Book SynopsisWith contributions from leading scholars in their field, this collection of fourteen essays offers wide-ranging but incisive perspectives on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Apart from informing and enlightening the reader, the essays offer a tribute to Professor Takashi Shiraishi, the renowned Japanese scholar, for his many contributions across continents and disciplines as well as his personal qualities as a long-time colleague, teacher and friend. Now Professor Emeritus of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Shiraishi-sensei has had an outstanding career as a teacher, scholar, administrator and policy advisor, his many roles including Deputy Director of the Southeast Asia Program at Cornell University and president both of GRIPS and the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan. Often with Japan at their nexus, the essays speak to three enduring themes in the research interests that spanned Shiraishi's half-century career, namely, political movements in Southeast Asia; national and regional politics in China and Japan; and the links between ideology, networks and policies at critical junctures of state formation. An introduction by the editors reviews Shiraishi's contributions to many areas of scholarship (these are documented in the back matter, in a bibliography of his publications and writings in English and Japanese). Among authors of the fourteen essays that follow are Patricio Abinales, Chris Baker, Caroline Hau, Peter Katzenstein, Pasuk Phongpaichit and Thongchai Winichakul. In a concluding lengthy interview Shiraishi speaks for the first time, in a frank if light-hearted tone, of his diverse experiences in academia, as student, faculty and administrator, his thoughts on area studies and their connections with official policy-making, and his initiatives for building regional networks of research and intellectual exchange. A festschrift in English being a rarity for a Japanese scholar, this collection offers valuable if indirect insights into the links and influences that have animated a burgeoning community of international academic exchange and expert cooperation. This has been facilitated by Shiraishi's position, time and again (even if an accidental one, as he likes to say), as a transnational intersection point for colleagues, students and friends in their many various research pursuits. A rich and rewarding collection.

  • Peeters Publishers Selling and Rejecting Politics in Early Modern

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisPower in the early modern age, as in the present age, is an important subject for debate. What is power? Who has it or should have it? What are the underlying reasons for this? And especially, how is this power exercised, legitimised, and accepted? The issue of power in Europe in the early modern age is all the more significant because the demarcation line between the worldly and the religious component of power is not always clearly drawn. The fact is that power can only exist in a structured context where there is a measure of approval and consensus on the way that power is constituted and exercised. It is actually about the relationship between those who have or crave power and those who find themselves in subordinate positions. Many means of persuasion are deployed in propaganda mechanisms to underscore the rightness or superiority of this relationship. The reverse side of this phenomenon is equally important: the extent to which criticism is being voiced and other opinions are being proclaimed is at least as relevant to an evaluation of the relationship between both groups, i.e. rulers and subordinates. In societies where pomp and circumstance bear the brunt of the persuasive process - since not everyone can read or write - visual elements are crucial: painting, sculpture, architecture, urban planning, court parties and ceremonies play a major role, as do all the products issued by the printing presses: tracts and pamphlets, illustrated or unillustrated. The essays in this volume deal not so much with theories of power but rather with the ways that rulers attempt to motivate the legitimation of their power and convey their own superiority, be it genuine or spurious. They focus on the persuasive production emanating from governments as well as on the reactions of other parties, which show both confirmative and contesting tendencies.

Urim Publications To Unify a Nation: My Vision for the Future of

Book SynopsisExploring the issues of the separation between religion and state in Israel, this book by Knesset parliament member Rabbi Dov Lipman lays out his vision for the future. Lipman was elected to the Yesh Atid party, which, though largely secular, calls for a more moderate and open form of Judaism. His is a voice of reason in the religious debates and battles that have threatened to undermine Jewish unity in Israel and around the world. Lipman has observed firsthand the polarization, extremism, and discrimination that have been on the upswing in Israel, and his book examines specific practical issues rather than general theological questions in the Israeli political scene. As the only ultra-Orthodox member of the current coalition, he offers a unique insight into the internal societal struggles of the Jewish community as well as the hope for a better future for both Israel and Jews around the world.Trade Review"[Lipman] deserve[s] appreciation for [his] activities which seek to build bridges of unity, understanding, and tolerance between the religious and non-religious populations in Israel. [His] public actions serve as an example of responsible rabbinic work which adds honor to the Jewish nation and to the State of Israel and reflects the deep ethics and morals of Judaism in its glory." --Shimon Peres, president of Israel"What unites a brilliant, optimistic, and indefatigable Orthodox rabbi like Dov Lipman and... me? [...] This book, much like its author, deals with this problem with courage and wisdom. This is not simply a book but a call to action and the beginning of a discussion." --Yair Lapid, Finance Minister of the State of Israel"MK Rabbi Dov Lipman's new book is important for two primary reasons. Firstly, it deals with the fundamental issues affecting our nation and the way it ought to look.... Secondly, it was written by a young politician who, in his own combination of traditional observance and involvement in the broader world, presents a personal example worthy of emulation and representative of how many of the seeming paradoxes affecting Israel might be resolved." --Natan Sharansky, Chairman of the Executive, Jewish Agency for Israel"Exploring the issues of the separation between religion and state in Israel, this book by Knesset parliament member Rabbi Dov Lipman lays out his vision for the future." • NUS Press Unraveling Myanmar's Transition: Progress,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe optimism provoked by Myanmar's political reforms in 2011-2012 has now given way to a sense that the uneven nature of change in this nation of 54 million has lead to instability and uncertainty. The liberalization of critical sectors and expansion of certain freedoms - such as political and legal opportunities for expression and mobilization - contrasts with the entrenchment of structural problems. It becomes ever more difficult to tackle ethnic marginalization and conflict, over-dependence on natural resource extraction, inadequate public services, and problems of under-capacity in the civilian bureaucracy. The result is the build up of a toxic environment in which classism, racism, and bigotry threaten to rend Myanmar's already delicate social fabric. The contributors to this volume bring unique perspectives and methodologies to bear to unravel Myanmar's tangled challenges. Whether it is through studying corruption by analyzing the country's real estate bubble, assessing civil society advocacy capacity against extractive industries, or gauging the strength (and surprising weakness) of Myanmar's military, the volume employs unconventional approaches and analytical rigor to address a fundamental question: is Myanmar itself unraveling?Trade Review“Variously wide-ranging and penetrating, the essays assembled in this volume examine Myanmar's short decade of dramatic political and social change in all its complexity. . . . Dense with original research and fresh interpretations of what is happening in Myanmar and why, they bode well for the future of scholarship on this no-longer overlooked country at the nexus of South and Southeast Asia.”

  • NUS Press A History of the People’s Action Party, 1985-2021

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe People's Action Party (PAP) of Singapore is among the longest-ruling democratically-elected political parties in the world, in power continuously since Singapore gained self-rule in 1959. Such longevity is the product of an institution that is itself dynamic and responsive. But remarkably, the story of the party as institution has not received the sustained study it deserves from either historians or political scientists. This narrative history of the PAP follows the story through decisions made by party leaders as they sought to respond to the changing demands and expectations of the Singapore electorate over a thirty-year period that saw Singapore enter the ranks of developed nations. The focus is on change in four dimensions: in the communications methods and styles the party adopted, the mechanisms it developed for managing institutional change, the sometimes vexed question of party renewal, and the evolution of economic and social policy. Drawing on internal party documents and multiple interviews with key leaders over the course of a decade, this book provides a detailed portrait of a robust political institution and establishes a distinctive new narrative of Singapore politics.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn Prisms on the Golden Pagoda, a group of nationalists, political leaders and scholars set down their thoughts on Myanmar's national reconciliation process. Invitations to attend a workshop were sent to veteran politicians and ethnic leaders as well as scholars on the understanding that it would be an academic rather than a political event. However, the interest shown in the event by activists aroused the suspicions of the Myanmar government, and several invited participants were unable to obtain permission to attend, or decided to withdraw after preparing papers for the occasion. This volume presents selected papers prepared for the workshop. Just as prism-like glass mosaics or mirrors separate white light into a spectrum of colours that gives Myanmar's pagodas a glittering iridescence, this collection of papers offers a spectrum of perspectives on the national reconciliation process. The purpose is not to suggest solutions to Myanmar's political problems but rather to show how the national reconciliation effort has been viewed inside the country, and how senior military officers have dealt with issues relating to it. Three of the contributors to this collection (Thamarr Taman, Widura Thakin Chit Maung and U Shwe Ohn) passed away before the manuscript could be finalised for submission. They, and the other contributors, were invaluable repositories of information about Myanmar politics, and their contributions provide an important insider's perspective on crucial issues facing the country as it enters an apparent phase of liberalisation.Trade Review[This] book is a must-read for those interested in Burma." —Ardeth Maung Thawnghmung, University of Massachusetts Lowell
