Book SynopsisFor the first time, a Neuroscientist and Senior Lecturer at MIT reveals the surprising science that supports The Law of Attraction as an effective tool for self-discovery and offers a guide to discovering your authentic self to access your best life now.Self-help books like The Secret show us that if we can tap into “The Law of Attraction,” we have the power to change our destiny simply by reshaping our mind. Millions of people have used the ancient systems of manifestation and visualization to find health, success, love, friendship, wealth, and more. But does the “Law of Attraction” actually work? And more important, is this kind of life-changing philosophy within reach for everyone, even the most skeptical among us?As Dr. Tara Swart, psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and Senior Lecturer at MIT shows us in The Source, if we can strip away our skepticism, these ancient tools of manifestation and visualization are fundamentally powerful and incredibly effective at freeing us of self-limiting behaviors and propelling us toward our truest, most authentic selves. Swart reveals how and why these systems actually work by offering the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience and behavioral psychology, including lessons in neuroplasticity, magneticism, emotional and logical thinking, and even hydration, self-care, and relaxation. Next, she describes her own journey from skeptic to believer, and guides readers through the scientific breakthroughs and personal revelations that changed her from an unhappy, close-minded, and disconnected woman wanting more from life, to a successful entrepreneur living with confidence, purpose, and joy. The truth is, most of the things we want—health, happiness, wealth, love—are governed by our ability to think, feel, and act—in other words, by our brain. Dr. Swart combines the insights and inspiration of The Secret with the practical lessons of The Master Key System to help a new generation fulfill their dreams. The Source is a rigorous, proven toolkit for unlocking our minds—and reaching our fullest potential.

Book SynopsisDrawing on a wealth of new evidence, pioneering research psychologist David DeSteno shows why religious practices and rituals are so beneficial to those who follow them—and to anyone, regardless of their faith (or lack thereof).Scientists are beginning to discover what believers have known for a long time: the rewards that a religious life can provide. For millennia, people have turned to priests, rabbis, imams, shamans, and others to help them deal with issues of grief and loss, birth and death, morality and meaning. In this absorbing work, DeSteno reveals how numerous religious practices from around the world improve emotional and physical well-being. With empathy and rigor, DeSteno chronicles religious rites and traditions from cradle to grave. He explains how the Japanese rituals surrounding childbirth help strengthen parental bonds with children. He describes how the Apache Sunrise Ceremony makes teenage girls better able to face the rigors of womanhood. He shows how Buddhist meditation reduces hostility and increases compassion. He demonstrates how the Jewish practice of sitting shiva comforts the bereaved. And much more. DeSteno details how belief itself enhances physical and mental health. But you don’t need to be religious to benefit from the trove of wisdom that religion has to offer. Many items in religion’s “toolbox” can help the body and mind whether or not one believes. How God Works offers advice on how to incorporate many of these practices to help all of us live more meaningful, successful, and satisfying lives.

Book SynopsisA pioneering researcher and one of the world’s foremost experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for healing Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Such experiences inevitably leave traces on minds, emotions, and even on biology. Sadly, trauma sufferers frequently pass on their stress to their partners and children. Renowned trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neurofeedback, mindfulnes

  • Neuropsychological Assessment

Oxford University Press Inc Neuropsychological Assessment

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNow in its Fifth Edition, Neuropsychological Assessment reviews the major neurobehavioral disorders associated with brain dysfunction and injury. This is the 35th anniversary of the landmark first edition. As with previous editions, this edition provides a comprehensive coverage of the field of adult clinical neuropsychology in a single source. By virtue of the authors'' clinical and research specializations, this book provides a broad-based and in-depth coverage of current neuroscience research and clinical neuropsychology practice. While the new edition is updated to include new features and topics, it remains true to the highly-regarded previous editions. Methods for obtaining optimum data are given in the form of hypothesis-testing techniques, clinical tips, and clinical examples. In the seven years since the previous edition, many advancements have been made in techniques for examining brain function and in our knowledge about brain-behavior relationships. For example, a surge of functional imaging data has emerged and new structural imaging techniques have provided exquisite detail about brain structure. For the first time, this edition includes examples of these advancements, many in stunning color. This edition also includes new tools for clinicians such as a neuroimaging primer and a comparison table of the neuropsychological features of progressive dementias. The chapters on assessment procedures include discussion of issues related to test selection and reviews of recently published as well as older test batteries used in general neuropsychological assessment, plus newly developed batteries for specific issues.Trade ReviewOverall this volume is well organized and provides a definitive guide for neuropsychological assessment. This 4th edition is a useful reference for clinicians and investigators concerned with the neurobehavioral aspects of neurological disease and injury, and it is indispensable for clinical neuropsychologists. * Journal of Neurosurgery *It is to the credit of these authors who have not only undertaken this monumental task, but have pulled it off in an altogether scholarly and professional way such that this new volume, much like its predecessor editions, and again takes its rightful place among the leading books in contemporary neuropsychology. * The Clinical Neuropsychologist *The book, often referred to as 'Lezak,' is without question the most widely-consulted source on neuropsychological assessment as a clinical enterprise. Book SynopsisA scientific take on the still-central therapeutic concept of “the unconscious.”Trade Review"Sigmund Freud began his career as a neurologist and neuroanatomist, and he remained convinced throughout his life that one day psychoanalysis would reconnect with neuroscience. The Neuropsychology of the Unconscious fulfills his prediction, exploring the inner dynamics of psychology in the light of modern neuroscience. By providing a high-level interdisciplinary integration, this readable and engaging book furthers the understanding of difficult clinical problems for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts." -- Lewis Aron, PhD, Director, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis "Efrat Ginot's remarkable new book shatters our long-held view of the unconscious as a repository for unwanted experience. In this absorbing volume, Ginot deftly displays her extraordinary ability to understand the human brain and simultaneously ground decades of neuroscience research in everyday human experience and clinical practice. The Neuropsychology of the Unconscious is unique in its application of brain science to the passionate pursuit of empathy and transformation. " -- Karen J. Book SynopsisUp to the 1960s, psychology was deeply under the influence of behaviourism, which focused on stimuli and responses, and regarded consideration of what may happen in the mind as unapproachable scientifically. This began to change with the devising of methods to try to tap into what was going on in the ''black box'' of the mind, and the development of ''cognitive psychology''. With the study of patients who had suffered brain damage or injury to limited parts of the brain, outlines of brain components and processes began to take shape, and by the end of the 1970s, a new science, cognitive neuroscience, was born. But it was with the development of ways of accessing activation of the working brain using imaging techniques such as PET and fMRI that cognitive neuroscience came into its own, as a science cutting across psychology and neuroscience, with strong connections to philosophy of mind. Experiments involving subjects in scanners while doing various tasks, thinking, problem solving, and remembering are shedding light on the brain processes involved. The research is exciting and new, and often makes media headlines. But there is much misunderstanding about what brain imaging tells us, and the interpretation of studies on cognition. In this Very Short Introduction Richard Passingham, a distinguished cognitive neuroscientist, gives a provocative and exciting account of the nature and scope of this relatively new field, and the techniques available to us, focusing on investigation of the human brain. He explains what brain imaging shows, pointing out common misconceptions, and gives a brief overview of the different aspects of human cognition: perceiving, attending, remembering, reasoning, deciding, and acting. Passingham concludes with a discussion of the exciting advances that may lie ahead.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Book SynopsisBeyond ADHD weaves Emmerson's personal story of his ADHD diagnosis, exploring along the way the latest medical, scientific and societal explanations and tools for managing and living with the condition. Including interviews with a number of experts at the forefront of next-generation ADHD diagnostics and treatment, he questions the cookie-cutter way ADHD is commonly diagnosed and treated. Suggesting that the list of symptoms often used to identify ADHD can be attributed to many other disorders and conditions, he explores how and why ADHD diagnoses have increased by 50% in the last ten years. Emmerson advocates a different approach to ADHD, arguing that it should be a diagnosis of exclusion rather than the other way around, and that we must look past the label, recognizing that individual symptoms vary and treatment plans should be better tailored to the individual. He examines mental and behavioral issues from all sides, including the possibility that nurturing rather than trying toTrade ReviewMisdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder after a suicide attempt, Emmerson devotes his book and his life to asking good questions about how to prevent and best treat the condition. With veteran coauthor Yehling, he explains why he thinks the ADHD label should be retired and how he thinks people with it should be treated. He believes prescriptions should be used only as a last resort (his own experiences with them were not good). He identifies a major problem: doctors base their subjective diagnosis on observed behaviors, which is one reason 13-percent of kids are now diagnosed with it. 'We need to nail down and laser in on what ADHD is and what it isn’t,' he says. It’s hard to argue with recommendations like drinking plenty of water and avoiding high-fructose corn syrup, though Emmerson isn’t an M.D. Overall his enthusiasm for his topic and his general good advice, including promoting self-esteem and trying to create a 'gentler world,' will resonate with everyone concerned about ADHD, including his hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers. * Booklist *Courageous, tenacious, smart, and full of a hockey goalie's all-star heart, Jeff Emmerson probes behind the slogans and labels to get at the truth. • Transforming Cognitive Rehabilitation

    Guilford Publications Transforming Cognitive Rehabilitation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGrounded in cutting-edge knowledge about cognitive function and recovery from brain injury, this practical reference and text builds on the authors' influential earlier work, Optimizing Cognitive Rehabilitation. It incorporates major advances in the field to provide a new framework for assessing patients and developing individualized rehabilitation plans. The distinguished authors present principles and procedures for promoting engagement, teaching cognitive strategies and discrete facts and routines, introducing external cognitive aids, and supporting patients' social competence. Additional topics include considerations for using computer-based training, managing functional cognitive symptoms, and providing cognitive rehabilitation in the inpatient setting. The book features detailed case illustrations and filled-out examples of 19 reproducible planning and progress monitoring forms. Blank forms can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size.Trade Review"The authors have not just updated their previous work, but have completely reconceptualized the field of cognitive rehabilitation. This much-needed book demonstrates the need to transcend traditional boundaries, such as those between restoration and compensation or between individual cognitive processes. It presents a truly holistic approach to rehabilitation that is always person centered and that focuses on functional changes and individual empowerment. This book will be required reading for any graduate student, intern, or postdoctoral fellow interested in learning the theory and practice of cognitive rehabilitation. Even as a practitioner of 30 years, I learned quite a lot that I will incorporate into my clinical work and future research studies. The volume is jam-packed with case studies, handouts, checklists, and planning sheets that allow clinicians to easily apply the models and frameworks in their daily sessions."--Sarah A. Raskin, PhD, Charles A. Dana Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Trinity College "It has been challenging to develop a coherent approach to cognitive rehabilitation, considering the complexity of human cognition, the many conditions that can affect it, and the varied goals of those we treat. This book surely lives up to its title, providing an integrated, transformative vision for the field and a set of systematic principles to guide practice in the face of evolving evidence. The authors' clinical recommendations are grounded in current research on learning and neuroplasticity, and organized in consistent procedural frameworks that support the clinician’s skill development. Case examples help clarify complex points in assessment and treatment planning. This book is an essential support resource for rehabilitation science faculty and students, as well as clinicians in practice."--John Whyte, MD, PhD, Institute Scientist Emeritus, Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute "This book is a 'must read' for students in the health professions and will make an excellent foundational text for cognitive rehabilitation courses. Students will benefit from the foci on person-centered care, everyday life goals, and transfer of learning, and from the generous use of case examples. Clinicians working with clients with acquired brain injury will appreciate the up-to-date evidence and practical examples. The book introduces the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS), an important framework for developing cognitive rehabilitation interventions, and provides examples of RTSS application throughout."--Deirdre R. Dawson, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, and Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, University of Toronto, Canada "This remarkable book goes beyond a summary of current evidence-based practice to address the complexities of cognitive rehabilitation. It includes methods to adjust therapies in light of psychological, social, and cultural factors, and ways to provide meaningful, functional services in the acute care setting. While a number of books cover the process and/or rationale of cognitive rehabilitation (the 'what' and 'why'), few books cover implementation (the 'how'). Here you have in-depth coverage of all three, making this an indispensable resource for experienced clinicians, researchers, and students alike. A welcome addition to the literature that provides a roadmap for empowering and guiding clients toward functional change and increased well-being."--Donald L. Book SynopsisIn 1996 Joseph LeDoux's The Emotional Brain presented a revelatory examination of the biological bases of our emotions and memories. Now, the world-renowned expert on the brain has produced with a groundbreaking work that tells a more profound story: how the little spaces between the neurons—the brain's synapses—are the channels through which we think, act, imagine, feel, and remember. Synapses encode the essence of personality, enabling each of us to function as a distinctive, integrated individual from moment to moment. Exploring the functioning of memory, the synaptic basis of mental illness and drug addiction, and the mechanism of self-awareness, Synaptic Self is a provocative and mind-expanding work that is destined to become a classic.

Book SynopsisThe Man who Lost His Language is a unique exploration of aphasia - losing the ability to use or comprehend words - as well as of the resilience of love. When Sir John Hale suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk, write or speak, his wife, Shelia, followed every available medical trail seeking knowledge of his condition and how he might be restored to health. This revised edition of a classic book includes an additional chapter detailing the latest developments in science and medicine since the first edition was published. This personal account of one couple's experience will be of interest to all those who want to know more about aphasia and related conditions.Trade ReviewWe have been given a truly inspired description of the power of love and devotion in the face of adversity. This is essential reading for anyone who wishes to know more about aphasia and related conditions. -- Signpost, Journal of Dementia and Mental Health Care of Older PeopleThe narrative of the individual case is, of course, highly personal. But it also drives forcefully home the message that each aphasia is different and how difficult it is to make generalizations here. -- Metapsychology OnlineThis book provides a moving account of the life of Sir John Hale following a stroke in 1992 that left him with aphasia. It is written by his wife Sheila. On one level, this is a love story and, as such, provides a moving account of the efforts of Sheila and John to overcome or adapt to the challenges of the loss of language. In this sense it is an engaging memoir... this book provides valuable insights into contemporary approaches to diagnosing and treating aphasia. It illustrates the complexity of aphasia and the challenges and theories that have been adopted and tested to try to bring about enhancements for patients and those who care for them. Sheila and John embark on a journey that will test their resilience and relationship to the full. It moves the reader to understand that there can be life after stroke and this can be exhilarating. -- Nursing StandardReviews of the first edition:'Sheila Hale's own grief is clear. It emanates from every word, each one tinged with unalleviated longing for a lover and friend. Chaplains may read this as a work of medical condition, or a biography of a great man, but its deepest threads are a story of grief and loss.Read this book as a cry of hurt and wonder from a wife looking into the darkness of a world stripped of words, which she had known, glimpsed, lived beside; a lost renaissance garden where once the nymphs of poetry and prose danced in the light of one man's intellect.' -- Scottish Journal of Healthcare ChaplaincyThe Man Who Lost his Language belongs on the same shelf as Jean-Dominique Bauby describing the stroke that left him paralysed except for one eyelid, Robert McCrum on the one from which he recovered, and John Bayley's account of Iris Murdoch's dementia. But it outstrips them all. -- The IndependentA triumph... a classic in the same way that Oliver Sacks's Awakenings is. -- Michael FraynSheila Hale's book enlarges the language of love. -- Brenda MaddoxOne of the most remarkable additions to the literature of illness in our time. -- The TimesA luminous biographical memoir and an enthralling testament of love... No one can help wondering what surprises the next heartbeat may bring. Sheila Hale's acute and compassionate book makes the unknown country seem a little less desolate. -- The IndependentA moving insight into the redemption of a great man... provocative - and uplifting. -- The ObserverI was left moved by this subtle, engaging and devoted memoir. -- The Times Literary SupplementHeartfelt, passionate... a beautifully written and extremely interesting book -- Literary ReviewAn extraordinary achievement: a moving account of an intimate relationship, and a rigorous investigation into the most up-to-date medical theories and treatments of a mysterious affliction. It raises all kinds of questions about language, communication and the brain. Most remarkable, it's full of jokes and surprises. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn ADHD and the Edison Gene, Thom Hartmann shows that the creativity, impulsiveness, risk taking, distractibility, and novelty seeking that are characteristic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are not signs of a disorder at all but instead are components of a highly adaptive skill set utilized by our hunting and gathering ancestors. These characteristics have been critical to the survival and development of our modern civilization and will be vital as humanity faces new challenges in the future. Hartmann, creator of the "hunter versus farmer" theory of ADHD, examines the differences in neurology between people with ADHD and those without, sharing recent discoveries that confirm the existence of an ADHD gene and the global catastrophe 40,000 years ago that triggered its development. He cites examples of significant innovators with ADHD traits, such as Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison, and argues that the children who possess the ADHD gene have neurology that is wired to give them brilliant success as artists, innovators, inventors, explorers, and entrepreneurs. Emphasizing the role that parents and teachers can play in harnessing the advantages of ADHD, he shares the story of how Edison was expelled from school for ADHD-related behavior and luckily his mother understood how to salvage his self-esteem and prepare him for a lifetime of success. Offering concrete strategies for nurturing, educating, and helping these children reach their full potential, Hartmann shows that rather than being "problems" such children are a vital gift to our society and the world.Trade Review“Like Edison, Thom Hartmann is a visionary who uses history to illuminate the potential cost to society of shackling unique minds aching to soar. He questions the cultural imperative that compels us to label what is outside the bell curve as pathological rather than extraordinary. In this new edition, Hartmann urges us to nurture the fearlessly innovative child and celebrate their differences. Our futures will ultimately be shaped by those undaunted by the spectra of the impossible--because they have been taught to believe in their own self-worth.” * Ellen Littman, Ph.D., coauthor of Understanding Girls with ADHD *“Instead of pathologizing the differences we call ADHD, we need to value neurodiversity, and Thom’s book shows us in rich detail how and why this is true. Thom’s work can help protect children and adults from the devastating effects of being viewed through a pervasive pathological lens--a much more severe problem than ADHD could ever be!” * Sari Solden, M.S., L.M.F.T., psychotherapist and author of Women with Attention Deficit Disorder and *“Thom Hartmann has made one of the most important contributions to transforming our understanding of ADHD. Thom was the first to consider ADHD in an evolutionary context. He showed that ADHD has not only a significant survival advantage in hunter gatherer societies, but that it also confers powerful advantages in our contemporary civilization. Thom was one of the very first to comment on the link between ADHD and creativity. He will be recognized as a pioneer contributing to the reconceptualization of ADHD from being simply a ‘disorder’ to being viewed as a ‘mode of thought’ characterized by strengths, such as enhanced creativity.” * Richard Silberstein Ph.D., professor emeritus, Swinburne University of Technology *"From the marvelous mind, and lively pen of Thom Hartmann comes this new opportunity to celebratethe magnificent diversity of how we learn to thrive Read it... and start a new conversation with your kids." * Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin, Director, The Maryland Institute for Ericksonian Hypnosis & Psychotherapy *“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age. Thom Hartmann explains that children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. They're ideally suited to becoming entrepreneurs, explorers, inventors, innovators, emergency room physicians and fighter pilots. Drugs are not the answer; nor is the structured education system which has no room for "problem" children. Hartmann has strategies to help parents and teachers bring out the best in so-called hyperactive kids.” * Nexus, February 2016 *“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age.…children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. I found this book insightful, informative and inspirational. The message I took away from this book was: ‘child-hood’ is not a psychological disorder--stop drugging our kids.” * New Dawn, Sandy Brightman, March 2016 *Table of ContentsForeword by Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D. Acknowledgments Introduction: A New View for Our Children Genetics and Differences 1993: The Hunter Gene Distractibility Impulsivity Risk-Taking Where Have All the Hunters Gone? Jessica Kingsley Publishers Parenting the ADD Child: Can't Do? Won't Do?

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisChildren with ADD or ADHD can be a parenting nightmare. They can be disruptive and destructive and do not respond to guidance like other children. Medication may reduce symptoms, but disruptive behaviour often persists. Is there anything that the parent can do?Parenting the ADD Child brings together for the first time a variety of tried and tested methods in a unique, comprehensive and accessible format that will not be found elsewhere. It goes beyond the identification of the symptoms to tackle the changes parents can make, ensuring that behaviour problems associated with ADD and ADHD are managed and reduced.Trade Reviewan accessible, practical text with plenty of charts and activities for both children and parents. And although the strategies are not new (they will be very familiar to anyone involved in the management of difficult behaviour), this, in a way, is a strength: at least they are tried and tested. A useful addition to your resource base, especially for lending to parents. -- TES Special Needseasy to follow, jargon-free, and very parent friendly. In each of the twelve steps there is: an introduction on the aim of the technique involved in that step; what the parent/child will learn; tasks/exercises for parents to complete; how to implement the technique; tips for success; answers to frequently asked questions from parents in relation to that technique. There is no timescale to complete the whole ADDapt programme as it is realistic in acknowledging each family is different and need to go at their own pace. The most appealing factor about this book is that it has clearly been written by someone who has worked extensively with parents of children with ADD, who is fully aware and understanding of the of the problems they experience. The first eight chapters of the book provide parents with invaluable information and advice on issues which need to be looked at before beginning the ADDapt programme. If you read the whole book from start to finish, the amount of information to take in can seem overwhelming. However, it is written in such a way that parents are repeatedly reassured, guided and motivated.Although the book is primarily aimed at parents of children with ADD, I recommend it to be an invaluable source of reference for all professionals involved with such children and their families. -- Michelle Griffinthe one to buy. It is a practical self help strategy for parents and essential reading for teachers and other professionals involved in the identification and therapy of ADHD children if they are to understand just how difficult the parenting task is. David Pentecost is a family therapist who has really listened and learnt what ADHD parenting is all about, and thankfully written this excellent book which gives a background to the parenting scheme he has called ADDapt - ADD Alternative Parenting Techniques - and then goes on to describe in practical terms the twelve stages of the ADDapt programme. Parents will be pleased to hear a professional acknowledge that good parenting skills are not enough. ADHD requires different skills where the normal rules of good parenting sometimes don't work. -- Special ChildrenA helpful and practical book for harassed parents. The appendices provide names and addresses of support groups, a useful reading list, websites and a programme of "special time" for older children. -- ACE BulletinIn this book there are good strategies for any parent in the way we speak to our children, and he emphasises how seldom we are crystal-clear about what we really want from them. He also urges every parent to spell out that there will be a comeback for bad behaviour, which you must follow through. Pentecost points out that when it is matter of bad behaviour in ADD children, there is a great deal that boils down to bad habits. And that they find it harder to learn the rules for getting along with people. So help your child to pick up new ways of doing things, which will mean you have to learn new ways too.If you are a parent of an ADD or ADHD child and you are flagging, read this book. You will get a lot of additional help from the list of resources. -- family2000onwards.comTable of Contents1. Has your child got ADD? 2. Why write this book? 3. Why not just take pills? 4. Harvard University Press Why Torture Doesnt Work

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisBesides being cruel and inhumane, torture does not work the way torturers assume it does. As Shane O’Mara’s account of the neuroscience of suffering reveals, extreme stress creates profound problems for memory, mood, and thinking, and sufferers predictably produce information that is deeply unreliable, or even counterproductive and dangerous.Trade ReviewOffers a passionate and informative riposte to those who feel a ‘war on terror’ justifies barbarism. -- Hayden Murphy * The Guardian *Shane O’Mara’s book is a rebuttal to the torture memos that came out a few years ago that justified ‘enhanced interrogation’ methods used in Guantanamo Bay and Northern Ireland. He takes an empirical approach to torture. From a scientific point of view, even before getting into the morality, it is just ineffective. The FBI said the best technique is to get clever interrogators who are good at forming bonds. The analogy he uses is that if you had a computer that had information you wanted you wouldn’t hit it with a hammer because that would affect its recall. Humans work the same way. -- Neil Delamere * Irish Examiner *A powerful, convincing and thought-provoking volume. O’Mara presents us with the overwhelming scientific evidence that torture simply does not work. What is more, it damages memory and is highly likely to produce flawed intelligence. Claims of the utility of torture are no more than ‘cargo cult science.’…The significance of this book is difficult to overstate. Its conveyance of moral outrage as regards the practice of torture is unqualified and it delivers the evidence to repudiate all utilitarian justifications of the practice. It offers science-based pointers to manners of conducting interrogation that are both more effective and compliant with human rights standards. Furthermore, giventhe questions surrounding the utility of all statement-related evidence, it supports the long-standing calls for more focus on such other evidentiary sources as forensics and surveillance. It has a great deal to say to contemporary policy-makers and for police and intelligence services, not least at a moment of enhanced attention to counter-terrorism. The book demonstrates the importance of science in the pursuit of human rights…O’Mara deserves some sort of prize for this work. -- Michael O’Flaherty * Irish Times *Instead of simply providing utilitarian arguments, [O’Mara] argues that there is no evidence from psychology or neuroscience for many of the specious justifications of torture as an information-gathering tool. Providing an abundance of gruesome detail, O’Mara marshals vast, useful information about the effects of such practices on the brain and the body. -- Lasana T. Harris * Nature *Does torture actually work? To be sure, it can compel people to confess to crimes and to repudiate their religious and political beliefs. But there is a world of difference between compelling someone to speak and compelling them to tell the truth… Yet the assumption underlying the ticking time bomb defense is that abusive questioning reliably causes people to reveal truthful information that they would otherwise refuse to disclose. Few scholars have scrutinized this assumption—and none with the rigor, depth, and clarity of Shane O’Mara in his excellent book, Why Torture Doesn’t Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation… Invoking the relevant science, he shows that torture undermines the very neurocognitive mechanisms requisite for recalling veridical information from memory. -- Richard McNally * Science *If the aim of the torturers is to extract information, they should read O’Mara’s book and adopt gentler methods. CIA and the rest of you, read and note. Neuroscience says your methods don’t work. -- Steven Rose * Times Higher Education *Why Torture Doesn’t Work is a valuable book. O’Mara builds his case like a prosecutor, citing scientific studies and relentlessly poking holes in absurdities and inconsistencies in documents such as the ‘Torture Memos.’ Whether science matters to those who defend torture is another matter, as O’Mara knows: their motivation is often punitive, not practical. But once torture is imposed, the consequences, he says, are that it will be ‘ineffective, pointless, morally appalling, and unpredictable in its outcomes.’ -- Carl Elliott * New Scientist *Takes a scientific look at how the brain operates—or doesn’t—under stress, and points to more humane ways of getting information. -- Claire O’Connell * Irish Times *O’Mara recognizes that there are no clear, consistently successfully approaches to getting reliable information from captives. He makes a compelling case, however, that our current naïve intuitions and macho methods, including conducting interrogations in English to show who is in charge, as well as torture, are counterproductive. And that the training and experience of interrogators currently employed by the CIA is woefully inadequate. -- Glenn C. Altschuler * Psychology Today *A catalog of the scientific evidence of how torture is at best ineffective, usually counterproductive, and always inhumane. In his exhaustive examination of the psychological literature on human (and animal) stress responses, O’Mara combs through numerous studies demonstrating how those stress responses are related to memory retrieval and communication, which are the stated goals of the U.S. military’s ‘enhanced interrogation techniques.’ The author’s main argument—that we could argue forever about the ethics of torture, but the point is moot if the techniques don't even work to solicit the information sought—is confirmed over and over as he works through experiments on the effects of sleep deprivation, pain, drowning, heating, cooling, sensory deprivation, and more. The experiments range from the well‐known obedience experiments of Stanley Milgram to lesser‐known studies that measured the cognitive effects of changes in core body temperature. O’Mara leaves no stone unturned as he meticulously details the procedures and outcomes of each experiment… Everything you never wanted to know—but probably should—about interrogation techniques and outcomes. * Kirkus Reviews *An authoritative analysis. -- Antoinette Brinkman * Library Journal *O’Mara has written a sober, convincing argument that torture is practically worthless and morally disgraceful. * Publishers Weekly *With accurate and compelling neuroscience, this book will be valuable to individuals outside the neuroscience world—in politics, in the military—who should know the scientific basis of torture as they make and execute policy in this area. -- Howard Eichenbaum, Boston UniversityOne of the most powerful arguments one can make against a practice is that it is self-defeating, given its own goals. This is a highly unusual book on torture—terrifically interesting. -- Henry Shue, Merton College, University of OxfordIn a meticulously researched book that reinforces the legal and ethical arguments against torture, Shane O’Mara focuses on its effects on human physiology…As O’Mara shows, torture techniques are mentally debilitating, affecting memory as well as mood, and thereby compromise the capacity of victims to form and deliver a reliable account of any information that they may be withholding. Not only is torture morally deplorable, therefore, but its outcome is also entirely unpredictable…O’Mara capably translates the experimental evidence into accessible language for the general reader. -- Giovanni Frazzetto * Financial Times *Fascinating…Why Torture Doesn’t Work is the empirical case against torture, a reading of scientific research which concludes that torture is a poor method of extracting information, and that the people who argued for it and used it had no idea what they were doing…The message of science, according to O’Mara, is unambiguous: torture makes it harder to obtain useful information, not easier…O’Mara deserves a lot of praise for writing a convincing and moral book. -- Greg Waldmann * Open Letters Monthly *The book takes readers on an extended tour of the brain and the way it functions under the ‘chronic, severe, and extreme stressor states’ produced by forms of torture such as starvation, thirst, sleep deprivation, and waterboarding. O’Mara looks at the scientific literature examining the effects of these grim methods and determines that information obtained using them is inherently suspect…The last refuge in the defense of torture has always been an appeal to elevate pragmatism and security over ethics and the law in the face of a ‘ticking time bomb.’ O’Mara’s book reveals the hollowness of that argument. -- G. John Ikenberry * Foreign Affairs *O’Mara marshals a large amount of scientific literature to make his point. -- Rupert Stone * Newsweek *O’Mara shows that the processes of enhanced interrogation do indeed create such stressful states—interestingly, both in the interrogated person and in the interrogator—that it is enormously destructive not only to the person but to the information; and not only immediately but in the longer term… [The book’s] greatest strength, to me, is the rigor of its evident deductivism and the way this is demonstrated, which seems to act almost as a catechism against those who, with Vice President Dick Cheney, would embrace ‘the dark side’ rather blithely… [It] provide[s] key documents testifying to the assumptions of our time about what constitutes a human being. -- Rebecca Lemov * Times Literary Supplement *

" -- CHOICE"[A] well-written and thoughtful text that will be useful to clinicians, researchers, legal scholars, and those in the general public who are interested in this area of psychological distress. . . .The case studies of the appendix are excellent. " -- PsycCRITIQUES"[T]he most noteworthy aspect of the book is the inclusion of patient testimonies in the forms of artwork, poetry, and vignettes. . . .[T]he audience can scrutinize in a more involved and understandable way than simply reading technical words on a page, a feat not many research-oriented publications are able to achieve. " -- Somatic Psychotherapy Today"The TRASC [trauma-related altered states of consciousness] model is useful and interesting. The book is well-written and supported. " -- American Journal of Forensic Psychology"Breaking new ground, if not creating an entirely new research and clinical domain, this book startles with its intelligence and breadth. Frewen and Lanius call upon over a decade of functional MRI research and detailed clinical interviews to define what they refer to as ‘trauma-related altered states of consciousness’ (TRASC). The ideas are new, the data are very strong, and the grounding in the real-world experience of suffering people is refreshing. This is a whole new step forward in understanding and assisting those with dissociative difficulties. " -- John Briere, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, University of Southern California; Director, USC Adolescent Trauma Training Center, National Child Traumatic Stress Network"This is a landmark book in the history of psychotraumatology. Frewen and Lanius have created a new intellectual blueprint for understanding dissociation. Their book is unique in providing a detailed integration of the latest neuroscientific findings with the experience of what it is like to be traumatized. It is a treasure trove of ideas for anyone pursuing the study or healing of the traumatized self. " -- Chris R. Brewin, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University College London"This book reaches into the depth of PTSD—the invisible domain of troubled brains that can captivate the mental apparatus. Healing the Traumatized Self provides clear insights to help people return to the joys of human companionship. It is a must-read for all who wish to understand the neurodynamics of broken minds and pathways to healing. " -- Jaak Panksepp, Professor of Neuroscience and Baily Endowed Chair of Animal Well Being Science, Washington State University, Pullman, WA"In this scholarly, highly focused, yet accessible and readable volume, Frewen and Lanius tackle the characterization, meaning, and neurophenomenological basis for dissociation. The deep clinical insights coupled with state of the art neuroimaging data permit an in-depth analysis of dissociation in its many forms, and its relationship to traumatization, perception, and brain/mind/body connections. This work considerably advances our knowledge of dissociation and lays out a pathway for successful therapeutic interventions for highly traumatized individuals." -- Rachel Yehuda, PhD, Director of the Traumatic Stress Studies Division at Icahn School of Medicine; Mental Health Patient Care Center Director at the James J. • Autism and the Edges of the Known World:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Autism and the Edges of the Known World:

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this intelligent and incisive book, Olga Bogdashina explores old and new theories of sensory perception and communication in autism. Drawing on linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology and quantum mechanics, she looks at how the nature of the senses inform an individual's view of the world, and how language both reflects and constructs that view. Examining the 'whys' and 'hows' of the senses, and the role of language, Olga Bogdashina challenges common perceptions of what it means to be 'normal' and 'abnormal'. In doing so she shows that autism can help to illuminate our understanding of what it means to be human, and of how we develop faculties that shape our cognition, language, and behaviour. In the final chapter, she explores phenomena often associated with the paranormal - including premonitions, telepathy and déjà vu - and shows that these can largely be explained in natural terms. This book will appeal to anyone with a personal or professional interest in autism, including students and researchers, clinical practitioners, individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, teachers, speech and occupational therapists, and other professionals.Trade ReviewOlga Bogdashina beautifully presents the case for autism being, essentially, a difference in the way we process sensory information... it is refreshing to read a book where an academic freely speaks her mind, and this is a valuable book to have towards the ongoing explanation of what autism is and how to see the world through our eyes. -- Asperger UnitedRecognition of difference is, in essence, what this brave book is about. The author, who has worked extensively in the field of autism as a teacher, lecturer and researcher, and has an adult son with autism, draws on ideas from a wide range of disciplines, finding, for instance, that explanations for some of the peculiarities of sensory perception in autistic people can be found in works of anthropology and philosophy dating back a century or two... Autism isn't always about having deficits or having less; sometimes it is about having more. I was particularly interested in the section showing how autistic people can actually 'resonate' with their surroundings much more than 'normal' people can... At the end of this stimulating and highly readable book, Bogdashina comes back to the restricting stance of the official scientific community, which is "so opposed to anything conceived as supernatural that those who genuinely try to understand these (not necessarily supernatural but yet unexplained) phenomena are afraid to speak out... She makes a plea for more open-mindedness and for a greater willingness to learn from autism about different ways to experience the world around us.` -- Human GivensWhether your interest in autism is personal or professional, this magnificent book will appeal to you. The author Olga Bogdashina has worked widely on matters to do with the condition. She is a teacher, researcher and lecturer. She lectures around the world. She was recently in Inverness and is an inspiring and motivational speaker. She's the director of the first day centre for autistic children in Ukraine. She also has a grown-up son with autism ... Bogdashina unpacks all our assumptions about the 'real' world. She asserts that 'neurotypicals' (non-autistic people) are restricted – "the verbal determines and confines their thinking" ... I endorse every word of the blurb – read this book and you'll learn a lot about autism – but more importantly you'll learn about yourself. -- Anne Stormont, Write Enough blogThe book makes use of the personal experiences of autistic people, including Temple Grandin and Donna Williams. Their own words help illustrate a vibrant world that many non-autistic people are cut off from. Bogdashina also delves into the studies and reports of many established scientists, both to support her own statements and to offer alternative viewpoints. While her writing is lovely and inspiring, it is always based in scientific methodology and reflects her respect for scientific process. While other educators and researchers will find much to ponder on this book, Bogdashina's writing is also accessible to readers without advanced degrees. Even when dealing with complex subject matter, her writing is lucid and engaging. Readers looking for answers about autism will find Bogdashina's books fresh and useful; anyone interested in the questions of consciousness and experience will find it riveting. -- ForeWord ReviewsBrilliantly, Olga weaves together science and real life experiences of people with autism bringing the reader to a greater understanding of how sensory differences can bring people with autism to the edges and beyond of neurotypical perception. This book has my highest recommendation for anyone wanting to learn more about sensory awareness and perception for people with autism - as well as for themselves. -- Stephen Shore, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of Special Education at Adelphi University and internationally known author, presenter, and consultant on issues related to autism. This is an entrancing read and an excellent reflection of Dr. Bogdashina's wide range of interests. It is to her credit as an academician that she draws upon such varied subjects as philosophy and quantum mechanics to illustrate her thought process and call into question different aspects of our individuality. -- Manuel Casanova, Gottfried and Gisela Kolb Endowed Chair in Psychiatry, University of LouisvilleOlga Bogdashina's book is a magnificent and much-needed account of the nature of sensory differences in autism, full of fresh, fascinating and perceptive insights. -- Adam Feinstein, autism researcher, Autism Cymru, and editor of Looking UpThis book gives an interesting and theoretical insight into different sensory experiences of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The key points are about the difficulties individuals have with 'filtering' stimuli, and how this leads to sensory deprivation. The author links in experiences of individuals with autism to reinforce the key points and help make the information more accessible. -- Speech & Language Therapy in PracticeIn Autism and the Edges of the Known World, Bogdashina demonstrates in a compelling way how autism can provide us with rich, irreducible clues about how we are able to comprehend the world as it is and communicate that knowledge effectively in language. Her encyclopaedic acquaintance with the subject, both in terms of empirical research and theoretical reflection, is vertiginous in its detail and illuminating in its depth. Autism, with its sensory deficits and distortions, provides us with a uniquely valuable prism for rendering the mystery of all 'creaturely knowing' as a subtle dialectic between that which is primordially close and that which sublimely different. -- Dr Ian Kenway, Director of the Centre for the international Study of Cyberethics and Human Rights, Cardiff UniversityWill open a few minds to the idea of neurodiversity in the way autistic brains function and appreciation for some of the extraordinary abilities that the autistic individual has to offer society...For any professional who works with autistic individuals and researchers in the field of autism this is a must read book! It explains a perspective that, thus far, is pretty much ignored. As an occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration, as well as an adult on the autism spectrum, I feel that Dr. Bogdashina makes a lot of sense. -- Making Sense of Autism, LLCAutism and the Edges of the Known World: Sensitivites, Language and the Constructed Reality blends science and the experiences of people with autism in a fine survey considering traditional ideas of sensory perception and how they pertain to the autism experience. Linguistics, philosophy, science and health alike blend in a wider survey of how the sense and language interact differently in the autistic individual - and how autism can help foster new concepts of what it means to be human. -- The Midwest Book ReviewTable of ContentsAcknowledgments. Inner Traditions Bear and Company The Biodynamics of the Immune System: Balancing

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBiodynamic therapy practices for optimizing the immune system and healing the spiritual suffering at the root of many modern ailments Drawing on more than 45 years of practicing Eastern medicine, Michael J. Shea, Ph.D., presents a holistic guide to biodynamic manual therapy practices for optimizing the immune system and for healing the deep spiritual suffering of our contemporary world. Showing spiritual suffering to be the root of our modern epidemic of metabolic syndrome and other widespread health issues, the author explains how the pervasive degradation of the human body relates directly with the food we eat, the air we breathe, and our thoughts and emotions. He explains how the Five Element theory of Eastern medicine offers a method to reclaim the body by sensing each element in and around us as a single continuum. Focusing especially on “the fluid body” in biodynamic osteopathy and biodynamic craniosacral therapy, the author shows how inflamed components of the fluid body, such as the blood and lymphatic system, form the substrate of metabolic syndromes. He offers practices to visualize the health of the fluid body. He explains how, in order to enact the full benefits of the immune system, we need to nurture a deep sense of safety inside the body--a symbolic return to our embryonic and cosmic origins and a restoration of our sacred wholeness. Offering an extensive section of therapeutic applications, including both in-person and remote techniques, the author shares new and unique biodynamic protocols to balance the metabolism with the cosmos as well as optimize the immune system and the function of the vagus nerve. Enacting healing at the deepest spiritual level, Shea reveals how to create inner and outer balance to restore wholeness as it was at the time of the origin of the universe.Trade Review“Michael J. Shea offers a potential bible for anyone wanting to support or improve their health. He generously provides specific scientific details about the physiology underlying the pandemic of metabolic syndrome and also the guidance to heal, incorporating more than 25 years of experience in the field. Beyond that, what brings the book to heart for me is Michael’s personal stories. He candidly writes of his journey with fat and fasting, effects of military service–related PTSD, and his own prenatal and ancestral/epigenetic history. His story invites us to also investigate our own lives with more curiosity. In the process, like Michael, we might find our embryo, the biodynamic fluid body of our origins, and its cosmological connectedness with all that is. This discovery is facilitated by a beautiful collection of embryo art as an additional bonus to explore in the book. The Biodynamics of the Immune System reminds us of the essential continuity of mind, body, spirit, and nature and how the splitting of these generates suffering and dis- ease. This is no ordinary book about metabolic syndrome! It offers paths to deep healing you have probably been craving.” * Cherionna Menzam-Sills, Ph.D., author of The Breath of Life: An Introduction to Craniosacral Biodyna *“Superbly comprehensive! This book translates an understanding of metabolic syndrome to its relationship to human embryology and describes how biodynamic cardiovascular therapy assists the healing process across the spectrum of consciousness. Written like prose yet often reads like poetry.” * Dale G. Alexander, Ph.D., licensed massage therapist and workshop instructor-presenter *“Michael J. Shea’s understanding and explanation of the intricate interrelated workings of the human immune system in relation to our metabolic, hormonal, gastrointestinal, and even spiritual health represents integrative care perfectly.” * Jaimie L. Mickey, M.D., dual board certified in family medicine and integrative holistic medicine *“The Biodynamics of the Immune System is like a tall glass of cool, clear water. Page after page, this book soothes and nourishes my mind, body, and spirit. Whether you are a health care provider, a bodyworker, or ‘just’ a regular human trying to make it through these challenging times, this book offers respite and incredible information. More importantly, it offers ways to incorporate many of the ‘thousand faces of Health’ into your daily practice.” * K. Michelle Doyle, biodynamic craniosacral therapist and founder of Local Care Midwifery *“Michael Shea brings together the ancient history of separation from nature and from each other and provides a beautiful, practical guide to bring healing and health to us as individuals and as a collective. His poetic metaphors and scientific research show us that health on every level is possible and how to live from a place of wholeness and love. The specific therapeutic applications and collaborative somatic learning experiences will benefit all humans and sentient beings on the planet. While this book was originally intended for manual therapists, all of us in the helping professions can greatly benefit both personally and professionally from the philosophy, information, and practices found here. If everyone read and applied this wisdom, we as a planet and a people could move more quickly into sustained health and happiness! I found myself inspired and my heart opened as I traveled through the pages of this incredible gift to all of us. Highly recommended!” * Marti Glenn, Ph.D., clinical director and chief experience officer of Ryzio Institute *“In this paradigm-shifting book Michael Shea shares his biodynamic embryology, anatomy, and spiritual expertise so we too may clearly see. This book is about the pursuit of truth through compassion and critical thinking, giving us the insight and inspiration to see and heal the elephant in the room. Book SynopsisFilling a major gap in neuropsychological references and training materials, this is the first guide to conducting effective clinical interviews as a core component of neuropsychological practice. Prominent experts provide state-of-the-art information about clinical interviewing in the context of 16 different adult populations and settings. Chapters outline critical areas of inquiry and key considerations for differential diagnosis, as well as what initial and follow-up questions to ask, rapport-building strategies, and common interviewing pitfalls. Tips for record reviews and behavioral observations are also offered. Chapters follow a consistent format and include extensive tables for easy reference.Trade Review"A 'must read' for neuropsychologists and those in training. One of the most important skills for neuropsychology trainees to learn is how to guide and focus the clinical interview. This involves being aware of the unique information that should be gleaned for specific disorders and conditions, as well as the topics all interviews need to cover. The interview not only helps to formthe basis for the differential diagnosis, but is thekey first stage of the neuropsychological exam. This book rises to the occasion."--Dawn Bowers, PhD, ABPP-CN, Professor and Director, Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Program, University of Florida "In addition to providing an excellent overview of the foundational skills for clinical interviewing--as well as for behavioral observations and collateral interviewing--this text presents the specialized knowledge needed to interview patients in particular settings and with different neuropsychological presentations. This book will have great value to my graduate students as a complement to learning neuropsychological tests in their neuropsychological assessment course or during their first neuropsychological practicum placement. The user-friendly tables will enhance the book's utility for me as a clinical supervisor when patients with more infrequent neurological or neuropsychological presentations are seen in our training clinic."--Julie A. Suhr, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology, Ohio University "Finally, there is a high-quality book that will advance your interviewing skills. This book elevates interviewing in clinical practice. The clinical interview is a core component of diagnostics, recommendations, and decision making. The expert contributors provide broad and deep understanding of how to take group data and apply it to the individual. Chapters guide you from assessing nuanced features of clinical populations to test selection and ultimately to integration with behavioral observations and data. The tables are intuitive and a tremendous asset. This book should be required reading for neuropsychology classes. Whether you are an emerging clinician or seasoned practitioner, you need this text in your library."--Marc A.
