  • The Mystery of Doggerland: Atlantis in the North

Inner Traditions Bear and Company The Mystery of Doggerland: Atlantis in the North

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA scientific exploration of the advanced ancient civilization known as Doggerland or Fairland that disappeared 5,000 years ago. New marine archaeological evidence has revealed the remains of a large land mass to the north of Britain that hosted an advanced civilization 1,000 years before the recognized “first” civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, or India. Remembered in Celtic legends as Tu-lay, and referred to by geologists as Doggerland or Fairland, this civilization began at least as early as 4000 BC but was ultimately destroyed by rising sea levels, huge tsunamis, and a terrible viral epidemic released from melting permafrost during a cataclysmic period of global warming. Exploring the latest archaeological findings and recent scientific analysis of Doggerland’s underwater remains, Graham Phillips shows that this ancient culture had sophisticated technology and advanced medical knowledge. He looks at evidence detected with remote sensing and seismic profiling of many artificial structures, complex settlements, gigantic earthworks, epic monoliths, and huge stone circles dated to more than 5,500 years ago, preserved beneath the ground and on the ocean floor. He examines evidence of Doggerland’s high-temperature technology, showing how its people were able to melt solid rock to create vitrified structures far stronger than concrete, a technique that modern science cannot replicate. He looks at the small part of the Fairland land mass that still exists: Fair Isle, a tiny island some 45 miles north of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Phillips shows how, when Fairland sank beneath the waves around 3100 BC, its last survivors traveled by boat to settle in the British Isles, where they established the megalithic culture that built Stonehenge. Revealing the vast archaeological evidence in support of the existence of Doggerland, as well as its threads of influence in early cultures around the world, Phillips also shows how the fate of this sophisticated ancient culture is a warning from history: the cataclysmic events that happened to the first civilizations could happen again as the world heats up.Trade Review“Graham Phillips has made a powerful case for advanced prediluvian “Phillips’s thorough investigations of this fascinating topic reveal not only a prehistoric lost world that is today rewriting history but also the genesis point of the stone circle culture whose greatest achievement was Stonehenge. An important addition to the bookshelf of anyone into the mysteries of the megaliths.” * Andrew Collins, author of The First Female Pharaoh and Göbekli Tepe and coauthor of Denisovan O *“Graham Phillips has made a powerful case for advanced prediluvian civilization in Europe. In fact, the sunken kingdom of Doggerland, only recently discovered at the bottom of the North Sea, resembles in many ways the lost world called Atlantis by Plato. Phillips does a great job of showing the connections between the mythic megalithic culture we have dreamed about for many centuries and one we had long forgotten but which may be the true homeland of the British people. A wonderful and intriguing read.” * J. Douglas Kenyon, author of Ghosts of Atlantis: How the Echoes of Lost Civilizations Influence Our *“Graham Phillips’s well-researched, well-written book neatly places a number of missing pieces in the puzzle of the Orkney megalithic tradition and the broader ancient region of Doggerland. He presents these in context with a range of informative viewpoints on prediluvian cultures including Atlantis, Mu, and Lemuria.” * Laird Scranton, author of The Mystery of Skara Brae, Sacred Symbols of the Dogon, and Point of Origi *Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsGlobal Warning1 A Forgotten CivilizationPeople of the North Sea2 First Cities and the Legend of AtlantisPossible Locations and Catastrophes3 Lost ContinentsDebunking the Theories of Mu and Lemuria4 The Great FloodStories from Ancient Civilizations5 Melting Ice, Climate Change, and Pandemics Their Impacts on Urbian Populations around the World6 The Mysteries of the Megalithic Culture Postulating Its Origins7 Stone Circles, Earthworks, and Standing StonesCharacteristics of the Monuments of the British Isles8 Megalithic CivilizationOrcadian Innovation9 Geomancers and HealersPurpose of the Monuments10 FairlandEvidence of Civilization and MigrationNotes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisMyanmar's generals didn't expect the nation to rise up against the coup they staged in February 2021. But after decades of stifling, direct military rule, the Burmese people had become used to another way of life during the relative openness of 201121. The army has been unable to suppress anti-coup protests as it did in 1962 and 1988; and, three years after sending tanks into Yangon, Naypyitaw and other cities, the army has yet to establish a functioning administration. For the first time since the 1970s, armed resistance is not confined to traditionally strife-torn frontier areas, where ethnic insurgents like the Karen National Union and Kachin Independence Army have been active for decadesit has spread to the majority-Burmese heartland, in the shape of the People's Defence Forces. But the anti-junta forces are insufficiently well-equipped to defeat the much more heavily armed Myanmar army, which itself is stretched too thin, on several fronts, to crush the resista

Book SynopsisWhile the undisputed heyday of folk horror was Britain in the 1960s and 1970s, the genre has not only a rich cinematic and literary prehistory, but directors and novelists around the world have also been reinventing folk horror for the contemporary moment. This study sets out to rethink the assumptions that have guided critical writing on the genre in the face of such expansions, with chapters exploring a range of subjects from the fiction of E. F. Benson to Scooby-Doo, video games, and community engagement with the Lancashire witches. In looking beyond Britain, the essays collected here extend folk horror’s geographic terrain to map new conceptualisations of the genre now seen emerging from Italy, Ukraine, Thailand, Mexico and the Appalachian region of the US.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Dawn Keetley and Ruth Heholt Part One: Folk Horror’s Folklore Chapter One: The Frightening Folk: An Introduction to the Folkloresque in Horror Jeffrey A. As well as talking through the history, Shehadeh is reaching out to Israelis and searching for some kind of dialogue' Armando Iannucci When the state of Israel was formed in 1948, it precipitated the Nakba or 'disaster': the displacement of the Palestine nation, creating fracture-lines which continue to erupt in violent and tragic ways today. In the years that followed, while the Berlin Wall crumbled and South Africa abolished apartheid, the Israeli government rejected every opportunity for reconciliation with Palestine. But Raja Shehadeh, a human rights lawyer and Palestine's greatest living writer, suggests that this does not mean the two nations cannot work together as partners on the road to peace, not genocide. In graceful, devastatingly observed prose, this is a fresh perspective in a time of great need.'Powerful' New Statesman'A

With an introduction by ‘risen star of the international poetry world’ Valzhyna Mort.Trade ReviewMaxim Znak's message is that wry humour and humanity trump the cruel absurdities of the regime [...] These stories, one hundred of them, none longer than three pages, have echoes of early Chekhov, Zoshchenko and Samuel Beckett and, ultimately, of Giovanni Boccaccio and Vernon Kress, who used the punning title for his 1991 novel of the Gulag. - Michael Purs The fact that this book exists at all should be a miracle. Book SynopsisEvery year in England and Wales alone, one in twenty adults suffer domestic abuse, two thirds of them women. Every week, two men kill a woman they were intimate with. And still we ask the wrong question: Why didn't she leave? Instead, we should ask: Why did he do it? Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators -- and the systems that enable them -- in the spotlight. Her radical reframing of domestic abuse takes us beyond the home to explore how power, culture and gender intersect to both produce and normalise abuse. She boldly confronts uncomfortable questions about how and why society creates abusers, but can't seem to protect their victims, and shows how we can end this dark cycle of fear and control. 'See What You Made Me Do' is a profound and bold confrontation of this urgent crisis and its deep roots. It will challenge everything you thought you knew about domestic abuse.Trade Review'A shattering book: clear-headed and meticulous, driving always at the truth' -- Helen Garner'[Offers] a clinical view on why domestic abuse happens, why it's so prevalent across the world and what the psychology is behind it.' -- Joanne Froggatt, Harper’s Bazaar UK'A much-needed, thought-provoking exploration of how victims can be blamed or disbelieved, and their experiences dismissed, whilst their abusers are often excused. Book SynopsisAn in-depth assessment of innovations in military information technology informs hypothetical outcomes for artificial intelligence adaptations In the coming decades, artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the way humans wage war. The military organizations that best innovate and adapt to this AI revolution will likely gain significant advantages over their rivals. To this end, great powers such as the United States, China, and Russia are already investing in novel sensing, reasoning, and learning technologies that will alter how militaries plan and fight. The resulting transformation could fundamentally change the character of war. In Information in War, Benjamin Jensen, Christopher Whyte, and Scott Cuomo provide a deeper understanding of the AI revolution by exploring the relationship between information, organizational dynamics, and military power. The authors analyze how militaries adjust to new information communication technology historically to identify opportunities, risks, and obstacles that will almost certainly confront modern defense organizations as they pursue AI pathways to the future. Information in War builds on these historical cases to frame four alternative future scenarios exploring what the AI revolution could look like in the US military by 2040.Trade ReviewJensen, Whyte, and Cuomo’s thought-provoking book is less about the promise of the military uses of AI and more about why that promise may not be realized. * Foreign Affairs *The authors, coming from different institutional backgrounds, have written a short book that is more than the sum of its parts. * Choice *Table of ContentsList of IllustrationsPreface1. For the first time ever, they are being accepted by audiences and even showered with industry awards. We are finally accepting that women are-gasp-fully fledged human beings. How did we get to this point?Unlikeable Female Characters traces the evolution of highly memorable female characters, from Samantha Jones as "The Slut" in Sex and the City to the iconic Mean Girl, Regina George, examining what exactly makes them popular, how audiences have reacted to them, and the ways in which pop culture is finally allowing us to celebrate the complexities of being a woman. Book SynopsisDo you think that Jesus only surrounded himself with men? Think again. Inspired by their popular Channel 4 documentary Jesus' Female Disciples, historians Helen Bond and Joan Taylor explore the way in which Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mary, Martha and a whole host of other women - named and unnamed - have been remembered by posterity, noting how many were silenced, tamed or slurred by innuendo - though occasionally they get to slay dragons. Women Remembered looks at the representation of these women in art, and the way they have been remembered in inscriptions and archaeology. And of course they dig into the biblical texts, exposing misogyny and offering alternative and unexpected ways of appreciating these women as disciples, apostles, teachers, messengers and church-founders. At a time when both the church and society more widely are still grappling with the full inclusion and equality of women, this is a must-read for anyone interested in the historical and cultural origins of Christianity.Trade ReviewDrawing on fifty years of feminist scholarship, they now expand the story to include most of the women mentioned in Christian scripture. Importantly, they show that the movement that came to be called Christianity was fluid and unstable for its first three centuries, attracting a diversity of women whose leadership was excluded as roles became formalized. * Times Literary Supplement *Having excavated biblical texts, they expose deep-rooted misogyny and offer alternative accounts of women as apostles, teachers, messengers, and church founders. * Irish Examiner *The authors piece together the evidence that has survived about the named and unnamed women. Of course we know that in our heart of hearts, for we can see in our churches every week from the role of parish administrator down to altar girls ...This is a continually interesting book, full of (to me) new information.' * Irish Catholic *Another argument made to good effect by the likeable authors, in this accessible and pleasurable addition to the largely impenetrable academic literature on the subject, is that the gospels as they appear in our Bibles were subject to heavy tweaking and editing over the century or two after they were written until a definitive version was agreed * The Daily Telegraph *there is plenty of evidence that women were not only involved in Jesus' movement, but were integral to it. * All About History Magazine *It's empowering, inspiring and important to learn about the key roles women played in early Christianity, which sadly almost disappeared from historical records, as men took control of the church. * Cat Lewis, Executive Producer, Songs of Praise *This book nowhere seems to step beyond the limits of what can be demonstrated by actual history and real evidence.. a book which can be read with the hope of learning what is really thought today by the vanguard of scholarship... a continually interesting book. * The Irish Catholic *As Joan Taylor and Helen Bond explore in their new book, Women Remembered: Jesus' Female Disciples, there is plenty of evidence that women were not only involved in Jesus' movement, but were integral to it. * All About History *The authors piece together the evidence that has survived about the named and unnamed women. Book Synopsis'A thoughtful exploration of humanity ... Fabes is great company and makes riding bicycles seem like the best way to see and understand the world' - Guardian They say that being a good doctor boils down to just four things: Shut up, listen, know something, care. The same could be said for life on the road, too. When Stephen Fabes left his job as a junior doctor and set out to cycle around the world, frontline medicine quickly faded from his mind. Of more pressing concern were the daily challenges of life as an unfit rider on an overloaded bike, helplessly in thrall to pastries. But leaving medicine behind is not as easy as it seems. As he roves continents, he finds people whose health has suffered through exile, stigma or circumstance, and others, whose lives have been saved through kindness and community. After encountering a frozen body of a monk in the Himalayas, he is drawn ever more to healthcare at the margins of the world, to crumbling sanitoriums and refugee camps, to city dumps and war-torn hospital wards. And as he learns the value of listening to lives - not just solving diagnostic puzzles - Stephen challenges us to see care for the sick as a duty born of our humanity, and our compassion.Trade Reviewa thoughtful exploration of humanity ... Fabes has redefined the medical memoir. -- Nathan FilerA clever and entertaining book, never veering too far from either the practicalities of bike-touring or Fabes's work as a medic and often using metaphors that connect the two * TLS *A charming, human story of resilience, adversity and compassion, all told with a good dose of dry British humour -- Lois Pryce author of * Revolutionary Ride *'I absolutely loved this book - a six-year, wheel-spinning, page-turning pedal around the world. Book Synopsis''This book is Masterful, Evidence-based, Memorable, Operational, Readable, and the best book for You on memory.'' Professor John HattieTeacher Toolkit Guides transform the theory of education into practical ideas for your classroom. From Ross Morrison McGill, bestselling author of Mark. Plan. Teach. 2.0, this book unpicks the research behind how learners retain and recall information. It provides evidence-based strategies for improving memory in the classroom. Cleverly designed with infographics, charts and diagrams, The Teacher Toolkit Guide to Memory provides clear, visual explanations of how memory works, including short-term and long-term memory, working memory, semantic memory and episodic memory. Ross presents a wealth of original ideas for incorporating this theory into day-to-day classroom practice, with proven methods for aiding knowledge retention and testing recall, to boost learning,Trade ReviewI have been on the lookout for a really good guide to memory that is easy to read and is related to education and teaching. At last, this publication from Ross Morrison McGill fits the bill. He has put everything he has learned on his own learning journey into a beginners guide for teachers. * Dyslexia Review *An exceptional effort of presenting the vast and difficult topic of 'the learning brain' in a practical and understandable way. -- Yves Moerskofski * Educational psychologist *We are constrained by our memory skills, especially for students sitting in a class bombarded by facts pressured by an upcoming test, struggling to find relations between ideas and building coat hangers to remember the details, and surrounded by others who seem to find it easy to recall what the teacher said. This book is Masterful, Evidence-based, Memorable, Operational, Readable, and the best book for You on memory. -- Professor John Hattie * Melbourne Graduate School of Education *This book is informative and accessible for quick reads. The consistent approach to each chapter works really well, especially for utilising the practical applications. The embedded use of diagrams adds to the reader's understanding of some complex concepts. -- Charlotte McLean * SENCO and Senior Leader *An impressive collection of findings that draws on the latest research within cognitive science and education. Ross succinctly discusses, clarifies and offers practical, research-informed examples for busy leaders and teachers. -- Mark Leswell * Research lead *The ‘human teacher first’ meets the science. A clear and practical guide to ‘debunking’ teaching practices, with excellent use of analogies and ideas to support teacher development. -- Samantha Torr * Vice Principal: Director of Alpha Teaching School Hub, @alpha_tsh *This brilliant book is concise and informative with visual explanations and summaries for quick reference, plus useful examples and templates. It outlines the complex connection between cognition, memory and emotion in learning. -- Sarah Hopp * Head of additional learning support and inclusion, @sarahhopp143 *A fantastic book that successfully interweaves the breadth of cognitive theory and practical strategies in a clear and accessible way. A great book to begin understanding the science of learning and the complexity of influences on this. -- Sarah Benskin * Assistant Principal (T & L, Curriculum and CPD), Nottingham @drblearning *Being research-informed is one thing; having time to do it is another. Solve both issues by reading and acting upon this excellent introductory guide to the theory and practice of memory. Highly recommended. -- Dr Paul S. Ganderton * Education consultant, @ecogeog *Ross McGill has managed to beautifully execute and simply explain the fundamentals of cognitive learning and the importance of understanding the “how” in the context of the brain, complete with wonderful illustrations perfect for the classroom teacher, learner and parent. So no matter who you are, no matter how successful, no matter how much you already may understand about this topic, Ross has something to offer you. -- Victoria dos Santos * Assistant athletic director and pastoral lead *This book covers all the key points in understanding how human memory forms and functions according to models of memory and neuroscience through a historical and contemporary approach that can enable educators to adapt their teaching in light of evidence. Some key points have been made about emotion and stress, which affect learning and memory, and being aware of these can facilitate effective teaching methods in the current climate – as it requires students to become active learners and be able to actively retrieve memories. This is crucial for today’s heavy content-based exams and curriculum. -- Shafina Vohra * Psychology teacher, @ShafinaVohra *A guide to memory highlights the importance of understanding how our students learn. The worked examples and the templates will help teachers bring these ideas into the classrooms of all settings! -- Ryan Curran * Vice principal Delta Independent School *The book is excellent and gripping and thoroughly fascinating. The theory sections are very well written and work well as a quick read as well as being very well suited to a slower careful read. The practical sections are remarkably clear and helpful. I defy anyone to read this and not be forced to stop and reflect, and as a result their lessons can't fail to be improved. This is the first book I've read for a long time that has really grabbed me and forced me to reflect and to be challenged. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. -- Peter Hall, Assistant Headteacher * @maths_ast *

Book SynopsisThe US Constitution says nothing about a presidential cabinet, yet this institution has grown powerful. Lindsay M. Chervinsky tells the story of George Washington’s cabinet, an ad hoc panel that responded to emergencies of the day. It is supposed to be the Senate’s job to advise the president, but the first cabinet changed that expectation forever.Trade ReviewCogent, lucid, and concise, Lindsay Chervinsky’s book gives us an indispensable guide to the creation of the cabinet. With her groundbreaking study, we can now have a much greater appreciation of this essential American institution, one of the major legacies of George Washington’s enlightened statecraft. -- Ron Chernow, author of Washington: A LifeTracks the emergence of a body that the Constitution never mentions…Argues persuasively that focusing on its development helps us understand pivotal moments in the 1790s and the creation of an independent, effective executive. -- William Anthony Hay * Wall Street Journal *Fantastic…My admiration for America’s first and possibly finest president has grown further…Washington excelled more than many of his successors at harnessing the cabinet to exercise his political will…A compelling story. -- Clayton Trutor * New Criterion *A thorough and insightful account of how the federal government came to have a ‘cabinet’ resembling the British one. But it doubles as a poignant tale of how Washington’s unifying authority broke down over his time in office. -- Tom Cutterham * Early American Literature *Well-researched, thoughtful, and fascinating…Between 1789 and 1797, George Washington formulated the standards against which all subsequent presidents must be measured. -- Clay S. Jenkinson * Governing.com *A well written, deeply insightful examination of Washington’s presidency and his personal leadership style. -- Alec D. Rogers * Journal of the American Revolution *With smart analysis and lively writing, Chervinsky illuminates how Washington and his secretaries breathed life into an institution never directly mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. -- Tyson Reeder * Parliaments, Estates, and Representation *Traces the evolution of the cabinet from British history through George Washington’s presidency, explaining how experimentation, personalities, internal and international crises, loyalty and betrayal, and political partisanship impacted not only the development of Washington’s advisory body, but foreign and domestic policies as well. * Library Journal *In this important and illuminating study, Lindsay Chervinsky has given us an original angle of vision on the foundations and development of something we all take for granted: the president’s Cabinet. -- Jon Meacham, author of The Soul of AmericaA clear, concise, and lively study of a topic that has long needed such coverage. Chervinsky skillfully shows the Revolutionary roots of the early cabinet and explores how it juggled precedent, public opinion, partisanship, and the balance of power. Anyone interested in American politics will want to read this informative and timely book. -- Joanne B. Freeman, author of The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil WarChervinsky offers a new perspective on a crucial and enduring institution in American politics, persuasively showing the centrality of the cabinet in the founding era and beyond. With clear, crisp prose and a compelling story, this book is a must-read not only for historians, political scientists, and legal scholars, but also for anyone interested in learning about a foundation of the American republic. -- Gautham Rao, author of National Duties: Custom Houses and the Making of the American StateA riveting, beautifully written story of George Washington’s efforts to figure out how to achieve his goals in a fast-changing environment. By placing Washington’s cabinet meetings within the broader narratives of the Revolutionary War and the politics of the early republic, Chervinsky brings all the tensions of the big stories into Washington’s efforts to administer America’s new government. She makes reading about the evolution of institutions fun! -- Johann N. Neem, author of Democracy’s Schools: The Rise of Public Education in AmericaA well-written and much-needed addition to our understanding of the early American Republic. -- Kathryn Gehred * H-Net Reviews *Provides the reader with the first modern treatment of the Cabinet in decades. Today social stigma shames those seen as ''abnormal'' in more insidious ways. Erving Goffman''s defining sociological study draws extensively on the lived experiences of those who have found themselves on the edges of society to look at the complex ways in which stigmatized individuals see and project themselves, the strategies they use to deal with rejection, and how stigma can shatter their relationships with others.''His brilliant book'' Guardian
