Book SynopsisIn what ways is climate change political? This book addresses this key - but oddly neglected - question. It argues that in order to answer it we need to understand politics in a three-fold way: as a site of authoritative, public decision-making; as a question of power; and as a conflictual phenomenon. Recurring themes center on de- and re-politicization, and a tension between attempts to simplify climate change to a single problem and its intrinsic complexity. These dynamics are driven by processes of capital accumulation and their associated subjectivities. The book explores these arguments through an analysis of a specific city - Ottawa - which acts as a microcosm of these broader processes. It provides detailed analyses of conflicts over urban planning, transport, and attempts by city government and other institutions to address climate change. The book will be valuable for students and researches looking at the politics of climate change.Table of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Making Climate Policy In The City Of Ottawa; 3. • Cambridge University Press A Democratic Bearing

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this rich analysis of the changing ideals of citizenship, Stephen K. White offers a path for the renewal of democratic life in the twenty-first century. Looking beyond passive notions of citizenship defined in terms of voting or passport possession, White seeks a more aspirational portrait, both participatory and inclusive, that challenges citizens, especially in the middle class, to confront power structures to achieve greater justice. Using the Tea Party and followers of Donald Trump as foils, he shows how these groups'' resentful and exclusivist conceptions of active citizenship undermine democratic aspirations. White explores how such deleterious influence might be effectively engaged by a robust counter-conception on the democratic left. The book makes this aspirational ideal conceptually clear, normatively compelling and aesthetically attractive.Trade Review'The volume requires an extensive understanding of political theory but is a rewarding read.' • Cambridge University Press The Common Law Inside the Female Body

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn The Common Law Inside the Female Body, Anita Bernstein explains why lawyers seeking gender progress from primary legal materials should start with the common law. Despite its reputation for supporting conservatism and inequality, today''s common law shares important commitments with feminism, namely in precepts and doctrines that strengthen the freedom of individuals and from there the struggle against the subjugation of women. By re-invigorating both the common law - with a focus on crimes, contracts, torts, and property - and feminist jurisprudence, this highly original work anticipates a vital future for a pair of venerable jurisprudential traditions. It should be read by anyone interested in understanding how the common law delivers an extraordinary degree of liberty and security to all persons - women included.Trade Review'This amazingly comprehensive study of the core ideas and principles underlying the common law leads to some surprising and provocative conclusions. Bernstein makes a compelling argument that, read correctly, the common law clearly provides women the right to say 'no' to unwanted sex and unwanted pregnancy. Erudite and fascinating, steeped in legal history and philosophy and peppered with interesting statistics about injury, social practices, and everything else under the sun, Bernstein's work breathes new life into old legal doctrines with imagination, wit and a love of the law.' Martha Chamallas, Robert J. Lynn Chair in Law, Ohio State University'This provocative, controversial book makes the startling claim that the common law can be a useful tool for feminist lawyers. In this carefully and powerfully argued book, Bernstein challenges the assumption that common law reasoning and feminist analysis are at loggerheads. This important argument provides new legal tools for feminist scholars.' Jonathan Herring, Vice Dean of the University of Oxford'In this book, Bernstein offers an exciting and audacious reconstructive account: the applicability to women of the common law's commitment to negative liberty. Punchy, delightfully provocative and erudite, this book is a must read to conservatives, progressivists, jurists and feminists, who, like the book's main motto, can all share the bounty of The Common Law Inside the Female Body.' Tsachi Keren-Paz, Sheffield University'In this groundbreaking book, Anita Bernstein beautifully demonstrates that our understanding of the common law as benefiting men and harming women is deeply flawed. By revealing how the common law is a source of women's power and freedom, she invigorates feminist arguments with creativity and possibilities. This powerful book is a much-needed addition to the gender justice scholarship and first-year law school curriculum.' Solangel Maldonado, Eleanor Bontecou Professor of Law, Seton Hall University, New Jersey'In this ambitious and engaging effort to advance feminist legal scholarship through a radical reinterpretation of the common law tradition, Bernstein builds from the principle that the common law exists primarily to secure individuals the negative liberty to 'say no to what they do not want. … legal scholars will find much to admire, debate, and discuss in its pages.' D. P. Ramsey, Choice'The Common Law Inside the Female Body is a highly original work that anticipates a vital future for a pair of venerable jurisprudential traditions.' James A. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC States Versus Markets

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNow in its fourth edition, this highly regarded and critically acclaimed textbook offers an authoritative introduction to international political economy. It is unique in offering an accessible, broad introduction to the development of the global economy from its inception to today's complex relationship between states and markets in the midst of economic crises. Herman Mark Schwartz deftly shows that globalization is not a novel phenomenon but a recurrent process whereby markets have, since the 16th century, periodically redistributed economic activity. It links the production of goods and services in one region to the markets for those goods, and shows how this can lead to conflicts among states that try to create, enhance or subdue the markets. Taking into account the continued rise of China, and the recent shift towards populism in the West, this book has been extensively rewritten and updated throughout. This is a thought-provoking text which will encourage upper level undergrTrade ReviewThis edition improves on an already outstanding text. What Schwartz does here is highly unusual and highly rewarding: he draws students into an adventure in learning that conveys knowledge about both the origins and evolution of a global political economy and the development of IPE as a branch of learning. And he brings it up to-date in a manner that places students at the center of important contemporary debates. If students have a choice of textbooks, this is the one. * Randall D. Germain, Carleton University, Canada *States Versus Markets has long been essential reading for those who seek to understand globalization and its periodic struggles with global imbalances and financial volatility. Professor Schwartz has now done it for the third time, and in keeping with his record this new third edition is yet better and richer than earlier excellence. Unlike more simplistic accounts, this highly approachable work offers a clear understanding of how and where 'globalization' came from and what it actually means for contemporary societies, gently debunking well-worn myths along the way. It is not only an impressive work of scholarship but also a pleasure to read, culminating in a dramatic account of financial crisis and the future of the global political economy. * Geoffrey R.D. Underhill, University of Amsterdam *This is the outstanding textbook in the field. It brilliantly combines conceptual rigour, historical depth, and empirical breadth within a powerful framing of how overlapping forms of state and market power have shaped the politics of globalization. I can think of no better introduction to political economy. * Jeremy Green, University of Cambridge, UK *Like a fine wine, this book is getting ever better with age. Every previous edition of States Versus Markets has excelled in communicating what the world looked like at that particular time. The new edition works exceptionally well in doing exactly the same for a world undergoing incredibly large political change. * Matthew Watson, University of Warwick, UK *There is no better advanced introduction to the politics of the global economy than States Versus Markets. Conceptually sophisticated but accessible, the book achieves a rare balance between depth and breadth. * Liam Stanley, University of Sheffield, UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction PART I: STATES, AGRICULTURE, AND GLOBALIZATION Chapter 1. • Unsettling the World

Rowman & Littlefield Unsettling the World

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first book-length treatment of Edward Said’s influential cultural criticism from the perspective of a political theorist. Morefield argues that Said’s critique provides a timely approach that bridges historical analyses of imperialism and postcolonial politics with an urgent imperative to theorize contemporary global crises.Table of ContentsChapter One will introduce Said to a political theory audience who might not be intimately familiar with his work by examining his incalculable impact on postcolonial scholarship. Despite his looming presence in other disciplines, Said’s writing have been largely ignored by political theorists because they don’t fall neatly into the categories of either critical or normative theory. The chapter critiques the way international ethicists de-historicize institutions of international politics and the privileged position by which Western experts are able to diagnose and “solve” the problems of the formerly colonized world. Chapter Two will begin the process of formulating a Saidian response to this form of liberal presentism by looking closely at the promises and challenges of Said’s humanism. The chapter will first interrogate the tension between his support for universal ideas like justice and freedom (most apparent in his refusal to dismiss human rights as “cultural or grammatical things”) and his equally deep commitment to Foucaultian discourse analysis. This combination of worldliness and the provisional, disputable, arguable products of human inquiry compelled Said to situate “critique at the very heart of humanism.” Chapter Three will explore the relationship between a humanism that is explicitly historical, critical and global and Said’s conception of the exilic intellectual. The chapter begins with a brief examination of the role of “exile” in twentieth century political theory more generally. It moves on to examine Said’s conviction that humanist intellectuals engaged in critique must understand themselves as already contaminated by “power, positions, and interests,” a disposition which elicits an ongoing processes of self-reflection that asks the critic to pay close attention to their own subject position vis-à-visthe event/text they are analyzing. Said championed a subject position for the critic rooted in exile. “The intellectual,” he argued, “who considers him or herself to be part of a more general condition affecting the displaced national community is… likely to be a source not of acculturation and adjustment, but rather of volatility and instability.” The chapter will conclude by thinking critically about some of the conceptual problems generated by this approach to exile, such as, the fact that it appears profoundly voluntarist in a way that seems to run counter to Said’s own theory of power. Despite these tensions, the kinds of reflective practices that flow from a position of exile offer a necessary corrective to the unquestioned positionality of liberal internationalism.Chapter Four will explore the kinds of political reflection enabled by exile, focusing on Said’s analysis of language and the way this fine-grained approach to language functions in his explicitly political writings. It will begin with an investigation of Said’s conviction that the self-reflective awareness of the exilic critic entails “a lifelong attentiveness to the words and rhetorics by which language is used by human beings who exist in history,” a disposition he called philological. The chapter will then turn to Said’s political writings to explore this attentiveness to the kinds of communities both engendered and occluded by pro-nouns. Chapter Five will explore the unsettled approach to crisis implicit in Said’s two-pronged approach his exilic humanism. On the one hand, the practice of humanist criticism compels the exilic intellectual to approach perceived crises in international politics from the perspective of language critique, drilling into the space between words to reveal the holes where narrating subjects should be, subjects who – despite their rhetorical invisibility – still daily experience the material violence of a world which refuses to represent them or create the space for them to represent themselves. On the other hand, Said’s critical humanism insists that we engage the kinds of historical analyses that “protect against and forestall the disappearance of the past” which have fallen victim to the discursive press of crisis.[1]Chapter Six draws together the threads of discussion by thinking more broadly about the adequacy of Said’s theory as a counterweight to the international ethics of liberal internationalism. This will include thinking explicitly about those aspects of Said’s work that might frustrate some political theorists: his insistence, for instance, on conceptualizing democracy as a form of critical practice rather than as a type of politics, and his refusal to theorize the foundational logic behind concepts that he values like “justice” and “human rights.” The book concludes by suggesting that it is precisely Said’s relentlessly critical insistence on searching for the hidden “we” behind discourses of democracy, justice, and human rights that makes his humanism particularly able to puncture the presentist logic behind so many contemporary approaches to international politics, thus bringing the past that cannot be acknowledged, and the collective subjects who cannot be represented, back into the center of analysis. Book SynopsisMajora Carter shows how brain drain cripples low-status communities and maps out a development strategy focused on talent retention to help them break out of economic stagnation. "My musical, In the Heights, explores issues of community, gentrification, identity and home, and the question: Are happy endings only ones that involve getting out of your neighborhood to achieve your dreams? In her refreshing new book, Majora Carter writes about these issues with great insight and clarity, asking us to re-examine our notions of what community development is and how we invest in the futures of our hometowns. This is an exciting conversation worth joining.? ?Lin-Manuel MirandaHow can we solve the problem of persistent poverty in low-status communities?Majora Carter argues that these areas need a talent-retention strategy, just like the ones companies have. Retaining homegrown talent is a critical part of creating a strong local economy that can resist gentrification. But too many people born in low-status communities measure their success by how far away from them they can get.Carter, who could have been one of them, returned to the South Bronx and devised a development strategy rooted in the conviction that these communities have the resources within themselves to succeed. She advocates measures such asBuilding mixed-income instead of exclusively low-income housing to create a diverse and robust economic ecosystemShowing homeowners how to maximize the long-term value of their property so they won?t succumb to quick-cash offers from speculatorsKeeping people and dollars in the community by developing vibrant ?third spaces??restaurants, bookstores, and places like Carter?s own Boogie Down Grind CafeThis is a profoundly personal book. Carter writes about her brother?s murder, how turning a local dumping ground into an award-winning park opened her eyes to the hidden potential in her community, her struggles as a woman of color confronting the ?male and pale? real estate and nonprofit establishments, and much more. It is a powerful rethinking of poverty, economic development, and the meaning of success.

Book SynopsisIn Europe, where the financial crisis was transformed into national debt crises in several countries, the current phase of the denial cycle marked by an official policy approach predicated on the assumption that normal restored through a mix of austerity, privatisation and less state involvement came through (anti-Keynes). The other view is this. Governmental investments and financial decision-making to regulate the effective demand in national economies is based on the basic principles introduced by John Maynard Keynes in his General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936), The solution of the temporary crisis of the democratic capitalism might be linked to Keynes by his successors the neo-Keynesians. However, the representative democracy has become weak and fragmented, and under control of international powerful multinationals. The citizens not any longer look upon their national government as their representatives but as representatives for interest of foreign states and international organisations. Poor public politics and policies are what come out of it. The first chapter examines the European Union''s capitalism in crisis. The second chapter of this book presents the weakness of the EU lying in its own foundation principals; its developments and its incapacity for transforming from a successful internal peace system into a reliable world power. The third chapter analyses the case-law of the EU on measures to fight online piracy so as to shed light on whether the Court of Justice of the European Union struck a fair balance between intellectual property and human rights. Also, the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights is examined. The last chapter analyses Spains internal conflict over the breakaway intentions of a part of Catalonian society, going through different influential aspects such as history, ethnicity, language and culture; economy, the structure of the Spanish central government, the role of European Union and several other milestones in the main claims of the supporters of the independence for Catalonia.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Disciplines of the City: New Forms of Governance

Book SynopsisDuring the past two decades, cities have become nerve centers for the production of value. Connected in real time by means of a vast infrastructure network, their productive dynamic has surpassed the organizational and management capabilities of territorially limited States, which are dependent on the international financial flow of capital moving across them. Given that cities are truly the biopolitical factories of the 21st century, the job functions of an urban planner are now identified with those of a highly placed manager in charge of a companys R+D+i, and the mode of governance applied to these is different from that used during previous, historic stages. From different viewpoints (Philosophy, Law, Architecture, and Engineering), this book offers an analysis of the main changes which have taken place in the way cities function. Among other issues, it looks at the management styles applied by public administrations to public spaces (David Thunder; Jorge León, Enrique Cano, and José María Castejón), and the new manner in which social (Julia Urabayen) and legal public (Adriana Ruiz and Alejandro Gómez) and private (Felipe Schwember) segregation is generated. It also looks at the new sociopolitical uses that city inhabitants have given to common spaces beyond the dichotomy of private and public space (Jonas Holst; Carlos Cámara). In other words, the chapters included in this book are not an historical approach to the city, but a theoretical reflection on the disciplines that define our post-metropolitan cities. The aim of the book is to understand how cities and the disciplines that are used to make them work function nowadays: governance, politics, and technology. The cities of the 21st century are no longer places where people can live freely (as Weber stated in The City), but spaces divided in at least two different areas: those who have access to ICT and those who do not have that technology, those who live in healthy and safe boroughs, and those who live in poor und unhealthy areas. This book ponders those problems and tries to show how the disciplinarians of the city deal with them.

Book SynopsisThis interdisciplinary text takes into account the impact of the Cold War on various locales, groups, societies, organizations, and technology. Included in this work are chapters on education, political groups, cultural challenges and rivalries, nuclear technology and weaponry, the impact of nuclear exposure, and the new global order in a post-nuclear age. Edited by an historian, each chapter is written from multiple disciplinary perspectives - - political science, history, social science, science, and medicine - - making this work exceptionally unique with broad sweeping conceptual frameworks, methods, and points of analysis, all the while focused upon a four- decade era of fear. The work of Stivachtis and Manning offer an engaging look into the organization of the international community, world affairs, and inter-cultural challenges during the Cold War to understand the impact on global society through the lens of the English School of International Relations. Cimbala's chapter delves into the challenges to controlling and understanding nuclear warfare throughout the Cold War and how the knowledge of control or preventing catastrophic nuclear war in the historic period is significantly different from the current nuclear age, from the perspectives of what nations have weapons, of what magnitude, and the potential for warfare. The impact of nuclear exposure well after the Cold War is examined in Osono's work, which analyzes the physiological and neurological impact of nuclear waste on workers in China who unknowingly unearthed barrels of nuclear waste. Nekola offers readers a view into the role of the exiled Czech political parties that operated in outside of the regulations of the Iron Curtain, after the 1948 Communist Coup, maintaining party publications and organization throughout the 1950s. The work of Bar-Noi analyzes the relationship between the Israeli and Soviet governments as the nation of Israel was founded and ultimately placed in the political cross-hairs of world leaders from 1945 to 1967. Palmadessa's works on U.S. education - - k-12 compulsory and higher education - - considers the ways in which education responded to the call for patriotic support of the U.S. in opposition to the communist regime in Russia and the understanding of the global role education was to play. The Cold War shook the world, its institutions, cultural groups, and scientific communities to their core. The Cold War: Global Impacts and Lessons Learned offers readers insight into the immediate challenges, the continued obstacles, and the knowledge gained from this tumultuous period riddled with fear that dominates the narrative of 20th century world history.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/coldwarglobalimpactandlessonslearned/

  • Modernity, Modernization, and Globalization:

Nova Science Publishers Inc Modernity, Modernization, and Globalization:

Book SynopsisThis book has examined some of the pressing issues and challenges related to modernity, modernisation, and globalisation of the 21st century. The authors of this book are a distinguished group of social scientists from America's academia, many of whom are by-cultural and educationally trained both in the East and the West. The book has used historical and comparative perspectives and many extant sources of primary data. The authors have addressed many macro-issues such as modernity and church-state separation, America's historical role in spreading global modernity, the global expansion of democracy, the rise of a global middle class, the advent of global digital connectivity, and the recent rise of right-wing political parties in the global political landscape. The authors also examined many micro-issues such as modernization and women empowerment in India and Nigeria, the growth of a unique political culture of Islam and modernism in Sierra Leone, the problem of transition to emancipative values in the post-socialist countries of Central and Easter Europe, rise in religious hostilities in South Asia, need for modernization in dealing with minority females in America's criminal justice system, and modernity and the evolution of the rights of the disabled in America. The empirical and country studies largely support the theme of the book that modernity is a cultural and civilisational model. The global modernity has been progressing across world societies for more than two hundred years. It has been particularly remarkably advancing since the second half of the twentieth century. The world capitalist economy has become more global, world democracy has expanded, the global middle class has vastly grown, women's economic and political empowerments have widened, and global digital connectivity has increased. These social and economic transformations are far more fundamental for the future progress of democracy and global modernity. The further spread of global modernity is inevitable and irreversible. The present right-wing ideologies of nativism, localism, nationalism, fundamentalism, and divisiveness in the global political trajectory are transient and temporal peculiarities.Table of ContentsDedicationPrefaceForewordAcknowledgementsModernity, Modernization, and Globalization: Towards a Conceptual Framework: Editors IntroductionModernity, Religion and the Church and State Separation Doctrine: Issues and Challenges of Modernization and the Culture War in AmericaAmericas Global Project on Modernity: Continuity, Change, and Challenges in the 21st CenturyModernity, Power, and Politics: The Issues and Challenges of Democracy in the 21st Century (The Rise of Ultra-Rights in Global Politics)Modernity, Economic Change, and Cultural Values: Nonlinear Development of Central and East European Post-Socialist CountriesModernization, Globalization, and Transformations in Gender Equality: Laws, Social Change, and Women's Rights in IndiaWomens Modernity in Nigeria: Change and Transformations in Law, Politics, and CultureIslam, Ethnicity, and Modernity in Africa: Colonial and Post-Colonial Modernization in the West African State of Sierra LeoneModernity and Global Issues and Challenges of Religious Liberty and Tolerance: The Case of South Asia (India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh)The Modernity of the Oppressed: Chained Repression among Minority Females in Americas Criminal Justice SystemModernity and the Birth of Universal Human Rights: The Evolution of Legal Status and Cultural Attitudes Towards Disability in AmericaAbout the ContributorsIndex.

Book SynopsisConcern for humanity's future has never been more urgent than now - in the present time - when humanity has achieved the level of capability of destroying itself either through environmental disasters or nuclear wars. On the other hand, we have also achieved material and psychological knowledge and progress that can assist us in understanding not only the causation, but also the potential embedded in human nature, to choose either the path to self-destruction or to sustained peace. In this book, we present both the ubiquitous causes of violent discontent and wars and successful attempts to reduce or resolve conflict. Our authors from five continents represent historic, military, philosophical, socio-political, and psychological perspectives and address some of the important issues which any peace-oriented initiative or society at large must contend with. These refer to access to natural resources, ethnicity, religion, human rights, political systems (whether democratic or autocratic), differences in political and military strength and WMDs, and aspirations of the leaders - in combination with the ubiquitous need for control through domination, historic traditions (such as glorification of war effort as heroism and as a sacrifice in the name of lofty ideas). We offer a vision of a humanistic approach to promote peaceful problem solving that needs to be propagated by education, media, political programs and diplomacy in order to lead to peaceful transformations. The role of the military is given special attention. The novelty of our approach is that we address the typical life situations leading to social unrest and wars within the context of the human mind's capabilities to deal with life challenges. Our Challenge-Resilience-Resourcefulness-Wisdom model (previously published by NOVA) shows how we can study and analyse human errors, regressive tendencies and limitations in order to reframe them as an inspiration for optimal and wise decisions. Based on our authors' insights, we provide many descriptions of how to deal with social adversity in different locations of the world and also examples of actual successes and failures of peaceful transformations. These chapters provide important knowledge and tools for a wide range of professionals.Table of ContentsHuman Nature and Its Potential for War and PeaceWar, Peace, and Conflict Resolution in the Classical WorldEthnic Identity, Resources, Control and Supremacy: A Brief History of Early South African ConflictsJihad: Peaceful Definitions and ApplicationsFear and Loathing: Tribalism in the Age of the InternetThe War on Drugs: A Struggle for the Human SoulEritrea: A Failed State and Victim of Sellout DiplomacyShattered Hopes: The Disintegration of South Africas Peaceful TransitionColombia in Trauma: A Conflict and Post-Conflict ScenarioThe Central European Experience of War and Peace: The Nonviolent Czech CaseThe European Union: A Case Study in PeaceMutual Assured Destruction as a Strategy for PeaceConflict Resolution and Peace Building: Cultural Barriers and FacilitatorsResolution of International and Civil War Conflicts by Diplomatic and Military MeansIdeological and Policy Alternatives to the Resolution of Africas Perpetual Crisis: Is There a Worthy Policy or Ideological Alternative?Coping with Violence and Adversity: General Typology and Concrete Illustrations on Czech CaseOrientations toward Achievable World PeaceBuilding Peace in Times of Conflict: Examining Military Psychology through Gandhis LensConsciousness: The Bridge Between War and PeacePolemology: The Pursuit for Lasting PeaceVirtue as a Basis for Non-Violence and Creative Maladjustment: Humanistic and Positive Psychological Solutions to War and ViolenceAn Integrated Quantum Field Theory of Cosmos, Consciousness and Algorithmic Intelligence to Promote PeaceEducation for Peace and Conflict ResolutionIs Peace Achievable?Index.

  • How Capitalism and the Liberal Market-System

Nova Science Publishers Inc How Capitalism and the Liberal Market-System

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCapitalism and the liberal approach to markets have been assailed for long, and from several quarters as well, on the grounds of an extensive swathe of topics stretching from globalization through wealth distribution, infighting among groups of interest, unemployment, wide-ranging poverty, class struggles, imperialism and the like. There is no denying that time runs out for both capitalism and liberal markets in representative democracies. On the other hand, authoritarian or populist regimes are intensely trying other political and economic roads by putting on impressive performances as the one China has claimed for the last decades. This book, however, sets forth another standpoint, asserting that capitalism and economic liberalism have fostered and empowered a triad comprising organized crime, corruption and ecocide to an extent not witnessed before in human history. This partnership stemmed from the internal dynamics of capitalism and economic liberalism that failed in strengthening the institutions of representative democracies and neglected the most basic social issues. To add insult to injury, the triad took advantage of the same tool kit of organizational skills and technologies that allowed praiseworthy companies to thrive and develop, but without displaying any moral constraint and with dire contempt of the law instead. In contrast with the conventional approach, this book connects the dots between the bad politics and worse governance that organizations in the triad extensively have carried out so far. For the first time in the literature, the threads of organized crime, corruption and ecocide are borne to light by showing how rotten politics and criminal governances have been intertwined in the end. If capitalism and the liberal economics are doomed to failure, the trappings of the triad put both ideologies on the slippery slope and will bring them to account at last. It is the author's contention that to redress the balance in representative democracies, their underlying political systems must work their way through post capitalism by means of social democracy and social markets, which amounts to a new governance and a better politics. The broad and innovative scope of the book can be surveyed through the titles of its seven chapters: governance and politics; how accountability and transparency become social learning processes; political conflict-systems and dual governance; dysfunctional governance, the capture of the state, and corruption; the governance and politics of organized crime and ecocide; the day of reckoning for capitalism and the liberal market system; social democracy, social markets, and the welfare state will stand for post capitalism.Table of ContentsPreface; Acknowledgments; Governance and Politics; How Accountability and Transparency Become Social Learning Processes; Political Conflict-Systems, the Clinical Approach to Conflicts of Interest, and Dual Governance; Dysfunctional Governance, the Capture of the State, and Corruption; The Governance and Politics of Organized Crime and Ecocide; The Day of Reckoning for Capitalism and the Liberal Market System; Social Democracy, Social Markets, and the Welfare State Will Stand for Post Capitalism; Copyright Credits; About the Author; Index.

Book SynopsisThe United States has been developing and deploying ballistic missile defenses (BMD) to defend against enemy missiles continuously since the late 1940s. Chapter 1 gives a brief history of the BMD Program. For over half a century, the Department of Defense (DOD) has funded efforts to defend the United States from ballistic missile attacks. The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) developing missile defense capabilities to defend the United States, deployed forces, and regional allies from missile attacks. Chapter 2 addresses for fiscal year 2018 (1) the progress MDA made in achieving delivery and testing goals and (2) the extent to which MDA made progress in developing and delivering integrated regional BMDS capabilities. Chapter 3 discusses (1) the challenges MDA and the defense intelligence community face in meeting the agency's threat assessment needs and (2) the extent to which MDA engages the defense intelligence community on missile defense acquisitions. Foreign countries have made advancements in their nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. Chapter 4 reports on the current status of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, while chapter 5 provides information on Iran's ballistic missile capabilities. Members of Congress and Pentagon officials have placed a growing emphasis on U.S. programs to develop hypersonic weapons as a part of an effort to acquire the capability for the United States to launch attacks against targets around the world in under an hour. Chapter 6 focuses, primarily, on the Pentagon's ongoing program to develop ballistic missile-based conventional prompt strike systems. The Navy undertook a conceptual design phase for the FFG(X) Guided Missile Frigate program that enabled industry to inform FFG(X) requirements, identify opportunities for cost savings, and mature different ship designs. Chapter 7 addresses the FFG(X) acquisition approach and contracting plans. Book SynopsisInformation concerning the island of Cuba was exceedingly unsatisfactory character until the search-light of American inquiry was thrown upon it from the beginning of the war for Cuban liberty early in 1895. Although our next-door neighbor to the south, with a perfect winter climate and a host of interesting and picturesque attractions for travelers, tourists had been comparatively few, measured by the numbers that might have been expected. All of the reasons for this were those which naturally followed the characteristic Spanish rule of the island. Publicity was not welcomed, inquiry was not welcomed, travelers were not welcomed. The cities and the accommodations they offered were in many ways far behind those of like age and size in the other countries of the globe. Railway construction and the making of highways had lagged disgracefully, because the exorbitant taxes collected were looted by the officers of the government as their own spoils. No other country so near to the highways of ocean commerce and so accessible from the United States was so little known.Table of ContentsPreface; A War for Liberty and Humanity; How Columbus Found the "Pearl of the Antilles"; Spain's Black Historical Record; Buccaneering in the Spanish Main; Commercial Development of Cuba; Beauties of a Tropical Island; Wealth from Nature's Store in the Forest and Fields of Cuba; The Cubans and How They Live; Havana, the Island Metropolis; The Cities of Cuba; Mutterings of Insurrection; Outbreak of the Ten Years' War; Massacre of the Virginius Officers and Crew; Operations of the Ten Years' War; The Peace of Zanjon and Its Violated Pledges; Preparations for Another Rebellion; The Cuban Junta and Its Work; Key West and the Cubans; Another Stroke for Freedom; Jose Marti and Other Cuban Heroes; Desperate Battles with Machete and Rifle; Filibusters from Florida; Weyler the Butcher; Cuba Under the Scourge; Fitzhugh Lee to the Front; Americans in Spanish Dungeons; Maceo Dead by Treachery; Weyler's Reconcentration Policy and Its Horrors; American Indignation Growing; Outrages on Americans in Cuba; McKinley Succeeds Cleveland; The Case of Evangelina Cisneros; Work of Clara Barton and the Red Cross; The Catastrophe to the Maine; Patience at the Vanishing Point; Events in the American Congress; President McKinley Acts; Strength of the Opposing Squadron and Armies; Battleships and Troops Begin to Move; Diplomatic Relations Terminate; First Guns and First Prizes of the War; Declaration of War; Call for the National Guard, Our Citizen Soldiery; Blockade of Cuban Ports; Spanish Dissensions at Home; The Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Other Colonies of Spain; Progress of Hostilities; Sea Fight off Manila, Americans Victorious; Hawaii, and Our Annexation Policy; Continued Success for American Soldiers and Sailors; The Invasion of Puerto Rico; The Surrender of Manila; Victorious Close of the War; Personal Reminiscences; Index.

Book SynopsisPrior to the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, insurers generally did not exclude or separately charge for coverage of terrorism risk. The events of September 11, 2001, changed this as insurers realized the extent of possible terrorism losses. Congress responded to the disruption in the insurance market by passing the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-297). The goals of TRIA are to (1) protect consumers by addressing market disruptions and ensuring the continued widespread availability and affordability of commercial property/casualty insurance for terrorism risk; and (2) allow for a transitional period for the private markets to stabilize, resume pricing of such insurance, and build capacity to absorb any future losses, while preserving state insurance regulation and consumer protections. The book looks at issues surrounding TRIA.Table of ContentsPreface; Terrorism Risk Insurance: Overview and Issue Analysis for the 116th Congress; Protecting America: The Reauthorization of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program; Terrorism Risk Insurance: Market Challenges May Exist for Current Structure and Alternative Approaches; Terrorism Risk Insurance: Market Is Stable but Treasury Could Strengthen Communications about Its Processes; Terrorism Risk Insurance: Program Changes Have Reduced Federal Fiscal Exposure; The Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA); Index.

Book SynopsisThe Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) processes to identify, collect, document, and share information about family members apprehended at the southwest border are fragmented. DHS's U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehends family members and determines how information about each individual -- and his or her relationship to other family members -- will be collected and documented. Other DHS components, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), use information collected at the time of apprehension to inform how those who are members of a family, including children, will proceed through immigration proceedings. Family members apprehended at the border and placed into expedited removal that indicate an intention to apply for asylum, or a fear of persecution or torture or fear of return to their home country, are referred to DHS's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for a credible fear screening. Book SynopsisThere has never been a thorough review of the research and speculation on suicide terrorism. I read roughly 600 articles on suicide terrorism for this book. 250 are cited because they had something to offer. 350 are listed separately as a reference source for others. There have been almost no experts on suicide writing on the topic. I found only three articles on suicide terrorism in suicidology or death journals. Those writing on suicide terrorism have little or no expertise in the field of suicidology. This review is written by a suicidologist. For example, writers on suicide terrorism never cite work on suicide in the oppressed, imitation and contagion effects in suicide, typologies of suicidal behavior, or mass murder. (The present author has written a book on mass murder and published research on mass murder in addition to his extensive work on suicide.) The book starts with introductory chapters on suicide and mass murder to provide a setting for the review. The book is a critical review and so will be provocative. All the speculations are mentioned, and the research is reviewed and, if appropriate, critiqued.Table of ContentsPreface; Part 1: Background -- Is Suicide Terrorism Really Suicide?; Mass Murder; Oppression and Suicide; Typologies of Suicide; Imitation and Contagion; Martyrdom and Altruistic Suicide; Comments on this Background. • How Capitalism and the Liberal Market-System

Nova Science Publishers Inc How Capitalism and the Liberal Market-System

The broad and innovative scope of the book can be surveyed through the titles of its seven chapters: governance and politics; how accountability and transparency become social learning processes; political conflict-systems and dual governance; dysfunctional governance, the capture of the state, and corruption; the governance and politics of organized crime and ecocide; the day of reckoning for capitalism and the liberal market system; social democracy, social markets, and the welfare state will stand for post capitalism.Table of ContentsPreface; Governance and Politics; How Accountability and Transparency Become Social Learning Processes; Political Conflict-Systems, the Clinical Approach to Conflicts of Interest, and Dual Governance; Dysfunctional Governance, the Capture of the State, and Corruption; The Governance and Politics of Organized Crime and Ecocide; The Day of Reckoning for Capitalism and the Liberal Market System; Social Democracy, Social Markets, and the Welfare State Will Stand for Post Capitalism; Copyright Credits; About the Author; Index.

Book SynopsisHELPING THE GOOD DO BETTER pulls back the curtain on the corridors of power in Washington to reveal how social change really happens. This book offers lessons from the trenches on how some of this generation's most defining social issues -- AIDS, disabilities, global poverty, cancer, human trafficking, national service, early childhood education, and social entrepreneurship -- engendered landmark federal policies. Each chapter tells the story of how a particular issue was shaped by the movements and legislation at the center of public debate. Each case provides powerful lessons about how coalitions are built, strategies crafted, and powerful interests challenged in high-stakes, no-holds-barred political battles. Doing good requires more than just providing programs and services. It requires coordination, organization, and a new, stronger emphasis on and dedication to advocacy. Participating in advocacy is no longer a luxury-it is a necessity. Visionaries and activists together with "white hat" lobbyists -- people who understand the power of politics and who are able to put it to work to serve the public interest -- have won some of the most transformative policy fights in recent times. The culmination of those experiences, of fighting and winning on behalf of public interest causes, is presented here in a new theory for social change. Successful campaigns and movements must possess a lobbyist's combined approach to policy, politics, and press. Leveraging the 3 P's, with true passion and discipline, can create results that are nothing short of awe-inspiring.An insightful first-person guide to advocacy by a white-hat lobbyist who was in the rooms where historic social changes were made, HELPING THE GOOD DO BETTER is a direct and honest look at government in action and the behind-the-scenes players who help make progress a reality.

Book SynopsisRaymond Williams, whose other works include Keywords, The Country and the City, Culture and Society, and Modern Tragedy, was one of the world’s foremost cultural critics. Almost uniquely, his work bridged the divides between aesthetic and socio-economic inquiry, between Marxist thought and mainstream liberal thought, and between the modern and post-modern world. When The Long Revolution first appeared in 1961, much of the acclaim it received was based on its prescriptions for Britain in the ’60s, which form a relatively brief final section of the whole. The body of the book has since come to be recognized as one of the foundation documents in the cultural analysis of English-speaking culture. The “long revolution” of the title is a cultural revolution, which Williams sees as having unfolded alongside the democratic revolution and the industrial revolution. With this book, Williams led the way in recognizing the importance of the growth of the popular press, the growth of standard English, and the growth the reading public in English-speaking culture and in Western culture as a whole. In addition, Williams’s discussion of how culture is to be defined and analyzed has been of considerable importance in the development of cultural studies as an independent discipline.Originally published by Chatto & Windus, The Long Revolution is now available only in this Broadview Encore Edition.Table of ContentsForewordForeword to the Pelican EditionIntroductionPART ONE The Creative Mind The Analysis of Culture Individuals and Societies Images of Society PART ONE Education and British Society The Growth of the Reading Public The Growth of the Popular Press The Growth of ‘Standard English’ The Social History of English Writers The Social History of Dramatic Forms Realism and the Contemporary Novel PART THREEBritain in the 1960sNotes to the Pelican EditionIndex

  • Humanitarian Intervention: Moral and

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisInternational law makes it explicit that states shall not intervene militarily or otherwise in the affairs of other states; it is a central principle of the charter of the United Nations. But international law also provides an exception; when a conflict within a state poses a threat to international peace, military intervention by the UN may be warranted. (Indeed, the UN Charter provides for an international police force, though nothing has ever come of this provision). The Charter and other UN documents also assert that human rights are to be protected—but in the past the responsibility for the protection of human rights has for the most part been allowed to rest on the government of the state where the violation of rights occurs. Not surprisingly in this context, the question of what protection (if any) should be provided by the UN or otherwise to individuals when their human rights are violated by their governments or with the complicity of their governments remains a contentious issue. Should the principle of respect for state sovereignty trump the principle of respect for human rights? Historically it has been allowed to do so, but recently it has been more and more widely argued that when states fail to respect the human rights of their citizens (or of others who reside within their boundaries), they may be held accountable for their actions. Is military humanitarian intervention justifiable? And if so, under what circumstances? Those are the questions addressed in this collection of essays. The focus of the volume is on the abstract principles involved; though reference is sometimes made to specific cases, the essays here consist primarily of philosophical reflection on the abstract issues. (A companion volume on the specific issues surrounding a particular case, Lessons of Kosovo, is being published simultaneously.)Table of ContentsPreface, Aleksandar JokicIntroduction, Burleigh Wilkins1 War, Revolution, and Humanitarian Intervention, Anthony Ellis2 Humanitarian Intervention: Some Doubts, Burleigh Wilkins3 Foreign Armed Intervention: Between Justified Aid and Illegal Violence, Jovan Babic4 Humanitarian Intervention and Moral Theory, Michael Philips5 Preempting Humanitarian Interventions, Thomas Pogge6 Humanitarian Intervention and International Law, Alfred P.
