform the learning experience for students and the teaching experience for educators. Working with students and teachers around the world, I see how PBL can be a tool to empower students to be thinkers and problem solvers. Reading this book, a teacher learns why and how to implement PBL in their classroom. -- Chadd W. McGlone * Chapel Hill, NC *Has project-based learning sounded overwhelming to you in the past? In Bringing Project-Based Learning to Life in Mathematics, McHugh does a masterful job of describing the PBL process and providing clear and simple entry points to PBL that connect to your current strengths as a mathematics teacher. This detailed guide will be a staple on your desk as it provides you with opportunities to deepen your PBL practice and give students more rigorous, productive, and equitable learning opportunities that strengthen their identities as doers of mathematics. -- Michael D. Steele * Milwaukee, WI *With Bringing Project-Based Learning to Life in Mathematics, McHugh has composed a valuable addition to the growing number of PBL books! Developing math projects isn′t always easy, but right out the gate, McHugh clarifies what it means to be a PBL mathematics educator by offering an honest reflection about her growth in space. The pages of this valuable book are laden with relatable stories and tangible tools and resources to take today′s math classrooms into the authenticity that PBL offers. -- Jorge Valenzuela * Richmond, VA *Table of ContentsIntroduction Section I. Book SynopsisPay attention. As politics slides toward impulsivity, and outrage bests rationality, how can philosophy help us critically engage with real world problems? Question everything. Drawing on decades of work in philosophy including a huge range of interviews with contemporary philosophers, Julian Baggini sets out how philosophical thought can promote incisive thinking. Introducing everyday examples and contemporary political concerns - from climate change to implicit bias - How to Think Like a Philosopher is a revelatory exploration of the techniques, methods and principles that guide philosophy, and how they can be applied to our own lives. Seek clarity, not certainty. Covering canonical philosophers and focal movements, as well as introducing new voices in contemporary philosophy, this is both a short history of philosophy and an accessible, practical guide to good thinking. Book Synopsis“A richly detailed and well-informed month-by-month accounting of all the major Polish customs and traditions practiced over the centuries. Ms. Knab stirs and reawakens our ancestral memory.” ―The Kosciuszko Foundation Newsletter Now in a paperback edition with illustrations, historical black and white photographs, and color photographs throughout the book! This unique, well-researched reference is arranged by month, showing the various occasions, feasts and holidays prominent in Polish culture―beginning with December it continues through Holy Week Customs, superstitions, beliefs and rituals associated with farming, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, midsummer, harvest festival, wedding rites, Name Days, birth and death. There is also a chapter on Polish pastimes and games for children. Many of the customs and traditions described in the book have been lost even in today''s modern Poland. World wars, massive immigration, the loss of the oral tradition, urbanization and politics have changed the face of a once agrarian people and their way of life throughout the calendar year. The changes, however, have not been able to erase the memory of that way of life completely. Many communities of the Polish diaspora throughout the world still feel connected to Poland and choose to reenact harvest celebrations, reminding themselves of their ancestors'' reverence for the grains and gifts of bread. The sharing of opłatek, the Christmas Eve wafer, and the words of love while doing so, continue to bind family and friends together.  Although the purpose and meaning may have been lost and forgotten, the oczepiny ceremony (the unveiling) is still the mainstay of almost every wedding where the bride declares Polish heritage.   This invaluable resource is perfect for anyone who claims Polish ancestry, diligently practicing that which they learned at their parents'' and grandparents'' knees. It is for families who wish to teach Polish heritage and customs to their children, and for anyone seeking to learn more about their Slavic roots.
